  1. awesome welcome to episode three of our

  2. podcast introducing lent I'm in our

  3. prayer room and I'm joined by a good

  4. friend Christen Williams who's actually

  5. coming to uh preach at toonga Elum in

  6. about uh 10 days from when we're

  7. recording this so we're actually here on

  8. Ash Wednesday and uh recording it and

  9. this the third and final episode is

  10. actually going to be on self-denial and

  11. so Kristen's the one that have come in

  12. and asked to talk about self but before

  13. we get to that J maybe just want to

  14. introduce yourself uh tell us who you

  15. are well it's uh always good to be here

  16. with you mate and I'm looking forward to

  17. visiting the church for the first time

  18. 10 days Shivers that's coming up quick

  19. isn't it we just got back uh we just got

  20. back from a holiday so like I said you

  21. in the car park I'm I'm going flat out

  22. catching up on uh getting ready for the

  23. year uh so uh my wife and I we've lived

  24. here in toonga for uh coming up 13 years

  25. um we have three kids two grandkids and

  26. uh these days I I previously was

  27. pastoring a church locally but these

  28. days I'm just uh have more of a nomadic

  29. existence so tend to be in a different

  30. town or a different location every week

  31. and um it's quite a privilege I get to

  32. hang out with people like you and get to

  33. see a bit of a picture of what's going

  34. on in various towns and locations and

  35. churches all over the country awesome so

  36. good and uh I know you've been such an

  37. encouragement to me and my walk with the

  38. Lord and I've just so appreciated the

  39. wisdom and know that that's going to be

  40. such a blessing to our people as we come

  41. to discuss self-denial and I guess to

  42. give it context by the time people will

  43. be uh listening to this uh some will be

  44. about three or 4 days into perhaps

  45. having chosen to lay something down for

  46. the Lord for some that might be sugar it

  47. might be coffee it might be screens it

  48. might be social media it will be

  49. something um that probably is going to

  50. be a a self-denial and you know we've

  51. talked an earlier podcast

  52. about uh how we're so fortunate in a

  53. western world that even the things that

  54. we give up are even a sign of what

  55. luxury we have but I guess people will

  56. be listening to this and some people

  57. will be having a great experience and

  58. right now some people will be feeling

  59. all kinds of withdrawals or or

  60. struggling and so I don't know maybe as

  61. a starting point what what kind of well

  62. when whenever you're whenever you give

  63. something up or you know whether you're

  64. fasting or um giving up something in

  65. particular about three or four is when

  66. the theory starts to become a bit more

  67. real to you that's when it starts to

  68. bite a bit doesn't it so um uh you know

  69. for anyone that is feeling the bite

  70. great grace on you you know and I think

  71. it's I think it's so important that we

  72. understand why why self-denial is uh an

  73. aspect of this face why does lent even

  74. exist why why are the many scriptures I

  75. was I was just looking at various

  76. scriptures and I I made myself a couple

  77. of notes earlier but but I was looking

  78. at many scriptures today about about

  79. denying ourselves and about you know

  80. fasting and and and ceasing this sort of

  81. activity so that we can give ourselves

  82. to pursuing God and and um you know it's

  83. a cost benefit isn't it you know there

  84. there is a cost and there is also a

  85. benefit but when you're in the middle of

  86. the cost sometimes it's harder to see

  87. the

  88. benefit so um while we were away on

  89. holiday I I don't watch a lot of network

  90. television but we're at the we were at

  91. the family has a beach house down in the

  92. able Tasman so we were down there and

  93. you know you you know you spend a day

  94. you know my wife and I'd go off for

  95. hikes or you know you spend a day out on

  96. the water or whatever you're doing and

  97. you come home and suddenly you know

  98. sometimes just because you're a bit

  99. you're a bit worn out you sit down and

  100. you flick on the TV and for the first

  101. time in ages I saw a lot of ads I

  102. haven't seen I haven't seen ads on

  103. broadcast television for ages and I

  104. found it quite confronting actually

  105. the the the Indulgence of them

  106. everything was about indulge whether it

  107. was selling ice creams or cat food or

  108. retirement villages it was all it was

  109. all about indulgent you know be in

  110. indulge in this and indulge in that and

  111. and I think the message around us is uh

  112. in the society that we're in is

  113. Indulgence have the best of this get

  114. what you deserve and so then this

  115. message of self-denial is a little

  116. little bit it's a little bit like a

  117. voice in the wilderness isn't it you

  118. know in the midst of all that saying

  119. actually no there is a there is a there

  120. is a different pathway that requires

  121. something different from us than just

  122. endless Indulgence absolutely it's a CO

  123. a counterculture narrativism exactly

  124. exactly and such an

  125. invitation because there is actually a

  126. shallowness to the Indulgence right that

  127. eat drink and be merry for tomorrow we

  128. die you know and uh there there is a a

  129. shallowness to that um and sometimes uh

  130. when when we begin to peel that back in

  131. all of our Lives as we say that day

  132. three it can be hard but actually what's

  133. on the other side is an invitation into

  134. something so rich well you use the key

  135. word there invitation and um uh you know

  136. like when when the message from the

  137. church is just denial denial denial

  138. which we you know we might talk about a

  139. bit later on but when it's just that um

  140. uh there's no there's no there's no hope

  141. in it there's no joy but you use the key

  142. word invitation so when when the Lord

  143. invites us to deny ourselves when the

  144. word of God speaks about denying

  145. ourselves like you say it's always an

  146. invitation and um and like we were

  147. talking about earlier you know like I've

  148. had various times where um particularly

  149. in the realm of prayer and waiting on

  150. God where I've I've had the Lord give me

  151. an invitation and the invitation always

  152. came with a cost you know like whether

  153. it was staying up late at night or

  154. getting up really early in the morning

  155. or even even even just quitting various

  156. things that I never in a in a in a

  157. hundred years would have thought were

  158. that I I would need to quit but just

  159. having having that that voice of the

  160. Holy Spirit saying I want you to get rid

  161. of that in your life um uh and so all of

  162. those they always an invitation to

  163. something so like when when I had the

  164. Lord say to me this is what N9 years ago

  165. now when I had the Lord say to me in a

  166. dream uh uh I want to spend time with

  167. you and my life was busy like most

  168. people's lives are busy and the only

  169. time I could find for that chunk of time

  170. that he was asking was to get up really

  171. early in the morning and so the first

  172. morning getting up at

  173. 4:00 um uh you know it was it was a bit

  174. of a shocker I I sat

  175. there really the caffeine was the only

  176. thing that was enabling me to stay awake

  177. um and then later on he asked me to do

  178. it without caffeine which was you know

  179. another step along the way but um the

  180. benefit so so at the point of the

  181. invitation often you see the cost like

  182. oh my gosh how am I going to do that but

  183. then the benefit far outweighed it and

  184. and I found it to be quite life

  185. transforming wow and I I know I've heard

  186. you share a number of times about a time

  187. in your life I think it was in Nelson

  188. where you were watching a murder mystery

  189. do you want to share that story with us

  190. well uh I was being indulgent I was

  191. sitting in my big rocking chair and I

  192. had my evening cup of Milo and my my

  193. very tasty biscuit and I was sitting

  194. there and on you know on my at that

  195. stage we just got our first ever uh flat

  196. panel TV you know and so I I was pretty

  197. keen on watching it and I was sitting

  198. there in my big chair watching this uh

  199. uh one of these murder shows you know it

  200. begins with a graphic murder and then

  201. the rest of the show is trying to work

  202. out uh who done it and I'm sitting there

  203. and this thought goes through my mind

  204. this is a stupid way to entertain myself

  205. and so I left the Milo there I took the

  206. biscuit with me cuz it was more portable

  207. put on a big jacket and went to the

  208. garage and stood in the garage in the

  209. dark and then I was like now what am I

  210. going to do I just I knew that I didn't

  211. want to just sit there indulging myself

  212. and that murder thing I wanted to be

  213. with God so I went to the garage where

  214. there were no distractions and what

  215. unfolded really over the next five six

  216. seven years was a journey of really uh

  217. getting to know God learning how to

  218. communicate with him when when there

  219. wasn't a skillful worship leader uh

  220. leading me in a song or um uh a skilled

  221. prayer leader leading a prayer meeting I

  222. I learned how to stand alone and the

  223. cost initially was just this feeling of

  224. absolute barrenness I was like man I've

  225. been a Christian for 30 years and I

  226. don't even know how to talk to God but

  227. over the period of time I started to see

  228. the benefit of what the invitation was

  229. and and I I just had some some wild

  230. Encounters in that garage at our house

  231. in Nelson and interestingly enough when

  232. we sold the house when the real estate

  233. agent went through the house he wasn't a

  234. Believer but he went through the house

  235. and he walked into the garage and he was

  236. like wow this garage feels really

  237. excellent and I just think there was a

  238. residue in there from all the prayer

  239. that had happened wow yeah and I can

  240. certainly identify with those times of

  241. saying man I I don't even know how to

  242. pray yeah you know I think where Jesus

  243. said you know when you pray don't bring

  244. your request for your father already

  245. knows what you need and there was a time

  246. where I realized yeah that would cut my

  247. prayer life that that was my prayer life

  248. if I was to take that command seriously

  249. totally my my prayer life would cease

  250. and so I do find it interesting though

  251. that that invitation did come with

  252. laying something down and I think

  253. sometimes we try and add in what the

  254. Lord's asking us to do without perhaps

  255. laying something down which actually

  256. enables the that that to happen I I

  257. found that every time he's asked me to

  258. do something he's always given me the

  259. grace to do it although sometimes the

  260. grace seems to arrive shortly after you

  261. take the first step so um

  262. uh so like you know you were just

  263. talking about bringing your requests to

  264. God so I I got into the garage and the

  265. first thing that I realized in that

  266. garriage was that my prayer life

  267. consisted either of pacing back and

  268. forth speaking in tongues which is good

  269. or bringing requests to God equally

  270. which is good and I I I didn't want that

  271. to be all of it so for the first three

  272. months I fasted praying in tongues and

  273. asking for things and I had to learn how

  274. to talk to God in a totally different

  275. way and I I discovered things like the

  276. value of Silence I discovered things

  277. like the value of repeating something

  278. like actually meditating on it and

  279. chewing it over and saying it over and

  280. over again uh started to develop

  281. language of how to talk to God and uh

  282. again that was quite a life-changing

  283. experience wow I've never heard that as

  284. a concept fasting a particular type of

  285. prayer some of us are going man at the

  286. moment and I'm fasting watching YouTube

  287. videos and Kristen Williams is over here

  288. fasting types of prayer well while it

  289. was happening I was like oh Lord am I in

  290. deception here but it it you know the

  291. the fruit was good the fruit was good

  292. but it was it was a journey yeah

  293. absolutely and so I guess as we um begin

  294. to even as we're discussing these things

  295. uh I think one of the things that

  296. doesn't help us with self denial is

  297. straight away we begin a comparison

  298. thing yeah like I start thinking about

  299. what you did and I look at my my life

  300. and I think well have I done that or you

  301. know um do I need to do this and so we

  302. begin to uh look in a in a comparison

  303. way and uh what do you think about the

  304. danger of that well I think it's very

  305. dangerous is it is it Galatians or

  306. Ephesians says when we compare ourselves

  307. with ourselves we lack wisdom and um uh

  308. and what we what we can tend to do when

  309. we're doing that is we make a Doctrine

  310. out of someone else's testimony or a

  311. formula out of a testimony so like if

  312. you share a testimony with me your

  313. testimony doesn't it doesn't mean to me

  314. that if I do exactly what you did God

  315. will do exactly what he did in your life

  316. and mine your testimony is an invitation

  317. to me so if you if if if we are at a

  318. conference together and you have a wild

  319. encounter with God and I'm left there

  320. unmoved I I can either sit there and

  321. look at you and go huh well that's not

  322. feir you know I remember once I was

  323. talking in a particular place and um uh

  324. it was a it was a school that students

  325. paid for and some of the students were

  326. having wild encounters and I had this

  327. young man come up to me and said hey

  328. well you know where's where's my

  329. encounter with God I paid the same fee

  330. and I was like oh buddy you you know

  331. you're getting in some dodgy territory

  332. there so if I'm at the conference and

  333. you're having a wild encounter your

  334. encounter is my reminder that God

  335. encounters people and he might not be

  336. doing it to me right there but it's my

  337. encouragement oh yes God encounters

  338. people and he'll maybe he'll get me

  339. later but if I if I start comparing then

  340. I'm going to wind up in ugly places with

  341. envy and jealousy and frustration which

  342. I don't know how you go with that but

  343. they're never good for me yeah and even

  344. you enter into self-denial that maybe

  345. you're not supposed to enter into so you

  346. begin to think well if this is what a

  347. spiritual person does I guess I should

  348. uh sacrifice XY Z and can actually end

  349. up in a place where uh you know you're

  350. denying yourself but it's not into an

  351. invitation it's it's into an expectation

  352. that maybe I'll become like someone else

  353. or so if someone if someone hears a

  354. testimony about you know like I've just

  355. alluded to them there's quite a lot more

  356. to those stories but if if I uh if I'm

  357. um if someone hears me alluding to you

  358. know these particular seasons of Prayer

  359. in my life and they say what should I do

  360. uh my advice would be say start by

  361. saying Lord Jesus would would you in

  362. your kindness give me an invitation

  363. because both of those particular times

  364. began with what I knew to be an

  365. invitation from the Lord um and so that

  366. would be my advice you know often often

  367. share testimonies particularly with

  368. younger people and they're like oh wow

  369. you know I really want what you have and

  370. you say well ask the Lord ask the Holy

  371. Spirit to bring an invitation to you

  372. because the invitation will always come

  373. with the grace to do what he's asked you

  374. to do yeah that's so good and I know

  375. some people some of us have grown up in

  376. legalistic cultures where uh it wasn't

  377. uh self-denial that you chose it was

  378. something that was expected of you and

  379. so uh how do you think we balance the

  380. idea of you know uh the scriptural truth

  381. that God gives us things to enjoy and we

  382. are actually to enjoy life uh versus

  383. this thing of self-denial and laying our

  384. lives down like uh where do you find the

  385. tension lies with that oh it's probably

  386. hundred different ones isn't there but

  387. um really it comes down to the heart

  388. motive like strange strange example but

  389. if if you if you go out into the Book of

  390. Revelation and you know people um in

  391. recent years suddenly people that

  392. haven't been interested in the Book of

  393. Revelation or things to do with the end

  394. times suddenly they are and there's a

  395. big tangent there we're not going down

  396. that but but when you look at the at the

  397. issue of say for example this this wild

  398. topic of the mark of the beast the issue

  399. there is not the actual Mark it's

  400. worship so what the evil one is after is

  401. worship so he doesn't just want you

  402. to own a house he wants you to worship

  403. your house to give everything of worth

  404. that you have to that house he doesn't

  405. he you know it's it's it's it's okay to

  406. have a really good career I think it's

  407. even okay to have lots of money the

  408. issue is not what you own it's what owns

  409. you and that's um and really that's what

  410. this comes back to you know like uh

  411. legalism when we get legalistic

  412. something's gone wrong in our heart

  413. attitude to whatever we've become

  414. legalistic about and um and if we keep

  415. our worship in the right place then I I

  416. think that we're a whole lot less likely

  417. to get caught in legalism you know

  418. whether it's whether it's you know like

  419. here we are at the beginning of Lent and

  420. lent unfolding unfolding ahead of us but

  421. um there are a lot of people all around

  422. the world that will do lent out of

  423. legalism they are trying to earn what

  424. was already given what was already

  425. freely given it's by Grace we've been

  426. saved through faith look I'm starting to

  427. wave my arms around here and act like a

  428. preacher but it it is by Grace we've

  429. been saved through faith we bring we

  430. bring nothing to this other than our

  431. humble grateful yes Lord have all of me

  432. but once we start trying to earn it you

  433. know or if if I if I see you having

  434. encounters and I go right I need to I

  435. need to do this and this and this to

  436. earn that it doesn't work that way

  437. that's that's legalism and legalism you

  438. know is is always is the the letter

  439. kills but the spirit gives life so it's

  440. it's it's it's it's in it's in that

  441. regard that we really need the Holy

  442. Spirit to help us

  443. discern yeah and I think it's

  444. interesting because something can become

  445. legal legalism for a person

  446. and they end up being very wey of that

  447. thing but you can then assume that

  448. anyone else practicing that is in

  449. legalism whereas one person's legalism

  450. is actually another person's worship and

  451. uh you know there are things that that I

  452. know I could get legalistic about that

  453. actually would not be helpful for me and

  454. yet other people practice the very same

  455. thing as an act of worship to God and

  456. it's deeply worshipful for them and so

  457. it's it's keeping an eye not so much on

  458. what the outward action is but what's

  459. the heart behind it and I often think

  460. it's uh as well you know if it is

  461. something you're fasting from or

  462. something you're giving up sometimes the

  463. challenge comes where can I actually

  464. take this back up again like what I be

  465. okay to partake in this yeah and if it's

  466. like well no I never could it's kind of

  467. like wow that's an interesting attitude

  468. like uh you know I know when I gave up

  469. coffee for lint one year I did the lent

  470. and then I did year and uh at the end of

  471. the year I was really pleased that I'd

  472. done 12 months and then I felt to take

  473. it up again and there was a little bit

  474. of self-righteous Pride that was kind of

  475. like well I've given coffee up for 12

  476. months like look at me look at me and uh

  477. I can tell you though the first cup back

  478. tasted amazing like it wasn't like oh

  479. that tasted gone like it was amazing I

  480. mean I would go during that 12 months

  481. and buy SAR a takeway coffee and she

  482. thought I was so nice cuz I was buying

  483. her a takeaway coffee and that's true I

  484. was doing something nice for my wife but

  485. I'd also sniff it on home and I just

  486. sniff the the beans and go oh that

  487. smells so good and so for me equally the

  488. challenge was hey take it back up it's

  489. okay enjoy it I've given you something

  490. to enjoy and so I think it's uh

  491. certainly in the early stages of fasting

  492. it's not such a challenge but sometimes

  493. it is a challenge if you worried that

  494. someone's something's getting legalistic

  495. it's kind of like what would happen if I

  496. actually partook in that again you know

  497. we're not talking about sinful things of

  498. course um but you know something that's

  499. permissible yeah what would happen if I

  500. and if you find yourself saying oh I

  501. never could not wow I I actually want to

  502. keep fasting this because it's an act of

  503. worship yeah you know I I think that's a

  504. really good uh Paradigm and a good

  505. question to ask you know well and I

  506. think too I think there's um I think the

  507. Lord's really been speaking to me and

  508. and to me and my wife in probably the

  509. last 15 years about Simplicity you know

  510. like we live in a world that is very

  511. complex and even even likes to

  512. prioritize complexity um and and for me

  513. Simplicity like I look at that verse you

  514. know uh let us throw off everything that

  515. hinders and the sin that so easily

  516. entangles so there are things that we

  517. need to throw off that are not sin but

  518. they're hindering us you know and so um

  519. uh we started looking at that we started

  520. looking at things we had in our lives

  521. that were just slowing us down things

  522. that were hindering us things that were

  523. requiring time of us we we wanted to

  524. prioritize being as flexible as we

  525. possibly could and and you can do that

  526. at every stage of life whether you know

  527. whether your family's growing up and LIF

  528. home or whether you've got a house a

  529. busy house full of children you know

  530. just just not having encumbrances and

  531. hindrances uh that come from a world

  532. that says indulge in this and own that

  533. and have this and before you know it

  534. you're up to your eyeballs just

  535. maintaining the lifestyle rather than

  536. actually living it so good and I you I

  537. think of that scripture in Corinthians

  538. where it says you know everything is

  539. permissible but not everything is

  540. beneficial and so I think sometimes with

  541. lent we're actually realizing hey

  542. there's something that was permissible

  543. it's not sin but maybe the my

  544. relationship to it now is no longer

  545. beneficial and so maybe it's become an

  546. idol or getting a sense of life from

  547. this in an unhealthy way not wrong to

  548. enjoy stuff but there's an unhealthy

  549. level of involvement in this thing and

  550. so it gives us a chance to say hey maybe

  551. this is permissible but it may not be

  552. beneficial and so I'll just pull back

  553. for this season and and allow my I guess

  554. it to reorientate itself in my life and

  555. sometimes that means we go back to that

  556. thing in a healthier place and sometimes

  557. it actually means something that when we

  558. realized we were without it um our lives

  559. were better and I know one of the things

  560. that they really talk about a lot of

  561. people who particularly social media but

  562. particularly Twitter um I've never been

  563. on Twitter but uh people who have

  564. Twitter the statistics show your life is

  565. demonstrably better when you get rid of

  566. it almost instantly because of the way

  567. the opinions work and the algorithms and

  568. it's really designed to provoke you and

  569. so sometimes there can be other things

  570. like that in life that way she go I

  571. thought I needed this and I got rid of

  572. it and life actually got a lot better

  573. and so you know in those cases it's

  574. sometimes a clear sign we actually don't

  575. need to go back to that thing ages ago

  576. this you know this is a long time ago um

  577. I used to have one of those um one of

  578. those little handheld Tetris games you

  579. know and I I would I spend a lot of time

  580. on planes and sometimes you know if

  581. you're on a plane if it's you know if

  582. you're flying domestically somewhere and

  583. it hasn't got a movie or if you're

  584. flying internationally in all the movies

  585. are things that you're just not

  586. interested in I'd get this little Tetris

  587. thing out and I would just sit there on

  588. the plane just you know clicking away on

  589. my Tetris and didn't think anything of

  590. it you know there's nowhere in the Bible

  591. where it says Thou shalt not play Tetris

  592. but often as part of my Ministry I will

  593. have you know a word of knowledge or a

  594. word of Prophecy for someone and so like

  595. I I would find myself like often I'll be

  596. I'll be just there during the worship

  597. and I'll be in a church maybe that I'm

  598. visiting and you start hearing the Lord

  599. speaking into the life of the church

  600. church and I started realizing that

  601. every word of knowledge or every

  602. prophetic picture I had involved all

  603. these things falling down and falling

  604. into place just like the Tetris game so

  605. like I would I would see I would see

  606. someone and I'd be like I just feel I

  607. want to pray for you and prophesy of you

  608. and my word would be I just I just see

  609. complicated things coming together and I

  610. I see the Lord arranging and I started

  611. realizing that oh my gosh this Tetris is

  612. starting to get in the way of my ability

  613. to prophesy so off it went and um

  614. uh or I used to I used to drink a lot of

  615. Diet Coke and um sometimes when you

  616. travel you go to places where they don't

  617. have it and so I would be like I I

  618. remember being in um uh in Ukraine with

  619. Seth and Diet Coke was not available and

  620. I spent the whole time over there with a

  621. headache so I'm like that's not helping

  622. me that's got to go so you know it's

  623. just just things like that even things

  624. that you know they're just it's not

  625. sinful but it's hindering you and and

  626. and not having that as an encumbrance

  627. not having you know like I don't I don't

  628. want to I don't want to be saying you

  629. know coming and visiting your church

  630. what are your requirements well you

  631. better have a Diet Coke and you better

  632. have a coffee and I I need this and I

  633. need a Tetris game you know like you

  634. just let's not let's not have all that

  635. stuff just keep it simple yeah so good

  636. so just as we maybe bring this

  637. discussion to a close uh I don't know if

  638. you've got anything else to add uh I

  639. guess the thing I really want to focus

  640. on and finishing and and you can add any

  641. extra thoughts but is that invitation of

  642. the Lord like we have people that are

  643. fasting for this particular season and

  644. uh you know I just uh am just stirred

  645. that it hey it's not really about what

  646. you're fasting it's about a Heart of

  647. Worship to Jesus do you maybe just want

  648. to encourage Us in that as we close I

  649. think when you when you fast when you

  650. deny

  651. yourself you're positioning yourself for

  652. an invitation and um you know like so

  653. there are people that are going hear

  654. this they they they're fasting food so

  655. they're hungry when you when you're

  656. fasting food you're denying one appetite

  657. to maximize the chance of increasing

  658. another appetite that uh I I don't know

  659. if it works like this but I I see it a

  660. little bit like whacko you know the game

  661. whacka all where the things when you

  662. when you whack it down over here it pops

  663. up over there and so if I if I whack

  664. down my appetite for

  665. food I find that the appetite will pop

  666. up somewhere else and some of the times

  667. when I have been the hungriest for

  668. God and the times when I've heard his

  669. voice the most clearly has been when I

  670. have been limiting other appetites I'll

  671. give you one example um a number of

  672. years ago we went away as a family we

  673. went away on holiday to a place uh in

  674. Northland and we got there and we um we

  675. we chose to have no entertainment

  676. whatsoever nothing for us nothing for

  677. the kids kids and so we were in this

  678. beach house and it was completely silent

  679. and I had withdrawal symptoms I like one

  680. time my wife caught me out in the car

  681. listening to the news because I was

  682. addicted to the

  683. news but what happened there is I

  684. started finding that God was speaking so

  685. clearly like I'd lie down to go to bed

  686. and I'd be lying there and I'd hear God

  687. speak so I get up go write it down yep

  688. got it go back to bed be lying there

  689. hear him speak and finally it was like

  690. this went on for several days that we

  691. were there and I was like wow this place

  692. is this is bethl this is the this is the

  693. house of God and he said no you're just

  694. quiet because you've quietened down that

  695. area you've sharpened up your ability to

  696. hear over here because you've denied

  697. that appetite this appetite will

  698. increase and my experience has been that

  699. whenever I have laid things down like

  700. for example getting up early in the

  701. morning and and I felt to spend really

  702. about seven years of that in the morning

  703. was almost entirely silent just sitting

  704. in the window looking out waiting on God

  705. pacing around on the street in the dark

  706. no music no nothing just waiting and

  707. listening not saying there's a formula

  708. there but as God came to fill the void

  709. created by what I had kicked out of that

  710. space he was 100 billion times better

  711. than what I laid down that we never lose

  712. on that transaction so for you know for

  713. what for whatever form of self-denial

  714. people are doing for Lent we've got to

  715. remember after after lent what's coming

  716. Resurrection so what what what comes

  717. following on from the season of

  718. self-denial and then obviously you know

  719. you've got Jesus going to the cross and

  720. all that his his self-denial ultimately

  721. there's Resurrection for him but also

  722. ultimately for us and so he's he's

  723. always is better and you know I'm of the

  724. opinion you know Titus 213 says the

  725. Blessed highest happiest hope of the

  726. church is that Jesus will return and on

  727. the day that he returns no one will look

  728. up and say you were not worth it on that

  729. day when we see him face to face he will

  730. be a billion times better than we

  731. imagined in our most wild moments of

  732. ecstasy on the earth and if he's better

  733. then then he's also better now you know

  734. I used to have a uh a couple of friends

  735. and we would just remind each other we

  736. would remind each other from time to

  737. time we would just look at each other

  738. and go there is an answer for your

  739. longing and the answer for your longing

  740. is not something you can buy in a store

  741. it's not some amount of money you can

  742. accumulate the answer for your longing

  743. is a man whose face shines seven times

  744. brighter than the sun with eyes of fire

  745. and and this this is Our Redeemer this

  746. is our savior this is our captain our

  747. King and this this this is the one this

  748. is this is the prize for everything that

  749. we would ever lay down wow that's so

  750. great hey just as you were sharing about

  751. those appetites I wondered if maybe you

  752. would close them prayer for us but uh I

  753. just had it on my heart maybe even if

  754. you could pray into uh um sorry it's but

  755. strange I telling you what to pray for

  756. but I just thought you know those

  757. appetites sometimes when we quench one

  758. actually something else tries to rise up

  759. as a not the appetite for the kingdom

  760. but we replace something with something

  761. else and sometimes that can happen for

  762. us and I wonder if you would just pray

  763. for us with those appetites that maybe

  764. in particularly in this season is as

  765. people are denying themselves that they

  766. wouldn't say yes to another inferior

  767. appetite but there would be a Grace to

  768. say yes to the appetite for more of

  769. heaven and and what God's

  770. doing I I'll pray that and just uh

  771. before I do that John Piper in one of

  772. the books that I read he said he said

  773. sin is where you run to when your

  774. heart's not fully satisfied in god so

  775. let's pray father I thank you for uh

  776. thank you for my friend Aaron thank you

  777. for his family thank you Lord for this

  778. uh this church thank you Lord for the

  779. life and the heart for you that every

  780. person that hears this simple recording

  781. has Lord I

  782. pray that their hearts would be fully

  783. satisfied in you I pray Lord as they set

  784. aside time as they set aside appetites

  785. as they set aside uh eating or or

  786. whatever it is that they've laid down

  787. lord I pray in that place that you would

  788. meet them with your

  789. grace and with your invitation I pray

  790. holy spirit that you would that you

  791. would wrap each person up that you would

  792. cover and watch over this time that the

  793. enemy would not be able to deceive or

  794. divert in any way shape or form in

  795. jesus' name and I ask holy spirit that

  796. what people

  797. receive from

  798. you would be so far beyond anything that

  799. they laid

  800. down that they would even come to the

  801. end of this time of

  802. denial and going actually there are some

  803. things I just don't need to go back to

  804. father I pray that the heart of every

  805. person

  806. that hears this simple

  807. recording would be fully satisfied in

  808. you that Lord we would be people that

  809. would truly say Lord you are

  810. enough Lord I pray that you would that

  811. you would bless them I pray that you

  812. would protect them I pray that you would

  813. turn away the works of the evil one in

  814. Jesus name and that you would release

  815. fresh anointing fresh baptism of the

  816. Holy Spirit fresh uh ability to hear and

  817. discern your voice oh God Lord let times

  818. of refreshing come from the presence of

  819. the Lord uh into this people into each

  820. individual and into their families in

  821. Jesus

  822. name amen amen thanks for your time

  823. Kristen and uh church family may you be

  824. blessed in this season of

  825. land

  826. e

  827. e for
