  1. well I just feel uh in a moment uh Peter

  2. and Karen are going to come and share

  3. something with us briefly But before we

  4. do that I just really want to uh pray

  5. for Stefan And uh he's about to uh go up

  6. and have uh actually an operation on his

  7. brain And um I asked him this morning he

  8. said "Well what it is is I've got

  9. residency and so they've said they're

  10. going to have to remove half my brain so

  11. I fit in." And so

  12. um he's French you know like um but man

  13. can uh also for the D do you guys just

  14. want to stand and could we just extend

  15. our hands church and let's really uh

  16. let's just believe for a miracle Father

  17. in the name of Jesus Lord we pray Father

  18. for divine health over Stefan Lord we

  19. break every assignment of the enemy And

  20. Lord we declare divine healing in Jesus'

  21. name Lord we pray the peace of God even

  22. as they travel to Oakland and Lord for

  23. the surgery and for everything that's

  24. going to happen But Lord we pray for an

  25. amazing report Lord we speak to uh his

  26. kidneys Lord we speak full health Lord

  27. we break every assignment and in the

  28. name of Jesus we bless this family Lord

  29. to prosper in Jesus' name Amen Amen

  30. Awesome And so let's keep him in our

  31. prayers and just believe that God's

  32. going to do something But uh Peter and

  33. Karen do you guys want to come Uh it

  34. would just be awesome to have these guys

  35. come and share These guys go uh

  36. regularly into the prisons to minister

  37. and so they're just going to come and

  38. give us a little update So uh welcome

  39. guys

  40. [Applause]

  41. Can you hear

  42. Um before we start into it um the Lord's

  43. given me uh two scriptures and then uh

  44. Karen will take over from there But they

  45. but these scriptures come quite quite

  46. clearly to me and um it's it's for us to

  47. understand his word and to move with it

  48. Yeah In Jesus name E okay The first one

  49. is in

  50. Romans Romans

  51. 10 chapter

  52. 14 How then shall they call on him in

  53. whom they have not

  54. believed And how shall they believe in

  55. him whom they have not heard And how

  56. shall they hear without a preacher And

  57. how shall they preach unless they are

  58. sent as it is written how beautiful are

  59. the feet of those who preach the gospel

  60. of peace who bring glad tidings of good

  61. things So that's the first scripture And

  62. the second scripture is

  63. in

  64. Ephesians Ephesians 6:12

    Ephesians 6:12

  65. For we do not wrestle against the flesh

  66. and blood but against the

  67. principalities against powers against

  68. the rulers of the darkness of this age

  69. against spiritual host of wickedness in

  70. the heavenly

  71. places So I'm going to leave it there

  72. and Karen will carry on I think Is that

  73. right Yes it will be

  74. I was get you in the play Takes two to

  75. tango you know Hey

  76. Okay So um as you know Pete and I go to

  77. the prison but we go with other people

  78. So there's Koe that joins us Julianne

  79. and Eley Um and at the moment that's our

  80. team that go in there Now we go there

  81. from here We go as the representative of

  82. the Lord The reason we've come here

  83. today is we need the church because it

  84. is a spiritual battle where we're going

  85. We're not going to a church building

  86. We're going to the enemy's ground every

  87. time we go there We need to be covered

  88. by the blood But at the moment the

  89. battle is with the

  90. system Every few years the contract

  91. comes up for the prison ministry for the

  92. prisons And at this year it's coming up

  93. They're already in negotiations and

  94. talks which take a few months We need

  95. the church to be praying not just for us

  96. but for prison ministry to stay at the

  97. head of the Christians We need the

  98. Christians to be at the head because the

  99. Lord calls us to be the head not the

  100. tail Right We need to stay at the head

  101. and the battle we're having is that

  102. Islamic want that position

  103. So we are fighting them as well They're

  104. already doing zooms into the prison at

  105. the moment and the talk is come and join

  106. this because we can still

  107. kill We need the church backing We need

  108. your prayers your continuous prayers to

  109. go into this place We need our

  110. leadership to stay where it is

  111. These guys need the salvation and we're

  112. seeing the flood of God We're seeing the

  113. miracles in there We're seeing his

  114. presence flow through that place But we

  115. need it to continue A lot of people

  116. think you know it's just a place where

  117. criminals go It's where they belong But

  118. you know they got stories just like me

  119. and you They've got stories and some of

  120. them are heartbreaking stories And if we

  121. were given a second chance they need

  122. that They need a second chance God gave

  123. me a second third fourth fifth sixth

  124. chance So at least we can go in there

  125. and give them that So please we need

  126. your prayers to keep that head We need

  127. the authority to stay where it is The

  128. Lord the word the Lord gave us this year

  129. for the prison was stand in the

  130. authority we've been given

  131. We stand in that authority every month

  132. We don't fear going in there because we

  133. know God's got our back We know that

  134. going in there but we need the prayers

  135. of our Christian brothers and sisters to

  136. back the ministry of what God's put in

  137. place And we always remember that

  138. scripture that says those that didn't

  139. visit those in prison didn't visit

  140. me So please if we can just ask for your

  141. continual prayer that Christianity stays

  142. at the head Yeah Awesome Let's pray

  143. today guys Father we thank you for this

  144. awesome team And Lord thank you that

  145. they are one of many teams throughout

  146. the motu that are going in to see

  147. prisoners set free And Lord we pray in

  148. the name of Jesus that this would remain

  149. an open door for the gospel Lord we

  150. rebuke the plans of the enemy And Lord

  151. we declare Lord not only will the door

  152. remain open but Lord the fruitfulness

  153. will increase in the name of Jesus Lord

  154. that which the enemy meant for harm Lord

  155. you would turn for good and there would

  156. be the continued uh salvations and

  157. harvest and miracles happening in the

  158. prisons We anoint the team We bless them

  159. We send them with grace and fire Lord we

  160. thank you for their faithfulness in the

  161. mighty name of Jesus Amen Amen Wonderful

  162. Thanks guys

  163. you know as a church um we talked about

  164. we're leaning into prayer presence

  165. mission and we we talked about how

  166. prayer doesn't come easily to some

  167. people And if if that's you I just

  168. suggest you sign up to get Scott Rowley

  169. to deliver you to the ladies uh high tea

  170. because if you get in his car I think

  171. it's about five liters your prayer life

  172. will go to another level So you know

  173. there's a hot tip right there If you're

  174. struggling to pray you'll certainly be

  175. closer to Jesus by the time uh you get

  176. to uh the high tea That's for sure We

  177. call it the Beer's School of

  178. Intercession But uh hey we're um doing a

  179. series at the moment that just started

  180. two weeks ago and didn't just share so

  181. well two weeks ago on the secret life

  182. And uh as a church we're doing Lent And

  183. Lent is the 40 days in the lead into

  184. Easter And actually historically there

  185. are three things that get practiced

  186. during Lent And they are

  187. almsgiving praying and fasting So these

  188. are generally the three things that

  189. actually hundreds of thousands if not

  190. millions of believers all at the same

  191. time will be leaning into these

  192. practices And they're actually found in

  193. Matthew 6 So they're found in Matthew 6

  194. and they're attached to Jesus' command

  195. that these are actually practices that

  196. we do in secret And uh I realize we've

  197. got a lot of visitors here this morning

  198. And uh this morning we're actually

  199. speaking on the practice of giving And

  200. uh I know uh that can cause all kinds of

  201. things People love it when pastors talk

  202. about money uh but this morning we are

  203. talking about the practice of giving and

  204. the New Testament gives us two

  205. priorities for giving uh I I believe and

  206. that's number one is giving to the

  207. church and number two is giving to the

  208. needy Now this uh in Lent and and this

  209. passage in Matthew it's actually talking

  210. about giving to the needy though that

  211. all of us as believers should actually

  212. have a ministry where we give to people

  213. who are in need And certainly as a

  214. church we practice this We sew into

  215. different ministries and into different

  216. people and uh a and and that help the

  217. needy And so this morning we're going to

  218. unpack this a little bit And in Matthew

  219. 6 it says this "When you give to the

  220. needy sound no trumpet before you as the

  221. hypocrites do in the synagogues and in

  222. the streets that they may be praised by

  223. others Truly I say to you they have

  224. received their reward But when you give

  225. to the needy do not left let your left

  226. hand know what your right hand is doing

  227. so that your giving may be in secret and

  228. your father who sees what is in secret

  229. will reward you

  230. You know it's interesting when we put

  231. that scripture up because uh some people

  232. straight away are going good I relate to

  233. being the needy I I like please share

  234. about giving to the needy because uh

  235. that might mean there might be some uh

  236. chuch-ching coming my way if people

  237. listen to your sermon Probably in this

  238. economic climate all of us could

  239. identify with going flip I know what it

  240. is to be needy What's interesting is

  241. Jesus just said when you give to the

  242. needy because he had already established

  243. in the sermon on the mount earlier in

  244. Matthew chapter 5 he'd said give to the

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  245. one who begs from you and do not refuse

  246. the one who would borrow from you So

  247. Jesus assumes that his followers are

  248. going to be ones that will break

  249. oppression through generosity to those

  250. in need It's actually interesting He

  251. doesn't say take hold of your bank

  252. balance and decide whether it's

  253. comfortable to give to the needy or not

  254. He just says it is a command that we are

  255. to give to the

  256. needy That can raise a whole lot of

  257. tensions can't it Well what can I afford

  258. What needy do I give to to What happens

  259. if my giving to them actually causes

  260. some dependency and then they actually

  261. get dependent on giving and it

  262. reinforces laziness And what if my gift

  263. actually rather than be a blessing would

  264. be a curse Or what happens if I give it

  265. and they go and use it for drugs and

  266. alcohol Maybe it's better off in my

  267. pocket Now those are all genuine

  268. concerns that we need to have concerns

  269. about Am I being a good

  270. steward But here's a challenge for us We

  271. need to be very careful that we do not

  272. baptize our stinginess and call it

  273. stewardship

  274. you know that we do not say "Well this

  275. is just wisdom I'm just really careful

  276. before I give to the needy I know you

  277. can't give to every situation You can't

  278. give to everyone." But our disposition

  279. as believers according to Jesus should

  280. be one that lean in in acts of

  281. generosity to those in

  282. need And uh if you're like me sometimes

  283. you almost want to do a background

  284. check Oh you're needy I've just got 28

  285. questions for you to fill in you know

  286. and then I'll decide whether you meet my

  287. qualifications and whether you're going

  288. to be good seed or not I have a friend

  289. who works for World Vision and she her

  290. job is to fund raise She's just got the

  291. job three weeks ago She told one of her

  292. friends "I've got the job." Her friend

  293. said to her "Yeah but what about the

  294. local

  295. needs?" And uh she said "Oh that's

  296. awesome Tell me what you do to meet

  297. local needs."

  298. and her friend said "Oh nothing at the

  299. moment." You see it wasn't actually

  300. about having a heart for local needs It

  301. was just about a an excuse to not give

  302. And I think sometimes if we're honest

  303. we've actually hardened our hearts in

  304. areas of generosity We actually have

  305. answers and and narratives that we tell

  306. ourselves about why we can I love that

  307. Why lie I need beer

  308. It's like so

  309. honest You'll be pleased to know I did

  310. not sew into his beer ministry but I can

  311. tell you cuz it was funny He he was

  312. doing all right There were a lot of

  313. people who were um but I love that Why

  314. lie I need

  315. beer And I guess all of us when it comes

  316. to the needy there is that thought well

  317. what if this gets misused

  318. And I remember a good friend of mine he

  319. had someone come and live with him and

  320. they gave a lot financially to this

  321. person and it turned out that the person

  322. was manipulating them and they went back

  323. to their place of prayer and they were

  324. like "God why didn't I have discernment

  325. God why couldn't I see that this wasn't

  326. actually a gift that I was being

  327. manipulated?" And the Holy Spirit spoke

  328. to my friend and said

  329. this If you are never in a place where

  330. you give something that's been misused

  331. you're too

  332. stingy If you are always the gatekeeper

  333. in such a strict way that I'll never

  334. even let there be half an opportunity

  335. that my gift could be misused Now we do

  336. believe in wise giving stewardship all

  337. of that Yes But our default should be

  338. generosity and he felt the conviction of

  339. the Holy Spirit a as the spirit spoke to

  340. him and said "You didn't do the wrong

  341. thing you did the right thing because I

  342. want you leaning in with a posture of

  343. generosity." It's funny in central

  344. Targetago um we had one homeless man Um

  345. you know it's pretty rough If you're

  346. going to choose to be homeless -6°

  347. winters probably aren't where you want

  348. to do it So we didn't have a big

  349. homeless population when I was living in

  350. central but there was one guy and he

  351. would sit outside the library and I

  352. remember walking past one day and

  353. someone was stopping and talking to him

  354. and excuse the language it's not that

  355. bad language but he said "Not another

  356. bloody pie."

  357. Cuz like everyone went and the the dairy

  358. next to the library sold out of pies

  359. every day cuz everyone thought "I know

  360. what I'll do I'll go and buy the

  361. homeless guy." one homeless man he's

  362. getting like 26 offers of pies every day

  363. The dairy's going "This is amazing

  364. There's a bonanza on pies." And

  365. uh you know sometimes we can choose to

  366. be wise but we need to be people that

  367. are moving towards generosity

  368. You know when we give to people without

  369. deciding whether they are totally worthy

  370. of it or not we're actually being like

  371. God In Matthew 5 it tells us that he

  372. causes it to rain on the righteous and

  373. the unrighteous He causes his sun to

  374. shine on the righteous and the

  375. unrighteous So he's actually saying "Hey

  376. he doesn't God doesn't do a background

  377. check on all things He actually blesses

  378. humanity as a whole." He doesn't

  379. actually say "Well I'm going to see if

  380. yes there are some principles that we

  381. follow We receive blessings." But he

  382. doesn't withhold everything He actually

  383. blesses people who don't deserve

  384. it And we are actually invited into this

  385. practice of the kingdom that blesses

  386. people who don't deserve

  387. it Giving to those in need should be a

  388. secret practice

  389. Uh I get it's kind of not really

  390. appropriate to tell stories about times

  391. you've given when you're speaking about

  392. how giving should be secret right But

  393. there was this time in Alex where what

  394. would happen sometimes is it's really

  395. annoying when your phone number is on

  396. the church door because you'll get phone

  397. calls from people um telling you stories

  398. about what they need and you never have

  399. any idea You don't know them You don't

  400. know how serious it is You know Jesus

  401. said "Give to the needy," but you're

  402. like "I've got no idea who you are." And

  403. so I used to find it awkward I'll be

  404. honest Many times I said "Hey we have a

  405. Salvation Army in town They're amazing

  406. They can help you Thank God for the

  407. Sally's and uh would encourage them cuz

  408. uh to the Sies." But this Sunday night

  409. this dude phoned me and he said "Hey I'm

  410. I'm stuck in Alexandria and I need

  411. accommodation."

  412. And I was just about to filter through

  413. to whatever appropriate excuse I could

  414. find to um to sideways shuffle him And I

  415. just found a conviction that I was

  416. supposed to do something So I was like

  417. "Oh." And um I would love to say my

  418. discernment kicked in and thought it's

  419. not safe to have him in our home And

  420. that would have been true But it wasn't

  421. just discernment It was you know

  422. cowardice I'm like "He's not coming to

  423. my house." So I was like "Flip what do I

  424. do?" So I looked up local uh the local

  425. backpackers It's like "Oh they're full."

  426. I'm like "Ah." So I'm like "What do I

  427. do?" So uh like uh I'm trying to find

  428. the cheapest accommodation I can right

  429. Like I'm not going to the So I'm

  430. googling I go on to Airbnb I'm like "Let

  431. me check Airbnb." And so I see there's

  432. someone that has a caravan at their

  433. house off to the side I'm like "Yeah I

  434. could send them a vagabond to stay at

  435. that They'd probably really appreciate

  436. that." So I was like "Hey it's it's like

  437. $60 a night." And I see "Hey you can

  438. book it straight away Instant

  439. confirmation." I'm like great That way I

  440. know he's not taking me for a ride So I

  441. said to him hey because I told him I'd

  442. phone him back I said hey if it's really

  443. accommodation you're after I have some

  444. accommodation for you that I can book

  445. And so he said oh that would be amazing

  446. And I said okay well meet me here

  447. outside this place and I'll give you the

  448. money and you can go in and um that will

  449. be your accommodation And so I I pushed

  450. book on this place drove round there met

  451. him gave him the money and um he uh he

  452. phoned me 10 minutes later and said "Oh

  453. no The the the people who run the

  454. caravan were actually away and they

  455. don't have accommodation for me." Um so

  456. I said to him "Well look hey you've got

  457. that money You know go and find

  458. somewhere you'll be okay." What was

  459. hilarious was you know so your giving is

  460. supposed to be in secret but I didn't

  461. realize I booked it on my Airbnb Well

  462. someone came home They checked their

  463. thing and they actually knew who we were

  464. And so I think they were like "Sarah's

  465. finally kicked him out The pastor's

  466. booking a caravan in his name on Sunday

  467. night We're all waiting for her to

  468. finally get sick of him." And uh so she

  469. she phoned me the next day and said "Did

  470. you try and book my

  471. caravan?" It was a little bit

  472. embarrassing to say "No it wasn't for me

  473. I was trying to put a drifter into your

  474. house um so that they didn't have to

  475. come in mine." And I reflected on it I

  476. was like "Oh I don't know if I was being

  477. generous or what I was doing." But the

  478. reality is this Our giving is supposed

  479. to be a secret

  480. practice What it actually says is when

  481. you give

  482. uh like the hypocrites who it says sound

  483. trumpets Now some people have said that

  484. literally that's what happened Uh

  485. there's really no evidence for that This

  486. wasn't a literal practice that they

  487. sounded a trumpet when they gave It was

  488. just a turn of phrase to say it's like

  489. blowing your own trumpet The guys who

  490. gave gifts and wanted to be seen by

  491. everyone The word literally translates

  492. to your reward will be received in full

  493. There is no other reward for you That if

  494. you've given in a way that is to be seen

  495. by other

  496. people you receive your reward in full

  497. Now the challenging thing for us is this

  498. is a subtle thing right it doesn't it

  499. doesn't it's not grandstanding very few

  500. of us go wow I really want to be seen to

  501. my giving it's far more subtle than that

  502. you know it's what happens if you give

  503. and someone doesn't say thank

  504. you that's not that's not a good feeling

  505. and so this idea that it is to be secret

  506. but here's the danger if it's not secret

  507. you receive your reward in full through

  508. the praise of people And can I suggest

  509. to you that is a very shallow reward

  510. because the same people that say thank

  511. you one time will judge your gift the

  512. next time The same people who say "Wow

  513. that was so amazing that you gave Next

  514. time will be like,"Wow they didn't give

  515. to me this time I was in need." Or or

  516. they think they're so mighty with their

  517. giving but what about this need or that

  518. need A and and and I guess we've all

  519. done it in at times where we actually

  520. judge what someone else is doing with

  521. their finances And it's a it's a shallow

  522. reward to be rewarded with

  523. acknowledgement from people because the

  524. people who praise you for giving will

  525. equally be the ones who the next day

  526. will criticize you for what you didn't

  527. give or that you didn't give enough You

  528. know it's a little bit like the the lady

  529. pouring the perfume over

  530. Jesus And Judas says "Wow that could

  531. have been money could have been given

  532. and sold for the poor He didn't actually

  533. have a heart for the poor I always find

  534. it interesting It's when people say to

  535. you you know well God can't be real

  536. because there are starving children in

  537. the world And again you say to them oh

  538. that's so awesome that you've got a

  539. heart for starving children What are you

  540. doing Oh

  541. nothing And so you're holding God to a

  542. standard but you could meet something

  543. but you're not

  544. And you know sometimes we can be in

  545. environments where we

  546. actually spiritualize and we I remember

  547. being in a prayer meeting where

  548. someone's car had broken down and they

  549. were asking for prayer because they

  550. could not afford the repairs But when

  551. you stopped and looked around how many

  552. people were in the prayer meeting it's

  553. like we could actually just choose not

  554. to pray about it and each give

  555. $20 and their car would be fixed

  556. Or we could go man we really need to

  557. extend our faith to believe for 250

  558. Let's believe for breakthrough Let's

  559. pray that the windows of heaven would be

  560. opened And I believe sometimes God's

  561. sitting there going it's not the windows

  562. of heaven that needs to be opened it's

  563. your

  564. wallet You know just just just open your

  565. wallet give make a difference A and

  566. sometimes we're super spiritual when we

  567. actually just need to be practical What

  568. about this one Sometimes we're like "Oh

  569. I'm just asking the Lord how much to

  570. give." I do believe the Lord sometimes

  571. directs

  572. us But I I also believe he actually

  573. wants us to be generous without us

  574. having without him having to tell us

  575. what to

  576. do You know we sometimes don't ask the

  577. Lord before "What's the exact amount

  578. that I should spend on this television

  579. Lord Lord what's the exact amount I

  580. should spend on this What's the exact

  581. amount I should spend on that?" And I do

  582. believe that the Lord will sometimes

  583. guide us but I believe bigger than that

  584. what he actually wants is generous

  585. people What he actually wants is people

  586. who look like his son that will give

  587. without having been told what to give

  588. But there's actually generosity flowing

  589. out of our hearts to the

  590. needy See he says you know you shouldn't

  591. give in front of others And then he goes

  592. on to

  593. say,"Do not let your left hand know what

  594. your right hand is doing." And some

  595. would interpret this to say that often

  596. right hands are what they presented

  597. gifts with and left hands are what they

  598. received with And so left hand often

  599. talks about building yourself up about

  600. receiving and right hand talks about

  601. giving And so in part what he's saying

  602. is this Don't use your giving to puff up

  603. your ego Don't allow yourself to think

  604. more of yourself because of what you're

  605. giving Our giving should be to break

  606. down oppressive power structures not to

  607. put us in the place of power

  608. I always remember well not remember it

  609. was quite reasonably recently there was

  610. a situation where I'd given something to

  611. someone and then a little bit later they

  612. wanted to give something to me and I

  613. remember uh the words came out of my

  614. mouth no you don't have to do that and

  615. part of what I was thinking was that um

  616. they were in more need than me and I

  617. they didn't need to use their resources

  618. on me but as I heard the phrase come out

  619. of my mouth something triggered for me

  620. And when I went home and thought about

  621. it I felt so convicted that the Lord was

  622. like "You like being the person in the

  623. position of power You actually like to

  624. be the one that gives." Like you're

  625. using that giving because it actually

  626. places you in a position of power And so

  627. then when they want to give back to you

  628. you can't receive it because you

  629. actually like the idea that you don't

  630. need to receive anything from them

  631. I really wanted to argue about that but

  632. it was the

  633. Lord and sort of saying do not doesn't

  634. really work with

  635. God See

  636. sometimes we can give in an unhealthy

  637. way that's actually

  638. reinforcing our pride rather than

  639. humility

  640. And so he says "Hey don't even let your

  641. left hand know what your right hand is

  642. doing Give in such a way that you don't

  643. meditate on how amazing you are because

  644. of the gifts you've given but you

  645. actually are doing it in humility

  646. because you realize that the Lord has

  647. placed something on you Can you imagine

  648. every Christian within Moana how

  649. different it would be if we all had a

  650. heart to give to the needy I'm not

  651. saying we met every single need we come

  652. across I understand we can't do that But

  653. what would happen if we our generosity

  654. just changed one on the dial How

  655. different would the needy in our city

  656. be The awesome thing about giving is

  657. that it does carry a

  658. reward It's just the reward is not the

  659. things that we might be most likely to

  660. grab In Matthew 4:4 he says "If your

    Matthew 4:4

  661. giving is in secret our father who sees

  662. in secret will reward you." There's an

  663. awesome story in Acts 10 about Cornelius

  664. and and an angel actually turns

  665. up to visit Cornelius He has an

  666. encounter with an angel and the angel

  667. actually says "I am here because of your

  668. el prayers and your elm's giving." God

  669. has noticed what you gave And so an

  670. angel turned up because of his giving

  671. And and this isn't giving to the church

  672. that we're talking about This is giving

  673. to the poor Because he had given to the

  674. poor An angel turned up That's pretty

  675. amazing right Like that's quite a reward

  676. I cannot promise you that if you go out

  677. and give to the needy that tomorrow

  678. there'll be an angel in your room But

  679. what I can promise you is this The Bible

  680. says those who give to the poor lend to

  681. the Lord And it says he is our rewarder

  682. When we give to the needy we are storing

  683. up rewards from our father in

  684. heaven When I was uh in my early 20s I

  685. went on a mission trip to Florida Um a

  686. bit of a weird place to go on on a

  687. mission trip to It was doubly weird that

  688. it was a jet ski evangelism team

  689. True So it was a jet ski evangelism team

  690. Thankfully it was wet suits and not

  691. speedos So that was a good um that was a

  692. good thing But what would the idea was

  693. that we would uh get on these jet skis

  694. uh jet ski into a bay in Florida and

  695. five jet skis would turn up and then

  696. we'd preach the gospel on the beach and

  697. and share the love of Jesus Well while

  698. we're in the Florida Keys there's a

  699. large homeless population in the Florida

  700. Keys because it's so warm year round

  701. right So a lot of the homeless move

  702. there particularly during winter and we

  703. were there during winter because it's

  704. quite mild And so they said "Hey

  705. tomorrow we're going to go out with this

  706. team who work with the homeless." And I

  707. was like "Okay." And so when we turned

  708. up it wasn't a team It was actually just

  709. a cap a couple And

  710. uh we'll call them Jack and Judy I think

  711. that was their name So um Jack and Judy

  712. were like there and they were like "Let

  713. us tell you our story." And Jack's like

  714. "I was I own several businesses." who's

  715. I actually uh had a house with a lake

  716. and a uh airport hanger and a runway at

  717. my house and um I was thinking "Oh he

  718. must have crashed." You know like he

  719. must have lost everything No he didn't

  720. lose everything He said "I just hit a

  721. certain age in my life and there was so

  722. much emptiness." I was like "I've got

  723. everything but I'm just empty." He's

  724. like "It was like a spiritual midlife

  725. crisis." and he's like "Through a number

  726. of steps I ended up selling everything

  727. and moving to Florida at to work with

  728. the homeless." And so so we're going to

  729. take you out today So what happened was

  730. they took us out and they had um these

  731. backpacks that we put on and they were

  732. full of cans and socks And you can

  733. imagine but I actually found the bag

  734. quite heavy And so uh there there were

  735. socks and cans of food The first guys we

  736. got to got cans of food not socks I was

  737. smart enough to realize if I give out

  738. the cans of food that will um lighten my

  739. load So they're like got any socks No

  740. Yeah Have some cans of food I've got a

  741. real spirit of generosity about

  742. me And you know I remember we this guy

  743. would have been in his early 60s You

  744. wouldn't really think he would relate to

  745. um these guys but he'd just been

  746. building into their lives over an

  747. extended period You know he knew

  748. everything We walked down a thing He

  749. said "See those bushes there?" He said

  750. "There'll be some homeless living in

  751. there." He said "Do you know what that

  752. fence is?" No I don't know what the

  753. fence is That fence is uh the other side

  754. of that fence is the nicest golf course

  755. in the Florida Keys He said "It's $800

  756. to play around in that golf course and

  757. there's a fence and there's people

  758. sleeping behind it." You're like "Wow."

  759. And then you know we go down under the

  760. bridge and he knows there's one guy

  761. who's got his warrant out And so um with

  762. all the coolness and swagger of a 63y

  763. old he starts going "Bad boy bad boy

  764. what you gonna do to this homeless guy

  765. because he because he's got a warrant

  766. out and he's gonna uh be arrested right

  767. And so we're going through and we get

  768. back and we sit down and he kind of has

  769. this fatherly moment with the team and

  770. he sits down and I'm thinking about the

  771. as he talks I'm thinking about the cans

  772. that I was so keen to get rid of And he

  773. said "Do you know what I've learned

  774. through this ministry

  775. When we give to others who are in need

  776. we release our own burden and our own

  777. burden becomes lighter But if we come

  778. back with that which we were called to

  779. give it actually ends up weighing us

  780. down If we come back with the things

  781. that we were supposed to be giving to

  782. the needy and we carry them ultimately

  783. they end up weighing us down I do not

  784. know what reward the Lord wants to give

  785. you in relation to your giving But I do

  786. know this When we hold on to the things

  787. that God is calling us to give to the

  788. needy they no longer are a blessing to

  789. us They are now a burden And maybe part

  790. of our giving actually realigns

  791. something where that which was a burden

  792. to us given to someone else actually

  793. releases our burden and becomes a

  794. blessing

  795. I don't know what that looks like for

  796. you but we are going to have just a

  797. moment You want to close your eyes and

  798. maybe place your hand on your

  799. heart And Lord if we have been in

  800. positions where we've had

  801. narratives around giving and maybe we've

  802. had excuses of why not to give And Lord

  803. maybe it's hard because the only amount

  804. we can give is very small Lord I pray

  805. you would help us to be faithful with

  806. what we

  807. have Lord that you truly would be our

  808. reward Lord in our giving that burdens

  809. would fall off our life and Lord that

  810. people would be blessed Just as we close

  811. this morning I just want to pray for one

  812. more group of people here as we've been

  813. talking about giving You know we're

  814. gathered here as a church because we

  815. believe that Jesus gave everything for

  816. us The reason why we talk about giving

  817. is because our God is a giving God And

  818. we believe that Jesus came and died on a

  819. cross for the wrong things that we've

  820. done so that we could be connected with

  821. him And if you're in this place and

  822. either you you've you have known Jesus

  823. before but you're very far from him Or

  824. if you're in this place and you've never

  825. given your life to Jesus and maybe

  826. you're sitting here and thinking I know

  827. today is the day that I need to make

  828. that decision then I'm just going to ask

  829. everyone to close their eyes And if

  830. that's you this morning and you're in a

  831. place where you're like I know I need to

  832. come back to Jesus or I know I need to

  833. ask God into my life If that's you I'm

  834. the only one looking I'm just going to

  835. ask you to raise a hand

  836. I see that hand God bless I see that

  837. hand God bless

  838. you

  839. Five

  840. four

  841. three

  842. two one We're just going to say a prayer

  843. together Um and if you know if you've

  844. raised your hand everyone else is going

  845. to be in agreement with this prayer But

  846. we're just going to pray and uh we you

  847. don't need to say it out loud I'm just

  848. going to say the words but you can just

  849. echo them in your heart if this is a

  850. decision that you've made this morning

  851. Dear Lord Jesus I choose to give my life

  852. to you again I ask that you would

  853. forgive me of my sins the wrong things

  854. that I've done and you would give me a

  855. brand new start in life in

  856. relationship with

  857. you in Jesus' name Amen

  858. Hey if that was uh for anyone that said

  859. that prayer this morning um for the

  860. first time or a recommmitment we know uh

  861. that was a short prayer and that's

  862. really just the start of a relationship

  863. that God wants to continue to build with

  864. you So we'd love to be able to connect

  865. with you after this service Nathan's

  866. down here So Nathan do you want to stand

  867. up And so after the service if you said

  868. that prayer just come come down the

  869. front uh connect with Nathan He'd love

  870. to be able to pray for you and just us

  871. help you in your next step But apart

  872. from that we will hand back to

  873. Icel Come on church
