well I just feel uh in a moment uh Peter
-
and Karen are going to come and share
-
something with us briefly But before we
-
do that I just really want to uh pray
-
for Stefan And uh he's about to uh go up
-
and have uh actually an operation on his
-
brain And um I asked him this morning he
-
said "Well what it is is I've got
-
residency and so they've said they're
-
going to have to remove half my brain so
-
I fit in." And so
-
um he's French you know like um but man
-
can uh also for the D do you guys just
-
want to stand and could we just extend
-
our hands church and let's really uh
-
let's just believe for a miracle Father
-
in the name of Jesus Lord we pray Father
-
for divine health over Stefan Lord we
-
break every assignment of the enemy And
-
Lord we declare divine healing in Jesus'
-
name Lord we pray the peace of God even
-
as they travel to Oakland and Lord for
-
the surgery and for everything that's
-
going to happen But Lord we pray for an
-
amazing report Lord we speak to uh his
-
kidneys Lord we speak full health Lord
-
we break every assignment and in the
-
name of Jesus we bless this family Lord
-
to prosper in Jesus' name Amen Amen
-
Awesome And so let's keep him in our
-
prayers and just believe that God's
-
going to do something But uh Peter and
-
Karen do you guys want to come Uh it
-
would just be awesome to have these guys
-
come and share These guys go uh
-
regularly into the prisons to minister
-
and so they're just going to come and
-
give us a little update So uh welcome
-
guys
-
[Applause]
-
Can you hear
-
Um before we start into it um the Lord's
-
given me uh two scriptures and then uh
-
Karen will take over from there But they
-
but these scriptures come quite quite
-
clearly to me and um it's it's for us to
-
understand his word and to move with it
-
Yeah In Jesus name E okay The first one
-
is in
-
Romans Romans
-
10 chapter
-
14 How then shall they call on him in
-
whom they have not
-
believed And how shall they believe in
-
him whom they have not heard And how
-
shall they hear without a preacher And
-
how shall they preach unless they are
-
sent as it is written how beautiful are
-
the feet of those who preach the gospel
-
of peace who bring glad tidings of good
-
things So that's the first scripture And
-
the second scripture is
-
in
-
Ephesians Ephesians 6:12
-
For we do not wrestle against the flesh
-
and blood but against the
-
principalities against powers against
-
the rulers of the darkness of this age
-
against spiritual host of wickedness in
-
the heavenly
-
places So I'm going to leave it there
-
and Karen will carry on I think Is that
-
right Yes it will be
-
I was get you in the play Takes two to
-
tango you know Hey
-
Okay So um as you know Pete and I go to
-
the prison but we go with other people
-
So there's Koe that joins us Julianne
-
and Eley Um and at the moment that's our
-
team that go in there Now we go there
-
from here We go as the representative of
-
the Lord The reason we've come here
-
today is we need the church because it
-
is a spiritual battle where we're going
-
We're not going to a church building
-
We're going to the enemy's ground every
-
time we go there We need to be covered
-
by the blood But at the moment the
-
battle is with the
-
system Every few years the contract
-
comes up for the prison ministry for the
-
prisons And at this year it's coming up
-
They're already in negotiations and
-
talks which take a few months We need
-
the church to be praying not just for us
-
but for prison ministry to stay at the
-
head of the Christians We need the
-
Christians to be at the head because the
-
Lord calls us to be the head not the
-
tail Right We need to stay at the head
-
and the battle we're having is that
-
Islamic want that position
-
So we are fighting them as well They're
-
already doing zooms into the prison at
-
the moment and the talk is come and join
-
this because we can still
-
kill We need the church backing We need
-
your prayers your continuous prayers to
-
go into this place We need our
-
leadership to stay where it is
-
These guys need the salvation and we're
-
seeing the flood of God We're seeing the
-
miracles in there We're seeing his
-
presence flow through that place But we
-
need it to continue A lot of people
-
think you know it's just a place where
-
criminals go It's where they belong But
-
you know they got stories just like me
-
and you They've got stories and some of
-
them are heartbreaking stories And if we
-
were given a second chance they need
-
that They need a second chance God gave
-
me a second third fourth fifth sixth
-
chance So at least we can go in there
-
and give them that So please we need
-
your prayers to keep that head We need
-
the authority to stay where it is The
-
Lord the word the Lord gave us this year
-
for the prison was stand in the
-
authority we've been given
-
We stand in that authority every month
-
We don't fear going in there because we
-
know God's got our back We know that
-
going in there but we need the prayers
-
of our Christian brothers and sisters to
-
back the ministry of what God's put in
-
place And we always remember that
-
scripture that says those that didn't
-
visit those in prison didn't visit
-
me So please if we can just ask for your
-
continual prayer that Christianity stays
-
at the head Yeah Awesome Let's pray
-
today guys Father we thank you for this
-
awesome team And Lord thank you that
-
they are one of many teams throughout
-
the motu that are going in to see
-
prisoners set free And Lord we pray in
-
the name of Jesus that this would remain
-
an open door for the gospel Lord we
-
rebuke the plans of the enemy And Lord
-
we declare Lord not only will the door
-
remain open but Lord the fruitfulness
-
will increase in the name of Jesus Lord
-
that which the enemy meant for harm Lord
-
you would turn for good and there would
-
be the continued uh salvations and
-
harvest and miracles happening in the
-
prisons We anoint the team We bless them
-
We send them with grace and fire Lord we
-
thank you for their faithfulness in the
-
mighty name of Jesus Amen Amen Wonderful
-
Thanks guys
-
you know as a church um we talked about
-
we're leaning into prayer presence
-
mission and we we talked about how
-
prayer doesn't come easily to some
-
people And if if that's you I just
-
suggest you sign up to get Scott Rowley
-
to deliver you to the ladies uh high tea
-
because if you get in his car I think
-
it's about five liters your prayer life
-
will go to another level So you know
-
there's a hot tip right there If you're
-
struggling to pray you'll certainly be
-
closer to Jesus by the time uh you get
-
to uh the high tea That's for sure We
-
call it the Beer's School of
-
Intercession But uh hey we're um doing a
-
series at the moment that just started
-
two weeks ago and didn't just share so
-
well two weeks ago on the secret life
-
And uh as a church we're doing Lent And
-
Lent is the 40 days in the lead into
-
Easter And actually historically there
-
are three things that get practiced
-
during Lent And they are
-
almsgiving praying and fasting So these
-
are generally the three things that
-
actually hundreds of thousands if not
-
millions of believers all at the same
-
time will be leaning into these
-
practices And they're actually found in
-
Matthew 6 So they're found in Matthew 6
-
and they're attached to Jesus' command
-
that these are actually practices that
-
we do in secret And uh I realize we've
-
got a lot of visitors here this morning
-
And uh this morning we're actually
-
speaking on the practice of giving And
-
uh I know uh that can cause all kinds of
-
things People love it when pastors talk
-
about money uh but this morning we are
-
talking about the practice of giving and
-
the New Testament gives us two
-
priorities for giving uh I I believe and
-
that's number one is giving to the
-
church and number two is giving to the
-
needy Now this uh in Lent and and this
-
passage in Matthew it's actually talking
-
about giving to the needy though that
-
all of us as believers should actually
-
have a ministry where we give to people
-
who are in need And certainly as a
-
church we practice this We sew into
-
different ministries and into different
-
people and uh a and and that help the
-
needy And so this morning we're going to
-
unpack this a little bit And in Matthew
-
6 it says this "When you give to the
-
needy sound no trumpet before you as the
-
hypocrites do in the synagogues and in
-
the streets that they may be praised by
-
others Truly I say to you they have
-
received their reward But when you give
-
to the needy do not left let your left
-
hand know what your right hand is doing
-
so that your giving may be in secret and
-
your father who sees what is in secret
-
will reward you
-
You know it's interesting when we put
-
that scripture up because uh some people
-
straight away are going good I relate to
-
being the needy I I like please share
-
about giving to the needy because uh
-
that might mean there might be some uh
-
chuch-ching coming my way if people
-
listen to your sermon Probably in this
-
economic climate all of us could
-
identify with going flip I know what it
-
is to be needy What's interesting is
-
Jesus just said when you give to the
-
needy because he had already established
-
in the sermon on the mount earlier in
-
Matthew chapter 5 he'd said give to the
Matthew 5 chapter mention
-
one who begs from you and do not refuse
-
the one who would borrow from you So
-
Jesus assumes that his followers are
-
going to be ones that will break
-
oppression through generosity to those
-
in need It's actually interesting He
-
doesn't say take hold of your bank
-
balance and decide whether it's
-
comfortable to give to the needy or not
-
He just says it is a command that we are
-
to give to the
-
needy That can raise a whole lot of
-
tensions can't it Well what can I afford
-
What needy do I give to to What happens
-
if my giving to them actually causes
-
some dependency and then they actually
-
get dependent on giving and it
-
reinforces laziness And what if my gift
-
actually rather than be a blessing would
-
be a curse Or what happens if I give it
-
and they go and use it for drugs and
-
alcohol Maybe it's better off in my
-
pocket Now those are all genuine
-
concerns that we need to have concerns
-
about Am I being a good
-
steward But here's a challenge for us We
-
need to be very careful that we do not
-
baptize our stinginess and call it
-
stewardship
-
you know that we do not say "Well this
-
is just wisdom I'm just really careful
-
before I give to the needy I know you
-
can't give to every situation You can't
-
give to everyone." But our disposition
-
as believers according to Jesus should
-
be one that lean in in acts of
-
generosity to those in
-
need And uh if you're like me sometimes
-
you almost want to do a background
-
check Oh you're needy I've just got 28
-
questions for you to fill in you know
-
and then I'll decide whether you meet my
-
qualifications and whether you're going
-
to be good seed or not I have a friend
-
who works for World Vision and she her
-
job is to fund raise She's just got the
-
job three weeks ago She told one of her
-
friends "I've got the job." Her friend
-
said to her "Yeah but what about the
-
local
-
needs?" And uh she said "Oh that's
-
awesome Tell me what you do to meet
-
local needs."
-
and her friend said "Oh nothing at the
-
moment." You see it wasn't actually
-
about having a heart for local needs It
-
was just about a an excuse to not give
-
And I think sometimes if we're honest
-
we've actually hardened our hearts in
-
areas of generosity We actually have
-
answers and and narratives that we tell
-
ourselves about why we can I love that
-
Why lie I need beer
-
It's like so
-
honest You'll be pleased to know I did
-
not sew into his beer ministry but I can
-
tell you cuz it was funny He he was
-
doing all right There were a lot of
-
people who were um but I love that Why
-
lie I need
-
beer And I guess all of us when it comes
-
to the needy there is that thought well
-
what if this gets misused
-
And I remember a good friend of mine he
-
had someone come and live with him and
-
they gave a lot financially to this
-
person and it turned out that the person
-
was manipulating them and they went back
-
to their place of prayer and they were
-
like "God why didn't I have discernment
-
God why couldn't I see that this wasn't
-
actually a gift that I was being
-
manipulated?" And the Holy Spirit spoke
-
to my friend and said
-
this If you are never in a place where
-
you give something that's been misused
-
you're too
-
stingy If you are always the gatekeeper
-
in such a strict way that I'll never
-
even let there be half an opportunity
-
that my gift could be misused Now we do
-
believe in wise giving stewardship all
-
of that Yes But our default should be
-
generosity and he felt the conviction of
-
the Holy Spirit a as the spirit spoke to
-
him and said "You didn't do the wrong
-
thing you did the right thing because I
-
want you leaning in with a posture of
-
generosity." It's funny in central
-
Targetago um we had one homeless man Um
-
you know it's pretty rough If you're
-
going to choose to be homeless -6°
-
winters probably aren't where you want
-
to do it So we didn't have a big
-
homeless population when I was living in
-
central but there was one guy and he
-
would sit outside the library and I
-
remember walking past one day and
-
someone was stopping and talking to him
-
and excuse the language it's not that
-
bad language but he said "Not another
-
bloody pie."
-
Cuz like everyone went and the the dairy
-
next to the library sold out of pies
-
every day cuz everyone thought "I know
-
what I'll do I'll go and buy the
-
homeless guy." one homeless man he's
-
getting like 26 offers of pies every day
-
The dairy's going "This is amazing
-
There's a bonanza on pies." And
-
uh you know sometimes we can choose to
-
be wise but we need to be people that
-
are moving towards generosity
-
You know when we give to people without
-
deciding whether they are totally worthy
-
of it or not we're actually being like
-
God In Matthew 5 it tells us that he
-
causes it to rain on the righteous and
-
the unrighteous He causes his sun to
-
shine on the righteous and the
-
unrighteous So he's actually saying "Hey
-
he doesn't God doesn't do a background
-
check on all things He actually blesses
-
humanity as a whole." He doesn't
-
actually say "Well I'm going to see if
-
yes there are some principles that we
-
follow We receive blessings." But he
-
doesn't withhold everything He actually
-
blesses people who don't deserve
-
it And we are actually invited into this
-
practice of the kingdom that blesses
-
people who don't deserve
-
it Giving to those in need should be a
-
secret practice
-
Uh I get it's kind of not really
-
appropriate to tell stories about times
-
you've given when you're speaking about
-
how giving should be secret right But
-
there was this time in Alex where what
-
would happen sometimes is it's really
-
annoying when your phone number is on
-
the church door because you'll get phone
-
calls from people um telling you stories
-
about what they need and you never have
-
any idea You don't know them You don't
-
know how serious it is You know Jesus
-
said "Give to the needy," but you're
-
like "I've got no idea who you are." And
-
so I used to find it awkward I'll be
-
honest Many times I said "Hey we have a
-
Salvation Army in town They're amazing
-
They can help you Thank God for the
-
Sally's and uh would encourage them cuz
-
uh to the Sies." But this Sunday night
-
this dude phoned me and he said "Hey I'm
-
I'm stuck in Alexandria and I need
-
accommodation."
-
And I was just about to filter through
-
to whatever appropriate excuse I could
-
find to um to sideways shuffle him And I
-
just found a conviction that I was
-
supposed to do something So I was like
-
"Oh." And um I would love to say my
-
discernment kicked in and thought it's
-
not safe to have him in our home And
-
that would have been true But it wasn't
-
just discernment It was you know
-
cowardice I'm like "He's not coming to
-
my house." So I was like "Flip what do I
-
do?" So I looked up local uh the local
-
backpackers It's like "Oh they're full."
-
I'm like "Ah." So I'm like "What do I
-
do?" So uh like uh I'm trying to find
-
the cheapest accommodation I can right
-
Like I'm not going to the So I'm
-
googling I go on to Airbnb I'm like "Let
-
me check Airbnb." And so I see there's
-
someone that has a caravan at their
-
house off to the side I'm like "Yeah I
-
could send them a vagabond to stay at
-
that They'd probably really appreciate
-
that." So I was like "Hey it's it's like
-
$60 a night." And I see "Hey you can
-
book it straight away Instant
-
confirmation." I'm like great That way I
-
know he's not taking me for a ride So I
-
said to him hey because I told him I'd
-
phone him back I said hey if it's really
-
accommodation you're after I have some
-
accommodation for you that I can book
-
And so he said oh that would be amazing
-
And I said okay well meet me here
-
outside this place and I'll give you the
-
money and you can go in and um that will
-
be your accommodation And so I I pushed
-
book on this place drove round there met
-
him gave him the money and um he uh he
-
phoned me 10 minutes later and said "Oh
-
no The the the people who run the
-
caravan were actually away and they
-
don't have accommodation for me." Um so
-
I said to him "Well look hey you've got
-
that money You know go and find
-
somewhere you'll be okay." What was
-
hilarious was you know so your giving is
-
supposed to be in secret but I didn't
-
realize I booked it on my Airbnb Well
-
someone came home They checked their
-
thing and they actually knew who we were
-
And so I think they were like "Sarah's
-
finally kicked him out The pastor's
-
booking a caravan in his name on Sunday
-
night We're all waiting for her to
-
finally get sick of him." And uh so she
-
she phoned me the next day and said "Did
-
you try and book my
-
caravan?" It was a little bit
-
embarrassing to say "No it wasn't for me
-
I was trying to put a drifter into your
-
house um so that they didn't have to
-
come in mine." And I reflected on it I
-
was like "Oh I don't know if I was being
-
generous or what I was doing." But the
-
reality is this Our giving is supposed
-
to be a secret
-
practice What it actually says is when
-
you give
-
uh like the hypocrites who it says sound
-
trumpets Now some people have said that
-
literally that's what happened Uh
-
there's really no evidence for that This
-
wasn't a literal practice that they
-
sounded a trumpet when they gave It was
-
just a turn of phrase to say it's like
-
blowing your own trumpet The guys who
-
gave gifts and wanted to be seen by
-
everyone The word literally translates
-
to your reward will be received in full
-
There is no other reward for you That if
-
you've given in a way that is to be seen
-
by other
-
people you receive your reward in full
-
Now the challenging thing for us is this
-
is a subtle thing right it doesn't it
-
doesn't it's not grandstanding very few
-
of us go wow I really want to be seen to
-
my giving it's far more subtle than that
-
you know it's what happens if you give
-
and someone doesn't say thank
-
you that's not that's not a good feeling
-
and so this idea that it is to be secret
-
but here's the danger if it's not secret
-
you receive your reward in full through
-
the praise of people And can I suggest
-
to you that is a very shallow reward
-
because the same people that say thank
-
you one time will judge your gift the
-
next time The same people who say "Wow
-
that was so amazing that you gave Next
-
time will be like,"Wow they didn't give
-
to me this time I was in need." Or or
-
they think they're so mighty with their
-
giving but what about this need or that
-
need A and and and I guess we've all
-
done it in at times where we actually
-
judge what someone else is doing with
-
their finances And it's a it's a shallow
-
reward to be rewarded with
-
acknowledgement from people because the
-
people who praise you for giving will
-
equally be the ones who the next day
-
will criticize you for what you didn't
-
give or that you didn't give enough You
-
know it's a little bit like the the lady
-
pouring the perfume over
-
Jesus And Judas says "Wow that could
-
have been money could have been given
-
and sold for the poor He didn't actually
-
have a heart for the poor I always find
-
it interesting It's when people say to
-
you you know well God can't be real
-
because there are starving children in
-
the world And again you say to them oh
-
that's so awesome that you've got a
-
heart for starving children What are you
-
doing Oh
-
nothing And so you're holding God to a
-
standard but you could meet something
-
but you're not
-
And you know sometimes we can be in
-
environments where we
-
actually spiritualize and we I remember
-
being in a prayer meeting where
-
someone's car had broken down and they
-
were asking for prayer because they
-
could not afford the repairs But when
-
you stopped and looked around how many
-
people were in the prayer meeting it's
-
like we could actually just choose not
-
to pray about it and each give
-
$20 and their car would be fixed
-
Or we could go man we really need to
-
extend our faith to believe for 250
-
Let's believe for breakthrough Let's
-
pray that the windows of heaven would be
-
opened And I believe sometimes God's
-
sitting there going it's not the windows
-
of heaven that needs to be opened it's
-
your
-
wallet You know just just just open your
-
wallet give make a difference A and
-
sometimes we're super spiritual when we
-
actually just need to be practical What
-
about this one Sometimes we're like "Oh
-
I'm just asking the Lord how much to
-
give." I do believe the Lord sometimes
-
directs
-
us But I I also believe he actually
-
wants us to be generous without us
-
having without him having to tell us
-
what to
-
do You know we sometimes don't ask the
-
Lord before "What's the exact amount
-
that I should spend on this television
-
Lord Lord what's the exact amount I
-
should spend on this What's the exact
-
amount I should spend on that?" And I do
-
believe that the Lord will sometimes
-
guide us but I believe bigger than that
-
what he actually wants is generous
-
people What he actually wants is people
-
who look like his son that will give
-
without having been told what to give
-
But there's actually generosity flowing
-
out of our hearts to the
-
needy See he says you know you shouldn't
-
give in front of others And then he goes
-
on to
-
say,"Do not let your left hand know what
-
your right hand is doing." And some
-
would interpret this to say that often
-
right hands are what they presented
-
gifts with and left hands are what they
-
received with And so left hand often
-
talks about building yourself up about
-
receiving and right hand talks about
-
giving And so in part what he's saying
-
is this Don't use your giving to puff up
-
your ego Don't allow yourself to think
-
more of yourself because of what you're
-
giving Our giving should be to break
-
down oppressive power structures not to
-
put us in the place of power
-
I always remember well not remember it
-
was quite reasonably recently there was
-
a situation where I'd given something to
-
someone and then a little bit later they
-
wanted to give something to me and I
-
remember uh the words came out of my
-
mouth no you don't have to do that and
-
part of what I was thinking was that um
-
they were in more need than me and I
-
they didn't need to use their resources
-
on me but as I heard the phrase come out
-
of my mouth something triggered for me
-
And when I went home and thought about
-
it I felt so convicted that the Lord was
-
like "You like being the person in the
-
position of power You actually like to
-
be the one that gives." Like you're
-
using that giving because it actually
-
places you in a position of power And so
-
then when they want to give back to you
-
you can't receive it because you
-
actually like the idea that you don't
-
need to receive anything from them
-
I really wanted to argue about that but
-
it was the
-
Lord and sort of saying do not doesn't
-
really work with
-
God See
-
sometimes we can give in an unhealthy
-
way that's actually
-
reinforcing our pride rather than
-
humility
-
And so he says "Hey don't even let your
-
left hand know what your right hand is
-
doing Give in such a way that you don't
-
meditate on how amazing you are because
-
of the gifts you've given but you
-
actually are doing it in humility
-
because you realize that the Lord has
-
placed something on you Can you imagine
-
every Christian within Moana how
-
different it would be if we all had a
-
heart to give to the needy I'm not
-
saying we met every single need we come
-
across I understand we can't do that But
-
what would happen if we our generosity
-
just changed one on the dial How
-
different would the needy in our city
-
be The awesome thing about giving is
-
that it does carry a
-
reward It's just the reward is not the
-
things that we might be most likely to
-
grab In Matthew 4:4 he says "If your
-
giving is in secret our father who sees
-
in secret will reward you." There's an
-
awesome story in Acts 10 about Cornelius
-
and and an angel actually turns
-
up to visit Cornelius He has an
-
encounter with an angel and the angel
-
actually says "I am here because of your
-
el prayers and your elm's giving." God
-
has noticed what you gave And so an
-
angel turned up because of his giving
-
And and this isn't giving to the church
-
that we're talking about This is giving
-
to the poor Because he had given to the
-
poor An angel turned up That's pretty
-
amazing right Like that's quite a reward
-
I cannot promise you that if you go out
-
and give to the needy that tomorrow
-
there'll be an angel in your room But
-
what I can promise you is this The Bible
-
says those who give to the poor lend to
-
the Lord And it says he is our rewarder
-
When we give to the needy we are storing
-
up rewards from our father in
-
heaven When I was uh in my early 20s I
-
went on a mission trip to Florida Um a
-
bit of a weird place to go on on a
-
mission trip to It was doubly weird that
-
it was a jet ski evangelism team
-
True So it was a jet ski evangelism team
-
Thankfully it was wet suits and not
-
speedos So that was a good um that was a
-
good thing But what would the idea was
-
that we would uh get on these jet skis
-
uh jet ski into a bay in Florida and
-
five jet skis would turn up and then
-
we'd preach the gospel on the beach and
-
and share the love of Jesus Well while
-
we're in the Florida Keys there's a
-
large homeless population in the Florida
-
Keys because it's so warm year round
-
right So a lot of the homeless move
-
there particularly during winter and we
-
were there during winter because it's
-
quite mild And so they said "Hey
-
tomorrow we're going to go out with this
-
team who work with the homeless." And I
-
was like "Okay." And so when we turned
-
up it wasn't a team It was actually just
-
a cap a couple And
-
uh we'll call them Jack and Judy I think
-
that was their name So um Jack and Judy
-
were like there and they were like "Let
-
us tell you our story." And Jack's like
-
"I was I own several businesses." who's
-
I actually uh had a house with a lake
-
and a uh airport hanger and a runway at
-
my house and um I was thinking "Oh he
-
must have crashed." You know like he
-
must have lost everything No he didn't
-
lose everything He said "I just hit a
-
certain age in my life and there was so
-
much emptiness." I was like "I've got
-
everything but I'm just empty." He's
-
like "It was like a spiritual midlife
-
crisis." and he's like "Through a number
-
of steps I ended up selling everything
-
and moving to Florida at to work with
-
the homeless." And so so we're going to
-
take you out today So what happened was
-
they took us out and they had um these
-
backpacks that we put on and they were
-
full of cans and socks And you can
-
imagine but I actually found the bag
-
quite heavy And so uh there there were
-
socks and cans of food The first guys we
-
got to got cans of food not socks I was
-
smart enough to realize if I give out
-
the cans of food that will um lighten my
-
load So they're like got any socks No
-
Yeah Have some cans of food I've got a
-
real spirit of generosity about
-
me And you know I remember we this guy
-
would have been in his early 60s You
-
wouldn't really think he would relate to
-
um these guys but he'd just been
-
building into their lives over an
-
extended period You know he knew
-
everything We walked down a thing He
-
said "See those bushes there?" He said
-
"There'll be some homeless living in
-
there." He said "Do you know what that
-
fence is?" No I don't know what the
-
fence is That fence is uh the other side
-
of that fence is the nicest golf course
-
in the Florida Keys He said "It's $800
-
to play around in that golf course and
-
there's a fence and there's people
-
sleeping behind it." You're like "Wow."
-
And then you know we go down under the
-
bridge and he knows there's one guy
-
who's got his warrant out And so um with
-
all the coolness and swagger of a 63y
-
old he starts going "Bad boy bad boy
-
what you gonna do to this homeless guy
-
because he because he's got a warrant
-
out and he's gonna uh be arrested right
-
And so we're going through and we get
-
back and we sit down and he kind of has
-
this fatherly moment with the team and
-
he sits down and I'm thinking about the
-
as he talks I'm thinking about the cans
-
that I was so keen to get rid of And he
-
said "Do you know what I've learned
-
through this ministry
-
When we give to others who are in need
-
we release our own burden and our own
-
burden becomes lighter But if we come
-
back with that which we were called to
-
give it actually ends up weighing us
-
down If we come back with the things
-
that we were supposed to be giving to
-
the needy and we carry them ultimately
-
they end up weighing us down I do not
-
know what reward the Lord wants to give
-
you in relation to your giving But I do
-
know this When we hold on to the things
-
that God is calling us to give to the
-
needy they no longer are a blessing to
-
us They are now a burden And maybe part
-
of our giving actually realigns
-
something where that which was a burden
-
to us given to someone else actually
-
releases our burden and becomes a
-
blessing
-
I don't know what that looks like for
-
you but we are going to have just a
-
moment You want to close your eyes and
-
maybe place your hand on your
-
heart And Lord if we have been in
-
positions where we've had
-
narratives around giving and maybe we've
-
had excuses of why not to give And Lord
-
maybe it's hard because the only amount
-
we can give is very small Lord I pray
-
you would help us to be faithful with
-
what we
-
have Lord that you truly would be our
-
reward Lord in our giving that burdens
-
would fall off our life and Lord that
-
people would be blessed Just as we close
-
this morning I just want to pray for one
-
more group of people here as we've been
-
talking about giving You know we're
-
gathered here as a church because we
-
believe that Jesus gave everything for
-
us The reason why we talk about giving
-
is because our God is a giving God And
-
we believe that Jesus came and died on a
-
cross for the wrong things that we've
-
done so that we could be connected with
-
him And if you're in this place and
-
either you you've you have known Jesus
-
before but you're very far from him Or
-
if you're in this place and you've never
-
given your life to Jesus and maybe
-
you're sitting here and thinking I know
-
today is the day that I need to make
-
that decision then I'm just going to ask
-
everyone to close their eyes And if
-
that's you this morning and you're in a
-
place where you're like I know I need to
-
come back to Jesus or I know I need to
-
ask God into my life If that's you I'm
-
the only one looking I'm just going to
-
ask you to raise a hand
-
I see that hand God bless I see that
-
hand God bless
-
you
-
Five
-
four
-
three
-
two one We're just going to say a prayer
-
together Um and if you know if you've
-
raised your hand everyone else is going
-
to be in agreement with this prayer But
-
we're just going to pray and uh we you
-
don't need to say it out loud I'm just
-
going to say the words but you can just
-
echo them in your heart if this is a
-
decision that you've made this morning
-
Dear Lord Jesus I choose to give my life
-
to you again I ask that you would
-
forgive me of my sins the wrong things
-
that I've done and you would give me a
-
brand new start in life in
-
relationship with
-
you in Jesus' name Amen
-
Hey if that was uh for anyone that said
-
that prayer this morning um for the
-
first time or a recommmitment we know uh
-
that was a short prayer and that's
-
really just the start of a relationship
-
that God wants to continue to build with
-
you So we'd love to be able to connect
-
with you after this service Nathan's
-
down here So Nathan do you want to stand
-
up And so after the service if you said
-
that prayer just come come down the
-
front uh connect with Nathan He'd love
-
to be able to pray for you and just us
-
help you in your next step But apart
-
from that we will hand back to
-
Icel Come on church
