  1. as a a church we have been leaning into

  2. lent this season and uh you know I know

  3. for have heard some reports for some

  4. people some people are loving it some

  5. people are finding a lint a bit of a

  6. grind and uh all of that's okay I do

  7. have good news for you actually within

  8. the church calendar uh the way they

  9. would operate was um after period of

  10. lent you had the 50 days between uh

  11. Resurrection Sunday and Pentecost and

  12. there would actually be no fasting so

  13. you weren't allowed to fast during that

  14. period And so that might be a good news

  15. if you are feeling like you're in the

  16. lent grind but this morning uh we are

  17. continuing our series called The Secret

  18. Life and uh historically the church as

  19. theyve practiced lent have generally

  20. leaned into three uh areas and it's uh

  21. giving praying and fasting and so uh

  22. last week we talked about fasting and

  23. this week we're going to talk about

  24. prayer and I realize um because we've

  25. really been leaning into this prayer

  26. presence and Mission you know I've

  27. spoken about prayer a few times um in

  28. the last year but I know uh as soon as

  29. we talk about our personal prayer life

  30. uh for many of us there can be a Feeling

  31. of uh like uh conviction or uh in some

  32. cases condemnation or or like man I

  33. don't know if that's really uh if I'm

  34. that good I tried once to establish

  35. patterns or I tried seven times to

  36. establish patterns and you know I I've

  37. struggled in it and so this morning I

  38. hope to maybe give a framework of

  39. something that might may be helpful to

  40. uh establishing a new rhythm of prayer

  41. but I want to start by saying man there

  42. is uh no condemnation so if the idea of

  43. prayer makes you begin to feel less than

  44. let's just take that off the table let's

  45. just remove that feeling that God's

  46. mercies are new every morning and you

  47. know even if you have struggled with

  48. prayer in the past that doesn't mean

  49. that you weren't created to pray do you

  50. know there was a day when you uh tried

  51. to walk and you fell

  52. over can you imagine if your parents had

  53. said wow they're just not designed to

  54. walk I guess they're just no good at it

  55. like it would be pretty flipping awkward

  56. when you crawled into church this

  57. morning

  58. right do you know the first taste of

  59. food that you had you spat

  60. Out imagine if your parents had said

  61. well I guess they're just not built for

  62. solids it would be pretty awkward at

  63. work tomorrow when it gets to smoko time

  64. and your mom turns up to give you a feed

  65. like my goodness I just go what's up

  66. with you bro oh no solids aren't my

  67. thing what happened well I spat out food

  68. eight times and so I don't bother with

  69. it anymore more like that's an awkward

  70. moment

  71. right hopefully bottle fed you

  72. know too

  73. far but here's the thing all of us rely

  74. on eating walking simply but even these

  75. simple things that we rely on did not

  76. come instinctively to us we had to grow

  77. in them and so prayer is something that

  78. is foundational to our Christian walk

  79. but it's also something we need to grow

  80. in and the idea that because I struggle

  81. means well that's just not me isn't true

  82. it would be no different than struggling

  83. to learn to eat or struggling to learn

  84. to walk and the Lord wants to invite us

  85. into something

  86. so this morning I'm going to take us

  87. through um The Lord's Prayer in just a

  88. moment but it starts in Matthew 6 where

  89. uh Jesus says when you go and pray in

  90. your room shut the door and pray to your

  91. father who is in secret and when your

  92. father sees you in secret he will reward

  93. you and when you pray do not Heap up

  94. empty phrases saying lots of words as

  95. the Pentecostals do oh no sorry as the

  96. Gentiles do for they think they'll be

  97. heard because of their many words do not

  98. be like them for your father knows what

  99. you need before you hear him and so

  100. Jesus here says hey if we're to have a

  101. secret life like we're talking about our

  102. personal private prayer time he's like

  103. hey you're going to need a place and a

  104. time that you set aside and maybe for

  105. some of us we've gone through rhythms or

  106. maybe some of us are in a rhythm right

  107. now where it's like yes I have my set of

  108. side prayer time and it's going really

  109. well and maybe for some of us it's like

  110. man that Rhythm doesn't feel quite right

  111. and maybe this morning you would sense

  112. no condemnation but you would sense the

  113. invitation of God to reestablish that

  114. rhythm of prayer because it is our

  115. connection point to God so Jesus uh then

  116. taught them a prayer that is famously

  117. called The Lord's Prayer as uh Bill

  118. Johnson pointed out it's not the Lord's

  119. Prayer because Jesus didn't need to pray

  120. it because it's got confession of sin

  121. and Jesus never needed to confess sin so

  122. it's actually more like the disciples

  123. prayer or our prayer um and so uh

  124. commonly also called the Our father and

  125. I believe it's a powerful prayer that we

  126. can pray but also one of the things it

  127. can do is actually help scaffold our

  128. prayer life so we can actually use this

  129. prayer as a way to scaffold this is what

  130. Jesus taught them to pray and so I

  131. believe both the prayer actually praying

  132. through what's often called The Lord's

  133. Prayer is really helpful but also using

  134. this prayer as prompts for what we can

  135. pray so Jesus started with our Father in

  136. heaven and so the language of father is

  137. great because it it it draws us to the

  138. closeness of God the problem with the in

  139. heaven makes us think of someone who's

  140. far away so we can easily be drawn to

  141. think that the start of the prayer is

  142. actually we are praying to someone who

  143. is far away but if you actually look at

  144. the Greek you could translate it like

  145. this because uh Heavens is talking about

  146. atmospheres and you could actually some

  147. Scholars translate it to Our Father who

  148. is in the very air that we breathe now

  149. now we we we don't believe that God is

  150. everything but he is omnipresent and

  151. he's in the very end a that we breathe

  152. so this first step to praying The Lord's

  153. Prayer is an awareness that God is Not

  154. distant he's actually close and even if

  155. we don't feel that he's close that's

  156. actually the reality and we are invited

  157. into a father who's in the very air that

  158. we

  159. breathe

  160. um I went out for dinner the other night

  161. and um the person was asking asking us

  162. when we were married Sarah and I and I

  163. showed um the guy the photo I showed him

  164. this photo here and um he he was

  165. um he was from another culture and

  166. obviously was a culture that um didn't

  167. get the social cues that you don't

  168. go and he just laughed and laughed and

  169. laughed for about five minutes at this

  170. photo like um I think he uh with the

  171. gift of interpretation I think he was

  172. saying w and his age poorly you know was

  173. uh kind of the feeling that I got but

  174. this is SAR and I when we've been

  175. married uh just over a year and this is

  176. us outside Buckingham Palace and so

  177. obviously you can kind of see a little

  178. bit in the background there that the

  179. guards are there guarding the palace and

  180. we went to Buckingham Palace but I can

  181. tell you they didn't let us in and uh

  182. you know what an awesome God we have

  183. that is in the very air that we breathe

  184. that when we come to to prayer there's

  185. actually an awareness that we are close

  186. to God and he is close to us so we start

  187. from a place of connection and realizing

  188. that he is closer than maybe we think he

  189. is Jesus then goes on to teach them

  190. Hallowed be your name and this is an act

  191. of worship you see here's the thing God

  192. is so so close we could easily forget

  193. who he is like he's so intimate his

  194. heart towards us is so loving and so

  195. kind and he brings us in that that Jesus

  196. then taught his disciples that our

  197. posture in coming to this one who is

  198. close to us is actually to come with a

  199. posture of worship that we come

  200. remembering who he is so Step One is a

  201. prayer of awareness and for me that

  202. looks like most of the time I pray uh

  203. starting prayer is God thank you for

  204. your love I'm just pulling in that

  205. awareness of the love of God into my

  206. life and then from that place step two

  207. is that we acknowledge Him in worship

  208. and that our hearts are

  209. drawn to worship him see God is close

  210. but he's also the king of the universe

  211. and so we can uh enjoy his closeness but

  212. we also remember who it is that we are

  213. praying

  214. to Jesus then taught them your kingdom

  215. come your will be done on Earth as it is

  216. in

  217. heaven we would say that that's we're

  218. praying for God's will or we're praying

  219. for intercession and of course what that

  220. tells us is if we are praying something

  221. God's will is not automatically being

  222. outworked in the world he actually

  223. chooses to partner with us and our

  224. prayers to see his will done and see his

  225. kingdom come upon the

  226. earth I think Brian Houston said this if

  227. all your prayers were answered would it

  228. change your world or the world you know

  229. if everything we were praying for was

  230. answered would it just simply be that my

  231. life was improved or would the world be

  232. a different place because we're invited

  233. into this intercession to believe for

  234. God's will that that we would come and

  235. contend for on Earth as it is in heaven

  236. that we would be people of prayer and

  237. man we live in such a materialistic

  238. secular world that we need to be able to

  239. pray that that Veil would be broken and

  240. that the Kingdom of Heaven would be

  241. poured

  242. out Charles finny was a famous

  243. revivalist in the 18 hundreds they say

  244. in some weeks he saw over 50,000 people

  245. come to Christ he would literally go

  246. into towns and uh he would go in some

  247. cases go into factories and the factory

  248. would stop working and people would come

  249. under conviction and people give their

  250. lives to Jesus but you know po post his

  251. his ministry the story of Nash began to

  252. get told and uh Daniel Nash was actually

  253. the prayer supporter of Charles finny

  254. and before Charles finny would go to a

  255. town uh Daniel Nash would go uh two

  256. weeks before him and begin to pray and

  257. in one case uh this lady uh Charles

  258. finny turned up in town and she said hey

  259. I've got some real concerns and and

  260. Charles F said what's that and uh she

  261. said well I I rented that room to your

  262. guys but they haven't come out for food

  263. at all and they hadn't I hadn't seen

  264. them in two weeks I was a bit worried so

  265. I just opened the door and peaked in and

  266. they were lying on the ground wailing

  267. like are they okay and Finny said well

  268. yes they're okay they're just travailing

  269. and praying and so everywhere finny went

  270. Nash proceeded him in prayer asking for

  271. God's kingdom to come such was Nash's

  272. influence in the ministry of finny that

  273. uh once Nash passed away 6 months later

  274. finny stopped traveling because his

  275. prayer partner was gone and he actually

  276. moved and pastored a church somewhere

  277. and went I can no longer do this

  278. itinerant Ministry because the one who

  279. broke up the ground for me is no longer

  280. here and or we may not all be called to

  281. be uh Daniel Nash but all of us can pray

  282. for the Kingdom of Heaven to be released

  283. all of us can pray for situations and

  284. things to turn all of us can intercede

  285. that God's will would be

  286. done give us this day our daily

  287. bread praying for your

  288. needs so once we've interceded we can

  289. then take some time and pray over our

  290. needs and it's interesting because he

  291. says give us this day our daily bread so

  292. part of what we're praying for is maybe

  293. that that we would have actually

  294. received

  295. anyway like you pray for your daily

  296. bread you pray for your provision and

  297. actually your neighbor didn't pray that

  298. prayer but they got it anyway but what

  299. we're doing is yes partly we're praying

  300. for our needs we are there are things

  301. that we are asking God that we need for

  302. but part of the other thing is we're

  303. actually acknowledging that he is the

  304. source of everything so we're actually

  305. bringing ourselves in prayer and

  306. acknowledging I get it looks like that

  307. my employer is my provider and looks

  308. like these things are going on but the

  309. truth is God is actually the ultimate

  310. source of everything he is the one who

  311. provides my needs and so I reorientate

  312. myself to that

  313. reality and at the same time we bring

  314. needs before him where we need to see

  315. breakthrough where we have these needs

  316. and God loves to meet our needs you know

  317. it says my God shall supply all your

  318. needs according to his riches and Glory

  319. I want you to imagine that you were

  320. somewhere and you met a really

  321. successful business person and they uh

  322. turned up in their car and you thought

  323. wow that car is worth hundreds of

  324. thousands of dollars and you knew they

  325. had a mansion and they said to you do

  326. you know what I just really enjoyed

  327. meeting you I've got a gift for you that

  328. I want to give you can you come by my

  329. office and you know so you're pretty

  330. excited um and wondering what kind of

  331. gift you're going to get so you go by

  332. this business person's office and you go

  333. in and you meet them and they give you

  334. an envelope and you're polite enough to

  335. know that you don't open the envelope uh

  336. in the office but you're impatient

  337. enough that as soon as you get to the

  338. car when you can't be seen you rip the

  339. envelope open you rip the envelope open

  340. and you look inside and inside is a $5

  341. note you would kind of be a little bit

  342. disappointed what's happened is that

  343. person has given you something out of

  344. their riches so they've given you $5 out

  345. of their riches what the scripture says

  346. is that God gives meets our needs

  347. according to his riches how rich is God

  348. so he meets our needs according to his

  349. riches and so we can bring our requests

  350. boldly before God without the things

  351. that we need I always remember when we

  352. were

  353. at Faith bible college and we just made

  354. the decision to move to Tura um and

  355. become youth pastors at elim and we're

  356. like wow we need to move all our stuff

  357. up and uh so we we went and got a quote

  358. and the quote was like it was going to

  359. be $4,000 to move our things up and we

  360. we did not have $4,000 we had a very

  361. small multiple of that and we're like

  362. wow what do we do and so I remember um

  363. like giving rebates were just coming up

  364. and we were getting our giv rebat but

  365. because we' both been students we

  366. weren't getting very much giving rebate

  367. and it certainly wasn't going to make a

  368. dent in this

  369. $4,000 and um I remember praying and uh

  370. you know I don't believe that giving is

  371. a way that we manipulate God to get what

  372. we want but in this instance I just felt

  373. challenged hey what are you going to do

  374. with that giving rebate why don't you

  375. give it and I was like okay so we made a

  376. decision we're praying so we made a

  377. decision to give this giving rebate and

  378. we're praying God um we can't afford

  379. this $4,000 and it would be really nice

  380. to have our furniture moved from Christ

  381. Church to toonga and So within 24 hours

  382. we made the decision to give we'd been

  383. praying and asking God to meet our needs

  384. and then all of a sudden someone else on

  385. College was moving from Christ Church to

  386. toer as well they come over to us and

  387. said to us hey we've actually achieved

  388. um we've found a shipping container that

  389. we can self pack it will move up and

  390. it's only going to cost

  391. $2,400 and I was like okay well that's

  392. pretty good but I still don't have

  393. $2,400 and then they're like but you

  394. guys don't have much stuff we don't have

  395. much stuff so we can share a shipping

  396. container and it's going to be $1,200

  397. each and I'm like well that's great I

  398. still don't have $1,200 but you know

  399. it's it's nicer not having $1200 than it

  400. was not having 4,000 like 14 hours ago

  401. and then as best I recall the same day

  402. we get a phone call from someone a

  403. couple who said you know those were the

  404. days when your giving rebate was limited

  405. to a certain amount they said hey no

  406. you're moving from Christ Church to TOA

  407. we want to give you our giving rebates

  408. and it worked out at

  409. $1,200 and so in the space of 24 hours

  410. I'd gone from needing

  411. $4,000 to needing $2400 to needing

  412. $1,200 to having $1,200 gifted to us and

  413. needing nothing and you know we need to

  414. be remembered that God does meet our

  415. needs does he do it in that way every

  416. time no not necessarily but we do need

  417. to have an expectation that God wants to

  418. meet his children's needs and we are to

  419. have a prayer life will we bring our

  420. needs before God yes I know sometimes

  421. we've talked about uh you know bringing

  422. our needs and that that shouldn't be the

  423. entirety of our prayer life and that's

  424. absolutely true our prayer life should

  425. not just be a list but at the same time

  426. we are his children and we are supposed

  427. to come before him with our

  428. needs and even the morning I just wonder

  429. if uh there are people here and you're

  430. like man I I have a need in my life I

  431. know there'll be many many people maybe

  432. there's a financial need maybe it's a

  433. need of healing maybe it's a a need of

  434. restoration I don't know what it is but

  435. even if that's you this morning right

  436. now in this moment I'm just going to

  437. encourage you if that's you why don't

  438. you just stand to your feet where you

  439. are we're going to just say a prayer but

  440. if you've got needs I know there'll be

  441. many many people and I realize it's the

  442. middle of the service like well you're

  443. not meant to do this here but but we're

  444. just going to pause and if you've got a

  445. need in your life why don't you just

  446. stand to your

  447. feet

  448. wow yes Lord you taught us to pray that

  449. you would give us our daily bread so

  450. Lord I I bless each person standing Lord

  451. their faith to put those need into your

  452. hands and Lord I pray Lord that you as

  453. our father would be the provider in the

  454. name of Jesus Lord where Financial

  455. breakthrough is needed Lord we release

  456. financial breakthrough Lord where a a

  457. miracle of health is needed we release

  458. that in the name of Jesus Lord where uh

  459. just uh Clarity to thinking in a way for

  460. what is needed Lord I bless them to know

  461. that God in jesus' Name Lord we commit

  462. these things to you asking that you

  463. would meet our needs as a good father in

  464. jesus' name amen amen

  465. awesome Jesus in goes on to say in

  466. Matthew 6 and forgive us our debts

  467. forgive us our sins

  468. and and uh some of the study I was doing

  469. for for this looking at the Lord's

  470. Prayer again um I actually came across

  471. someone and their theology what they

  472. wrote was that this was an old Covenant

  473. prayer not a New Covenant prayer because

  474. of the work that Christ has done on the

  475. cross we no longer need to confess and

  476. uh you know that that would make us sin

  477. conscious and can I say I totally don't

  478. believe that confession is an awesome

  479. thing it is a gift from God like

  480. sometimes uh confessing our faults uh

  481. you know the the argument against it was

  482. well it just makes us sin conscious I

  483. don't know about you but I already

  484. struggle with being sin

  485. conscious like I'm already living under

  486. that uh from the things that I've done

  487. and so confession is not about me

  488. looking inside myself and seeing how bad

  489. I am it is reminding myself wow I may

  490. have fallen short about how good is

  491. Jesus I may have fallen short but Jesus

  492. wow he is my righteousness forgive me my

  493. debts and you know I I I don't believe

  494. you're saved because you confess every

  495. single sin like if you have to confess

  496. every single sin so that you can go to

  497. heaven we're in a lot of trouble right

  498. I I sort of say it a little bit like

  499. this we don't confess sin so much to be

  500. forgiven we confess sins because we have

  501. been forgiven it's it's reminding us

  502. before the father wow your goodness

  503. covers me it does not make us sin

  504. conscious it actually makes us Grace

  505. conscious and can I encourage you

  506. confession is actually an incredibly

  507. lifegiving thing and when we make it

  508. part of our daily prayer practice it

  509. actually sets us free in all kinds of

  510. ways it allows us to live in that

  511. reality of God's grace it reminds us of

  512. his righteousness and what he has done

  513. for us confession is a powerful

  514. thing he then goes on to

  515. say as we

  516. have forgiven our

  517. debtors interesting in this prayer that

  518. Jesus teaches this is how you should

  519. pray he reminds us that we need to

  520. forgive other

  521. people and when you looked at what the

  522. priority that the New Testament puts on

  523. forgiving others and

  524. unforgiveness when you see how Jesus

  525. talks about it it's not surprising in

  526. that in his moral prayer He is wanting

  527. to uproot anything within us that would

  528. cause us to have unforgiveness to

  529. another

  530. person like he even says that you know

  531. if one of you is presenting a gift at

  532. the altar and remembers someone has

  533. something against you go and put it

  534. right and then bring your

  535. gift you know he's even saying hey

  536. worship actually needs to express

  537. itself in releasing other people from

  538. the bondages that we may behold over

  539. them because the reality is as we walk

  540. through life there are going to be many

  541. people that will hurt us that's true

  542. right right now throughout Tera

  543. throughout the country there are tens of

  544. thousands of Christians that aren't in a

  545. church because they got hurt genuinely

  546. hurt like in a lot of cases genuine

  547. grievance are like I I just can't go

  548. there anymore because of the pain that

  549. has been caused and so it's a huge deal

  550. for us as we navigate life that we are

  551. going to have many many

  552. opportunities to take offense and to not

  553. walk in the Forgiveness that Christ

  554. shows to us

  555. and uh forgiving I realize there'll be

  556. some people here there'll be different

  557. kinds of situations where you know

  558. someone might need to forgive someone

  559. because they shot them with a water

  560. pistol yesterday and embarrassed them

  561. and someone else might have a capital T

  562. trauma in their world where it's

  563. something far more uh heavy that you

  564. feel like an offense that someone has

  565. put on you and you know what I would say

  566. In This Moment is that forgiving others

  567. doesn't mean that what they did was

  568. right and in some cases forgiving others

  569. doesn't even need mean you need to be in

  570. an active relationship with them not

  571. everything means you actually need to

  572. have active relationship in some

  573. instances with what some people have

  574. done it is not safe to be in

  575. relationship with them but forgiving

  576. them means we are going to relinquish

  577. our rights to hold that over them it's

  578. amazing that Jesus puts this in the

  579. prayer like in his model prayer he wants

  580. us to remember that we are to keep quick

  581. accounts I believe it's in the model

  582. prayer because man unforgiveness is

  583. something that grows like when you have

  584. unforgiveness in your life it actually

  585. unfortunately as time goes on it doesn't

  586. get easier it actually just sits there

  587. and it grows like a weed and so the

  588. easier and the quicker you get in the

  589. habit of forgiving the easier is to do

  590. and the longer and the more you stew on

  591. something time does not heal that kind

  592. of wound it actually causes an infection

  593. that grows over time and so Jesus makes

  594. it a standard that for his

  595. followers we would have a prayer

  596. practice before the father where we

  597. would forgive

  598. others and I believe this should be part

  599. of our prayer life uh regularly but

  600. maybe you're here and even as uh I've

  601. been saying that there's a bristle

  602. because you can think of a person or

  603. people where you're

  604. like yeah not

  605. them and maybe this morning the Lord

  606. would actually have freedom for you in

  607. ways that are greater than you would

  608. know you've probably heard it said that

  609. unforgiveness is like drinking poison

  610. and hoping the other person

  611. dies you know actually does something in

  612. my life the unforgiveness actually

  613. doesn't affect them it affects me makes

  614. me bitter and so before our father we

  615. can bring those things and if you want

  616. to close your eyes this morning and

  617. maybe

  618. uh just allow the Holy Spirit to bring

  619. to mind

  620. if there is anyone that you need to

  621. forgive you may be like I don't even

  622. know if I can well it starts just with

  623. that decision in prayer God help me to

  624. forgive God would you help me to forgive

  625. this

  626. person and if that's you this morning

  627. why don't you just between you and God

  628. you can just say a whispered prayer Lord

  629. I choose to

  630. forgive help me to

  631. forgive Lord I pray for each person that

  632. has something heavy on their heart Lord

  633. I pray that there would be a Grace that

  634. we would be able to forgive others in

  635. Jesus name

  636. amen he goes on to say in Matthew 6 and

  637. lead us not into temptation but Deliver

  638. Us from Evil and we would say that this

  639. is safety protection and

  640. deliverance there's a reality that we

  641. are in a spiritual battle I know that um

  642. some Churches and some places see a

  643. demon behind everything I get that but

  644. then the sad thing is some other places

  645. just pretend like there is no enemy and

  646. there is no battle and we do believe

  647. that uh scripture clearly teaches that

  648. as well as being God there is a devil

  649. and that we are to pray for God's safety

  650. protection and deliverance lead us not

  651. into temptation I remember for me one of

  652. the real practical times where this was

  653. so real was I went to Jamaica and I took

  654. a group of 10 to 13 year- old pre-teens

  655. to Jamaica I was one of the leaders on

  656. the team and Jamaica is a rough Place

  657. lots of people get shot in jamaer like

  658. it's got high gun crime so um they

  659. decided that we would go into town and

  660. so we went into town and they're like

  661. we're going to split up into groups and

  662. I was like 19 at the time and I had a

  663. group of like eight 10 to 13 year olds

  664. that I'm um responsible for in the

  665. middle of Jamaica what could possibly go

  666. wrong and so so I remember we're walking

  667. down the street and these guys come up

  668. and they go man and I was like uh you

  669. know and they're built they've got

  670. dreads um and um

  671. shars um and I said hey man and they

  672. uh they said we're really hungry you

  673. know uh can you give us some

  674. money and I said oh no I can't give you

  675. money but I do have uh uh uh we were

  676. taking American Bree so I said you know

  677. we got a peanut butter and jelly

  678. sandwich you can have that if you like

  679. peanut butter and jam gross happy to

  680. give it away like you know you can take

  681. this American food and they said oh no

  682. we don't want your food we want some

  683. money and I was like oh sorry I can't

  684. really give you any money and then the

  685. guy said to me look at look at me and I

  686. I looked at him he said we are the kind

  687. of people who have to rob people for a

  688. living

  689. you don't want us to Rob have to rob

  690. people so you should give us some money

  691. so that we don't have to rob people now

  692. sometimes the elevator doesn't always go

  693. to the top floor but I think what he was

  694. saying was if you don't give me some

  695. money I'm going to rob

  696. you there was sort of a subtle

  697. undertone and so I remember just saying

  698. oh hey sorry I can't give you any money

  699. um you're welcome to a sandwich he said

  700. I don't want your sandwich and so I'm

  701. like okay guys let's go and so we begin

  702. to walk walk and you know I'm sure you

  703. can imagine I'm walking away cool calm

  704. and clicked you know I'm

  705. like and uh these guys begin to follow

  706. us and they follow us for a block and

  707. I'm like um freaking out and the kids

  708. are going they're still following us I'm

  709. going shut up look ahead let's

  710. go follow us for two blocks you know and

  711. uh they dreadlock swaying in the wind

  712. and I'm like oh Jesus

  713. Jesus sh

  714. Bashi and I I'm just praying your safety

  715. your protection your deliverance over me

  716. and these kids and I'm you know having

  717. to rebuke the enemy as I'm seeing

  718. headlines Flash before my eyes of

  719. American pre-teens murdered in Jamaica

  720. over a peanut butter and jelly sandwich

  721. you know and so man after about four

  722. blocks one of the kids is like they

  723. stopped following us and then I was just

  724. like oh thank you Jesus thank you like

  725. man you don't know the Liv of anxiety as

  726. a 19-year-old when you have a

  727. responsibility for pre-teens and you're

  728. like man I don't know if this is safe

  729. and in that moment crying out to Jesus

  730. made such a difference but can I tell

  731. you we may not be in a situation like

  732. that every day but we are actually in a

  733. battle we're in a spiritual battle that

  734. we need to be aware of there is a

  735. reality to the fact that there's forces

  736. in this world of evil that do not want

  737. the kingdom of God to advance that do

  738. not want the blood of Jesus applied to

  739. people's lives that do want to Rob kill

  740. and destroy and so Jesus teaches us to

  741. pray lead us not into temptation but

  742. Deliver Us from Evil that we would pray

  743. protection over ourselves and our

  744. families and it is an important thing to

  745. do so you might struggle in your prayer

  746. life and be like man I don't know quite

  747. um how to

  748. pray well those seven

  749. steps there you know literally you might

  750. if you're struggling to pray for 10

  751. minutes you might decide that you're

  752. going to sit an alarm that goes for one

  753. minute and for one minute you start

  754. praying God make me aware of your

  755. presence thank you that you're close God

  756. thank you that you're in the air that I

  757. breathe

  758. and after a minute you go to worship and

  759. you begin to start thanking Jesus for

  760. how good he is start beginning to praise

  761. him and you know if you're like uh many

  762. of us you know all of a sudden you'll

  763. find yourself thinking about tacos and

  764. then you're like no not tacos back to

  765. Jesus that's okay after two you know the

  766. alarm goes and you can go on to praying

  767. for God's will interceding for his

  768. kingdom to come and you can take you

  769. know a minute

  770. on each of those and you prayed for

  771. seven

  772. minutes and then maybe after a week of

  773. doing that you decide set the timer for

  774. two minutes and you begin to pray for 2

  775. minutes and then you know a week later

  776. you sit the alarm for 3 minutes and

  777. before you know it you're praying for 20

  778. minutes every day and and covering these

  779. things that Jesus taught were

  780. foundational to being his followers

  781. the Lord is

  782. wanting us to sense his invitation into

  783. a fresh Grace of prayer not a

  784. condemnation but this invitation of

  785. Heaven his mercies a new Every

  786. Morning in AA uh when they're dealing

  787. with people with a addiction it's

  788. interesting because they say you know if

  789. they've got someone who's been sober for

  790. 40 years and someone who's been sober

  791. for a week and they ask who's been sober

  792. longest the answer is whoever got up

  793. first that

  794. day because it's actually a daily

  795. invitation to overcome addiction and

  796. actually it does not matter if you've

  797. prayed every day for 30 years and then

  798. get into a season and just find I'm not

  799. praying so regularly now hey there's no

  800. condemnation but the invitation is into

  801. a fresh

  802. day and maybe you're like man I haven't

  803. been praying and and and and I've never

  804. had prayer Rhythm the beauty is that

  805. God's mercies are new every morning that

  806. that that your prayer connection he

  807. gives you daily bread in the place of

  808. prayer and the beauty of that is that

  809. all of us can have a fresh start each

  810. day one day at a

  811. time to receive his

  812. grace and we are going to close the

  813. service soon by praying for some people

  814. but just before we do that we always

  815. like to give the opportunity maybe

  816. you're here and you've never been

  817. connected to Jesus or you're far from

  818. him right now uh if you are in this

  819. place and you're like I just know my

  820. life is not connected to Jesus

  821. then we would love to lead you in a

  822. prayer that would help you reconnect if

  823. you're like man I know I need to give my

  824. life a fresh to Jesus so I'm just going

  825. to ask everyone to close their eyes and

  826. bow their heads

  827. and if that's you this morning and

  828. you're like either I'm far from God or

  829. I've never known him and I I I want to

  830. know Jesus want to give my life to him

  831. then I'm just going to ask you uh well

  832. no one apart from me is looking around

  833. if that's you this morning you I want

  834. want to be included in that prayer then

  835. I'm just going to ask you to raise your

  836. hand

  837. now awesome I see that

  838. hand there anyone

  839. else

  840. awesome and I'm just going to pray a

  841. prayer and you know if you um raiseed

  842. your hand you can say that prayer in

  843. your heart just asking Jesus to come

  844. close to you and giving your life a

  845. fresh to him Jesus I come to you today

  846. and I give my life aresh to

  847. you would you forgive me of the things

  848. that I've done wrong and would you give

  849. me a brand new

  850. start as your son or

  851. daughter Holy Spirit I ask you to come

  852. into my life and teach me to be more

  853. like

  854. Jesus in the mighty name of Jesus amen

  855. amen awesome and hey if you um raised

  856. your hand we' really encourage you to

  857. come forward at the end and we'd love to

  858. um just be able to help you on your

  859. journey with Jesus but just as uh D and

  860. the worship team come what we're going

  861. to do is we're going to finish with a

  862. final

  863. song but uh I do just want to say one

  864. more thing you know we talked about um

  865. protection safety and deliverance and

  866. praying that over us and this is really

  867. important I I I just felt this week for

  868. some of us there's actually been we've

  869. had that experience of darkness and

  870. actually maybe things coming against us

  871. maybe it's been nightmares or or or or

  872. migraine headaches that just don't seem

  873. like they're natural and cause and as I

  874. said we don't believe that everything's

  875. a demon but we do believe there are

  876. demonic forces that do try and have

  877. influence over for us and that part of

  878. what Jesus was teaching us is that we

  879. actually have

  880. authority and so this morning as we

  881. finish with a final song I want to

  882. invite those who have maybe had some

  883. form of just feel like there's some form

  884. of experience where maybe something that

  885. you no longer want maybe it's something

  886. that you're like man I don't know if

  887. this is spiritual we'd love to pray for

  888. you this morning can I say this is a

  889. safe place

  890. it's not uh this is in no way to

  891. embarrass anyone or to do anything else

  892. it's to actually set people free but the

  893. reality is for many of us as we go

  894. through this life sometimes it's not

  895. even anything we've done there can be

  896. other things that are done to us that

  897. then actually cause a a spiritual battle

  898. to happen and this morning we would love

  899. to pray for some people just to believe

  900. that the Holy Spirit and the power of

  901. Jesus wants to set you free

  902. nothing to be afraid of and it's nothing

  903. to run away from it's actually something

  904. to run to because Jesus is the prince of

  905. peace and he wants us to live in his

  906. Peace So the team are about to lead us

  907. in a song and if that's you this morning

  908. what I'd really encourage you to do is

  909. just come to the front and um there's a

  910. team of people we'd love to pray with

  911. you just to believe that God would um

  912. touch you and set you free you know it

  913. might be

  914. a pain in your body that just doesn't

  915. feel like it's yours and you don't know

  916. where it's from it might be a particular

  917. lie that you just can't get over that

  918. just continually recares it might be a

  919. memory that just comes back it might be

  920. a form of anxiety and we don't believe

  921. all anxiety is inspired by demonic

  922. thoughts but sometimes it can be it

  923. might be an anxiety that's so crippling

  924. that you're like man I would just love

  925. prayer to be free from this this

  926. morning so if that's you this is a safe

  927. place and sometimes on the other side of

  928. the courage of stepping out there is a

  929. whole lot of freedom and I believe even

  930. as I've been speaking about this there

  931. are some people who uh there's something

  932. in your world and you thought that was

  933. just something natural maybe even as

  934. I've been speaking you're like wow I

  935. think it might be spiritual well we

  936. would love to pray for you this morning

  937. and set you free so Jesus thank you that

  938. you are the Prince of Peace

  939. thank you that you rule and Reign and

  940. Lord this morning as people have the

  941. courage to respond thank you that you're

  942. going to meet us Lord thank you that

  943. freedom is found in you

  944. alone so just as a team lead us in this

  945. song I'm going to ask you to to come and

  946. then um once the song finishes if you're

  947. not receiving Ministry um the service

  948. will be over and you can head out to the

  949. street and we'll just continue to pray

  950. for those who have been responded

  951. but I do just want to encourage you I

  952. sense there might be a few that are

  953. thinking oh yeah maybe but I don't want

  954. to can I encourage you there's no shame

  955. there actually freedom
