  1. huge welcome my name is Aaron and a

  2. special welcome to my friend Mukb who is

  3. uh visiting us it's amazing to have you

  4. here this morning so thank you so much

  5. for coming Mukbull and uh you might have

  6. heard the story about a family that were

  7. having a vacation in the Holy Land and

  8. uh it was their extended family and

  9. while they were there the mother-in-law

  10. passed away and so they uh said to him

  11. uh they came to the son-in-law and they

  12. said you've got two options they said

  13. "We can either do the funeral here in

  14. the Holy Land and that will cost you

  15. $250 or we can take the body and send it

  16. back to the United States but that will

  17. cost over

  18. $10,000." And he said "You know I'll

  19. take the $10,000 option please." They

  20. said "No one's ever taken that option

  21. before why are you taking the $10,000

  22. option?" He said "Well 2,000 years ago a

  23. man died here and he came back to life

  24. i'm not taking any chances and uh to my

  25. mother-in-law if you're watching this I

  26. love you

  27. um hey it's uh amazing to be able to

  28. share with you on resurrection Sunday

  29. and in John chapter 20 in the scriptures

    John 20 chapter mention

  30. we see the story of the resurrection and

  31. it says "Now on the first day of the

  32. week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb

  33. early while it was still dark and saw

  34. that the stone had been taken away from

  35. the tomb she ran and went to Simon Peter

  36. and the other disciple the one whom

  37. Jesus loved and said to them "They have

  38. taken the Lord out of the tomb and we do

  39. not know where they have laid them laid

  40. him." So Peter went out with the other

  41. disciple and they were going toward the

  42. tomb both of them were running together

  43. but the other disciple outran Peter and

  44. reached the tomb

  45. first stopping to look he saw the linen

  46. cloths lying but he did not go in then

  47. Peter came following him and went to the

  48. tomb he saw the linen cloths lying there

  49. and the facecloth which had been on

  50. Jesus' head not lying with the linen

  51. cloths but folded up in a place by

  52. itself then the other disciple who had

  53. reached the tomb first also went in and

  54. he saw and believed for as yet they did

  55. not understand the scriptures that he

  56. must rise from the dead then the

  57. disciples went back to their home but

  58. Mary stood weeping outside the tomb and

  59. as she wept she stood to look into the

  60. tomb and saw two angels in white sitting

  61. there where the body of Jesus had lain

  62. one at the head and one at the feet they

  63. said to her "Woman why are you weeping?"

  64. She said "They have taken away my Lord

  65. and I do not know where they have laid

  66. him." Having said this she turned around

  67. and Jesus was standing there but she did

  68. not know it was Jesus jesus said to

  69. her,"Woman why are you weeping whom are

  70. you seeking?" She supposed him to be the

  71. gardener she said to him "Sir if you've

  72. carried him away tell me where you have

  73. laid him and I will take him away." And

  74. Jesus said to her "Mary." She turned and

  75. said in Aramaic "Robini," which means

  76. teacher jesus said to her "Do not cling

  77. to me for I've not yet ascended to the

  78. Father but go to my brothers and say I

  79. am ascending to my father and your

  80. father to my God and your God." Mary

  81. Magdalene went and announced to the

  82. disciples I have seen the Lord and that

  83. he had said these things to her

  84. one of the interesting things about the

  85. Bible is it doesn't just ring true about

  86. God but it also tells us so much about

  87. human nature like the Bible is the

  88. inspired word of God but it actually

  89. wasn't written by God it was written by

  90. people and you can tell that it tells us

  91. something of human nature when you

  92. realize the only gospel that says which

  93. disciple arrived at the tomb first is

  94. the gospel of John and John was the

  95. other disciple who got there first so he

  96. also refers to himself as the one who

  97. Jesus loved and I just wonder like he's

  98. he's he's sitting down to write the

  99. Bible the the Gospel of John that's

  100. going to be two for 2,000 years spoken

  101. of and I think he says "Jesus if you

  102. really loved me could I just add in the

  103. bit that I actually beat Peter there?"

  104. And then he actually reiterates it a

  105. second time right like he's like "Hey um

  106. and the one who arrived first." I mean

  107. it it's so male isn't it like

  108. everything's a competition even going to

  109. the tomb becomes a competition and then

  110. he's like "Thank you Lord for the grace

  111. that I can ascribe this for all

  112. eternity." If you're visiting or new

  113. here this morning and uh maybe even this

  114. church thing is new to you we do believe

  115. a crazy thing we believe that Jesus

  116. Christ of Nazareth actually died and was

  117. placed in a tomb and then he rose from

  118. the dead and and I'm aware when I say

  119. that that is an outlandish claim like I

  120. get it like that's not normal thing to

  121. believe you know if you go out and and

  122. ask most people do you believe people

  123. rise from the dead most people will say

  124. to you "No no I don't believe that." But

  125. not only do we believe it but we

  126. actually believe that's the one of the

  127. most important things that we believe

  128. like in the New Testament Paul wrote a

  129. letter and he said "If Christ did not

  130. rise from the dead our preaching is in

  131. vain and your faith is futile." If

  132. Christ didn't rise all of Christianity

  133. that's been going for 2,000 years falls

  134. flat on its face based on the whether

  135. Jesus rose from the dead or not and in

  136. just a moment the team are going to put

  137. on a video and this is actually an

  138. atheist talking about the resurrection

  139. of Christ and his name is Alex Okconor

  140. in fairness to him he does go on to talk

  141. after this what what his opinion is but

  142. we're just going to watch a little clip

  143. of that now so can we have that video up

  144. please guys

  145. how do we explain the fact that this man

  146. gets crucified by the Romans and then

  147. people claim to see him after he died

  148. and were willing to be put to death for

  149. that belief okay maybe he didn't die

  150. unlikely as they say the Romans knew how

  151. to kill people and supposedly you know

  152. they check okay so likelihood is that he

  153. was actually crucified and then a few

  154. days later people are claiming to see

  155. him maybe they're lying but then you

  156. don't tend to go to death for something

  157. you know to be a lie you're willing to

  158. be put to death for things that you

  159. think are true that are false but very

  160. rarely are people willing to die for

  161. beliefs that they don't actually believe

  162. themselves that doesn't really happen so

  163. they probably weren't lying as maybe

  164. they were maybe they were mistaken

  165. imagine spending every single day with

  166. this person living with this person

  167. eating with this

  168. person and then you've only seen them a

  169. few days ago and somehow imagine

  170. somebody managed to convince you that

  171. they were me even if I had a twin

  172. brother they probably wouldn't be able

  173. to convince you that that it was me or

  174. maybe they were hallucinating in

  175. groups the one of the earliest

  176. uh gospel New Testament sources is the

  177. is the the letters of Paul the earliest

  178. And in one of those letters Paul refers

  179. to Jesus having appeared to 500 people

  180. at once and in some of the gospels you

  181. get at least some group appearances at

  182. least more than one person and sometimes

  183. you know groups of disciple uh the the

  184. 12 all seeing Jesus all at once you

  185. don't get group hallucinations like that

  186. and so it doesn't seem like they were

  187. they were they were mistaken either and

  188. so if they're not mistaken they're not

  189. making it up what explains the fact that

  190. these people claim to see him after he

  191. had died

  192. so one of the uh defenses for why uh you

  193. know people believe in Christianity and

  194. one of the rational defenses that they

  195. use is that very argument that the

  196. historical fact of the resurrection and

  197. that you had multiple people willing to

  198. die for the fact that they believed I'd

  199. seen a risen Christ is an historical

  200. fact for the resurrection but I believe

  201. in the historical fact of the

  202. resurrection believe me if you're in my

  203. job and you begin to say "I'm not sure

  204. if I believe that it was a historical

  205. fact i'll be at Winds on uh Tuesday

  206. looking for a new job." I do believe it

  207. is an historical fact but this morning

  208. the reality of the

  209. resurrection is far more important than

  210. it just being an historical fact even

  211. though that is true

  212. i uh was listening to Peter Roland's and

  213. uh he's a philosopher and uh I wouldn't

  214. necessarily take a whole lot of theology

  215. from him but he thinks a little bit

  216. different and often makes Christians

  217. uncomfortable myself included um so he

  218. went and he was lecturing at this place

  219. and he was lecturing at this place and

  220. the people began to get a little bit

  221. concerned about what his beliefs were

  222. and as I've already said if you are an

  223. Orthodox Christian if you believe Jesus

  224. uh a huge part of it is believing in the

  225. resurrection because the New Testament

  226. says "Hey if Jesus wasn't raised from

  227. the dead then we are still dead in our

  228. sins and our faith is useless." So he's

  229. sharing and he's making these Christians

  230. uncomfortable and this man puts up his

  231. hand at question time and says "Hey

  232. you've been talking a lot about Jesus

  233. but you haven't really mentioned the

  234. resurrection do you deny the

  235. resurrection of

  236. Christ?" And Peter Roland's pauses for a

  237. moment and he says "Yes I deny the

  238. resurrection of Christ." And in that

  239. moment the oxygen gets sucked out of the

  240. room and the event organizers begin to

  241. think how do we get this man off stage

  242. he said "In fact everyone who knows me

  243. knows that I deny the resurrection."

  244. And again he pauses and there is this

  245. deep uncomfortable silence in the room

  246. and he says every time I walk past a

  247. hurting person and do not stop to show

  248. the love of Jesus i deny the

  249. resurrection every time I am selfish and

  250. try and live life my way i deny the

  251. resurrection every time I do things that

  252. hurt other people I deny the

  253. resurrection and then he said "But on a

  254. very few occasions I affirm the

  255. resurrection when I step in in love to

  256. someone else to meet their needs I

  257. affirm the

  258. resurrection." Because the thing about

  259. the resurrection is this it is not just

  260. that it was a historical fact that

  261. happened it was actually a historical

  262. fact that happened and became an

  263. invitation to you and me that we could

  264. enter into resurrection life so it was

  265. not just a something that happened it's

  266. actually something that happens not only

  267. did Jesus get risen from the dead but

  268. because he got risen from the dead we

  269. are all given an invitation to receive

  270. resurrection life

  271. in Romans 8:11 it says "If the spirit of

    Romans 8:11

  272. him who raised Jesus from the dead

  273. dwells in

  274. you he will also give life to your

  275. mortal bodies through his spirit who

  276. dwells in you

  277. if the spirit of him who raised Jesus

  278. from the dead you see what happened to

  279. Jesus was he came fully God fully man

  280. died upon the cross and actually his

  281. resurrection was dependent on the Holy

  282. Spirit it tells us that the spirit

  283. raised Jesus from the dead and then what

  284. it tells us is that same spirit that

  285. rose Jesus from the dead if we accept it

  286. it will live in us he will live in us

  287. through his spirit that's a pretty

  288. amazing concept isn't it

  289. if the spirit of him who raised Jesus

  290. from the dead dwells in you it does kind

  291. of beg a question to ask what does it

  292. mean for the spirit to dwell in us and

  293. how does the spirit who rose Jesus from

  294. the dead dwell in us and so we look

  295. again to the life of Jesus and we see

  296. that on Good Friday Jesus died and and

  297. Easter Sunday he was risen from the dead

  298. through the spirit and it's actually the

  299. same path for us where we choose to die

  300. to

  301. ourselves we choose that ourselves would

  302. die uh to the things of this world that

  303. we would give our lives to Jesus and in

  304. doing so that he would give his life his

  305. resurrection life to us you see there

  306. are some that try and say to follow

  307. Christ you know oh well just um you can

  308. just have Jesus and and you don't really

  309. have to give up everything and that's

  310. actually not

  311. true to follow Jesus you actually have

  312. to give your life up as he did that's

  313. the one we're following the one who gave

  314. his life

  315. up someone said "To follow Jesus will

  316. cost you

  317. everything and at that price it is an

  318. incredible

  319. bargain." To follow Jesus will cost you

  320. everything and at that price it is an

  321. incredible bargain why because of the

  322. resurrection life that

  323. comes through

  324. Jesus there's a story of a

  325. donkey that uh comes in from its day it

  326. comes back into the stable and it says

  327. "Um mom you always told me I was a

  328. special little

  329. donkey." And I always thought you just

  330. said that cuz you were my mom you know

  331. and you know if you've got a face that

  332. only a mother can love you'd appreciate

  333. that right like that sometimes moms say

  334. things you know so says to this donkey

  335. this donkey says "You know I thought you

  336. were just saying that because you were

  337. my

  338. mom but it was amazing Mom i believe it

  339. now cuz today I went out into the street

  340. and as I walked down the street these

  341. people began to wave

  342. palms and they began to yell "Hosana!"

  343. And they began to yell "Here comes the

  344. King." And they began to praise me and

  345. oh I was so amazing oh mom today I

  346. realized how special I really

  347. was and the mom said "Well it's true you

  348. are a special

  349. donkey but they weren't doing that for

  350. you they were doing it for Jesus who was

  351. riding on

  352. you and us as ordinary frail people get

  353. this

  354. invitation to be in union and one with

  355. Jesus we get this invitation you know me

  356. standing up here

  357. speaking I I feel like I'm just a beggar

  358. maybe telling some other beggars where I

  359. found some

  360. bread like on my best day I'm just a

  361. donkey that simply gets to host Jesus in

  362. my life that got to experience

  363. resurrection power in my life that was

  364. not just a concept the re the

  365. resurrection was not just something that

  366. happened 2,000 years ago but for me as a

  367. 13-year-old broken lost just so messed

  368. up grieving the death of my father

  369. struggling with so many things and God

  370. came and put his resurrection life in me

  371. and everything in my life changed

  372. because of that reality because of the

  373. invitation to resurrection life very

  374. good see resurrection isn't just an

  375. historical fact it is a present day

  376. reality and I realize we will have some

  377. people here that are um not used to

  378. being in church and uh you know I don't

  379. want this next part to freak you out but

  380. we believe resurrection life happens and

  381. Jesus is here and so right now if you're

  382. here and you uh have pain in your body

  383. if there's um active pain maybe a sports

  384. injury or or an accident why don't you

  385. just raise your hand if you've got

  386. active pain in your body particularly if

  387. it hurts now if you're like "Man I am in

  388. pain right now." Why don't you just

  389. raise your hand up high if you're in

  390. pain and

  391. uh if you're uh a believer in Jesus and

  392. you're next to someone who's got their

  393. hand raised why don't you just place a

  394. hand on them don't start praying or just

  395. place a hand on

  396. them and what we're going to do right

  397. now is together we're just going to ask

  398. the resurrection power of Jesus to flow

  399. into these bodies

  400. why don't you just say kingdom of God

  401. come will of God be

  402. done resurrection power of Christ come

  403. into this

  404. body and pain leave in Jesus'

  405. name and if you have just been prayed

  406. for sometimes what we find is actually

  407. someone uh so used to focusing on the

  408. pain so just stop focusing on the pain

  409. and just have a moment and then just try

  410. it out and sometimes people actually um

  411. are like "Wow I've got pain in my

  412. shoulder." And then that actually as

  413. they try to do something they wouldn't

  414. normally be able to do they actually

  415. feel the very healing presence of Jesus

  416. and realize they're painfree so if

  417. that's you this morning if you just had

  418. someone lay hands on you if you why

  419. don't you can you just try out what you

  420. need to do if you need to stand that's

  421. okay if you need to just try something

  422. but sometimes it's in the uh moving of

  423. something that we actually receive the

  424. healing and uh you know if someone uh

  425. feels like they've had a significant

  426. change in their body why don't you just

  427. raise your hands maddie that's awesome

  428. another one down

  429. there anyone else just as they're trying

  430. it out anyone in the

  431. messy wow awesome another one thank you

  432. Jesus paul

  433. wow and so we believe

  434. Jesus brings

  435. resurrection

  436. life all of us are called to live in

  437. resurrection life and probably for some

  438. of us if you are a follower of Jesus in

  439. this place when I say we are called to

  440. live in resurrection life probably for a

  441. lot of us we actually begin to feel a

  442. little bit guilty because we kind of go

  443. "Okay I'm supposed to live in

  444. resurrection life but I realize I said a

  445. four-letter word this week that wasn't

  446. gosh and maybe more than one." And uh

  447. you know I did this I did that I did the

  448. other like I was supposed to be living

  449. in resurrection life and my life doesn't

  450. seem to measure up with resurrection

  451. life would there be anyone honest that

  452. goes back over there last week and says

  453. "Man I think my week doesn't quite add

  454. up with resurrection life." Wow I love

  455. those hands all the others are still in

  456. deception and lying so that's okay

  457. that's okay um we we we you can you can

  458. encounter resurrection life and stop

  459. lying that's that's fine

  460. um you know so often we hear something

  461. like this and we say "Man it's so devoid

  462. from my reality." Like "This isn't

  463. actually the reality of my life." And

  464. you know sometimes I look and I think

  465. "Man if we had the reality of

  466. resurrection life how different would

  467. our city be?" Like even if just the

  468. people in this room who follow Jesus if

  469. we really walked in resurrection life

  470. what would it be like and see the

  471. problem as we begin to look internally

  472. and do an inventory is we're looking to

  473. the wrong place you see we begin to do

  474. an inventory and we go "Wow I didn't

  475. measure up i guess this resurrection

  476. life is just a theory." And every now

  477. and again there's an amazing story that

  478. happens and I'm reminded yes someone got

  479. healed or this happened but I don't seem

  480. to live in the fullness of resurrection

  481. life but Ephesians 2 says "For by grace

  482. have you been saved through faith and

  483. that not of your own it is the gift of

  484. God not of works so that no one can

  485. boast." So we come to Christ through

  486. grace but here's what it says next for

  487. we are his

  488. workmanship created in Christ Jesus for

  489. good works which God prepared beforehand

  490. that we should walk in them it's not an

  491. accident that this starts by talking

  492. about grace and what you did not

  493. earn do you know every person here when

  494. they accepted Jesus was created aresh in

  495. Christ they were given new life and then

  496. there were actually good works that God

  497. had in advance for you to

  498. do but

  499. actually so often the only thing

  500. stopping us is that we expect it to come

  501. from our sense of goodness we expect it

  502. to come from us and we forget that Good

  503. Friday happened and Jesus died and so

  504. actually all we have to do is being

  505. really good at being dead to

  506. ourselves all we actually have to do is

  507. remind ourselves wow there is nothing

  508. good in me but there's everything good

  509. in Jesus and when we remain in that

  510. place we actually become hidden with

  511. Christ and resurrection life begins to

  512. flow through our bodies but so often we

  513. are looking at the body in the tomb uh

  514. uh symbolically we're looking at the old

  515. us expecting to see something good and

  516. Jesus is saying the goodness is going to

  517. flow when you actually remain in me all

  518. you actually need to do is remain in me

  519. oh I was so moved this morning during

  520. worship just that revelation um I was

  521. just yelling out "God I am in you and

  522. you are in

  523. me." Wow thank you Jesus for that thank

  524. you for your resurrection power that

  525. flows to me by grace

  526. and so this morning we are going to

  527. close by saying two prayers and the

  528. first prayer that I'm going to pray is

  529. if you are here this morning and uh you

  530. have never uh given your life to Jesus

  531. you've never come to him and asked for

  532. that resurrection life then this morning

  533. we want to give you an opportunity or

  534. maybe you did that once a long time ago

  535. and you're no longer walking with God i

  536. I don't mean that you've had a bad week

  537. i mean if you're no longer walking with

  538. God and you're like "Man I need to

  539. reconnect with God." Then this morning I

  540. want to say a prayer and I would love to

  541. include you in that prayer so if

  542. everyone could just close their eyes and

  543. if you're here this morning and you're

  544. in a place where you're like "Hey I

  545. realize I want to give my life to

  546. Jesus i want to experience resurrection

  547. life."

  548. Then this morning I'm going to ask you

  549. to do something brave and just raise

  550. your hand and say "Hey Aaron would you

  551. include me in that prayer?" Maybe you've

  552. walked far from God and you're like "Man

  553. I know I need to come back to Jesus."

  554. And so with every eye closed just as I

  555. look around if you're like "That's me

  556. this morning i want to say yes to Jesus

  557. i need to give my life back to

  558. him." I want to be included in that

  559. prayer then I'm just going to ask you to

  560. pop your hand up now

  561. i see that hand god bless i see that

  562. hand god

  563. bless i see that hand god bless

  564. you and if you raised your hand or you

  565. feel like you should have I'm just going

  566. to say a prayer now and you can just

  567. pray this um yourself

  568. and uh this isn't the one this is the

  569. start of something it's not the end of

  570. something this isn't the whole thing

  571. it's just the start of something and

  572. even um as you pray this prayer I just

  573. uh encourage you to say it from your

  574. heart and then maybe at the end of the

  575. service it would be amazing if you came

  576. forward and we'd love to connect with

  577. you and help you on your journey but if

  578. you raised your hand or right now you're

  579. like "Oh I I shut off." Then this

  580. morning just as I pray this you can pray

  581. these words under your breath and just

  582. uh invite Jesus into your

  583. life jesus I come to you this

  584. morning i may not know everything but I

  585. come to you in faith and believe that

  586. you died for my sin so I could

  587. experience your

  588. life and God this

  589. morning I give up doing life my way i

  590. turn and choose to do life your

  591. way lord would you let resurrection life

  592. flow into my body and into my life help

  593. me to follow you in Jesus' name amen

  594. amen can we just give a round of

  595. applause for those who prayed that

  596. prayer and the second group of people

  597. which is probably most of us is those of

  598. us who have got caught in a

  599. cycle of looking at ourselves instead of

  600. looking at the resurrected one of

  601. looking at ourselves instead of looking

  602. to him and if that's you this morning

  603. we're not going to come out the front

  604. but if that's you just uh there's only

  605. going to be a moment for this but right

  606. now if you want to stand where you are

  607. if you're like man I know I've been in a

  608. place where I get caught looking at

  609. myself and man I want to look at the

  610. resurrected one just uh just going to

  611. count down from five if you're going to

  612. stand five four three two one awesome

  613. and uh this

  614. morning I realize that this is really

  615. hard to do because we're in seats that

  616. are right next to each other but just as

  617. you can what I want you to do is uh

  618. symbolize stepping backwards in just a

  619. moment and so you're just going to at

  620. best you can it'll be a shuffle for most

  621. of us but we're just going to step

  622. back and it's like we're stepping back

  623. into the fullness of who Christ is it's

  624. that reminder that I'm stepping into the

  625. reality of the one who gave his life for

  626. me i'm stepping into his death burial

  627. and resurrection so this morning why

  628. don't you just uh do that this morning

  629. as a sign you can just shuffle back whoa

  630. Lord and even as we do that Lord we just

  631. place our lives in your hands again lord

  632. we step back into that reality of the

  633. risen Christ

  634. wow you are hidden in Christ and Christ

  635. is in

  636. you and then what I want to invite you

  637. to simply do now is take a small step

  638. forward and that's the reality of you

  639. stepping forward from this

  640. moment aware that you are hidden in

  641. Christ with resurrection power flowing

  642. through you according to the glory of

  643. God lord I bless each person here lord I

  644. bless them to know that they are deeply

  645. deeply loved by you lord as we step

  646. forward Lord may we step out with the

  647. realization of resurrection life flowing

  648. through us lord may our eyes be on the

  649. reality that you are in us and we are in

  650. you and Lord may we walk forth that way

  651. into the day weeks months and years

  652. ahead lord to see your kingdom come your

  653. will be done in the mighty name of Jesus

  654. amen amen awesome
