  1. Jess horning. I'm Jess. I'm part of the

  2. team here at Tanga Elum Church. And it

  3. is my privilege and honor to be sharing

  4. with you this morning. And I'm really

  5. excited for what God is going to do in

  6. this place. And I'm believing for what

  7. he is going to do in your hearts as

  8. well. So, if you haven't been following

  9. along with us here at church, we've

  10. started a series on the wilderness,

  11. which is all about the life of Jesus as

  12. he is led by the spirit into the

  13. wilderness, as he fasts for 40 days, and

  14. as he is tempted by the enemy. And this

  15. passage of scripture can be found in

  16. Luke 4:es 1-13. And pastor Aaron

  17. preached a great message a couple weeks

  18. ago, the first message in our series,

  19. and it was all about the wilderness

  20. being a place where formation happens.

  21. And then last week, his sermon was about

  22. repentance and confession. How these

  23. aren't simply a religious act, but a

  24. gift, an invitation into God's presence

  25. and his grace. And I can't do justice to

  26. these two sermons in 10 seconds because

  27. they were really that good. And so, can

  28. I encourage you after the service if you

  29. haven't heard them to go back and listen

  30. to them? I believe it will bless you.

  31. But today, we're going to continue in

  32. our series about the wilderness, picking

  33. up in verses 3 to 4. But for a bit of

  34. context, we're just going to read from

  35. Luke 4:E1.

  36. And it says, "Jesus, full of the spirit,

  37. left the Jordan and was led by the

  38. spirit into the wilderness where for 40

  39. days he was tempted by the devil. He ate

  40. nothing during those days and at the end

  41. of them he was hungry."

  42. Then in verse three, it says, "The devil

  43. said to him, if you are the son of God,

  44. tell this stone to become bread." Jesus

  45. answered, "It is written, man shall not

  46. live by bread alone." And so that is the

  47. passage of scripture that we are going

  48. to be looking at this morning. And it's

  49. funny because as I was writing this

  50. message, I um I sat down to write this

  51. one Saturday morning, and I was in the

  52. midst of a 24-hour fast, and my flatmate

  53. had just baked a fresh loaf of

  54. sourdough. And let me tell you, it

  55. looked and smelled amazing. Absolutely

  56. delicious. And in my opinion, there's

  57. nothing quite like the smell of freshly

  58. baked bread. I don't know if anyone has

  59. smelt that smell before, but I just

  60. think it's the best thing in the world.

  61. And apparently, now Google says this,

  62. and Google's always right, but

  63. apparently uh if you are trying to sell

  64. a house, what you should do is bake a

  65. loaf of bread and let it do its thing,

  66. right? Because apparently the bread, the

  67. smell of the bread baking entices buyers

  68. by creating a warm, inviting, and

  69. nostalgic atmosphere that makes buyers,

  70. potential buyers, feel like they could

  71. live in that place. I've never owned a

  72. home, so uh never sold one either. And

  73. so the theory is yet to be tested. But

  74. uh if you are trying to sell a home,

  75. give it a go. Let me know what your

  76. thoughts are. But this Saturday morning,

  77. I was sitting down writing this message.

  78. And as the fresh smell of sourdough

  79. wafted through the air, tantalizing my t

  80. senses and making my stomach physically

  81. growl at me, the temptation to have even

  82. just one slice was very real.

  83. I can't even imagine how tempting it

  84. would have been for Jesus in the

  85. wilderness to want to eat some bread

  86. after 40 days without food. I think

  87. often that we can forget that Jesus is

  88. divine and is fully God, but he was also

  89. fully man. And so, he would have

  90. experienced the same feelings and

  91. emotions as we do. He would have

  92. experienced human hunger. Anybody know

  93. anyone that gets hangry? Actually,

  94. don't. Don't put your hand up because

  95. that could be embarrassing. But hangry

  96. is when you're like getting angry cuz

  97. you're hungry and you're maybe a little

  98. bit unpredictable because you're that

  99. hungry. And I'm not saying that Jesus

  100. was hangry, but I am saying that after

  101. 40 days he was definitely hungry. And it

  102. definitely tells us that he is. In verse

  103. two, it says he was hungry. Just in case

  104. we didn't figure that out ourselves.

  105. Then directly after that, we read that

  106. the devil tempts him to turn stones into

  107. bread.

  108. The enemy comes to him in a time where

  109. he would have felt physically weak and

  110. tempts him with the very thing that he

  111. hadn't had and probably wanted. But

  112. while Jesus' desire to satisfy his

  113. appetite may have been strong after 40

  114. days of fasting, his desire to grow his

  115. spirit and in line himself with God's

  116. will was stronger. Could Jesus have

  117. turned the stones into bread? Of course

  118. he could have. He had the power and he

  119. had good reason to want to do it. But he

  120. didn't. Instead, he reminds Satan that

  121. man does not live by bread alone. And

  122. we'll circle back to that a bit later.

  123. But what I first want to draw our

  124. attention to is that this first

  125. temptation the enemy gives Jesus. He

  126. says, "If you are the son of God, tell

  127. the stone to turn into bread." And we

  128. see two approaches of the enemy here.

  129. Firstly, we see that he tries to get

  130. Jesus to doubt who he is and give him

  131. grounds for needing to prove his

  132. identity.

  133. Secondly, he appeals to Jesus's physical

  134. desire, presenting him with a temptation

  135. that might have felt hard to resist.

  136. So why does Satan attack Jesus' identity

  137. first? Now, a few passages before Jesus

  138. is in the wilderness, we read about

  139. Jesus's baptism and about the audible

  140. voice of God speaking over him, "You are

  141. my son whom I love. With you I am well

  142. pleased." And now the enemy is

  143. challenging that truth about who Jesus

  144. is by saying if you are the son of God.

  145. Why is this so important? Because if the

  146. enemy can get you to doubt who you are

  147. and to doubt who God is, the battle is

  148. already half won. When we waver in

  149. knowing who God is in our lives and we

  150. doubt his love, we're more likely to shy

  151. away from stepping into the call that he

  152. has for us, into who he is calling us to

  153. be. We become more vulnerable and

  154. susceptible to give into temptation. And

  155. it is far easier for the enemy to try to

  156. get us to do what he wants us to do.

  157. It's literally what he's been doing

  158. since the beginning of time. In the

  159. Garden of Eden, he says to Eve, I was

  160. going to say Garden of Eve. No, Garden

  161. of Eden. He says to Eve, "Did God really

  162. say that?" He's trying to make her doubt

  163. God and question his faithfulness.

  164. Because you see, knowing who God is and

  165. knowing that we are loved by him helps

  166. us to filter out the lies from the

  167. enemy. It anchors us in the truth of his

  168. word. There have been so many times in

  169. my own life that the enemy has tried to

  170. make me doubt who I am or doubt that God

  171. cares or that he's even there. But we

  172. need to learn to start recognizing these

  173. for what they are. And that is lies.

  174. The second thing that the enemy will try

  175. to do is to begin to speak into our

  176. desires, hoping to lead us into sin and

  177. away from the plans and the purposes

  178. that God has for our lives. You see, the

  179. act of turning stones into bread in and

  180. of itself wasn't necessarily bad because

  181. food and eating can be good things.

  182. Everyone who loves food said, "Amen."

  183. But the temptation lay in trying to

  184. satisfy a physical desire in the wrong

  185. way and at the wrong time outside of

  186. God's will and to use his power without

  187. regard for his purpose. You see, Jesus

  188. was in the wilderness to fast, to draw

  189. closer to God, to humble himself before

  190. him. And this was meant to be a time of

  191. preparation and of testing before he

  192. begins his ministry and fulfills his

  193. purpose. And what Satan is trying to do

  194. in this first temptation is to get Jesus

  195. to take a shortcut.

  196. He's trying to get him to he's trying to

  197. lure him into satisfying his own

  198. immediate need at the expense of his

  199. long range mission. By suggesting that

  200. Jesus appease his physical hunger, the

  201. enemy is tempting Jesus to seek

  202. momentary comfort at the sacrifice of

  203. his plan to die on the cross for the

  204. sins of the world.

  205. Yet, no matter how much his flesh might

  206. have desired to give in, how much he

  207. might have wanted to eat, his love for

  208. us and his desire to please God and

  209. fulfill his purpose gives him the

  210. strength to withstand the temptation.

  211. Jesus chooses to stand strong in the

  212. knowledge of who he is and to feed his

  213. spirit instead of his flesh. He chooses

  214. to have an eternal focus considering the

  215. spiritual formation taking place in his

  216. life rather than his current physical

  217. desire.

  218. And while some of us in this room maybe

  219. can relate to being driven by our

  220. stomachs and loving food and food being

  221. a hard thing to turn down, the truth is

  222. that appetite and desire are not always

  223. about food.

  224. In fact, a lot of the time it's about a

  225. lot of other things.

  226. While we may be able to see the wrong in

  227. some desires like desiring revenge or

  228. wanting control of others, there are

  229. many desires we have in this life life

  230. that can be very legitimate and very

  231. normal desires

  232. like the desire to be known, to be

  233. loved, to be valued, to be accepted, to

  234. feel pleasure, to have peace, to be

  235. happy, to be right. Others may be who

  236. desire to have a family, to be in a

  237. relationship, to be married, to be rich,

  238. promoted, liked, or to fit in. And like

  239. he did with Jesus, the temptation the

  240. enemy will present us with time and time

  241. again is to fulfill these desires in our

  242. own ways and in our own time without

  243. regard for God, his kingdom, his plans,

  244. or his purposes.

  245. You see, it's not necessarily a sin to

  246. want good things. But many of us fall

  247. into sin when we go about trying to

  248. satisfy a physical desire outside of

  249. God's design and intention for our

  250. lives.

  251. >> We live in a world of instant

  252. gratification, a world that seeks quick

  253. and easy pleasure and fulfillment,

  254. prioritizing the immediate rewards over

  255. the long-term benefits. Society

  256. continually encourages convenience,

  257. comfort, and compromise in order to

  258. obtain what we want. We're told, "Do

  259. whatever you want, whenever you want.

  260. Follow your heart. You do you, boo. And

  261. you do you, boo. And we are sold this

  262. egotistical pitch that life is all about

  263. us and what we can do for ourselves to

  264. feel good. Or sometimes it's also about

  265. not doing something that we know we

  266. really should do.

  267. Our flesh and our spirit will often be

  268. at war. In fact, Galatians tells us that

  269. they are in conflict with one another

  270. and that the only way to overcome the

  271. flesh, its desires, and its appetites,

  272. is to walk by the spirit and to stand in

  273. the truth of God's word. This passage

  274. can be found in Galatians 5:16-17.

    Galatians 5:16–17

  275. And it says, "So I say, walk by the

  276. spirit and you will not gratify the

  277. desires of the flesh. For the flesh

  278. desires what is contrary to the spirit

  279. and the spirit what is contrary to the

  280. flesh. They are in conflict with each

  281. other so that you are not to do whatever

  282. you want.

  283. The temptation we will continually face

  284. is to live according to our appetites

  285. and to our desires. Our flesh says,

  286. "Feed me now. Satisfy me now. You

  287. deserve it." But our spirit says, "Trust

  288. in God's timing." Like Pastor Aaron

  289. mentioned a few weeks ago, in God's

  290. kingdom, the wilderness is a place where

  291. formation happens and good things grow,

  292. but fruit takes time. And as people

  293. driven by various appetites and desires,

  294. we have a choice to make. We can choose

  295. to gratify our flesh to live for the

  296. momentary and temporary, satisfying a

  297. need in our own time and strength. Or we

  298. can be led by the spirit, rely on God,

  299. trust in his word, and invest into the

  300. thing that he is doing in our lives.

  301. If we want to become more like Jesus,

  302. there are going to be times that we are

  303. required to say no to our desires, to

  304. where our heart leads, or to what makes

  305. us happy. There are going to be times

  306. that we have to trust God and trust in

  307. his timing, even when it doesn't make

  308. sense or when it isn't what we feel like

  309. doing.

  310. James 1:es 2 to4 tells us to consider it

  311. pure joy my brothers and sisters

  312. whenever you face trials of many kinds

  313. because you know that the testing of

  314. your faith produces perseverance. Let

  315. perseverance finish its work so that you

  316. may be mature and complete not lacking

  317. anything.

  318. You see many of us want the spiritual

  319. transformation. We want to be mature,

  320. complete, lacking nothing. But we aren't

  321. willing to persevere through the

  322. wilderness, through the trial, and

  323. through the temptation. You see, we want

  324. the fruit of a godly life without the

  325. commitment, without the sacrifice, the

  326. surrender, the denying of ourselves for

  327. the purpose of becoming more like

  328. Christ. We want the comfortable, the

  329. convenient. We want the shortcut. But

  330. spiritual maturity, growth, and fruit

  331. take time. They require patience and

  332. they call us to trust God above all

  333. else. This life isn't about what we

  334. have, but it's about who we are

  335. becoming. And I don't know about you

  336. this morning, church, but I want to

  337. become more like Jesus.

  338. This Lent season is an opportunity for

  339. us to lean into this. It's an invitation

  340. into sanctification, surrender, and

  341. transformation. It's a time where we

  342. intentionally choose to deny ourselves,

  343. to deny our flesh in order that we might

  344. grow our spirit. It's a powerful time

  345. because we're choosing to say no to

  346. something, not to try and manipulate an

  347. outcome, but to die to ourselves and to

  348. draw closer to God. Matthew 16:24

    Matthew 16:24

  349. reminds us, "If anyone would come after

  350. me, let him deny himself and take up his

  351. cross and follow me."

  352. As many of us in this Lent season have

  353. chosen something to fast, we are

  354. developing disciplines in our lives to

  355. say no to what our flesh wants in the

  356. moment and to deny ourselves of our

  357. fleshly desires, choosing instead to

  358. lean into the spirit and saying, "God,

  359. would we desire you above all else?"

  360. Now, if anyone has had the privilege of

  361. being with me in a car, you will know.

  362. What are you laughing at, Joy?

  363. you will have discovered that I have a

  364. bit of a heavy foot at times, okay? So,

  365. that means that I use the speed limit as

  366. more of a guideline than an actual

  367. limit. Um, but guys, new year, new me,

  368. okay? I'm trying really hard this year

  369. to not do that. I was uh the reason that

  370. I do that is actually because I'm

  371. usually running late everywhere, so I

  372. like try to get there faster. But again,

  373. new year, new me, I'm trying to be on

  374. time or early. Today, I was actually 15

  375. minutes early. So, I mean, last week I

  376. was 5 minutes late and missed the prayer

  377. meeting. So, it's a work in progress,

  378. but um there was this time last year at

  379. the very start of the year and I was

  380. just starting school. Uh so, I'm a

  381. school teacher and it was the first day

  382. back after summer and I'd overestimated

  383. the time that I had in the morning to

  384. get to school on my first day back. So,

  385. as much as I do run late 80% of the time

  386. and that's not something I'm proud of, I

  387. actually hate being late. And I

  388. especially hate being late if it's the

  389. first day back at work. And so I get

  390. into the car with 10 minutes to go and

  391. I'm thinking all good. I've timed this

  392. before. It only actually takes 9 minutes

  393. and 20 seconds. So I'm safe as long as

  394. the red light stays green. Um so I've

  395. got time. Okay. So I've timed it. The

  396. song Because of Christ, the extended

  397. version, I can make it in that time. And

  398. so I'm driving along worshiping Jesus. a

  399. little bit stressed because of the time,

  400. but also chilling because I'm only up to

  401. the first bridge of the song. So, it's

  402. all good. We've got time. And I'm

  403. driving up 15th A and I realize that I'm

  404. going a little bit fast. And so, I slow

  405. down fairly quickly as I come up to the

  406. lights.

  407. It's all good. No one's watching. And

  408. then about 15 meters down the road at

  409. the next set of lights, I see red and

  410. blue flash behind me. Anyone I get like

  411. a racy heart when I talk about that.

  412. Like, I hate being stopped by the cops.

  413. And up until this point, it had never

  414. happened. Um, actually, no, that's a

  415. lie, but just not for speeding.

  416. Not for something terrible, either. Uh,

  417. it was actually for going too slow.

  418. Okay, so

  419. I'm, you know, here and there. I'm not

  420. in the middle. Okay. Anyway, um, so he

  421. asked me the questions. Typical, what

  422. was your speed? And I misunderstood

  423. where he was talking about. So I kind of

  424. thought he was talking about like up at

  425. the lights where it's like 50. So I kind

  426. of was like, oh, like 70. But he was

  427. actually talking about like the main bit

  428. of the road where it's like 80 and I was

  429. definitely not doing 70 there. So he

  430. thought I was lying to him to try get

  431. out of a fine. So now he's like grilling

  432. me and he's really not that happy with

  433. me. Um so I asked him if I can message

  434. my boss to say I'm going to be late cuz

  435. obviously now I'm definitely going to be

  436. late. And I realized that no matter what

  437. uh the speedometer was clocked pretty

  438. high and I'm going to be paying this

  439. fine and get them to merit whether I

  440. like it or not. So, I arrived to school,

  441. life goes on. But what's even worse is

  442. that a week later,

  443. only a week later, after dropping some

  444. kids home after youth, it's 10:45 p.m.

  445. and I want to get Mackers before it

  446. closes because I think we've established

  447. I really like food. And I'm doing 16 or

  448. 50 without even realizing. And next

  449. minute, a cop goes past me. And then I

  450. look in my rear view and he does the

  451. U-turn and he follows me and he pulls me

  452. over. And you can guess what happens

  453. with the rest of the story. So, within a

  454. single week, I've lost half my demerits

  455. and a fairly large sum of money. Just

  456. for the record, I barely speed now.

  457. Okay, I'm actually scared to lose my

  458. license, so I'm trying really hard to

  459. follow the road rules cuz that could be

  460. awkward. Um, so you guess I guess I

  461. could say I finally learned my lesson.

  462. But the crazy thing is that both of

  463. these times I was trying not to be late

  464. where I to where I wanted to be, but it

  465. ended up costing me more than if I

  466. hadn't sped. You see, in the long run,

  467. it actually cost me more time because I

  468. was stopped asked the questions. So, I

  469. was late anyways. It cost me money. It

  470. cost me dearits and it cost me a bit of

  471. my pride. Now, the reason I tell you

  472. this is not so that you'll think I'm an

  473. unsafe driver and never get in the car

  474. with me again. But it's to remind us

  475. that sometimes choosing to deny our

  476. flesh and not follow our desires comes

  477. at a cost. But giving into these very

  478. desires and temptations, compromising,

  479. trying to take the shortcut or speed

  480. things up, trying to do it in our own

  481. strength or on our own terms is going to

  482. cost us so much more.

  483. There's a story in the Bible about a

  484. whole people group who learned this the

  485. hard way. They learn this by trying to

  486. take the shortcut and they realize that

  487. it's never worth it. You see, a journey

  488. that was supposed to take them 10 to 11

  489. days, a few weeks at most, ends up

  490. taking them 40 years. Some of you may

  491. know the story of the Israelites, how

  492. God saves them from slavery, from the

  493. Egyptians, and leads them out into the

  494. wilderness to learn to trust him as he

  495. prepares to bring them into the promised

  496. land. However, the Israelites allow

  497. doubts to creep in about who God is and

  498. his faithfulness to them as his chosen

  499. people. They allow day-to-day challenges

  500. around food and water to overwhelm them

  501. with fear and anger. They grumble. They

  502. complain. And some of them even say,

  503. "Let's go back to Egypt."

  504. So, you see, they'd rather return to the

  505. slavery in Egypt than be in the

  506. wilderness where they have to learn to

  507. trust God and not depend on themselves.

  508. And instead of trusting God and trusting

  509. that he would show up for them every

  510. day, provide for them, and lead them,

  511. they give into lies like, "God can't be

  512. trusted or he's holding out on you." Or

  513. you could have this in your own terms.

  514. And despite continual evidence of God's

  515. love, power, provision, and grace, the

  516. Israelites are disobedient and try to

  517. take matters into their own hands. And

  518. as a result of their lack of faith, God

  519. declares that the current generation

  520. will not enter the promised land. You

  521. see, they tried to take the shortcut.

  522. They chose to do things themselves

  523. without regard for God or his purposes.

  524. And their disobedience and doubt cost

  525. them years of wandering without ever

  526. seeing the promises of God fulfilled.

  527. In Deuteronomy, after 40 years in the

  528. wilderness, we find Moses on the east

  529. bank of the Jordan River as he's

  530. preparing the new generation to enter

  531. into the promised land. And he reminds

  532. them of this. Deuteronomy 8:es 1 to3.

  533. Be careful to follow every command I am

  534. giving you today so that you may live

  535. and increase and may enter and possess

  536. the land that the Lord has promised on

  537. oath to your ancestors.

  538. Remember how the Lord your God led you

  539. all the way in the wilderness these 40

  540. years to humble and test you in order to

  541. know what was in your heart, whether or

  542. not you would keep his commands. He

  543. humbled you, causing you to hunger and

  544. then feeding you with mana which neither

  545. you nor your ancestors had known to

  546. teach you that man does not live on

  547. bread alone but on every word that comes

  548. from the mouth of the Lord. And this is

  549. the passage of scripture that Jesus

  550. quotes when the devil tempts him to turn

  551. stones into bread. And it reminds us

  552. that God alone can satisfy us. We learn

  553. that real life comes from total

  554. commitment to God and from living by

  555. every word that comes from him. It comes

  556. from trusting him and following where he

  557. leads, even when it doesn't make sense.

  558. It comes from surrendering to him and to

  559. his voice, not giving into the lies and

  560. the doubts from the enemy, even when

  561. they appear to satisfy our deepest

  562. desires.

  563. Where many people believe that life is

  564. about satisfying their own appetites and

  565. desires or being comfortable, Moses and

  566. now Jesus remind us that such things

  567. will never satisfy our deepest longings.

  568. In the end, they only leave us empty and

  569. wanting.

  570. And as Jesus replays the wanderings of

  571. his people years later, as he enters a

  572. 40-day wilderness and is tempted with

  573. many of the same temptations as the

  574. Israelites, we see him choosing to trust

  575. his father and listen to his voice alone

  576. instead of the lies of the enemy. Where

  577. Israel and all of humanity fails, Jesus

  578. succeeds and overcomes so that we might

  579. do the same. When we go through our own

  580. wilderness, whether we intentionally are

  581. being led into it, like in a season of

  582. Lent, or we somehow find ourselves in

  583. the midst of it, we need to learn to

  584. trust in God and to believe that he is

  585. enough.

  586. We need to live by every word that comes

  587. from the mouth of God and not allow the

  588. enemy to make us doubt who God is or to

  589. lead us into temptations and satisfying

  590. our own desires without regard for his

  591. truth.

  592. Jesus knew what the Israelites had

  593. forgotten or maybe simply hadn't learned

  594. yet. He knew that God is faithful. He's

  595. our provider, our protector, our

  596. creator, almighty God, and his ways are

  597. higher than our own. Jesus knew that

  598. everything he needed was found in the

  599. father. And church, everything that we

  600. need, the fullness of life is found in

  601. Jesus.

  602. But it is up to us to take to stand

  603. strong in this truth to learn how to not

  604. give into the lies and the doubts of the

  605. enemy and to not seek to satisfy the

  606. desires of our flesh. And the only way

  607. that we can do this is by following the

  608. pattern of Jesus. You see, Jesus knew

  609. the scriptures. He knew the truth of

  610. them and he believed in them contrary to

  611. the Israelites who knew of God but

  612. didn't truly know God or trust his word.

  613. Jesus teaches us that to overcome the

  614. enemy, we need to grow an in appetite

  615. for God's word, not for the things of

  616. this world. You see, it's not simply

  617. about knowing the word of God, but about

  618. realizing our deep need for it and

  619. having it deeply engraved into our

  620. hearts, seeking to understand it more

  621. and more. Jesus fulfilled and stood

  622. against the same temptations the

  623. Israelites failed to overcome because he

  624. knew and trusted in God's word. He was

  625. so deeply rooted in it. The word of God

  626. is the truth that we stand on, the

  627. nourishment that sustains us, and the

  628. weapon that we use to fight the enemy

  629. when he comes to attack us. In the armor

  630. of God listed in Ephesians 6, the sword

  631. of the spirit, which is the word of God,

  632. is actually the only offensive weapon.

  633. It is the only offensive tool and it has

  634. power.

  635. I heard it once said and it stuck with

  636. me is that the word of God is a sword,

  637. not a plastic butter knife. You know

  638. those knives that you use at potlucks

  639. and they just don't cut anything? Like

  640. they're plastic or even worse the paper

  641. ones and they just bend like they are

  642. useless, utterly useless. But the word

  643. of God is not that. It is a double-edged

  644. sword and it is powerful.

  645. But if we aren't in the word and we

  646. don't know the word, then we aren't able

  647. to use the word when attacks come. The

  648. thing is, and as we read on in later

  649. scriptures in Luke, the enemy knows the

  650. word too, and he will try to twist it,

  651. purposefully, misquote it, disregard its

  652. meaning, and he has no intention of ever

  653. following it. We need to know our word

  654. better than he does so that we can stand

  655. in its truth and know how to apply it to

  656. our lives.

  657. Jesus was also full of the spirit and

  658. relied on him. God was with the

  659. Israelites in the wilderness, too. His

  660. presence was present. presence was

  661. present. Oh well. Um his spirit was

  662. present in a pillar of cloud by day and

  663. fire by night. But they only relied on

  664. him when it was convenient to them. We

  665. need to be continually filled with the

  666. spirit of God. The word of God becomes

  667. living, active, transformative, and

  668. powerful when coupled with the presence

  669. of God. And Clinton spoke about a bit of

  670. that this morning about the need we have

  671. for God's presence in our lives. When we

  672. are spiritfilled, we can be spiritled.

  673. We can follow where he leads and learn

  674. how to align our lives more with who he

  675. is and what he's calling us to. John

    John 14:26

  676. 14:26 Jesus says, "But the advocate, the

  677. Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send

  678. in my name, will teach you all things

  679. and remind you of everything I have said

  680. to you."

  681. The Holy Spirit leads us, guides us,

  682. comforts us, reminds us of truth, and

  683. encourages us. Jesus was filled with the

  684. spirit. And if he needed the spirit to

  685. overcome temptations from the enemy, how

  686. much more do we need the Holy Spirit to

  687. strengthen us in times of trial?

  688. But church, can I tell you that the Holy

  689. Spirit is not just a genie in a bottle

  690. waiting to be called upon when we need

  691. him. He is constant. He wants to be part

  692. of every moment in our life. He wants to

  693. lead and guide and comfort and

  694. strengthen us daily.

  695. To walk in the spirit, we need to feast

  696. on the things of the spirit. We need to

  697. spend time in his presence,

  698. understanding more of who he is and

  699. allowing him to transform us from the

  700. inside out.

  701. And finally, we learn from Jesus to fix

  702. our eyes on eternity rather than the

  703. fleeting moment that we are in. The

  704. Israelites couldn't see past their

  705. present discomforts. And they allowed

  706. unbelief and doubt to shift their focus

  707. from God to their wilderness.

  708. Jesus knew what his mission was. He knew

  709. that there was more to his life than

  710. just this single moment in the

  711. wilderness. He knew that he was part of

  712. God's plan to save humanity. And he

  713. chose to focus on eternity rather than

  714. his current physical desire.

  715. The Israelites knew they were God chose

  716. God's chosen people. They knew where

  717. they were headed. Yet, every time the

  718. smallest inconvenience happened, they

  719. focused in on it and they let it

  720. distract them from their purpose. They

  721. let their desires and their appetites

  722. and their comfort lead their actions,

  723. forgetting that God is the one who is

  724. leading them.

  725. In 2 Corinthians 4:16 to18, we are

    2 Corinthians 4:16–18

  726. encouraged to have an eternal

  727. perspective.

  728. It says, "Therefore, we do not lose

  729. heart, though outwardly we are wasting

  730. away, yet inwardly we are being renewed

  731. day by day. For our light and momentary

  732. troubles are achieving for us an eternal

  733. glory that far outweighs them all. So we

  734. fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on

  735. what is unseen. Since what is seen is

  736. temporary, but what is unseen is

  737. eternal."

  738. Sometimes the moment that we are in can

  739. feel so overwhelming and the temptation

  740. to find a way out of it on our own is

  741. very real. But we're reminded in this

  742. verse not to lose heart, but to fix our

  743. eyes on what is unseen, on what is

  744. eternal. Now, don't hear what I'm not

  745. saying. I'm not saying to turn a blind

  746. eye to what you're facing that if you

  747. ignore it, it'll go away. No, I'm not

  748. saying that. But I'm saying that what

  749. you focus on is what you magnify. You

  750. see, focusing on eternity helps us to

  751. focus on God and magnify him in our

  752. lives and his strength and his power and

  753. it gives us the strength to endure

  754. through the trial, to endure through the

  755. temptation.

  756. My question for us today and the

  757. challenge we have in our wilderness is

  758. will we be like the Israelites?

  759. Will we doubt God's goodness, try to

  760. speed up the process, take the shortcut,

  761. satisfy needs and desires in our own

  762. strength, and live according to the

  763. flesh?

  764. Or will we be like Jesus, steadfast in

  765. the truth of who God is, who he says he

  766. is, trusting in his word and his timing,

  767. choosing to say no to what might fulfill

  768. an immediate desire for the sake of

  769. growing in our eternal purpose.

  770. The choice is ours.

  771. We can either be driven by desire or

  772. sanctified through surrender.

  773. We can choose to live on bread alone or

  774. every word that comes from the mouth of

  775. the Lord. We can listen to the enemy's

  776. voice of deception or we can follow

  777. God's wisdom and direction.

  778. It's not always going to be easy, but I

  779. can promise you it's going to be worth

  780. it. And so as we continue in this Lent

  781. season, my prayer for us is that we

  782. would grow in appetite for God's word.

  783. That we would be filled with his spirit

  784. and that we would learn to fix our eyes

  785. on eternity, not because we are trying

  786. to manipulate an outcome, but because we

  787. just genuinely desire more of who God

  788. is.

  789. And so I'm going to wrap up in just a

  790. moment. But can I just invite you to

  791. ponder that for a moment?

  792. Whatever is in this season of your life

  793. in the wilderness, whatever lies the

  794. enemy is maybe speaking over you, are

  795. you going to choose to listen to that or

  796. are you going to stand strong in the

  797. truth of God's word and of who he says

  798. that you are and who he says that he is?

  799. And maybe you're sitting here this

  800. morning

  801. and you've never actually known that you

  802. were created by a God who loves you.

  803. You've never actually known the truth of

  804. his word and what he says about you.

  805. Maybe you've chased after the things of

  806. this world and never been satisfied. Can

  807. I tell you this morning that there is a

  808. God who knows you, who loves you, who

  809. has called you by name, who wants to do

  810. life with you.

  811. Maybe this morning you feel like you

  812. once followed God, but you've actually

  813. allowed these lies and these uh

  814. different temptations to overtake you

  815. and you've walked away. You've strayed

  816. away from the path that he's called you

  817. to live out. Can I remind you that you

  818. are never too far gone from God's grace?

  819. that you are never too far gone from his

  820. love and that if you would like to come

  821. back to him, he is waiting with open

  822. arms.

  823. And so just in closing, I want to give

  824. everyone the opportunity this morning

  825. with every eye closed and with every

  826. head bowed.

  827. If you don't know Jesus,

  828. if you don't know this God who loves

  829. you,

  830. or if you've walked away from him and

  831. want to come back, can I invite you in

  832. this moment to just raise a hand in this

  833. room?

  834. I'm not going to count us down, but if

  835. that's you, would you just wave your

  836. hand right now?

  837. Awesome.

  838. Cool. Thank you, Jesus.

  839. Lord, we just pray for every person in

  840. this room. Lord, we thank you that you

  841. love them and that you've called them

  842. and that you have a plan and a purpose

  843. for them. And Lord, we pray whatever

  844. wilderness they are living in in this

  845. moment, whatever temptations they may be

  846. facing or lies they may be believing,

  847. God, would your truth penetrate through

  848. that. And God, would your truth, Lord,

  849. would overcome that. We just pray right

  850. now for every person in this room that

  851. your life and your light would be upon

  852. them right now in Jesus name. That as

  853. they go through their weeks and about

  854. their weeks that they would remember to

  855. grow an appetite for your word to be

  856. strong in spirit and filled with your

  857. Holy Spirit. And Lord, would they

  858. remember to set their eyes on the things

  859. of eternity. Bless them God as they go

  860. through their weeks in Jesus name. Amen.
