WHEN HOPE DOESNT LOOK LIKE WE EXPECTED | SUNDAY 3RD MAY | PS PAUL MILLER

they here? They're away this weekend. I

um I just had this You have to take it

to them all. Uh uh Anamarie, you have to

make sure you take good notes for this.

I I woke up this morning and uh who who

loves our interns? Yeah, our interns are

fantastic. If you don't know what they

do, they they they serve this church.

They serve people and they have given up

a year of their life to to come and

actually serve this church and serve our

nation and serve our city. And I just

woke up this morning. Wow. It was meant

to be this emotional just uh I just got

this thing. I'm going to take a There we

go. Slow down, Paul. Slow down. I just

had this word over turns that he is

worthy of your sacrifice.

You have to take this because the rest

are here. It's all right. I'm just going

to get enemy. He is worthy of your

sacrifice.

Most of us don't see the sacrifice, but

I'm going to say he is worthy of that

sacrifice.

We don't

compose myself. There we go. two German

missionaries, Johan and David, they

heard of a of an island nation that was

keeping slaves captive and the gospel

hadn't got to them.

To keep a long story short, no preacher,

no clergyman would ever be able to stay

on that island. The the owner refused

that and two young guys, they called,

they got the call and they got on a

boat, travel from Germany to Jamaica,

wherever it was. And on that boat they

said, "May the lamb that was slain

receive his glory."

I just see that over our interns this

year. I know it's it's weird. There some

grown man crying, but this is a real

thing over. He is so worthy of our

sacrifice.

He is worthy of our sacrifice. I'm just

going to carry on because I don't know

how to recover from that. But hey, my

name is uh uh Paul and uh if you haven't

met me uh my name is obviously Paul and

I'm part of the team here and it is my

privilege this morning to be up here

this morning and and just say you guys

are looking good and uh just a fabulous

team this morning. So I'm going to be

sharing from uh Luke 24 verse uh 13-35.

If you guys got your Bibles that would

be cool to turn there. But before we go

there I'm going to tell you about my

fabulous life group that I go to. It is

the greatest life group. It is called,

we need we need a better name. It is

called the Brookfield Life Group, but I

don't know why we haven't come up very

creative name. We actually our chat is

called uh Chatterbox Connect Fire.

That's our our group name. So, it is so

cute, isn't it? Um uh we were we the

other Monday we were just talking

through life because life group is about

studying the word of God. Yes. But it's

also about doing life together. And we

were just talking about our highs and

our lows, our our victories and our

challenges. And we're also doing this

game uh this resource called it's not

it's not just about Sundays. It's a it's

a card game or sort of prompt about

conversations and and some of those

questions we got prompted is is you know

like talking about yourselves is am I a

a home bunny or am I a a do I go out a

lot or what's what's hope mean to you?

And these other questions were uh I mean

do you what was the first impression of

me when you sort of saw me? Those sort

of questions. We're talking about that

and then one question popped up. It was

this weird one that we all sort of

struggled with was if Jesus was to turn

up to Toadonga Elim today, what clothes

would he be wearing? And we were just

like, you know, the moment like I have

never thought of this. And like some

people were like, u I think he's going

to have like robes on. I'm like, yeah,

maybe not. Some people were like, maybe

he's going to have like a really pimped

out Versace suit or something like this.

And and some of I think someone said he

would look probably like Brody, you

know, like I don't know what Brody with

baggie jeans and a t-shirt and and

someone with way more wisdom than me,

cuz it definitely wasn't me. He goes, "I

bet if he turned up, we wouldn't even

notice him.

He would just looked exactly like us."

And isn't that probably a more of true

statement than we realize, right? Who

can can you guys remember that game uh

Guess Who? Like do you can does this

generation over here remember what guess

who is? Yeah. Kind of a few nods over

there like that. You got 30 tiles in

front of you all with different sort of

uh expressions on their faces. Some with

glasses, some with beards, all that sort

of stuff. And and you would have to like

guess who the other person had and what

they were looking at. And so we're going

to play a game here this morning as I

start just to sort of soften the moment

here because I've already cried. We're

going to play guess Who. So I need you

guys to look around. Sort of look at the

people next to you. So okay. Okay. So,

I'm looking at someone. I've found that

person in the in this crowd. And okay,

my first clue is he is devilishly

handsome. All right. Okay. Look around.

Who? Don't stop looking at me. I'm not

going to talk about myself. Although I

am, you know, if the shoe fits. All

right. Look around. Okay. So, I see a

lot of the guys going, "Yeah, that's me.

That's me." All right. That's right. I

can see your shoulders back a little

bit. This is fantastic. Okay. So, next

one here is uh some will describe this

person wise beyond their ears. Oh. Oh,

straight away. A few guys. No, that's

not me. We called a few of the crowd

right there. So, wise are we still we

still guessing? We're still guessing.

Um, this is as someone would have said

this person has definitely married up.

You know what I mean? Like she is way

more attractive than him. So, I've just

sort of say so. Ross is like

this is fantastic. Um, uh, this person

um loves a good yarn. Okay. So, we sort

of All right. There's a few people out

there that don't know who this is. Some

would say he is reflective in nature.

So, does that sort of ring a bell

anywhere over there? So, so it's good.

I would say this person would probably

spend more time in prayer than you this

week. Oh, that's getting a little bit.

Everyone's like, "Dan, that's not me.

That cuts me off." And um

who who hopes that that was like kind of

the end? Like all those things are quite

nice to be talked about, right? You

know, that's cool. Maybe you want a

wife. Put your hand up there. You can.

That'll be good.

Uh, a magician. Magician won't reveal

his secret, so I won't tell you who I

was actually talking about there. But

that was definitely Pastor Aaron down

here. You know, reflective in his nature

cuz when this the lights are here, he

sort of it does sort of bounce off a

little bit there. I was going to go on

to cricket and stuff, but I thought

you'd lose you all. So,

what happens when hope does not look

like we expect?

What happens in our life when hope the

hope that we have does not look like we

expect?

We come to this portion of scripture

between

the arrest of Jesus and the torture, the

death and the burial and his

resurrection. We follow the story of two

disciples, Cleopus and one unknown

disciple. Maybe that's on purpose to so

we can insert ourselves into the story.

And we will just cut to verse 21 here.

It says this. But this is what they said

in the in the crux of what this this

thing is about is he says, "But we

Cleopus says we had hoped

we had hoped that he Jesus was the one

who was going to redeem Israel." Because

you got to understand Cleopus in this

moment. See, Friday has gone. Easter

Friday has gone. their friend that they

knew, their rabbi, their messiah that

they had hoped had not destroyed the

Roman Empire, but instead willingly died

a violent death at the hands of these

Romans.

So, they had gone through Friday seeing

their good friend give his life up for

something that they did not expect. And

they had gone through, they had woken up

Saturday morning lost, sad, despondent.

Had they just wasted three years

following someone who they believed was

the Messiah of the world but had let

himself be killed by the by the Romans.

They had gone through Saturday when

everyone had scattered and everyone was

confused and had not known what was

going on and why had Jesus not called

down angels. Why had he not like uh

Roger was saying why he had not struck

everyone with blindness or lightning?

They had gone through Saturday and they

had come to Sunday and they had waited

till Sunday, the third day that he said

that he was going to rise from the dead

and he was not around. Some ladies had

seen an empty tomb and Peter had seen an

empty tomb but they had not seen Jesus.

And so these two full of sadness, full

of despair, full of their hope being

crashed, their whole world around them

crushed. They decide to go home. They

decide to leave Jerusalem and travel

home. Maybe it was to start again. Maybe

it was to get their bearings in life,

maybe to figure out what happened. But

we find these guys here leaving

Jerusalem. So verse 13 of chapter 24 of

Luke, it says, "Now the same day, two of

them were going to a village called

Emirates, Emmas, sorry. But seven about

7 miles from Jerusalem,

roughly a two to two and a half hour

walk, three if you've got a uh if you're

slow." They were talking with each other

about everything that had happened, the

circumstances. As they talked and

discussed these things with each other,

Jesus himself came up and walked along

with him, but they were kept from

recognizing him. That's a powerful

statement. They were kept from

recognizing him. Was this because I

don't know like this is just a strange

thing. Like they had spent three years

with this guy. They had traveled with

him. They'd eaten meals with him. They

had seen him do so many miracles. And

you would think they would recognize

him. But maybe it was because Jesus is

what they had also seen him completely

disfigured. They had seen him could go

through all the pains of what he did in

the cross. And maybe they saw him

completely healed and they couldn't

recognize him. Maybe Jesus was wearing a

different colored t-shirt. I don't know.

But it could be that guys are just so

colorblind and so oblivious to the

things, but they could not see him. I

don't know about you guys. I have this

at home all the time when I'm looking

for the tomato sauce in the fridge,

right? And I am at the fridge. I have

been there for three and a half minutes

and I have checked every shelf, every

every sort of door, every nook and

cranny in the fridge and I cannot see

it. And Karen's yelling at me from the

lounge. It's in there. It's in there.

And that moment that all maybe guys we

fear is that when you hear them get up

cuz you have not found it's right there

in the door, they say, and you hear them

walking. So you start rattling through.

You start pulling everything out. And

and it's I don't know about you, but my

wife has magic, dark magic powers. she

can come past me as her arm goes into

the fridge. It is this it's it's weird.

As she goes into the fridge, this the

bottle of sauce appears. It is it is the

most uncanny thing. And my eyes are

opened. It's like, "Oh, there it is."

And she whacks me with a frying pan and

then we get on with life. So, how you

know?

But they were kept

from recognizing him.

Were they so despondent and sad

because their dreams of a free nation

under the rule from Roman rule didn't

come to pass.

They were so stuck in their

circumstances talking about what had

happened.

They couldn't see Jesus right there in

front of them.

If I reflect on our lives, if we if we

reflect on our lives, there's been many

times in if I even say my life that I've

been so stuck in circumstances and

situations that I have not seen Jesus

right next to me.

It's a scary prospect, is it not? That

three years of their lives they had

spent with Jesus and they were still

consumed with the problems in front of

me and they could not see Jesus.

I remember Aaron did this beautiful job

a few months ago talking about Haggi.

This was Sarah's and Abraham's and

Ishmael's Haggi and she finds herself in

such a horrible circumstance been being

kicked out of by Abraham. And go listen

to Aaron's sermon about this a few

months ago. It does it beautifully. But

Haggi if you you don't know this is the

first person to ever give God a name

before Abraham before anyone else gives

God a name. Haggi is the first to name

God.

And you find herself, she finds herself

dying of thirst.

She had puts her son Ishmael underneath

the tree to die away from her because

she couldn't stand the thought of him

dying in front of her. And she comes

into a bush and she starts to cry out to

God. And here we find in Genesis 21:1 19

Genesis 21:1

after her crying out, she goes, "Then

God opened her eyes and she saw a well

of water. So she went and filled the

skin with water and gave the boy a

drink. When we cry out to God, God opens

our eyes to see what's right in front of

us. The well was there the whole time,

but she couldn't see it. So she calls

God Alroy, translated as it means God,

the God who sees me, declaring, "I have

now seen the one who sees me." So we

come back to these two disciples. We see

in the middle of their pain, Jesus was

present.

Can we get this across our lives? In the

middle of what they were going through,

Jesus was still present with them. Even

when they could not see him,

>> he was right there with them.

>> Walking the walk with them, present in

their pain.

>> Their eyes could not see it, but Jesus

was right there beside him.

>> How good is that for our life? Is it not

encouraging this morning that what we go

through, the pain, the the the

hopelessness, the the the the journey of

life, the highs and lows, Jesus is right

there beside us. Even if we cannot

recognize him. So good to know that,

isn't it? This morning, in the midst of

their circumstances, Jesus was present.

When we are too caught up in our worries

and our concerns, Jesus is still

present. When we're still so

hyperfocused on our reels and our news

and our what's happening in Ukraine,

Jesus is still present in our

surroundings. When we look at our bank

account, Jesus is still present in those

zeros. He's present in those zeros.

He's walking with us. We need eyes to

see him this morning. How many times

have we missed Jesus walking beside us

because we have kept something from

seeing him. And our prayer this morning

is give us eyes to see you, Jesus.

Back to the disciples. He asked them,

this is Jesus talking, "What are you

discussing together as you walk along?"

They stood still, their faces downcast.

One of them named Cleopus asked him,

"Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem

who does not know the things that have

happened in the last these days?" And

Jesus, I if you don't know if Jesus has

a sense of humor, this is the word,

"What things?" The very dude that was

whipped 39 times and went through the

cross, he's like, "What things?" He's

like, it is such an iconic moment of

where Jesus

Jesus knew exactly what they were

talking about. Yet he still asked the

question.

He knows exactly what you're going

through this morning, Mezzanine.

Yet he still asked the questions, "What

things?"

He's walking beside you. The hope is

right there and he knows the answers,

but he's still going to engage you and

he's still going to go, "What are you

going through?

It's powerful to know this that he is

walking beside us and he's entering into

our circumstances. He's not just

loitering behind. He's not He goes,

"What things are you going through?"

Isn't it? As a parent, sometimes you

just like when you're parenting your

kids, right? You just want to get them

and you like you just want to I don't

know how to describe it without being

violent. like you just want to grab them

and go stop doing this and do this

instead. Like I want to hit you with a

frying pan. Like uh I don't know where

frying pans are coming from. But Jesus

doesn't do that. He doesn't grab these

two disciples and slap them with like a

fish. He That was such a good word from

Sue, wasn't it? He goes, "What things

are you going through?" He enters into

what they're going into.

The answer enters into your problem.

Church, isn't it encouraging that the

creator of the world wants to know what

we're going through?

Come on. He wants us to vent to him, to

share our burdens, to cast our cares on

him. David got this in Psalm 142. He

goes, "I cry aloud to the Lord. I lift

up my voice to the Lord of merc for

mercy. I pour out before him my

complaint. Before him I tell my trouble.

When my spirit grows faint within me, it

is you who watch over my way. Imagine if

we took all our complaints to him first.

All our disappointments to Jesus instead

of social media.

Imagine we took our anger to Jesus first

before we poured it out on those around

us. Imagine if we took all our

frustrations to Jesus before we sent

that email. Yeah. Just it would be so

good. Imagine if we spent some time

alone with him before we walk out that

door on that relationship.

Jesus is present. He's walking with us

and he wants to enter into our

circumstances.

Verse 25, we carry on after him

listening to a whole lot of verses about

them explaining. He goes, he said, Jesus

said to them, how foolish you are. I

love the saying, love has been walking

with them. He has been entered into

their conversation. And uh instead of

just going there, there it's going to be

okay. Tomorrow is a new day. Life is un

life is unfair. He goes, "This is the

this is love telling us what to do. How

foolish you are."

Come on. Jesus does not speak to the

circumstances. He reminds us. Let's see.

See what he goes. He goes, "How foolish

you are and how slow you are to believe

all the prophets have spoken. Did not

the Messiah have to suffer these things

and enter his glory. And beginning with

Moses and all the prophets, he explained

to them what was said in all the

scriptures concerning himself." Okay?

So, love walks with us. Love enters into

our conversation. And love looks like he

doesn't just go there, there, it's okay.

You'll get over it. You You will get

through today. No, he goes, "Guys, you

don't understand. We don't believe with

your heart. Let me show you in the

scriptures what you can go through." It

it's it's interesting like if I was to

say you guys um imagine if I said like,

"Let's come back to the next week when

when when pastor Aaron's uh sort of

sharing next week you're going to come

and it's going to be the greatest uh day

in your life. Your hearts are going to

be burning. Your whole life is going to

be changed. You'll never be the same."

And so you imagine you turned up next

week and instead of worship, instead of

baristas, instead of great good-looking

greeters and funny MC's that we have,

and Pastor Aaron just gets up and and

just goes through a Bible study for

three and a half hours because that's

exactly what happens here in the

scripture. Jesus does just takes these

people on a through the Bible.

He uses the scriptures to get through

their unbelief.

He doesn't talk about their current

circumstances. He reminds them of what

God has already done and promised. See

the Greek language has two words for the

word of God. There's obviously the logos

which is the written word of God and

Rama which is the spoken word of God. So

we literally have the Rama which is

Jesus the spoken word of God. He is he

could have said anything but he goes

back to the logos. He goes back to the

written word of God to help these

disciples see who he was right next to

them. He doesn't talk about

circumstances. He doesn't talk about all

that sort of stuff. He talks about

Jesus. Guys, we need to know Jesus

through the scriptures.

Can I say this? The clearer we know

Jesus from the Bible, the quicker we

will be to recognize him.

He is with us. Even when we don't see or

feel, he listens to all our complaints.

And the way faith is developed is by

hearing the word of God and reading,

understanding the word of God. Verse 32,

they say this. Were not our hearts

burning with us while he was talking

with us on the road and opened the

scriptures.

If we had to identify Jesus, can I ask

this question? Based if we had to

identify Jesus in a in a lineup, it's a

weird sort of thing to think about.

Based on how much we read the Bible, do

we think we can identify him?

If we were had to identify Jesus to the

extent of our Bible reading, how well

would we go? This is not asked to

embarrass or shame but to create a

hunger in us to know him through the

reading and hearing of the word of God.

We live in a time of an abundance,

right? We have uh printed Bibles a we

have Uver Bibles. We have two zillion uh

devotions available on Uver. And we have

so much opportunity to know him. And yet

we live in a hyperdistracted world.

Right? Can I can I I think I wrote this

down. We have disciplined ourselves to

live highly distracted.

A lot of us will go, I don't have time

or I don't have the the energy or I

don't have the the opportunity to read

the Bible. Yet I can say this. We have

disciplined our ourselves to live highly

distracted lives through phones and

conversations and through what's going

on around us. We have disciplined our

lives to to live highly distracted. We

may call it downtime or me time. But we

have habits in our lives that keep us

distracted. Yet it does not fulfill us.

It does not keep us whole. It just it

doesn't fulfill anything. The brokenness

of our marriages, our relationships, our

loneliness, our anger, it's always still

there.

It's funny. all the stats that we have

in our society is we're getting more

anxious, more worried, more

disconnected, more alone.

It seems everything the world offers is

falling coming up short.

Like George said when he got baptized

three weeks ago, I did see George here

somewhere. He goes, "I tried filling the

hole in my heart with work. It didn't

work. I've tried filling it with

marriage and it didn't work. I tried

filling it with kids and it didn't

work." He goes, "Not till I found Jesus

that the hole in my heart was finally

complete."

Lifeway did a a study of 40,000 people

ages 8 to 80.

And they said that they uh tracking what

actual reading of the Bible does and

helps people in their lives. And it said

this, they said, "If you read the Bible

once a week, there is no discernable

difference in your life." So today,

there's no discernable difference from

what I the Bible that we're getting. If

you read it two to three times, there's

a slight increase in your change of your

life and what you go through. But they

say when people engage with the Bible

for four times in a week, things

drastically ramp up. The more time you

spend getting to know Jesus, the more

this is what the stats say. If you read

the Bible four times in a week, loan the

lonely uh feeling lonely drops 30%

across those people. If you read the

Bible four times a week, anger issues

drop 32%.

If you read the Bible four times in a

week, bitterness in relationship drops

40%. This is this is a massive survey

across 40,000 people across all ages.

This is what what the stats say. If you

read the Bible four times a week,

alcoholism drops 57%.

This is just by reading the word of God,

guys. Sex outside of marriage drops 68%

when you read the Bible four times in a

week. Come on, guys. Spearing feeling

spiritually stagnant drops 60% when you

read the Bible four times in a week.

Viewing pornography drops 61% when you

read the Bible four times in a week.

Sharing your faith jumps 200%.

>> Sharing your faith jumps 200% when you

read the Bible four times in a week.

How good is this? What we're looking for

is in front of us.

Jesus is walking with us. He's entered

into our circumstances. He wants to hear

our vent, but he also wants to show

himself to us through the word of God.

And when you read the word of God, your

whole life has changed.

As we come to a close, can I get uh

Ellie on the keys? As they approached

the village by which they were going,

Jesus continued on. I love this. He

continues on as if he was going further,

but they urged him strongly, saying,

"Stay with us, for it is nearly evening.

The day is almost over." So he went in

to stay with him.

But they urged him strongly, saying,

"Stay

with us." Jesus indicated that he was

going to go further. But verse 29, they

urged him strongly, saying, "Stay with

us."

Jesus was going to go on.

He was going to go past. He was going to

continue. They had to invite him in.

They had to initiate. Stay with us.

The disciples had to invite Jesus into

their world and invite him into their

life and say these words, "Stay with us.

And it goes on to say that

when he came, he like Roger did, he

broke the bread. They had communion and

their eyes were finally opened and they

were able to see Jesus for who he was.

Can I say this? This journey this

morning is not leading us is leading us

not to getting our problems solved or

venting to God or hearing scripture.

It is getting our eyes open to Jesus by

inviting him into our hearts.

When you when I have the wrong view of

Jesus, life and circumstances will lead

you will lead you eventually to a walk

away from him. If Jesus is just a rubber

stamp on your life,

or he is only just a safe place to run

to when you get in trouble,

you will probably find yourself walking

away from him because you don't know who

he fully is. In week three of Alpha, we

do this one week called, it is probably

the most powerful week in Alpha

because it talks about who is Jesus.

He's either a liar, a lunatic, or he's

Lord.

And I can tell you, we've had had

atheists come through. We've had people

struggling with faith come through.

People that are just searching come

through. We've had people from different

faiths come through Alpha. And I

encourage you if this is you, man, I

would sign up outside today cuz it will

change your life. Not alpha per se, but

getting into a group with people that

are going to have a meal with you and

share life with you and discuss what's

going on in your world and having a

place for you to vent all your doubts

and vent all these sort of things. They

come to this point on generally on week

three is Jesus is either a liar or he's

a lunatic or he's Lord.

And this morning, what is he to you?

Is Jesus a liar? Did he all he say was a

lie and it's a waste of time? Or is he a

lunatic? Was he just crazy? Was he all

that he said that is just crazy? Or to

this morning, is he lord of your life?

Have you invited him into your life?

you get your eyes opened.

And as we close, can I have every head

bowed, every eye closed? Because I just

want to do a challenge to every single

person here because this is a decision

between you and Jesus, not between you

and the person next to you.

I don't know why you're here this

morning. I don't know what circumstance

you find yourself in. Maybe your world

has imploded. Maybe you are here just

trying to restart your life. Maybe you

are stuck in a rut. Maybe you're just

here focusing on your own problems. Can

I tell you this morning, the Bible says

that all have fallen short.

All have missed the mark.

It says that sin which is missing the

mark separates us from God.

It says that sin, the wages of sin is

death. But like Roger said, that God

loved us so much that Jesus came to pay

a price for us. a price that we not did

not deserve, but a price that was

lovingly laid down for us. And the Bible

says that whoever believes in him,

Jesus, will receive eternal life. And

the Bible says anyone who places their

hope in God will not be disappointed.

And when you confess Jesus before man,

Jesus confesses you before the father.

and with every head bowed and every eye

closed. And I've been talking about

Jesus a lot this morning. And maybe

you'll hear that you don't have an

active a real relationship with Jesus.

And my heart this morning is that you

would not leave this place, mezzanine.

You would not leave this place online.

You would not leave what you're doing

right now without an opportunity to get

it to say to Jesus, "Come and stay in my

life."

And how we do that is we simply we're

I'm going to lead you in a simple

prayer. Uh and but before I do that, I

just want to know who is going to be

included in that prayer. So with every

head bowed, every eye closed because I

just want this between you and God. If

there's anyone here who would love to or

would like to accept Jesus Christ as

their savior this morning, who wants to

place their life into his arms and to

come and say, "Jesus, can you come and

stay with me in my life and lead me?" On

on the count of three, I'm just going to

ask for hands to be lifted. One, if God

is doing something in your life, why

don't you lift your hand? Two, if

there's something, if your heart's

racing, why don't you lift a hand on the

count of three? Three. There's any hands

in this place that just need to get

lifted. Yeah, his hands. Cool. His hands

going up all over the place. There's

hands in the mezzanine. There's hands

across the front. There's hands in the

back. There's hands in the front. This

is fantastic. God, church is doing

something God. Church, God is doing

something amazing this morning in this

place. Holy Spirit, let's lift those

hands nice and high. Come on, lift those

hands. This is not a a a scary moment.

This is a moment to celebrate. Come on,

church. Why don't we give a round of

applause just for those that have got

their hands lifted?

It's so exciting. There's hands. That's

so awesome to see. So, with every head

bowed, I'm just going to lead you in a

real simple prayer before I hand back to

Pastor Aaron as he's going to close the

service. And this prayer is just it's

just a simple prayer that just

acknowledges who we are and and invites

Jesus to come and stay in our heart. So,

and why don't we church the why don't

the whole church just say this because

it's just it's encouraging and it helps
