  1. and grab a seat.

  2. Fantastic. Good to be together, eh?

  3. Couple of people think it's good to be

  4. together. That's good.

  5. Awesome.

  6. Hey, uh this morning we are actually

  7. starting a new series and uh it's

  8. actually a series that um we will uh be

  9. doing on a Sunday, but they'll also be

  10. um a study series for our life groups.

  11. So, our life groups have the option of

  12. um of going over that study material. So

  13. if you go to a life group and they don't

  14. do the study material, it probably means

  15. they didn't enjoy this morning's

  16. message, your leader. But um so we'll

  17. we'll find out um whether uh whether

  18. that's happening or not. But that means

  19. actually as well at the end of this

  20. morning, there is actually an

  21. opportunity if you're not currently part

  22. of a life group. We are having sign up

  23. Sunday. And so there is going to be an

  24. opportunity for you to um sign up um to

  25. a life group and uh Sarah will come up

  26. at the end of the message and she's

  27. going to lead us in that time. So, just

  28. so you know, that's where we're heading

  29. that we will be having life group sign

  30. up because uh man, we so believe that

  31. it's amazing to be in gatherings like

  32. this with um the church together where

  33. we can join our voices and praise and

  34. sing and and just be together. And then

  35. it's also so important that we can

  36. gather in smaller groups where we can

  37. encourage one another, where you can be

  38. seen and see others. And so um that's

  39. kind of uh where we're heading this

  40. morning. So uh our series that we are

  41. starting is called uh bold. And uh I

  42. wonder for you what kind of uh thoughts

  43. and what kind of emotion is invoked when

  44. you hear the word bold. probably for

  45. many of us when we hear that word we

  46. straight away think of someone else

  47. right like have you ever noticed it's

  48. always easy to see boldness in the life

  49. of someone else rather than in your own

  50. life and like naturally sometimes people

  51. will say to you um you know oh well that

  52. was really bold and you thought well no

  53. I didn't really think that was just me

  54. like who's ever encountered that and

  55. then you see someone else and you're

  56. like how on earth could you do that man

  57. YOU ARE SO BOLD AND they're like oh well

  58. no that's just kind of what I do and

  59. you're like man I wish I could just kind

  60. of do what what they kind of do and uh

  61. this idea of boldness we can sometimes

  62. feel like there is this uh gap between

  63. when we hear the word boldness man I'm

  64. not living that but I even want to start

  65. this series by saying as we begin to

  66. consider this concept and we are so

  67. aware of maybe the gap in in our lives.

  68. Can I suggest you are probably far

  69. bolder than you realize?

  70. It doesn't mean we can't grow, but

  71. you're probably far bolder than you

  72. realize. And there are probably things

  73. you do in your world that other people

  74. wish they had the ability and the

  75. boldness to do.

  76. And and so it's important because we are

  77. going to talk about how we grow in

  78. boldness. But we are it's an important

  79. starting point because all of us

  80. inherently have something to grow from.

  81. All of us do have some inherent

  82. boldness. And the the subtitle of this

  83. uh series is actually finding your

  84. voice. And uh it's an interesting

  85. subtitle because sometimes when we uh

  86. come to uh uh a topic like boldness and

  87. we even discuss something like finding

  88. your voice, it can kind of be like, wow,

  89. is this just some journey that I go on

  90. to discover the real me? And uh and in

  91. one sense that is true, but but we're

  92. not coming at this from a humanistic

  93. point of view where we're saying, "Wow,

  94. what does boldness look like in our

  95. humanity?" But we're actually coming at

  96. it from a biblical point of view. And in

  97. Proverbs, it says this, "The righteous

  98. are as bold as a lion." The righteous

  99. are as bold as a lion. And so that tells

  100. us that if you are a follower of Jesus,

  101. if you've received him and you have the

  102. righteousness of Christ, boldness is

  103. part of your new identity.

  104. >> It is part of your born again identity

  105. and part of my bornagain identity to be

  106. bold.

  107. >> Right?

  108. But if any of us have been to the UK and

  109. you've ever got on the subway systems,

  110. you'll know they say that famous phrase,

  111. mind the gap, because you know when you

  112. want to go from one place to another,

  113. you need to get on the train, but

  114. there's a gap. And uh it's actually

  115. pretty hard to fall down the gap. But of

  116. course, when you're there the first

  117. time, you're like, mind the gap and you

  118. like uh it's this massive step to step

  119. into. like it's feeling like, "Oh my

  120. goodness, how I don't want to fall

  121. through that." And then by the time

  122. you've rode two or three trains, you

  123. realize you mind the gap without even

  124. thinking about it. But sometimes there

  125. can be a gap in our lives between where

  126. we feel we're supposed to be and the

  127. boldness that the Lord is inviting us

  128. into. And so over this series, I want us

  129. to be able to look at what would it like

  130. look like for us to grow in boldness?

  131. What would it look like for that to

  132. increase in our lives? And not just any

  133. boldness, but a biblical boldness.

  134. Because how many people have ever met a

  135. Christian that was bold, but it was not

  136. a biblical boldness?

  137. You ever been the second Christian on

  138. the scene behind the person who was

  139. bold, but it wasn't a biblical boldness?

  140. That's not very fun uh either. So, we're

  141. confessing. Have you ever been a person

  142. that had boldness and not biblical

  143. boldness? Absolutely. are right here. So

  144. this gap between maybe hearing the word

  145. that the righteous are as bold as a lion

  146. and feeling like wow that doesn't really

  147. feel like it's me. The good news this

  148. morning is if you feel like like that

  149. like wow I don't know the righteous are

  150. as bold as a lion. I don't really feel

  151. as bold as a lion. I can probably

  152. suggest in one sense you're probably in

  153. pretty good company. I would suggest

  154. most of us in some sense don't get up in

  155. the morning and go you're a lion as you

  156. look in the mirror. You probably uh

  157. sometimes if you're anything like me

  158. feel more like a mouse. Um

  159. but this idea that the righteous are as

  160. bold as a lion and then wow I don't seem

  161. to be living that out. I'm f um I'm

  162. thankful for a famous uh piece of

  163. scripture that's really well known where

  164. Paul writes to Timothy and uh he says

  165. that God has not given us a spirit of

  166. fear but of love, power and a sound

  167. mind. So here he he's writing to this uh

  168. young leader Paul is writing to him and

  169. he says I want to remind you something.

  170. God has not given us a spirit of fear.

  171. See, can I say this morning, boldness is

  172. not a personality type.

  173. You can be an extrovert and not be bold

  174. and you can be an introvert and be as

  175. bold as a lion. It is not, we are not

  176. talking about a personality type. So,

  177. we're not saying, "Hey, you need to

  178. discover a new personality." Maybe some

  179. of us do, but that's not what this

  180. series is about. Um, you know, we're not

  181. saying, hey, you need to be someone

  182. completely different. We're saying that

  183. there is boldness is actually the fruit

  184. of righteousness. So, what stops us

  185. walking in boldness? It is not our

  186. personality type. Here Paul writes to

  187. Timothy and he says, God has not given

  188. us a spirit of fear.

  189. Now I I think in this context he's

  190. actually talking about a governing fear.

  191. So he's saying, "Hey, God has not given

  192. you a spirit where fear should govern

  193. your life." And for us as believers, God

  194. has not given us a spirit where fear

  195. should govern our lives. And so I guess

  196. the question is if if we are living

  197. sometimes feeling like we are being

  198. pulled back and we cannot express who

  199. we're supposed to be, if that fear does

  200. not come from God, where does it come

  201. from?

  202. And uh if maybe the obvious answer might

  203. be well it comes from the devil and that

  204. might be the obvious and true answer and

  205. I believe that is true but it's also a

  206. little bit simplistic because it does

  207. come from the devil but how does it come

  208. to us? comes through experiences and

  209. moments where we step out or we do

  210. something for the first time and we have

  211. an experience of being pushed back

  212. against and we learn something in that

  213. moment that it was not appropriate for

  214. you to be bold then. And so for many of

  215. us, we've had moments in childhood,

  216. growing up, first job, uh at school, all

  217. those kind of things where we have

  218. stepped out in some form of boldness.

  219. And what we have uh the message we have

  220. received is no, you just need to be uh

  221. pulled back a little bit. And so a

  222. spirit of fear has come in that begins

  223. to resist the call to be a bold person.

  224. And so my prayer as we uh look at this

  225. over the next few weeks is that we will

  226. uh begin to

  227. discover again what it is to grow in a

  228. holy righteous boldness that God would

  229. have for all of us.

  230. So I don't know exactly where the fear

  231. that might govern your life and might

  232. leave you feeling repressed. I don't

  233. know exactly where that came from. But I

  234. do know this. It did not come from God.

  235. God does not give a spirit of fear or

  236. timidity. But the good news is if we are

  237. in a governing uh and feel like we're

  238. being governed by fear, the Lord says uh

  239. sorry, Paul says that the spirit that

  240. God gives us is a spirit of love, power,

  241. and a sound mind. He doesn't use the

  242. word boldness, but I believe this is an

  243. awesome definition of what it means to

  244. be wholly bold,

  245. love, power, and sound mind. I remember

  246. when I was first saved, at many times I

  247. was bold in my workplace, but I wasn't

  248. always loving. Sometimes my boldness uh

  249. was on a level higher than my loving.

  250. And I remember I I I shared with this

  251. lady who I sat next to and I would um

  252. share a few times a week with her and it

  253. was boldness and mostly my heart was in

  254. the right place but I was probably a

  255. little bit um

  256. a new Christian passionate and my

  257. boldness was greater than my love even

  258. though maybe I had a little bit of love

  259. there. And I remember she had a

  260. Christian flatmate, this girl, and one

  261. day she came into work and she was like,

  262. "Oh, my flatmate said that you're really

  263. discouraging to me." And I was like, "Is

  264. she a Christian?" She's like, "Yes." So

  265. I thought, "Well, I'm never going to her

  266. church." Like uh and uh in that moment,

  267. I initially thought, "Oh, yeah, that

  268. flatmate's one of those weak Christians,

  269. you know, she's this is seriously what's

  270. going through my head." Like here I am

  271. boldly sharing the gospel. Like I'm, you

  272. know, it was at Inland Revenue

  273. Department of all places. Like let me

  274. tell you, you want to go into the lion's

  275. den, you go into a government

  276. department. But hallelujah, Jesus came

  277. to be with tax collectors. And so, uh,

  278. I'm like, I'm claiming it. I'm Matthew

  279. there in that place. And I can tell you

  280. it was dark. AND I'M LIKE, HERE I AM

  281. SHARING THE GOSPEL. And then her

  282. flatmate who's meant to be on the same

  283. team as me isn't challenging her. She's

  284. challenging me through her sending the

  285. message back that maybe what I'm saying

  286. isn't actually landing. Why? Because I

  287. was being bold, but it wasn't a bold

  288. that was anchored in love, power, and

  289. self-control. And so holy boldness looks

  290. like love, power, and self-control.

  291. And this morning is really just an

  292. introduction to this series. And over

  293. the next uh three weeks we are going to

  294. look at at this from different angles.

  295. But I wonder if we are to grow in

  296. boldness what is the expression of that?

  297. What is the expression of boldness to be

  298. in our lives? I mean boldness will look

  299. different for different people but we've

  300. called this series finding your voice

  301. because so often boldness is attached to

  302. our speech in some way. So often it's

  303. the inability to say the thing that I'm

  304. supposed to say or to pray the prayer

  305. that I'm supposed to pray or to put the

  306. boundary in place in a relationship that

  307. I'm supposed to put in place. And so

  308. over the next few weeks we are going to

  309. be looking at this topic through the

  310. lens of finding your voice because there

  311. is a Greek word uh it will come up on

  312. the screen uh the Greek word uh paracia

  313. and it is regularly translated bold in

  314. the New Testament but the way it is

  315. translated bold is it actually means

  316. finding your voice or an unreserved

  317. speech.

  318. This week we were down in I was down in

  319. Wellington um Sarah and I down at an

  320. elim pastor's day and we had a um

  321. a mental health expert sharing with the

  322. pastors and he was sharing on different

  323. types of leadership and um I'm aware we

  324. I'm we're about to do this series on

  325. boldness and in the midst of it he

  326. shares about two paradigms times of

  327. leadership where which are both good but

  328. if either is taken to their extreme you

  329. end up in not a good place. And so he he

  330. paralleled these two thoughts. He was

  331. like it's good to be a driven leader but

  332. when you are hyperdriven you begin to

  333. care about results at the expense of

  334. everything else. And then the the the

  335. other thing that he began to talk about

  336. was a compensating leader. And that is

  337. where you don't want to address things

  338. because um you know you you think hey I

  339. won't address that I'll just move on and

  340. you end up compensating for things

  341. rather than actually being willing to

  342. address the things that we need to

  343. address. And I'm sitting there thinking

  344. I'm preaching on boldness this weekend

  345. and I I am through my mind I am seeing

  346. both don't worry I was mistakes of both.

  347. I'm like, here's where I'm too driven.

  348. And I'm like, man, here are situations.

  349. I don't just mean as a leader. I just

  350. mean in my life where I realize I'm

  351. actually not finding my voice. I'm

  352. compensating. And sometimes I can put

  353. the great language around it. Oh, the

  354. reason why I didn't say anything like

  355. have you ever been like me and said

  356. like, "Oh, I just felt, you know, the

  357. spirit that it wasn't the time to

  358. address it."

  359. You ever realize that? You ever like me

  360. and it's like, and if we're really

  361. honest, sometimes it wasn't the fact

  362. that the Holy Spirit was telling us not

  363. to address it. It was that we were

  364. uncomfortable to address it. And we

  365. needed to find our voice.

  366. And maybe, yes, there was a feeling of

  367. discomfort, but maybe that discomfort

  368. was actually the Holy Spirit inviting us

  369. into finding our voice that we would be

  370. able to say what would need to be said,

  371. not in a boastful or arrogant way, but

  372. with love, power, and self-control that

  373. we would be to express that. And so I

  374. realize that sometimes I take my fear

  375. and I baptize it and I call it an asset.

  376. Like sometimes I actually take my

  377. inability to find my voice and I

  378. spiritualize it and try and say, "Oh, I

  379. just had discernment. It it wasn't the

  380. right time." And uh and then you know,

  381. funnily enough, it was like, "Oh, it was

  382. going to be the next week." But you know

  383. what? The Holy Spirit decided that

  384. wasn't the right time either. And uh

  385. after a while I felt the gentle nudge of

  386. the Holy Spirit saying, "You've got to

  387. stop blaming me

  388. because I am actually the one who wants

  389. you to find your voice, not to have it

  390. repressed." And so my prayer for all of

  391. us as we um do this series is that all

  392. of us would find what it is in a holy

  393. loving way with no sense of arrogance

  394. but with absolute humility. We would

  395. know what it is to find our voice in the

  396. place of prayer. We would know what it

  397. is to find our voice in our

  398. relationships. We would know what it is

  399. to find our voice in evangelism. and we

  400. would be able to minister to people that

  401. we would not be driven by fear, but we

  402. would be free. I'm going to pray and

  403. then um Pastor Sarah is going to come

  404. and and just talk about uh sign up

  405. Sunday. But Lord, I thank you that you

  406. have not given us a spirit of fear. Why

  407. don't you lift your hands if you're

  408. comfortable? Lord, thank you that you've

  409. not given us a spirit of fear,

  410. but of love, power, and a sound mind.

  411. And Lord, I bless each person who feels

  412. like they do have no courage within

  413. them. Lord, I bless them first of all

  414. that you would give them eyes to see the

  415. courage that is already there. Lord,

  416. would you illuminate that over their

  417. lives?

  418. And Lord, I pray that they would sense

  419. the invitation of heaven

  420. into a journey of finding their voice.

  421. Lord, that we would be a company of

  422. people who would be loving,

  423. powerful, self-controlled, Lord, wrapped

  424. up in boldness, serving you with

  425. everything you have for us. Lord, I

  426. bless each person in the mighty name of

  427. Jesus. Amen. Amen. Awesome. S
