I don't know if you're paying attention
-
but some of those videos people had
-
their hands up in
-
worship uhoh might be a little sneak
-
preview what we getting ready to talk
-
about in the Baptist church today uh
-
look all right I have enjoyed well we've
-
only done one of these seven series and
-
I have in this series and I have enjoyed
-
the feedback thus far some love some
-
hate uh but you're talking about it and
-
that's great so we're going to keep
-
talking about it look uh last December
-
last December I was watching some
-
sermons by Levi lusco and he was talking
-
about worship music and I was so blown
-
away by the sermon series I text the
-
team I'm like look we have to talk about
-
this in our corporate worship service
-
and they're like cool I'm like let's do
-
the whole summer let's just talk about
-
worship all summer long they're like do
-
you think people will hang in for that
-
and I was like absolutely I think people
-
will hang in for that so thank you uh
-
for proving me right for hanging in um
-
so the purpose of this study by the way
-
it's called the vocabulary of Praise is
-
basically we're looking at the seven
-
Hebrew words for praise in the Old
-
Testament um to give us a more
-
well-rounded view of what praise and
-
worship actually is all seven of the
-
words that are in the Old Testament they
-
they read praise like when you see them
-
on the paper but they're they're
-
different words they're nuanced words
-
they have a little bit of uh fine-tuning
-
uh of what praise should actually be
-
when you go and study the actual words
-
uh the goal for us in this series is to
-
learn that we don't have to take like
-
one version of praise and Hammer it into
-
every worship situation there are
-
actually a lot of ways in worship music
-
that we can Praise Jesus and he's given
-
those to us in in his uh in his Bible uh
-
we only have one word in the English
-
language for praise and so what happens
-
is naturally if you're raised in a
-
church uh you you start to develop a
-
definition of what praise and worship
-
should be and so as you grow older you
-
have that one word and that one
-
definition and if anything else comes in
-
and threatens that one word and that one
-
definition then you begin to kind of
-
push back against it so the the goal of
-
this series is not to take away the
-
thing that you think is praise right if
-
you like West Coast bethl Music if you
-
like Hill song if you like Old School
-
southern gospel if you like hymns only
-
with the organ like whatever definition
-
of Praise You have that's great hold on
-
to that that's biblical and true all
-
we're trying to do here is we're trying
-
to add to that definition of Praise this
-
is an additive sermon series we're not
-
tearing anything down we're actually
-
building things up so um we're going to
-
say a little prayer here and then we'll
-
get into our study for
-
today God first of all thank you for
-
being Sovereign Lord thank you for your
-
blood thank you for sending your son
-
Jesus to that cross so that we could
-
have hope and purpose and joy and life
-
Lord I Thank you that that you've given
-
us everything that we need that we don't
-
have to earn it God we don't have to pay
-
for it we don't have to clean ourselves
-
up and then come to you we don't have to
-
follow all these rituals and religious
-
activities in order to earn your favor
-
Lord you just love us with your Amazing
-
Grace and you proved it when you sent
-
your son to the cross and allowed him to
-
raise from that that grave three days
-
later and I just pray that that would
-
impact all of us today Lord there's so
-
many that are going through so many
-
different seasons of life right now
-
there are some that are suffering and
-
hurting and some that are going through
-
great times and so Lord just meet us
-
where we're at today help us to to
-
understand what praise is so that we can
-
give back a little bit of what you've
-
given to us Lord speak from your word
-
not from me in Jesus name I pray
-
amen talked about this last week but the
-
Westminster catechism uh defined the
-
purpose of life as to glorify God and
-
enjoy him forever so basically like on
-
your on your Tombstone you have your
-
birth day and your death day and that
-
little Dash in between that little Dash
-
represents everything you've done with
-
your life right and so what they're
-
saying is that we should live a life
-
that that worships and glorifies God and
-
enjoys him forever so if that's true
-
shouldn't we try to get better at the
-
thing that God created us to do if we're
-
supposed to praise then perhaps we
-
should learn how to praise to the full
-
right so so last week we talked about
-
this word in Psalm 149 this definition
-
of Praise which was Halal and it means
-
to shine to make a show to boast to Rave
-
to give light to rage to be glamorously
-
foolish which is what happened to me at
-
the end of the worship service because
-
Johanna was not here to mute my mic my
-
worst nightmare for 12 years has always
-
been to stand here during that last song
-
and have my mic not muted so that
-
everybody watching online hears me
-
singing like leading the
-
choir it's okay when I know like I can
-
kind of fake it a little bit but when
-
you don't know and I'm just up here
-
mumbling like I don't want to sing
-
directly to Matt's face right so I'm
-
just kind of mumbling for three minutes
-
but you know what I thought about it and
-
I'm like hey that's exactly what I
-
preached on right Make a Joyful Noise be
-
clamorously foolish I love Jesus so I'm
-
going to sing even though I'm not a
-
singer right so there's a time in the
-
church worship service where it is
-
perfectly okay to celebrate what God has
-
done we talked about Seasons so there's
-
a season for that there's a season to
-
not do that there's a season for somber
-
introspection as well right so last week
-
though we focused on this this uh the
-
sense of celebratory worship and I
-
challenged you to to not save your best
-
worship for for the club don't save your
-
best worship for the ball game don't
-
save your best worship for the concert
-
but come to church and worship Jesus and
-
celebrate the fact that he gave you
-
salvation like even in a church of the
-
Frozen chosen where you're saved but
-
like nobody's told your face
-
yet okay even in that church it is okay
-
and it is biblical to take some time and
-
actually celebrate your salvation
-
Dr Martin Lloyd Jones the the great
-
commentator of scripture said that a
-
dislike of enthusiasm is one of the
-
greatest hindrances to
-
Revival we talked about that last week
-
remember Michelle which was David's wife
-
King Saul's daughter she shamed David
-
for being excited about the Ark of the
-
Covenant coming back to Jerusalem and
-
his dancing Behavior we talked about the
-
older brother and the story of The
-
Prodigal Son that that stayed outside
-
the house and didn't go into the party
-
because he was so he he was so upset
-
that his younger brother had received a
-
Salvation that he did not deserve right
-
and we said that the reason that we want
-
to focus on celebratory praise is
-
because when you have praise in your
-
heart you have a sword in your hand so
-
there are seasons where we need to
-
celebrate and today's word is y it's in
-
Psalm 44 if you want to join me there
-
I'll go ahead and get all your sefel
-
jokes out if you want whatever yada yada
-
yada I I get it so just go get that done
-
now so as I say that word I don't hear
-
any snickering okay that's the word
-
yada and yada
-
means to worship with extended hands
-
like you're throwing a stone or shooting
-
a bow yada worship with extended hands
-
now here at sa Creek we like to base
-
everything we do on scripture so what
-
I'm going to do is build an argument for
-
worshiping with extended hands based
-
from God's word not from my personal
-
experience or my personal opinion so
-
this one is probably for some of you
-
going to be way outside your comfort
-
zone and if that's the case good there's
-
nothing wrong with that this is baby
-
steps you don't have to jump in and just
-
be like okay every song I'm raising my
-
hands that's not the goal the goal is
-
simply to add something to your worship
-
experience right so if you need to start
-
with a little T-Rex arms all right it's
-
fine try it out today I know I know some
-
some people in here would pass out if a
-
few of you actually did that um but
-
whatever this is
-
additive but I will say this I grew up
-
in the Church of the Frozen chosen okay
-
and this stuff was very uncomfortable to
-
me when I was a youth pastor and we' go
-
to youth conferences and I would see
-
people with their arms up in worship it
-
was shocking it was as a 20-some year
-
old I'd never seen it before and it was
-
just shocking to me uh I didn't judge
-
them I just felt kind of odd but over
-
the years I've I've begun to kind of
-
experiment with some of the stuff that
-
God teaches us to do in worship and I
-
will tell you this it does unlock
-
something in your soul when you worship
-
God in the way that he intends you to do
-
it in the appropriate way at the
-
appropriate time so Psalm 44
-
1-8 God we have heard with our ears our
-
s ancestors have told told us the work
-
you accomplished in their days and days
-
long ago in order to plant them you
-
displaced the Nations by your hand in
-
order to settle them you brought
-
disaster on other people for they did
-
not take the land by their
-
sword their arm did not bring them
-
Victory but by your right hand your arm
-
and the light of your face because you
-
were favorable toward them you are my
-
king my God who ordains victories for
-
Jacob though you through you we drive
-
back our foes through your name we
-
trample our enemies for I do not trust
-
in my bow and my sword does not bring me
-
Victory but you give us victory over our
-
foes and let those who hate us be
-
disgraced we boast in God all day long
-
we will praise that's yada we will
-
praise your name forever so at the end
-
of the song that they wrote they used
-
that word with the Hands Extended ended
-
we will praise your name forever praise
-
welcomes Heaven's power into your
-
situation it draws God to your table you
-
ever been at the restaurant where you
-
had to wait outside for an hour just to
-
get a seat then you get in there and the
-
server completely ignores you like
-
they're over there in the corner talking
-
you're like so hangry you're going to
-
chew through the table what do you did
-
you just sit there some of you would
-
because you're very nice um but for most
-
of us we don't just sit there do we we
-
we want some food we're hungry what do
-
we do we wave hey waiter hey waitress
-
come to the table bring us what we need
-
that's yada that's worship when your
-
hands go up God comes near now this word
-
is not just used in Psalm 44 it's
-
actually used 111 times in your Bible
-
Psalm 63 3-4 it says this my lips will
-
glorify you because your faithful love
-
is better than life how much better that
-
it's better than life so what do we do I
-
will bless you as long as I live because
-
at your name I will lift up my hands
-
Psalm
-
141 may my prayer be set before you as
-
incense the raising of my hands as the
-
evening offering Psalm 28:2 listen to
-
the sound of my pleading when I cry to
-
you for help I will do what I will lift
-
up my hands toward you where in your
-
holy
-
Sanctuary this is not something that
-
just charismatics do okay it's
-
not this is biblical and it's compared
-
to prayer the the same posture that we
-
take when we bow our head and and pray
-
is in the same verse where it tells us
-
to raise our hands and
-
praise Paul said this to Timothy in 1
-
Timothy 2:8 says therefore I want the
-
men in every place to pray lifting up
-
holy hands without anger or argument
-
Paul's like hey Timothy you want your
-
church to you know flourish and and do
-
well well what you need to try to do is
-
get the men of the church to raise their
-
hands in prayer and praise instead of
-
raise them for
-
fighting why would God tell us to sing
-
worship songs in this manner well my
-
studies showed me that 93% of
-
communication is nonverbal you got 38%
-
is your tone and
-
55% of your communication is done
-
through
-
nonverbal communication like body
-
language so for
-
example thanks a
-
lot
-
or thanks a lot a little bit of change
-
of tone but the body language right it
-
told you exactly what I was trying to
-
communicate you can sing all of the
-
right words at the right time but it is
-
your body language your posture posture
-
according to scripture that communicates
-
where your heart is actually at 55% of
-
your praise is done through your
-
non-verbal communication through your
-
posture through your body and that's why
-
God has so much to say about how we
-
should pray and how we should
-
praise If You're Happy and You Know It
-
no no no no no I knew you were going to
-
do that don't stomp your feet Don't Clap
-
Your Hands how about we do the one I
-
remember in my church we used to do
-
raise your hands right if you're happy
-
and you know raise your hands that okay
-
there's some happy people in the front
-
row so all the all the choir members
-
love this everyone else wants to fire me
-
it's all good look the this is a
-
universal sign for celebration think
-
about Muhammad Ali when you knock
-
somebody out what do his hands do a me
-
boom right I was watching a golf for the
-
other day he he he made the putt on the
-
18th and won the tournament he threw his
-
club and then he just walked around like
-
this like all dignified normally you
-
know he just lost it right because when
-
you celebrate your hands just naturally
-
go into the air uh some of you at that
-
Vanilla Ice concert back in
-
1988 what are you doing you raising the
-
roof weren't you I yeah I your lucky
-
cell phones didn't exist cuz you can
-
deny this
-
man when when you score a touchdown what
-
is the symbol the referee does let me
-
see it thank
-
you right why because that's a natural
-
response to Celebration when you are
-
excited you go yes your hands go up in
-
the early church it was really cool um
-
that when they had a when they bury
-
someone um they would put symbols on
-
their their tombs and uh that would
-
represent their their faith in Christ
-
right so like if you went to the Roman
-
catacombs today you could take a tour
-
and you would be able to of the hundreds
-
of graves that you would see you would
-
be able to easily identify all of the
-
Christians because of the symbols on
-
their grave sometimes they would put
-
things on there like a shepherd's crook
-
uh which signified you know being
-
carried into eternity sometimes it would
-
be a uh peacock feathers which would
-
represent um they drag their feathers in
-
the dirt and then they were raised to
-
life kind of like baptism uh you would
-
see a thing called nicku the little fish
-
symbol which is just an acronym for
-
Jesus Christ God's son Our Savior and
-
the one I like the best um Bradley if
-
you can pull that picture up this is
-
called an
-
arante it's on their
-
tomb what is it it's a stick figure
-
looking thing with their arms raised and
-
their hands out Palms facing the heavens
-
and this would symbolize somebody saying
-
that I'm at peace and I'm at rest don't
-
weep for me I'm with Jesus so I just
-
picture like Joyce
-
grave right that woman loved some Jesus
-
we're going to celebrate her life today
-
and I just kind of picture this cuz she
-
loved to sing and celebrate and pray
-
right I just pictured this on her on her
-
tomb somewhere with the the arms held
-
high just praising Jesus saying look
-
don't weep for me I'm with Jesus praise
-
God you know look this is the first
-
church this is the early church here so
-
if you went back in time to the early
-
church some of you would be shocked
-
because you would see people singing
-
These praise songs and their arms would
-
go up in the air sometimes not always
-
but sometimes when you ride a roller
-
coaster and you want to take the
-
experience to the next level I got a
-
million illustration I'm sorry this a
-
lot today I'm gonna be tired at the end
-
tomorrow um what do you do yeah what do
-
you do Cameron you put your arms up
-
right like it's fun it's fun just riding
-
the normal coaster but if you want to go
-
next level you put your arms up even
-
though they tell you not to keep your
-
hands inside the ride at all time no
-
don't have fun with it right see what a
-
lot of people do though they pretend
-
that they're in control on the roller
-
coaster look your little hands holding M
-
bars that's not going to hold you in if
-
that thing wants to throw you out I'm
-
sorry you have no control over that
-
situation you are at the mercy of the
-
roller coaster so you might as well just
-
let loose and have fun because this
-
ain't doing nothing for you same with
-
your relationship with Jesus we got to
-
admit that this world is out of our
-
control things are crazy and they not
-
getting any better and you can pretend
-
that you're holding on and controlling
-
things but you're not but you know who
-
is Jesus is he's got you so you can put
-
your hands up in praise and enjoy the
-
experience because Jesus is in
-
control in First Kings chapter
-
8:22 we have Solomon who's been through
-
a lot trying to build this Temple these
-
people have been Nomads forever just
-
vagabonds Wanderers they never had a
-
permanent place to call home a permanent
-
place to go to church and now this
-
Temple was finally complete complete all
-
the ups and the Downs they finally got
-
to this point so what does King Solomon
-
do he stood before the altar of the Lord
-
in front of the entire Congregation of
-
Israel and he spread out his hands
-
toward
-
Heaven Nehemiah finished the Wall in
-
Jerusalem the this city had been
-
ransacked and they wanted to rebuild it
-
and and the first thing you have to do
-
is build the wall so that you can start
-
building the interior of the city to
-
keep your enemies out and so this long
-
uous process was finally complete and so
-
Nehemiah calls on the prophet Ezra says
-
give us a word man so Ezra goes up there
-
and he blessed the Lord the great God
-
and with their hands uplifted all of the
-
people said aen aen and they knelt low
-
and they worshiped the Lord with their
-
faces on the ground remember there's
-
season for everything if your hands go
-
up sometimes your face needs to go down
-
as well so so life is full of ups and
-
downs but God is in control and then
-
when you praise him like this you're
-
saying thank you God for being in
-
control all right so you're being robbed
-
the robber pulls out the gun what's he
-
say stick him up right stick him up you
-
know why because he's exercising his
-
control of the situation so your hands
-
go up you're you're in a submissive
-
posture you're saying you you sir are in
-
control but then the police show up they
-
pull out their guns and they say put
-
your
-
hands where I can see them and put him
-
in the air right yeah why because now
-
they're in control of the situation so
-
now the robber has to put his hands up
-
because now the police have taken
-
control of the situation what I'm saying
-
is that when your hands go up it means
-
that you are submitting to an
-
authority a lot of you won't worship God
-
because you won't submit you won't
-
submit to to his authority because you
-
want to be in
-
control Jesus teaches us to
-
pray Our Father which art in heaven
-
Hallowed be your name and then he says
-
we want your will to be done on Earth as
-
it is in heaven and I just picture that
-
part of the prayer hands up God we want
-
your will to be done right now the same
-
way it's being done up in heaven you go
-
to school you have a question in the
-
classroom what do you do
-
Cameron two
-
hands but you must have a lot of
-
questions you're a poor
-
teacher you you rais your hand why
-
because you're in a situation you don't
-
know the answer you need someone with a
-
little bit more experience a little bit
-
more perspective a little bit more
-
wisdom and so you raise your hand and
-
the teacher comes to your desk to help
-
you with that situation
-
so when you're raising your hand and
-
worship you're saying God I I have a
-
question I have a need in my life that I
-
cannot figure out on my own and I need
-
you and your wisdom and your expertise
-
and your power to come over to my life
-
and show me what I need to do Psalm 143
-
verse 5 and
-
6 said I remember the days of old I
-
meditate on you and all that you have
-
done I reflect on the work of your hands
-
in verse six it says I spread out my
-
hands to you you see Psalms have little
-
tags you may notied in your Bible that
-
that tell you who wrote them or it tells
-
you the situation where these things
-
were written in the Psalm 44 the title
-
The Little tag there says this is an
-
Earnest appeal for
-
guidance this Psalm was written the one
-
that ends with your hands up it was
-
written asking God for guidance like I
-
heard about all the stuff you did before
-
God now I'm in a bad situation will you
-
please do this same things for me now I
-
I need to know what to do God bring me
-
some guidance it's like back in the day
-
you had the the rabbit ear ears you know
-
trying to watch the show your dad yells
-
at you tells you to go mess with the
-
rabbit ears uh kids are like what are
-
you talking about the dish the Satellite
-
Dish on the side is that even a thing
-
anymore I don't know I got YouTube TV
-
now so I don't have to mess with this
-
but basically you got to adjust the
-
antenna or adjust the satellite to get a
-
clearer picture that's what you're doing
-
when you praise when you praise you're
-
you're you're adjusting things I went to
-
the beach with my daughter Emery and a
-
storm blew up on us and it was like sand
-
blasting us like I looked 10 years
-
younger when I got off the beach man was
-
kind of nice but like we were trying to
-
get off the beach it just came out of
-
nowhere and so what did she do she grabs
-
her towel and wraps it around her face
-
I'm like how are you going to see where
-
to go and she just puts her arms up like
-
oh okay so I'm going to carry you off
-
the beach now I understand but that's
-
what you're saying to God you're like
-
look this this thing is out of my my
-
control I don't I don't know what I'm
-
being sand blasted by the world and I I
-
just need you to to lift me up and guide
-
me and show me what to
-
do
-
seada you you see your friend told you I
-
have a million of these I had so much
-
fun with this
-
one you see your friends and they're
-
they're way over there they they're over
-
there talking to somebody you hadn't
-
seen them forever you make eye contact
-
you're like oh it's Tom hey right like
-
how you doing come what are you saying
-
when you do this you're saying come come
-
over here like we've been apart for too
-
long there's too much distance between
-
us let's catch up let's let's rekindle
-
this relationship let's get to know each
-
other like come be a part of what I'm
-
doing here that's what you're doing when
-
you're waving your hands you're you're
-
stranded on a island and the
-
helicopter's going by just going to sit
-
there of course not Cameron's not he's
-
going to get saved good job buddy he's
-
going to wave his hands you know why
-
because he wants somebody to come and
-
rescue him from the
-
situation you're at the UNCC basketball
-
game and they bring out the T-shirt
-
cannons I love these bring out them
-
cannons right you don't just sit there
-
you want a t-shirt don't you you don't
-
just say I've seen y'all I go to these
-
games dignified men and women lose their
-
minds to get a a t-shirt with a big Bank
-
of America logo on the back of it it's
-
got like UNCC and like 12o font Bank of
-
America on the back but you will lose
-
your you will knock down children to get
-
I've seen it happen to get these stupid
-
t-shirts I I do the same thing um but
-
here's the thing when they bring the
-
cannon out and they look into your
-
section they're like who should I shoot
-
this toward what do you do you wave your
-
hands you're like me of course not this
-
little kid me send it to me that's what
-
you're saying to God when you're you're
-
waving your hands you're like I want to
-
bring God's power I want to bring Heaven
-
down to earth that's what I want blind
-
Bemus was trying to get Jesus attention
-
and the disciples were like will you
-
please be quiet you're being a fool
-
you're waving your hands you're shouting
-
the prophet Jesus does not have time for
-
you but did blind bardus stop of course
-
not he didn't stop he he continued
-
waving his hands because he wanted the
-
power of Jesus in his life when my son
-
was in ICU I car guarantee you I did not
-
stop waving my hands at God I'm like
-
look I know you got a lot going on but
-
this kid needs you and I'm not going to
-
stop waving my hands or bowing my face
-
to the ground until you show up and
-
bring Heaven's power down to my
-
situation think about it what's that
-
tangible act that you can do that will
-
make sure that you get God's attention
-
well 55% of your communication with him
-
is through nonverbals then perhaps
-
waving your arms saying here I am we'll
-
get his attention right and of course we
-
know God's always right there with you
-
but story after Story in the New
-
Testament shows people being persistent
-
in chasing after God sometimes he
-
doesn't answer you immediately sometimes
-
get this he'll put you on hold for your
-
own
-
good because he wants you to keep
-
knocking and keep asking and keep
-
knocking and keep asking and eventually
-
he'll give you what you need but that's
-
that that growth process of the knock
-
and asking that helps you build your
-
faith I remember the old commercial
-
raise your hands if you were that's
-
right some old folks in here with me
-
good that's like from the 80s I think um
-
worship it is is that it's most powerful
-
when you don't feel like doing it I hate
-
cleaning my bedroom not going to lie I
-
hate it it's my least favorite chore I
-
can't stand it I let it pile up and I'm
-
like oh I got to do it today and usually
-
I have to find a good podcast fast to
-
play while I'm cleaning or I just won't
-
even do it but after I'm done I I feel
-
kind of good about it because something
-
that was out of control has not been
-
brought under control you know I didn't
-
want to do it but I did it and now I'm
-
happy that I did it it's the same way
-
with your praise sometimes you you're
-
not getting that that that roller
-
coaster exhilaration from the worship
-
music I understand we we all have been
-
there we'll all be there again but but
-
sometimes when you don't feel like Jesus
-
has ever even came out of the Grave I've
-
had those days I'm like Jesus really
-
like are you really that did you really
-
come out of that grave because this day
-
is not going my way like bad things are
-
happen Jesus are you even there on those
-
days the Bible says that those are the
-
times that you should seek yada that you
-
should actually when you don't feel like
-
it you put up your hands in Praise so
-
Amy cudy probably one of the most famous
-
Ted Talks ever given um she it's called
-
your body language shapes Who You Are
-
she said that there's something that's
-
released into your biology when you
-
assume a powerful posture so she was
-
talking about like cell phones for
-
instance and she pointed out that like
-
there's nothing ever powerful about your
-
posture when you're looking at a cell
-
phone thought that was interesting then
-
she mentioned selfies though she was
-
like but when you're doing a selfie like
-
that's a powerful posture right shoot
-
the bow do the selfy you know that one
-
that one works but she so they did a
-
study they took a saliva sample of a
-
group of people people and then they had
-
one group get into a powerful pose for
-
two minutes and then another group get
-
into like a cowardly pose for another
-
two minutes and then afterwards they
-
gave another saliva sample and what they
-
found out is that there's a verifiable
-
impact on the levels of your stress
-
hormones with cortisol and such and your
-
testosterone when you either get into a
-
powerful position for two month two
-
minutes or a weak position for two
-
minutes and to prove their their
-
hypothesis they they did a study so they
-
had a group of people get in the
-
powerful position pose for two minutes
-
and another group of people get in the
-
weak position pose for two minutes then
-
they sent the people individually into a
-
room where they would do a simulated job
-
interview and after everything was over
-
the people that were conducting the
-
simulated job interview listed out the
-
people they thought would get the job
-
and the people that they said would not
-
get this job
-
overwhelmingly the people who took a
-
powerful posture for two minutes and
-
then went into that interview regardless
-
of it didn't matter what their skill set
-
was or their experience or anything like
-
that that posture alone those people
-
were the ones that were overwhelmingly
-
chosen to get the job and I think that's
-
why in the Bible you will not read one
-
command of God from God telling us to
-
curl up in a ball and sing praise songs
-
but 111 times you will read where God
-
says that we should raise our hands up
-
in Praise And what I love about C's work
-
is this is her final statement she said
-
don't fake it till you make fake it fake
-
it until you become
-
it even when you're not feeling powerful
-
worship like you are and you will
-
actually become powerful because God
-
will fill you with his
-
Blessing desperate times call for
-
desperate measures we're almost done
-
Psalm 44 remember how I had the little
-
little tags well this one was written by
-
the sons of
-
Kora in 2 Kings chapter 19 it was when
2 Kings 19 chapter mention
-
the song was composed and it was a time
-
where the Assyrians were going to take
-
Jerusalem there was nothing anybody
-
could do about it Hezekiah had the
-
northern kingdom had already fallen the
-
syrians were coming they they had
-
186,000 soldiers they were going to
-
ransack the people of Israel so Hezekiah
-
knew this was a he was going to lose in
-
this situation so you know what he chose
-
to do to get all the swords out and
-
sharpen them to Run to the
-
Hills no he told the entire nation of
-
Israel to worship
-
and that's when Psalm 44 was written
-
they composed this song in this time
-
where they did not know if they were
-
going to be able to even see the next
-
day and then in verse eight I'm going to
-
read it to you with the Hebrew words
-
inerted two verse eight says we
-
boast we praise the word is halal by the
-
way we talked about it last week so we
-
celebrate all day long 186,000 troops
-
are getting ready to come kill them and
-
their families and destroy their city
-
and they're like hey let's write a song
-
and we'll talk about how much we
-
celebrate God all day long and then the
-
next part and we praise yada your name
-
forever do you get that do do you
-
understand like they didn't know if they
-
would see tomorrow but they were
-
celebrating all day long and they were
-
praising with their hands up they were
-
yada
-
Jesus people were facing extinction and
-
they weren't trusting in what their arms
-
could do that's the whole point of this
-
song remember verse three it says for
-
they did not take the land by their
-
sword their arm didn't bring them
-
Victory but by your right hand in your
-
arm and then they said well I don't
-
trust in my bow it's not my sword that
-
brings me victory in verse six and after
-
they wrote this song and after they sang
-
that song in celebration with their
-
hands up you know what happened God sent
-
one angel I think it's so cool I always
-
wonder how powerful angels really are I
-
can't wait to meet one this sound
-
amazing he sends one
-
Angel and that one Angel wipes out the
-
entire Assyrian army in one night
-
desperate times call for
-
yada Psalm 88 you have put me in the
-
lowest part of the pit in my darkest
-
days in my depths my eyes are worn out
-
from crying Lord I cry to you all day
-
long so what do I do I spread out my
-
hands to you even when I can't see it
-
you're
-
working Jeremiah who preached to a
-
congregation that didn't want to hear
-
anything he had to say eventually and I
-
hope you don't do this to me they threw
-
him in a pit and they stoned him to
-
death because they didn't like his
-
message it's what his church did to
-
him you want to know what he said right
-
before he died Lamentations chapter 3:
-
41 it's part of his sermon before they
-
killed him says
-
let's lift up our hearts and our hands
-
toward God in
-
heaven praise in the pit but I want to
-
end with this thought I heard Lev alesco
-
say this word I didn't really know what
-
it meant he defined it for me he said
-
Absolution which means God has formally
-
released me from all of my
-
guilt I heard that word and it kind of
-
hit me funny I was like Wow never really
-
thought of it like that way God has
-
formally released me from all of my goil
-
he has given me complete Absolution and
-
I was thinking in Hebrews 10:10 it says
-
by this will we have been Sanctified
-
through the offering of the body of
-
Jesus Christ once for all time and then
-
I started thinking about the Old
-
Testament Saints and how they had to
-
like they had this ritual sacrifice they
-
would have to do where they take the the
-
two goats and they would slay the one
-
goat and they would put the blood of the
-
the goat on the other goat and they
-
would send that goat away from the camp
-
which is where we get the term scapegoat
-
from and they'd have to do that like
-
every year the high priest would have to
-
go do all that stuff once every year and
-
so then this new year would arrive and
-
there'd be like new sin and they'd have
-
to get new animals there'd have to be a
-
new sacrifice and a new death and it was
-
just over and over and over and then we
-
read in the New Testament that wasn't
-
even good enough to get them forgiveness
-
right it was their faith in the future
-
Messiah that was saving them the other
-
stuff was just a picture of what Jesus
-
would eventually do for them and then in
-
verse 11 it says every priest stands day
-
after day ministering and offering the
-
same sacrifice is time after time which
-
can never take away sin but this man
-
Jesus after offering one sacrifice for
-
sins forever sit down at the right hand
-
of God and by one offering he has
-
perfected forever those who are
-
Sanctified that my friends is Absolution
-
and that is why I have learned to raise
-
my hands from time to time in worship I
-
raised my hands because when my sin was
-
placed on the head of Jesus Christ it
-
stayed there once and for all so guess
-
what no more guilt no more shame no more
-
condemnation so when I sing songs like
-
we just sang and it reminds me of that
-
beautiful fact that Absolution that I
-
experience simply because Jesus chose to
-
give his life for me and I chose to
-
place my faith in him when I have those
-
experiences through worship songs I
-
cannot help but yah
