  2. amen are you happy to be in the house of

  3. the Lord this

  4. morning sounded like it when you were

  5. singing

  6. sounded great let's go to Psalm 42 Psalm

  7. 42 open your Bible right in the middle

  8. and you should be in the psalm

  9. somewhere just backtrack a little bit

  10. purpose of the study which I'm calling

  11. the vocabulary of praise is to help us

  12. to unlock new levels of worship by

  13. understanding the seven Hebrew words for

  14. praise in English we have the one word

  15. and so we've defined that word uh and so

  16. what we're trying to do here is kind of

  17. flesh out that definition help you add

  18. something to the thing that you already

  19. think is praise just add some stuff to

  20. it to help you go a little bit deeper in

  21. your praise uh I used the example of a a

  22. golf bag to to give you some more clubs

  23. so you have the tools necessary when

  24. it's time to praise God you'll have the

  25. appropriate tool at the appropriate time

  26. to bring God the appropriate praise

  27. after all the the purpose of our life is

  28. to glorify God and enjoy him forever so

  29. if praise is the key component to that

  30. then shouldn't we try to get better at

  31. our praise and the answer of course is

  32. yes we should father we pray excuse we

  33. pray this morning that uh you would be

  34. with us as we worship you as we serve

  35. you Lord as we gather together to

  36. encourage one another to good works I

  37. pray that you would meet us exactly

  38. where we're at uh Lord I know there's

  39. some heavy hearts in this room today

  40. there are also some people that are on

  41. cloud n so Lord I just pray that you

  42. would meet them where they're at and

  43. help them to use their distinct seasons

  44. of Life to Come Together uh to to lift

  45. one another up and to encourage one

  46. another Lord in the way that we interact

  47. I pray father as we read your word as we

  48. study the this Psalm that it would

  49. unlock something in our hearts that

  50. would help us to be able to Worship You

  51. More God it's my conviction that people

  52. are are are so caught up in in worship

  53. Styles and music and and presentation

  54. and the the whole idea of did this meet

  55. me did this hit me did it did it

  56. motivate me and Lord we we've lost sight

  57. of what the true purpose of worship is

  58. which is to bring you the glory that you

  59. are due God these songs are not for us

  60. they're for you and of course a a

  61. byproduct of that is that we're going to

  62. enjoy ourselves so much more when we're

  63. doing the thing that you created us to

  64. do which is to bring praise to your name

  65. so father as we work through this series

  66. as we study these words I pray that if

  67. there is any heart that has been

  68. hardened toward a certain aspect of what

  69. praise looks like in the Old Testament

  70. God that you would soften that heart

  71. that you would help us to see the the

  72. purpose the reason you told us to praise

  73. in these ways and Lord that it would

  74. just as I said before un lock something

  75. in us that will help us to be more like

  76. Jesus and to be able to interact with

  77. the world throughout the week in a way

  78. that would just draw them to the throne

  79. of God in Jesus name I pray

  80. amen Psalm 149 we studied the word Halal

  81. which means to boast to Rave or to be

  82. clamorously foolish and my argument a

  83. couple weeks back was that there is a

  84. time in our church worship service when

  85. we need to get a little bit Rowdy when

  86. we need to be a little bit clamorously

  87. foolish for God like David at the Ark of

  88. the Covenant we just got to dance around

  89. in our skibbies if we have to to to show

  90. that how much God means to us that even

  91. in the Church of the Frozen chosen where

  92. where like if your face would would

  93. smile it would probably crack you know

  94. um even in that church the Bible says

  95. that we should celebrate God now not

  96. always not not every aspect of worship

  97. has to be loud and and Rowdy but but

  98. sometimes in some Seasons it's okay to

  99. be excited about our salvation and the

  100. reason is because when there is pre

  101. celebratory praise in our hearts there

  102. is a sword in our hands now we studied

  103. last week the word yada which means to

  104. worship with extended hands and yes I

  105. enjoyed the feedback I got from last

  106. week's sermon some of you loved it some

  107. of you hated it but you know what you're

  108. talking about it and that's the whole

  109. point we're studying scripture together

  110. and so if we're a little bit stretched

  111. in One Direction or the other it is

  112. perfectly fine because that's what God

  113. does what what we learned last week is

  114. that our posture of worship actually

  115. matters the the way not just the words

  116. that we sing but the the way that we

  117. communicate those things the way that we

  118. sing them matters we talked about how

  119. God stretched out his arms on the cross

  120. for us and how we should stretch out our

  121. arms to God and praise and thankfulness

  122. for what he did for us because what

  123. happens when you do this is it welcomes

  124. Heaven into your situation it's

  125. literally like being at the restaurant

  126. and calling the waiter or the waitress

  127. to your table you know you're waving

  128. them over to where you're at that's what

  129. extending your arms in worship should do

  130. now we're going to talk about another

  131. word that's very similar to yada it's

  132. called TOA okay so T if you want to say

  133. it that way so T we're talking about

  134. this other form of of of worship with

  135. our hands extended but it's a little bit

  136. different than the one we talked about

  137. last week and I'll explain that in a

  138. minute you ever get a nail in your

  139. tire okay you you know when you got a

  140. nail on your tire usually right it makes

  141. a different

  142. noise you know you know something's

  143. wrong uh if you're a parent your your

  144. child cries you know like 90% of the

  145. time the cry is something you don't even

  146. need to worry about you just let it go

  147. because it's just a fake cry it's just

  148. an atten get and cry it's nothing but

  149. but then that that like one out of 10

  150. times this different type of cry you you

  151. know something's important happened

  152. right you know like they're in trouble

  153. you can just as a parent you can tell

  154. the difference between this sound and

  155. this sound you go to the doctor they get

  156. out the stethoscope they want to listen

  157. to your heart and your lungs they're

  158. listening for something that sounds a

  159. little bit off well in Psalm 42 that's

  160. what's going on like God is listening

  161. lening to a man who is giving praise and

  162. there's just something that's a little

  163. bit off about the song that he is

  164. writing so let's look at it Psalm 42

  165. 1-8 scripture says as a deer Longs for

  166. flowing streams so I long for you God I

  167. thirst for God the Living God when can I

  168. come and appear before God here's where

  169. it's a little bit off verse three my

  170. tears have been my food day and night

  171. while all day long people say to me

  172. where is your God verse four I remember

  173. this as I pour out my heart how I walked

  174. with many leading to the festive

  175. procession to the house of God with

  176. joyful and thankful shouts it's

  177. Reminiscing on a time where he got to go

  178. to church with his brothers and

  179. sisters and he says why my soul why are

  180. you so dejected why are you in such

  181. turmo oil put your hope in God he's

  182. getting a little pep talk here put your

  183. hope in God and I will still praise him

  184. to him my savior and my God I deeply

  185. depressed therefore I remember you from

  186. the land of Jordan and the peaks of

  187. Herman Mount Mazar deep calls to the

  188. Deep Roar of your waterfalls all your

  189. Breakers and your Billows have swept

  190. over me the Lord will send his faithful

  191. Love by day his song will be with me in

  192. the T night a prayer to the god of my

  193. life so CS Lewis once said that praise

  194. almost seems like a Inner Health made

  195. audible so you'll notice that when you

  196. come to church and you sing songs it's

  197. it's a good litmus test of where your

  198. heart with God actually is there's an

  199. audible difference between people that

  200. have a healthy soul and sing praise

  201. versus people who have an unhealthy soul

  202. and sing praise there's something that's

  203. just not quite right sometimes it's like

  204. a engine with a busted cylinder and in

  205. Psalm 42 that's what we encounter a

  206. person with a an engine that's not

  207. running correctly the sound is not right

  208. we encounter a soul that is hurting and

  209. the solution that this person Works

  210. through with their Psalm in verse 8 is

  211. that we should worship God even when we

  212. don't feel like it we should give God

  213. our song in every season of our life so

  214. to

  215. which is similar like I said to Y it

  216. shares the same root both of these words

  217. mean to worship with arms extended but

  218. but yada is more General it's kind of

  219. like God is good God did awesome stuff

  220. so I'm going to come to church and I'm

  221. going to raise my hands and I'm going to

  222. sing praise songs to him and then TOA is

  223. a little bit different it's more precise

  224. it speaks directly to how those arms

  225. should be raised it says that we should

  226. raise our arms with an arm of

  227. Thanksgiving and an arm of confession so

  228. a little bit more specific Thanksgiving

  229. and confession so in Exodus chapter 17

    Exodus 17 chapter mention

  230. we have the amalekites who are attacking

  231. Israel as Israel is venturing toward the

  232. promised land and so Moses gives his

  233. General his Protege his rightand man

  234. Joshua some marching orders he said look

  235. we're going to go to war we're going to

  236. have a battle I need you and all the

  237. soldiers to go down into the valley and

  238. fight the amalekites and what I'm going

  239. to do is I'm going to stand up on the

  240. hillside and I'm going to raise my hands

  241. above the battlefield and he says

  242. anytime my hands are raised you will be

  243. winning and if my hands drop then you

  244. will be losing so Moses the with the

  245. same arms of worship that he used to to

  246. raise at the Red Sea to part the waters

  247. is now standing on the hillside above

  248. the battle extending his arms over the

  249. battlefield so Moses is up top and

  250. Joshua is down below so the question is

  251. was there some magic spell on moses'

  252. hands did he have like some fancy gloves

  253. that God gave him or something like how

  254. how does his why are his hands so

  255. powerful why are these arms so important

  256. well the answer is they're not they're

  257. not there's no there's no power in Moses

  258. there's no magic in Moses but what there

  259. is in Moses is Thanksgiving and

  260. confession he's a simp symbol of Praise

  261. over the battlefield so the worship was

  262. actually the thing that was going to win

  263. the war did the did the soldiers have to

  264. fight of course they did they had to go

  265. to battle in this instance but the war

  266. was won with the worship that was going

  267. on on top of the valley see these arms

  268. they signified the two pillars of TOA

  269. which is Thanksgiving and confession so

  270. it's kind of like a a onew punch you

  271. know Thanksgiving confession right

  272. you're in a battle with with something

  273. and you you're like Thanksgiving

  274. confession Thanksgiving confession this

  275. is how you fight because remember your

  276. battle is not against your neighbor it's

  277. not against your president it's not

  278. against your boss it's not against the

  279. the kid at school that that bullies you

  280. because the Bible says the battle is not

  281. against flesh and blood your battle is

  282. with the spiritual authorities the

  283. spiritual Realms and you can't fight

  284. them the same way that you fight the

  285. flesh you have have some spiritual

  286. weapons and so what Moses is showing us

  287. here is you got a great spiritual Weapon

  288. It's a right hand of Thanksgiving and

  289. it's a left hand of confession so let's

  290. break that down a little bit let's look

  291. at the arm of Thanksgiving

  292. first God told us how to

  293. worship you don't need a a music and

  294. worship committee to get together in a

  295. back room somewhere and determine how

  296. you are supposed to worship God on a

  297. Sunday morning you don't need that that

  298. because God wrote down exactly how we're

  299. supposed to worship Psalm

    Psalms 100:4

  300. 100:4 says enter my courts

  301. with man that was not great let's try

  302. this again enter my courts that's Church

  303. enter my courts with than there you go

  304. that's better Thanksgiving in your

  305. hearts so some some of you are like I

  306. don't know why this isn't working I

  307. don't know why I Rel relationships are

  308. not working I don't know why my my

  309. career is going off track I don't know

  310. why my kids are crazy I really don't

  311. know why um I don't know why my kids are

  312. crazy I don't want know why I can't get

  313. along with my spouse anymore it's like

  314. everything seems a little bit off a

  315. little bit broken it doesn't sound right

  316. so what do we need to do we need to look

  317. to the hill above and what you might

  318. notice about your life is that one of

  319. your arms whether it be Thanksgiving or

  320. confession one of them may be dropping

  321. one of them may have already completely

  322. dropped especially the arm of

  323. Thanksgiving Eugene Peterson in the

  324. message translation of this verse I love

  325. how he does this he says enter with the

  326. password thank you so I I would maybe

  327. maybe deacons maybe we should put a

  328. little lock on the front door with a

  329. little passcode thing where you have to

  330. enter the word thank you to enter the

  331. courts just as a simple reminder that

  332. worship is about being thankful

  333. for what God has done in your life now

  334. we have to be careful here because the

  335. Bible never says to be thankful for the

  336. problem so you don't have to be thankful

  337. for losing your job you don't have to be

  338. thankful for cancer okay but what the

  339. Bible says is that we can be thankful in

  340. those seasons of life because we don't

  341. have to walk through them

  342. alone he says enter the church with the

  343. password thank you and then make

  344. yourselves at home talking praise thank

  345. Him worship Him so if you have this

  346. anxiety about like what's you're

  347. supposed to do in life what school

  348. should I go to what job should I take

  349. who should I marry you have all these

  350. these questions about these unknown

  351. things in the future well Levi lco has a

  352. good word to say to you he says if you

  353. do what God has revealed he will lead

  354. you in what he hasn't if you do what God

  355. has revealed he will lead you in what he

  356. hasn't so for instance 12 plus years ago

  357. uh you you all called me to interview to

  358. be your pastor and I I didn't know if

  359. that was God's will for my life and I

  360. was kind of freaking out about it a

  361. little bit because I'd never been a a a

  362. senior pastor I'd only been a youth

  363. pastor and so I was looking for signs

  364. okay I did that whole sign seeking thing

  365. and my son was like six and when I came

  366. to fill the pulpit one time he went to

  367. your your children's church and he had

  368. such a great time in children's church

  369. he asked if he could come back to this

  370. church the next Sunday so thinking well

  371. was that God speaking through the voice

  372. of a six-year-old boy to get my

  373. attention and then I remember that that

  374. week's lesson in youth group was all

  375. about Elijah at the W and how the the

  376. creek provided for his needs and I'm

  377. like hm sawers Creek provides for the

  378. prophet maybe God is speaking and then

  379. it was like the Holy Spirit just slapped

  380. me upside the head when was like what

  381. are you doing you know why are you

  382. focused on this thing in the future that

  383. you have no no clarity about what God

  384. revealed to me in that moment was just

  385. do the thing that God has called you to

  386. do right now and then he will reveal the

  387. future to

  388. you so we we spend time worrying about

  389. what what God hasn't told us when there

  390. are glaring weaknesses concerning the

  391. things that he has told us to do so in

  392. your Bible there's these sentences that

  393. start with this is the will of God for

  394. you and there's actually not a lot of

  395. them so you can go online right now and

  396. you can pull up a whole list people have

  397. categorized these for us and you'll see

  398. that that God has very specific

  399. statements for you he says this is God's

  400. will for you that you keep yourself pure

  401. until marriage this is God's will for

  402. you that you share the gospel and make

  403. disciples this is God's will for you

  404. that you accept him that you become

  405. saved it's God's will that all all

  406. become Christians so there's all these

  407. this is God's will for you so then we

  408. get caught up in this idea like should I

  409. go to this school should I go to this

  410. school but the the thing that God wants

  411. you to do is ask yourself am I sharing

  412. the gospel at the place I'm at right now

  413. see that's God's will so if I do that

  414. thing right now then the thing that's in

  415. the future that I don't have any clarity

  416. about yet it will reveal itself but I

  417. need to stop concerning myself about the

  418. future and focus on the present so back

  419. to the point God's will for you in

  420. worship is this 1 Thessalonians chapter

  421. 5:

  422. 18 this is the thing that we should

  423. focus on right now says give thanks in

  424. everything please notice the word in it

  425. does not say for okay people get this

  426. wrong all the time I just want to make

  427. sure doesn't say give thanks for

  428. everything it says give thanks in

  429. everything for this is God's will for

  430. you you in Christ Jesus how much more

  431. clear could God be when you entered the

  432. temple courts to sing praises to God you

  433. should come with an arm raised in

  434. Thanksgiving God wants you to raise that

  435. arm God wants you to not forget all the

  436. benefits that come with being related to

  437. God and a part of his family so Dr

  438. Robert emmans UC Davis he's a uh

  439. editor-in chief of positive Psychiatry

  440. he did a study where there were two

  441. groups of people that for three weeks

  442. journaled everything that they did

  443. during the week and they had two

  444. different requirements uh one group was

  445. supposed to write down five things that

  446. frustrated them every single day and the

  447. other group was supposed to write down

  448. five things they were thankful for every

  449. single day so they they put them in two

  450. different groups they called this group

  451. The grumpies and this group The happies

  452. so you got your grumpies and your

  453. happies so the the grumpies they Journal

  454. they did what they were told things that

  455. annoyed him it's probably easy to do you

  456. could probably knock that out by 9:00

  457. a.m. every morning right and then you

  458. had the happies over here and they were

  459. writing down things they were they were

  460. thankful for the results were absolutely

  461. astounding this group over here the

  462. happies it said they exercised one and a

  463. half hours more per week they got more

  464. sleep more rest more energy and had a

  465. 25% increase in their outlook on life

  466. literally the happies got happier and

  467. the grumpies you know what happened to

  468. them they got

  469. grumpier so the question is what are you

  470. going to post this week on your social

  471. media are you going to post five things

  472. that drive you crazy or are you going to

  473. post five things that you're thankful

  474. for that God has allowed into your life

  475. well that's up to you I don't control

  476. your social media but I will tell you

  477. this the Bible and this study both say

  478. that if you focus on the happy things

  479. the things you're thankful for more than

  480. the things that you're mad at that you

  481. will scientifically and spiritually

  482. become happier so if you want your

  483. spouse to be happier help them uh post

  484. Thanksgiving things instead of uh things

  485. that make them mad so why do you think

  486. God is like make sure your hand of

  487. thankfulness is raised on a Sunday

  488. morning because it's not just good for

  489. your relationship with God it's also

  490. good for you so what are we thankful for

  491. number one we are thankful for what God

  492. has done in the past let's go back to

  493. verse four of Psalm

  494. 42 starts out with I

  495. remember I remember this as I pour out

  496. my heart what does a psalmist do to fix

  497. his broken Soul he starts to remember

  498. the things that God has done in the

  499. past how often do we do

  500. that how often do you just like sit down

  501. and think about the time where you were

  502. baptized or when you were

  503. saved how often do we think about how

  504. grateful and thankful we are for the

  505. person that we're married to or our kids

  506. or our job or the fact that we can take

  507. a breath in the morning how how often do

  508. we take the time to just simply be

  509. thankful for what God has done in the

  510. past the psalmist says that's the way to

  511. a healthier life we had this story where

  512. 10 lepers were healed now leprosy was a

  513. a disease where your body would

  514. literally melt your arm would fall off

  515. your leg would just fall off it was the

  516. most horrific disease of this time and

  517. so there were 10 people that were going

  518. to basically just melt they they made

  519. them stay outside of town because it was

  520. highly contagious so you had these leper

  521. colonies where these people were just

  522. kind of melting together and Jesus went

  523. to the Leer Colony one time and he said

  524. he said you're

  525. healed and he touched them which was you

  526. know something no one else would ever do

  527. so he touched these 10 lepers they're

  528. instantly healed and it says nine of

  529. them went away and only one came back to

  530. thank Jesus and the most cryptic words

  531. that Jesus has spoken he says when that

  532. one comes back he says weren't there

  533. nine of you that were

  534. healed so that's the question are we the

  535. one that goes back to Jesus and says

  536. thank you for that Sunday school teacher

  537. that taught me the gospel thank you for

  538. that Mom and Dad Grandma and Grandpa

  539. that taught me about Jesus

  540. are we the person that goes back to

  541. Jesus and thanks him for the blessings

  542. in the past or are we the nine that get

  543. our healing that get what we need in the

  544. moment but then run away and act like it

  545. was all because of us so we thank God

  546. for the past we also should thank him

  547. for the future TOA is not reserved for

  548. acceptance

  549. speeches this is a a praise of

  550. Thanksgiving for what God hasn't done

  551. yet but will do in the future this is

  552. praising God by saying look I know that

  553. you are good I know that you're kind I

  554. know that you see me and know me and so

  555. right now my life is a mess but I

  556. believe God that in the future you're

  557. going to do some awesome things so Psalm

  558. 42 was probably written by King Hezekiah

  559. uh many believe that the sons of Kora

  560. was just his pin name for the songs that

  561. he wrote and we know he wrote Psalm 44

  562. and we're pretty sure that he wrote

  563. Psalm

  564. 42 and we're pretty sure that both of

  565. these Psalms were written at the exact

  566. same time when the Assyrian an were

  567. attacking his his people we talked about

  568. this last week there was no hope they

  569. were going to lose the battle and so

  570. King Hezekiah pinned Psalm 44 the angel

  571. shows up and kills all the Assyrians but

  572. also during that time he wrote Psalm 42

  573. because he was dealing with sickness we

  574. learned this in in uh 2 Kings chapter 20

    2 Kings 20 chapter mention

  575. King Hezekiah is sick and he's near

  576. death and so they call in the the

  577. prophet Isaiah Isaiah comes in to look

  578. at the king and he's like oh

  579. you need to get your Affairs in order

  580. and leaves that that's not great if you

  581. know Isaiah he's all about some Miracles

  582. and when Isaiah doesn't think there's a

  583. miracle left for you then your days are

  584. obviously numbered so he's like look

  585. there's nothing that can be done get

  586. your Affairs in order you're getting

  587. ready to go meet God peace I'm out right

  588. so Isaiah leaves and then when he leaves

  589. Hezekiah writes Psalm

  590. 42 he poured out his tadada

  591. he thanks God for what God is going to

  592. do see King Hezekiah even in the face of

  593. the prophet Isaiah had a belief that God

  594. was not done with him yet that God had a

  595. plan and a purpose for his life and so

  596. he writes this Psalm he gets to verse

  597. eight and he puts these words in there

  598. he says the Lord will send his faithful

  599. Love by day and his song will be with me

  600. by Night a prayer to the god of my

  601. life and that stopped Isaiah in his

  602. tracks we learn in second Kings chapter

    2 Kings 20 chapter mention

  603. 20 that he was literally knocked off his

  604. horse on his way away from King Hezekiah

  605. God's like whoa hold on I heard that

  606. Psalm I heard that T I heard that prayer

  607. of Thanksgiving this man is praising me

  608. for something that I haven't even done

  609. yet and so he stops Isaiah and it says

  610. here in verse 5 go back and tell King

  611. Hezekiah the leader of my people this is

  612. what the Lord God of your ancestor David

  613. says I have heard your prayer I have

  614. seen your tears and look I will heal you

  615. on the third day from now you will go up

  616. to the Lord's Temple remember what he

  617. wanted more than anything in the psalm

  618. he said he wanted in verse four to go

  619. back to that time when he was going to

  620. church with his brothers and sisters and

  621. singing praise to God he just wanted to

  622. experience that one more time but he was

  623. bedridden and could not do that so what

  624. does God do he not only heals him but he

  625. says look for the next 15 years you are

  626. going to get to go to church and praise

  627. God's name with all your friends and

  628. your family and then he goes on he says

  629. I will add 15 years to your life and I

  630. will rescue you and the City from the

  631. grasp of the king of Assyria I will

  632. defend this city for this for my sake

  633. and for the sake of my servant David

  634. both of his prayers for future blessing

  635. were answered because he had the G the

  636. nerve to raise his hands in Thanksgiving

  637. even in the middle of his sickness even

  638. in the middle of this battle where his

  639. kingdom was getting ready to be

  640. overthrown he had the nerve to praise

  641. God for what God might do in the

  642. future Jeremiah 17:

  643. 26 tells us that we need to bring

  644. Thanksgiving sacrifices to the house of

  645. the Lord you ever heard it worded that

  646. way

  647. Thanksgiving

  648. sacrifices I would ask you is your

  649. praise on a Sunday morning when you sing

  650. these songs is it a sacrificial praise

  651. Levi again says worship that cost you

  652. nothing accomplishes nothing Hebrews

    Hebrews 13:15

  653. 13:15 says therefore through him let us

  654. continually offer up to God a

  655. sacrifice of praise that is the fruit of

  656. the lips that confess give thanks to his

  657. name please don't think that God

  658. considers all of our praise equal

  659. there is actually praise that God

  660. doesn't approve of so you might think

  661. you're good because you show up on a

  662. Sunday morning and you stand up and sing

  663. half the songs and and when you do that

  664. you might think well I've done my part

  665. god is pleased with me today Friends The

  666. Bible Tells A very different story there

  667. are ways where we sing praises that God

  668. is not pleased with ever heard of Cain

  669. and

  670. Abel they both brought sacrifices to the

  671. Lord these two brothers and God rejected

  672. Cain's sacrifice and accepted Abel's

  673. even though they looked pretty much the

  674. same one was meat and one was vegetables

  675. but that was about it so what's the

  676. difference in the two offerings well we

  677. learned the answer to that in Hebrews

  678. chap 11 it tells us that Abel gave

  679. Praise by

  680. faith so we have to ask does our praise

  681. take Faith or is it just something that

  682. anybody could do which is harder in our

  683. country because in most of the world if

  684. you were to sing praises to God out loud

  685. you could be killed or imprisoned or

  686. have your your home taken away from you

  687. so in America we don't face that same

  688. struggle but we do face this idea of do

  689. we have the the faith to raise our hands

  690. in Thanksgiving for something that God

  691. hasn't done yet see I've been in

  692. churches where everybody is so chill

  693. they got their their coffee in the

  694. morning and they kind of wander into the

  695. sanctuary and they sing beautifully to

  696. to wonderful praise bands and but you

  697. can just kind of feel it in the room

  698. it's just something is is missing it's

  699. too casual it's too laidback there's

  700. there's just this element of sacrificial

  701. praise that's missing they're they're

  702. praising in a way where it's it's kind

  703. of like salvation's no big

  704. deal which is not the case right we've

  705. been we've been brought from Death to

  706. life not because we've earned it but

  707. because God sent his son to the Cross to

  708. give it to us so like every time we come

  709. to the church we should be excited to

  710. praise God for what he has done for us

  711. and what he's going to do in the future

  712. I love those people that it doesn't

  713. really matter how many people are at

  714. church or what the music sounds like I

  715. just love it when you go into an

  716. environment and there's that there's

  717. people that are just like I'm ready to

  718. praise I don't care what's going on

  719. around me I don't care what other people

  720. think if I'm if I feel like praising

  721. with my hands in my pocket my head down

  722. I'm going to do it if I feel like my

  723. hands of Thanksgiving and confession

  724. need to be raised in prayer in Praise

  725. I'm going to do that right because

  726. that's sacrificial praise that's not

  727. carrying what everyone else thinks

  728. that's only carrying what God thinks and

  729. God says that kind of Praise sacrificial

  730. praise that involves Thanksgiving that's

  731. the praise that God responds to so we

  732. thank God for the past we thank God for

  733. the future and we thank God for the

  734. present in verse four I've already said

  735. it they they're going to a festive

  736. procession in the house of the Lord it's

  737. called a pilgrimage so people from all

  738. over would come to Jerusalem to the

  739. temple to worship God and on their way

  740. there they would sing songs of praise

  741. before they even got to church anybody

  742. do that some of you do you tell me like

  743. you you got the I can hear you pulling

  744. into the driveway man you got the radio

  745. cranked up your favorite praise music is

  746. playing and I'm just like man that is

  747. exactly how it must have sounded on this

  748. way up this mountain to the temple the

  749. the praise of the people ringing out

  750. over the valley below see what happens

  751. is this praise reminds us of where we

  752. are going when you praise in the present

  753. it reminds you that you are an alien and

  754. a stranger you're a you're on a

  755. pilgrimage in this life you might have a

  756. house with an address but you're not

  757. from here once you become a Christian

  758. you you are in the family of God and

  759. your house your dwelling place is

  760. already in heaven you're just not there

  761. yet so you're on this pilgrimage to

  762. heaven and as you sing the Praises along

  763. the way it just simply reminds you in

  764. the present that you should be focused

  765. on what God is doing here and now and

  766. focused on the fact that no matter what

  767. happens to you that you have a home in

  768. glory that you're going to

  769. forever it just makes the stings of this

  770. life sting a little bit

  771. less so you got this arm of Thanksgiving

  772. and you also have this arm of confession

  773. see I told you it's not going to be all

  774. just you know flowers and happy times

  775. there there's a a type of Praise that is

  776. very healthy that involves serious

  777. matters like confessing

  778. sin Proverbs

  779. 2813 by the way I realized talking about

  780. Sin is not a great church growth

  781. strategy but we're not trying to build a

  782. crowd we're trying to build a church and

  783. so we're going to preach the

  784. gospel Proverbs 2813 says the one who

  785. conceals his sin will not Prosper but

  786. who whoever

  787. confesses and renounces them will find

  788. Mercy 1 John 1:9 if we confess our sins

    1 John 1:9

  789. he is faithful and just to forgive us of

  790. our sins and cleanse us of all of our

  791. unrighteousness this hand of confession

  792. it restores your relationship with God

  793. last week we talked about when your sin

  794. was placed on the head of Jesus on that

  795. cross it was it it was placed there and

  796. it stays there so there's no punitive

  797. charge for the Christian after the fact

  798. you are forgiven once for everything

  799. you've ever done and everything you ever

  800. will do forgiveness is completely all

  801. encompassing it is paid and full it is

  802. finished but what sin does on this side

  803. of your salvation is it damages your

  804. relationship with God and here's the way

  805. that works God loved you enough to send

  806. his son Jesus to the Cross so you could

  807. be adopted into his family through faith

  808. that's the ultimate love but then you

  809. mess up then I mess up then I sin right

  810. and when I sin it damages that

  811. relationship with God does he love me

  812. less absolutely not but I have to look

  813. at him and be like I messed up this is

  814. terrible I feel awful and that's where

  815. guilt and shame and all the things the

  816. devil loves that's where it comes from

  817. uncon

  818. sin and so what this arm of confession

  819. does is it it looks at God and says look

  820. you saw what I did I did wrong and I

  821. hate it so forgive me and let's work on

  822. this relationship let's restore what was

  823. broken Jesus taught this to Peter after

  824. he

  825. sinned in John

    John 13:10

  826. 13:10 says one who has bathed Jesus told

  827. Peter doesn't need to wash anything

  828. except his feet because he is completely

  829. clean you are clean but not all of you

  830. so we have we have Peter who is has

  831. sinned and then God is washing his feet

  832. and his head and he's like just wash all

  833. of me and Jesus is like you don't need

  834. to be resaved some of you you've been

  835. saved like 12 times because you just

  836. don't believe this part but saved once

  837. you're good one Faith one belief one

  838. salvation right so you got this guy's

  839. he's feeling kind of broken and he's

  840. like Jesus I need a complete bath Jesus

  841. Jesus like no your feet have walked in

  842. sin so you've put some distance between

  843. me and you but I can clean your feet

  844. right up and you'll be good to go you

  845. don't lose your salvation you just kind

  846. of broke your relationship with God and

  847. so Jesus washes your feet right so this

  848. arm of confession it restores your

  849. relationship with God and it also

  850. restores your relationship with yourself

  851. see unconfessed sin causes us to retract

  852. from God In Fear think about Adam in the

  853. Garden of Eden after he sinned they used

  854. to love hearing God Walk Through The

  855. Garden in the cool of the day and they

  856. would walk with him they were so excited

  857. to see God but after they sinned when

  858. God showed up in the garden they went

  859. and they hid because they felt terrible

  860. about what they had done they were now

  861. afraid of God see a healthy Soul one

  862. that's confessed its sin it doesn't fear

  863. God it doesn't feel a need to hide but

  864. sometimes as Christians when these lips

  865. of Praise during the week become lips of

  866. cursing lips of condemnation lips of

  867. Gossip lips lips that critique and tear

  868. other people down they become lips that

  869. do bad things then the next Sunday we

  870. kind of show up and we're not as excited

  871. to worship God because we're a little

  872. bit afraid of him because of how we

  873. spent our week and what the Bible says

  874. is that that fear splits you in half

  875. James calls this uh double-minded people

  876. so when you sin and you don't confess

  877. you have this part of you that has to be

  878. on watch 24/7 like man I hope did they

  879. did they see my browser

  880. history did they see my text history did

  881. my kids hear what I said did did my boss

  882. hear what I said did did the people at

  883. church they know what I've done and so

  884. you got this piece of you that is always

  885. going behind you and trying to to clean

  886. up messes and cover things up and you're

  887. constantly on the lookout so you're a

  888. double-minded person you're split in

  889. half trying to cover Your

  890. Tracks you're no longer leaping at the

  891. opportunity to praise God in his

  892. house and the beauty of this is when you

  893. raise that arm of confession you're

  894. saying God you saw all of this and I'm

  895. ashamed of it so forgive me and help me

  896. put myself back

  897. together Psalm

  898. 8611 teach me your way Lord and I will

  899. live by your truth give me an undivided

  900. mind to fear or being in a of your name

  901. isn't it awesome that no matter what's

  902. on your browser history no matter what's

  903. on your phone no matter what your kids

  904. saw you do no matter what your church

  905. family saw you do no matter what your

  906. neighbor saw you do that God is able and

  907. willing to forgive now look you're going

  908. to have some consequences for the bad

  909. choices you make you never you know

  910. can't fix that but he forgives you and

  911. restores you to yourself so when you

  912. raise that arm of confession you're

  913. restored to to God you're also restored

  914. to self and you're restored to other

  915. people the word toah actually also means

  916. choir praise never happens by yourself

  917. it's it's not a solo act and so Jesus

  918. says in the New Testament when you get

  919. together to praise not just take

  920. communion I always say this about

  921. communion but it's actually as you

  922. praise and worship on a Sunday morning

  923. Jesus says if you realize in that moment

  924. as you're singing praises to Him that

  925. you have sinned against someone else he

  926. tells you to go and lay your gifts at

  927. the altar and make things right before

  928. you come back to

  929. praise like don't let another second go

  930. by until you go to that person and ask

  931. them to forgive you for what you've done

  932. James 5:116 says therefore confess your

  933. sins to one another and pray for one

  934. another so that you may be healed

  935. there's nothing more healing than

  936. working out in a strange relationship

  937. with someone that has hurt you says the

  938. prayer of a righteous person is very

  939. powerful in its effect you raise your

  940. arm of confession you say God you saw

  941. what I did I hate it forgive me for it

  942. and then to the best of your ability you

  943. go to that person and say will you

  944. forgive me as well and if they choose

  945. not to that's on them you've done your

  946. part okay but you go to that person and

  947. and what's what God wants to happen in

  948. that moment is that they forgive you and

  949. you work on your relationship and you

  950. get together the next Sunday and you

  951. praise God together as a Faith Family

  952. restored to unified relationship so what

  953. we have is this arm of Thanksgiving

  954. where we praise God for what he's done

  955. in the past what he's done in the future

  956. and what he's doing in the present and

  957. on the other side you have this arm of

  958. confession that restores your

  959. relationship with God restores your

  960. relationship with yourself and restores

  961. your relationship with other people does

  962. it sound important to praise God

  963. taada okay two of you think it's

  964. important good I'm glad we didn't waste

  965. the last 30 minutes of your life all

  966. right 15 hours of study this week down

  967. the drain whatever hey can we get the

  968. praise band up here just for a minute ly

  969. and your team

  970. please I just want to end with with this

  971. final passage of scripture because I get

  972. I get how hard I mean I make it seem

  973. easy you know you just raise your hand

  974. of Thanksgiving you raise your hand of

  975. confession and everything just works out

  976. well that's not real life real life is a

  977. lot harder than that you ever go to the

  978. gym and do a workout where you just got

  979. even lightweights but you try to hold

  980. your arms out for a little while hold

  981. your arms up for a little bit even

  982. without weights just holding your arm in

  983. the air for an extended period of time

  984. is actually a very draining and

  985. difficult thing to do no matter how

  986. strong you actually are and I think it's

  987. a perfect illustration of what happened

  988. in moses' life in Exodus

  989. 17:

  990. 11 says while

  991. Moses held up his

  992. hand Israel prevailed so that's good

  993. news right as Moses held up his hands

  994. one with Thanksgiving and one with

  995. confession over the

  996. battlefield it says that Israel

  997. prevailed in their fight and maybe

  998. that's where you're at

  999. maybe things aren't going great but you

1000. look up on the mountain you see that

1001. both your hands are raised in praise and

  1002. you're winning it's it's V you're going

  1003. to have

1004. Victory but then it says but whenever he

1005. put his hand down amalec

1006. prevailed when moses' hands grew heavy

1007. they took a stone and they put it under

1008. him and he sat down on it so sometimes

1009. you're going to get to that part where

1010. it's time to confess or it's time to

1011. give Thanksgiving and you just are worn

  1012. out you're exhausted you can't do it I

1013. want you to know in those moments that

1014. God provides stability because Jesus is

1015. the rock isn't he you can build your

1016. house upon him you can trust him he

1017. won't let you down so they put this rock

1018. under Moses so he can sit down and keep

1019. his arms raised so that Israel could

  1020. continue to win the

1021. battle but his hands started to fail him

1022. again Moses is an old man this is hard

1023. for him to keep his hands up for for the

  1024. length of an entire

1025. War so Aaron and her

  1026. supported his

1027. hands one was on one side and one was on

1028. the other side so that his hands

1029. remained steady until the sun went down

1030. Jesus never ever ever called you to do

1031. this on your own it's why Jesus died on

1032. the cross to establish his church and

1033. yeah I get it you can watch online you

1034. can get all the content you want from

1035. pastors all over the world but there is

1036. nothing more important if you are

1037. physically able than coming to church

1038. because somebody on your left or your

1039. right might be hurting somebody might be

1040. wanting to confess or or give

1041. Thanksgiving they just can't raise their

1042. hands and your job metaphorically and

1043. even physically if you need to is to go

1044. beside them and lift up their hands to

1045. help them in that season of their life

1046. so that they can have victory in

1047. whatever they're fighting against and it

1048. says the the final outcome of this

1049. battle was that Joshua defeated amalec

1050. and his army with the sword

  1051. there is victory in

1052. Praise so I'd encourage you today do not

1053. let a single blessing go

1054. unthanked and do not let a single sin go

  1055. unconfessed
