  41. and

  42. again thank

  43. you that's H

  44. y'all it's a deep cut if you've been

  45. here about another round of applause for

  46. for God giving the talent to us to

  47. experience what we just

  48. experience hey thank you I was a little

  49. worried about that

  50. actually hey we're in a series called

  51. the vocabulary of Praise we're going to

  52. be in Psalm 98 today if you'd like to go

  53. and join me

  54. there goal of this series is to unlock

  55. new levels of worship by studying the

  56. seven Hebrew words for praise in the old

  57. Testament I want to give a shout out to

  58. Levi lusco for his series on praise and

  59. also for Chris Tomlin for his book holy

  60. Roar which has all seven of these words

  61. in it uh if you want to do a deep dive

  62. into every one of these words that's the

  63. book to pick up uh the first word we

  64. talked about of course was Halal which

  65. is what we just experienced that's to to

  66. to boast and to Rave and to be

  67. clamorously foolish about how much we

  68. love God look there's a time in every

  69. church service where we need to be just

  70. celebrating who God is even in a church

  71. of the Frozen chosen where it looks like

  72. half of you walked in here after eating

  73. a lemon like we uh it's biblical it's

  74. okay to to just let yourself go and be

  75. excited about salvation because we know

  76. when there's praise in our hearts

  77. there's sword in our hand we talked

  78. about yada yada means to extend our

  79. hands in worship Jesus extended his

  80. hands on the cross for us and so we

  81. should also extends our extend our hands

  82. in worship to him and when you do that

  83. it calls God to your table it brings God

  84. closer than he already is which is just

  85. an incredible thought when you think

  86. about how close he actually is to to be

  87. even closer to God is just a magnificent

  88. uh thought and then we have this these

  89. other words uh TOA TOA is just kind of

  90. the same but it talks about the raising

  91. your hands one with Thanksgiving and one

  92. with confession and when you do that

  93. it's like that one two punch that takes

  94. out your enemy and last week of course

  95. we talked about shabbach which is to

  96. praise passionately in a loud tone Tolar

  97. declaring the Lord's greatness over you

  98. as you prepare for a moment or a

  99. movement of God your your praise

  100. actually connects you to something that

  101. God wants to do in your life in the

  102. future or in the present it's taking his

  103. timeline and your timeline and kind of

  104. mashing them together so he can show up

  105. in a strong way before we uh get to our

  106. next word I do want to just take a

  107. second to to pray and ask God's blessing

  108. his his word

  109. today lord it's our our prayer that you

  110. would meet us where we're at that you

  111. would help us to focus on you and what

  112. you want to teach us today I thank you

  113. for these four words of Praise that

  114. we've already internalized you can hear

  115. it on Sunday mornings Lord just as I I

  116. sat back and listen to the people around

  117. me singing and it's just so awesome to

  118. realize that that praise can actually go

  119. up levels and Lord it it feels like here

  120. at saers Creek that our praise is

  121. continually Rising to new and new levels

  122. and we know when that happens Lord that

  123. you connect us to these great movements

  124. of God that that you want to happen

  125. right here in our church and our own

  126. individual lives and also for our

  127. community so Lord thank you for the

  128. ability to praise thank you for the the

  129. band and the singers and the leaders

  130. that that help us to enter into that

  131. state of Praise And I pray Lord as we

  132. dig even deeper into the words that are

  133. set before us in the Old Testament that

  134. you would just unlock new and exciting

  135. ways for us to be able to praise you so

  136. Lord thank you for what you're doing in

  137. our midst and I pray that you'll

  138. continue to work through us and in us as

  139. we study your word this morning in Jesus

  140. name I pray amen can you imagine a a

  141. movie without a

  142. soundtrack it's kind of crazy to think

  143. about no I realized they did make movies

  144. without soundtracks way back in the day

  145. but movies just wouldn't be movies

  146. without the score accompanying the movie

  147. the number one selling soundtrack of all

  148. time any guesses nope

  149. no bodyguard remember that movie Whitney

  150. Houston did the soundtrack of course

  151. that's why it's like the best ever and I

  152. I will always love you sorry I'm not

  153. Jake all right they never invite me up

  154. here I got more Don't Clap what about

  155. what about Titanic Titanic like that

  156. movie is nothing without the Selen Dion

  157. soundtrack like near far wherever you

  158. are you know what about Will

  159. Wonka o

  160. lo I got a bad feeling about you um what

  161. those are the lyrics by the way uh Top

  162. Gun would Top Gun even be a movie if we

  163. weren't flying through the danger zone I

  164. mean seriously like would anybody have

  165. even watched that movie probably not the

  166. the song made the movie Disney has built

  167. its Empire on music kuna mat right like

  168. they they they're billionaires because

  169. of the music music in their masterpieces

  170. look soundtrack Alters experience not

  171. just in movies but in real life as well

  172. Stephen Spielberg he said half the

  173. credit for this is a quote from him half

  174. of the credit for My Success should go

  175. to the music producer John Williams

  176. think about it

  177. Jaws it's two chords it's an e and it's

  178. an F but it made the movie John Williams

  179. is a legend he's done he's done home

  180. alone and Harry Potter and Indiana Jones

  181. and Star Wars Spielberg said you

  182. wouldn't know me if it wasn't for

  183. him for those of us that are able to

  184. hear life is not just about what you see

  185. it's also about what you hear and what

  186. you hear can change your life that's why

  187. this is the third most common command in

  188. all of scripture

  189. the third most common command in all of

  190. your Bible is to praise the Lord your

  191. God the word praise mean making music

  192. it's right there behind do not fear and

  193. pray to God so do not fear pray to God

  194. and praise the Lord your God with the

  195. word praise meaning

  196. music praise is worship through singing

  197. and we're going to look at that in Psalm

  198. 98 if you join me

  199. there sing a new song to the Lord I

  200. always

  201. wonder so so David here or actually we

  202. don't know the author maybe David the

  203. author of this Psalm was writing what a

  204. new song so this was contemporary music

  205. this was a modern song I wonder if at

  206. his church if he tried to to to sing

  207. this song which was inspired by the Holy

  208. Spirit I wonder if he would have had the

  209. same feedback that a lot of churches

  210. give uh to to new songs but here we go

  211. this is a new song to the Lord because

  212. he has performed wonders so what do you

  213. do God does great things in your life

  214. what's that Natural Instinct I'm going

  215. to if you're a musician you're like I

  216. got to write this down I got to make a

  217. song about this because God is just so

  218. good so sing a new s excuse me sing a

  219. new song to the Lord for he has

  220. performed

  221. wonders his right hand and His holy arm

  222. have won a victory the Lord has made his

  223. victory known he has revealed his

  224. righteousness in the sight of the

  225. Nations he has remembered his love and

  226. faithfulness to the house of Israel and

  227. all the ends of the Earth have seen

  228. God's Victory let the whole earth shout

  229. for Joy to the Lord be jubilant shout

  230. and sing sing to the Lord with the liar

  231. and the liar and melodious melodious

  232. song verse six the trumpets and the

  233. blast of the Rams Horn shout

  234. triumphantly in the presence of the Lord

  235. our King Let the Sea and all that fills

  236. it the world and those who live in it

  237. ReSound let the rivers clap their hands

  238. let the mountains shout for Joy before

  239. the Lord for he is coming to judge the

  240. Earth and he will judge the world

  241. righteously and the people fairly so as

  242. this author looks out to the distance

  243. he's saying well God is doing awesome

  244. things now and he's got this great

  245. promise for me in the future so I need

  246. to write this down I need to make a a

  247. new song out of this celebration

  248. Psalm 98 has been called the magnificant

  249. of the Old Testament the magnificant of

  250. the Old Testament which is a reference

  251. to Mary Mother of Jesus when Gabriel

  252. came down to her and said hey I got a

  253. mission for you uh you are going to have

  254. a baby you're actually already pregnant

  255. with the baby and guess what the baby is

  256. going to be the Messiah now think about

  257. that this is just a normal woman she's

  258. planning her wedding she's just a a

  259. teenager looking forward to this wedding

  260. day and then this Angel shows up and

  261. says says that he's got a mission for

  262. her and that mission is for her to carry

  263. the Messiah in her womb and Mary's like

  264. well angel I don't know if you know this

  265. Mr Gabriel but that's not how this works

  266. because I've never known a man first

  267. comes love then comes marriage then

  268. comes baby in the baby carriage right

  269. that's what she says to the the angel

  270. but Gabriel is like look the holy spirit

  271. is involved and when the Holy Spirit is

  272. involved the possible becomes possible

  273. so Mary like us is naturally looking at

  274. the the barriers and I believe that even

  275. if an angel like Gabriel came down to

  276. tell us what's up we would probably do

  277. the same thing she did and be like God

  278. that sounds great but you don't know me

  279. this is impossible for me you can't

  280. possibly do that in my

  281. situation so we need something we need

  282. something to give us faith we need

  283. something to help us see that the impos

  284. possible is actually possible with God

  285. we need something to to elevate our

  286. faith to take our our thoughts and our

  287. ideas to this spiritual Heavenly plane

  288. to give us a a heaven focused

  289. perspective and you know what God gave

  290. us to do that he gave us worship

  291. music because music elevates our

  292. perspective to that spiritual plan

  293. worship music gets our mind off of the

  294. the why this won't work and elevates it

  295. to a place of faith where we're like H

  296. if God said it then it can actually be

  297. true so Mary continues on her journey

  298. she goes to visit her cousin Elizabeth

  299. who is also pregnant in a miraculous way

  300. because Elizabeth was way past the time

  301. where she should be able to have a baby

  302. and when Mary shows up with Elizabeth

  303. and says hello John the Baptist the baby

  304. in Elizabeth's womb actually jumped he

  305. jump he he he even in his womb he knew

  306. the response to the presence of Jesus

  307. was to H

  308. and to yadada and to shabbach like he

  309. knew that he needed with his little baby

  310. head and his little baby toes he needed

  311. to Praise Jesus in that moment and so

  312. there's Mary and she she sees this

  313. happening and she's so overcome with the

  314. spirit that she writes one of the most

  315. famous songs ever written the

  316. magnificant and Scholars say that this

  317. magnificant was inspired by the words of

  318. Psalm 98 that's why Psalm 98 is called

  319. the magnificant of the Old Testament

  320. because it inspired Mary in this

  321. moment this Outburst of Praise that she

  322. just had to turn into a song this helps

  323. us understand our fifth word in this

  324. series which is the word

  325. zamar zamar zamar means to celebrate in

  326. song and music to touch the strings or

  327. parts of a musical instrument to play

  328. upon it zamar was in the heart of the

  329. mother of Jesus as she wrote this song

  330. as she carried Jesus in her womb she was

  331. so overcome when she realized that the

  332. impossible had actually become possible

  333. that she put pen to paper and composed

  334. this song a song based off of the words

  335. of Psalm 98 which in verse 5 says this

  336. sing or praise that's that's zamar okay

  337. so zamar to the Lord with liar with a

  338. liar and melodious zamar or song it's

  339. talking about music vocals and

  340. instrumentals coming together to produce

  341. Harmony and an expression of passion

  342. this word is used 45 times in your Bible

  343. and in English you're going to see it

  344. translated as sing song and

  345. praise isn't it incredible that the

  346. Bible tells us to worship with

  347. instruments I've been in churches where

  348. they think the drum kit is the devil and

  349. they think the the guitars are the evil

  350. one the enemy come to take them away and

  351. I just want to to remind you to look in

  352. your scripture because there are lots

  353. and lots if you think that way there are

  354. lots of examples in the Old Testament

  355. about vocals and instruments coming

  356. together to form worship songs you're

  357. going to see liars and harps and

  358. stringed instruments and drums and

  359. symbols and that's just in the Old

  360. Testament

  361. New Testament we're commanded in

  362. Ephesians

    Ephesians 5:19

  363. 5:19 when we get together as a church

  364. Paul commands us to speak to one another

  365. in Psalms like Psalm

  366. 98 like in hymns and in spiritual songs

  367. now notice this singing and making music

  368. Paul like separated the two so we would

  369. know that they come together as a a

  370. package it's not just about vocals it's

  371. not just Acappella it's not just about

  372. vocals and an organ it's about making

  373. music with your heart to the lord it's

  374. taking the notes and putting them with

  375. the words of the the scriptures and

  376. coming together with these beautiful

  377. songs that that raise your faith that

  378. take your eyes off of what's impossible

  379. and help you to focus on what is

  380. possible God commands us to take these

  381. notes and these chords and to blend them

  382. with the vocals in such a way that they

  383. create a chariot that carries Our Praise

  384. to Heaven do you understand music is a

  385. vehicle that carries your praise to

  386. Heaven it's this beautiful gift that God

  387. has given us to be able to thank him and

  388. confess to him right to to be able to to

  389. communicate with him not just through

  390. prayer but Al also through song there's

  391. just something special that happens when

  392. we gather together and sing praises to

  393. our god it elevates everything

  394. praise will change

  395. Destinies if you have someone in your

  396. life that is headed down the wrong path

  397. you may want to pay very good attention

  398. to this part of the sermon because it's

  399. your praise your zamar that changes

  400. Destinies music will soften a Harden

  401. heart Dr Martin Lord jodens shared a

  402. story about a man that was uh walking

  403. past his church on his way to the temp

  404. 's River to commit suicide this man had

  405. given up on life and decided he just

  406. wanted to he wanted it all to be over so

  407. he's walking by the church and at the

  408. moment he walked by the church he heard

  409. the people in the church singing Because

  410. the windows were open it was a warm day

  411. and so he hears these people singing he

  412. didn't hear one word of a sermon all he

  413. heard was the music and in that moment

  414. he decided that his life was actually

  415. worth living that he didn't want to die

  416. anymore this man went into the church

  417. and he joined the church and he served

  418. the church for years all because he

  419. heard the people singing praises to God

  420. praise music is a way of evangelism

  421. these chords and Arrangements they they

  422. demonstrate that there is an order to

  423. the

  424. world a lot of people think the world is

  425. just crazy it's messed up it doesn't

  426. make sense but these music is one of

  427. those few things that that brings a

  428. little bit of order to the world it

  429. shows you that there's some organization

  430. there that there's probably a creator

  431. here Leonard Bernstein the composer of

  432. uh many things but most famously

  433. Westside Story uh is not not a Christian

  434. not a Believer but he wrote these words

  435. about

  436. Beethoven he said Beethoven turned out

  437. pieces of breathtaking rightness

  438. rightness that's the word our boy has

  439. the real Goods the stuff from Heaven the

  440. power to make you feel at the finish

  441. that something is right with the world

  442. there is something that checks

  443. throughout

  444. that flows in its own law consistently

  445. something we can trust that will never

  446. let us down Leonard did not want to

  447. believe in God but when he heard the the

  448. things the compositions of Beethoven he

  449. could not help believe that there is a

  450. higher power that is organizing all of

  451. this chaos on Earth we see it in Acts

    Acts 16:25

  452. 16 verse 25 says about midnight Paul and

  453. S were were praying and singing hymns to

  454. God and the prisoners were listening to

  455. them so picture that we got Paul and

  456. Silas they're in prison they're chained

  457. up and they start singing hymns and as

  458. they sing it says suddenly there was

  459. such a violent earthquake that the

  460. foundations of the jail were shaken and

  461. immediately all the doors were opened

  462. and everyone's chains came loose do you

  463. understand your zamar is not just for

  464. you Paul and Silas were not just singing

  465. for themselves they were singing for all

  466. the prisoners that were around them and

  467. when they sang those spiritual songs

  468. when they made that music the chains

  469. fell off the doors were open the praise

  470. is earthquak bondage breaking Freedom

  471. making for you and the people around you

  472. so church let me encourage you don't be

  473. selfish with your

  474. praise you never know who's around you

  475. what what do they see when they when

  476. they look at you did they see someone

  477. that's like hey this this hymn is old I

  478. don't like this it's not what I grew up

  479. with it's doesn't resonate with me

  480. anymore I can't believe the worship team

  481. actually picked that one out of the hym

  482. book for this week is that what they see

  483. on your face or do they see someone that

  484. loves God so much that it doesn't matter

  485. about the genre of the music what

  486. matters is that there's somebody that

  487. that that loves you and is control roll

  488. in the world and and send his son Jesus

  489. to die on the cross for and and it

  490. doesn't matter what song is put before

  491. you you just want to sing you just want

  492. to praise is that is that what they see

  493. because here's the thing if their heart

  494. has been hardened to the gospel and you

  495. you may not know their story but they

  496. look up and they see you singing praise

  497. to God it will remind them like it did

  498. to Mr Leonard here that there is an

  499. order to the world that there is a

  500. creator that there is something bigger

  501. than themselves to look forward to in

  502. the future future it can open their

  503. heart for the presence of the Holy

  504. Spirit to swoop on it and provide them

  505. with salvation so don't be selfish in

  506. your praise because praise is not about

  507. you it's about God and you never know

  508. what might happen when you praise out

  509. loud so here's the deal praise will

  510. change your mood so maybe you don't care

  511. about that one everybody you know is

  512. saved they're all going to heaven it's

  513. all good but but you probably know

  514. somebody that's

  515. grumpy you probably know somebody in a

  516. bad mood go ahead and point at them if

  517. they're here no I'm just kidding make

  518. them in a worse mood we'll see if we can

  519. fix it up real

  520. quick praise will change your

  521. mood so if you're in a bad mood right

  522. now guess what music can change that

  523. specifically worship music can change

  524. that it's why we sing laas to children

  525. to help them fall asleep when they're

  526. fussy music changes moods and guess what

  527. that never changes throughout your life

  528. even when you get older music can still

  529. either reinforce a mood or change a mood

  530. we have this story in uh 1st Samuel

  531. 16 where King Saul is just completely

  532. overcome by what the Bible says is

  533. moodiness in verse uh 15 there chapter

  534. 16 it says so Saul's servant says to him

  535. you see that an evil spirit from God is

  536. tormenting you let the Lord command your

  537. servants here in your presence to look

  538. for someone who knows how to play the

  539. liar so I want to point out first of all

  540. that this evil spirit this bad mood Came

  541. Upon Saul because of the sin that was in

  542. Saul's life he stopped listening to God

  543. he stopped caring about what God thought

  544. he was just soaking up all the all the

  545. praise on himself his ego became massive

  546. and so this is what happens when you

  547. become all about you not about Jesus so

  548. anyway they they want to find someone

  549. that can play the liar whenever the evil

  550. spirit from God comes on you that person

  551. can play the liar and you will feel

  552. better so even thousands of years ago

  553. they understood the power of music to

  554. change moods so then Paul commands his

  555. servants find me someone who plays well

  556. and bring him to me and one of the young

  557. men answered I've seen a I've seen the

  558. son of Jesse of Bethlehem who knows how

  559. to play the liar he is also a valiant

  560. man a warrior eloquent handsome why'

  561. they have to throw that in there and and

  562. the Lord is with like David doesn't have

  563. enough going on like positive in his

  564. life he needs to be the handsome guy too

  565. come on man

  566. anyway David is just out there and he's

  567. just being David he's just a Shepherd

  568. boy taking care of some sheep and this

  569. dude he goes above and beyond he's got a

  570. lot of sheep and you know if a bear

  571. shows up it's it's one sheep you know go

  572. ahead eat the Sheep you know the lion

  573. shows up it's all right I got 99 more

  574. you can have the one that's not David

  575. David's out there in the field is a

  576. young man teenage boy and when the the

  577. Bears show up when the Lions show up he

  578. goes and literally fights the Bears and

  579. fights the Lions and protects his sheep

  580. when he's not risking his life for his

  581. sheep he is practicing his craft he's

  582. honing his musical skills he is

  583. composing Psalms he is writing music and

  584. he had no idea that that his making

  585. music like anybody would even be paying

  586. attention to him he he didn't know that

  587. people were listening to the things that

  588. he was putting together he he didn't

  589. have a record deal he wasn't on the

  590. radio I mean he he was just making music

  591. because that was was something that God

  592. put in his heart and when it came time

  593. to pick a musician to come and soothe

  594. Saul's mood they had no choice but to

  595. pick David because everywhere these

  596. servants went someone was saying hey

  597. David the shepherd boy the son of Jesse

  598. is amazing we heard him down at the

  599. waterfront the other day that dude can

  600. play like go get him because I'll

  601. guarantee he'll be able to help Saul out

  602. so just a little side tangent here if

  603. God has placed something on your heart

  604. doesn't have to be music but if God has

  605. inspired you to do something and given

  606. you a gift and a talent don't waste that

  607. work on it perfect it because you never

  608. know how God might use that gift to be a

  609. blessing to someone else so we have

  610. David and he's playing music to soothe

  611. Saul's tormented Soul it's zamar it's

  612. zamar and it

  613. works it changing what he was hearing

  614. changed how he was feeling

  615. so some of you you need to go home and

  616. you need to create a new playlist on

  617. Spotify you need to change what you're

  618. hearing because changing what you're

  619. hearing is going to change how you're

  620. feeling if you keep listening to

  621. depressing music about loss and breakup

  622. over and over and over if you keep

  623. listening to music that leads you into

  624. temptation over and over and over guess

  625. what your your life is going to go in

  626. those directions music has the power to

  627. pull you in so so let's balance some of

  628. that out and listen to things that are

  629. worthy of Praise let's get some worship

  630. music on that

  631. playlist this was so important to David

  632. that in S 2 Samuel 23 as David was

  633. working on his his eulogy he knew he was

  634. getting ready to to die he he wanted

  635. them to them to include certain things

  636. about him number one he said that he is

  637. the anointed of God of Jacob and number

  638. two he talks about how he meet the Lions

  639. and the

  640. Bears no that's not what he did number

  641. two he talked about how he slew the

  642. Giant Goliath and then had a raiding

  643. party to go kill all of Goliath's giant

  644. Brothers as well no that's not what he

  645. put on there the second most important

  646. thing to him behind being the anointed

  647. of God of Jacob was that he was a sweet

  648. psalmist that word is

  649. zamist he was the sweet the Marist of

  650. Israel yeah he he slew Goliath yeah he

  651. killed some bears and some lions and

  652. protected his sheep and did a million

  653. other incredible things but the two

  654. things he wanted on his in his eulogy at

  655. his funeral service was number one he

  656. want to give his dad a shout out he

  657. wanted to give his family lineage a

  658. shout out number one was he wanted to to

  659. point out that God anointed him but then

  660. number two is that he wanted people to

  661. know that he made music why because

  662. music changed people's Destinies it

  663. changed people's moods he understood

  664. that this worship music was one of the

  665. most powerful gifts that he would ever

  666. leave to this world and yeah we talk

  667. about all the cool stuff that David did

  668. but guess what when we read these Psalms

  669. a lot of them were composed by David his

  670. music his words they live on forever and

  671. ever and they are still connecting

  672. people to God

  673. today praise changes your uh

  674. possibilities Mary said here's what's

  675. possible with me never known a man can't

  676. be pregnant the angel said wait the holy

  677. spirit's involved so guess what the

  678. impossible is now possible because

  679. that's what the Holy Spirit does makes

  680. the impossible possible Right praise

  681. makes your soul be like all right let's

  682. go let's let's play ball you know let's

  683. do this praise music has a way of

  684. allowing you to walk out of this

  685. building on a a Sunday and just be so

  686. excited for the week ahead it it gets

  687. you ready for all the possibilities that

  688. are out there before you and things that

  689. you thought were absolutely impossible

  690. they become possible during our times of

  691. Praise 2 Kings chapter

    2 Kings 3 chapter mention

  692. 3 so the king of Israel the king of

  693. Judah and the king of Edom set out after

  694. they had traveled their indirect route

  695. for seven days they had no water for the

  696. Army or the animals with them they were

  697. going to die of dehydration then the

  698. king of Israel said oh no the Lord has

  699. summoned these three kings only to hand

  700. them over to Moab so to make things

  701. worse the moabites were getting ready to

  702. close in and Destroy them but then

  703. josaphat said isn't there a Prophet of

  704. the Lord here he's like what is this a

  705. nonprofit anyway

  706. um you're welcome I'm a dad I'm allowed

  707. let's inquire of the Lord through him

  708. and then one of the servants is like

  709. yeah but that's Elisha sha the son of

  710. shifat who used to pour water on

  711. Elijah's hands he's the one that's here

  712. in other words Elijah ain't here we got

  713. Elisha and Elisha is just the dude that

  714. pours water on the hands of the Prophet

  715. he's just the servant to the prophet

  716. kind of reminds me of how people were

  717. like that's just David he's just the

  718. shepherd boy he can't possibly be the

  719. king of Israel but here's the thing Levi

  720. aluska points out if you're too big to

  721. serve you're too small to lead another a

  722. little sad note but if you're too big to

  723. serve if you're too big to be the Elisha

  724. then you're too small to lead but here's

  725. what happened Jehosaphat affirmed the

  726. word of the Lord is with him he is a

  727. prophet so the king of Israel and

  728. Jehosaphat the king of Edom they went to

  729. him however Elisha said to the king of

  730. Jo joram of Israel what do we have in

  731. common go to the prophets of your father

  732. and your mother because they had kind of

  733. turned their back on on God and raised

  734. up their own prophets who weren't really

  735. prophets but the king of Israel replied

  736. no because it is the Lord who has

  737. summoned these three kings to hand them

  738. over to Moab so we need your help Elijah

  739. responded by the life of the Lord of

  740. armies before whom I stand if I did not

  741. respect King Jehosaphat of Judah I

  742. wouldn't even look at

  743. you I would not even take notice of you

  744. then in verse

  745. 15 what's he do he says now bring me a

  746. warrior bring me a soldier bring me an

  747. Army we'll fix this thing no what does

  748. he say he says now verse 15 bring me a

  749. musician and while the musician played

  750. the Lord's hand came on

  751. Elisha Elisha needed to switch

  752. frequencies in order to hear from the

  753. Lord he was a little Disturbed he was a

  754. little fired up he's in a presence of

  755. somebody that he doesn't respect and

  756. really doesn't want to help so he's kind

  757. of in a bad mood himself and sometimes

  758. when you get that way it's really hard

  759. to hear from the Lord so he needs a a

  760. change of fre quencies he's frustrated

  761. so what does he do he calls for clarity

  762. he calls for a new signal he calls for a

  763. musician this is something that God

  764. commands all of us to do he commands us

  765. to praise him and when you praise Him lo

  766. and behold guess what happens you hear

  767. more clearly from God this praise music

  768. gets your heart ready to receive a

  769. message from God this is not just old

  770. church tradition that we sing and then

  771. we preach no no this is how God

  772. organized worship to work from the very

  773. beginning of time you get the musicians

  774. they make the music you listen to the

  775. words it opens your heart and then the

  776. pastor or the prophet presents the

  777. message the word of God sometimes God

  778. just shows up in the Holy Spirit and

  779. speaks directly to us not even from his

  780. word but that's how the pattern

  781. works these songs get us ready they help

  782. us be more receptive in our hearts and

  783. so Elijah hears from God and God says

  784. tell them to dig some ditches now

  785. imagine that you and all of your animals

  786. are you're completely out of water and

  787. you're going to die of

  788. dehydration so in the middle of the day

  789. what's the last thing you want to go

  790. do dig ditches I work with the

  791. Brotherhood that's all they ever let me

  792. do is dig holes post hole diggers all I

  793. ever get to do like five minutes of that

  794. and I'm done for the day can you imag

  795. imagine you have no water I got I drink

  796. like six Gatorades when I'm with them

  797. they had none of that they had no water

  798. and God's like hey dig ditches it's a

  799. test of their faith but when you're

  800. praising you hear God very clearly so

  801. there's no pushback here because

  802. everybody heard the word of God the

  803. musician laid the soundtrack and they

  804. heard God's word very clearly that they

  805. should dig ditches and so what do they

  806. do they go and they dig the

  807. ditches Matthew Henry says those who

  808. expect God's blessings must prepare room

  809. for

  810. them so isn't it awesome that when you

  811. pray is that zamar it just snaps you out

  812. of the fog and brings your blessings

  813. into Focus so you can prepare for them

  814. because see God knew something that they

  815. didn't know and that was that a big

  816. storm was coming and when that storm

  817. came it filled those ditches with water

  818. and they were the only ones that had the

  819. water so when the battle began those

  820. soldiers were refreshed and ready to

  821. fight because they had prepared their

  822. hearts to receive the blessing that God

  823. had for

  824. them think of the great hymn the things

  825. of Earth will grow strangely dim in the

  826. light of his glories and

  827. Grace when you praise it just lifts the

  828. fog and helps you see clearly what God

  829. is saying to you and your church and

  830. your Community Praise gets us pumped I

  831. got a Bono quote but you didn't know

  832. you'd get that today we got Selen on

  833. Whitney Houston and Bono in the same

  834. sermon you're

  835. lucky in the dressing room before the

  836. show we would read the Psalms as a band

  837. and then walk out into the Arenas and

  838. stadiums the word igniting us and

  839. inspiring us psyched or pumped that

  840. means a change of

  841. expectation the word of God through the

  842. music of God changes your expectations

  843. they did a study of uh at one of these

  844. big universities

  845. and and they had these people look at

  846. faces on the screen like real fast they

  847. would just like go up and they'd be gone

  848. and they'd have to write down was that

  849. was that face frowning or smiling then

  850. they did the same study with the same

  851. people in the exact same way except they

  852. had music playing in the background as

  853. they were looking at the screen and

  854. overwhelmingly even when the faces were

  855. frowning people were reporting that the

  856. faces were actually smiling because the

  857. music had changed something within them

  858. it had changed their expectations

  859. and what they found is that music can

  860. change the way that you view your

  861. life so isn't it so fitting that the

  862. first day of the week God says hey on

  863. the morning of the first day of the week

  864. how about you all get together and sing

  865. some praises to me so that I can change

  866. your expectations for the week is that

  867. incredible we didn't need a study to

  868. show us that did we no God showed us

  869. that Martin Luther said next to the the

  870. the reformer he said next to the word of

  871. God music deserves the highest praise

  872. for whether you wish to comfort the sad

  873. to terrify the happy to encourage the

  874. despairing to Humble the proud to calm

  875. the passionate or to appease those full

  876. of hate what more effective means than

  877. music could you ever

  878. find God is worthy of Praise he is

  879. worthy of all the hard work that our

  880. musicians in our choir put get put

  881. during the weeks to lead up to the

  882. worship Services he is worthy of the old

  883. songs he's wor worthy of the modern

  884. songs he's worthy of the songs that

  885. haven't even been written yet God I'm

  886. going to sing to you because I need

  887. perspective for my experiences that I'll

  888. be having this week look my expectations

  889. come from the soundtrack of

  890. creation did you know there was a

  891. soundtrack at creation while God was

  892. making the world there was actually

  893. music playing in the background it says

  894. in Job chapter

    Job 38 chapter mention

  895. 38 God speaks in verse 4 through six

  896. about questioning job where were you

  897. when I did this where were you when I

  898. made this and then in verse 7 he says

  899. while the morning Stars sang together

  900. and all the sons of God shouted for

  901. Joy the stars and the Angels were

  902. singing as God created the world that we

  903. live

  904. on Leonard Bernstein says good music is

  905. the stuff of heaven right it's the good

  906. stuff it's what Boven had praise takes

  907. our thoughts to to angels and stars that

  908. connects us to the Heavenly realms in a

  909. an incredible way there was a soundtrack

  910. to the to the past but there's also a

  911. soundtrack to our future which is what

  912. Psalm 98 was teaching us that praise

  913. allows us to step into the future allows

  914. us to see where we're headed it gives us

  915. hope for for heaven as the psalmist said

  916. in the end of the psalm there's a day

  917. where the judge is coming and the judge

  918. is going to judge justly and that's good

  919. news for us that have given our life

  920. over to Jesus

  921. I spoke about Jaws earlier but in that

  922. that movie the the shark was actually

  923. broke for the entire creation of that

  924. movie they they built this shark that

  925. was supposed to do all this neat stuff

  926. in the water and his name was Bruce and

  927. uh Bruce never worked so they had to

  928. come up with the plan B because they

  929. didn't have an unlimited budget at that

  930. time and so they're like well what what

  931. do we do and there and step Spur's like

  932. okay I got it never show the shark until

  933. the very end the only thing that you

  934. ever really see of of the the original

  935. shark is that those those moments when

  936. the music plays that dut dut right and

  937. it's it's so crazy because it actually

  938. made the movie a 100 times scarier than

  939. if you saw that janky shark that they

  940. had built originally it would have

  941. ruined all the suspension of disbelief

  942. and probably killed the film but because

  943. the shark never showed up your

  944. imagination fills in all of the the

  945. voids right music evokes your

  946. imagination

  947. and it makes us think about how one day

  948. the songs we sing help connect us to a

  949. day where there's no more glitch in the

  950. system no more janky

  951. shark what we have is death no more

  952. death and no more disease no more ugly

  953. we we see the lion laying down with the

  954. lamb it it changes our expectations of

  955. where we're headed because you can get

  956. through today if you know that you know

  957. next week is going to be nothing but

  958. Paradise zamar is our past reminding us

  959. where we came from and it's also a

  960. prophetic experience pointing to where

  961. we are headed and this helps us overcome

  962. the negative side of human

  963. expectations we see walls Jesus sees

  964. opportunity but when I was younger uh

  965. music was very important to my

  966. upbringing because I I struggled with a

  967. lot of things like most people do uh

  968. fear of man being one of them I was kind

  969. of shy I was definitely not a confident

  970. person and so there were times at night

  971. where I would lay there and just not

  972. want to go anywhere the next day uh

  973. because I just didn't want to be around

  974. people so I was kind of I was scared I

  975. was scared a lot and one of the things

  976. that changed my life is when my mom and

  977. dad got me a boom box that I wish I

  978. still had because now they sell for like

  979. 500 bucks on eBay um like a legit boom

  980. box like you know the break dancers

  981. would carry you know I had one of those

  982. in my room and it was so cool because it

  983. had it had a tape thing in it like tape

  984. deck and I could play tapes and so I I

  985. went to the store and my youth pastor

  986. recommended uh DC Talk

  987. anybody down with the DC Talk right all

  988. right so um all right so now it's a

  989. little bit embarrassing but then it was

  990. cool it was all right and so I got that

  991. that tape and I started playing some of

  992. those songs like Jesus Freak and stuff

  993. and and it was weird because every time

  994. I would play those those Christian tapes

  995. it it just something changed inside my

  996. soul it didn't really matter how cheesy

  997. the music was there was just something

  998. that gave me confidence and now as an

  999. older person I realized that was God

  1000. changing my expectations
