  35. father God we we thank you for your hand

  36. of blessing we are not blind to the fact

  37. that your hand of favor is upon saus

  38. Creek Baptist Church right now and Lord

  39. we know that we've done absolutely

  40. nothing to earn it but you have given it

  41. to us graciously and mercifully and so

  42. Lord we accept what you're doing the the

  43. Revival that you have started in this

  44. place in this community and we pray that

  45. it would spread from not only here but

  46. every Christian Church that is preaching

  47. the gospel this morning we ask that

  48. Hearts would be changed and lives would

  49. be changed and Lord that we would all

  50. all leave our our places of worship

  51. looking more and more like Jesus Christ

  52. every single day Lord we thank you for

  53. the the many gifts and talents that

  54. you've placed in this assembly Lord we

  55. know that this is the body of Christ and

  56. that every part has a purpose and we

  57. just thank you that you've given us so

  58. many people that are willing and humble

  59. enough to use their gifts and talents to

  60. the betterment of your kingdom and I

  61. pray Lord as we study your word today

  62. that it would impact our hearts in a

  63. great way in Jesus name I pray amen

  64. starting a new series today called truth

  65. bomb uh this is

  66. uh something I've had a passion about

  67. for many years uh discovering what truth

  68. is and how to communicate truth with

  69. people and the main idea of this

  70. specific sermon series for this month is

  71. that there are so many beliefs in our

  72. culture today that that feel true and

  73. they they sound true but they're just

  74. not true so I wanted to do a five-part

  75. series talking about about Truth where

  76. it comes from and how it impacts our

  77. lives and the the sermon title came from

  78. something my youth group students used

  79. to do way back in the day when I was a

  80. youth pastor they would have these

  81. things called Truth bombs I don't know

  82. if you remember those or not but it was

  83. always the middle school kids because

  84. they're the worst um they were always uh

  85. they were always trying to tear me down

  86. and so they would come up to me and

  87. they'd be like PK and they I'd be like

  88. what and they're like got a truth bomb

  89. for you and they would be they would say

  90. something like wrestling is for nerds

  91. like that

  92. and they'd say something like Michael

  93. Jordan isn't the greatest of all time or

  94. they would say like Taco Bell is

  95. overrated I'd be like hold me back hold

  96. me back Susan I'm going in I'm going to

  97. be doing prison ministry from the inside

  98. this kid is going down right often times

  99. I would use that as a a teaching

  100. mechanism to uh uh teach them that

  101. there's a difference between truth and

  102. perspective

  103. perspective is very different than truth

  104. so so what is truth that's a very good

  105. question and it's actually a question

  106. that Pontius Pilate ask Jesus right

  107. before Jesus went to the Cross so if you

  108. join me in John

    John 18:37

  109. 18:37 saponas is talking to Jesus and he

  110. said you are a king then pilot asked

  111. Jesus says you say that I am a king I

  112. was born for this and I've come into

  113. this world for this to testify to the

  114. truth everyone who is of the truth

  115. listens to my voice pilot says what is

  116. truth very important question what is

  117. truth well by definition truth is

  118. absolute it is constant it is true for

  119. everyone everywhere at all times truth

  120. is not perspective because perspectives

  121. vary so if you confuse use truth with

  122. perspective then truth becomes

  123. subjective and subjective truth changes

  124. over time so subjective truth would say

  125. that like wrestling is for nerds well

  126. that's your perspective or that Michael

  127. Jordan is not the greatest of all time

  128. that's your perspective or that Taco

  129. Bell is overrated well that one's

  130. actually absolute truth so that doesn't

  131. really count but um it is very overrated

  132. uh subjective truth says that it can be

  133. true to me and something else can be

  134. true to you and that's cool because

  135. truth is relative so subjective truth

  136. leans toward the individual needs and

  137. wants of a person which uhoh that means

  138. that subjective truth is determined to

  139. be true by the individual relative to

  140. the individual's context oh no that

  141. means that if something sounds right to

  142. you or something feels right to you then

  143. it must be true so now we have a culture

  144. that is built on the individual wants

  145. and desires of those that are in the

  146. most influential positions in our

  147. society that's why we get these

  148. unhelpful phrases like speak your truth

  149. and live your truth and Own Your Truth

  150. friends have you ever stopped to ask

  151. yourself this what if your truth is

  152. actually a trap what if your truth is

  153. actually not beneficial for you you or

  154. the community that you live

  155. in well Proverbs 14:12 illustrates

    Proverbs 14:12

  156. exactly

  157. that God tells us there's a way that

  158. seems right to a person but its end is

  159. the way to death there's a way that

  160. seems right to a person but in the end

  161. it is a way to death so for centuries

  162. people believed that the sun rotated

  163. around the earth and that the Earth was

  164. flat and now thanks to modern science a

  165. lot of people believe that the Earth

  166. rotates around the Sun and it's actually

  167. a sphere so let me put it this way what

  168. if someone came up to you and was like I

  169. Feel Like a Surgeon today and you're

  170. like well have you ever performed

  171. surgery and they're like no but I Feel

  172. Like a Surgeon I believe that I am a

  173. surgeon therefore I am a surgeon would

  174. you let that person perform surgery on

  175. you I hope not right so just because you

  176. believe it doesn't make it true so

  177. here's that's the truth bomb just

  178. because you believe it does not make it

  179. true okay just because you believe it

  180. doesn't make it true some of you're like

  181. why did we come to church today I don't

  182. know he's just going to yell at us this

  183. is good for

  184. you and you might say well PK we're

  185. encouraged to follow our hearts every

  186. Hallmark movie says the same thing

  187. follow follow your heart and sounds

  188. great it really does I agree however

  189. Jeremiah

  190. 179 the heart is more deceitful than

  191. anything else like it's in a class of

  192. its own and it's incurable who can

  193. actually understand it look no one is

  194. trying to downplay your your perspective

  195. but God loves you enough to tell you the

  196. truth and the truth is if you rely

  197. solely on your feelings to determine

  198. truth then you're in trouble because

  199. your feelings are really good at lying

  200. to you has anybody ever heard of

  201. oxytocin oxytocin known as the okay our

  202. medical providers they they know about

  203. this it's the love hormone right well

  204. studies show that this love hormone is

  205. is uh excreted into the body at like

  206. super levels when you first start dating

  207. someone and it's like that for about 6

  208. months so that's why Romeo is so perfect

  209. for those first few months he's so kind

  210. he's so he's so gentle he's so loving

  211. he's just so funy and handsome and then

  212. the oxytocin decreases and all of the

  213. sudden you're like he chews with his

  214. mouth open he wears the same shirt every

  215. day he never texts me back that's why

  216. the average 16 to 18 year- old's dating

  217. relationships last get this six months

  218. oxytocin the love hormone you don't see

  219. him for who truly is until that hormone

  220. kind of wears off feelings change

  221. emotions change hormones change

  222. therefore those things cannot be stable

  223. enough to build a truth upon so if our

  224. truth is not absolute if it's not

  225. univers Universal if it doesn't come

  226. from a higher power then we put

  227. ourselves in grave danger people will as

  228. we've seen in our culture today they

  229. they'll start to redefine what what it

  230. means to be human they'll redefine what

  231. it means to be married or redefine a

  232. family or redefine gender morality

  233. becomes subjective and right and wrong

  234. are now relative to your context and

  235. self-righteous righteous people often

  236. religious people they they start to

  237. oppress other people and they use the

  238. name of Truth as their reasoning for

  239. doing so see Paul warned us about this

  240. tendency and it's come true in our day

  241. second Timothy chapter 4

    2 Timothy 4 chapter mention

  242. he says preach the word be ready in

  243. season and out of season correct rebuke

  244. and courage with great patience and

  245. teaching for the time will come when

  246. people will not tolerate sound Doctrine

  247. there will come a time where this room

  248. will be empty because people will not

  249. want to hear the truth but according to

  250. their own desires they will multiply

  251. teachers for themselves because they

  252. have an itch to hear what they want to

  253. hear they will turn away from hearing

  254. the truth and will turn aside side to

  255. myths so so how do we establish truth in

  256. an era where people just want you to

  257. tell them how smart they are and how

  258. right they are how do we establish truth

  259. well that's what Paul is telling the

  260. young Pastor Timothy about his church

  261. he's saying this is how you establish

  262. truth even in an era where people don't

  263. want to hear it he says number one

  264. preach the word preach the word not your

  265. opinions preach the word why because the

  266. word of God is living and it is active

  267. and it is a sword that separates the

  268. flesh from the the bone from the marrow

  269. it reveals who we are and what God wants

  270. us to be it is active it is useful for

  271. accomplishing God's

  272. purposes the the word will rebuke and

  273. correct and train you in righteousness

  274. it'll teach you how to be a good citizen

  275. in God's kingdom he says preach the word

  276. because the word is truth and the word

  277. is life but then he says another thing

  278. he doesn't just say preach the word he

  279. says Timothy preach the word with great

  280. encouragement and

  281. patience friends this is the missing

  282. virtue in a lot of the the teaching that

  283. I see today people have biblical truth

  284. they're absolutely right in what they're

  285. saying but they're saying it in such a

  286. way where they're so aggressive and so

  287. hateful and so arrogant that people just

  288. don't want to listen to the truth so he

  289. says Timothy be a good shepherd to your

  290. flock don't don't yell at them don't

  291. scream at them don't don't beat them

  292. over the head but teach them with great

  293. patience the truth of God he says God's

  294. word is able to correct rebuke and

  295. encourage that means it lets us see the

  296. problem it shows us how to fix the

  297. problem and then it encourages us with

  298. great patience as we seek to work on

  299. that problem in our own

  300. lives friends it's okay to feel a

  301. certain way about gender about abortion

  302. about morality but to say that your view

  303. is the only view that it's the absolute

  304. true view is very dangerous because

  305. friends we make very lousy

  306. Gods we're probably going to mess things

  307. up so is the reality of absolute truth a

  308. good thing yes it is because this truth

  309. comes from our Lord and Savior Jesus

  310. Christ who teaches us the best way to

  311. live Jesus Christ who died on the cross

  312. for our sin so that we can have a

  313. relationship with God Jesus Christ who

  314. who formed us and made us and knew us

  315. before we were ever even in our mother's

  316. womb that same Jesus is the one that

  317. establishes

  318. truth so learn the truth and teach the

  319. truth with great patience and

  320. encouragement and also with great

  321. confidence because there's a lot of

  322. things that I told my son when he was

  323. younger that I wish I had never told

  324. them because told him because as he's

  325. grown up I've realized that that was

  326. wrong like like things change and I

  327. learn and I grow as a parent and I did

  328. things that 10 years ago that I wouldn't

  329. do today so so like truth is subjective

  330. in that regard right so so what would

  331. have been better is to teach him the

  332. word of God to teach him the truth

  333. that's why we had him in church every

  334. time the church was open because I

  335. wanted him to learn the word because Dad

  336. is going to mess stuff up but your

  337. heavenly father would never will so you

  338. can tell your child something from God's

  339. word today and that thing will be true

  340. forever because 1 Peter 1:25 says the

    1 Peter 1:25

  341. word of the Lord endures

  342. forever God's truth does not change

  343. based on moods or personal preferences

  344. or or learning it is the same yesterday

  345. as it is today and it will be into the

  346. future and that is really good news for

  347. us because a lot of times what we want

  348. to hear is not actually what we need to

  349. hear we you might want to hear that you

  350. have the right to be angry like I'm the

  351. victim in this scenario I I should be

  352. upset I should be angry but what we need

  353. to hear is that Jesus says the foot of

  354. the cross is level and we are all

  355. sinners saved by grace and there is no

  356. one more righteous than anyone else we

  357. are all in the same needy position so we

  358. need to forgive that person not only to

  359. set them free but to set us free what we

  360. want to hear is to say like it's my body

  361. so I can do anything anything I want

  362. with it but but what we need to hear is

  363. God's word that says you are not your

  364. own you were bought with the price for

  365. the believer in Jesus he purchased you

  366. all of you on the cross with his death

  367. with his blood and when you give your

  368. life to him and he forgives you you

  369. enter into a relationship where you're

  370. you're now owned by Jesus which is a

  371. good thing that's why he says honor God

  372. with your body just because you believe

  373. it doesn't make it true now I do want to

  374. come back to this idea of perspectives

  375. because I do believe that perspectives

  376. matter I I preached a whole sermon

  377. series on this your perspective your

  378. experiences they are real and they

  379. matter because your story is God's story

  380. and people need to hear your story they

  381. need to see the world through the lens

  382. of your perspectives your perspective is

  383. a gift and it needs to be separated from

  384. absolute truth to be prop properly

  385. appreciated so I I do a lot of thrifting

  386. and a lot of times I find cool stuff and

  387. boxes that's covered with mouse

  388. excrement and I have to like you know

  389. dig it out of this box it's covered in

  390. dust and all that and then I clean it up

  391. and I I put it on a shelf and now it's

  392. in its proper place where it can be

  393. properly appreciated well that's what

  394. your perspective is it needs to be

  395. separated from absolute truth and placed

  396. in its proper place below absolute truth

  397. so then it can be properly appreciated

  398. by other people if my my perspective if

  399. what I feel or what I think or what I

  400. want or what I believe is contrary to

  401. God's word then guess what it cannot be

  402. true so perspectives yes are valuable

  403. but if they differ from God's word then

  404. the Bible says that we should submit

  405. them to a higher authority the Bible

  406. uses words like deny yourself and take

  407. up the cross the the Bible says that we

  408. need to crucify our fleshly desires

  409. because they war against us that this

  410. this truth the subjective truth that so

  411. many of us believe it can literally

  412. cause us to make poor choices which lead

  413. us into hurt harm and danger which is

  414. not what God wants for any of us so what

  415. do we do well through prayer through

  416. studying God's word and through relying

  417. on the power of the Holy Spirit we

  418. intentionally kill our perspectives when

  419. they press against or run counter to the

  420. word of God so so P it back to our

  421. original story he he knows that Jesus is

  422. in innocent he's interviewed Jesus he's

  423. he's done the research he's investigated

  424. this thing and he knows that Jesus is in

  425. innocent so he engages the crowd and he

  426. gives them a choice look at verse 38

  427. again John

  428. 18 He says what is truth and after he

  429. had said this he went out to the Jews

  430. and he told them I find no grounds for

  431. charging him so he knows the truth Jesus

  432. is innocent and then he comes up with a

  433. plan he's like hey I can let you out of

  434. this here's your get out of jail free

  435. card you you have this custom that I can

  436. release one prisoner to you at Passover

  437. and since today is Passover who do you

  438. want me to release to you and they said

  439. in verse 40 not this man Jesus but

  440. barabus barabus the criminal barabus the

  441. Revolutionary who's barabus well barabus

  442. is a thief he is a liar he is a murderer

  443. and palet has the crowd who should I

  444. release should I release Jesus the truth

  445. or barabus the liar and the crowd

  446. chooses

  447. barabus and pilate releases

  448. barabus why did he do that well he was

  449. listening to the crowd the the crowd

  450. said this must be true we would rather

  451. have this lie

  452. than this man who claims to be the truth

  453. and so barab or Pilot being influenced

  454. by the culture around him decides to

  455. give in and listen even though he knows

  456. that's not the right move he does what

  457. the culture wants him to

  458. do the crowd represented popular opinion

  459. so they must be right but more than that

  460. I believe is that truth is always

  461. universally resisted because truth can

  462. be confrontational truth can be

  463. difficult to hear truth requires a dirty

  464. word it requires change perspectives are

  465. more appealing because they're

  466. convenient and they're comfortable and

  467. they adapt to fit whatever you want

  468. whenever you want it even if they're

  469. opposed to God's

  470. word so truth is a person and his name

  471. is Jesus and so you might say well I

  472. want to follow truth today I I'm tired

  473. of this subjective stuff I I want real

  474. absolute truth but can I really believe

  475. that this is the actual word of

  476. God

  477. well I would tell you that I cannot

  478. convince you that this is the actual

  479. word of God any more than I could

  480. convince you any book is the actual word

  481. of God but I will tell you this I can

  482. show you evidence that the Bible is

  483. reliable I have tests that I use when

  484. I'm looking for truth the first one is

  485. internal consistency so if you read the

  486. Bible are there any cont predictions

  487. within this text the answer is no there

  488. are different perspectives from

  489. different Apostles and disciples and

  490. people like Matthew Mark Luke and John

  491. but every single word of this scripture

  492. is reliable because there are no

  493. contradictions I I'd give it a lit

  494. literary test so once upon a time in the

  495. Land of Nod where dreams in flight and

  496. thoughts are bride a child would wander

  497. eyes half closed through fields of

  498. Slumber softly dozed okay that's it's a

  499. beautiful little poem that's a fairy

  500. tale is that how the Bible is written no

  501. it is not the Bible is not a fairy tale

  502. the Bible says at this time at this

  503. place with these people around Jesus

  504. said these things and did these things

  505. and then you look at the scripture

  506. through the lens of History does the

  507. Bible talk about the the city of

  508. Atlantis it's out there in the ocean

  509. somewhere and we can't find it no it

  510. talks about real things like Bethlehem

  511. Jerusalem Nazareth Rome Real places that

  512. you can go and see Arch IC Al verifiable

  513. places does it talk about Cinderella and

  514. Zeus and Captain America no it doesn't

  515. it talks about real people like Pilots

  516. like like tiberias and Caesar Augustus

  517. and the Apostle Peter Peter real people

  518. from

  519. history is there manuscript support for

  520. this well do you ever play that game of

  521. telephone where you start a little

  522. secret and it goes around the circle and

  523. by the time it gets around the circle

  524. the end of the circle it's like

  525. completely different and distorted from

  526. the original secret that was passed

  527. around from person to person

  528. well that's how most things work when

  529. it's passed down especially over

  530. thousands of years of history but that's

  531. not what we have in the Bible all other

  532. religious materials they change over

  533. time you can look at any other religious

  534. book and throughout the decades and

  535. centuries you will see edits to that

  536. book The Original document looks very

  537. much different than the document that we

  538. have today but consider this the English

  539. New Testament the gospels Matthew Mark

  540. Luke and John they were composed by

  541. 5,800 00 Greek manuscripts that were

  542. written between 2 century and 10th

  543. Century ad and all these manuscripts

  544. were used to translate your Bible into

  545. the English version that you have before

  546. you

  547. today think about it this way a copy of

  548. the Isaiah scroll was found with the

  549. Dead Sea Scrolls and it was it's dated

  550. before Jesus was ever born and if you

  551. look at that copy of the Isaiah scroll

  552. and you look at your translation of

  553. Isaiah in your English Bible it is 99

  554. .9% the exact same why because the word

  555. of the Lord endures forever so have I

  556. have I shown you that the Bible is the

  557. word of God well no but have I shown you

  558. that the Bible is reliable and it is

  559. true the answer is yes so when you read

  560. the Bible read it as a source of Truth

  561. read it with great confidence when you

  562. read the gospels Matthew Mark Luke and

  563. John as they talk about the life of

  564. Jesus read that with great Assurance

  565. knowing that they are verifying exact

  566. things that happened exactly like they

  567. did in real life and then ask yourself

  568. this does the evidence does the evidence

  569. of the way Jesus lived the content of

  570. his ethical teaching the way he died on

  571. the cross forgiving his enemies the way

  572. he rose from the dead does that point to

  573. him as trustworthy or does it not does

  574. it point to him as a quack or the truth

  575. friends it's a no-brainer to me if you

  576. die and rise from the dead then I'm

  577. going to listen very closely to what you

  578. have to say to me so truth is not just

  579. something we believe abstractly truth is

  580. something it's a person that we follow

  581. and his name is Jesus in John 14:6 Jesus

    John 14:6

  582. says I'm the way the truth and the life

  583. no one comes to the father except

  584. through me he didn't say I am a truth he

  585. says I am the truth that's such good

  586. news for people that try that that want

  587. to follow truth because Jesus also said

  588. in John

    John 3:16

  589. 3:16 for God so loved the world that he

  590. gave his only begotten son that

  591. whosoever believes in Him should not

  592. perish but have everlasting life and

  593. then verse 17 which is so powerful too I

  594. don't know why we don't include that

  595. every time we say 360 it says for God

  596. did not send his son into the world to

  597. condemn the world but to save the world

  598. through him Jesus continues in John 8:32

    John 8:32

  599. he says you will know the truth and the

  600. truth will set you what free the truth

  601. will set you free so Jesus this person

  602. who represents absolute truth from the

  603. very word of God he represents loving

  604. truth lifechanging truth a truth that

  605. does not condemn you a truth that sets

  606. you free just because it feels right

  607. just because because it seems right just

  608. because you want it just because you

  609. believe it doesn't make it true there's

  610. a path that leads to death and a lot of

  611. people are going to find it but there is

  612. also Praise Jesus a light a way that

  613. leads to life and few will find it the

  614. way that leads to life is is Jesus he is

  615. the word of Truth made flesh so even

  616. when Jesus goes against the way way that

  617. you feel the way that you believe you

  618. must choose to follow him and when you

  619. do thank God he will show you the way to

  620. the truth and the life let's pray
