Truth Bomb: Part 2

-
main idea of our sermon series we're
-
talking about truth and uh I just want
-
to point out that there are a lot of
-
things that feel like truth and seem
-
like truth but they're absolutely not
-
truth so what is truth well truth has to
-
be absolute has to be for everyone
-
everywhere at all times uh and I'm using
-
the title truth bomb because it takes me
-
back it's kind of a nostalgic thing for
-
me when I was a youth pastor it was kind
-
of a thing uh back in the early 2000s
-
really and I remember one time a bunch
-
of middle schoolers we had a lock in and
-
they broke into the kitchen where I was
-
um where where we stored all the food
-
and I had made the mistake of buying a a
-
large container of those cheese balls
-
from Sam's Club and I put them in the
-
kitchen because we we were going to give
-
them to the students but of course the
-
middle school students uh broke into the
-
kitchen they found the cheese balls and
-
of course they don't eat them because
-
why would you eat the food that we
-
bought for you no they play dodgeball
-
with them in the Church Fellowship
-
center with a carpet in there and of
-
course they step on them driving the
-
cheese balls into the carpet and when I
-
confronted all these middle school
-
students that had done this they said
-
truth bomb I'm like oh boy they say
-
truth bomb you shouldn't have bought
-
those for
-
us how's it my fault I'm trying to give
-
these kids a snack and somehow it's my
-
fault okay so these are um just some
-
lessons that that we learn from uh from
-
truth when you're confronted with Truth
-
uh how how do you react and so truth
-
bomb number one last week um I felt like
-
our our services were getting a little
-
too crowded so I wanted to kind of
-
preach through this series try to open
-
up some seats for uh for new people but
-
uh we talked about the the truth that is
-
just because you believe it doesn't make
-
it true just because you believe it
-
doesn't make it true and if you want to
-
Le learn more about that you can go back
-
last week and listen to that sermon but
-
what we talked about really was there's
-
a path and it leads to death it's what
-
the Bible tells us there's a path and it
-
seem seems right seems right seems like
-
the thing we should be doing but
-
ultimately it leads us to a place of
-
death but we also talked about another
-
path a path that leads to life and it's
-
Jesus who paved that path for us so if
-
we will follow Jesus he will take us to
-
the truth and the life so let's pray and
-
then we'll get started on today's truth
-
bomm Lord thank I just want to thank you
-
so much for the opportunity to uh to to
-
be able to share the gospel with people
-
I'm just humbled by this
-
uh this calling Lord I don't know why
-
you would choose someone like me but you
-
did and so Lord I pray that today I
-
would uh do a good job of representing
-
you and your word and that the truth
-
that we are confronted with although
-
could seem painful I pray that you help
-
us to see it for what it is which is
-
love coming from our heavenly father who
-
just wants us to be able to be the
-
people that you created us to be Lord I
-
know there's so many on our prayer list
-
that are suffering and hurting we have
-
uh several at the the rehab center right
-
now we have one in the hospital and
-
others who are at home nursing wounds
-
and and other ailments and diseases and
-
God I just pray that in all those
-
situations that you would just make
-
yourself known to those people Lord that
-
you would be very practical in the way
-
that you showed them your love that you
-
would send the right people at the right
-
time into those rooms to encourage them
-
to to help them heal that you would put
-
the doctors and nurses in front of them
-
that can figure out exactly what they
-
need and give it to them when they need
-
it Lord we pray those things with
-
confidence because we're praying in the
-
awesome name of Jesus Jesus Christ
-
amen do you remember the day when milk
-
was just milk anybody else I feel like
-
I'm an old man talking about this but I
-
do remember a day when milk was milk you
-
had your whole milk your skin milk your
-
1% and your 2% and that was like all of
-
your milk options and also was wondered
-
what like what's the other 98% and the
-
2% milk but anyway um so you know you go
-
to the store you buy milk but then they
-
had this like milk Revolution where you
-
had the plant-based milk and the toose
-
free milk and the vegan milk and the the
-
joh the the um non GMO milk and now you
-
have like selections such as cow milk
-
goat milk oat milk rice milk soy milk
-
coconut milk and almond milk how do you
-
milk an almond anybody know I don't know
-
but it's all over the place see my
-
parents they used to be like normal
-
people and they had milk in the
-
refrigerator and so if you wanted cereal
-
you got milk and you pour it on your now
-
I go look in the refrigerator they have
-
everything but milk it's like there's no
-
option for just normal milk and so me
-
and my kids wanted milk when we were
-
visiting cuz we wanted to eat some
-
cereal and so I decided you don't want
-
to go to the Walmart at Myrtle Beach
-
okay just for reference if you're ever
-
in Myrtle Beach don't go to the Walmart
-
it's a scary place so uh I went to the
-
little corner store near their house and
-
there was one gallon of milk left and me
-
and this other guy we made eye contact
-
and we made eye contact with the milk
-
and I would love to stand up here and
-
tell you that as a pastor I was like sir
-
God bless you this is your lucky day
-
because because God loves you so much
-
that he sent me to your life to give you
-
this last gallon of milk because the
-
last shall be first and the the the
-
first shall be last and it is better to
-
give than to receive God bless you I
-
wish I could say that that's what took
-
place but that's not what took place I
-
said hey there's Santa Claus and when he
-
turned to look at Santa Claus I was like
-
grab the milk okay that's not true
-
either truth bomb number one this guy
-
had on a motorcycle club leather vest
-
and a huge ponytail and he was like 10
-
times bigger than me um so he got the
-
milk because I'm a coward so I was like
-
he take the milk I'm not I wound up at
-
Walmart yes yes smart that's survival
-
skills
-
man so he got the milk and I wound up at
-
Walmart and I got my milk eventually so
-
I could eat my Frosted Mini Wheats in
-
peace but truth bomb number two the more
-
important one that we should listen to
-
today is that putting ourselves first is
-
one of the most natural things that all
-
of us do putting ourselves first first
-
is one of the most natural things that
-
all of us do you take a group photo say
-
there's four people in the photo soon as
-
the photo is taken they show you the
-
photo who do you look at first yourself
-
always right and you could have one
-
friend in the photo whose hair is like
-
blown into their face their eyes are
-
closed and they're picking their nose
-
but if you look good in the photo you
-
know what you say great
-
photo all of us are the same we might
-
pretend like we're selfless but inside
-
our natural instinct is to put ourselves
-
first which makes sense because we were
-
born into a world that is self-obsessed
-
our natural desire is to be selfish I
-
mean think about it back in the Garden
-
of Eden when the serpent approached Adam
-
and Eve the Serpent's main strategy was
-
to get them to eat of the fruit that
-
they were told not to eat from and the
-
way that he conned them into doing it is
-
to tell them that if they ate of the
-
fruit they would be
-
it's the second chapter in the Bible
-
this is kind of
-
scary they would be like what Larry
-
they'd be like God right he appealed to
-
their selfish nature and then the Bible
-
tells us that as we are born we are born
-
with the sin nature that we inherited
-
from Adam and Eve so we're
-
naturally selfish and then we live in a
-
in a world that's run by Satan and what
-
was Satan's greatest sin what did he get
-
kicked out out of heaven for it was
-
Pride he wanted to be God so our natural
-
inclination is to be selfish and we're
-
living in a world that Satan has set up
-
to appeal to our self Obsession so we
-
have this gravity that pulls us towards
-
self we have this nagging desire to do
-
what's best for us and our family even
-
when it goes against the very heart of
-
the
-
Gospel Philippians chapter 2
Philippians 2 chapter mention
-
verse3 says do nothing out of selfish
-
ambition or conceit do nothing out of
-
selfish ambition or conceit but in
-
humility consider others more important
-
than yourselves everyone should look not
-
to his own interests but rather to the
-
interests of
-
others doing what you think is best for
-
you it sounds good and it feels good and
-
it feels true but if we recognize God's
-
word as the supreme ultimate Authority
-
in our lives then we have to decree that
-
no Behavior no word or deed should ever
-
be born from selfish
-
desire and I wish it was that easy but
-
we have this clever messaging in our
-
culture that feeds into the self
-
self-obsession and it's it's so nuanced
-
and it's so in your face but you don't
-
really know that it's not true I I just
-
did a simple uh search of of my social
-
media feed to look for for posts that
-
had references to what we're talking
-
about today and one that came up over
-
and over again was one that said
-
something to the line something in the
-
line of you can't truly love others
-
until you love yourself wh which is sort
-
of true but it doesn't seem incomplete
-
right it's missing something there's
-
another one I saw it said treat yourself
-
I like that one um and stuff like you
-
deserve it you know like I'm awesome of
-
course I deserve it you know it kind of
-
appeals to that there's there's one that
-
says like self-care is not selfish
-
because you can't pour from an empty cup
-
which is true 80% but you have to ask
-
the question what is filling your cup
-
what are they pointing you toward and
-
then I saw one that said cut I was like
-
cut out anyone in your life that does
-
not manifest joy and I was like I
-
wouldn't have kids if that was true
-
they'd all be up for
-
adoption man but it's it's deceptive
-
messaging that tickles your ears because
-
we are naturally lovers of self that's
-
why the Bible says do not be a lover of
-
self let's go to Second Timothy chapter
2 Timothy 3 chapter mention
-
3
-
second CH Timothy chapter 3 starting in
-
verse
-
one Paul talking to his Protegé Timothy
-
who is started to Pastor a church and
-
he's a young man probably a teenager
-
early 20s at the oldest and he's
-
pastoring this this church and Paul
-
wants to give him some practical wisdom
-
coming from the Holy Spirit he says know
-
this Timothy hard times will come in the
-
last days for people will be lovers of
-
self lovers of money
-
boastful proud demeaning disobedient to
-
their parents ungrateful Unholy unloving
-
irreconcilable slanderers without
-
self-control brutal without love for
-
what is good traitors Reckless conceited
-
lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of
-
God holding to a form get this a form of
-
godliness but denying its power avoid
-
these people it's a good word avoid
-
these people he's talking about the
-
people in the church as well as the
-
community so Christians are not absolved
-
from this conversation this is a
-
horrifying phrase to me when it says
-
lovers of self because it just hits so
-
close to home like in our heads we know
-
that we were created in the image of God
-
to love God and enjoy him forever and
-
part of that is serving other people I
-
mean it's literally the mission
-
statement of sa Creek Baptist Church
-
which is love God and serve others but
-
it's so scary to think that if I'm not
-
walking circumspectly which is my wife's
-
favorite word in the entire Bible um and
-
it means that to watch or to look while
-
walking so if I'm not taking account of
-
my motives as I'm going through life and
-
asking myself why am I making this
-
decision then I could easily become a
-
lover of self and in the church context
-
this presents as a me centered
-
ecclesiology it it's where the country
-
club Church comes from it's those Sunday
-
school groups that become restricted and
-
it's that service evaluation team where
-
people can be in a place worshiping with
-
hundreds of other people and then at the
-
end of the day if that service didn't
-
speak directly to them they will go and
-
say hey we have to change because this
-
this is not for me it's those types of
-
things that happen when we become lovers
-
of self and I want you to know these are
-
not horrible people these are not
-
enemies these are people like you and I
-
that just gradually become people who
-
fall into this trap of prioritizing
-
self-care over
-
selflessness and friends the reason this
-
is in your Bible is because God loves
-
you he he's not trying to step on your
-
toes today he's not trying to beat you
-
up with the word of God what he's trying
-
to do is expose something that is bad
-
for you so as our culture has gone more
-
and more into this self
-
self-centeredness it has become the the
-
most stressed out generation in all of
-
human history that's the result of
-
living for self when you live for self
-
you cut off all the things that are good
-
and it puts you on an island by yourself
-
and when you're on an island by yourself
-
that is when you get stressed out and
-
anxious and depressed so the truth bomb
-
is maybe our problem isn't that we don't
-
love ourselves enough maybe our problem
-
is is that we love ourselves too
-
much they're never going to get an amen
-
after these statements am I that's cool
-
I
-
understand Mark chapter
Mark 12 chapter mention
-
12 says this is Jesus someone is like
-
hey what's the most important command
-
great question Jesus says love the Lord
-
your God with all of your heart with all
-
of your soul and with all of your mind
-
and with all of your strength the second
-
one is like it love your neighbor as
-
yourself there is no command greater
-
than these so first of all we need to
-
learn to love God with all of our heart
-
soul and strength secondly we also need
-
to love our neighbor and they go on to
-
ask well who is our neighbor because
-
they're trying to limit that command as
-
our neighbor in like a 10 mile radius of
-
our house like they want to know
-
specifics and so Jesus tells them the
-
story of the Good Samaritan which the
-
the point of that Parable is that um the
-
the neighbor is anybody that has a need
-
even if they look different than you and
-
talk different than you that's what
-
Jesus says so defining your neighbor is
-
Broad it's everybody anybody that has a
-
need that's in your sphere you should
-
love so some of you are like well I
-
don't love myself right I don't I don't
-
love myself I I get stressed out too
-
easily I cry over the silliest stuff I
-
know people that hate their feet like
-
lit they'll never be seen without socks
-
on because they hate their feet They
-
Don't Love themselves but I would argue
-
that actually that that level of
-
critical
-
self-evaluation shows that you love
-
yourself way too much otherwise you
-
wouldn't notice these things so like in
-
biblical counseling if someone comes in
-
presenting with those kind of issues we
-
would help them to see that it's their
-
their the fact that they are so
-
self-focused and they see the world
-
through this myopic lens that it's
-
actually what's causing them to feel
-
like they don't love themselves when
-
actually truth bomb they love themselves
-
too to much so we give them the care
-
they need uh to help them see themselves
-
the way that Jesus does so notice in
-
this passage Jesus doesn't command us to
-
love ourselves here because it's kind of
-
a given most of us naturally just love
-
ourselves but there are people who
-
legitimately do not love yourself and I
-
just want you to to understand that you
-
are fearfully and wonderfully made God
-
knit you together in your mother's wound
-
you were on God's mind at the creation
-
of the universe you were the joy that
-
was set before Jesus as he died on the
-
cross you have dignity you have value
-
you have purpose Jesus died for you so
-
that you could be through faith adopted
-
into his kingdom and become Sons and
-
Daughters of God so do not ever look in
-
that mirror and not love yourself
-
because Jesus loved you for God so loved
-
the world that's you that he gave his
-
only begotten
-
son so we have people that truly don't
-
love themselves but for the most part
-
many of us do so let's assume that we
-
love ourselves as this passage is
-
assuming he tells us then that we must
-
love God so we can do that we can love
-
self we can love God I mean after all
-
God sacrificed his son because he loved
-
us so much that those two things are
-
really easy but then he says to complete
-
what love actually looks like there's a
-
another command and that command is to
-
love your neighbor as yourself so to
-
complete the greatest command it's has
-
three things you love yourself you love
-
God and you love your
-
neighbor salvation is this beautiful
-
celebration of
-
submission so Jesus made this very
-
difficult statement in Matthew chap 16
-
ver 24 he was telling his disciples and
-
other people that if you want to be my
-
disciple you must do these things he
-
says if anybody wants to follow after me
-
that would mean that you love yourself
-
and you love God right if you want to
-
follow after me let him deny himself
-
here's the hard part take up his cross
-
and follow me so let the weight of that
-
statement hit you you know I got people
-
in my life they're like this is my cross
-
to bear you know it's like I got a nosy
-
neighbor oh it's my cross cross to bear
-
I got a difficult math teacher oh it's
-
my cross to bear they didn't give me my
-
hot sauce with my tacos oh it's my cross
-
to bear you know we use that phrase and
-
we really take the meaning out of it
-
when Jesus said this to his disciples
-
when he says deny yourself and take up
-
your cross the disciples likely gasp
-
they're like is he serious does he even
-
understand what he is asking us to do
-
and the reason that the weight of that
-
statement doesn't hit us is because a
-
lot of us don't have the context for
-
what it actually means you see 30 years
-
earlier when Jesus was probably three or
-
three to five years old there was a
-
thing called a Jewish rebellion and you
-
can read about it in uh Acts chapter 5
Acts 5 chapter mention
-
it's where the Jews Ro rose up against
-
the Romans because of the the ludicrous
-
taxes that they were being asked to pay
-
to Rome and in this Uprising the Jews
-
were
-
absolutely slaughtered most most of them
-
were killed but a lot of them were taken
-
captive and those that were taken
-
captive were led into the streets by the
-
Roman centurions and commanded to take
-
up their cross to take the Cross Beam
-
and to March down the streets of their
-
town to the other beam that was already
-
in the ground or was laying beside the
-
road and they would nail the two
-
together and then hang the people on the
-
cross on the side of the road as if they
-
were human Billboards and Rome did this
-
as a reminder to everybody that would
-
see see this that if you rise up against
-
the paana or the Roman peace this is
-
what would become of you and your people
-
and it's most likely that as Jesus was
-
traveling as a young man from from
-
Bethlehem to Nazareth to Jerusalem that
-
he saw these people on the side of the
-
road because history tells us that they
-
were left up there for sometimes over a
-
year as an example to the people that
-
would see them so when Jesus says if you
-
want to follow me take take up your
-
cross this is a serious command but we
-
should not react in
-
horror the disciples didn't either
-
because they understood they understood
-
what was going on see we don't have to
-
react in horror to that statement
-
because we can actually take up our
-
cross since Jesus Took up his cross
-
before we did see Jesus went to Calvary
-
for us so now our Act of taking up the
-
cross is not going to the hill to pay
-
the pr price for our sin that's already
-
been paid for our Act is simply
-
obedience following after Jesus
-
following in his footsteps we can
-
actually take up the cross and deny
-
ourselves because Jesus already took up
-
the cross for himself so serving others
-
is not torture it's actually the
-
expression it's a way to celebrate our
-
Salvation because salvation is a
-
celebration of
-
submission it it's the moment where
-
Jesus buries our old selfish life our
-
old selfish ways when he forgives us of
-
our sin and raises us to New Life with a
-
new heart and a new attitude in two
-
weeks we're going to have another
-
baptism and I love baptism because of
-
the symbology behind it the reason we
-
dunk people in the water is because
-
number one that's how they do it in the
-
Bible but number two it's a picture of
-
Jesus on the cross and Jesus in the
-
grave and Jesus raised to life and then
-
individually for us it's the symbol of
-
how we were dead in our selfishness and
-
our self-centeredness and our sin and
-
then all of the sudden God comes into
-
our life through faith and he washes Us
-
in the blood of Jesus and he raises us
-
to a new life in Christ where we have a
-
new heart and a new
-
attitude service though and this is
-
where I want to dig in just a little bit
-
because I know a lot of us are kind of
-
thinking probably about other people
-
that are selfish but I I want us to
-
understand even in a church setting that
-
our actual religious Services can become
-
self-serving so for example last week
-
there were those crazy winds like 23 M
-
hour gusts and I decided to go to
-
Walmart because I knew nobody would be
-
there um so I'm at Walmart I get stuff
-
and go back to my car and all of a
-
sudden I see this person and they're
-
like two just two spots down from where
-
your your cart return thing so they put
-
their groceries in their car and they
-
leave their cart right there beside
-
their car and I'm thinking 23 mph gust
-
that thing is a
-
missile the wind hits it right
-
somebody's car is getting destroyed so
-
you know what I did because I'm a good
-
Christian because I'm a pastor and I
-
represent Jesus in all that I do I went
-
and I took that cart right in front of
-
and I put it and the cart returned and I
-
looked at them and I was like Praise
-
Jesus that's not at all I did get the
-
cart and I did put it in the cart return
-
but that look had nothing about Jesus
-
that look was shame on you horrible
-
people get your life right go to church
-
that's what that look
-
was I just wanted to shame them publicly
-
honestly that's just that's what
-
happened in my heart in that moment and
-
after like you know some time went by
-
I'm like oh my goodness I did that for
-
the wrong reasons but here's the point
-
service service can actually be self
-
serving which is why I love the story of
-
Mary and Martha let's look at Luke chap
-
10
-
now Luke chapter 10 we're going to jump
Luke 10 chapter mention
-
to Luke chap 10 verse
-
38 while they were traveling Jesus and
-
his disciples they entered a village and
-
a woman named Martha welcomed them into
-
her home she had a sister named Mary who
-
was also who sat at the Lord's feet and
-
was listening to him but Martha was
-
distracted by her many Works her many t
-
asks and she came up and she asked Lord
-
don't you even care that my sister has
-
left me to serve alone so tell her to
-
give me a hand and the Lord answered her
-
Martha Martha you are worried and upset
-
about many things but one thing is
-
necessary Mary has made the right choice
-
and it will not be taken away from her
-
so you got the Marys and the Martha
-
we've done this before but Marys are
-
contemplative and Martha are active and
-
Marys are like to talk and Martha's like
-
to work and Mary's like to be and
-
Martha's like to do and Mary's like to
-
be in the presence of others and
-
Martha's like to be preparing for others
-
and Mary's are worried about the
-
relationships and Martha's are worried
-
about the responsibilities and let's be
-
honest Marys generally annoy Martha okay
-
just being honest but but which of the
-
two does Jesus tell us to be most like
-
in this story this true story what does
-
he say who chose the good
-
portion Mary did the good portion I like
-
that I always think about the the corner
-
Brownie and the tray you know cuz I love
-
the corners like that to me and my
-
worldview that's the good portion and so
-
that's what Mary chose she shows the
-
good portion there's still good brownie
-
in the pan that's what Martha got but
-
the good portion that that went to Mary
-
because she made the right choice but
-
and you would say but wait whoa whoa
-
whoa Martha's get stuff done like Martha
-
invited Jesus and by the way he had 82
-
disciples at this point people following
-
him so Jesus plus 82 to their house
-
right and if it wasn't n for Martha then
-
Mary never gets to set at the feet of
-
Jesus so we could just justify this
-
thing all day long but the truth is
-
According To Jesus that Martha's service
-
in this moment was actually
-
self-serving doesn't it look great on
-
the outside all the stuff that Martha
-
did right it does yes it's good it's
-
good work but in this moment that work
-
was being done in a self centered way
-
see service without Jesus will never
-
lead you into happiness it'll never lead
-
you into to meaningful relationships or
-
daily purpose or inner peace because
-
selfishness here's another truth bomm is
-
the enemy of Happiness the enemy of
-
relationships it's the enemy of purpose
-
it's the enemy of peace I mean just look
-
at how Martha reacted in her service it
-
says she was distracted by much serving
-
she's overextended she's like we have to
-
get this stuff done
-
and it says she went up to Jesus and
-
said Lord do you not care so now she's
-
frustrated she's like no one is working
-
as hard as me then she said do you not
-
care that my sister has left me to do it
-
all alone now she's feeling isolated
-
like she's the only one pulling her
-
weight in the house and then she says to
-
Jesus tell her to give me a
-
command she speaks to the Son of God and
-
commands him to do something for her
-
that's how far irritated she is right
-
she's bossing Around Jesus she's like
-
Jesus if you would just make Mary help
-
then I could have the dinner served if
-
you would make Mary help I would have
-
your laundry clean if you would make
-
Mary Help the beds would be made and all
-
the Martha is in the room I know you're
-
not going to do it out loud but you're
-
like you go girl
-
right it's
-
fine Jesus says in this moment in this
-
context Martha Martha you are worried
-
and upset what did I tell you what
-
happened when we become self-serving
-
Even in our Christian service when we do
-
things for the wrong motives we become
-
anxious stressed and depressed well
-
guess what it's been that way for 2,000
-
years look at this Martha Martha you are
-
worried and you are upset about many
-
things Jesus cares more about your heart
-
than he does your hands and the reason
-
it was so vital in this context for
-
Martha also to set at the feet feat of
-
Jesus is because Jesus knows that he's
-
getting ready to go to the cross and
-
these are two of his best friends in the
-
world and if Martha spends the whole
-
time doing Christian service and not
-
sitting at the feet of Jesus then she is
-
wasting this one last opportunity to sit
-
there with one of her best friends and
-
her Lord and Savior Jesus
-
Christ so what's the point the point is
-
that we need to learn to worship like
-
like Mary before you work like
-
Martha so if you
-
worship if you worship which means that
-
you're practicing self-care in a
-
Biblical way worship is singing songs to
-
Jesus worship is studying your Bible
-
worship is preserving this beautiful day
-
of rest called the Sabbath that God
-
created for us worship is meditating on
-
God's word if you're doing those things
-
that act of self care in order to get
-
yourself mentally and emotionally and
-
physically and spiritually healthy so
-
that you can then love God and serve
-
others then that's no longer being
-
selfish so we have to worship like Mary
-
before we work like Mar
-
Martha and you know what that does it
-
sets you up to do something very
-
important because the most important
-
thing that you will ever do other than
-
give your life to
-
Jesus is to love other other people so
-
I'm going invite the worship team up on
-
the stage but as they're coming up here
-
don't lose your concentration I want to
-
go to Galatians chapter 2 verse
-
20 Galatians Chapter 2 verse2 Paul says
Galatians 2 chapter mention
-
I have been crucified with Christ and I
-
no longer live but Christ lives in me
-
the life I now live in the body I live
-
by faith in the Son of God who loved me
-
and gave himself for me life is no
-
longer about me it's it's not about my
-
wants or my desires or my wishes I'm
-
dead to that sin I'm dead to myself I'm
-
dead to my desires it's Christ that
-
lives within me so when my selfish
-
desires rise up and they say it's all
-
about you Kevin you know what I say I
-
say self you dead you might want to
-
learn those three words I say self you
-
dead when self says no you got to treat
-
yourself
-
you got to you got to fill yourself up
-
so you can pour yourself I'm like nope
-
self you dead I say Jesus killed you the
-
day that I placed my faith in him self
-
you are dead because Jesus put you down
-
that day in elener West Virginia at
-
ellar Baptist Church under the great
-
hand of Reverend Panero when I got
-
baptized in those Waters that was Jesus
-
drowning my old self and raising me to a
-
new life that part of me is dead self
-
you are dead and I don't listen to dead
-
people but you know who I do listen to
-
people that used to be dead and came
-
back to life they got something for me
-
I'm going to be listening to what they
-
say and that's exactly who Jesus is
-
Jesus is Alive and Jesus tells me to
-
love the Lord your God with all of your
-
heart with all of your soul with all of
-
your mind and with all of your strength
-
and then he says the second command is
-
so great to love your neighbor as
-
yourself so one of the most important
-
things that I'm ever going to do is to
-
love my neighbor Jesus didn't call us to
-
promote ourselves he called us to Humble
-
ourselves Jesus didn't call us to pamper
-
ourselves he called us to deny ourselves
-
he did not call us to serve ourselves
-
but to serve others to share the gospel
-
with them to meet their practical needs
-
both of those things at the same time he
-
he called us to not put ourselves first
-
but to put ourselves last he called us
-
to not seek our own pleasure but to
-
pursue God's purpose even when it hurts
-
so maybe today you've located an area in
-
your life where you have been selfish
-
even in your Christian service maybe
-
you've noticed an area where you are
-
doing things and the wrong
-
motives just listen to what God's truth
-
says listen to what Jesus has to say he
-
says look I've killed that part of you
-
when you gave your life to me that part
-
of you died you no longer live for self
-
you live because Christ is in
-
you so I'm going to ask you if you would
-
to just kind of bow your head for a
-
moment let's do some introspection
-
before we pray and sing a worship
-
song ask yourself it is
-
life simply about me
-
is it my
-
wants is it my wishes is it my
-
will or is it Christ that lives in
-
me have I really truly allowed Jesus to
-
kill that part of myself that sin
-
selfish nature have I let him drown it
-
in the baptismal Waters is it truly
-
Christ that lives within me when that
-
selfish side of me Rises up and it will
-
every single day when it rises up and
-
says you deserve this don't worry about
-
them treat
-
yourself am I able to say the word self
-
you are
-
dead do
-
listen so today Father we
-
pray I pray for
-
myself because this is a battle that I
-
face all the time
-
I pray that today that you
-
would put this scripture in my heart so
-
I might not sin against you help me to
-
dwell and meditate on the fact that I to
-
love you with all my heart soul and
-
strength but also to love my neighbor as
-
well and and whatever that means
-
whatever needs are in front of me
-
whether it's a they need salvation they
-
need an invite to church they need a
-
handicap ramp built they need us to go
-
all the way to the western part of the
-
state and and help them to get back into
-
their homes whatever that need looks
-
like Lord I pray that we would be
-
sensitive to it not out of selfish
-
desire to prove ourselves or to show but
-
Lord to to truly just want to show the
-
love of Christ to people in very
-
practical
-
ways to tell them the
-
truth so Lord I Thank you for a church
-
that is built on this Foundation of
-
selflessness and I know we all struggle
-
but Lord we we seem to be doing a pretty
-
decent job here but I know that the
-
enemy hates that and so I pray that any
-
that are having their hearts turned
-
inward right now would then have their
-
hearts turned outward that they would be
-
outward focused looking for needs and
-
opportunities living out this this
-
command that you have given us to die to
-
self to take up our cross and to serve
-
other
-
people Lord I pray that a Revival would
-
start in this
-
community and Lord that you would allow
-
us to just be a part of it and we know
-
for that reeval Bible to start we have
-
to start focusing on the truth of God's
-
word so this month as we dig into these
-
difficult truths I pray that you would
-
help us to see that these These are good
-
prescriptive words for us that will
-
simply help us live life in abundance so
-
father as we worship you today with this
-
last song if there are any in this room
-
that that need to just pray where
-
they're at and say self you are
-
dead I pray that you would give them the
-
courage to do that Lord if there are any
-
that need to come up to the altar or
-
even pray with me I pray that you would
-
give them the the boldness to step out
-
and do what the holy spirit is command
-
you to do in these moments Lord have
-
your way freely in our hearts in Jesus
-
holy and precious name I pray
-
amen let's stand and worship together
-
[Music]
-
you're
-
the that
-
my
