  1. we'll be in uh Matthew chapter 28 and

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  2. also John chapter 20 if you'd like to

    John 20 chapter mention

  3. join me there uh welcome to Easter at

  4. the Creek excited that you made this

  5. part of your uh your worship experience

  6. and I think it's really cool that this

  7. morning we get to gather together with

  8. literally two billion two billion other

  9. Christians on this planet who are

  10. celebrating one single reality and that

  11. is the fact that Jesus defeated death

  12. jesus defeated death now before Easter

  13. death was the most final thing that any

  14. person could ever face but because of

  15. Jesus resurrection we get to proclaim

  16. victory even in death we get to ask

  17. death we get to say "Hey death where is

  18. your sting?" Now now here's the thing

  19. the resurrection isn't just something

  20. that Jesus experienced it's literally

  21. who he is he says of himself in John 11

  22. "I am the resurrection and the life the

  23. one who believes in me even if he dies

  24. will live." The Apostle Peter said

  25. "Blessed be the God and father of our

  26. Lord Jesus Christ." Because of his great

  27. mercy he has given us new birth into a

  28. living hope the same living hope that we

  29. just sang about he's given us this

  30. living hope through the resurrection of

  31. Jesus Christ from the dead the Apostle

  32. Paul says "Therefore we were buried with

  33. him into a baptism of death in order

  34. that just as Christ was raised from the

  35. dead by the glory of the Father so we

  36. too may walk in a newness of life."

  37. Friends don't get it twisted easter

  38. doesn't mean that there won't be any

  39. more bad days but it does mean that

  40. Jesus has the final say on everything

  41. jesus is the firstborn of all creation

  42. and he is the bright and morning star he

  43. is the lily of the valley he is the

  44. chief cornerstone he is the bread of

  45. life he is the lion of the tribe of

  46. Judah he is the seed of Abraham he is

  47. the son of man he is the great I am

  48. jesus is the

  49. undeniable Messiah

  50. so what that means is for you personally

  51. for every hurt every question every

  52. disappointment every unmet expectation

  53. Jesus answers your suffering with a

  54. bloody cross and an empty

  55. tomb we worship an undeniable Messiah he

  56. is not an abstract theory he is the

  57. reality of what is hoped for he is the

  58. proof of what is not seen christianity

  59. is not a religion or a philosophy

  60. christianity is all about a man who died

  61. on a cross on a Friday and by the power

  62. of God on Sunday morning he had

  63. resurrected from the dead and the same

  64. spirit that raised Jesus from the dead

  65. now lives in you so so here's the Easter

  66. message nothing is impossible for them

  67. who believe and friends we are them

  68. let's pray god thank you for your word i

  69. pray that it would ring out from this

  70. church i pray that not only this church

  71. but every church in our community would

  72. have a revival this morning that your

  73. spirit would speak to each and every one

  74. of us that we would figure out what you

  75. want for us to do who you want us to be

  76. and that you would shape us into the

  77. image of Jesus and God if there is

  78. anyone out there in this crowd or

  79. watching online that has a distance

  80. between you and them has a stone that's

  81. been rolled and between their

  82. relationship with you I pray that today

  83. you would use the power of the Holy

  84. Spirit and just flick that stone away so

  85. they can see once and for all how much

  86. you love them and how much you want a

  87. relationship with them we ask these

  88. things in Jesus' name amen

  89. join me in Matthew chapter 28 verse

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  90. one says after the Sabbath as the first

  91. day of the week was dawning Mary

  92. Magdalene and the other Mary went to

  93. view the tomb so we know the two Marys

  94. were there we learn in another gospel

  95. that Solom was there as well they made

  96. their way to the tomb to pay their

  97. respects to the dead and gone Jesus

  98. Christ now even though Jesus told them

  99. that he would raise from the dead he

  100. told them through parables he told them

  101. through analogies he told them through

  102. direct conversation "Hey I'm going to

  103. die but I'm coming back from the dead."

  104. But they had never experienced or even

  105. thought of anything like that before and

  106. so through the trauma and their life

  107. experiences they were unable to

  108. synthesize these two realities so the

  109. Marys came to the tomb expecting to to

  110. grieve and weep but the script was

  111. flipped so who's the day the day is

  112. first of all Mary Magdalene mary

  113. Magdalene is a woman that we learn in

  114. Luke chapter 8 when she met Jesus seven

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  115. demons jumped out of her seven demons

  116. jumped out of her like you think your

  117. morning was bad they they ran out of

  118. your favorite coffee at Waw Wa seven

  119. demons jumped out of this woman when she

  120. met Jesus and so I'm so glad that she

  121. was the first one at the tomb because

  122. she represents a group of people she

  123. represents all the broken imperfect and

  124. abused people of the world jesus

  125. resurrected so people like Mary

  126. Magdalene could have their mind freed

  127. could have their hearts renewed could

  128. have the bondage of their sin and their

  129. addiction broken when Jesus came out of

  130. that tomb Mary Magdalene came out with

  131. him romans 6:4 says "Just as Christ was

    Romans 6:4

  132. raised from the dead by the glory of the

  133. father we too may walk in the newness of

  134. life." Jesus has the power to bring the

  135. broken and perfect and abused to a new

  136. life because his resurrection was not

  137. just an event it was an invitation an

  138. invitation to walk in new life with

  139. Jesus an invitation to break the cycle

  140. of suffering that some of you have been

  141. under your whole lives then there was

  142. another Mary the other Mary as we know

  143. from history was the mother of James the

  144. disciple we don't know anything else

  145. about her because her testimony was not

  146. movie worthy but I love that she's there

  147. too because she also represents a group

  148. of people she represents the people who

  149. are overlooked the people who are quiet

  150. and meek the normal people of the world

  151. jesus resurrected so people like Mary

  152. the mother of James could have a a new

  153. life and a new voice so they could be

  154. heard and appreciated for who God made

  155. them to be and so friends today you

  156. could be a tourist you could go to see

  157. the empty tomb but it's just there to be

  158. a testimony to the new life that Jesus

  159. provides for the most broken imperfect

  160. abused marginalized overlooked normal

  161. people on earth so they're there at the

  162. tomb and they're expecting to weep and

  163. cry and grieve but something else

  164. happens in verse two says there was a

  165. violent earthquake because an angel of

  166. the Lord descended from heaven and

  167. approached the tomb he rolled back the

  168. stone and was sitting on it there was a

  169. violent earthquake this is common place

  170. in scripture when a a movement of God

  171. occurs this happened when Jesus was

  172. crucified there was an earthquake when

  173. Jesus rose from the dead there was an

  174. earthquake when Isaiah met with the Lord

  175. in the temple there was an earthquake

  176. when Paul and Silas were breaking out of

  177. the Philippian jail by singing praise

  178. songs there was an earthquake when the

  179. the Ten Commandments were given to Moses

  180. on the top of Mount Si there was an

  181. earthquake when God does something in

  182. your life the net result is a

  183. shakeup because God needs to shake off

  184. the things that keep you from him but

  185. don't think of this shakeup as something

  186. that is like punishment it's actually

  187. preparation for what God is doing under

  188. the tectonic plates of your soul so

  189. don't fear the shakeup prepare for it

  190. like one of those doomsday preppers man

  191. have your go bag by the door and when

  192. things go bad when the shakeup happens

  193. you can grab the bag and you can run to

  194. the the strong tower that is Jesus

  195. Christ your Lord jesus talks in the

  196. sermon on the mount about two people

  197. this is closing statements he gives you

  198. a choice he says "You can be like the

  199. wise man that build his house on the

  200. rock." Meaning that you can be like the

  201. wise man and build your life around the

  202. teachings that you just heard in the

  203. sermon that Jesus preached or you can be

  204. like the foolish man and build your

  205. house on the sand but then he says

  206. something prophetic he says the storms

  207. will come and the person that built

  208. their life on the teachings of Jesus

  209. Christ that built their life on the rock

  210. they will be unshaken

  211. see the Lord is a strong tower and he

  212. wants you to run to him to seek shelter

  213. in him to be saved from the storm the

  214. unshakable fact is this jesus was born

  215. he existed before that but he was born

  216. of a virgin in Bethlehem he lived a

  217. perfect and sinless life he died on the

  218. cross for your sin he rose from the dead

  219. he ascended back into heaven and one day

  220. friends he's coming back for all that

  221. that belongs to him

  222. i visited my dad last week and he loves

  223. to watch the news i don't love to watch

  224. the news because it bums me out but he

  225. loves to watch the news so we watch the

  226. news and it seemed like every story on

  227. the news was about a shaking shaky

  228. markets and shaky nations and and shaky

  229. communities like all this shaking is

  230. taking place and I was kind of excited

  231. uh after watching that because my heart

  232. was not as broken as it usually is

  233. because I realized that my hope is not

  234. based on anything other than the strong

  235. tower named Jesus whose voice calms the

  236. storms whose voice made the sun stand

  237. still whose voice broke light into the

  238. darkness like my hope is not based on

  239. anything earthly i don't need for the

  240. stuff to change on the news in order for

  241. me to have hope because my hope is

  242. anchored in the heavenly realms with

  243. Jesus so when the world starts shaking

  244. what you need to do is run to Jesus

  245. because he says all who call on the name

  246. of the Lord will be

  247. saved that all is all inclusive by the

  248. way so there's an earthquake the angel

  249. of the Lord has descended from heaven

  250. and he purged the tomb rolled back the

  251. stone and was sitting on it his

  252. appearance was like lightning and his

  253. clothing was as white as snow and the

  254. guards were so shaken by the fear of him

  255. that they became like dead men see the

  256. Romans are terrified of the idea that

  257. the disciples would come and steal

  258. Jesus' body because they knew that Jesus

  259. had talk about talked about coming back

  260. from the dead so they wanted to make

  261. sure that the disciples had no access to

  262. the body of Jesus so history tells us

  263. that up to 30 centurions were stationed

  264. around the tomb we're also told that

  265. that stone that they put in front of the

  266. tomb was no ordinary stone this stone

  267. weighed 4,000 pounds it also had the

  268. symbol of the Roman government on it

  269. also the symbol of Pontius Pilate with

  270. these two big ropes that went around it

  271. to fasten the symbol in the front so

  272. anybody that came near the tomb would

  273. see that this is government property

  274. this this belongs to

  275. Rome but on Easter Sunday an angel came

  276. down the soldiers fall and the seal is

  277. broken and that stone stone which

  278. symbolized a barrier to entry is now a

  279. seat for the angel that that stone that

  280. symbolized a barrier to entry is now uh

  281. it's a place it's a stage where the

  282. angel can preach the very first

  283. postresurrection sermon and it's as if

  284. the angel is saying that this stone

  285. doesn't get to define your narrative

  286. anymore it that stone he's saying this

  287. stone does not get to block your access

  288. to Jesus your idol your sin your trauma

  289. your guilt your shame your addiction

  290. anything that would block you from Jesus

  291. does not get to define your narrative

  292. anymore it's not a part of your story

  293. because Jesus through the power of his

  294. Holy Spirit has come down symbolically

  295. and flipped away that stone moved it out

  296. of the way so you have direct access to

  297. the undeniable Messiah friends I'm

  298. convinced this morning that if Jesus

  299. could do that 2,000 years ago he can

  300. still do it

  301. today so in verse 5 the angel told the

  302. women "Don't be afraid because I know

  303. you were looking for Jesus who is

  304. crucified he is not here for he has

  305. risen just as he said come and see the

  306. place where he lay." I love that come

  307. and see the place where he lay imagine

  308. you're one of the soldiers the

  309. centurions and you got to go back to

  310. Pontius Pilate and tell them about this

  311. angel that came down like a lightning

  312. bolt from heaven and how that that stone

  313. that symbolized all of Roman super all

  314. of Rome's superiority all of their power

  315. how it was just flipped out of the way

  316. see in that moment what they'd be

  317. communicating with Pontious Pilot is the

  318. fact that there is a new king of kings

  319. there's a new Lord of Lords there is a

  320. man who is not under the control of Rome

  321. the stone was not get this the stone was

  322. not rolled away so Jesus could get out

  323. jesus can walk through walls we know

  324. that from scripture he did not need an

  325. angel to open the door for him so what

  326. is he teaching us by rolling the stone

  327. away he's teaching us that we need to

  328. come and put our head inside that tomb

  329. and see that it is empty it wasn't for

  330. him it was for us it was for the Marys

  331. that came to the tomb so they could look

  332. see they came and they were anticipating

  333. a dead Jesus now friends I understand

  334. how Easter works i know that some of you

  335. are here and some of you are watching

  336. online and the only reason you're here

  337. and the only reason you're watching

  338. online is because mom or grandma or

  339. grandpa or somebody told you that you

  340. had to be in church on Easter Sunday so

  341. first of all let me say I'm so glad

  342. you're here thank you for coming but

  343. also I get it i get it i understand that

  344. some of you are not here looking for

  345. Jesus you're just here out of obligation

  346. and so I love this scripture because

  347. this is Jesus saying to you "Hey pop

  348. your head in the tomb and check it out."

  349. That's what this whole sermon series has

  350. been about i want you to be able to look

  351. in the tomb and see that Jesus really is

  352. the person that he claimed to be put

  353. your head inside the tomb and see that

  354. Jesus is alive he's made the invisible

  355. kingdom visible he is the proof of what

  356. is hoped for the reality of what is not

  357. seen it's all we talked about in last

  358. week's message

  359. this is an opportunity for you to deal

  360. with Jesus because friends you got to

  361. deal with Jesus he is undeniably the

  362. person that he claimed to be there's

  363. historical evidence there's biblical

  364. evidence there's evidence in creation

  365. that points to God and points to Jesus

  366. no single person has changed our world

  367. more than Jesus Christ so we are all

  368. faced with this singular reality we have

  369. to do something with Jesus we either put

  370. him in a box on the shelf and pretend

  371. he's not real put him back in the tomb

  372. and roll the stone in front or we put

  373. our head in that tomb and see hey Jesus

  374. is alive we can't explain the

  375. resurrection scientifically we have no

  376. way of explaining the resurrection but

  377. that resurrection can explain us we are

  378. people who have come alive by virtue of

  379. what Jesus did for us now the story

  380. continues in the gospel of John in John

    John 20 chapter mention

  381. chapter 20 in John chapter

    John 20:12

  382. 20 verse

  383. 12 but Mary stood outside the tomb and

  384. she was still

  385. crying and she was crying as she was

  386. crying she stooped to look into the tomb

  387. some of you you need to do that this

  388. morning look into the tomb look into

  389. this conversation about

  390. Jesus what did she see well she saw two

  391. angels in white sitting where Jesus'

  392. body had been lying one at the head and

  393. one at the feet and they said to

  394. her,"Woman why are you crying?" And she

  395. said "Because they've taken away my Lord

  396. and I don't know where they've put him."

  397. Russell Johnson says "Jesus invites us

  398. to stare at what is no longer there to

  399. remind us of what has been there the

  400. entire

  401. time what I thought was so sustainable

  402. what I thought was so concrete what I

  403. thought was so important to me and my

  404. family what I thought we should be

  405. building our lives upon I found out is

  406. simply dust."

  407. But there was something that I was

  408. missing the thing that I was missing was

  409. right there in front of me the whole

  410. time but I chose not to see it i chose

  411. not to see the presence of the

  412. resurrected Jesus calling out to me so

  413. when that angel says "Mary why are you

  414. crying?" She's like "Everything was

  415. great last Sunday." They were shouting

  416. "Hosana hosana." They wanted to make him

  417. king of kings they they wanted to to

  418. make him the king now everything is

  419. different why are you crying she says

  420. they took Jesus away they took Jesus

  421. away now this is not Mary's thought

  422. thought but it could be yours perhaps

  423. this morning you're blaming a they for

  424. the distance you feel between yourself

  425. and

  426. Jesus you're blaming a they for stealing

  427. your joy you're blaming a they for uh

  428. for not fulfilling their obligations for

  429. not sticking to their promises you're

  430. blaming a they for your lack of

  431. relationship with Jesus i would

  432. encourage you this morning to not let

  433. the they control your narrative because

  434. they should not have that much power

  435. over you because they did not die on a

  436. cross for your sin and they did not come

  437. back from the dead so therefore they do

  438. not have power over you to determine

  439. your relationship with Jesus so stop

  440. blaming the they come back to life that

  441. grief of your past is blinding you from

  442. the gift of your present so take some

  443. time and look into the tomb and see that

  444. he is not there because he's actually

  445. right here

  446. verse 14 it says having said this she

  447. turned around and she saw Jesus standing

  448. there but she didn't know it was Jesus

  449. woman a term of endearment Jesus said to

  450. her why are you crying who is it that

  451. you are seeking supposing he was the

  452. gardener she replied sir if you've

  453. carried him away tell me where you've

  454. put him and I will take him away Jesus

  455. said to her Mary and turning around she

  456. said to him in Aramaic Raboni which

  457. means teacher remember Jesus was a

  458. teacher he was a rabbi we talked about

  459. that last week so her teacher is now

  460. teaching her again mary's eyes were open

  461. when Jesus calls her by name she

  462. realizes that in that moment that Jesus

  463. had conquered death and the grave and

  464. that he's been raised to a new life and

  465. she also realizes in that moment that

  466. because Jesus is alive she can be alive

  467. she stopped looking for the living among

  468. the

  469. dead jesus is not found in a tomb he's

  470. found in a garden jesus is the gardener

  471. he's sewing seeds for your redemption

  472. he's planting flowers for your

  473. provision for Mary the tomb was just a

  474. pit stop on her way to a new life so

  475. perhaps today you need to get out of the

  476. grave

  477. maybe today you've you've looked into

  478. Jesus and you see hey this this is real

  479. this really h he's an undeniable

  480. historical figure that did all the

  481. things that that that the Bible says

  482. that he did there's no doubt about it it

  483. takes more faith to believe in something

  484. else than it does to believe in the

  485. resurrected Jesus so you've looked into

  486. the tomb but get you don't have to live

  487. there

  488. the tomb can be your pit stop on the way

  489. to the garden on your way to a new life

  490. so if you would just close your eyes for

  491. a moment we do this so you can

  492. focus you see some of you you

  493. maybe are here out of obligation maybe

  494. you're you're here and you're worshiping

  495. as if Jesus is still dead and the tomb

  496. is still closed and the stone is between

  497. you and the

  498. Lord i want you to see this morning that

  499. Jesus loved you enough to remove that

  500. stone from the

  501. equation that tomb is empty so that he

  502. could come and be with you so whatever

  503. that stone is for you maybe it's an

  504. addiction maybe it's pridefulness maybe

  505. it's a hurt a trauma that goes

  506. back many many years whatever that stone

  507. is that is keeping you from the joy of

  508. having new life in Jesus I just pray

  509. this morning that you would see that

  510. that stone has been rolled away jesus

  511. resurrection was not just an event it

  512. was an invitation an invitation for you

  513. to first of all put your head in the

  514. tomb and see hey Jesus is alive and then

  515. from there you get to walk into the

  516. garden and receive new life as Jesus
