That was

too much. Really, it was too much. I'm

Susan Buzzard.

Um, and that's You know what? I wanted

to introduce myself anyways. Um, but

first, let me just say

something. I am a pretty good liar. I'm

a really good liar. Um, I think that

when I was 12, like I saw an episode of

Dr. Phil and he said, "Fake it till you

make it." And I was like, "104, I can do

that." And so, like, I've done a lot of

things in my life just like I coached a

season of girls basketball and I don't

know anything about basketball. I hate

basketball. Um I refused to play

basketball as a 510 young person. Um and

but they asked me to coach girls

basketball and I was like, "Oh yeah, I

got that." And like we're in the middle

of a game and the referee did some kind

of crazy and the girl was like, "What

was that coach? What was that? What was

and I was like, "I have no idea

honestly. I just like I don't even

know." So here's the thing. I that's

it's not even on my one page of notes.

I'm telling you that

because I get a lot of us when we come

into this room, like this room

specifically, makes us feel like we have

to put something on or that we have to

fake something or we have to be

something. And I really believe

that the seven words on this paper that

I have to say tonight, like I really

believe that God gave me those to give

to you. But if you're sitting there with

your mask on and your pretend perfection

that you put on when you come into this

room, you're not going to get it. You

know what I'm saying? Um, so just like

admit it for a second, you don't even

know anything about basketball. Um, and

let's go to this word and see what um,

God can show us today. Let me pray real

quick. Holy God, I thank you um, for

this opportunity. God, I thank you for

this word that you've put on my heart

this week um, as I've been in my real

job. And I pray God that um you would

just help it to penetrate our hearts

tonight. Lord, it's in your name that I

pray. Amen. So, in my real job, back to

my introduction. Hi, I'm Susan. Um and

in my real job, I am a physical

education teacher. We don't like to be

called gym teachers. Um we like to be

called physical education teachers. And

something that I noticed this week is

that my physical education, my gym class

and the Bible have something in

common. Anybody have any

guesses? What my gym class? I think

there's only one person in this room

that has ever been in my gym class.

That Yeah, sure. Sure. Both both could

stink a little bit. Yeah, absolutely.

Maybe they have more in common than I've

realized. Um, here's the thing that I

realized this week that my gym class and

the Bible have in common, and that is

that they are

both full of

excuses.

So, she's been in my class. So, so many

excuses. Listen, I'm in 20 plus years of

teaching physical education. I every

morning I wake up and I think I've heard

it all. And then every day I go to

school and guess what? There's something

new. It keeps my job exciting really.

When I had this little boy, this young

man look me in the face one day. And of

course, like listen, here's the thing. I

understand that gym class hides a lot of

trauma for a lot of people, okay? That's

not lost on me, okay? But I really try

and do better, Harley. I really try and

do better. Like there are a lot of

things that I know have been wrong with

gym classes in the past that I try and

do better now. So, like I put out a week

at a glance and so I tell the kids what

we're going to be doing every day if

it's going to be like a workout or if

it's going to be a game like I try and

prepare them so that mentally and

emotionally they can come in prepared

for whatever that day is going to

entail. But also that means it gives

them time to prepare their excuses. Um,

and it's wild how they only get hurt

like right before workout days and not

right before like fun game days. It's so

strange how that happens. But like one

day I had a young man look me dead in

the face. And Miss Lynn, as a health

professional, you'll appreciate this. He

looked me in the face and he said, "I

really wanted to run today, but over the

weekend I tore all the ligaments in my

foot." And I was

like, "All of

them?" And he was like, "Yeah." And he

was walking totally normally, totally

fine. I was like, "All of them? Like you

went to the doctor?" He was like, "Yeah,

I went to the doctor." and he said, "I

tore all the ligaments in my foot." And

I was like, "How did he diagnose that?"

Like, "How many ligaments do you have in

your foot?" And he was like, "I don't

know, but they're all torn." All 112

ligaments. That's I was like, "What did

you do? How did you do that?" I was just

running playing with my cousin. Did you

run over a

landmine? What did you How did you run

and tear and your Miracle of all

miracles standing here before me with

112 ligaments. Not a single bone in your

foot is connected right now. They're all

just floating

about and you're standing here to be

able to tell. Like, bless your heart,

buddy. You go sit down because there's

no way. How could you possibly be

expected to participate in physical

education class with 111 torn ligaments

in your foot? Anyway, um, anybody here

have a good one? Anybody have a good

what what's your best excuse for getting

out of physical education class? Anybody

have one?

Teacher's pet. Got it. Got it. I'll

serve you so you don't yell at me.

How'd you get out? Did you Did those

work for you in the good old days, Nick?

The only class you like. See, those are

those are good kids to have. Anybody

else? Any good excuses? Any good excuses

out there? What's

yours? You sometimes fake sick. Oh,

listen. I get a lot of tummy aches. Lots

lots of tummy aches at the high school.

Here's the thing. Here's what I want you

to understand. This is what I Oh.

Oh, sorry. Sorry. Go ahead.

And you ate cereal for breakfast every

morning, right, Sandy?

Shameful. Sh. Shameful. You know what? I

bet that kid's mom didn't know he tore

every single ligament in his foot

either. Can't imagine that doctor's

bill. Anything else? I don't want to

miss anybody's really good excuses.

Okay, here's the thing. Let me tell you

this about because, you know, I spend

most of my time my everyday job, so

that's what I have to talk about. Here's

what I want you to understand about my

workouts. As a physical education

teacher, I use data. We do fitness

testing. And you know, whatever my kids

are weak at, like if they're if they're

weak at their cardiorespiratory

endurance, we need to improve that,

right? If they're weak with their

muscular strength endurance, we need to

improve that. So, I actually plan my

lessons, my workouts to improve them, to

help them, to build their strength up,

right? So, I mean, I spend hours I

collect all the data. I put it into

spreadsheets. I really do and I average

it and I see like are we improving in

this? Oh man, our flexibility hasn't

improved at all. We got to add more

stretching. We've got to add more this

into the things that we're doing so that

I can't listen. I don't ever my my

students don't believe me. I don't ever

wake up in the morning and say, "How can

I torture children

today? How can I hurt children and make

them hate school?" Like that's never my

intention. My motivation is always how

can I help them? How can I make them

stronger? So all these things that I

have planned that they're giving me

these excuses or copying papers to get

out of are all things that are going to

benefit them and make them better and

make them stronger. Yet what do they

give me? Their best.

know they give they come to me with

every reason why they can't do the thing

that I've asked them to do that I know

is in their best interest. Isn't that

crazy? It's absolutely insane that I

work so hard to plan this structured

activity that is going to make them

healthier, make them stronger, make them

more confident, make them better. Is it

going to be

easy? Probably not. No, it's going to be

a little bit hard, but if it wasn't

hard, they wouldn't get any stronger,

right? Yet, every day I go in with all

of these awesome plans to make these

people better and stronger. They just

come at me with excuses. And I start to

take it personally sometimes. And this

past week, I was really starting to take

it personally. And then I was at

lunchtime doing my little devotion and

it took me to the book of Jeremiah and I

was

like,

"What are we doing?" We do the exact

same thing to

God all the time. All the time. When we

think about the plans that God has for

us, listen, God later, we're not even

going to this chapter of Jeremiah. This

is a spoiler alert. Later in the book of

Jeremiah, because we're starting in one,

God says like, "I know the plans that I

have for you and their plans to prosper

you and to benefit you, not to hurt

you." Right? But we look at God. He

gives us these plans. He tells us what

he wants from us. And we say, "But I

tore every ligament in my foot. God, I

can't do it. I can't possibly do that.

God, I'm lactose intolerant.

Um,

so today we're going to look at

Jeremiah. Jeremiah chapter 1. Okay. And

Jeremiah 1 · chapter mention

here's where it starts because I think

that we need to get this from the

beginning. It said, but there's a bunch

of big words that I can't pronounce. I

mentioned that I teach health and

physical education, right? Okay. So,

there a bunch of big words that I can't

pronounce. But if we start in Jeremiah

chapter 1:es 1 through3, it says the

words of Jeremiah, son of some guy, one

of the priests of some place and da da

da da. That's the most important part.

Okay, son of he's a son of a priest.

Okay. So, what that means in the Old

Testament is that because see those

words I can't I don't know hillkai I

don't know hillkai um he was a son of a

priest and that means that Jeremiah was

supposed to be a priest right because

that's the way the priesthood worked in

the old testament is like if your dad

was a priest then you were raised

watching him and learning and then you

become a priest.

Right. And so Jeremiah was being trained

in the priesthood. And we also learn

this verse because of all the dates that

times that it tells us under king such

and such and the year of such and such

and whatnot and here and there. Um it

also tells us that Jeremiah is about 20

right now. So he's about 20 years old

and he has been his whole life basically

has been like you're going to be a

priest. Okay. And

then God comes to Jeremiah in Jeremiah

Jeremiah 1:4

1:4. And this is this is one of those

Jeremiah verses that lots of people

know. Um because God calls Jeremiah. He

says, "The word of the Lord came to me

saying, "Before I formed you in the

womb, I knew you. Before you were born,

I set you apart. I appointed you as a

prophet to the nations." Okay, so here's

the thing.

Jeremiah for 20 years now has being has

been being groomed to become a

a priest. Okay. And then God comes to

him and he

says before you were formed in your

mother's womb, I knew you and I consec I

set you apart and I appointed you to be

a prophet.

Are those the same

thing? That's a tricky question because

they kind of feel similar, right? But

are prophet and priest the same thing?

Pastor, master of theology? No, they're

not. This Listen, I have a masters in

health education.

Um, they're not the same thing. See,

here's the difference. A priest's job

was to follow the ritual law. Okay?

Okay, a priest's job was all laid out.

Okay, so every day they came to work and

they knew what they were doing and they

did the thing that needed done and then

that was it. Like that was their job.

Okay, that's what a priest did. A

prophet was tasked with something much

much different. A prophet had to take

the word of God to the people. So, a

prophet spent their time praying,

talking to God, listening for the word

of God. And then when God gave them the

word, because it wasn't written all in

this book right here. When God gave them

the word, it was their job to go out and

say whatever that word was. Whether the

people wanted to hear that word, whether

that was a fun and happy word or it was

a a mean and scary word, a prophet's job

was to hear what God said and then take

God's word and share it with the people.

So, it was a very different job than

what Jeremiah had been planning on and

then what Jeremiah had been preparing

for. Okay? So I I tell you that to say

like it's not lost on me that every

ligament in Jeremiah's foot was torn at

this point. Like he felt he just ate

seven bowls of cereal and a milkshake.

Okay. He was absolutely 1,000% out of

his depth when God

said, "I appointed you. I've set you

apart. I've consecrated you from before

you were ever even conceived. I set you

apart to be a prophet because the

prophet job is a very different. It's a

very hard job. And so we have to like I

I'm trying I'm being comp I'm trying to

be compassionate here because I find

myself not being that way when people

come at me with excuses. But sometimes

we have to see the big picture, right?

And so we would think like, "Wow, God

called you to be a prophet." Yeah, God

called him to be a prophet, but he was

absolutely out of his depth. That would

be horrifying. It would be like if you

graduated from dental school and God was

like, "All right, you're going to make a

great lawyer now." Like, you're not

prepared for that. You hadn't planned

for that. You hadn't spent your hundreds

of thousands of dollars on educating

yourself for that. Like, that would be

horrifying, right? So, what we see next

when God says, "I appointed you as a

prophet to all nations," is we see the

same human response that we give God all

the time. And that is a big

fat excuse, right? And Jeremiah has two

of them and they're both pretty good,

right? So in Jeremiah

1 six it says, "Alas, sovereign Lord, I

do not know how to

speak." Okay, weird. Like it'd be like a

kid coming to me and be like, "Hey, I

need to tell you my excuse. My excuse is

I don't know how to talk." Well, that's

weird because I feel like you're doing

it right now. Um, so I'm not really sure

how God handled that, but he said, "I do

not know how to speak. I am too young."

So, those were two separate things. A

lot of I read this in a lot of different

texts, and don't correct me if I'm

wrong.

Um, but in some of them, it just reads

with a comma. I'm not an English teacher

either. Um, but sometimes it seems like

Jeremiah is saying, "I don't know how to

speak because I'm too young." Right? But

um the most conclusive thing that I got

is that those were two separate excuses

like Jeremiah is saying number one God

my number one reason is I don't know how

to speak like I don't know how to take

your word and give it to the people and

then my number two reason if you don't

accept that excuse which I do have kids

that come with like a laundry list

sometimes they're like okay first this

and I'm like oh that's okay because

we're not doing that today. They're like

okay well then I'll try this one. Um so

that's what is happening here. Jeremiah

is like, "First, I I I don't know how to

do that. Like, I'm not trained for that.

I can do the rituals. I understand the

lists. I understand doing all the

things." Okay. But then he says, "But

also, I'm too young. No one's going to

listen to me." Like Jeremiah at this

time was only 20, and people live to be

hundreds of years old, right? So, like,

who's going to listen? He's like a baby.

He like be like be like a little tiny

baby coming up here and trying to give

us the word of God. That'd be wild. So

Jeremiah comes to God and he gives him

these excuses. Now let me ask you this.

God's plan for Jeremiah to be a prophet.

Is that because he hates

Jeremiah? No. Is he trying to make

Jeremiah a worse

person? No. Okay. God's plan for

Jeremiah to be a prophet is not only for

Jeremiah's greater good. It's for all of

Israel's greater good. Right? So, we

have to understand that God has this

good plan that that's going to happen

here. But Jeremiah

has excuses.

Now, here's the thing that I did not

know is when someone gives you an

excuse, you allowed to not accept

it. This is lifechanging for me this

week. Like I seriously next week we're

going to go and we're going to do a

little workout on the track. I call it

the muscle mile. And kids are going to

come to me and they're going to say, "I

broke my arm." And I'm going to say, "I

do not accept. I don't know what to tell

you. I do not accept your excuse." Um,

but that's basic like I love that God

just takes Jeremiah. Jeremiah says, "But

I can't because this and I can't because

this and I can't because this." And God

just says

like this is the plan. Like I heard you,

but I'm not hearing you. Right? So God

says, "But the Lord said to me, do not

say I'm too young." All right? So do not

say you're lactose intolerant. Okay?

Don't give me your excuses. Do not say

I'm too young. You must go to everyone I

send you to and say whatever I command

you to. Do not be afraid of them. For I

am with you and I will res and I will

rescue you, declares the Lord. Okay, so

this is the big thing that I want for us

to get from this tonight is that like

we're we're going to come at God with

all kinds of excuses. And right now I

know that God is speaking to hearts and

God is working on hearts. And God is

asking some of us to do big and

difficult things. And for months, maybe

years, we've been coming back at God and

we've been saying, "But like this is not

a good time, God." Or that would be

really hard because of this, God. Like

we have been coming at God with all

these excuses. And I'm here to tell you

tonight is that God heard your

excuses, but he does not care. Because

listen, God's plan for

you is not to make your life worse,

right? His plan for you is not for

destruction. Like God's plan, just like

his plan for Jeremiah, it was not easy.

If you take your adventure

Bible and you read the highlights like

people with ADD like me do, listen,

listen to what happens. Right? So this

is chapter one. Chapter one, God calls

Jeremiah. Chapter 20, Jeremiah is

Jeremiah 20 · chapter mention

beaten. Chapter 26, Jeremiah is

threatened. Chapter 28, Jeremiah versus

the false prophet. Chapter 32, Jeremiah

buys a field. Good for Jeremiah. Um,

chapter 38, Jeremiah in a cyan. I was

like, that's strange. Chapter 40,

Jeremiah is set free. Right? So like

listen, God didn't say, "Hey Jeremiah, I

have something really easy I want you to

do for me today." God said, "Jeremiah, I

want you to do something totally

opposite, something you feel absolutely

unequipped for, something that you feel

absolutely unprepared for, something

that is horrifying. But that's what I

want you to do. And I'm not accepting

no. And I'm not accepting your excuses.

But the bottom line is that God's plan

for you is not only to prosper you, but

also the people around you. God's plan

for Jeremiah was not just for Jeremiah.

It was for the greater good of the whole

nation. So when we think about coming to

God with our excuses, we need to

recognize that God has such good and

such big plans for us. And it might not

be what we've trained for 20 years for.

It might not. It might be something

totally different. But if we're willing,

if we're willing to step back and to

surrender all of those plans that we

have for ourselves and stop making all

of those excuses, then God is going to

be able to do great things through us.

Jeremiah's life was hard. Obviously, I

read the cliff notes, but it was hard.

Okay? But God did

incredibly amazing things through the

life of Jeremiah. And and that's that's

the final note is that, you know, if you

if you will allow God, he will do

amazing things through your life. But we

have to stop making excuses because

frankly, God's not accepting them

anyways. The

end. Y'all stand in worship.

Well, I want to thank y'all for coming

out. I would like to say that tonight is

the last

encounter for two folks who have been

here from the very beginning from like

the first practice all the way up. Alex

and

Um, so I want to thank

y'all. So, I want to thank you all for

your dedication and all the late

practices and changing keys and changing

planning center. But it's been awesome

to watch y'all grow spiritually and

watch y'all grow musically. From the

time we started, it's been incredible.

It's been about a year and a half, a

long journey for those of you who

haven't been here uh when we first

started our encounter. I want to thank

y'all. You're going to NC State, which

is the best school in the world. Go

States.

And he's he's right back here. He's

right back. Got alumni here. Uh and then

Hayden is going to serve our country in

the US Army. So, yeah.

So, I am incredibly proud of these two

kids. I call them my kids. Um, and I

just can't wait to see what God has in

planned for y'all as you go. So, thank

y'all very much for your hard

work. Yeah. Let's pray together. God,

what an awesome time we have.

like this and just praise you for for

who you are, for what you've done. And

group up here who has been with us. I

thank you for Hayden and Alex who have

been with us from the beginning. And

God, I pray that as they're going on

into the next stage of their life that
