  1. want us to learn. It's in Jesus name I

  2. pray. Amen.

  3. All right. So today we're in the final

  4. part of a series called questions and

  5. answers and the the reason that I I've

  6. done this study, which is very different

  7. from a typical Sunday morning worship

  8. service. The reason we've done this

  9. study is so that you could be

  10. apologias or that's a Greek term which

  11. just basically means that you'll be able

  12. to defend your faith using tactics very

  13. similar to what the Apostle Paul used

  14. and what

  15. what the Apostle Peter used when they

  16. went into places they couldn't just bust

  17. out the scriptures cuz number one the

  18. Bible had not been canonized yet, but

  19. number two a lot of people were like

  20. well why would we believe in this Bible?

  21. Like you got to convince us to believe

  22. in the Bible before we're going to you

  23. know meet you there and so they'd had to

  24. argue for their faith using things like

  25. reason and evidence and giving

  26. thoughtful answers to people's

  27. questions. It's not about arguing people

  28. into a relationship with Christ. Like

  29. that doesn't work. If you can talk

  30. somebody into something then somebody

  31. else can talk them out of it. So what it

  32. is though, it's about removing these

  33. intellectual obstacles and barriers to

  34. show people that Christianity is

  35. reasonable, logical, and credible. So if

  36. you have not been following the series,

  37. this is part four. I would encourage you

  38. to go back to part one on any of our

  39. social media and just listen to all

  40. these in a row and hopefully it'll

  41. strengthen your faith and if you don't

  42. have faith maybe it'll lead you into a

  43. saving faith. But we've talked about

  44. things like is Christianity the one true

  45. religion or can I believe in the

  46. existence of God or can I trust in the

  47. Bible? And today we're going to ask the

  48. most important question of all, which is

  49. who is Jesus? What what is Christianity

  50. all about? Because if Jesus is not who

  51. he claimed to be, then Christianity and

  52. the Holy Scriptures are pointless. But

  53. if Jesus really is the son of God then

  54. we need to listen to everything that he

  55. has to say and we need to study his

  56. scripture and we need to learn about God

  57. because those things that matter they

  58. matter enormously if Jesus really is who

  59. he says he is. Because Jesus prayed to

  60. his father. Jesus obeyed his father.

  61. Jesus lived and quoted and trusted the

  62. Bible. So if Jesus really is the son of

  63. God then the Bible's not just a

  64. collection of ancient writings. It's

  65. actually God revealing himself and his

  66. purpose to us in written form. And

  67. that's why I'm ending this series with

  68. the most important question of all which

  69. is why believe in Christianity or is

  70. Jesus really who he says he is? So the

  71. case for Christianity often revolves

  72. around four pillars. The first of which

  73. is the claims of Jesus. The second one

  74. is the gospel accounts. Matthew, Mark,

  75. Luke, and John. What what did they write

  76. about their time with Jesus? The third

  77. thing is the resurrection of Jesus and

  78. then lastly the message of Jesus. What's

  79. unique about Christianity apart from

  80. every other religion in the world. So

  81. let's start with the claims of Jesus.

  82. Jesus did not just point to God. Jesus

  83. claimed to be God. And so there's so

  84. many people out there that say well

  85. maybe Jesus is just a good teacher.

  86. Maybe he's a good man. Maybe he's a

  87. prophet, but

  88. is he really God's son?

  89. Well Huston Smith who wrote a book

  90. called The World's Great Religions says

  91. this.

  92. Buddha and Jesus impressed their

  93. contemporaries so much that they did not

  94. just ask who are you? They ask what are

  95. you?

  96. And Buddha would respond, oh I'm not a

  97. god.

  98. But Jesus responded I am the God of the

  99. Bible. Okay? So that separates Jesus

  100. from every other founder of every other

  101. religion. Jesus made some absolutely

  102. astounding claims. Jesus said of himself

  103. that he has the authority to forgive

  104. sins. If you look in Matthew chapter 9

    Matthew 9:2

  105. verse 2

  106. these are the words of Jesus.

  107. He says take heart son

  108. your sins are forgiven. And the people

  109. get upset. They're like only God can

  110. forgive sins and he's like, yeah, I know

  111. cuz that's who I am. Like he has the

  112. right to forgive sins because ultimately

  113. all sin is against Jesus. So he uniquely

  114. has the ability to forgive you of the

  115. sin because all sin ever committed is

  116. against Jesus. No no other prophet or

  117. religious founder could ever claim

  118. anything like that. Jesus claimed to

  119. have the authority to judge the world.

  120. His words again, Matthew chapter 16

    Matthew 16:27

  121. verse 27. He says I will come back to

  122. judge the living and the dead.

  123. And he's judging primarily on people's

  124. attitude toward him. Do they have saving

  125. faith or do they not? Do they have

  126. saving faith or

  127. do they not?

  128. He also says in John chapter 8:58 that

  129. he claimed to have an eternal existence.

  130. John 8:58 says before Abraham was

    John 8:58

  131. I am.

  132. Before Abraham was I am. And this

  133. infuriated the Jews so much that they

  134. tried to kill him by throwing stones at

  135. him. Jesus is saying that he's older

  136. than Abraham, but that's not the main

  137. thing that made them angry. They're

  138. angry because not only did he say he

  139. preexisted Abraham, but he's also saying

  140. that he was there in Exodus chapter 3

    Exodus 3 chapter mention

  141. when Moses experienced the burning bush.

  142. There was this bush that was on fire and

  143. Moses went up to it and he took his

  144. sandals off cuz he realized it was holy

  145. ground. The bush was on fire, but it was

  146. not being consumed and so he gets some

  147. marching orders from the burning bush.

  148. The burning bush tells him to do some

  149. stuff and then Moses is like, well when

  150. I go do this stuff who do I say sent me?

  151. And the burning bush says tell them the

  152. great I am sent you.

  153. So now Jesus is claiming to be the great

  154. I am in the story in Exodus chapter 3.

    Exodus 3 chapter mention

  155. And this is why they tried to kill Jesus

  156. in that moment.

  157. Jesus accepted worship. Well anytime an

  158. angel shows up people fall down on their

  159. face because you know it's an angel,

  160. right? And the angels are always like,

  161. nope get up. Do not be afraid. I'm not

  162. God. I'm not Jesus. You don't have to

  163. bow down before me. We're just the

  164. messengers, right? But in Matthew

    Matthew 14:33

  165. chapter 14 verse 33 Jesus had walked on

  166. water to his disciples and it says they

  167. fell down at Jesus feet and said truly

  168. you are the son of God. And guess what?

  169. Jesus accepted their worship. He didn't

  170. say get up. He allowed them to worship

  171. him because he is God. Jesus claimed to

  172. be the son of God in John chapter 10

    John 10:36

  173. verse 36.

  174. He says why do you accuse me of

  175. blasphemy because I said I am God's son.

  176. I am God's son. That's not blasphemy.

  177. Jesus claimed to be equal with God.

  178. In John chapter 5 verse 18 again, these

    John 5:18

  179. are the words of Jesus. He's saying this

  180. about himself. Says therefore the Jews

  181. sought all the more to kill him because

  182. he not only broke the Sabbath, but he

  183. also said that God was his father making

  184. himself equal with God. And then in John

    John 10:33

  185. 10:33 they explain their reasoning. They

  186. say look we're not stoning you for any

  187. work but for blasphemy because you Jesus

  188. a mere man claimed to be God.

  189. Jesus claimed to be God's only son.

  190. Not only God's son, but God's only son.

  191. John 3:16 for God so loved the world

    John 3:16

  192. that he gave his only begotten son. What

  193. does that mean? Well the only son gets

  194. everything the father has.

  195. So now Jesus is saying everything that

  196. belongs to the Father God belongs to me

  197. and now people are absolutely furious.

  198. This is what led to him being nailed to

  199. a cross.

  200. Jesus claimed, get this, to be the only

  201. way to salvation. If you want to make

  202. people mad post that on social media

  203. today.

  204. That not all roads lead to the top of

  205. the mountain. There's only one and Jesus

  206. says I am the way the truth and the

  207. life. No one comes to the Father except

  208. through me. So here's our conundrum.

  209. Unlike Muhammad and Buddha and all these

  210. other religious leaders, Jesus isn't

  211. just pointing the way to God. He's

  212. saying I'm God. I've come to earth to

  213. find you, forgive you, save you, and

  214. adopt you into God's kingdom. So so

  215. imagine this. Let's say you're lost and

  216. you pull out your phone and you get on

  217. Google Maps and you put in your

  218. destination and the voice says, well

  219. turn left in 300 feet then turn right.

  220. And so you follow the instructions and

  221. you get to where you're going. The the

  222. GPS was helpful

  223. but it was just pointing the way to a

  224. destination. It's something that exists

  225. outside of you that's guiding you.

  226. And that's what every other religion

  227. does. Every other religion says here's

  228. the path, here's the steps, turn left in

  229. 300 feet and you will find yourself with

  230. God. But now imagine you pull out your

  231. phone and you call an Uber and the

  232. driver pulls up and you get in the back

  233. seat and the driver's like I don't need

  234. to know the directions because I know

  235. where you're going. I am the way to

  236. where you're going. I know the

  237. destination you need to get to. You

  238. don't have to explain anything to me.

  239. You don't have to do anything for me.

  240. You don't even have to pay me. I'm just

  241. going to get you where you need to go.

  242. Well that's what Jesus is saying. Jesus

  243. is saying I am God. I'm not going to

  244. just show you the way to get to God. I

  245. am God. I am life and you follow me and

  246. you will wind up where you want to be.

  247. Look every other voice says follow the

  248. path

  249. but Jesus says follow me.

  250. Now here's the thing. These are the

  251. audacious claims of Jesus. So we have to

  252. decide right here in this moment what

  253. are we going to do with these claims?

  254. C.S. Lewis called this the great

  255. trilemma. You've probably heard this a

  256. million times, but he says with Jesus

  257. you're forced into one of three

  258. categories. He is either Lord, a liar,

  259. or a lunatic.

  260. But Jesus can't be your homie. He can't

  261. be your mentor. He can't be your guide.

  262. He can't be your influencer. He can't

  263. even be your prophet.

  264. Because if what he says is true, then

  265. you have to make him Lord. If it's

  266. untrue, he's either a liar or a lunatic.

  267. Friends, it's all or nothing with Jesus.

  268. You cannot just admire him from a

  269. distance and ignore all the claims that

  270. he makes about himself. His claims about

  271. himself force you to make a decision.

  272. So, the gospel accounts

  273. are next on the list. And so, I I want

  274. to talk about those because I feel like

  275. the the gospel accounts are the thing

  276. that really are going to help you decide

  277. whether or not you want to be a follower

  278. of Jesus. So so, the question is maybe

  279. Jesus' followers embellished the stories

  280. to make him a legend.

  281. All right, so maybe that's true.

  282. Problem is, the New Testament was

  283. written just decades after the events of

  284. Jesus' life, and it was written by

  285. eyewitnesses and people that interviewed

  286. eyewitnesses. The New Testament is 100%

  287. first-hand accounts of what happened

  288. with Jesus. The gospels also contain

  289. irrelevant details that legends do not.

  290. So, Richard Bauckham, he's a professor

  291. professor of history at uh St. Andrews

  292. in Scotland. He says this, "The gospels

  293. contain many irrelevant details that

  294. don't help the plot or the characters.

  295. They're just things that were

  296. remembered." So, in John chapter 21,

    John 21 chapter mention

  297. Jesus tells the disciples, "Throw your

  298. nets on the other side of the boat,

  299. you'll catch a lot of fish." So, they

  300. throw their nets on the other side of

  301. the boat, they catch a lot of fish. But

  302. when it tells the story, it doesn't just

  303. say they caught a lot of fish. It says

  304. they caught 153

  305. fish.

  306. 153

  307. fish. Why is that important?

  308. Now, I know our fishermen in here are

  309. like, "Man, if I caught 153, I'm going

  310. to say 153. I don't know

  311. I get it.

  312. Why is that important to the story?

  313. Still a lot of fish, right?

  314. Mhm. If it was a legend, they wouldn't

  315. include that, but it's not. It's not a

  316. legend, so they include these things. In

  317. Mark chapter 15, you you have the the

    Mark 15 chapter mention

  318. man that was forced

  319. to carry Jesus' cross when Jesus

  320. couldn't carry it anymore. His name was

  321. Simon of Cyrene, and it says he is the

  322. father of Alexander and Rufus. Who are

  323. Alexander and Rufus?

  324. No one knows. You know why? Because

  325. they're never mentioned again. So, why

  326. in the world was this included in the

  327. story? It was included because it's a

  328. remembered detail. It was included

  329. because maybe their their father, Simon,

  330. had passed away. But when you're writing

  331. a gospel account, you want to make sure

  332. that people can go behind you and

  333. fact-check the stuff you said. So, there

  334. he's like, "Well, you may not be able to

  335. talk to their dad, but you can talk to

  336. Alexander and Rufus. You can ask them

  337. what happened on that day when Jesus was

  338. carrying his cross."

  339. Look, the gospels don't read like

  340. propaganda. Some people say, "Well, you

  341. know, his followers just wanted to get

  342. power, so they wrote these things about

  343. Jesus in order to take power away from

  344. the Roman government and get it back to

  345. themselves."

  346. If you were on a quest for power,

  347. you would not write down,

  348. "Forgive your enemies."

  349. Okay? If you were on a quest for power,

  350. you would not promote servant

  351. leadership. Yet, that's what the gospels

  352. promote.

  353. Mark recorded the Apostle Peter's

  354. account of his life with Jesus. And in

  355. that account, they included the story.

  356. Now, this is his biography. They

  357. included It's an autobiography,

  358. actually. They included the story of how

  359. Peter denied Jesus three times. Look, if

  360. you're writing a legend and you're

  361. trying to take power, this guy is the

  362. leader of the first church. He's the one

  363. Jesus said, "I will build my church on

  364. your testimony." You're going to be one

  365. of the founding fathers of the church.

  366. So, let's make sure when we write your

  367. story, we include the part where you

  368. denied me three times on my way to the

  369. cross.

  370. When you're writing a legend, you don't

  371. write that detail.

  372. Think about the apostles that were

  373. following Jesus, then all of a sudden he

  374. gets arrested and they all flee to the

  375. upper room and they hide like cowards in

  376. that room. Not one of them willing to to

  377. to follow Jesus as he's being judged.

  378. These are the leaders of the first

  379. church. Again, if you're writing a

  380. legend, you don't include these stories

  381. that make the leaders look terrible. And

  382. then ultimately, our hero, Jesus,

  383. suffers a humiliating defeat and death

  384. on a cross. That's not how you write a

  385. legend. Also, we got this real problem

  386. with eyewitnesses. Like,

  387. Jesus fed 15,000 people with a few

  388. loaves of bread and a few fish. And that

  389. was recorded in these gospels, which

  390. were written maybe 10 to 15 years after

  391. the events took place.

  392. So, don't you think that 15,000 people,

  393. upon reading about this miraculous

  394. event, if it were not true, don't you

  395. think at least one of them would step up

  396. and say, "Hey, that's a lie. That's not

  397. what happened."

  398. Think about Jesus raising Lazarus from

  399. the dead. He did it publicly in front of

  400. a whole town. Then they write about it.

  401. Don't you think somebody would have

  402. stood up and said, "Hey, he didn't

  403. really come back from the dead. That

  404. didn't happen." You can't record stuff

  405. like that in writing and then just

  406. expect everybody to to be on board if

  407. it's a lie or a hoax or an

  408. embellishment.

  409. You also have the uh

  410. words from C.S. Lewis, who was a

  411. professor at Oxford and Cambridge, and

  412. his studies were medieval and

  413. Renaissance literature. And so, he spent

  414. his whole life, one of the smartest men

  415. alive, spent his entire life studying

  416. legends. And he writes this, "I've been

  417. reading epics and legends all my life,

  418. and if you think the gospels are written

  419. as a legend, you don't know anything

  420. about legends."

  421. So, maybe he's not a legend. Maybe Jesus

  422. is just a liar or a lunatic.

  423. Well, listen to these words from Tim

  424. Keller.

  425. These are some of the claims that Jesus

  426. made about himself. These are some of

  427. the things we know about Jesus. This is

  428. the standard that Jesus set for himself.

  429. Jesus made high claims with without

  430. pompous behavior.

  431. Jesus showed tenderness without

  432. weakness. Jesus flexed strength without

  433. harshness. Jesus demonstrated humility

  434. without a lack of confidence. Jesus

  435. claimed authority without pride. Jesus

  436. had conviction without approachability

  437. with approachability. Jesus spoke of

  438. holiness without prejudice. Jesus

  439. described himself this way. Jesus said,

  440. "This is the standard of living. This is

  441. the perfection that God expects of all

  442. of us." Which is why he had to die to

  443. take our place on the cross cuz nobody

  444. can live up to that standard except for

  445. one person, and his name was Jesus.

  446. Look,

  447. he was the most famous man on Earth at

  448. the time, under immense scrutiny by

  449. multiple governments, and he set the

  450. standard for himself at perfection.

  451. So, don't you think if he's failed in

  452. any one way,

  453. any one way to live up to this standard

  454. that he set for himself, don't you think

  455. that would have made national news?

  456. Don't you think there'd be someone

  457. somewhere that would say, "Hey, this guy

  458. actually is not what he claimed to be."

  459. Even Pilate, while Jesus was going to

  460. the cross, he he washed his hands. He

  461. said, "Look, I I can't find one thing

  462. that this man has ever done wrong." This

  463. isn't a Christian. This man's not a

  464. believer.

  465. He just investigated and found out that

  466. there was no testimony

  467. that proves that Jesus isn't who he says

  468. he is. So, now we're still on the hook.

  469. We still have to decide,

  470. does that mean Jesus is Lord? So, let's

  471. talk about the resurrection.

  472. This is the the end-all be-all. If this

  473. is fake, then y'all don't have to show

  474. up next Sunday, okay? That's what the

  475. Apostle Paul told his church to. If this

  476. isn't If this isn't real, if he didn't

  477. come back from the dead, then y'all go

  478. find something else to do on a Sunday.

  479. See, there is a some thought out there

  480. that perhaps Jesus' followers saw him

  481. die, and they wanted to keep his legends

  482. alive.

  483. Well, there's problem with that. First

  484. of all, the resurrection of Jesus was

  485. seen by hundreds of witnesses. Let's

  486. read 1 Corinthians chapter 15, starting

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  487. in verse 3. By the way, this this was

  488. written just 15 years after Jesus died

  489. on a cross.

  490. Paul says, "For I passed on to you as

  491. most important what I also received,

  492. that Christ died for our sins according

  493. to the scriptures, that he was buried,

  494. that he raised on the third day

  495. according to the scriptures, and that he

  496. appeared to Cephas, then to the 12, then

  497. he appeared to Over get this, 500

  498. brothers and sisters at one time." And

  499. then he says, "Most of them are still

  500. alive." Why does he include that?

  501. Because he doesn't want you to just take

  502. his word for it. He wants you to read

  503. this and go and talk to some of those

  504. 500 people in that one instance that saw

  505. Jesus resurrected. By what By the way,

  506. he appeared multiple times to multiple

  507. hundreds of people as well.

  508. He says, "Look, I know some of them have

  509. fallen asleep,

  510. but some are still alive. Go talk to

  511. them." Then he says in verse 7, "Then he

  512. appeared to James and all the apostles.

  513. Last of all, as to one born at the wrong

  514. time, he also appeared to me." He

  515. appeared to Paul back when he was named

  516. Saul and he was persecuting the church

  517. by killing Christians. That's when Jesus

  518. showed up and revealed himself to Paul.

  519. So, you also have Paul's testimony to

  520. deal with as well. Why Why change? Why

  521. change your lifestyle if there was no

  522. resurrected Jesus?

  523. It's also important to note that women

  524. were the first people to witness the

  525. empty tomb.

  526. If you're going to start a legend or a

  527. rumor or a hoax at that time, you could

  528. not do so with women's testimony because

  529. this was a fiercely patriarchal society.

  530. They did not care what women had to say.

  531. They weren't even allowed to testify in

  532. court. And so, why start a rumor or a

  533. hoax on the testimony of women when

  534. women at this time were not even allowed

  535. to share their testimonies?

  536. Jesus' body was never produced. You know

  537. the quickest way to stop an uprising if

  538. you're Rome?

  539. Just show them the body.

  540. Pull the body out of the tomb, put it in

  541. the public square. Look, there's Jesus.

  542. He's dead. Be quiet. Go on about your

  543. business.

  544. Why couldn't they do that? Because the

  545. tomb was empty. And even the opponents

  546. of Jesus acknowledged that the tomb was

  547. empty. Look at Matthew chapter 28, verse

    Matthew 28:11

  548. 11.

  549. As they were on their way, some of the

  550. guards came into the city and reported

  551. to the chief priests everything that had

  552. happened. After the priests had

  553. assembled with the elders and agreed on

  554. a plan, they gave the soldiers a large

  555. sum of money and told them, "Say this,

  556. his disciples came during the night and

  557. stole him while he was sleeping." So,

  558. even the enemies of Jesus acknowledged,

  559. "Hey, we got a problem here. This tomb

  560. is empty. We don't know what happened.

  561. There were Roman centurions outside that

  562. if they lost the body would they'd have

  563. to sacrifice their own lives. So, I'm

  564. pretty sure those guys didn't let

  565. somebody come in here and steal the

  566. body. So, what do we do?" Well, we make

  567. up a story and we say that somehow some

  568. way those disciples who were hiding in

  569. the upper room as cowards were able to

  570. come in and steal this body in the

  571. middle of the night. We also have this

  572. other problem and it's called the

  573. disciples. They went from fearful to

  574. fearless.

  575. Like, what happened in these men's lives

  576. that they were in this upper room that

  577. afraid even mention the name of Jesus

  578. and then all of the sudden they're

  579. willing to die for their faith. Not just

  580. them, the thousands of other martyrs

  581. under the reign of Nero that were being

  582. put to death simply because they were

  583. believers in Jesus. Why would all of

  584. these people go to their graves if this

  585. was just a hoax?

  586. Then you have the rapid spread of

  587. Christianity among the Jews. They They

  588. even changed their day of worship from

  589. sun from Saturday to Sunday.

  590. The Jewish people are the most

  591. traditional people on earth. They have

  592. customs that date back centuries that

  593. have never been broken. They do not

  594. change what they do. Yet, all of the

  595. sudden there's a group of Jewish people

  596. that decide to move the day of worship

  597. from their Sabbath, which was Saturday,

  598. to Sunday. Why? Because that's the day

  599. that Jesus came back from the dead and

  600. they wanted to celebrate and worship on

  601. the day that Jesus came back from the

  602. dead. Then finally, you have James uh

  603. Jesus' brother James. He didn't even

  604. show up for the crucifixion to comfort

  605. his mom while her son was being put to

  606. death on the cross. That's why Jesus

  607. from the cross gave his mother Mary to

  608. John for John to look after her. And

  609. yet, all of the sudden James is writing

  610. a book of the Bible talking about how

  611. Jesus is Lord. What Like, what happens?

  612. How did his brother go from hating him

  613. to serving him and worshiping him as

  614. God? Well, the answer is because he met

  615. a resurrected Jesus or the most likely

  616. answer. So, imagine this. Let's say you

  617. got a crime scene and you're a CSI,

  618. you're a detective. Uh you come up on

  619. the scene and there's like no body, but

  620. there's hundreds of witnesses and

  621. they're all saying the same thing. And

  622. then you got these security guards that

  623. are saying the same thing as the

  624. witnesses. Then you have these main

  625. suspects that instead of lying have

  626. decided that even if it cost them their

  627. life, they're going to tell the truth

  628. about the incident. And you have this

  629. whole city that's worked up over this

  630. thing this this non-body related crime

  631. scene. Imagine you're that detective and

  632. you just go to your boss and you're

  633. like, "Hey, I think it's all just a

  634. rumor.

  635. I think people imagined it."

  636. That's not following that. You'd be

  637. fired immediately. There's way too much

  638. evidence for you to just say, "Well, uh

  639. I assume it didn't happen."

  640. And that's the explanation that the best

  641. fits the resurrection of Jesus, too.

  642. Because you have hundreds of witnesses.

  643. You have an empty tomb that nobody could

  644. produce a body for. You have enemies

  645. admitting that the tomb was empty. You

  646. have disciples going from fearful to

  647. fearless willing to lay down their lives

  648. for what they believe. Thousands of

  649. other people willing to do the same. And

  650. then you have these these these martyrs

  651. all over the world saying, "Yeah, this

  652. is actually we saw the resurrected

  653. Jesus." The resurrection and believing

  654. in it is not a blind leap of faith. It

  655. is not a blind leap of faith. It is the

  656. most logical explanation based on all of

  657. the evidence that we have both inside

  658. the Bible and outside of the scriptures.

  659. So, if Jesus really did rise from the

  660. dead, if the gospels are true, and if

  661. Jesus rose from the dead, and all this

  662. evidence points to this one thing, then

  663. perhaps we should listen to his message.

  664. We should at least allow him to speak to

  665. us um based on the the reasonable

  666. explanations that we've seen so far. So,

  667. here's the message of Jesus and it's

  668. very unique among all the other

  669. religions of the world. Because what

  670. someone may say is, "Okay, you've given

  671. me plenty of evidence, plenty of stuff

  672. to think about, and it is logical to

  673. conclude that Jesus was really who he

  674. said he is, that the Bible's true, that

  675. Christianity's real.

  676. But then they might say, "Well,

  677. but I'm a good person.

  678. So, I really don't need Jesus. Like, I'm

  679. not like my neighbor down the street.

  680. I'm a lot better than they are. So, I

  681. don't really need a relationship with

  682. Jesus." Well, think about it this way.

  683. Let's imagine a a mother who is raising

  684. a son and she sacrifices everything for

  685. her son. She gives him everything that

  686. she has to put him through college and

  687. help him be successful in life. And she

  688. teaches him three things. She says,

  689. "Hey, you're going to work hard, you're

  690. going to care for the poor,

  691. and you're going to tell the truth." And

  692. let's say he grows up to do all of those

  693. things,

  694. but he never calls her.

  695. Never checks in, never shows up, has no

  696. relationship really. And then someone

  697. says, "Well, what about your

  698. relationship with your mom?" And And

  699. he's like, "Well, that doesn't matter. I

  700. I'm a good person. I do everything she

  701. taught me to do."

  702. Friends, that's not enough.

  703. Because doing what she said and knowing

  704. her are two completely different things.

  705. God did not create you just to follow a

  706. set of rules. God created you for a

  707. personal relationship with him.

  708. And because of that,

  709. you have to make your relationship with

  710. God right.

  711. It doesn't matter what good you do. The

  712. main thing Your Your main problem is not

  713. not morality. It's not moral failure.

  714. Your main problem is the fact that you

  715. have a broken relationship with God. And

  716. it really doesn't matter how wonderful

  717. you are. You have to repair that

  718. relationship. And here comes

  719. Christianity's unique claim. No other

  720. religion will offer this to you except

  721. Christianity.

  722. And that's the fact that God, who

  723. created you, entered the world to seek

  724. you out. To find you.

  725. The Son of Man came to seek and save

  726. those which were lost. So, Jesus took

  727. our guilt, our shame, our sin, and he

  728. took it upon himself and nailed it to

  729. the cross. He lived the life that we

  730. could never live, a life of perfection,

  731. and he died the death that we could

  732. never die, a sacrificial death that

  733. would pay the price for all of

  734. humanity's sins.

  735. Friends, salvation is by grace. You do

  736. not earn it. And that's the unique

  737. message of Christianity. We are

  738. forgiven. We are saved. We are adopted

  739. into God's family not because of what we

  740. do, but because of what Jesus has done

  741. for us.

  742. Friends, we did not turn to God out of

  743. fear. We turn to God out of gratitude.

  744. First John chapter 4, verse 19, we love

    1 John 4:19

  745. God because he first loved us.

  746. So, now we're left with the problem C.S.

  747. Lewis was talking about, liar, lunatic,

  748. Lord. Which one is it?

  749. So, we're in a courtroom. We're on the

  750. jury we jury we've heard all of the

  751. eyewitness testimony. We've heard all of

  752. the expert witnesses speak. We've We've

  753. done all of the cross-examinations. The

  754. evidence has been presented from every

  755. conceivable angle and now it is time for

  756. us to make a verdict.

  757. And what we can't really do is just walk

  758. out into that courtroom and say, "Well,

  759. I need more time to think about it. I

  760. I'll decide later."

  761. Because not deciding is actually

  762. deciding, by the way.

  763. That's still a decision.

  764. And that's where some of you are today.

  765. Over the last 4 weeks you've seen the

  766. evidence. You've seen the evidence that

  767. that Christianity provides one of the

  768. most, if not the most, reasonable answer

  769. to all of life's big questions. You

  770. You've been presented with the evidence

  771. that the most likely explanation for

  772. life and creation is the existence of

  773. God. You've been given the evidence that

  774. the Bible gives you the most logical,

  775. comprehensive worldview available.

  776. You've been placed in a situation based

  777. on the claims of Jesus where you have to

  778. conclude that Jesus is either a liar, a

  779. lunatic, or the Lord. We We've seen the

  780. reliability of the gospel accounts.

  781. We've seen the evidence of the

  782. resurrection. We've seen the the unique

  783. message uh of God's amazing grace that's

  784. been demonstrated to us by Jesus'

  785. sacrificial gift on the old rugged

  786. cross.

  787. So, the question should no longer be,

  788. "Is there enough evidence?" The question

  789. should be, "What are we going to do with

  790. this evidence?"

  791. So, imagine you're you're standing

  792. outside a house and it's cold, but it's

  793. dark, it's quiet. Maybe that cabin in

  794. the woods I was talking about a couple

  795. weeks ago.

  796. And And you're alone. And then suddenly,

  797. a door opens.

  798. And there's light that's shining through

  799. and you see a table inside to the house

  800. and the the table's been prepared for

  801. you.

  802. And there's a man at the door and he's

  803. welcoming you in. He said, "Look, I

  804. prepared this this place for you." And

  805. it And then he says, "It does not matter

  806. why you're out in the cold. It does not

  807. matter why you're you're you're in this

  808. position you're in. The only thing that

  809. matters is that you are welcome here."

  810. And he invites you into the house.

  811. Well, friends, that's what

  812. Jesus has done. That's what uh

  813. That's what is through his life and

  814. through his death and through his

  815. resurrection, he has opened that door to

  816. God's kingdom for you.

  817. He's opened the door so that you can

  818. have a personal relationship with God.

  819. So, that door is open for you. Not

  820. because you earned it, not because you

  821. knocked it down, but because Jesus

  822. opened it for you with the cost of his

  823. life. Why? Because he loves you.

  824. You are the joy that was set before him,

  825. so he endured the cross. So, all that's

  826. left today

  827. >> [music]

  828. >> is for those of you that have not

  829. stepped into that door to step in.

  830. So, I'd ask if you would to just kind of

  831. bow your heads for a moment and try to

  832. to focus your minds on what the Holy

  833. Spirit is saying to you.

  834. And even if you don't have faith, I want

  835. you to understand that the Holy Spirit

  836. still speaks to you because Jesus came

  837. specifically to love you

  838. and to save you.

  839. So, bow your heads, close your eyes, and

  840. just think for a moment. Picture

  841. yourself. Are you inside the house at

  842. that place where where Jesus has

  843. provided everything for you?

  844. Are you inside the house where you know

  845. that the literally the worst thing that

  846. could happen to you personally is that

  847. you die and you wake up in heaven?

  848. Is that your reality? Are you living

  849. under the provision and the care of

  850. Jesus here on earth? Are you outside in

  851. the cold?

  852. Well, friends, if you find yourself

  853. outside in the cold

  854. looking in, I would hope that over the

  855. last 4 weeks you've received enough

  856. evidence and enough support to believe

  857. that

  858. it's reasonable to conclude that Jesus

  859. really is who he says he is. And if he

  860. is who he says he is, then

  861. then God is real, the Bible is real,

  862. Christianity is real, and this is

  863. something [music] that

  864. maybe I should investigate further.

  865. And as you walk down that path and get

  866. closer to the house, you realize, "Wow,

  867. this is actually [music]

  868. This is what I was made for. This is

  869. what I was created for. This is what

  870. I've been missing in my whole life. I I

  871. I've had this hole in my heart, and I

  872. never knew what it was, and I tried to

  873. fill it with all kinds of other stuff.

  874. But now I realize that that nothing

  875. could ever fill that void except for a

  876. personal relationship with God. Yeah,

  877. I'm a good person, I do good things, but

  878. the main problem I have is that I have a

  879. broken relationship with my creator.

  880. Well, the good news for you today is

  881. that you don't have to do anything but

  882. step into that door.

  883. Step through that threshold.

  884. Walk into that relationship with Christ.

  885. And the way that you do that, according

  886. to scripture, is through faith.

  887. So, if you'd like to place your faith in

  888. Jesus today, you can pray out loud, you

  889. can pray in your heart.

  890. But just say something like this. And as

  891. long as you mean it from your mind and

  892. your heart, God says you'll be saved.

  893. Just say something like this. Say

  894. Say, "God, I realized that I am a

  895. sinner.

  896. I'm not perfect.

  897. And God, I realize that

  898. I need a savior.

  899. And I believe

  900. that that savior's name

  901. is Jesus.

  902. I believe he's God's son.

  903. I believe he died on a cross.

  904. And I believe he came back from the

  905. dead.

  906. And that mustard seed-sized faith, the

  907. scriptures say, is enough for the Holy

  908. Spirit to come and live within you.

  909. To to grow your faith, to help you

  910. become the person that God created you

  911. to be. And there's nothing that you can

  912. ever do from this day forward that would

  913. separate you from the love of God.

  914. This is not a contract. This is a

  915. covenant. God holds the covenant. He

  916. holds the promise. There's nothing you

  917. can do to lose it.

  918. So, now you're in that relationship with

  919. Christ. You say, "Well, what do I do

  920. next?" Well, the Bible says the next

  921. thing you do is you make it public.

  922. You let people know about the decision

  923. you made. And you do that through

  924. baptism.

  925. So, if you [music] made a commitment to

  926. Christ today or over the last few weeks,

  927. I would encourage you just send me an

  928. email or call me, text me. Let me know

  929. so I can celebrate with you and also

  930. show you what those next steps would

  931. look like. So, God, thank you for what

  932. you've done in our hearts today. Thank

  933. you for the way that you've met us right

  934. where we're at. And Lord, for those that

  935. came into your house for the first time

  936. today, I just want to celebrate the

  937. decision that they made. Lord, thank

  938. you, God, for drawing [music] them in.

  939. And Lord, we know that our mission is

  940. still vast, and there's still so many

  941. that need to hear. So, send us out from

  942. this place with the gospel in our

  943. hearts, in our minds, and our tongues

  944. >> [music]

  945. >> so that others could learn about the

  946. goodness of God. In
