  1. for me anyway. Hey, would you join me in

  2. uh Galatians chapter 3? Galatians

Galatians 3 chapter mention Galatians 3 chapter mention

  3. chapter 3.

  4. Was walking down the hallway this

  5. morning and a good brother pulled me

  6. aside. He was like, "Hey, you know

  7. you're not starting on zero today." I'm

  8. like, "What?" He's like, "No, you're

  9. starting on Jesus and that means you're

  10. starting on victory." And I was like,

  11. "Yeah, I need that like every morning."

  12. I was like, "Dude, can you come to my

  13. house and give me some inspirational

  14. quotes like that every morning?" That's

  15. what that's a way to get a day started,

  16. man. But it is so true. We're starting

  17. on Jesus today. We're starting in

  18. victory. And I hope that that resonates

  19. with your soul as we uh begin our our

  20. new study um today. So, let's go to the

  21. Lord in prayer, then we'll get started.

  22. Father, first of all, I just want to

  23. thank you for the privilege to come and

  24. and teach your word. I thank you for the

  25. opportunity to uh just gather with my

  26. brothers and sisters in Christ. And

  27. Lord, it is awesome that you bring us

  28. together on the first day of the week so

  29. we can encourage one another to good

  30. works. And so I received that today. So

  31. Lord, help me to give that back to my

  32. faith family. Father, I just want to

  33. lift up Reese Megs. I thank you for the

  34. incredible uh work that you've already

  35. done in that little girl's life. And

  36. Lord, I pray that you would continue to

  37. uh heal her, that she would be

  38. completely uh free from cancer, and that

  39. her family would be supported and

  40. sustained as they uh take care of her. I

  41. pray for Chase Tatum and his family as

  42. well, that you would just meet them

  43. where they're at and wrap your loving

  44. arms around them. And for all the

  45. concerns that we bring to the table

  46. today, I pray that you would just help

  47. us to be able to know that we are not

  48. praying to an empty vacuum in space. We

  49. are praying to our heavenly father. It's

  50. in his name we pray. Amen.

  51. Tim Keller had a quote and that quote

  52. is, "Prayer is the key to everything a

  53. Christian should do and be." And that's

  54. going to be our our northstar quote for

  55. the summer. Uh prayer is the key to

  56. everything a Christian should do and be.

  57. Now, I'm not a ashamed to admit that

  58. chat GPT has become my second father.

  59. Sorry, Dad. Um but but it's true. I

  60. mean, I need to fix the little plunger

  61. thingy on the back of the toilet, and

  62. what do I do? I go to chat GPT. It tells

  63. me how. I need to to replace the fuel

  64. filter on my mower. I call Greg Gregory.

  65. He doesn't pick up. So then I go, "All

  66. right, fine. Chad GPT, teach me how to

  67. do this." I need to get Art's new mic

  68. working correctly. I ask Chad. Uh, I

  69. need to learn to get the stain out of a

  70. shirt that I'm trying to sell on eBay. I

  71. asked Chad. Um, trying to take the most

  72. efficient route to New York City for,

  73. get this, my 25th wedding anniversary

  74. this summer. LET'S GO. YEAH.

  75. MY WIFE loves me so much she left town

  76. on our anniversary, so that's cool. Um,

  77. no big deal. It's just 25 of them. Uh,

  78. but anyway, I'm trying to take the most

  79. efficient route to New York City this

  80. summer in July. And I and I asked Chad

  81. and it tells me exactly how to do that

  82. and save the most amount of money. It's

  83. crazy. I feel like Iron Man. I feel like

  84. Tony Stark. I got my own personal Jarvis

  85. that just teaches me anything I want to

  86. know at any time. But what if I want to

  87. have a deeper relationship with God?

  88. What if I want to have a deeper

  89. relationship with God? Like chat GPT

  90. can't do that. AI can't do that for you.

  91. There's no life hack for that. There's

  92. no YouTube tutorial that will deepen

  93. your relationship with God. There is

  94. only one way to develop a deeper

  95. relationship with God. There's only one

  96. primary tool that he gave us to deepen

  97. that relationship beyond his scripture

  98. and that is the power of prayer. Because

  99. it's through prayer that you truly see

  100. who you are. When you enter into the

  101. presence of a holy God, it reminds you

  102. of your neediness and his incredible

  103. power. It reminds you of how much he

  104. loves you and supports you. It's only in

  105. prayer that you can truly change

  106. yourself. Augustine had a great quote.

  107. He said, "What makes you who you are is

  108. not what you think or believe. It's what

  109. you love." It's not it's not what you

  110. think. It's not what you believe. It's

  111. what you love. So, you can say, "Well, I

  112. think about Jesus and I believe in

  113. Jesus." But if you truly love money or

  114. success or or comfort or if you're just

  115. seeking the world's approval all the

  116. time, then that's what's going to

  117. capture your imagination. And it's only

  118. in prayer that God can begin to reshape

  119. what you love. Because the more you talk

  120. to God and the more he answers, the more

  121. in love with him, you become. And that

  122. allows you to become the person that you

  123. were created to be. It's only in prayer

  124. that you can truly know God. Like you

  125. can know people. You can Facebook stalk

  126. them. You can get on their social media.

  127. You can figure out what they like, what

  128. they don't like. Like you can learn

  129. about people. You can know people. But

  130. to truly know someone means that you are

  131. in communication with that person. And

  132. so to truly know God, you have to be

  133. able to communicate with God. And it's

  134. only in prayer that you can face the

  135. troubles of life. The Bible is filled

  136. with people that are facing grief and

  137. fear and betrayal and and suffering and

  138. anguish and uncertainty. And and the

  139. ones that are successful in those

  140. battles are the ones that turn to God in

  141. prayer. I mean, think about this. Jesus,

  142. who suffered more than anyone has ever

  143. suffered, would regularly go to his

  144. father in prayer. We're talking about

  145. the son of God would take time out of

  146. his day to routinely go and talk to God

  147. to to pray to his father. Why would he

  148. do that? Well, he did that because

  149. that's where you access your power.

  150. That's where you access the strength of

  151. God. Tim Keller said, "Prayer is the key

  152. to everything a Christian should do or

  153. be." And I hope you see that that

  154. statement is not false. So, if that's

  155. true, then we have to ask ourselves the

  156. question, how do we pray? If prayer is

  157. so important, how do I actually pray? I

  158. want to make sure I get this thing

  159. right. And so, for the next several

  160. weeks, we'll be in a sermon series I'm

  161. calling, Lord, teach me to pray. So, two

  162. years ago, we had our our summer of

  163. worship where we talked about what

  164. worship really is. Last year, we talked

  165. about our summer of spirit. We talked

  166. about the Holy Spirit and how he impacts

  167. our lives. And this summer I want to

  168. talk about this idea of prayer. Lord,

  169. how do we pray? So God gave the

  170. disciples the Lord's prayer. And and

  171. Jesus taught them this model prayer to

  172. answer the question that they asked Jes

  173. Jesus, which is how do we pray? All

  174. right. And so we're going to look at

  175. that and we're going to break it down

  176. into all its little pieces over the

  177. summer. And hopefully by the end of the

  178. summer, you'll have a much deeper and

  179. richer prayer life than you walked in

  180. here with today. Uh what we have to

  181. remember first and foremost though is

  182. that the Lord's prayer is the Bible

  183. compressed into a prayer. So every

  184. phrase in the Lord's prayer contains a

  185. lot of theological insight. Like when

  186. when it says your kingdom come, that's

  187. talking about God's rule and reign. So

  188. you kind of need to know about that,

  189. right? It talks about forgive us our

  190. debts. Well, we got to understand the

  191. gospel. We have to understand

  192. forgiveness. What I want you to know is

  193. the Lord's prayer is not a shortcut

  194. around theology. It is theology that's

  195. compressed into a prayer. This is not

  196. some magic spell that you recite to help

  197. you win a battle in Fortnite. Okay? This

  198. is so much more than that. The more you

  199. understand understand about the

  200. theological truths that are contained in

  201. this prayer, the deeper your prayer life

  202. will be. So, the process for this

  203. series, and shout out to Redeemer

  204. Church, who gave us this uh teaching

  205. model, is that we're going to start with

  206. a phrase from the Lord's Prayer. And if

  207. you don't know that prayer, it's in

  208. Matthew chapter 6. You can go and you

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  209. can read it. Um, so we're going to start

  210. with a phrase from that prayer. And then

  211. we're going to expand on that phrase by

  212. going to a passage in scripture that

  213. would be required reading to actually

  214. understand what that piece of the prayer

  215. is all about. So, this week, we're going

  216. to start at the very beginning of the

  217. words prayer, which is the first two

  218. words are Our father.

  219. >> Our father. Our father. So why did Jesus

  220. tell us to start our prayers with our

  221. father? Well, we're going to learn more

  222. about that in Galatians 3 26. So if you

  223. could go over there with me. Galatians 3

  224. 26. If you got a Bible app or a Bible,

  225. it'll also be on the screen.

  226. Says, "But since that faith has come, we

  227. are no longer under a guardian. For

  228. through faith you are all sons of God in

  229. Christ Jesus. For those of you who were

  230. baptized into Christ have been clothed

  231. with Christ. There is no Jew or Greek,

  232. slave or free, male and female, since

  233. you are all one in Christ. And if you

  234. belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's

  235. seed, hes according to the promise. Now

  236. let's skip to chapter 4 and we'll start

  237. reading in verse three.

  238. In the same way, we also when we were

  239. children were in slavery under the

  240. elements of the world. When the time

  241. came to completion, God sent his son

  242. born of a woman under the law to redeem

  243. those under the law so that we might

  244. receive adoption as sons. And because

  245. you are sons, God sent spirit of his son

  246. into your hearts crying, "Aba, father."

  247. So you are no longer a slave but a son.

  248. And if a son then God has made you an

  249. heir. Everything in the Lord's prayer

  250. rests on verse 5 in Galatians which says

  251. through Jesus Christ we have been

  252. adopted into God's family. Before he

  253. teaches us about asking for our daily

  254. bread, before he teaches us about

  255. forgiveness, before he teaches us about

  256. how to overcome temptation, he teaches

  257. us who we are talking to, which is our

  258. father. The Lord's prayer does not begin

  259. with a request. It begins with defining

  260. the relationship. You know the DTR. If

  261. you've been on in a dating relationship,

  262. you know that's a that's an important

  263. step in any relationship is to determine

  264. the relationship. Like what are we? you

  265. know, well, you have to ask that

  266. question with God as well. What are we?

  267. What's our relationship?

  268. And you would say, he's your father. So

  269. before we focus on our our needs, Jesus

  270. wants us to focus on the one who

  271. actually hears our prayer requests. So

  272. God is not merely a creator. God is not

  273. merely a judge. God is not merely a

  274. king. God through Jesus Christ is our

  275. father. So get this. The power of your

  276. prayer is not the eloquent delivery of

  277. the prayer. It's the focus of who you're

  278. talking to. So if you know who you're

  279. talking to, it doesn't really matter as

  280. much what you say or how you say it. The

  281. most important thing to realize is that

  282. you are talking to your heavenly father.

  283. And and this invitation is extended to

  284. everyone. That's what the scripture was

  285. saying in verse 26 of chapter 3. says,

  286. "For through faith you are all sons of

  287. God in Christ Jesus." And then in

  288. chapter 4:5, he says he came to redeem

  289. those under the law so that we might

  290. receive adoption as sons.

  291. Jesus didn't just come to to die on the

  292. cross to forgive you of your sins. Like,

  293. yes, that's the highlight. You know,

  294. that's the most important part. We do

  295. celebrate that. That's amazing. But but

  296. that's not all he did. He didn't just

  297. come to forgive you of your sins. He

  298. went a step further. He died on the

  299. cross and rose again to bring you into

  300. God's eternal family. Like he didn't die

  301. just to rescue you from something. He

  302. died to bring you into something which

  303. is his family. And you might say, "Well,

  304. aren't we all God's children?"

  305. Well, yeah. In a sense, yes, you're

  306. right if you say that. I mean, God

  307. created every person in his image. And

  308. so technically we are God's children. Um

  309. the Apostle Paul talked about this in

  310. Acts chapter 17. When they asked him the

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  311. same question he was like yes we are all

  312. God's offspring because every human

  313. bears the image of God and they owe

  314. their existence to him. So in a sense

  315. yes but being created by God and being

  316. in a relationship with God are two

  317. completely different things. Like I have

  318. friends that know their biological

  319. fathers but have no relationship with

  320. their biological father because

  321. relationship requires so much more than

  322. just a shared DNA. Relationship requires

  323. love, commitment, and connection. So, so

  324. Paul's point here is that through Jesus

  325. Christ, we're invited to move into a

  326. relationship with God that goes far

  327. beyond just the fact that we were

  328. created by him. He can become your

  329. father in chapter 3 28

  330. says there's no Jew or Greek slave or

  331. free male or female since you are all

  332. one in Christ Jesus. See in the ancient

  333. world and in some places today people

  334. are divided by race and status and

  335. wealth and nationality

  336. and gender. In fact, the reason this

  337. statement is so profound in the way that

  338. Paul made it is the fact that in this

  339. ancient culture 2,000 years ago, only

  340. sons could be adopted as heirs. So, if

  341. you had an estate, you didn't have any

  342. children and you wanted to give your

  343. estate to someone, you could adopt a son

  344. and that person could then inherit your

  345. estate. But women were not allowed to be

  346. adopted as heirs to an estate. And so

  347. this invitation into God's family is

  348. extended to everyone including women. So

  349. they are seen in the same light as sons.

  350. That means they can receive the entire

  351. inheritance that was due a son. And it

  352. doesn't matter if you're a Jew or a

  353. Gentile, if you're a slave or free or

  354. male or female or rich or poor or

  355. educated or uneducated. If you're a

  356. Cowboys fan or a Redskins fan or a

  357. Commander fan or whatever they're called

  358. now, like the the the point is that

  359. whether you're young or old, you are

  360. given equal access to the estate of God.

  361. You become co-airs with Christ to all

  362. that God has. I'm going to wait there

  363. till someone says, "Amen."

  364. >> Thank you. This is incredible news.

  365. Maybe I'm not preaching it well enough,

  366. but wow, this is in insane. This boy

  367. from West Virginia who never thought he

  368. would get out of the mountains now has

  369. access to the kingdom of God. It just

  370. blows my mind when I think about it. So,

  371. every believer stands in equal footing

  372. before the father. There's no favorites,

  373. right? You know how even in your own

  374. family, if you have siblings, there's

  375. probably a favorite. I'm sorry, but

  376. there probably is. You know, some people

  377. are just treated different. Not in God's

  378. family. God loves everyone. There are no

  379. secondass citizens, no secondass

  380. children. There's no one with greater

  381. access to the father than someone else.

  382. Every child of God is welcomed and loved

  383. and received through the work that Jesus

  384. Christ did on that cross. But friends,

  385. we got to understand adoption is not

  386. automatic.

  387. It requires faith. It's a gift of God

  388. that was precured by Jesus when he died

  389. on the cross, paid for our sin, went to

  390. the grave, and rose from the dead. In

  391. those moments, that's when God gives us

  392. this free gift of grace and we have to

  393. actually receive it. And when we do

  394. through faith, when we do, we are

  395. secured in our future. That that's what

  396. adoption does. Adoption secures your

  397. future. Look at chapter 4:7.

  398. You are no longer a slave. You are a

  399. son. You're an heir. And if you're a

  400. son, then God made you that heir. So,

  401. it's kind of like when my son was

  402. applying for college, there was a lot of

  403. uncertainty. There were applications,

  404. there were deadlines, there were essays,

  405. there was FASA stuff and transcripts.

  406. And if you've gone through that process,

  407. you know how stressful it can be. And

  408. then you have to just kind of wait. You

  409. just got to wait for that letter to come

  410. in the mail. And you keep checking the

  411. mail. You keep checking the portals.

  412. keep checking everything. You're just

  413. waiting. You're like, "Please God, let

  414. this kid get into some school

  415. somewhere." That was my experience. Um,

  416. and you know, he would come down. He'd

  417. be like, "Have you heard anything yet?"

  418. I'm like, "No, you would hear before we

  419. would." So, um, but then then the day

  420. the first acceptance letter shows up and

  421. you know, it's like the most joyful

  422. experience. You open it at his family

  423. and you look at it and then like

  424. suddenly everything changes. Now, did

  425. did his senior year get easier after

  426. that?

  427. any seniors gone through that? Like, you

  428. know, your senior year doesn't get much

  429. easier. There's still tests. There's

  430. still deadlines. There's still teachers

  431. who apparently wake up every morning and

  432. say, "Hey, I got to give a a pop quiz

  433. today or whatever." And and the thing

  434. for me was after my son got accepted

  435. into college, he was like, "Why do I

  436. have to go to high school? Like, why do

  437. I have to finish the the the year?" And

  438. I I never really had to think about that

  439. before. And I mean, I know what he's

  440. saying, but he's like, "Hey, my future

  441. is secured, so why do I have to go to

  442. algebra today?" I was like, "Well, um, I

  443. gave him the best fatherly answer I

  444. could come up with." Because I told you

  445. to. It's all I could come up with. Yes.

  446. All the dads like that, right? Because I

  447. told you to. I don't I don't know. I

  448. think he might have been right, by the

  449. way. I don't know. Maybe he could have

  450. just stayed home. I'm not sure. But

  451. here's the point. The the difficult days

  452. did not disappear. the stress of all the

  453. other stuff did not disappear. Uh they

  454. just lost some of their power because he

  455. knew where he was headed. And that's

  456. what Paul is saying here. As Christians,

  457. you're an heir to God's kingdom. You

  458. belong to God. Your future is secure.

  459. And yes, there's still going to be

  460. struggles here on earth and there's

  461. still going to be disappointments, but

  462. we can face them differently because we

  463. know where we're headed. That's what the

  464. Apostle Paul was saying in Romans

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  465. chapter 8. He said, 'Our present

  466. sufferings are not even worth

  467. considering in light of what we have to

  468. look forward to before us. In light of

  469. the heaven that we have, in light of the

  470. fact that we are co-airs with Christ to

  471. God's kingdom, these earthly sufferings

  472. just don't hurt like they used to. See,

  473. the acceptance letter has already

  474. arrived for the Christian. God has

  475. already adopted you into his family.

  476. This doesn't start when you get to

  477. heaven. It starts the moment you accept

  478. this free gift of salvation. The

  479. inheritance is already yours. Your

  480. future is already secure. And so when

  481. you know when you where you're going, it

  482. kind of changes how you live dayto day.

  483. Adoption also gives us a heavenly

  484. father. I love chapter 4 6 says because

  485. you are sons God sent his holy spirit of

  486. his son into our hearts crying aba

  487. father. Did a lot of research on this

  488. word aba. Um it's a a deeply personal

  489. term. Uh it's not childish. It's not

  490. baby talk. I used to kind of think

  491. that's what it was, but that's not it.

  492. It's a it's actually a word that grows

  493. with you. It's something that a child

  494. would call their parent, but as they got

  495. older, they would still continue to call

  496. their parent that same thing. So maybe

  497. like mama or pop or something like that.

  498. It's a it's a word that that grows with

  499. you. It can be used as a child or an

  500. adult. And what it is, it's a reminder

  501. that no matter how old you become, you

  502. still have access to God as your father.

  503. So, like I don't know if you ever got a

  504. phone call from the the school like the

  505. assistant principal calls and says your

  506. kid got in trouble. Um I don't know what

  507. that's like. Maybe you do. So you can

  508. tell me after church if you want. But

  509. let's assume that maybe I got one or two

  510. of those calls um in my life. And and so

  511. what what doesn't happen when I get the

  512. call. The thing I don't do is I say,

  513. "Well, that's unfortunate. Um sounds

  514. like it's their problem, so I'm going to

  515. let them uh deal with that. Uh, we've

  516. been reviewing the situation and her

  517. mother and I have decided that she is no

  518. longer a member of our family. So, you

  519. can go ahead and just take care of her

  520. any way you see fit. Like, that's not

  521. what we do, is it? Is it? I'd hope not.

  522. No, it's it's probably what we think,

  523. but it's not what we actually say out

  524. loud. I hope.

  525. >> No. What we do is the bigger the

  526. problem, the more involved the parent

  527. becomes. But like you start leaving work

  528. a little bit earlier. You you make

  529. different phone calls. You you show up

  530. more often. Why? Because it's your kid.

  531. It's your child. And that's the picture

  532. that that Paul is giving us. God isn't

  533. merely our creator. He is our father.

  534. And fathers don't walk away during the

  535. difficult times. They actually get

  536. closer to you. Think about this. Saul

  537. before he became Paul was persecuting

  538. Christians. He was throwing them in

  539. prison. He was having them executed. Uh

  540. and then he met Jesus on the road to

  541. Damascus. He had a vision and God spoke

  542. directly to him. And what did God say?

  543. God said, "Saul, Saul, why are you

  544. persecuting them?"

  545. All right, you didn't catch me on that

  546. one, did you? Come on, Lynn. You've been

  547. in church for 74 years. You know better

  548. than this.

  549. Oh [laughter]

  550. yeah, I'm I'm in trouble now. [laughter]

  551. I got Burgess mad at me over here. I got

  552. L m anyway. No, like is that what he

  553. said? Saul. Saul, why are you

  554. persecuting

  555. >> me?

  556. >> Yes. Good job, Lyn. Why are you

  557. persecuting me? He's taking it it

  558. personally. He's taking it person. He's

  559. saying, "Why are you persecuting me?"

  560. And Saul's like, "I didn't do anything

  561. to you. I did stuff to them." And he's

  562. like, "No, no, they are my children and

  563. I take it personally. What you do to

  564. them impacts me. Why? Because I am a

  565. good father." So when you belong to God,

  566. you never have to face life alone

  567. because you have a good good father in

  568. heaven that is claiming you as his own.

  569. Adoption changes literally everything.

  570. You're no longer a slave but a son. No

  571. longer a slave, but a son. In a culture

  572. where your identity is largely built on

  573. performance, some people spend their

  574. entire lives trying to prove that they

  575. are in fact good enough. They they spend

  576. their entire lives trying to be

  577. successful or at least looking like they

  578. are successful. And either way, they're

  579. constantly saying like, "Am I enough?

  580. Have I done enough? What what do people

  581. think of me?" Friends, that is a

  582. miserable way to live.

  583. That is not the way that God called you

  584. to live. That is a miserable way to live

  585. because your identity is going to rise

  586. and fall on your success. And so, yeah,

  587. if you're crushing it, wow, great

  588. identity. It feels good. But there are

  589. going to be seasons where you're not.

  590. And then you just kind of like fall off

  591. that cliff emotionally. Why? Because

  592. you've been living for the world's

  593. approval. But Paul says something

  594. profound. He says, "Things have changed.

  595. You are no longer a slave. You are a

  596. son. You are a child of God. Galatians 3

  597. 27

  598. says, "For those of you who were

  599. baptized into Christ have been clothed

  600. with Christ."

  601. Look, baptism does not save you. It

  602. publicly identifies you with Jesus. It's

  603. your public profession of faith. You

  604. become clothed in Christ and his

  605. righteousness. His acceptance in heaven

  606. becomes your acceptance in heaven. Like

  607. like his standing before the father

  608. becomes your standing before the father.

  609. See a a slave is going to work for

  610. acceptance, but a son is going to work

  611. from acceptance. A a slave obeys because

  612. they have to, but a son obeys because

  613. they get to, because they belong. That's

  614. real freedom. No longer worrying about

  615. what the world thinks about you.

  616. worrying solely about what the father

  617. thinks about you. And the good news is

  618. that there's nothing you can do to lose

  619. his love. You don't have to earn it and

  620. you can't lose it. So just living in

  621. that that freedom. This is not so you

  622. can do whatever you want and just go sin

  623. and know that you're forgiven. No, this

  624. is to to teach you that your reality has

  625. changed. You you are a family member of

  626. God and since he loves you perfectly,

  627. you want to then love him. We love

  628. because he first loved us. And you say,

  629. "Well, how is this possible? How can

  630. guilty sinners become sons and daughters

  631. of of God? How can people who deserve

  632. judgment in hell, how can they receive

  633. adoption?"

  634. Well, the truth is in Matthew 27:46 that

    Matthew 27:46

  635. there was a great cost for our ability

  636. to be adopted. Matthew 27:46

    Matthew 27:46

  637. says about 3:00 in the afternoon, Jesus,

  638. who's on the cross at this point, cried

  639. out with a loud voice and said, "My God,

  640. my God, why have you forsaken or

  641. abandoned me?" Throughout his entire

  642. life, Jesus has called God father. Again

  643. and again he calls him father or he

  644. calls him aba but but on the cross

  645. things have changed. For the first time

  646. in the Bible Jesus cries out my god my

  647. god. Not my father my father but my god

  648. my god. Why? Because in this moment

  649. Jesus was bearing the judgment that our

  650. sins deserved. The son was abandoned so

  651. that we could be adopted. Jesus lost the

  652. relationship that we deserved so that we

  653. could receive the relationship that we

  654. do not deserve. He was cast out so that

  655. we could be brought in.

  656. Jesus paid the price for our adoption.

  657. See, we we don't obey God because we're

  658. scared of him. We don't obey God because

  659. we feel like we have to. We obey God

  660. because of his incredible love, because

  661. of what he sacrificed in order to adopt

  662. us.

  663. A slave obeys out of fear, but a son or

  664. a daughter obeys out of love. Not

  665. because we have to, but because we want

  666. to. And that raises one final question.

  667. If God is truly our father, and I think

  668. we've proven that he is, what does that

  669. mean when we pray? What does that mean

  670. when we pray? Well, it means that we

  671. need to learn to pray like a child.

  672. Chapter 4: And because you are sons or

  673. daughters, God sent the spirit of his

  674. son into our hearts crying, "Aba,

  675. Father." So, the the the role, one of

  676. the roles of the Holy Spirit in your

  677. life is to draw you into prayer, not to

  678. some distant entity that lives out in

  679. space somewhere. not to some unknowable

  680. being, but to draw you into a

  681. relationship with your father, God. Have

  682. you ever noticed when something big

  683. happens in your life, you typically,

  684. most people have that person that they

  685. talk to first? Like you got your person,

  686. that person that's like number one on

  687. your favorites list in your phone. That

  688. person that you have to call

  689. immediately, whether it's good news or

  690. or bad news. So, good news, you call

  691. them, right? Bad news, you call them.

  692. scared, you call them. Excited, you call

  693. them. You need advice, you call them.

  694. You don't stop and think, should I call

  695. them? You just call them because they're

  696. your person and you know they want to

  697. hear about it. I have several people

  698. like that in my life. And guess what?

  699. Lynn's actually one of them. But now I'm

  700. probably needing a replacement. So, uh,

  701. if anybody else would like to receive

  702. calls from me at 8:00 at night talking

  703. about silly things. Um, but no, you just

  704. you have that person because you know

  705. that they love you. It's not an

  706. obligation for them to pick up the phone

  707. and listen to your story. You know, they

  708. want to hear your story whether it's

  709. good or bad.

  710. So, my son doesn't call me unless he

  711. needs money. All right? So, he's 20

  712. years old, but he calls his mom all the

  713. time because that's his person. That's

  714. who he needs to talk to. Good times, bad

  715. times, stressed out, whatever, he calls

  716. her because she is his rock. She is his

  717. his person. And that's what Jesus is

  718. trying to teach us here when he says

  719. when you pray say our father. So so

  720. don't say big man upstairs. Don't say oh

  721. holiest of holies. Don't say lord of

  722. lord and king of kings. Like can you put

  723. that in your prayer? Absolutely. Yeah.

  724. God says honor him. Be in all of him.

  725. You know put that somewhere in your

  726. prayer. But don't lead with that. lead

  727. with who he actually is, which is our

  728. father.

  729. Our father. See, you're going to know

  730. that your your prayer life reaches the

  731. next level when you stop focusing on the

  732. the words that you're trying to say and

  733. you start focusing on who you're

  734. actually talking to. When you start to

  735. really see a perfect father in heaven

  736. just doting over you, you will be

  737. excited to talk to him about anything.

  738. You're going to know that you've taken

  739. that next step in your prayer life when

  740. God becomes that that first phone call

  741. that you make. Before you go to social

  742. media and complain or whatever, before

  743. you you get on the group text and

  744. complain, before you go to chat GPT to

  745. talk it out, like when you start going

  746. to God first, when he becomes your

  747. person, your father, that's when you

  748. know that your prayer life has taken a a

  749. great leap.

  750. So when you're hurting, who do you call?

  751. Call your father. When you're confused,

  752. you call your father. When you're

  753. grateful, you call your father. When

  754. you've sinned, hear me on that. When

  755. you've sinned,

  756. don't go like Adam and Eve and go hide

  757. in the wilderness and think God can't

  758. find you or that he's mad at you. When

  759. you've sinned, you call your father. And

  760. when you're afraid, you call your

  761. father. Jesus paid an incredible price

  762. [snorts] so that we would have access to

  763. our father. So we would never have to

  764. experience fear alone again. So don't

  765. settle for merely knowing facts about

  766. God. Don't settle for merely reciting

  767. scripted prayers like this model prayer.

  768. Call your heavenly father. Talk to him

  769. and trust him.

  770. because prayer is learning to live as a

  771. child that already belongs to a father.

  772. So, Father, we are grateful that we can

  773. pray this morning and communicate with

  774. you. And I know there's some people that

  775. are having the time of their lives

  776. today. There are people that are just

  777. struggling with all kinds of stuff.

  778. There are are people that are worried

  779. over their loved ones because of illness

  780. and financial struggle. And God, there's

  781. just a plethora of emotions that are

  782. gathered in this room. And then the

  783. people watching online, Lord, I know

  784. there's so many of them that are

  785. struggling as well. And so, God, it's

  786. just my prayer today that they would

  787. begin to see you as a father. And I know

  788. that can be hard for some people who may

  789. not have had a great relationship with

  790. their earthly father. But Lord, you you

  791. tell us to look past that and to see God

  792. as [snorts] who he truly is, which is a

  793. a perfect father.

  794. We have the entire Bible to look at and

  795. story after story, true story after true

  796. story. We see the father God showing up

  797. to take care of his people in all kinds

  798. of situations. And so looking at your

  799. resume, we know that you're not you're

  800. not a distant father. You're a good

  801. father, father that cares about his

  802. children. And so today, Lord, I just

  803. pray that you would be with those

  804. who are are struggling. And I pray that

  805. right now they would just take a moment

  806. to to just cry out to you and say my

  807. father, father god.

  808. And just let him know the requests of

  809. your heart. You don't have to do it out

  810. loud. You can do it in your heart.

  811. Just talk to him now in this moment.

  812. Take advantage of this opportunity.

  813. That thing you've been hiding from

  814. everyone else, the thing you've locked

  815. away in a closet somewhere and tried to

  816. ignore. Why don't you open the door

  817. right now and just talk to him about

  818. that?

  819. Maybe it's that hurt you received as a

  820. child, from a loved one, maybe even a

  821. parent.

  822. Maybe it's a rejection you've received

  823. from someone you love, someone you're in

  824. a relationship with.

  825. Maybe it's some type of of a loss that

  826. you just weren't prepared for that's

  827. just rocked your world.

  828. Talk to God about it.

  829. Say, "Our father, my father,

  830. I know you're listening.

  831. I know you love me.

  832. So just tell me.
