  1. celebration like no other. In Jesus name

  2. I prayed. Amen.

  3. All right. So, we're about halfway

  4. through Well, we are actually halfway

  5. through our series, Lord, Teach Me to

  6. Pray.

  7. And so, if you've been with us every

  8. week, hopefully you've picked up on the

  9. fact that the Lord's Prayer is not just

  10. something that you memorize and you say

  11. before a ball game. It is so much deeper

  12. than that. It's actually a road map to

  13. the Christian life. Every phrase teaches

  14. us something about who God is and who he

  15. created us to be and how we can have a

  16. relationship with him. We've learned to

  17. pray things like Our Father because we

  18. understand that that all of our our

  19. prayer starts because we actually have a

  20. relationship with the creator God. We've

  21. learned to pray hallowed be thy name

  22. because God deserves our worship before

  23. he receives our requests. We've learned

  24. to pray thy kingdom come because we know

  25. the kingdom of God is so much better

  26. than the kingdom of the world or these

  27. kingdoms that we try to build for

  28. ourselves. And last week we learned to

  29. pray a pretty difficult part of the

  30. prayer, which is thy will be done

  31. because we discovered that even when we

  32. don't know God's plan, we do know God's

  33. heart. And so, we can trust him and to

  34. doing the right things for us. And so,

  35. now Jesus turns turns his attention from

  36. God's glory to one of our greatest

  37. needs, which is forgiveness. And this is

  38. the part of the prayer that should hit

  39. close to home with everybody

  40. in here today because every one of us

  41. knows what it's like to sin. We know

  42. what it's like to fail and we know what

  43. it's like to break stuff that God has

  44. given us.

  45. We we've carried guilt. We've carried

  46. shame. And so, we know what it's like to

  47. need another chance, to need need a

  48. mulligan, to need a a do-over. And so,

  49. Jesus teaches us in the prayer how to

  50. receive just that when he teaches us to

  51. pray, forgive us of our trespasses.

  52. Now, all of that begins with honesty.

  53. We'll be in Psalm 51 today. Psalm 51 is

  54. a song that was composed by King David

  55. right after a very specific incident in

  56. his life.

  57. He was attracted to another man's wife.

  58. Her name was Bathsheba. And he had an

  59. affair with her, and she became

  60. pregnant. And so, to cover up the the

  61. scandal, he had her husband killed by

  62. putting him on the front lines of the

  63. battle, and then commanding the other

  64. soldiers to pull back away from him. So,

  65. the prophet Nathan goes to King David,

  66. and he tells him a story. He says there

  67. was this rich king who had lots and lots

  68. of sheep. And then there was this poor

  69. man who had one little lamb.

  70. And one day, the rich man was hungry,

  71. and he decided instead of slaughtering

  72. any number of his thousands of sheep

  73. that he had, he would take the one poor

  74. man's lamb and slaughter it for his

  75. meal. Then Nathan looks at King David

  76. and says, "What should be done to this

  77. man?" And King David becomes indignant,

  78. and he says, "This man should die."

  79. And in one of the most poignant

  80. statements in the history of the world,

  81. Nathan looks at King David and says,

  82. "Well, thou art that man."

  83. So, King David's scandal was exposed.

  84. The truth was out. His life came

  85. crashing down in that moment, and he

  86. composed one of the most famous prayers

  87. that's confession that's ever been

  88. written in Psalm chapter 51. So, let's

    Psalms 51 chapter mention

  89. read a little bit of that.

  90. Starting in verse one.

  91. He says, "Be gracious to me, God,

  92. according to your faithful love.

  93. According to your abundant compassion,

  94. blot out my rebellion. Completely wash

  95. away my guilt and cleanse me from my

  96. sin.

  97. For I'm conscious of my rebellion, and

  98. my sin is always before me. Against you

  99. and you alone, I have sinned and done

  100. this evil in your sight. So, you are

  101. right when you pass sentence. You are

  102. blameless when you judge. Indeed, I was

  103. guilty when I was born. I was sinful

  104. when my mother conceived me.

  105. Now, here's the good news for us today.

  106. There is a process by which, no matter

  107. how bad you have wrecked your life, you

  108. can receive forgiveness and God can help

  109. you with restoration.

  110. Isn't that awesome?

  111. You you you get a heavenly do-over, no

  112. matter what you've done. But, repentance

  113. is not just telling God that you're

  114. sorry. It it's so much more than that.

  115. It it's a change that emerges from

  116. within your heart and changes your

  117. outward expressions.

  118. But, the problem is that this real, true

  119. repentance can be hard to access for a

  120. lot of people, because truth is, we make

  121. really good lawyers uh when we're

  122. dealing with ourselves. We we we're

  123. really good at being our own defense

  124. attorneys. Uh so, last week, I I took

  125. the church vans over to the gas station

  126. to get them gassed up after the mission

  127. trip, and um you know, the church vans

  128. with like the church logo on the side

  129. and the address on the side and the

  130. phone number on the side. Like, no

  131. pressure when you're driving those

  132. things, right? So, thanks a lot, Mike

  133. Adlet, for that. I'd rather go incognito

  134. rather than have the whole world know

  135. who I am, because you never know, right?

  136. So,

  137. me being the idiot I am, I went to the

  138. gas station, but I went in through the

  139. exit.

  140. Yep. So, in my defense, see, I'm already

  141. doing it. In my defense,

  142. uh I I started building my case. So, the

  143. >> [snorts]

  144. >> the signs are like this high off the

  145. road,

  146. kind of hard to see, right? Uh there was

  147. no clear entrance on Country Club Road

  148. to this particular uh gas station.

  149. Anybody could have done what I did, and

  150. the good news was, nobody was coming out

  151. as I was going in. So, I completely

  152. justified myself. I felt great, filled

  153. up the van, and then on my way out

  154. through the correct exit, by the way,

  155. this guy had the nerve

  156. to come in through the exit.

  157. And I wish I could tell you different,

  158. but I was furious.

  159. >> [laughter]

  160. >> I was so mad. I'm like, "What's this guy

  161. doing? Can't he read the signs?"

  162. And I'm telling you the Holy Spirit got

  163. a hold of me and gently reminded me that

  164. I had done the exact same thing like

  165. literally 10 minutes before. Now,

  166. I'm going to guess that I'm not alone in

  167. doing stuff like that this time, right?

  168. Okay. All right. I see some heads

  169. nodding. Thank you for the support.

  170. Um

  171. but it is amazing that when we do

  172. something wrong, we always have our

  173. reasons, right? When we do something

  174. wrong, we always have our reasons, but

  175. when somebody else does something wrong,

  176. they have their problems.

  177. That's the human nature. That's the

  178. flesh that won't go away until we get

  179. our new bodies in heaven. This is the

  180. battle that we all face every day,

  181. Christian, non-Christian. That's just

  182. human nature. We instinctively defend

  183. ourselves when we know that we have done

  184. wrong because we don't want to admit

  185. that we were wrong. And that's exactly

  186. why repentance is so difficult. It's not

  187. just saying I'm sorry to God. It's so

  188. much more than that because before God

  189. can change you, we have to stop being

  190. our own defense attorneys. But before

  191. God can change us, before we can really

  192. truly experience repentance, we have to

  193. stop justifying our words and our

  194. actions. So, in my house, we have a

  195. phrase and it's called own your mess.

  196. So, Buzzards, we own our mess. We know

  197. we're going to break stuff. We know

  198. we're going to do things wrong. We know

  199. we're going to We know that we're going

  200. to mess up. And so what I try to teach

  201. my kids and myself is that when those

  202. events happen, we need to own the mess

  203. that we made. Don't justify it. Don't

  204. deny it. Just say, "Hey, look, I screwed

  205. up. I messed up. I did this. This is my

  206. part in the problem."

  207. See, David says

  208. that he can see from the beginning of

  209. his life what he was like.

  210. So, repentance happened for King David

  211. when he admitted his contribution to

  212. this mess that had been made. And he's

  213. saying, "Look, I know I've been this way

  214. since birth, prone to wander. Yeah, I

  215. feel it. Prone to leave the one I love."

  216. Tim Keller says repentance begins when

  217. we stop denying what we're capable of.

  218. And what that means is there's not a

  219. whole lot of difference between the kid

  220. with the cookie crumbs all over his face

  221. that denies eating the cookie and the

  222. adult that cheats on their taxes. Like,

  223. yes, it's uh different actions, but the

  224. instincts come from the same species. We

  225. are all broken at a heart level, and we

  226. need to admit that we have a problem.

  227. But, how do you expose the real problem?

  228. Well, I think that's given to us in

  229. verse 4.

  230. David says,

  231. "Against you and you alone, I have

  232. sinned

  233. and done this evil in your sight."

  234. David says something that seems almost

  235. impossible to understand. He says,

  236. "Against you, God, and you alone, I have

  237. sinned."

  238. Well, time out, cuz I bet Bathsheba

  239. would disagree with that statement. I

  240. bet her dead husband, Uriah, would

  241. disagree with that statement. I bet

  242. David's family would disagree with that

  243. statement. I bet the nation of Israel

  244. would disagree with what uh King David

  245. just said.

  246. So, we have to understand he's not

  247. saying that he did not hurt other

  248. people.

  249. He's not denying the impact that he had

  250. on their lives.

  251. What he is saying though is very

  252. profound. He is saying that every sin

  253. that people commit

  254. begins as a sin against God.

  255. So so every outward sin has an inward

  256. idol. Every sinful action begins with a

  257. sinful affection. We don't just break

  258. God's rules, we replace God with

  259. something else. So when we sin, we're

  260. replacing God often times with things

  261. like human approval. We care way more

  262. about what they say than what he says.

  263. Sometimes we replace God with this idea

  264. of comfort. Sometimes it's like in King

  265. David's situation, it's chasing after

  266. pleasure. We'd rather have pleasure than

  267. Jesus. Sometimes it's success. We'll

  268. push aside all the things that God wants

  269. us to do in order to achieve all of our

  270. own goals and sometimes it's just basic

  271. control. We need to control everything

  272. and so we tell God to take his hands off

  273. the wheel. And in those moments, we've

  274. all decided basically the same thing

  275. that there is something in life that is

  276. more valuable than our relationship

  277. with God with God. And so that's why

  278. every sin is ultimately a worship

  279. problem.

  280. So when you understand that sin begins

  281. with a worship problem, then you can

  282. kind of start working on it at that

  283. point. So last year my yard looked

  284. terrible. I mean just absolutely

  285. terrible. If there was something awful

  286. that could be in your yard, it was in my

  287. yard. Every weed known to man, moles,

  288. grubs, all of it. My yard looked like

  289. it was it was a tragedy actually. And so

  290. uh I I decided as a man that I was going

  291. to take control of this situation. So I

  292. set some money aside and I was like, you

  293. know what? I've got this. And I went to

  294. Lowe's and I got some weed killer and I

  295. got some grub killer and I got some

  296. um

  297. started watching some videos of people

  298. that have PhDs and like lawn care

  299. maintenance and stuff. And it was great.

  300. Like I stayed with it for a while. But

  301. then the worst thing happened and that

  302. was the fact that my yard actually

  303. started to look pretty good.

  304. It did on the It looked great on the

  305. surface and you know what I did? I got

  306. lazy and I stopped working on it as

  307. hard. And then we had this instance

  308. which I'm calling emergence emergence

  309. day which happened in September and that

  310. was the day that literally 200 million

  311. grubs came up out of my lawn and went

  312. into my garage. How they got in my

  313. garage I will never know but it looked

  314. like it snowed in my garage when I

  315. opened the door and these suckers

  316. started molting into the concrete inside

  317. of my garage and it smelled like a

  318. dumpster in there. I had to power wash

  319. my garage to get these things out of the

  320. garage. See and at that point I was

  321. like, "Okay, yeah, I'm still a man but

  322. I'm not that kind of a guy I guess so

  323. I'm going to just have to admit here I

  324. don't have the time or talent to deal

  325. with this situation and so I called

  326. TruGreen and they came over and they

  327. started spraying my weeds and spraying

  328. the grubs and you know what they did

  329. differently than me?

  330. They stayed at it. The lawn started

  331. looking good. They didn't call me up and

  332. be like, "Hey, we're done. It looks

  333. good."

  334. No, they're like, "We're going to come

  335. spray it even though it's green."

  336. I'm like, "What are they doing?" And

  337. then I started looking at the chemicals

  338. and the things that they put on my lawn

  339. and I realized that they were treating

  340. things underneath the surface that I

  341. couldn't see. They understood something

  342. about the lawns that I didn't and that's

  343. that you don't just deal with what's

  344. visible, you deal with the thing that's

  345. happening inside underneath. Otherwise,

  346. the problem is going to come back.

  347. And so

  348. I feel like that's kind of how some of

  349. us treat sin.

  350. We're We're like, "Well, you know what?

  351. I'm just going to stop yelling at my

  352. wife. I'm going to stop gossiping about

  353. my neighbors. I'm I'm I'm going to stop

  354. looking at that website." And And that's

  355. great. There's There's actions are good

  356. things that we should stop doing. Those

  357. are good goals to have, but they're only

  358. dealing with the surface level problem.

  359. That's the expression. That's the

  360. behavior of the sin. The sin is

  361. something that happens deep down. And so

  362. that's what Jesus is getting at with

  363. this part of the Lord's Prayer when he

  364. talks about this thing called

  365. repentance. And when you're asking God

  366. to truly forgive you, it you're asking a

  367. much deeper question than what should I

  368. stop doing? You're asking the question

  369. of well, why do I keep going back there?

  370. Well, what's going on underneath the

  371. surface in my heart that's causing me to

  372. to make these decisions and say these

  373. things. What What is it that I'm loving

  374. more than God in these moments of

  375. weakness?

  376. Because it's until God changes the root,

  377. then the negative fruit is going to keep

  378. coming back into your life.

  379. So what we have to do in order to truly

  380. repent and be forgiven is to let God

  381. identify the root cause of the behavior.

  382. Once you know what that thing is, maybe

  383. it's insecurity, maybe it's a trauma

  384. that you haven't dealt with. It could be

  385. a lot of things, but when you deal with

  386. that heart level issue, it changes how

  387. you express yourself to the world around

  388. you. But I feel like a lot of people

  389. don't get to this point because they're

  390. scared of this act of repentance.

  391. They just don't understand the joy and

  392. the peace that comes from actually being

  393. forgiven.

  394. See, there's this type of repentance

  395. that really doesn't change anyone for

  396. the better. It's kind of emotional

  397. repentance. It's like this thing where

  398. you get caught doing something you

  399. shouldn't do and you feel ashamed and

  400. you're disappointed in yourself and so

  401. you go and through tears you ask for

  402. forgiveness and all that's great, but

  403. a lot of times those people walk away

  404. from those situations and they still

  405. feel the the guilt.

  406. They still feel the the shame of their

  407. actions.

  408. And and friends, the devil loves that.

  409. He absolutely loves the fact that you

  410. still feel that way. He wants you to

  411. feel guilty. He wants you to feel

  412. ashamed. And so, what do you do? You

  413. begin to believe, "Well, I'm a failure.

  414. I'm a mistake. My I'll never change. God

  415. must be tired of hearing from me because

  416. I've done this 50 times, and I've had to

  417. pray forgiveness every single time." And

  418. so, we start identifying ourselves

  419. as failures, as guilty people, as

  420. shameful people.

  421. That's not the repentance that David is

  422. praying in Psalm 51.

  423. Friends, when Jesus teaches us to pray,

  424. "Father, forgive us of our trespasses,"

  425. he is not inviting you into a state of

  426. constant guilt and shame. He is inviting

  427. you into a life of constant grace.

  428. Listen to David's prayer beginning in

  429. verse 6 now.

  430. Surely you desire integrity in the inner

  431. self. And you teach me wisdom deep

  432. within. Purify me with hyssop, and I

  433. will be clean. Wash me, and I will be

  434. whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and

  435. gladness. Let the bones you have crushed

  436. rejoice. Turn your face away from my

  437. sin. Blot out all of my guilt. God,

  438. create a clean heart for me, and renew a

  439. steadfast spirit within me. Do not

  440. banish me from your presence, or take

  441. your Holy Spirit from me. Restore the

  442. joy of your salvation to me, and sustain

  443. me by giving me a willing spirit.

  444. Not once does he pray, "God, make me

  445. feel worse. God, make me feel guilty.

  446. God, make me feel ashamed. God, help me

  447. to to pay my penance."

  448. No, he says, "Wash me.

  449. Create in me a clean heart. Renew a

  450. steadfast spirit within me. Restore the

  451. joy of your salvation."

  452. He's asking for so much more.

  453. David knows that repentance isn't just

  454. looking back at your sin and dealing

  455. with the consequences of that. It's

  456. about looking forward to God's grace.

  457. Because that future grace is what's

  458. ultimately going to give you the courage

  459. to be honest with God. To be authentic

  460. before your father. Look, if God was a

  461. judge, we should all be hiding under the

  462. pews right now. If he was just a judge,

  463. we should be hiding like Adam and Eve in

  464. the garden. Because we've all sinned and

  465. fallen short of the glory of God. We

  466. should be scared. We should be on our

  467. knees. But that's not the posture that

  468. we take because we also know, according

  469. to the prayer that Jesus is teaching us,

  470. that God is a loving father who is full

  471. of grace. And because he's a loving

  472. father, we can step out into the light

  473. as broken as we are

  474. and receive that steadfast love and

  475. forgiveness. Because God's love is

  476. greater than your deepest failure.

  477. Now, friends, I have no idea why this

  478. came to mind this week, but when I was

  479. like 7 or 8 years old, um I got one of

  480. these cool little dart guns for

  481. Christmas. They're the ones where you

  482. kind of pull back the the lever and then

  483. you pull pull the trigger and shoot the

  484. rubber dart with the suction cup on the

  485. tip. You know, I thought it was cool.

  486. So, I got it for Christmas and my mom

  487. had those little fake candles in the in

  488. the windows, the ones with the colored

  489. bulbs on top. They're made out of

  490. plastic. And for some reason, I'm

  491. standing in the living room. I'm like

  492. I'm like I'm going to take a shot at one

  493. of the candles. Cuz odds are you're not

  494. hitting the candle, right? All the way

  495. across the living room, I shoot the dart

  496. and by some miracle, I guess Dude

  497. Perfect would have like recruited me if

  498. they saw this video. Like I shot the

  499. dart. The dart didn't hit the candle. It

  500. hit the little bulb on top of the candle

  501. and then stuck to the window. It was the

  502. greatest shot of my life.

  503. But at the same time, I'm like, oh no,

  504. I'm dead.

  505. >> [laughter]

  506. >> I I I know how much those things cost. I

  507. million dollars for all I knew. I

  508. thought my mom was absolutely going to

  509. murder me. And

  510. as if God has a sick sense of humor or

  511. whatever, like the dart is literally

  512. hanging from the window like as a

  513. confession of my guilt right there on

  514. the window. So I'm like, you know what?

  515. I'm just going to go and admit to mom

  516. what I did. And again, I thought she was

  517. going to be extremely upset. And she

  518. wasn't happy, but I wasn't met with the

  519. explosion of anger that I thought I

  520. would be met with. And it was actually

  521. kind of funny cuz looking back on it, I

  522. think my dad was a little bit proud.

  523. He's like, "That's my boy."

  524. >> [laughter]

  525. >> I taught him to shoot that .22 back in

  526. the day. Like so anyway,

  527. um

  528. there was consequences of course. I lost

  529. my allowance

  530. and I had to pay for a new thing of

  531. bulbs or whatever, but ultimately there

  532. was grace and there was forgiveness.

  533. Why? Because my mom loved me more than

  534. she loved that stupid candle.

  535. Now I know it's a dumb illustration, but

  536. it's also very true to what God does for

  537. us. That's what grace ultimately is. God

  538. doesn't pretend our sin isn't serious.

  539. He nailed his son to a cross in order to

  540. pay for sin. Sin is ugly. Sin is gross.

  541. Sin is serious, but here's the thing.

  542. God loves us more than he hates the

  543. thing that we broke.

  544. He loves us more

  545. than he hates what we've broken.

  546. And that's why repentance is not the end

  547. of joy.

  548. Repentance is the pathway back to it.

  549. And friends, if you ever truly repent

  550. and if you've ever experienced the

  551. forgiveness of God, it changes your life

  552. and we see that in the Psalm as well.

  553. Look at verse 13.

  554. So after David has experienced

  555. forgiveness,

  556. real true repentance and forgiveness. He

  557. says in verse 13, "I will teach the

  558. rebellious your ways, and sinners will

  559. return to you. Save me from the guilt of

  560. bloodshed, God, God of my salvation. And

  561. get this, my tongue will sing of your

  562. righteousness. Lord, open my lips and my

  563. mouth will declare your praise."

  564. Notice what happens after David

  565. experiences God's true forgiveness. He

  566. doesn't say, "Woo, glad that's over. Now

  567. I can finally move on with my life."

  568. It's not what he says. He says, "I'm

  569. going to go out and I'm going to re-

  570. teach the rebellious your ways. Now that

  571. I know what forgiveness really feels

  572. like, I'm going to go out and I'm going

  573. to tell the people that have not

  574. experienced that all about you. My My

  575. tongue is going to sing of your

  576. righteousness. I'm going to write a

  577. bunch of Psalms and we're going to put

  578. them in a Bible and people are going to

  579. sing them during worship services in

  580. Camden County in 2026. Like he says, 'My

  581. mouth will declare your praise.'

  582. I'm not going to shrink from what I've

  583. done. I'm going to make amends and I'm

  584. also going to declare the praise of God

  585. because now I've felt what it's like to

  586. have my guilt truly removed. See, when

  587. you experience repentance, it restores

  588. joy. It produces worship and ultimately

  589. it creates witnesses.

  590. I'm telling you the greatest witnesses

  591. for the gospel are people that have

  592. walked down some really, really rough

  593. roads in their life.

  594. You talk to the people that know what

  595. it's like to be forgiven of some deep,

  596. serious sin, and those people are

  597. typically the ones that will can talk

  598. about Jesus in a way that most of us

  599. can't. They're the ones winning people

  600. to the Lord. So, don't think that God

  601. can't use your journey to change the

  602. world. That can actually be the fuel for

  603. the fire. See, forgiven people can't

  604. help but tell people where they found

  605. their forgiveness.

  606. So, what do we do? We look to the We

  607. look to the cross.

  608. We look to the cross and we look to

  609. what Jesus did for us. The The

  610. forgiveness that we receive from that

  611. cross where he died for our sin, but he

  612. did not stay dead. He He rose from the

  613. dead so that we could rise to a new

  614. life. So, don't settle for carrying that

  615. guilt that Jesus already carried to the

  616. cross for you.

  617. You don't have to carry that anymore.

  618. You don't have to carry the guilt or the

  619. shame cuz Jesus already nailed that to

  620. Calvary's cross. So, today bring God the

  621. broken pieces of your life. Admit your

  622. part in creating the mess. Help God or

  623. ask God to help you identify the the

  624. idol that created the problem in the

  625. first place. And then ask him to remove

  626. that temptation. And then find a joy in

  627. knowing that your Father God loves you

  628. more than your mistakes. He is full of

  629. grace. Receive his forgiveness. Lose the

  630. guilt. Lose the shame. Experience the

  631. the joy of God's love.

  632. And then get to work in the power of the

  633. Holy Spirit trying to restore the things

  634. that were broken because of the

  635. decisions that you have made.

  636. And then ultimately tell others about

  637. the grace that you have found in Jesus.

  638. That's the power and that's the beauty

  639. of praying,

  640. "Father, forgive me my trespasses."

  641. Let's pray.
