-
morning our Old Testament reading this
-
morning is Genesis 4 verses 1-
-
16 now Adam knew Eve his wife and she
-
conceived and bore Cain saying I have
-
gotten a man with the help of the Lord
-
and again she bore his brother Abel now
-
Abel was a keeper of sheep and Cain a
-
worker of the ground in the course of
-
time Cain brought brought to the Lord an
-
offering of the fruit of the ground and
-
Abel also brought of the firstborn of
-
his flock and of their fat portions and
-
the Lord had regard for Abel and his
-
offering but for Cain and his offering
-
he had no regard so Cain was very angry
-
and his face fell the Lord said to Cain
-
why are you angry and why has your face
-
Fallen if you do well will you not be
-
accepted accepted and if you do not do
-
well sin is crouching at the door its
-
desire is contrary to you but you must
-
rule over it Cain spoke to Abel his
-
brother and when they were in the field
-
Cain rose up against his brother Abel
-
and killed him then the Lord said to
-
Cain where is Abel your brother he said
-
I do not know am I My Brother's Keeper
-
and the Lord said what have you done the
-
voice of your brother's blood is crying
-
to me from the ground and now you are
-
cursed from the ground which has opened
-
its mouth to receive your brother's
-
blood from your hand when you work the
-
ground it shall no longer yield to you
-
its strength you shall be a fugitive and
-
a Wanderer on the earth Cain said to the
-
Lord my punishment is greater than I can
-
bear behold you have driven me today
-
away from the ground and from your face
-
I shall be hidden I shall be a fugitive
-
and a Wanderer on the earth and whoever
-
Finds Me will kill me then the Lord said
-
to him not so if anyone kills Cain
-
Vengeance shall be taken on him
-
Sevenfold and the Lord put a mark on
-
Cain lest any who found him should
-
attack him then Cain went away from the
-
present of the Lord and settled in the
-
Land of Nod East of
-
Eden our new testament reading from
-
Hebrews
-
11 veres
-
1-4 now Faith is the Assurance of things
-
hoped for the conviction of Things Not
-
Seen for by it the people of old
-
received their
-
Commendation by faith we understand that
-
the Universe was created by the word of
-
God so that what is seen was not made
-
out of things that are
-
visible by faith Abel offered to God a
-
more acceptable sacrifice than Cain
-
through which he was commanded as
-
righteous God commending him by
-
accepting his gifts and through his
-
faith though he died he still speaks
-
this is the word of the Lord thanks be
-
to
-
God I got one bad habit well I got more
-
than one
-
but I got one really bad habit I love
-
watching True Crime anybody else here
-
like watching True
-
Crime come on don't make me the own oh
-
thank you oh I got two Sinners with me
-
three
-
good and that means on Friday night what
-
gets turned on is dat line do you guys
-
know what date line is dat line follows
-
a situation where somebody usually gets
-
killed sometimes it's something else and
-
you learn pretty quickly that's
-
formulaic they always have the
-
spouse and then they create this other
-
person maybe the gardener who she had an
-
argument with it's always a spouse but
-
they try and create like this could be
-
these two things and then the whole
-
formula is how do they catch him and
-
then what does they do once they catch
-
them okay so that's basically the story
-
the plot of this show and I've learned a
-
couple things number one if you're
-
planning to kill someone don't buy life
-
insurance a month
-
before because apparently that's a big
-
sign of your
-
guilt right the other thing don't look
-
on your computer how do I ask
-
somebody yes I just saw an episode of
-
that the interesting thing though about
-
this
-
show is I always
-
ends with the guy or the girl who gets
-
caught almost 90% of the time blaming
-
the system blaming their upbringing
-
blaming something else going
-
on well today we're going to meet a guy
-
who could have been on a date line
-
episode and what does he do he
-
blames the craziest part is what God
-
does let's
-
pray Heavenly Father we thank you for
-
your amazing grace to us and we ask you
-
to be with us and fill us with your
-
spirit opening our eyes and our ears
-
amen now Adam knew Eve his wife yeah
-
that's what it means and she conceived
-
and bore Cain saying and here's your
-
first hint things aren't going well I
-
have gotten a man with the help of the
-
Lord remember how they fall they've
-
already fallen by saying I can be like
-
God now she's putting herself in a
-
Divine place that well God help but I
-
put this together and again she bore her
-
brother Abel breath that's not a good
-
sign Cain means to acquire breath means
-
Abel means breath it's not a sign and
-
names mattered now Abel was a keeper of
-
the sheep and Cain a worker of the
-
ground in the course of time Cain
-
brought to the Lord an offering of the
-
fruit of the ground and Abel also
-
brought the firstborn of his flock and
-
the fat portions and the Lord had regard
-
it says for Abel's offering but not for
-
Cain's we don't know why because if it's
-
according to the sacrificial system
-
they're the same later it's because one
-
brings it with
-
faith but for Cain his offering he had
-
no regard so here we go Cain was very
-
very
-
angry and his face
-
fell now this is the interesting part
-
we've got jealousy we've got motive as
-
they would tell
-
you and the Lord said to Cain why are
-
you angry why has your face Fallen he's
-
asking him he's trying to help them do
-
you see look at what's really going on
-
if you do well will you not be accepted
-
and if you do not do well sin is
-
crouching at the door this is a
-
fascinating picture this picture they
-
used to believe that there were these
-
things called door demons seems strange
-
but this is the exact language sin is
-
like a door demon waiting for you to
-
walk in the room so he can pounce on you
-
and control you it's fascinating in like
-
an animal sin is seen as the
-
ultimate Evil that wants to
-
destroy think of that in our world where
-
people celebrate
-
sin the biblical truth is it's out there
-
to get you it's out there to destroy
-
you so it's sitting there crouching at
-
the dark its desire is contrary to you
-
but you must rule over it you must can
-
not let this thing in your heart that's
-
you motive of he's already a murderer
-
isn't he cuz he's
-
angry what does Jesus say in Matthew
-
6 I don't say to you just not murder but
-
do not be
-
angry but he's already angry he's going
-
to do it Cain spoke with Abel his
-
brother probably luring him out into the
-
field and when they're in the field Cain
-
rose up against his brother Abel and he
-
kills him Abel's gone he's just done a
-
bit player in this whole story we know
-
nothing about him
-
and he killed him because he was jealous
-
because God said I honor this for
-
whatever reason we don't know why he
-
honored that
-
gift later on as we read in Hebrews 11
-
it's because it was given in faith not
-
just given to get I could do a whole
-
sermon a whole 10 sermons on why you
-
should never give because you think you
-
can get something out of it but I'm
-
going to tell you right now it's
-
interesting Cain's name is to
-
acquire so why did he
-
give I'll leave that with
-
you whatever Abel did he gave from his
-
heart and now he's dead because his
-
brother is jealous this is always about
-
him Cain spoke to Abel's brother and he
-
killed him and then we move on and then
-
the Lord said to Cain where is Abel your
-
brother and he says what he lies
-
remember when the Lord walked in and
-
they had just eaten the
-
Apple it's not an apple but from the
-
Tree of the good and wisdom what does he
-
see where are you the Lord's always
-
seeking us out isn't
-
he they tell the truth you can see the
-
increase in destruction because he lies
-
he says I do not know which is
-
fascinating because that fruit of tree
-
of good and evil or sorry of the wisdom
-
and the knowledge of Good and Evil right
-
they're supposed to know but what does
-
he say I don't know they have access to
-
it but they don't know how to use it and
-
I think that's why that's put in there I
-
do not
-
know because I've already tried to assur
-
you God I don't even know what good from
-
Evil is and thus I do
-
this I'm I My Brother's Keeper oh that
-
will go on for Generations won't it
-
right to our day and the Lord said what
-
have you done the voice of your
-
brother's blood blood is crying to me
-
from the
-
ground there's something we need to
-
understand about
-
God because I'm going to tell you the
-
world doesn't think of God this way God
-
hates when we destroy other
-
people hates it more than you or
-
I he absolutely hates when we mistreat
-
people especially people made in God's
-
image the fact that we have people
-
walking around saying oh Jesus is just
-
love and kindness
-
and he is love he's the kind of love of
-
a parent with children can you imagine
-
how angry you would be if one of your
-
children were
-
killed times it by 10 times it by a
-
thousand the voice of your brother's
-
blood is crying to me from the ground
-
now what what would the just thing to be
-
it actually says in Genesis 9 if this
-
event happens God gives a rule listen to
-
this rule whoever sheds the blood of Man
-
by man shall his blood be shed for God
-
has made man in his own image that's
-
God's standard that's God's standards
-
folks if it came down to Justice this is
-
what should
-
happen all
-
right but what actually
-
happens and now you are cursed from the
-
ground the ground has been cursed now
-
he's cursed remember Adam wasn't cursed
-
but the ground was cursed now Cain is
-
cursed which has opened its mouth to
-
receive your brother's blood from your
-
hand by doing this evil he has created a
-
world where he the world will not give
-
him what he would have liked of it when
-
you work the ground it shall no longer
-
yield to you its strength you shall be a
-
fugitive and a Wanderer on the Earth the
-
greatest punishment besides death and
-
Antiquity is exile back then you live
-
together for survival exiling him he
-
knew was the greatest but why does he
-
Exile him and why is it a a Biblical
-
Justice because biblical truth and
-
goodness Is Us in the presence of
-
God biblical goodness and Truth Is Us in
-
the presence of our community
-
but what does murder do to community and
-
to God separates
-
us he's just giving him a natural
-
consequence of what's going to
-
happen Cain said to the Lord my
-
punishment is greater than I bear I want
-
you to notice something about Cain Cain
-
never once says I shouldn't have done it
-
does he there's no
-
Contrition so don't get too
-
I don't know the
-
word anyways don't think of Cain too
-
highly Cain is not presented as anything
-
but a selfish person who does not want
-
to own what he did his only reason he's
-
upset is he's got caught and he has to
-
suffer the
-
punishment My Punishment is greater than
-
I can
-
bear behold you have driven me today
-
away from the ground and from your face
-
I shall hidden this is the greatest
-
judgment is in the ancient world and in
-
biblical theology is not just you do bad
-
things but you move yourself from the
-
face of God because that's who we were
-
created to be what's Paul's great
-
promise in Corinthians one day we will
-
see face to face amen whoever said that
-
you get a gold
-
star face to face the worst thing that
-
can happen to all of
-
us is to lose God's presence that my
-
friend is
-
hell that my friend is where everything
-
goes
-
off I shall be fugitive and a wander on
-
the earth and whoever Finds Me will kill
-
me now right away people are saying well
-
I thought he was like the first kid well
-
no it didn't work that way the Bible
-
doesn't seem to have any problem with
-
the idea that there were other humanoids
-
that were existing it's talking about
-
this one line and clearly there are
-
people that live out in the outer area
-
he is or they couldn't who would kill
-
him
-
right and he's genuinely concerned if he
-
goes out there he's going to be killed
-
because that's what you did with people
-
in
-
Exile and here's the incredible thing
-
remember you should be killed if you do
-
that I want you to remember that that's
-
the right thing to
-
do but listen to what the Lord says then
-
the Lord said to him not so if anyone
-
kills Cain Vengeance shall be taken on
-
him
-
Sevenfold now why that's so profound is
-
there was a rule in the ancient world
-
that if somebody killed somebody the
-
family could come okay and come and they
-
could kill the person who killed their
-
loved one so what he's saying is if some
-
this is what God's saying if someone
-
does something to Cain I will enact the
-
Vengeance what's he doing by doing that
-
he's saying I'm Cain's family
-
member because only a family member
-
could enact the
-
Justice do you know what you call that
-
folks have you figured it out
-
Mercy you see the funny thing about God
-
is here is a truth that Justice is needs
-
to be meted and he everyone who gets
-
really into fundamentalism loves it but
-
then they never remember that he's
-
actually driven by
-
Mercy even though Justice is deser
-
deserved he gives him
-
Mercy then Ken k Cain went away from the
-
presence of the Lord and he send it
-
settled in the Land of Nod East of
-
Eden simple reality is he's gone he's
-
killed he's done this and God has had
-
mercy upon him but thus Begins the great
-
destruction next week we're going to see
-
an increase of it and there's going to
-
be more and more till we get to Noah's
-
Ark where everybody just lives for hate
-
and violence vience and sexual
-
oppression this is just a beginning
-
family upon family but it leads to
-
murder because he's about himself
-
because he has given in to you can be
-
like God knowing good from Evil he made
-
his choice independent of God and when
-
God told him what to do when God gave
-
him
-
wisdom the Beast is standing at ad door
-
he rather went his way and he was going
-
to see his life destroyed you
-
see and that's the reality of
-
scripture I tell you that because this
-
is shocking to a lot of people in our
-
culture the idea that sin is bad I mean
-
what has happened to
-
sin right when's the last time you were
-
sitting there talking to someone about
-
Sin I'm sure you were talking about
-
disease maybe you were talking about
-
some sort of mental condition right
-
something
-
therapeutic right that's the way the
-
world
-
works but sin sin isn't something we
-
talk about because our world's bought
-
into the idea that humanity is good so
-
if it's good and we're not doing the
-
right thing we just need a little
-
therapy and we'll make him good
-
again that's
-
true why do you think you have
-
psychologists and counselors do you know
-
that the only reason those things took
-
off was because the church Church did
-
not promote sin and it waned the gospel
-
so they needed help they're still messed
-
up they're still
-
Sinners then you get the therapeutic
-
response Bill Maher a true atheist made
-
this
-
note everything that used to be a sin is
-
now a
-
disease right but here's the difference
-
between sin and disease disease is I
-
can't take any blame for it I'm just
-
born this way I just happen to have
-
something happen to me I have a disease
-
please treat me sin says you have every
-
responsibility so why do you think
-
people like
-
disease because they can say why blame
-
me
-
right but sin says it's crouching at
-
your door to destroy you your resp
-
responsible you have a
-
choice whether you like it or not to not
-
let it rule over
-
you unfortunately we have to blame the
-
church in
-
this the church for so many years and I
-
can tell you I could take you down the
-
road to some church somewhere where
-
they're going to tell you it's going to
-
be like a 20-minute Ted Talk on about
-
how you can have become a healthier
-
human
-
being it'll be a rock concert and a TED
-
talk I'm telling you this is the truth
-
and you're going to sit there and listen
-
to about how seven steps to being nicer
-
to your wife or your husband or some
-
other thing some therapeutic thing to
-
help yourself feel
-
better here's the problem with it number
-
one it's like Chinese food you're hungry
-
30 minutes
-
later number two it doesn't
-
work you can only pump somebody up with
-
positive thinking so
-
far you see what's happened is we lost
-
the gospel because the church wanted to
-
be more culturally
-
relevant they wanted to be accepted by
-
the culture they wanted more people in
-
the pews and they forgot that we are
-
supposed to preach about these things it
-
started heavily in 18th century German
-
by the mid 19th century you could go to
-
most churches and hear about nice things
-
about you and why Jesus is there for you
-
to be more
-
fulfilled well H reinold
-
neber and he got a lot of trouble for
-
this quote said that the church is this
-
a god without wrath brought human beings
-
without sin into a kingdom without
-
judgment through the ministrations of a
-
Christ without a
-
cross because it was all about
-
us there was no sin so there needed not
-
be a cross let alone Jesus Jesus
-
actually became a glorified
-
psychoanalysis
-
person am I in trouble for saying
-
this and we wondered why we had so many
-
people sitting in pews listening to this
-
but so few people living it in the
-
world because sin is always there and we
-
can't get rid of it through a TED
-
Talk motivational speech does not cure
-
this this thing that's deep within
-
us so now I'm going to sound like a 19th
-
century preacher so you're going to have
-
to hold
-
on I'm going to talk about the reality
-
of
-
sin I feel like I should put on like
-
those robes you know they had pound
-
it sin is really
-
bad sin that comes within us has one
-
goal to destroy
-
us sin sin has one goal and that is to
-
destroy who you are to take your
-
humanity and lessen it and lessen it and
-
lessen it until you are exiled from the
-
presence of God forever that's its
-
goal it's not a joke I remember my uncle
-
saying to me well I'd rather go to hell
-
with all my friends in the parties than
-
go to heaven and play a
-
harp well first of all just so you guys
-
know that's not the escaton you're not
-
going to be sitting in heaven playing a
-
harp with Philadelphia cream cheese that
-
is
-
paganism but see what he misunderstood
-
is all those friends he wanted to go and
-
party with what their lives were doing
-
was destroying their very
-
Soul Oswald Chambers remember what sin
-
is the fundamental independence of God
-
the thing in me that says I can do
-
without God God I don't need him and
-
then we make choices like
-
Cain we no longer listen to God who says
-
don't do it we no longer listen for our
-
own good because we're too smart for our
-
own good sexual proclivity I can do this
-
I'm born that
-
way and to God they
-
ignore anger
-
greed well like I can handle it and sin
-
sits there at the door and
-
destroys I knew a gentleman very well in
-
our neighborhood growing up and he had a
-
problem with gambling by the way I don't
-
think you guys realize how damaging the
-
addiction of gambling is we don't talk
-
about
-
it and here he was with his four kids
-
and he said and my dad actually said to
-
him at some point I don't know if you
-
should
-
Gamble but he kept gambling because he
-
knew
-
better and I watched as his house was
-
taken his kids were taken and he was
-
left stuck in an apartment and he
-
eventually committed
-
suicide sin is sitting there and it
-
wants us to destroy
-
us and sin comes in and I love this
-
analogy because man has been created in
-
God's image sin is not natural I want
-
you to understand that it's not natural
-
remember the first two chapters in
-
Genesis where we were made in God's
-
image to be a priest and King and all
-
those good things it comes in because we
-
welcome it
-
in and it's not natural sin is the def
-
de deformation of
-
man it is a cancer it is a sickness
-
under death which has inflicted
-
man it wants to destroy
-
you it's known not just that you have a
-
little bit of a
-
disease it's not just that you have a
-
little bit of something that oh that
-
darn part of me I'm Just Being Human no
-
it wasn't way you were created and it's
-
there to destroy
-
you and
-
me and I can tell you the
-
truth Genesis doesn't give us by the end
-
good news on
-
it the Old
-
Testament gives us hints of what God
-
might do but there's no
-
hope but I get to sit here and preach to
-
you about somebody who gave us
-
hope I want you to know without Jesus
-
Christ you will be destroyed and away
-
from God
-
forever because of sin all of you
-
including me I know some I'm not such a
-
bad person
-
H well I've studied humanity and you're
-
part of it do you remember how they
-
dealt with with the toilet paper about 5
-
years ago
-
H I read 60% of people would happily
-
have ratted on their neighbor for not
-
wearing a
-
mask you think we're
-
good
-
H I'm telling you something that these
-
young gentlemen had to figure out or
-
they wouldn't have been sitting
-
here I'm a piece of
-
garbage good news guys so am I
-
but there was somebody who played the
-
cost and this is the gospel until you
-
understand sin for what it is you'll
-
never understand the gospel if you think
-
it's just a disease then Jesus has no
-
real help for
-
you at the cross God wrapped his heart
-
in flesh and blood and let it be nailed
-
to the cross for our
-
Redemption sin is is that bad Sin wants
-
to destroy you sin wants to kill you and
-
the god of Heaven and Earth to deal with
-
it became human and though he didn't
-
have any of it he took that upon himself
-
for
-
us that's
-
incredible there is no other way to get
-
to God no motivational speaker no nice
-
thoughts no
-
psychoanalysis there is
-
only the way of the
-
cross the cross is the only way we deal
-
with the fact that this sin has
-
controlled us and it has controlled us
-
and he came and took it upon himself
-
that's the only reason and if you think
-
there's any other reason then you need
-
to go back and
-
repent because one of the things that
-
happens when you've been in church in a
-
while I know this cuz it's happened to
-
me is you start you know your first you
-
go oh praise the Lord I've been saved
-
God did all this and then you start
-
thinking wow I'm pretty
-
special I'm going to tell you you do and
-
you might even say boy God's lucky to
-
have
-
me he's
-
not here's the reality guys you're only
-
here because of his Mercy in the
-
cross I'm only
-
here you see the cross does something
-
something
-
incredible the cross shows us how deeply
-
this has affected us cuz we nailed them
-
to it didn't we do you ever see The
-
Passion of
-
Christ there's a scene where Jesus's
-
nails are going into his hands and I
-
found out later that they it was Mel
-
Gibson's hand they said why did you do
-
that you're a director of the movie and
-
he goes I wanted to show it was me who
-
put him on that cross
-
and that's the unbelievable thing about
-
the cross is it shows us exactly our
-
guilt how far we are like
-
Cain but it
-
also shows us the way
-
out it shows us in a stunning
-
way how we can live
-
again don't know if you guys can read
-
this so I'll read it am Bruner by the
-
way good friend of bonhoff and all those
-
great
-
Germans only only at the Cross of Christ
-
does man see fully what it is that
-
separates him from God yet it is here
-
alone that he perceives that he is no
-
longer separated from
-
God nowhere else does the inviable
-
Holiness of God the impossibility of
-
overlooking the guilt of man stand out
-
more
-
plainly but nowhere else does the
-
Limitless in mercy of God which utterly
-
transcends all human standards stand
-
stand out more clearly and
-
plainly I'm going to tell you something
-
Paul said to the Corinthians I claim to
-
know nothing but Christ
-
crucified why because that was
-
it that was the truth of his guilt and
-
his
-
forgiveness and it is for you and I as
-
well praise God
-
e that he did that for
-
us or we would be right down Cane's
-
alley but it doesn't end there does
-
it I have some good news and some bad
-
news you want which one do you want
-
first I'm going to give you the bad
-
news you're still going to
-
sin I'm telling you guys I got baptized
-
today you're not going to walk out of
-
here and Float 5T off the Earth for the
-
next 40 50 years of your
-
life that same Beast will continue to
-
creep we have been saved we have been
-
given the Holy Spirit but guess what my
-
friends and by the way if you don't
-
believe me ask the older people who've
-
journeyed in this Faith
-
longer they'll be the first to tell you
-
you're going to
-
sin and in fact the more you spend time
-
with
-
God the more that sin is going to bite
-
you because you're also going to know
-
what your life could be like
-
it doesn't mean you'll sin all the time
-
and you will have
-
Victory but it's going to be a
-
battle it's going to be a battle you
-
guys and here's the good news you ready
-
for this he saved us on that cross he
-
brought us back into his F into his
-
realm and then he gave us the greatest
-
gift of all the ability to confess
-
sin you see it's not a oneoff is
-
it we deal with sin on the cross he
-
dealt with that but now how do we deal
-
with it until we arrive he gave us this
-
great gift that if you confess your sins
-
you're
-
forgiven anybody else wake up and you've
-
had a particularly sinful go and you've
-
wondered does God love
-
me this is a tough crowd because I know
-
you're
-
lying has anyone else sat there I know I
-
have and said I don't even know if I'm a
-
Christian
-
yeah you know one of those days where
-
you get cut off in traffic
-
H I know you're all like perfect but I
-
can assure you there are moments and
-
days especially when you're with your
-
spouse and they're peeing you
-
off and you go to bed angry and you hear
-
that verse don't go to bed angry now
-
you're more
-
mad and you think if I don't go to bed
-
angry I'll be up for four weeks
-
we've all been
-
there and then there's a voice that says
-
confess your
-
sins you know when I start these
-
Services I do the confession why do we
-
do everything we do here by the way some
-
of it might be foreign to some of you
-
what we do is our liturgy we do here
-
whether it's prayer whether it's
-
confession whether it's the reading of
-
scripture is the Liturgy of your life 6
-
days a week what you're supposed to be
-
doing we just do it together once
-
and when we confess our sins together
-
I'm not a priest I don't have the power
-
but he has proclaimed that if we do it
-
we're
-
forgiven and I'm trying to say to you
-
guys good news when you're having that
-
day then the first thing you should do
-
is run towards them because it's going
-
to feel like it's the last thing you
-
should
-
do and I'll tell you something a friend
-
said to me as crazy emry when I confess
-
my sins after I've blown it I feel like
-
he's almost closer after
-
you feel that way because you feel the
-
distance and he's right
-
back I'm telling you right now you
-
should confess your sins every
-
day John's gospel if we say we have no
-
sin we deceive ourselves and the truth
-
is not in us so if you're around anyone
-
who says I'm perfect or you can be
-
perfect the truth isn't in
-
them okay I want you to hear that there
-
is no place you're going to arrive
-
outside of the Resurrection we will be
-
groaning until that
-
day but oh thank goodness for the
-
bud if we confess our sins to God he is
-
faithful and just to forgive us our
-
sins and to cleanse us from all
-
unrighteousness that's something you can
-
take home to the bank that's something
-
you can say CU there are times where
-
you're saying I confessed my sins but
-
did God forgive me say this to yourself
-
he is just and faithful to cleanse us
-
from all unrighteousness that's his
-
promise I heard somebody say keep short
-
accounts it's the best thing you can
-
do unfortunately there are those who
-
think and we all been there that somehow
-
we're getting this Christianity thing
-
licked we've got it down especially when
-
you're in leadership and everyone's like
-
oh you a pastor
-
I've hung out with pastors too
-
long we're all Sinners guys and the
-
first thing we need to do is to tell
-
people that I am a sinner that's what
-
Paul said what did Paul say I am the
-
chief of Sinners that's what he
-
said think of that Paul if Paul can call
-
him the CH self the chief of Sinners I
-
pretty sure you're okay to say it too
-
Carl Bart did something very profound
-
Carl Bart during the time of the not
-
rise of the Nazis he would go to these
-
jails and preach to these inmates now
-
Carl Bart I love Carl Bart because he
-
could have been sitting in bond he was a
-
doctor he was the most famous Theologian
-
Bon Hofer he had taught he had done all
-
these things he could have done these
-
great things but he goes into these
-
places into right into the depths of the
-
jails the hardest
-
inmates and here's what he said
-
when I come before these men I do not
-
have to explain that we are all sinners
-
they have committed every sin there
-
is all I have to tell them is that I too
-
am a
-
sinner any preacher that gets up and
-
gives you the illusion that he's her is
-
above you should be kicked off this
-
stage let me tell you right now I too am
-
a
-
sinner when I'm preaching these sermons
-
I'm not preaching at you I'm preaching
-
to
-
me the first person that runs down when
-
the altar call is me I just do it before
-
you because I've already planned
-
it and that's what makes the gospel so
-
much that I keep doing this and I get
-
cited is it says that he died for my
-
sins and that Emory on his worst day
-
will never be thrown out because of what
-
he
-
did that he washed me and he will never
-
kick me out of his presence all I have
-
to do is admit it that's
-
it Cain didn't did
-
he all I have to do is say God yeah I
-
yelled at my wife and I'm sorry forgiven
-
God I fingered the guy while I was
-
driving who cut me off and you say emry
-
you would never do that well you're
-
you're right but I'm using some
-
examples
-
forgiven forgiven forgiven
-
forgiven start living that way and you
-
start becoming free because you're not
-
carrying the weights of the world and
-
then the Spirit can come alive and start
-
transforming you
-
inside yes I can do it because the
-
gospel frees us to confess our sins
-
without fear of condemnation we should
-
be the most honest human beings on the
-
planet because our sins have already
-
been paid for and the fact that we try
-
and put on errors should be one of the
-
biggest mistakes we
-
do because the truth is we're all
-
sinners
-
but there is some good news too my
-
friends he doesn't want to just leave us
-
there I'm not telling you that you're
-
going to have to do every sin that
-
challenge is still there to us sin is
-
crouching at the door you must fight
-
it and the good news though you'll sin
-
the more you walk with the Lord the more
-
you can fight it you can even begin to
-
rule over it but not because of
-
you because of the grace of our Lord
-
Jesus Christ and His holy
-
spirit so I'm going to say something to
-
you and I'm going to end on this and the
-
reason I want to end on this is because
-
I think it's so
-
important date line at the end
-
interviews the guy who got caught he's
-
already been charged he's going to jail
-
and almost every time he talks about how
-
he wish he hadn't got caught and why is
-
it his responsibility and blah blah blah
-
blah blah
-
but once in a
-
while the guy looks and says man did I
-
blow it I was living for myself and I
-
took a human life and there's nothing I
-
can
-
do I've noticed something in these
-
episodes that the ones who refuse to
-
confess and admit they never get
-
connected again with
-
Community that's the other thing cuz
-
they lie and there are Vic
-
victims and you don't own it
-
yourself no one can trust
-
you but the ones who own it and say I
-
did this I actually see forgiveness
-
happening that's crazy because I don't
-
know what I would
-
do but there's something about
-
confession that brings us back into
-
community and because of that we must
-
confess because confessing also makes us
-
real you see when you confess your sins
-
you're now saying to everyone in this
-
room I'm not better than
-
you I'm exactly like
-
you now we can be brothers
-
again I truly believe in confession and
-
that's why we do it
-
here I believe it should be a discipline
-
that we practice our whole
-
lives the discipline of confession
-
brings an end to
-
pretense God is calling into being a
-
church that can openly confess its frail
-
humanity and know the forgiving and
-
empowering Graces of
-
Christ so are you going to
-
confess I'm going to take a moment while
-
the band comes
-
up and I'm going to invite us not out
-
loud but if you got something heavy on
-
your
-
heart I want you to take that moment and
-
just confess it because he's here right
-
now let's
-
pray Heavenly Father we thank you for
-
your Amazing Grace we come now when we
-
lay before
-
you our
-
sins for
-
amen my
-
friends he is just and faithful to
-
forgive you you're
-
free you're
-
free go and live
-
it and the next time you feel it confess
-
right away cuz that's when you'll start
-
living Zoey Abundant
-
Life amen
