Genesis 6:1-8 - ”Increasing Chaos” - Who Are We Series

our Old Testament reading is Genesis 6

veres 1 through

8 when man began to multiply on the face

of the land and daughters were born to

them the sons of God saw that the

daughters of man were attractive and

they took as their wives any they chose

then the Lord said my spirit shall not

abide in man forever for he is flesh his

days shall be 120 years the Nephilim

were on the earth in those days and also

afterward when the sons of God came into

the daughters of man and they bore

children to them these were the Mighty

Men Who were of old the men of

renown the Lord saw that the wickedness

of man was great in the earth and that

every intention of the thoughts of his

heart was only evil

continually and the Lord regretted that

he had made man on the earth and it

grieved him to his heart so the Lord

said I will blot out man whom I have

created from the face of the land man

and animals and creeping things and

birds of the heavens for I am sorry that

I have made them but Noah found favor in

the eyes of the

Lord our new testament reading is Luke

17: 22 through

37 and he said to the disciples the days

are coming when you will desire to see

one of the days of the son of man and

you will not see it and they will say to

you look there or look here do not go

out or follow them for as the lightning

flashes and lights up the sky from one

side to the other so will the son of man

be in his day but first he must suffer

many things and be rejected by this

generation just as it was in the days of

Noah so will it be in the days of the

son of man they were eating and drinking

and marrying and being given in marriage

until the day when Noah entered the Ark

and the flood came and destroyed them

all likewise just as it was in the days

of lot they were eating and drinking

buying and selling painting planting and

building but on the day when lot went

out from Sodom fire and sulfur rained

from heaven and destroyed them all so

will it be on the day when the son of

man is

revealed on that day let the one who is

on the on the housetop with his Goods on

in the house not come down to take them

away and likewise let the one who is in

the field not turn back remember Lot's

wife whoever seeks to preserve his life

will lose it but whoever loses his life

will keep it I tell you in that night

there will be two in one bed one will be

taken and the other left there will be

two women grinding together one will be

taken and the other left and they said

to him where Lord he said to them where

the corpse is there the vultures will

gather this is the word of the Lord

you I want to make sure I start off with

a joke because this is a heavy

text so

hers that's what I was kind of hoping to

get out of you

so I got this one and now I get to

punish him backl well as we saw in our

prayers of the people we are in a crazy

political time

right everybody's talking about politics

right now Ukrainian Flags meetings it's

all nuts again it's funny because it

reminds me of 2001

January this time it was a different

leader who got in charge and it was a

different group of people who were

upset and there were people who were

whipping Canadian flags out against

vaccines and other things like that do

you remember those days and there were

people American flags and the first

Sunday I decided to preach Revelation

during that time as you remember and my

first Sunday was right after January 6th

2001

2021 and as I preached Revelation I

realized oh my gosh what am I do

doing and the question is how do you

deal with this as a

minister how do you deal with it it

obviously is on all of your hearts I

hear it I see posts I see churches

posting I see the ministers posting on

how do we deal with something like this

now some would never talk about it fair

enough I

will because I think we are making

massive mistakes again as the church I'm

not talking about the world the world's

going to

world but the church always has such

great opportunities during these times

of

Crisis and we always end up making the

wrong

decision I'm going to use not Trump or

Biden I'm going to go back to something

where hopefully we all agree right

that's hard to find so I'm going to talk

about these two guys can we all agree

that these AR the best guys ever can we

yes there's no one here who going to be

like I'm offended you spoke of Hitler

that way right like is that okay we're

all in the same boat all right so let's

use these two guys over 100 million

people died in the 20th century because

of these two

clowns and neither one was by the way

better than the other in fact you could

argue Joseph stalon if it was body count

did much

worse but they were the both the same

type of people they were true dictator

they truly believed what they were doing

right and they dominated their

world so the question is I let's go back

to their world what did the church

do maybe then we can learn how we should

response to our world which so far isn't

that what does a church do during these

times of intense realities where people

like that

exist and I don't think we're there and

I don't think people like that are here

right now thank God CU I don't think I'd

be leading this church right

now so what do we do well these two guys

were incredibly intelligent and you say

you compliment them absolutely they were

Geniuses and the one thing they were

most genius in is they both knew they

needed

Christianity to keep

ruling did you know that

neither of them believed it Stalin was a

Marxist Hitler was a

Nichi Nishan uh

nationalist both do not like

religion but they kept the church around

they organized the church they gave

Church power they gave them significance

they let the church sing their praises

they organized a formal National

Church they made sure the media pumped

the church and the church then went off

and told stories and you've seen

pictures of Nazi

flags at Communion tables you've seen

this you've seen the German priests

wearing their

swastika

stols and you can go back and see

National Socialist Communist Flags in

churches in Russia in their formal

churches they knew this was going to

work and the church largely gave

in the church largely gave in to what

was going

on but not

all so the question is they're all

heroes now they weren't then Bon Hoffer

who stood up when they were there they

were hated but now they're

celebrated you're always celebrated

after the

event what did they do

right well I think they did one thing

right all of them they went to

scripture they didn't go to CNN or Fox

News or CBC or whatever else they went

to

scripture and in doing that they created

an amazing response and I think we need

to listen to it or we will become what

Revelation calls worshippers of the

Beast let's

pray Heavenly

Father we pray that you give us eyes to

see and ears to hear I know I'm speaking

on a very tense

subject please don't have any Tomatoes

hit

me I pray that we will listen that our

hearts will be softened and that will

consider how we might be a witness

during this

time

ohen well you might wonder why am I

preaching on this well you remember I

preached on it way back in 2021 and I'm

just going to remind you what I said

back then cuz I actually went back and

looked and by the way I had less gray

hair like a lot so covid thanks a

lot I said this at the at the thing I

said you cannot worship Joe Biden I said

that you can't put your trust in Joe

Biden remember he was the pr president

then and I said and goodness gracious

don't worship Donald Trump that's what I

said in fact I said if you worship

either one of those or put your hope in

them you're worshiping the

Beast I didn't make a lot of

friends guess how I'm going to start

today saying the exact same thing

if your hope is in these national

leaders and your joy and peace is in

them and they throw you off it's a

symptom you are worshiping an

idol so let's go back to

scripture I didn't want to preach this

scripture because this scripture is the

most misunderstood you should have seen

our Bible study it was a carck we

started talking about who are the sons

of man and who are the Nephilim and all

of these really bizarre things in this

text when I asked you could I stop in

chapter 3 I was thinking of this

text do you remember

that so I'm going to ask you to listen

listen closely because it's a tough text

but I think we can get somewhere with it

starts off right away when man began to

multiply in the face of the land of

daughters were born to them and then we

sing we have our first problem the sons

of of God saw that they were Daughters

of men were attractive and they took do

not miss that word they took for

ownership as their wives any that they

chose so here's our first problem who

are the sons of man well there are two

translations I'm not going to go to all

of them because there's tons there are

two that are realistically possible the

first one which I'm not going to preach

on is the fact that in job it talks

about the sons of God being Angels so

there's two time three times in job

where the sons of God are titled as

Angels so if you believe that that's

what's being referred to here you're

going to have to believe that the

Genesis writer is going over to job to

borrow this language of Son of God and

then he's saying angels or Fallen Angels

had sex with human beings okay it's a

possible reading I can't say it's not

and out of that came the Nephilim who

were the spirit Angel human being

mix and that is one that is popular on

YouTube I found

out that and that they're

aliens I don't hold to this view in fact

I strongly don't and I'll tell you why I

don't hold to this view number one there

has been no mention of angels yet in

Genesis literarily all of a sudden he's

he's building this argument he's gone

through the genealogy of Cain he's gone

through lamek he's building up the

increase of

sin and all of a sudden he just drops

this story about angels popping in and

hey going on dates with

women seems odd doesn't

it but it's more popular why is it more

popular because it's more esoteric like

people like to like watch Ghost Hunters

right it's a little crazier right and

then and but my argument is listen the

Bible is already opaque enough we don't

have to add opaqueness to it because it

makes us feel

good so no I don't hold this particular

view the view that I hold of what's

going on and I think it speaks to the

continuation of the

story is that the son of Gods comes

right out of the Mesopotamian world

where this is written you must remember

that our creation story is lock step

with a creation story called The

gilgames Epic they're speaking to one

another in 17 points just in Noah's Arc

story they say the exact same

things the Mesopotamians and Assyrians

hung

out with the Jews did you know that our

friend Abraham came out of er where was

ER

Mesopotamia this is a story that existed

so why is it being written and if you

believe what I believe that this has

been given as God breathe to debunk the

paganism of the Mesopotamian ISM

Mesopotamians and telling us the truth

about God then we should find the truth

within this by relying on what they're

saying but then saying what God means by

this so what did the Mesopotamians

believe the sons of God word first of

all they did not believe the sons of God

had sexual relations with

angels their sons of God were the people

who would become king and they had sex

with the gods do you hear me so they had

sex with the gods so the hero in the

Gilgamesh epic which is the Mesopotamian

creation story is seen to be 2/3 God

one-third human and it was not unusual

you can think of Thor or Hercules where

these children in these Pagan stories

would come through relations with the

gods but the more important thing for

everyone that lived around them was

that's why they could be Kings cuz they

are the sons of God and that would

continue right through Egypt where they

were called the sons of God because they

believed that the Pharaoh was a child of

the god thus he could rule it went right

through to

Jerome Lord and Savior Son of God it

said on on the

coin for the

Caesar this idea that you have Divine

Providence that makes you a king or that

a Son of God is how you dominated cuz

how dare you have a revolution against a

god do you see

why in that world Genesis is writing a

story and he says when man began to

multiply in the face of the land

Mesopotamia Assyria and daughters were

born to them the sons of God these guys

who saw themselves as

kings do you see it human beings in

Authority Kings real Kings decided to

come and now we have the fallenness of

power that's what you see here you have

Kings you have these guys who can Lord

it over and here's where sin

increases these guys looked and the lust

took over also the desire for power cuz

the more wives you could get back then

the more powerful with you were and they

took they took this is why I know this

is part of it cuz every time in Genesis

someone takes something it is

domineering it's Injustice it's I'm

taking what isn't

mine they took as their wives as many as

they

chose so you see see systemic abuse now

what's going on the first

sin is the wreck between God and man in

the garden the second is family against

family with Cain and Abel right and then

you see genealogy sin and the increase

of sin with those genealogies and now

we're at the peak of Injustice and you

have Kings now destroying

people as lesser than them by taking

them and owning them this is all about

Injustice that's what this is all

about and how do I know that my friends

because the next line is

Judgment the next line is dealing with

this Injustice of leaders dominating

other people you can see why this text

is powerful today with people

complaining that leaders are

dominating what is go Yahweh

response my spirit shall not abide in

man forever for he is flesh his days

shall be 120 years every Theologian says

this is a judgment on these people

dominating and taking in other words

you're not going to get to do it forever

this is a mercy to those who have been

taken this is a mercy of those who've

been unjustly treated I am limiting the

lifespan and that's why it's there so

what do we have women being born to man

and these superhero guys that have been

made Kings in Assyria and Mesopotamia

have grabbed their wives and made them

their own God sees that this is not

God's plan and he says no way you're

getting away with this forever 12 120

years do you

understand if not uh ask somebody

else oh no then these guys show

up okay I'm going to tell you right now

we don't have a clue who these guys are

I'm just prepping you and nobody does

it's just here the Nephilim all right

scary music starts we're on Earth in

those days who are these guys I don't

know they're really good swimmers

because they're the only ones or one of

the only other ones that are on the

genealogies on the other side of the

flood so that's a joke

um they were on Earth in those days it

says when the sons of man were there and

also afterward when the sons of God came

into the daughters of man the main

theory that people like is that these

guys were the children of the women and

the sons of God these crazy Nephilim

except it doesn't really say that it

says they were on Earth in those days

that they met and afterwards it makes no

actual comment that they are the product

of a relationship between the sons of

man and the sons of God and women

whoever these guys are they're worth

noting whoever these guys are the

Ancients knew who they were and whoever

these guys are we have no

idea remind yourself this was written to

them for us they would have understood

this I don't and if you do good for you

you can preach next week all

right and also afterwards when the Son

of God came into the daughters of man

and they bore children to them doesn't

say that these are the nephlim this is

when these heroic people who saw

themselves as half Kings started having

children with these wives they took

these were the Mighty Men Who were of

old the men of renowned most people

believe that they're speaking about the

sons of God not the Nephilim at this

point so why does this

matter well whatever's going on there

with these Nephilim and the Son of God

and all of the taking the Lord this is

your point sees it as chaos remember God

made things good but now things have

gone off the

rails the Lord saw that the wickedness

of man was great in the earth and that

every intention of the thoughts of his

heart was only evil

continually and the Lord regretted that

he had made man on Earth and it grieved

him to his heart so he looks at what's

going on with these sons of man

dominating women and he no doubt starts

with King pain en aable it starts in the

garden doesn't it this constant fall of

sin and destruction and by the time we

get to this section the author wants to

say that human beings rather than

choosing order and good have chosen

chaos and

evil that's the fruit of where this

goes and it's got to end he's looked at

his Ledger and this has not ended

well so he says I will blot up qu man

whom I have created from the face of the

land man and animals and creeping things

and birds of the heaven for I am sorry

that I made made them and notice the way

he said that he took all the first seven

days and he talked about how he has to

remove with cha from this world this

chaos right this is where he is this is

the why reason I started with a

joke and then you'd think it ends and

it's all ending

but it never just ends with this

God just like when Cain should have been

killed but he leaves Cain and has Mercy

right he just continues to have this

Mercy thing going on and then it says

but Noah found favor in the eyes of the

Lord and we're left thankfully at the

end of this section with at least some

hope

right the point being folks of this text

is this has become the high point and

and this has become leaders dominating

Great

Men

dominating and destroying people made in

God's image and God's had

enough he's limited them he's judged

them and that's our first story of God

dealing with

Kings and it isn't great is

it well I want you to note one thing

about this

story it started in Genesis 1:10 God saw

Genesis 1:10

that it was good and what was he talking

about the creation of Men In His Image

male and

female but Things Fall Apart right and

the literary style wants you to see this

as soon as it happens it's the woman who

sees right that the tree was good the

same Hebrew words and she took do you

see that and you see the fall

begin well he doesn't want to miss this

in this section because what happens

with our Mighty sons of God the sons of

God saw the daughters of Abraham Adam

that they were beautiful

T and they la which can mean took them

you

see what what we see is Humanity

taking God seeing what he created as

good but Humanity taking and this last

section these leaders are taking it's

the high point of Destruction people I'm

going to be God I'm going to take for

myself so what happens in the end again

the Lord sees how great now the

wickedness has come the good of chapter

1 is ended In The End by chapter 8 verse

8 of chapter 6 that the human race had

become on the Earth

and so what happens next we'll stick

around next week where I'm going to

struggle

again the reality is the Bible doesn't

hide one

thing authoritarian abuse and right from

chapter 6 on it talks about it the Bible

talks a lot about Kings doesn't it the

Bible talks about Kings more than you

probably think more than

sexuality interestingly it talks about

leaders

all of the

time and by the way it doesn't have a

high view of it

ever I can't help but remember this

quote Lord Acton I love these guys Lord

oon the

Englishman he's being told that they

should follow the pope again or a king

he said I cannot accept your cannon that

we are to judge Pope and King unlike

other men with a favorable

presupposition that the they do no wrong

if there is any

presupposition I almost think he's read

his Bible it is the other way around

holders of power power tends to corrupt

and absolute power corrupts

absolutely good thing we haven't seen

that in the history of humanity

eh a study was recently

done in Africa and they wanted to see

they they were expecting and hoping to

see societies and these African tribes

how they work together in

cohesion and what they began to do these

archaeologists is they looked for

cohesive tribes and they couldn't find

one there was always violence there was

always domination so the final study

they did is they figured out that as

soon as a tribe got over 50 people there

would be slaves and Kings 50 of

us it is in our nature to

dominate you need to know that and the

Bible doesn't shy away from

it and God's been trying to tell us

through scripture that we must never

worship Earthly

Kings says it again and again you

remember the time of s Samuel right do

you remember that and Samuel and God

saying I'm their King and he's leading

them and he's LED them out and and all

of a sudden they say we want a king like

the world

right listen my friends in light of the

sons of

God what Kings in this world are like

this is Samuel's

warning to absolute

power so Samuel told all the words of

the Lord to the people who were asking

for a king from him he said these will

be the ways of the king who will reign

over you he will take your son and

appoint them to the Chariots and to be

the horsemen and to run before the

Chariots in other words they're going to

be Cannon

fder do our Kings do that with our young

people and He will appoint for himself

commanders and thousands of commanders

of 50s and some to plow his ground and

to reap his Harvest and to make his

Implements of War and the equipment of

his chariots he will take your daughters

to be perfumers and cooks and

Bakers he will take the best of your

Fields you notice how it

changes his everything and now he's

going to take yours and that word take

is always there and Vineyards and oil

archers and give them to his servants he

will take the tenth of your grain and of

your Vineyards and give it to his

officers and to his servants he will

take your male servants and female

servants and the best of your young men

and your donkeys and put them together

for whose

work

his he will take a tenth of your flocks

and you shall be

his

slaves that's what authoritarianism

does and in that day you will cry out

because of your king whom you have

chosen for yourselves but the Lord will

not answer you in that

day God does not believe in Earthly

powers being all that not like we do he

knows exactly what they're going to be

like if you read the Old Testament how

about the book of Kings this King was

really bad this one was worse this one

was worse this one was kind of bad but

he kept leaving the Pagan poles up on

the mountains that's basically the Kings

if you want to read a depressing book

read the book of Kings you say well what

about David let's talk about

David you want to talk about David

one of the worst kings that ever

came he had the heart of God yes he did

shows that God's gracious because he did

horrible things to his political

opponents and we're not even talking

about the guy that he sent in the front

of the line because he wanted his

wife that's

evil how about

Solomon old wise Solomon read by the end

of that where they're complaining

because he's enslaved them

there is no heroes in the stories of the

Kings because it the prophets are

fulfilling this you almost get a sense

that something's evil is driving this

kind of stuff right well let me tell you

the Bible says it is do you remember the

Temptation Of

Christ Jesus said again as is written

shall not put your God your test but I

want to go to this point again the devil

took him to a very high mountain and

showed him all the kingdoms of the world

and their glory and he said to him all

these things I will give you if you fall

down and worship me you know what that

means the devil's got some power for

these things doesn't

he Jesus replied be gone Satan for it is

written you shall Worship the Lord your

God and him only shall you serve so

there we see the first hint of what we

do with this

stuff we don't worship the king kingdoms

of this age which are run by things far

darker than we'd even know if you guys

know how little you know you wouldn't

put flags up every time a new event

happened I promise you there are things

going on behind the scenes I remember

studying the Vietnam War anybody study

that and what the people believed and

then what truth was and we know

now they wouldn't have put their flags

up

but there's a hope in the text worldly

kings are always seen like the sons of

man but there's a hope there's an

underlying hope in the Old Testament

that something's going to happen that

maybe God will become king again at

least through a

proxy and we say it every east every uh

we say one of thems every Christmas we

read this text all the time and we like

it cuz unto us a child is born

everyone's like oh that's nice a baby

but what they miss is the promise of

what this child's going to

bring for unto us a child is Bored unto

us a son is given and the government

shall be upon his shoulder and his name

Shall be Called wonderful counselor

Mighty God Everlasting father Prince of

Peace of the increase of his

what government we don't focus on that

because we like Jesus and God living up

in heaven not caring about this world

but I tell you they

do and there was a plan in the prophets

they knew God had shown them that one

day God's going to be king

again of the increase of government and

peace there shall be to no end how about

Psalm 2 the most beautiful Psalm about

kingships and he says I will declare the

decree the son the Lord has said to me

you are my son today I have begotten you

the Son of God you see that where does

it wrap it up ask of me and I will give

you the

what heaven and

angels the

world the Nations for your inheritance

and the ends of the Earth your

possession you shall break them with a

rod of iron you shall Dash them with the

pieces like a Potter's vessel this is

language of

kingship and this is what the Old

Testament held together the Israelites

had chosen human Kings and it doesn't

look good but God keeps promising in the

Psalms in the prophets all through the

good news I'm going to deal with

this

H and then they waited didn't they

didn't they wait and they waited and

they waited and nothing came and it

looked like nothing would happen they

tried to take it into their own hands to

force God to be king and then somebody

showed

up

right and he became king

I want you to hear me right now Jesus is

your

savior Jesus is your Lord but he's also

King and that means he's in

charge and we know that in his cross

through the gospels when he gets with

that thorn stuck on his head when he had

King of the Jews put behind a mockery

mocking that they were actually speaking

truth

that the true king was glorified on a

cross showed that he is nothing like the

kings of this age nothing like the sons

of man nothing like the kings that

Samuel warned him about he was a good

King wasn't

he and he died for them and he rose

again and he was inaugurated the moment

he ascended read Daniel 7 all that

language of the son of man going to the

Ancient of Days is

wrapped wrapped around and he will be

the leader of the

world in his

governance and then Paul is writing to

the Philippians and what's he saying to

these mostly Roman citizens Roman

legionaries he tells

this have this mind among yourself which

is yours in Jesus Christ who though he

was in the form God did not count

equality with God as thing to be grasped

how unlike Adam

but emptied himself by taking the form

of a servant a slave in this case being

born in the likeness of

men interesting how God made us in the

likeness of God he does the

opposite and being found in human form

he humbled himself by becoming obedient

to the point of death even death on a

cross this is the moment of why he is

the King how he earned it therefore now

listen to this inauguration

speech God has highly exalted him and

bestowed on him the name that is above

every other name that's what Kings were

told I am the king above every other

name so that at the name of Jesus every

knee should bow in heaven and on Earth

and under the Earth he's not just king

of now he's the king of

everything amen amen thank

you and every tongue confess that Jesus

Christ is Lord why is that so important

because the people he's writing to they

had to confess that Caesar was

Lord when Paul writes this he's making a

point there is a king and God is King

and Jesus is King and he's earned it and

he's the only one and he's the ultimate

King in other words he's the only

King to the glory of the father

that's

incredible in other words there's only

one politician we should worry

about because there's only one in

power why are we seeing so much Focus

anxiety anger hatred shot by Christian

to Christian over these

leaders that are like the sons of

God like the Kings warned about us

why are we doing

it because we don't

believe because we're Idol

worshippers because we think my friends

that the kings of this age are the kings

that have control and they

don't Timothy Keller most people want

Jesus as a consultant rather than a king

and he doesn't come out

way most of us like Jesus but don't try

and tell us what to

do or we'll take your advice and see

what we think we see him as far off

while the real world of politics happen

here and he's like not really Sovereign

at that point so we have to spend our

times worrying all the time about what's

happening here and so when somebody

posts that flag of Ukraine

woohoo or no or the American flag let's

boo

it because we're idle

worshippers I know I'm going to get

shot but I'm telling you from a

Christian biblical perspective oh my

Lord my friends the kids are back I got

to be

nice probably a Biblical perspective the

warning is so so strong when I did

Revelation please believe me it said if

you worship the Beast you will be

destroyed and what was worshiping the

Beast worshiping and making vows to the

Caesar worshiping the Caesar how many

people are worshiping the Caesar or

hating the Caesar and worshiping a

different

Caesar I'm telling you right

now the world's screwed

up it's going to continue to be screwed

up I don't care whether your part's in

or the other parties in and I guarantee

in this room right now I know enough

people I know some of you would totally

disagree

guaranteed and my comment to you is who

cares Jesus Christ is

Lord amen

so what do we do

now what do we do

now how do we become a witness now cuz I

said I think there's a

way well the first thing we do is we get

back to scripture and not Fox

News or Twitter or Joe

Rogan or whoever it is out

there John thought scripture is the

Royal scepter by which the King Jesus

rules his church

amen we go the way of Jesus of the

scripture not the Jesus who's made by

politicians who tell us what Jesus would

do and I've seen a lot of

that anybody

else I love that when it gets really

pical everyone calls on the name of

Jesus all of a sudden you notice that I

often Think Jesus is like please don't

bring my name to this please

just own your own stupidity

like so how do we deal with this well it

depends who you think your kingdom

is Dietrich Bon Hoffer stood up against

Hitler right he died against Hitler

listen to his words so he he might know

what he's talking

about politics are not the task of a

church as a

Christian that's almost like a big

offense today isn't it what do you think

he meant there he certainly stood up

against Hitler he certainly was not

detached from the

world why does he say that because if

you've read dietr Bon Hofer you are

children of the kingdom of

God your job is to live for the kingdom

of

God you're the ones every Sunday praying

your kingdom come your will be done and

you're not talking about the politician

hopefully we are called To Worship one
