  1. good

  2. morning Our Old Testament scripture

  3. reading comes from Deuteronomy 7

  4. 6-11 For you are a people holy to the

  5. Lord your God The Lord your God has

  6. chosen you to be a people for his

  7. treasured possession out of all the

  8. peoples who are on the face of the earth

  9. It was not because you were more in

  10. number than any other people that the

  11. Lord has set his

  12. love on you and chose you For you are

  13. the fewest of all peoples But it is

  14. because the Lord loves you and is

  15. keeping the

  16. earth keeping the oath that he swore to

  17. your fathers that the Lord has brought

  18. you out with a mighty hand and redeemed

  19. you from the house of slavery from the

  20. hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt

  21. Know therefore that the Lord your God is

  22. God the faithful God who keeps covenant

  23. and steadfast love with those who love

  24. him and keep his commandments to a

  25. thousand

  26. generations and repays to their face

  27. those who hate him by destroying

  28. them He will not be slack with one who

  29. hates him He will repay him to his face

  30. You shall therefore be careful to do the

  31. commandment and the statutes and the

  32. rules that I command you

  33. today Our New Testament

  34. reading comes from Ephesians 1:es 4 to10

  35. Even as he chose us in him before the

  36. foundations of the world that we should

  37. be holy and blameless before him In love

  38. he predestined us for adoption to

  39. himself as sons through Jesus Christ

  40. according to the purpose of his will to

  41. the praise of his glorious grace with

  42. which he has blessed us in the

  43. beloved In him we have redemption

  44. through his blood the forgiveness of our

  45. trespasses according to the riches of

  46. his grace which he lavished upon us in

  47. all wisdom and insight making known to

  48. us the mystery of his will according to

  49. his purpose which he set forth in Christ

  50. as a plan for the fullness of time to

  51. unite all things in him things in heaven

  52. and things on earth This is the word of

  53. the Lord Thanks be to

  54. God All right we're continuing in

  55. Ephesians Um and by the way I'm much

  56. happier person for this and I will take

  57. no more recommendations for Old

  58. Testament texts So

  59. um I I just happen to know a bit about

  60. Ephesians I got to study it quite

  61. intensively and um it is a wonderful

  62. book If you haven't had a chance to read

  63. it through uh Ephesians is Paul's

  64. systematic theology What I mean by that

  65. he's not writing to one particular city

  66. He's writing a general thing to the

  67. multiplicity of cities So he uses all of

  68. his theological language I'm going to

  69. tell you what you'll notice about this

  70. text if you read it seriously is I think

  71. the first 14 verses are one sentence Did

  72. you guys know that like this guy And

  73. Christina says "I run on in my sentences

  74. when she has to edit I'm just very

  75. Pauline as you see." Um but it's so

  76. dense isn't it The amount of information

  77. that's coming at you So we're going to

  78. take a little time to understand what

  79. exactly Paul's saying cuz Paul's telling

  80. us some pretty important truths if you

  81. want to be a a faithful Christian All

  82. right But before we get there we have to

  83. live in his world a bit And by the way I

  84. just Ross sent me a an article about the

  85. rise of the occult and this stuff's

  86. starting to come back But I'm going to

  87. let you guys know that what we'd call

  88. the occult or paganism as it was known

  89. then uh was a very common thing and the

  90. way they looked at the world was

  91. extremely different including the way

  92. they looked at time Have you ever seen

  93. something like

  94. this This is a pagan calendar Okay and

  95. why it's important This this was there's

  96. there's all kinds of different ones I

  97. believe this one is uh is a an ancient

  98. um uh what was I going to say Celtic one

  99. But there's all kinds and they all look

  100. relatively the same Okay Whether it's

  101. ancient Greek And what I want you to

  102. notice is there's four major uh life

  103. events here on the top Can you guys see

  104. birth up there And then you see life Do

  105. you see that And then you see down here

  106. morbid morbund I mean that means not

  107. doing so good and then death And what

  108. you'll notice in this circle it looks

  109. like the earth cuz the earth it's pagan

  110. just means the earth by the way and it's

  111. a worship of the earth and what they

  112. were worshiping were the cycles of the

  113. earth So think of birth being spring

  114. Okay life is summer Morbund is when

  115. things start to fall apart That is the

  116. fall and death is winter And that's how

  117. they celebrated And every year they

  118. would go through this cycle again and

  119. again And this is how they saw life What

  120. was interesting though is there's

  121. nothing linear in their world Everything

  122. just happens again and again There is no

  123. hope

  124. All they know is one day again somebody

  125. something new and life is going to start

  126. again And they saw their lives in this

  127. way Their lives were they had youth then

  128. they had life and then they got older

  129. you know like me and then they died And

  130. when they died that was it That was

  131. their hope And that's

  132. paganism Now imagine that that's your

  133. whole new world Now you guys are a

  134. little different Do you know what you

  135. guys think You think linearily not

  136. circularly when you think of time So

  137. when you think of time you think of time

  138. moving along time growing tents you have

  139. something called hope Their hope was

  140. just that the the grass and everything

  141. and and their uh

  142. um agriculture was good that season Okay

  143. And that's all they thought It's just

  144. going to be the same thing And there was

  145. never any hope The reason you think

  146. linear line Literally

  147. lit Maybe I'm at the Tower of Babel

  148. right now and I'm just losing my

  149. tongue But what's serious about that is

  150. we think that way because of

  151. Judeo-Christianity No other culture did

  152. No other culture does And what's funny

  153. I'm watching now as people are leaving

  154. Christianity they're now getting caught

  155. into this cycle again of just what's

  156. happening this year of your life and

  157. your hope in the spring and all of that

  158. But one thing Christianity did is it

  159. took us into the promise of something

  160. better a linear hope that freed us from

  161. this world where you just think that you

  162. go through the same thing over and over

  163. and over and then you die Do you see the

  164. difference It was a very sad existent

  165. paganism So this section in Paul when

  166. he's writing he's writing this to take

  167. on the world view of the pagans Okay

  168. Remember who this is being written to

  169. But before we do that let's

  170. pray Heavenly Father we thank you for

  171. your goodness and your graciousness We

  172. pray your Holy Spirit will fill us

  173. May you be given all praise and glory

  174. for whatever is said And may you open

  175. our eyes and our ears so that we might

  176. understand what you're saying to us and

  177. who we are in you in Jesus' name

  178. Amen We must understand the world that

  179. Paul exists in if we're going to

  180. understand Ephesians because he wasn't

  181. he's not a 21st century North American

  182. He's a first century helanized Jew and

  183. he's come out into this world and he's

  184. met Jesus Christ and unbelievably now

  185. he's out ministering to Gentiles which

  186. is making the Jews quite upset cuz they

  187. were the people of God by blood So the

  188. first issue he has is what to do with

  189. Jews and Gentiles And these churches are

  190. growing with Jews and Gentiles And if

  191. you read Acts it's all about this The

  192. main issue of the early church was Jews

  193. versus Gentiles there was the main issue

  194. And how do we put these two together All

  195. right So that's the first thing you must

  196. understand when you're reading Ephesians

  197. That's his main

  198. problem But now he's got to try and take

  199. these people who think they're the

  200. people of God by bloodline his bloodline

  201. the Jews and have them worship with

  202. these people who used to worship in

  203. three different ways And they have three

  204. issues Number one they were

  205. pagans Okay And he's dealing with a

  206. bunch of people that come from paganism

  207. who saw time as circular But the other

  208. things about them is they they worshiped

  209. Artemis and Diana These were uh fickle

  210. gods contractual gods who said to the

  211. people "If you provide meat through

  212. sacrifice or even sexual relations or

  213. something else that satisfies me I will

  214. protect you and bless you." These were

  215. not personal

  216. gods These were gods that were wrapped

  217. up into the earth cycles And all of them

  218. were wrapped up in human behavior For

  219. example Diana was known as the goddess

  220. of the hunt and the goddess of fertility

  221. Two very important things back in the

  222. ancient world Zeus the god of war All of

  223. these gods exist and this is what they

  224. lived And well Paul is talking about a

  225. very different god isn't

  226. he

  227. Secondly you've got these guys called

  228. the mystery religions These guys are

  229. floating around and they're the guys

  230. they're the guys you hate to see at

  231. church because they think they're so

  232. spiritual they can see through you Have

  233. you ever met these guys And they're so

  234. spiritual because they know a special

  235. understanding of spirituality and

  236. they've got the inside track This was

  237. the mystery religions And these guys did

  238. all kinds of crazy stuff like cut

  239. themselves and all of that other stuff

  240. One person said the mystery religions

  241. was like ancient Scientology I thought

  242. that was a very adapt These things

  243. though exist and Paul's going to have to

  244. speak to them because they're always

  245. worried about the heavenly places and

  246. they hate the earthly world Well Paul

  247. will deal with them as well And finally

  248. Paul's dealing with the cult of the

  249. emperor This is a big one This is your

  250. imperial reality that you had to be

  251. faithful to the empire above all things

  252. And when you did that you had to worship

  253. the emperor as God More Christians die

  254. because they won't do that than any

  255. other thing Did you know that he will

  256. kill you if you don't So this is the

  257. world that Paul's writing Ephesians in

  258. And he's telling these truths to the

  259. Ephesians to help them deal okay with

  260. these realities they live in

  261. So when we're listening to his letter

  262. let us listen closely and

  263. note that at times he's saying things

  264. very clearly that is debunking one of

  265. these things For example when you hear

  266. Paul say Jesus Christ Jesus the king

  267. Well who was the king in

  268. Rome You're allowed to

  269. respond

  270. Caesar You know I was warned when I was

  271. a preaching prof never ask

  272. questions but I'm trust this This looks

  273. like a bright group We're not going to

  274. get crazy answers The Caesar was king So

  275. when Jesus says Jesus Christ every time

  276. he says that he's saying "No there's a

  277. different king." What else did the

  278. Caesar call himself Lord and Savior Have

  279. you heard that title was somebody

  280. else How about son of God He called

  281. himself that Paul funny enough calls

  282. Jesus Lord and Savior son of God You

  283. think he knew what he was doing He was

  284. telling the truth of course about who

  285. Jesus is but he's also debunking So

  286. let's get into the text today and it's

  287. heavy So please I could preach each one

  288. of these lines for a week There's so

  289. much stuff but I'm not going to torture

  290. you So here we go

  291. even as he God chose us in in him before

  292. the foundation of the world Was anyone

  293. listening to my good friend Laura who

  294. did a great reading Thank you Do you

  295. remember what it said about

  296. Israel Do you remember that Were you

  297. listening You were

  298. listening It said "Israel my

  299. chosen

  300. people." And he starts with this And

  301. remember he's dealing with this Jew

  302. gentile thing and he says even as he

  303. chose us he's placed them as Jews You

  304. see that what he's saying in this

  305. section is that the God of heaven and

  306. earth has fulfilled something he planned

  307. where Israel is no longer just bloodline

  308. Jews And don't forget this is a

  309. bloodline Jud teaching this And he's

  310. saying now us the church of Gentiles and

  311. Jews who are believers in

  312. Abraham by faith are now true

  313. Israel We are the people of God We are

  314. the church We are the people of God That

  315. connects right through the Old Testament

  316. Just by saying that he is told that and

  317. he's and he's telling these people who

  318. don't get along you better get along

  319. because you're the people of God Right

  320. in that sentence even as he chose us in

  321. him That's the key in him in Jesus 36

  322. times This is all about the locust of

  323. Jesus This is a Jesus story before now

  324. He says this blows their mind He made

  325. this choice before the foundation of the

  326. world What's he doing here He's telling

  327. them about their past isn't he Well

  328. think of that pagan calendar where

  329. there's really no past is there There's

  330. just a cycle Well he's saying "No I'm

  331. going to tell you about your past You

  332. were chosen before him You are true

  333. Israel." and he planned it before the

  334. foundation of the world In other words

  335. God has had this plan to have his people

  336. before anything showed up

  337. here Isn't that something Now why is

  338. that important Because the good news of

  339. that is sometimes we think well that was

  340. just by chance Anybody else think like

  341. that sometimes One thing Paul says is it

  342. ain't by

  343. chance God is in control Sorry folks

  344. You're in a reformed church here You're

  345. going to hear this This is our

  346. wheelhouse I'm telling you right now

  347. that biblically where the worst thing

  348. churches go is to think that God is weak

  349. or is kind of surprised by things

  350. happening What if I told you he knew

  351. what Jesus was going to go through long

  352. before Adam and Eve even showed

  353. up Well that's what scripture

  354. says before the foundation of the world

  355. that we should be Now here's his purpose

  356. He did all this so we would be holy and

  357. blameless These two words have to do

  358. with a sacrificial system You know when

  359. they sacrificed the sheep and then they

  360. made the people blameless This is this

  361. word holy means different It means

  362. forgiven and

  363. washed before him in love In love Notice

  364. he predestined us Now people are going

  365. to get mad and say "Are you telling me

  366. that you're talking about some people go

  367. to heaven cuz God wants it and some

  368. people go to hell cuz God want?" No

  369. that's bad predestination theology What

  370. is it then What does it mean he

  371. predestined us He made the plan for our

  372. salvation long He predestined it long

  373. before we were

  374. around In other words here's the thing

  375. people don't like about these texts

  376. Guess what You and I aren't in charge of

  377. anything Your decision is not nearly as

  378. important as

  379. his Nobody's mad now

  380. Okay Because much of Christianity is

  381. about what have you done What have you

  382. chosen What have you done Well Paul

  383. starts off and says "Look what he did

  384. Look what he did Look what he did and

  385. you had better get your mind around that

  386. he did it and now you can have your

  387. confidence in him That's why he's

  388. telling this These aren't like the

  389. fickle gods who choose you in and out

  390. He's saying the these are the true gods

  391. This is the true God who has chosen you

  392. before the beginning of time In love he

  393. predestined us for adoption What a

  394. powerful word Ancient world adoption was

  395. something that would only happen in

  396. Greek homes

  397. And what would happen is Greeks would

  398. have their children right And oftent

  399. times they

  400. couldn't And so what did they do They

  401. adopted

  402. slaves Did you know that And once you

  403. were adopted if you got adopted into

  404. that family your life turned around

  405. because everything the parent

  406. owned you owned

  407. everything you said when you became a

  408. son in a Roman family and I went out and

  409. did business let's say and I went down

  410. to the miller I did the business I did

  411. it in my father's name I had the

  412. authority of my father And Paul uses

  413. this word to talk about what's happened

  414. to us Isn't that

  415. powerful This isn't just about getting

  416. our sins forgiven This means we become

  417. children as people who weren't children

  418. And he's definitely talking to the G

  419. Gentiles here isn't

  420. he Adoption to himself as sons This word

  421. can mean sons and daughters Okay So

  422. there's no sense of just male at all As

  423. sons and daughters through Jesus Christ

  424. he's done all of these things He has

  425. done this He's made us blameless in love

  426. All predestined us for this through

  427. Jesus Christ according to the purpose of

  428. his will In other words everything

  429. that's happened to us was always part of

  430. his plan It wasn't a

  431. mistake I remember hearing a theology a

  432. sermon one time on Adam and Eve and why

  433. Christ had to carry the cross and he

  434. said everything was going to be great

  435. for Adam and Eve and then she ate the

  436. apple and then God oh no I have to now

  437. send my son for the cross

  438. I tell you the truth When God made

  439. humanity if you are a biblical

  440. theologian you're going to have to deal

  441. with this He knew the cross was

  442. coming because he knew giving free

  443. choice to humanity was that and he had a

  444. plan from the beginning and he stuck

  445. with

  446. it You ever heard that

  447. before The cross was not sorry the fall

  448. of man was not a surprise to God He's

  449. not like what what Eve did

  450. what I can't believe it And Adam

  451. too He knew And he's good And what

  452. Paul's trying to say here to these

  453. Ephesians and he's sitting in jail

  454. telling them this is that God is

  455. faithful and

  456. good And he's made you children from the

  457. beginning of time He's planned this as

  458. sons through Christ Jesus according to

  459. the purpose of his will not our

  460. will to and this he says again and again

  461. this is all happening because to the

  462. praise and g and of his glorious grace

  463. it's always so we would praise him

  464. because he's the only one worth

  465. it He's done this for us so we'll be in

  466. right relationship and when we're in

  467. right relationship we praise

  468. The most honest thing you do my friends

  469. is when you get together and you praise

  470. God That's the most true thing you

  471. should do because he's the only one that

  472. deserves

  473. it Well and Jason Jason too

  474. But that was a

  475. joke He doesn't deserve it

  476. No with which we will be ble which he

  477. has blessed us in the beloved who's he's

  478. blessed us again he's given us remember

  479. that language I told you last week where

  480. you go on your knees and you hand

  481. everything out he's done that in Jesus

  482. Christ it's an incredible perspective so

  483. he's talked about the past what about

  484. the

  485. now and he gets deeper in him we have

  486. redemption what is this language

  487. redemption redemption is all wrapped

  488. around

  489. slavery and when a slave is redeemed he

  490. gets a mark and he is set free Now he's

  491. definitely undoubtedly thinking of

  492. Israel We are true Israel And when was

  493. Israel redeemed by

  494. God The Exodus right And yet he's

  495. continuing through here And in him we

  496. have redemption We've been set free of

  497. slavery because of Jesus Christ You're

  498. saying "What slavery have I ever been

  499. under?" I'll tell you we've all been

  500. under this slavery called sin death and

  501. the

  502. devil And at some point it had control

  503. over all of us and his cross destroyed

  504. it Isn't that good

  505. news Through his

  506. blood Through his blood he does this

  507. This has been heavily debated What does

  508. he mean Well you go back to the

  509. sacrificial system He's the blood of the

  510. lamb He's the true lamb He's the clean

  511. And he pays for our sins And he destroys

  512. Satan it says on the cross Something

  513. through the blood set us free from being

  514. bound to destruction for eternity

  515. we were

  516. redeemed But he doesn't stop there The

  517. forgiveness of our trespasses This is an

  518. interesting way to say it He doesn't say

  519. forgiveness of sins here He uses a

  520. different word Sins can mean missed the

  521. mark Okay That just means you're trying

  522. to do something you didn't get it right

  523. so you missed the mark Trespass is much

  524. worse Trespass is not oh I just missed

  525. the mark I didn't act it right Trespass

  526. says I'm going to see the sign that says

  527. don't do this and knowing in my head I

  528. shouldn't I'm trespassing and I'm going

  529. to go do

  530. it He forgives you of the things that

  531. you know you should not do and you do

  532. Isn't that

  533. powerful It isn't just whoop I made a

  534. mistake cuz I'm human and I missed the

  535. mark it He I forgive you the things you

  536. know you did the things you knew was

  537. wrong the way you did things and I have

  538. forgiven you That powerful stuff He's

  539. just throwing stuff at us isn't he

  540. According to the riches of his grace

  541. he's got so much grace Do you know what

  542. it says That his grace cannot be

  543. overcome by your

  544. sin Isn't that something

  545. How many people walk in this life as

  546. Christians and say "Oh I blew it again I

  547. guess he's not for me." His graces

  548. overwhelm your

  549. sin He has forgiven you those trespasses

  550. when you mess up Amen We should be

  551. praising God right now because guess

  552. what I know a secret about you You guys

  553. sin I know cuz I'm one of

  554. you Well need press Pentecostals in here

  555. man Wow Okay

  556. which he lavished upon us Listen to that

  557. word He lavished I love this He lavished

  558. this grace upon us I so tired of people

  559. with this angry God who just I guess I

  560. have to forgive you because you believe

  561. in me

  562. Darn He lavishes grace upon us That

  563. incredible in all wisdom and

  564. insight Unlike the wisdom and insight of

  565. the of the mystery religions this is

  566. God's only wisdom and insight Making

  567. known to us the mystery This word

  568. mystery doesn't mean like a murder

  569. mystery It means something that wasn't

  570. known before He made known to us what

  571. was unknown before in Israel According

  572. to his purpose which was the forgiveness

  573. of sin the pouring of

  574. grace the adoption of children which he

  575. has set forth in Christ So today what

  576. does he say Adoption forgiveness just do

  577. before predestination chosen And then

  578. what does he do He goes to the

  579. future because he's creating a linear

  580. way of thinking in a world that thinks

  581. circularly And he ends with the future

  582. And it's beautiful And he has a plan for

  583. the fullness of time This is what's

  584. going to happen We're not there yet to

  585. unite all things in

  586. him things in heaven and things on

  587. earth Did you guys know that that is our

  588. eternal

  589. hope That one day God will take all

  590. things in heaven and earth according to

  591. Paul and unite them The word unite means

  592. knit them

  593. together on heaven and earth

  594. So when someone tells me "Oh Betty died

  595. She's in a better place floating in the

  596. clouds." I

  597. [Music]

  598. go "Because that is not our hope that

  599. she might be floating in the clouds

  600. someday My hope is the resurrection."

  601. And one day we live with the truth that

  602. one day God is going to take heaven and

  603. earth these two dimensions and put them

  604. together And we will be truly human

  605. eternal beings without sin forever

  606. and we will be there because he's

  607. forgiven us He's adopted us He's taken

  608. us in And it was always part of his plan

  609. Do you see this section

  610. now This is the best news section I

  611. can't preach to you a better news

  612. section And if you're not touched by

  613. this section I'm not going to be able to

  614. find you a better one because there is

  615. no warnings in this is there There is

  616. just truth about what's happened to

  617. you So what are those truths again

  618. The past your

  619. past you were

  620. chosen You were

  621. chosen Well hold on Emry I know me I'm

  622. not one worthy of being chosen Have you

  623. read Jesus very much He doesn't choose

  624. the worthy

  625. ones does

  626. he And yet you were chosen to be part of

  627. his church in

  628. Christ That's incredible That should put

  629. your head at bed Even when you've had

  630. your worst day that should put your head

  631. on your pillow and help you sleep like a

  632. baby because God chose

  633. you He chose this

  634. church He's chosen us in

  635. Christ Number two he predestined us This

  636. was all part of a plan Plan to be his

  637. church his people his true Israel from

  638. day

  639. one and all of this before the

  640. foundation of the world This is not a

  641. fickle God So if he's not a fickle God

  642. why are we worried that he might leave

  643. us when he chose us Now I understand

  644. this is hard to get our mind around

  645. because we often have trouble planning a

  646. week

  647. ahead but he has planned this forever

  648. John Calvin said "Although we cannot

  649. conceive either by argument or reason

  650. how God has elected us before the

  651. creation of this world yet we know it by

  652. his declaring it to us and expering

  653. itself vouches for us sufficiently when

  654. we are enlightened in the

  655. faith." I'm giving you an invitation

  656. right now in this section alone if you

  657. take nothing else to walk out of here

  658. and say "I have been

  659. chosen." to walk out of here and stop

  660. talking to yourself as if everything's

  661. chaos behind you There is a plan for

  662. you and it's in him and you're here for

  663. a

  664. reason But the other side of this is I'm

  665. going to tell you I don't care how many

  666. of you thought you did an incredible

  667. thing and how lucky God's had to have

  668. you because you chose him You

  669. didn't I'm going to tell you something

  670. that is really offensive to some

  671. evangelicals You were saved because of

  672. what he did not what you

  673. did And nowhere does it say

  674. otherwise Carl Bart was asked on what

  675. date he was saved and he said 33 AD

  676. Goltha The best answer anyone gave I

  677. thought the problem in evangelical is we

  678. tell people this the gospel and they say

  679. "Do you get it?" And then we say "Oh you

  680. were saved that day You were not saved

  681. that day You were saved when Jesus

  682. Christ died on his cross Oh you awoke to

  683. it for sure." And I'll tell you what

  684. else that means is we don't have to hang

  685. on to it because it was never ours to

  686. begin

  687. with I once heard people who you know

  688. have you ever heard the date the debate

  689. are you saved Are you always saved Or

  690. could you lose your salvation Anybody

  691. heard that Raise your hands Okay see

  692. some of you I've always found the people

  693. who say you can lose your salvation and

  694. they always say because they always say

  695. um you know once saved always saved Have

  696. you ever heard

  697. that But what's funny is the other side

  698. I've I've noticed that it's once saved

  699. always

  700. anxious There's some truth to that

  701. because it's located in yourself And if

  702. you're fickle and the Bible says we are

  703. we're going to have bad days which we

  704. would choose otherwise But he chose us

  705. My beautiful teaching

  706. prof said this about Paul Paul's

  707. salvation is not grounded in himself

  708. Paul's salvation and all that salvation

  709. means is grounded in the free sovereign

  710. grace's choice of the livinging

  711. God That's good news folks because

  712. you're sitting here and saved because he

  713. chose

  714. you You believe because he chose you You

  715. said yes to his yes And now all you have

  716. to do is keep your faith on the one

  717. that's already chosen you not on you

  718. whether you can keep it

  719. up which I think is

  720. idolatry And in the

  721. present here's your present It wasn't

  722. written to you but it was written for

  723. you So I want you to believe these

  724. things because these are truths about

  725. you right now sitting here Okay You have

  726. adoption redemption forgiveness and

  727. grace right now But Emry I had a bad day

  728. yesterday and I sinned You have adoption

  729. redemption forgiveness and

  730. grace That's what you have every day you

  731. wake up Every day as Carl Bart says that

  732. a man looks backwards he's staring at

  733. the forgiveness of

  734. sins A Christian

  735. Jonathan Edwards Jesus Christ is both

  736. the only price and sacrifice by which

  737. eternal redemption is attained by home

  738. for by believers We are redeemed We are

  739. no longer slaves And I'm telling you

  740. what because we're free we will not be

  741. bound to the hell or whatever else you

  742. want to call it because he's freed us

  743. already in the cross And he did it by

  744. grace alone Not cuz he thought we were

  745. worth it Cuz we weren't worth it Not

  746. because he said "Well that person over

  747. there is rather likable Oh look at Ross

  748. He's the greatest thing ever." He did

  749. not say that And I know Ross can believe

  750. this He said "I love Ross And I am going

  751. to enlighten him." Praise the Lord And I

  752. have no choice of Ross He is sitting

  753. here right now and he has grown in

  754. Christ Praise the Lord And he is

  755. redeemed Not only that but he has

  756. forgiven your sins I love this Charles H

  757. Spurgeon This is truth You say this to

  758. yourself Your sins are

  759. forgiven It is true that Jesus saves his

  760. people from their sins Earth knows it

  761. Hell howls at it And heaven chants it

  762. Time has seen it and eternity shall

  763. reveal it You are forgiven from your

  764. sins because our Lord went on that

  765. cross And when he said it was finished

  766. he didn't mean "Oh hey guys bring it up

  767. some more

  768. He said "It was finished." Well hold on

  769. Emry I've done bad things Yeah he says

  770. "Confess it But you're

  771. forgiven We should be the happiest

  772. people in the world but because we don't

  773. believe this stuff we look like we're

  774. sucking lemons when we leave

  775. churches."

  776. No Oh you haven't been to some of the

  777. churches I

  778. have We should be just blown away every

  779. time that this God has forgiven us and

  780. has chosen us and has done all these

  781. things And not only that he's forgiven

  782. our

  783. sins He's justified us But you know what

  784. That's not even the greatest part You

  785. know what the greatest part

  786. is That's pretty good stuff isn't it But

  787. you know what the greatest part is

  788. You're

  789. adopted You've been adopted into a

  790. family

  791. You are in God's

  792. family You're his

  793. child

  794. Everything that a child gets you

  795. get That's way better than

  796. justification That's even better than

  797. forgiveness of sins That is so much

  798. better because as my old friend Ji

  799. Packer says I know you can't read this

  800. but justification is a forensic

  801. idea conceived in terms of law and

  802. viewing God as

  803. judge Whereas adoption is a family idea

  804. conceived in terms of love and viewing

  805. God as his as father In adoption God

  806. takes us into his family and fellowship

  807. and establishes us as his children and

  808. heirs Closeness affection and generosity

  809. are all at the heart of the

  810. relationships To be right with God the

  811. judge is the great thing But to be loved

  812. and cared for by God is by far the

  813. greatest A lot of people say "Well I'm

  814. forgiven in Christ." You are But they

  815. miss the better part You are children

  816. adopted into his family for relationship

  817. and

  818. love That is far

  819. greater That

  820. amazing So when you're lying in bed and

  821. that awful voice of the accuser comes to

  822. you and says "You're not

  823. worthy." Anybody else been

  824. there I

  825. have Remind yourself This is why Paul

  826. gave us

  827. this You're an adopted child of

  828. God And by the way next time you hear

  829. that voice that says you're not worthy

  830. you go "No I'm not but he is and I'm in

  831. him." And then there's the

  832. future All unite revealed all unite all

  833. things on heaven and earth This is what

  834. we get to look forward to

  835. We have all of that stuff now given to

  836. us We have the past saying it was always

  837. part of his plan And the greatest news

  838. is we have a

  839. hope We don't just have a vague hope A

  840. vague hope that they go somewhere nice A

  841. vague hope of this world that maybe I

  842. was a good enough person because they

  843. weren't by the

  844. way But a real hope because we have an

  845. empty tomb right

  846. And in Jesus Christ's body heaven and

  847. earth came together right And he's an

  848. eternal being physical isn't

  849. he And what does he say at the end He's

  850. going to take everything and make it

  851. right now I don't know you guys but I

  852. guarantee you guys have lost loved ones

  853. Anyone out here lost loved ones Of

  854. course And what this text and they lost

  855. him in Ephesians says is by the way not

  856. only are we sealed today not only we

  857. were chosen but guess what it's all

  858. going to be set

  859. right and these two worlds are going to

  860. come together on that day that is the

  861. good

  862. news John Sto doesn't get better than

  863. him but all things normally means the

  864. universe which Christ created and

  865. sustains So Paul seems to be referring

  866. again to that cosmic renewal that

  867. regeneration of the universe that

  868. liberation of the growing groaning

  869. creation of which he's already written

  870. in Romans God's plan is that all things

  871. which were created through Christ and

  872. for Christ and which hold together in

  873. Christ will finally be united under

  874. Christ by being subject to his headship

  875. For the New Testament declares him to be

  876. the heir of all

  877. things My friends your hope in the

  878. future is not just that somebody some

  879. someday you'll die One day this world

  880. which is so full of evil and so sick

  881. will be destroy will be

  882. transformed and all things will be right

  883. made right And can you imagine on that

  884. day Can you imagine on that day these

  885. people who for no other reason by God's

  886. grace who were chosen who were forgiven

  887. who were adopted and then they on that

  888. day come into that new world and see the

  889. people like

  890. them for the first time in

  891. generations What will that be like

  892. You're invited to

  893. speculate You should be the most hopeful

  894. people in the world No matter how many

  895. tell you that if you didn't vote right

  896. the whole world's going to blow up

  897. No matter how tell you that

  898. the sun's going to blow us up I don't

  899. know whatever they're talking right now

  900. about global warming I don't even see

  901. that shows how much I know about global

  902. warming We have this

  903. hope and all of this is because we're in

  904. him See this is where the praise comes

  905. in

  906. All of this stuff and I just gave you

  907. all the good news towards us is all

  908. because he's so

  909. good That's why it says in Christ in him

  910. 36 times because he's the one worth

  911. praising and worshiping When we come in

  912. here to do praise and worship when

  913. Jason's leading praise and worship or

  914. Cat or Laura or Christina or whoever

  915. else they're not doing that to entertain

  916. us They're doing that so that we all can

  917. sing songs about this amazing

  918. truth and who he

  919. is And we should sing with all our

  920. hearts All of this happened because of

  921. what he

  922. did Mman said "In the cross of Christ

  923. God is taking man dead

  924. seriously so that he may open up for him

  925. the happy freedom of Easter." the

  926. resurrection God takes upon himself the

  927. pain of negation and the god-forsakeness

  928. of judgment to reconcile himself with

  929. his enemies and to give godless

  930. fellowship the godless fellowship with

  931. himself Guess who he's talking about

  932. right there You and

  933. me That's what the cross is

  934. about He did the cross And I can tell

  935. you you can trust him because he didn't

  936. finish

  937. Sorry he did

  938. finish and now we live in faith in

  939. that So now we got the

  940. question so what Emry these are all good

  941. things How do I live Well I tell you

  942. what if you take this seriously you

  943. can't help but love this

  944. God You can't help but take serious this

  945. God And you're not going to be able to

  946. if you take this seriously If you really

  947. let this come into your heart do

  948. anything but worship

  949. him Dietrich Bonhaofer in talking about

  950. what it should be to be human said "The

  951. justification of my life before God is

  952. to live because of and towards the

  953. living dying and rising of Jesus

  954. Christ." That's why he says "Abandon

  955. your life and follow me." You know why

  956. Because he's worth it

  957. He asks you to do that because he's the

  958. only one worth

  959. following So what are we going to

  960. do We don't live in a world where time

  961. is circular We live in a world of time

  962. is

  963. meaningless We live in a world where

  964. people don't believe in God and think

  965. that time is just going to disappear and

  966. is absolute meaningless And they live

  967. their lives like it's true don't they

  968. Well you've just been told that time

  969. matters The past you were called The

  970. present you're

  971. forgiven redeemed and

  972. adopted And the future you're part of

  973. when he puts all things together

  974. including those you've lost

  975. You should be a light in this world that

  976. has lost any

  977. hope and live like this is true And I

  978. tell you what people want

  979. truth They want this They long for this

  980. hope If you believe

  981. this people will

  982. notice and they will talk to you and you

  983. might find one day that they finally say

  984. yes to this God who has chosen them

  985. They'll finally say yes to this God who

  986. is willing to forgive them and adopt

  987. them and finally say yes to the God

  988. who's got everything in heaven and earth

  989. for them for

  990. eternity I guess it's your choice if you

  991. want to believe

  992. it Let's pray

  993. Heavenly Father this is an incredible

  994. truth that you gave us all of that on

  995. the

  996. cross It's unbelievable that you chose

  997. us to be your people before the

  998. foundation of the world that you've

  999. always had this as your plan You've

  1000. always planned relationship

  1001. It's unbelievable that

  1002. today we are

  1003. forgiven that we are

1004. redeemed that we are adopted

1005. children Oh and what a hope you've given

1006. us that you will return and set all

1007. things new all things on heaven and

  1008. earth knit

  1009. together

1010. Help us believe this in a world that

1011. doesn't Help us put our praise into you

1012. because Lord Jesus you're the only one

  1013. that's worthy of the

  1014. praise of

1015. this And every Sunday we come may we

1016. remind ourselves why we praise and

1017. worship you Because you are this God and

  1018. you deserve

  1019. it in Jesus

  1020. name Amen
