  1. The Old Testament reading this morning

  2. is from Genesis 1:es 1-5.

  3. In the beginning, God created the

  4. heavens and the earth.

  5. The earth was without form and void, and

  6. darkness

  7. was over the face of the deep.

  8. And the spirit of God was hovering over

  9. the face of the waters.

  10. And God said, "Let there be light." And

  11. there was light. And God saw that the

  12. light was good. And God separated the

  13. light from the darkness. God called the

  14. light day and the darkness he called

  15. light. And there was evening and there

  16. was morning, the first day.

  17. The New Testament reading is from the

  18. Gospel of John, chapter 1, verses 1-5.

    John 1:1–5

  19. In the beginning

  20. was the word and the word was with God

  21. and the word was God.

  22. He was in the beginning with God.

  23. All things were made through him and

  24. without him was not anything made that

  25. was made.

  26. In him was life, and the life was the

  27. light of men. The light shines in the

  28. darkness, and the darkness has not

  29. overcome it. This is the word of the

  30. Lord.

  31. >> Thanks be to God.

  32. >> All right, here we go. John's Gospel. It

  33. is going to be enjoyable. I really

  34. believe you'll enjoy it. There's two

  35. types of texts I don't like to preach,

  36. and John is one of them. The first one I

  37. don't like to preach because um nobody

  38. knows what it means and then they all

  39. kind of have their own ideas is a book

  40. like Revelation

  41. where everybody thinks they know what it

  42. means until you do the study on it and

  43. you realize there's a whole genre there

  44. that you've got to learn and those are

  45. tough because you have to spend a whole

  46. lot of time working to get it

  47. understood. That's the first type. The

  48. second type is the hardest

  49. texts that people think they already

  50. understand because they've heard it so

  51. many times, but they don't always

  52. understand them because then you're

  53. preaching against something that

  54. somebody's held to very dearly. Now, I'm

  55. going to tell you that the theology of

  56. John isn't going to change, but I'm

  57. hoping by the end of John, you're going

  58. to see that this book is an incredible

  59. book. Number one, when you take firstear

  60. Greek, it is. Do you remember the books

  61. Dick and Jane? Do you Did you guys take

  62. English with Dick and Jane? Yeah. Okay.

  63. I'm seeing the older folks. So, the

  64. young folks had some

  65. some hip names like I don't know.

  66. I don't even know what a hip name is

  67. now.

  68. Dick and Jane was a book that you go

  69. through. Dick and Jane went to the

  70. woods, right? Dick and Jane got a bucket

  71. of water. Dick and Jane. And you repeat

  72. it. John's gospel is the Greek Dick and

  73. Jane. Okay? It repeats itself again and

  74. again and again. And so you learn it

  75. when you first start out. So when I was

  76. a first year Greek student, this is what

  77. I learned. But here's the craziest thing

  78. about this amazing book. It is one of

  79. the deepest books that's going to tell

  80. us amazing stuff

  81. if we want to go in it. So in other

  82. words, a 5-year-old can swim in it and

  83. an elephant can swim in it deeper on. It

  84. can handle it all. All right.

  85. So, we live in a different culture now,

  86. don't we? The world has changed. The

  87. world's changed in my 25 years of

  88. ministry. People think different. And

  89. now there's a whole movement. Have you

  90. heard of this? The deconstruction of the

  91. Christian faith. Put your hand up if

  92. you've heard of that. So, this is a

  93. movement that has come out in the last

  94. uh 30 years, maybe 20 years. And the

  95. basically the idea is I have been under

  96. the teaching. I've been a Christian.

  97. I've been a practicing Christian. And

  98. now I am not comfortable with

  99. Christianity. The cultures made me

  100. uncomfortable with Christianity. So now

  101. I must deconstruct my faith by going

  102. through and re-examining all of these

  103. theological ideas.

  104. I did use AI. You're going to be proud

  105. of me. Okay. This is my first AI. And I

  106. like using AI because when if it's

  107. wrong, I can blame AI. Right. Right. You

  108. don't blame my head anymore. It's its

  109. head. This is how he described

  110. deconstructing theology. Christianity

  111. says, "Deconstructing Christianity is a

  112. personal, often painful process of

  113. critically examining and questioning

  114. traditional beliefs, doctrines, and

  115. practices from one's religious

  116. upbringing, frequently stemming from

  117. evangelicalism, to find a more authentic

  118. faith or to move away from it entirely."

  119. That's the principle of what they say

  120. they're doing.

  121. Now, I have some suspicions of this

  122. movement, but I recently heard a podcast

  123. say Christianity is going to fall

  124. because everyone's deconstructing

  125. h

  126. the funny thing is I'll get into

  127. deconstructing theology in a bit, but

  128. here's the point.

  129. Is sit a threat?

  130. Is it really

  131. is our Christianity falling apart? Is it

  132. deconstructing before our eyes?

  133. Well, I have good news. No. And John's

  134. gospel is a wonderful gospel to bring us

  135. back on track, bring us back to what

  136. scriptures motivated for and hopefully

  137. free some of these people who are

  138. feeling angst with the gospel. Let's

  139. pray.

  140. Heavenly Father, we thank you for your

  141. living word. We thank you for John's

  142. gospel. We pray it will speak to us and

  143. that we will gain life through it. Amen.

  144. The wonderful thing about John's gospel

  145. you don't get anywhere else or very

  146. often is he actually tells you the

  147. purpose he writes it. That makes a

  148. preacher's job way easier because if you

  149. know the purpose of the writing, then

  150. you can direct your sermon or your

  151. teaching in the right direction. And

  152. here's what he said. Now Jesus did many

  153. other signs in the presence of the

  154. disciples which are not written in this

  155. book. But these are written so that you

  156. listen to these words. But these were

  157. written so that and I don't want to say

  158. you because we're going to take it as an

  159. individual. It's in the third person.

  160. y'all.

  161. So that y'all

  162. may believe that Jesus is the Christ,

  163. the son of God, and that by believing

  164. y'all may have Zoe. This word's going to

  165. come up. Life is going to jump. Zoe

  166. means abundant life. It doesn't mean

  167. just life as you live and breathe. It

  168. means a life that is exploding,

  169. vibrant, that you may have life,

  170. abundant life in his name. So his

  171. purpose is for you to believe that Jesus

  172. is the king, the son of God, and that

  173. you that y'all may have this life. It's

  174. a very positive gospel.

  175. His purpose for writing this whole thing

  176. is that it's for you

  177. because this God is for you. So every

  178. week we will ask ourselves, how did this

  179. text fulfill John's practice?

  180. And the first one of course is the one

  181. you guys have heard a million times

  182. probably in the beginning. Now why does

  183. he start with in the beginning? I gave

  184. you a hint with what Ross Wait read as

  185. our Old Testament text. What was that

  186. again?

  187. >> Genesis. How does Genesis start?

  188. So, what is he doing? Is he's saying,

  189. "I'm going to use the Genesis story as a

  190. template for my gospel."

  191. All of the gospels, all of Paul's

  192. letters, it's the first part that's the

  193. most important because they're telling

  194. you how to read and what to look for. So

  195. when you get to John's gospel, he uses

  196. as his map

  197. this this is how you look at it. This is

  198. how you look at the text. Now he does

  199. some things that are he he doesn't use

  200. it perfectly onetoone. It's a different

  201. genre frankly than the original. But

  202. what he's going to do is he's going to

  203. say, "I'm going to show you that the God

  204. of creation, the one in the first

  205. Genesis, is the very one that came in

  206. Bethlehem that day." Okay, that's what

  207. he's going to do. And he's going to note

  208. that we must have a much higher view

  209. thus of Jesus. Now if you go into

  210. um the other gospels, they start at ma

  211. they start with uh Moses, they start

  212. with David, they start with the

  213. prophets, they start with uh the kings,

  214. they start with everything, but not

  215. John. He's going back to before

  216. creation. Do you see that? So what

  217. perspective does he want you to have?

  218. He's inviting you to have a view of God

  219. in Jesus as massive.

  220. Okay? He wants you to come. He's

  221. starting right away and saying, you know

  222. who this Jesus is? He's it.

  223. He was in the beginning. In the

  224. beginning was the word. Here is a

  225. beautiful word that we get

  226. misunderstood. The word in Greek is

  227. logos and it has spiritual meanings, but

  228. it's the Hebrew, which this was a Jewish

  229. writer. So he was translating his word

  230. word into Greek and his word was dbar.

  231. And so the word dbar was always attached

  232. to God. They couldn't have God because

  233. remember in the Old Testament human

  234. beings couldn't interact with God or

  235. they die. Do you remember that? So they

  236. had to have these means in which God

  237. could have imminent connection with his

  238. people. And there were three. There were

  239. the spirit of God. There were the angels

  240. of God. And then there was the word of

  241. God. Okay? And when the word of God

  242. came, it was God but his word. And it

  243. always announced three things.

  244. Salvation,

  245. revelation,

  246. creation.

  247. So this word is the word that's always

  248. connected with creation. So we must out

  249. now realize that this is going to be all

  250. about creation and new creation which

  251. means it's going to be bigger than

  252. individual us.

  253. Remember that part where he says God so

  254. loved the do you remember that cosmos is

  255. the word.

  256. Do you know what cosmos means?

  257. Everything.

  258. He doesn't say God so loved human

  259. beings.

  260. So we have a God that is not a tribal

  261. God. He is the God of everything.

  262. In the beginning was this word and this

  263. word already has tons of meaning for

  264. those hearers. This is the revelatory

  265. entity. This is the the salvation

  266. entity. This is the creation entity. And

  267. then he goes on and he goes, "And the

  268. word was with God."

  269. Fascinating use of a verb here. The word

  270. with here, the verb, he was with God,

  271. is a verb that only has an intimacy

  272. component.

  273. So,

  274. it's a verb. I might say to you, Emry,

  275. what did you do last night? I was

  276. watching TV with an

  277. an intimate kind of thing. Now, I might

  278. be asked, what were you doing today? And

  279. I say I was with some guy at the bus

  280. stop. That's a different one.

  281. The with here is that the word is in

  282. right away deep relationship with God.

  283. You see that it starts off with love

  284. with intimacy and the word was with God

  285. and the word was God. Now this gets a

  286. lot of people confused.

  287. So, and you can see the beginning of the

  288. trinity here, can't you? The word was

  289. with God and the word was God. How can

  290. you be with if you are? And that's

  291. driven the Jehovah Witnesses quite nuts

  292. and many others like them. And their

  293. exclamation is that we don't understand

  294. it right because the word God here

  295. doesn't have a article in front of it.

  296. So, in the in other words, in the Greek,

  297. it says, "And the word was God." Not a

  298. god, not the god. If he meant that Jesus

  299. was the god, he should have put in the

  300. god. The Jehovah witnesses tell me or a

  301. god,

  302. but he couldn't.

  303. And there's a reason for that. If he

  304. made him the god, he couldn't be a

  305. trinitarian god. If he is the god, the

  306. word, then there can't be more persons

  307. than one. Do you see that?

  308. But more importantly in the article is

  309. when you don't have an article, it means

  310. you're putting an exclamation mark at

  311. the end of the sentence.

  312. Okay? And what that means is why this is

  313. interesting is here's how John would

  314. have read this. In the beginning was the

  315. word and the word was with God and the

  316. word was God. Do you see

  317. he's shocked that the word was God? Can

  318. you believe this word was the actual God

  319. because no one expected it? We're so

  320. used to the idea of Jesus being divine,

  321. being the God. They were shocked that

  322. this word was God.

  323. And he was in the beginning with God.

  324. You see, he does that twice. This with

  325. when Jews do things twice, they're ex

  326. they want you to take it very serious.

  327. Remember when Pet Jesus says, "Truly,

  328. truly, I say unto you." You remember

  329. that? Whenever you see things twice,

  330. they don't have exclamation marks. They

  331. don't have punctuation. That's how they

  332. do it. So, right after that, he goes,

  333. "He was in the beginning with God." This

  334. is a this word is in deep intimacy

  335. with God and he's God. Okay? So, already

  336. these Jews and you got to remember they

  337. weren't expecting this. You can imagine

  338. John writing this just be blown away

  339. about this revelation about who God is.

  340. Then he gets into it. Now in the ancient

  341. world, you have to understand he's

  342. writing to a plethora of different

  343. views. Okay? Some people there were gods

  344. that made the moon. There were gods that

  345. made the stars. There were gods that

  346. made the oceans. You've heard all of

  347. this. The lower gods, the bigger gods,

  348. the but they all were connected to

  349. making something, right? Mars was the

  350. made the the moon the the the planet

  351. Mars.

  352. What does he say in light of that?

  353. All things were made through him

  354. and without him was not anything made

  355. that was made. Notice he said it twice.

  356. His point here for the listener and for

  357. the Jesus is there is nothing on the

  358. heavens or the earth, nothing in the

  359. seen realm or the unseen realm that

  360. Jesus Christ pre-incarnate word did not

  361. create.

  362. This is who we are dealing with.

  363. So when Jesus says why are you worrying?

  364. It's because he's saying if I've made

  365. everything

  366. and I'm in control of everything

  367. then nothing is in control besides me or

  368. what I let it. Do you see that

  369. all things were made through him and

  370. without him was not one thing made that

  371. was made in him. Now we we're starting

  372. at this in this word was Zoey

  373. was abundant life. In the original

  374. creation story when God Yahweh breathes

  375. upon man he breathes psyche into him. He

  376. breathes the natural life that we all

  377. get at birth. This birth whatever this

  378. life is Jesus is talking about is a

  379. abundant life that's going to be

  380. correlated with resurrection life.

  381. In other words, Christians should have

  382. life in them,

  383. right? Presbyterians.

  384. How many are asleep already?

  385. In him was life. Mhm.

  386. And the life was the light of men. Now

  387. you're going to start seeing life and

  388. dark light and darkness and death always

  389. because what is the Genesis account?

  390. Light and darkness. Now in that case the

  391. darkness hovers over the deep. God comes

  392. and commands it to be done and then dark

  393. and night and it gets called good and

  394. that's how he separates it. In this case

  395. darkness

  396. is the representation of all malevolent

  397. forces both within you and outside.

  398. everything that turns away from God. In

  399. him was life and life was the light of

  400. men. The light shines in the darkness

  401. and then the good news is going to come.

  402. Notice he doesn't deny darkness

  403. but he says the light that darkness

  404. cannot it's not has not cannot overcome

  405. it.

  406. And right there in those five verses, we

  407. find out who God is, who this one is we

  408. worship, who made everything, and is in

  409. control of everything. Tonight, I give

  410. you a homework assignment. Go out and

  411. stare at the stars and think Jesus

  412. Christ is in control of that.

  413. So maybe you won't worry about your test

  414. paper or whether your Wi-Fi goes down.

  415. I don't know what we worry about

  416. anymore.

  417. Maybe we can have hope because the

  418. darkness can't overcome it.

  419. What a powerful first five verses. I'm

  420. telling you, it is laid out for us. The

  421. greatness of Jesus Christ.

  422. Our problem, I would say, in the church

  423. is our Jesus is too small.

  424. I want to tell you that, you know, it's

  425. the old um kumbaya Jesus. Do you know

  426. what I'm talking about? Kumbaya, my

  427. lord. Kumbaya.

  428. Are we all happy? Are we happy? Oh,

  429. that's good. I'm happy, too. Cuz little

  430. Jesus is going to come in. He's going to

  431. sit beside us and go, "I love you.

  432. You're my sheep." Okay.

  433. That is not the God of John.

  434. It isn't. John's God is going to come in

  435. and he's going to be booming stuff are

  436. happening and he is exploding and he's

  437. turning this he's turning water into

  438. wine. Not a lot of

  439. he turned water into wine. You never

  440. hear that. You never hear songs about

  441. that.

  442. He's going to do things that are

  443. unbelievable. He's going to raise the

  444. dead. He's going to change stop storms.

  445. He's going to come into the temple and

  446. say, "Get out the everybody out of the

  447. pool."

  448. Our Jesus is just too functionally small

  449. and he's too individualistic.

  450. How many times do people say, "Oh, me

  451. and Jesus.

  452. I'm glad you have Jesus, but guess what?

  453. He's way bigger than just you.

  454. He's doing something so profound in this

  455. world." And we want to get that in

  456. John's gospel that this God is bigger

  457. than even Trump.

  458. I know you're shocked

  459. or whoever else is big right now.

  460. Yeah.

  461. Our Jesus is too small because he chose

  462. to come and be a slave. But do not ever

  463. think that that is it. And because our

  464. Jesus is the creator of the heavens and

  465. earth, guess who wins in the end? End

  466. revelation. Who wins?

  467. >> Jesus.

  468. >> Amen.

  469. I'm preaching now, brother.

  470. That first verse is what Barrett's

  471. speaking of here. He says John intends

  472. that the whole of his gospel be read in

  473. the light of this verse. The deeds and

  474. words of Jesus are the deeds and words

  475. of God.

  476. If this be not true, this book is

  477. blasphemous.

  478. I like John's gospel. People give it to

  479. new believers and they're like, "Oh,

  480. that'll be nice and soft." Have you read

  481. John's gospel? It's crazy power.

  482. Crazy stuff. And you're going to realize

  483. how amazing it is. And this is the heart

  484. of God, you guys. The one who made

  485. everything. Let us allow ourselves to

  486. see Jesus bigger than little meek and

  487. mild Jesus. Little Mr. Rogers,

  488. if you remember that guy.

  489. Yeah, he's been dead for I got to find

  490. new references.

  491. And here's the problem. When we get into

  492. our deconstruction, they're very sure

  493. that they're going to be a threat to

  494. Christianity. I assure they're not

  495. deconstructing

  496. into darkness. That's what happens. You

  497. see, you you come in and you feel

  498. uncomfortable because your cultural

  499. norms make you uncomfortable with

  500. Christianity. Well, we live in a world

  501. where the sexual ethics right now are in

  502. conflict with the culture with Christian

  503. ethics, right? And that's and we are I

  504. don't know if you've noticed this, we

  505. have been worshiping sexuality like a

  506. god for years since the 60s. And what's

  507. happened is people have been told that

  508. if you don't accept the cultural gods

  509. view of sexuality or gender or any of

  510. these other things, you are going to uh

  511. you are I don't know whether they call

  512. you fascist or or close-minded that

  513. doesn't matter. And so people come into

  514. their churches and maybe they know

  515. somebody who struggles in that area and

  516. they say well no this couldn't be right.

  517. I feel uncomfortable. I'm going to

  518. deconstruct my faith. And that's what

  519. happens. They have an issue beforehand,

  520. a Jesus of their culture sat in their

  521. back pocket, and then they begin to

  522. deconstruct. Now, I had a chance to sit

  523. down and chat on a on a little podcast

  524. with a lady about deconstruction. And I

  525. realized she was very into it. About 10

  526. minutes in, she didn't have a clue what

  527. the Bible really said.

  528. She understood the straw man of

  529. fundamentalism.

  530. She did not know. And what broke my

  531. heart is I asked her after what has she

  532. been done? Like where has this led her

  533. to? And she said, "I'm lonely and I

  534. don't have my church because I can't go

  535. back because I am free theologically."

  536. But what she made the greatest mistake

  537. is she thought that her reason could

  538. somehow

  539. be better than God's revelation.

  540. She made her reason God. But her reason

  541. betrayed her because her reason was just

  542. what the culture had told her. I wasn't

  543. angry. I was saddened because here's

  544. what I know. This God has given us this

  545. so we might believe and have life. If

  546. you have decided to search your life for

  547. nonbelief and it leads to what?

  548. Darkness and death.

  549. >> Yeah.

  550. Lesley Noob again, I mean, he's he I

  551. love the way he talks and and he's got a

  552. great commentary on this on on John's

  553. gospel. He says, "The darkness cannot be

  554. as such a subject for research. It is

  555. simply darkness. It is what confronts

  556. one who turns away from the true source

  557. of his being. Tries to find its meaning

  558. elsewhere and thereby plunges into

  559. meaninglessness."

  560. And I've seen that again

  561. and again.

  562. I've seen it when people stop coming to

  563. church.

  564. I'm going to tell you something. I

  565. believe in church more than I ever used

  566. to because as 25 years of a minister,

  567. how many people I'm just going to go,

  568. not come, not come. You know, their

  569. faith will eventually go.

  570. I've seen it again and again.

  571. Now they say, these people, these

  572. deconstructors, that they have liberated

  573. themselves and now have found this new

  574. way and it's going to destroy

  575. Christianity. And you know what? I

  576. laugh.

  577. Voltater, the great 19th century

  578. atheist, told us that he would himself

  579. and two other philosophers disprove

  580. Christianity and there will not be

  581. churches in a hundred years. 100 years

  582. later, they were making Bibles out of

  583. the house he lived in.

  584. True story.

  585. There's one truth I'm going to tell you

  586. is God is the word. He's the creator and

  587. he is going to win

  588. >> whenever the and I and I notice

  589. Christians get anxious when this stuff

  590. comes. I'm telling you, don't be

  591. anxious. God is so much bigger than this

  592. stuff.

  593. And to quote the great GK Chesterton, if

  594. one studies church history carefully,

  595. there are about five different times

  596. when it looks as if the church has gone

  597. to the dogs, but that in the end, all

  598. five, it was the dogs who died.

  599. So, what about us? We know this

  600. deconstruction stuff is out there and

  601. you might hear about it. Well, for us,

  602. it's to move away from that and to get

  603. good belief. And let me stop and say one

  604. thing. I have no trouble with people

  605. deconstructing bad theology they grew up

  606. with. Do you hear the difference?

  607. It's okay to not accept everything

  608. you've heard when you were a kid that

  609. might not be right.

  610. Prayerfully, but never lose the creator

  611. in the process.

  612. Never lose Jesus. I will sit and I can

  613. talk to you about this. I have wrestled

  614. with things in my own theological life,

  615. but always with the heart for Jesus and

  616. you'll be fine.

  617. You see, because God has given us the

  618. word for us.

  619. Why did he give us this word?

  620. Well, yes, so that he could save us.

  621. Yep. And yes, so that uh he could reveal

  622. himself. But here's the truth. He gave

  623. us this word because without it, he saw

  624. the kinds of gods we make.

  625. I'm convinced the greatest gift he ever

  626. did was give us his word and tell us who

  627. he is and by becoming human, showing us.

  628. Because have you ever seen the other

  629. gods humans make?

  630. They're evil.

  631. They destroy

  632. ideologies like communism and national

  633. socialisms. All of these, these are all

  634. religions, by the way.

  635. They just destroy and kill and and if

  636. you go back to paganism when this was

  637. written, they h they were they it was

  638. all about slavery and one or two people

  639. being from God. And these gods they made

  640. were vicious and misunderstanding and

  641. judgmental and couldn't wait to kill

  642. you.

  643. And then this text comes in and I'm

  644. telling you, he gave us the word as the

  645. greatest gift to us.

  646. He showed us who he really is so we

  647. could start to become who we were really

  648. meant to be.

  649. There is no greater gift than God's

  650. word.

  651. Don Carson says, "In short, God's word

  652. in the Old Testament is his powerful

  653. self-expression

  654. in creation, revelation, and salvation."

  655. And the personification of that word

  656. makes it suitable for John to apply it

  657. as a title to God's ultimate

  658. self-disclosure, the person of his son.

  659. What we have got,

  660. John tells us in Jesus

  661. is the creator of the heaven and earth

  662. right here

  663. telling us things for us.

  664. Never forget that.

  665. And that's why scripture is so

  666. important.

  667. Scripture is not the word as you

  668. understand it as it being the fourth

  669. member of the quadrilateral. But don't

  670. hear me out. Let me finish.

  671. Jesus is the word.

  672. But he's chosen to inspire those texts

  673. and those texts are the word of Jesus

  674. speaking to us.

  675. The greatest gift we have are our

  676. scriptures.

  677. One truth I'm going to say that I

  678. guarantee you can stop praying for a

  679. while, you can do pretty good. You can

  680. stop,

  681. I don't know, whatever else doing Sunday

  682. school teaching or doing your eldership.

  683. But there's one thing I've noticed that

  684. if somebody's going to walk with the

  685. Lord that they need to do is they need

  686. to get their head in the word.

  687. They need to sit there and let it read

  688. them. It's a living book.

  689. Let it cut through to us. Let it convict

  690. us and also encourage us. That's the

  691. greatest gift. And John's telling us the

  692. word has been given for us.

  693. It is incredible. It's God in creation

  694. knowing you better than you know

  695. yourself, wanting to go down and into

  696. your depth of your being, make you into

  697. somebody you were meant to be.

  698. That's why I get so frustrated with

  699. preaching that is not biblically based.

  700. I don't care about seven steps to a

  701. happy marriage. I'm sure there's other

  702. times you can do that. But if the pulpit

  703. is about that and not about Jesus

  704. Christ,

  705. we've missed it.

  706. We can't be here for entertainment. We

  707. got to come in here to grow so we can be

  708. the people of God and make decisions

  709. together

  710. that are lifegiving.

  711. You know, God gave his word because he

  712. wants us, he tells us to have Zoey,

  713. abundant life. That's his goal is that

  714. you have life abundantly. Think about

  715. that.

  716. Most people are like, "Well, if I'm good

  717. enough,

  718. God will like me."

  719. and they're never good enough because

  720. you know what? I'm just like you

  721. because we go at it like religion, not

  722. relationship.

  723. And what this God has said, how many of

  724. us really believe that right now God

  725. wants to give us abundant life.

  726. Life that transcends what we're

  727. experiencing right now. That's what John

  728. says. I didn't make this up. An abundant

  729. life is not how much stuff you have.

  730. I've met out too many rear very rich

  731. people who did not have life

  732. and I've met too many poor people who

  733. had abundant life.

  734. This is the beauty of this story. The

  735. God of heaven and earth that made

  736. everything including you

  737. has come to give you abundant life.

  738. And how does he do it? He does it by

  739. coming into the darkness as the light.

  740. coming into us and to our darkness as

  741. light so that we're free to be who we're

  742. called to be.

  743. You know, when it says the light has not

  744. overcome the darkness, as I meditated on

  745. this this last past week, I think of the

  746. darkness not just of events that happen

  747. around you, but the darkness that's

  748. here. You know what I'm talking about?

  749. That thing that keep you fight all the

  750. time. Do you know what I mean?

  751. And sometimes it can feel overwhelming

  752. like you might lose or just give up.

  753. Have you ever felt that way?

  754. And then that word hit me. The light

  755. cannot be overcome.

  756. You're not going to lose

  757. cuz his light's inside you.

  758. The darkness you see around, the light

  759. does not get overtaken.

  760. That's good news.

  761. Now our world, there's a very depressed

  762. world. We are the number one world

  763. top ever of anti-depressants,

  764. antiscychotics

  765. sales in the richest country ever. And

  766. this is US facts.

  767. And there's a correlation, believe it or

  768. not, between the use of those things as

  769. it not everyone needs them once in a

  770. while. I've been on them. I'm talking

  771. about the constant need of it all the

  772. time. There's a correlation between that

  773. and the loss of church attendance.

  774. There is

  775. because we've been given a lie.

  776. One of the de devil's greatest lies is

  777. that the path to a fulfilling life is to

  778. live for oneself.

  779. And I can't tell you if have you been to

  780. like a there's not these bookstores so

  781. much, but I was in Chapters with Anne

  782. over Christmas and it was the self-help

  783. section. Have you seen this?

  784. And there's thousands of books you can

  785. get. You can get self-help for a

  786. carpenter.

  787. That was one of the books, a self-help

  788. for a carpenter. I bet you that that

  789. book nailed it. Anyways,

  790. that's for you, Jason.

  791. No, we got you know how we get the

  792. abundant life by going into the word,

  793. going into that life, pushing into that

  794. and dying to self.

  795. There's another thing too why we are

  796. living such unhappy lives right now is

  797. we're thinking we have to do this as

  798. individuals.

  799. In my opinion, there's never been a

  800. stronger need for the church and to be

  801. part of a church.

  802. I need you and you need me because this

  803. word only works when we're together.

  804. Notice that word is expressed. It needs

  805. a hearer.

  806. It isn't just an individual. It doesn't

  807. say he came as a thought,

  808. came as a word.

  809. The great Dietrich Bonhaofer, the

  810. Christian needs another Christian who

  811. speaks God's word to him. The Christ in

  812. his own heart is weaker than the Christ

  813. in the word of his brother.

  814. I'm going to tell you, I've been

  815. involved in this small group in our

  816. church for

  817. long time.

  818. And the crazy thing is watching this

  819. church grow and love each other. But

  820. where it is strongest is we're studying

  821. the word and I'm watching people talk to

  822. each other about it and watching them

  823. grow,

  824. challenging them on to good things. That

  825. is life.

  826. And I'll tell you what, I can't imagine

  827. not living it. Praying for each other.

  828. The best thing I saw from this little

  829. small group, and we have four or five

  830. going on, and if you want to join,

  831. you're welcome.

  832. They're so close now that all of a

  833. sudden out of the blue on their I'm on

  834. their text chain. It said, "Let's go

  835. caroling."

  836. And a bunch of them just went out and

  837. got their books and little kids with

  838. them. I always bring little kids because

  839. they can't yell at you. And

  840. they went out and they carolled. And

  841. then they came in and Jason was the band

  842. was here. And he's got a video. Maybe

  843. he'll put it on the web page for you.

  844. And they came in and there they were

  845. singing as they walked down into our

  846. church. And I just saw community life in

  847. the word. And I said, "That's abundant

  848. life.

  849. That's good.

  850. In our world, we are going to have to

  851. realize that the darkness is there. But

  852. John's gospel is here and it's not going

  853. to happen in the first sermon.

  854. But he's going to lead us into how to

  855. believe so that we can have

  856. vibrant

  857. abundant life.

  858. And then we have God.

  859. I'll end with St. Augustine,

  860. he who has God has everything.

  861. He who has everything, but God has

  862. nothing.

  863. This is an invitation

  864. throughout John's gospel to come close.

  865. The word has been proclaimed. God has

  866. spoken and communicated. It's up to us

  867. whether we'll listen.

  868. Let's pray.

  869. Heavenly Father, we thank you for your

  870. amazing goodness to us that you are the

  871. living word, the breathing word, that

  872. you inspired your scriptures, that you

  873. gave them to us as a gift.

  874. We pray Lord

  875. that whatever you do that we uh

  876. that we listen and we act and we build

  877. each other up and we die to self so you

  878. are abundant life can live in us

  879. in Jesus' name. Amen.

  880. Okay, now we're doing
