  1. Our

  2. Old Testament reading this morning is

  3. Psalm 78 verses 10 to 25. Let's hear

    Psalms 78:10–25

  4. God's word.

  5. They did not keep God's covenant but

  6. refused to walk according to his law.

  7. They forgot his works and the wonders

  8. that he had shown them. In the sight of

  9. their fathers, he performed wonders in

  10. the land of Egypt, in the fields of

  11. Zohoan.

  12. He divided the sea and let them pass

  13. through it and made the waters stand

  14. like a heap. In the daytime, he led them

  15. with a cloud and all the night with a

  16. fiery light. He split rocks in the

  17. wilderness and gave them drink

  18. abundantly as from the deep.

  19. He made streams come out of the rock and

  20. caused waters to flow down like rivers.

  21. Yet they sinned still more against him,

  22. rebelling against the most high in the

  23. desert. They tested God in their heart

  24. by demanding the food they craved. They

  25. spoke against God, saying, "Can God

  26. spread a table in the wilderness?"

  27. He struck the rocks so that water gushed

  28. out and streams overflowed. Can he also

  29. give bread or provide meat for his

  30. people?

  31. Therefore, when the Lord heard, he was

  32. full of wrath. A fire was kindled

  33. against Jacob. His anger rose against

  34. Israel because they did not believe in

  35. God and did not trust his saving power.

  36. Yet he commanded the skies above and

  37. opened the doors of heaven. And he

  38. rained down on them mana to eat and gave

  39. them the grain of heaven. Man ate of the

  40. bread of the angels. He sent them food

  41. in abundance.

  42. And our gospel reading today is from the

  43. book of John

  44. 6:es 1-15.

  45. After this, Jesus went away to the other

  46. side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the

  47. Sea of Tiberius.

  48. And a large crowd was following him

  49. because they saw the signs that he was

  50. doing on the sick. Jesus went up on the

  51. mountain, and there he sat down with his

  52. disciples.

  53. Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews,

  54. was at hand. Lifting up his eyes then

  55. and seeing a large crowd was coming

  56. toward him. Jesus said to Philillip,

  57. "Where are we to buy bread so that these

  58. people may eat?" He said this to test

  59. him, for he himself knew what he would

  60. do. Philip answered him, "200 dinari

  61. worth of bread would not be enough for

  62. each of them to get a little."

  63. One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon

  64. Peter's brother, said to him, "There is

  65. a boy here who has five barley loaves

  66. and two fish, but what are they for so

  67. many?" Jesus said, "Have the people sit

  68. down." Now there was much grass in the

  69. place. So the men sat down, about 5,000

  70. in number. Jesus then took the loaves,

  71. and when he had given thanks, he

  72. distributed them to those who were

  73. seated.

  74. So also the fish, as much as they

  75. wanted. And when they had eaten their

  76. fill, he told his disciples, "Gather up

  77. the leftover fragments that nothing may

  78. be lost." So they gathered them up and

  79. filled 12 baskets with fragments from

  80. the five barley loaves left by those who

  81. had eaten. When the people saw the sign

  82. that he had done, they said, "This is

  83. indeed the prophet who is to come into

  84. the world." Perceiving then that they

  85. were about to come and take him by force

  86. to make him king, Jesus withdrew again

  87. to the mountain by himself. This is the

  88. word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

  89. So there's some good news in

  90. Christendom. Men are coming back to

  91. church. Never in generations has that

  92. happened. In fact,

  93. generation zed is actually got more

  94. interest in spirituality than the

  95. females. first time since 1900.

  96. There's a lot of theories of why this

  97. is. A lot of the theories is well,

  98. they've been treated really bad by the

  99. culture.

  100. But the point being is there's a problem

  101. with this. It's good, but anytime

  102. something good happens, something bad

  103. sneaks in. And there's this movement

  104. also that's trying to get these men to

  105. um get involved in politics

  106. to get involved in trying to create a

  107. nation for Christians through might and

  108. militant action. It's called Christian

  109. nationalism.

  110. And unfortunately some of these men are

  111. becoming radically radicalized.

  112. The question is what can we say to them

  113. as a church? What can we do because

  114. these men belong here?

  115. What can we do to help them?

  116. Well, Jesus ran into a world where they

  117. wanted to make kings. They wanted to be

  118. involved in politics.

  119. He came into a world where they only

  120. understood violence. And they took all

  121. of their new young men and tried to make

  122. them.

  123. And in that world, they completely

  124. missed Jesus.

  125. What can we do now that we know these

  126. young men are coming as a church to keep

  127. them away

  128. from the darkness of the powers of the

  129. world and focused on the living God?

  130. Well, Jesus gives us a hint right here.

  131. Let's pray.

  132. Heavenly Father, thank you that you've

  133. been so faithful.

  134. May you help us. May you drive us

  135. towards you.

  136. in Jesus' name. Amen.

  137. In Jesus' day, they wanted a res a

  138. revolution. In Jesus' day, they wanted

  139. to take on and make kings. And Jesus

  140. looked like the one that might do it.

  141. And then they come up to him on the

  142. Passover today. And the Passover was the

  143. one time they believed their deliverer

  144. would come. Just like a Moses figure

  145. like David, he would come and deliver

  146. them.

  147. Well, listen to what happens when they

  148. run into Jesus.

  149. After this, Jesus went away to the other

  150. side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the

  151. Sea of Tiberius.

  152. It's funny how he says Sea of Tiberius.

  153. It was supposed to be the Sea of

  154. Galilee, but Herod gave Tiberius because

  155. that's what they wanted, kings, and

  156. Tiberius was a Caesar. And he gave them,

  157. they gave them as Jews, the kingship of

  158. the lake, the name of the lake over to

  159. Tiberias. This made the Jews hate them,

  160. but Herod did it.

  161. And a large crowds was following him

  162. because they saw the signs that he was

  163. doing on the sick. Now, we know John's

  164. gospel by now, looking for signs and

  165. wonders. And John's gospel is not a good

  166. thing. Why? We've seen again and again

  167. that the people who refuse Jesus are

  168. always looking for signs

  169. because they're not looking for Jesus.

  170. Jesus went up the mountain and there he

  171. sat down with his disciples.

  172. Who and when did we see somebody go up a

  173. mountain to hang out? Moses to go see

  174. God. Right?

  175. So all of this is being laid out. Jesus

  176. is playing something here. He's almost

  177. playing like an Exodus. And why that was

  178. so po important to them is we must

  179. remember the first Exodus.

  180. The first Exodus, that famous story

  181. where Egypt had them enslaves, the

  182. Israelites, and he used signs and

  183. wonders to get rid of them. He had them

  184. walk through the Red Sea. this

  185. incredible story of an empire that had

  186. control of them who God had delivered

  187. them and used Moses.

  188. And so when they would celebrate

  189. Passover, that was the great celebration

  190. of that event.

  191. They weren't just celebrating year after

  192. year, just like we might celebrate an

  193. event that happened like the 4th of July

  194. or Canada Day. They were celebrating

  195. Passover because they were under the

  196. awful Romans and they longed for

  197. deliverance. And they and it if God

  198. could do it once way back when with the

  199. Egyptians, then he could do it again.

  200. And their leaders had told them this was

  201. exactly what was going to happen. You

  202. see, the Passover was in the month of

  203. Nissan. And listen to what this one

  204. rabbi said during that time. In the

  205. month of Nissan, the Israelites were

  206. freed from Egyptian bondage. And in the

  207. month of Nissan, they will be freed

  208. again. You see,

  209. it's going to happen again.

  210. 1 million people came from the Roman

  211. world. 1 million Jews would come into

  212. Jerusalem during this time waiting. Is

  213. this the time that God will deliver us?

  214. And their deliverer, by the way, was not

  215. like Jesus. the deliverer they longed

  216. for. He was a devidic figure. He was

  217. going to be one in the line of David.

  218. Yes, like Moses, a prophet, but he was

  219. going to be a great deliverer, a

  220. militant deliverer. And they looked and

  221. they looked and they looked and they

  222. waited and they waited for that time

  223. because only God could defeat the

  224. Romans. They knew that.

  225. So, they were always watching, who is

  226. this Messiah? Is it time?

  227. Well, enter this.

  228. The Passover, the feast of the Jews was

  229. at hand.

  230. That's why they're all there. And why

  231. are they following Jesus, my friends?

  232. Because

  233. they're looking at him as if he's the

  234. militant deliverer. That's really why

  235. they follow Jesus. These early Jews,

  236. people ask me, how could they go from

  237. following Jesus to saying, "Crucify

  238. him." I can tell you right now, they're

  239. following him because they want a king

  240. like Caesar.

  241. and they yell crucify him because he's

  242. not a king like Caesar.

  243. That's exactly why this happens.

  244. Now, there was another thing that they

  245. were told these early Jews about this

  246. great kingly deliverer that would come

  247. and that was this that just as God had

  248. fed the people in the original Exodus,

  249. just like you know the story how the

  250. mana fell from heaven. They said just

  251. like that when the new messianic player

  252. came, the militant one, they believed he

  253. would also provide that.

  254. Rabbi Isaac, as the former redeemer

  255. caused mana to descend, so will the

  256. latter redeemer cause mana to descend.

  257. They were looking for another feeding,

  258. weren't they? A miraculous feeding to

  259. come. And they're out there with Jesus.

  260. And oh my gosh, what happens?

  261. The Passover's on. And lifting his eyes,

  262. then Jesus sees the large crowd that was

  263. coming towards them.

  264. What happened with Moses when he took

  265. them across into the wilderness?

  266. There were 600,000 people, right? As as

  267. the Bible tells us. In this case, he's

  268. got probably 20,000. He says 5,000 in

  269. number, but you didn't count men and

  270. women or children. You called, sorry,

  271. you only counted men, not women and

  272. children.

  273. So, they're both in a situation where

  274. how do we get fed? The first time the

  275. mana comes because they can't be fed.

  276. But just like that, when they're all

  277. following Jesus, they're in the middle

  278. of Galilee. There are no costs. There's

  279. nowhere to go and get food. Just like

  280. the first Exodus, they're actually in

  281. trouble.

  282. They're following this Jesus faithfully,

  283. undoubtedly thinking he must be the new

  284. deliverer who will feed us.

  285. So, what does Jesus do? Well, first of

  286. all, he has to prove that not only is he

  287. the Mosaic figure, but guess what?

  288. He's the God who feeds. He is Yahweh.

  289. So what he does first is he says to

  290. Jesus as to Philillip

  291. where are we to buy bread so that these

  292. people may eat. He said this to test

  293. them for he knew what he would do.

  294. Philip answered the logical question and

  295. always in John's question the real

  296. logical question isn't the answer that

  297. you need to follow Jesus because Jesus

  298. is beyond logic. Jesus is one of

  299. miracles. His

  300. answer is 200 dinari which takes one

  301. dinari to to for one man's wage in the

  302. ancient world. So basically almost a

  303. full year of a man's wage of bread would

  304. not be enough for each of them to get a

  305. little.

  306. Why would John put that in that

  307. conversation?

  308. Because guess who's going to be the

  309. Moses figure in this story? It's not

  310. Jesus.

  311. Jesus is actually going to play Yahweh.

  312. Philillip. And how did he do this?

  313. Philip, he asked the question and Philip

  314. gives the natural answer.

  315. Well, in the original Exodus story,

  316. Yahweh asks Moses, "How's this going to

  317. work?" And listen to what Yahweh, sorry,

  318. Moses says, "The people among who I am,

  319. number 600,000 on foot, and you have

  320. said, I will give them meat

  321. that they may eat for a whole month."

  322. Listen to his natural response. Moses

  323. gives the right respon the same response

  324. as Philillip. Shall flocks and herds be

  325. slaughtered for them and be enough for

  326. them? Or shall all the fish in the sea

  327. be gathered together for them and be

  328. enough for them? And the Lord said to

  329. Moses,

  330. and here's the key.

  331. He's right, by the way. So is Philillip.

  332. There's no way you can do it. They're

  333. desperate.

  334. But Moses always the Lord puts it this

  335. way. Is the Lord's hand shortened?

  336. Now you will see whether my word, that

  337. word word means promise.

  338. But if I said it, it's going to happen.

  339. You're going to see whether my word will

  340. come true to you or not.

  341. So you've got Philillip doing the exact

  342. same thing as Moses. And Jesus is asking

  343. the question of Yahweh.

  344. Then you have this next weird section.

  345. Andrew Simon, Peter's brother, said to

  346. him,

  347. "There's a boy here who has five barley

  348. loaves and two fish. But what are they

  349. to so many?"

  350. Now, that seems to be an odd thing to

  351. ask, don't you think? Can you imagine?

  352. You're sitting there and there are

  353. literally 20,000 people and no food.

  354. Why would you go look at the little kid

  355. and look at his lunch?

  356. Do you understand what I'm saying? It's

  357. a it's a unusual thing to do.

  358. But he did something by doing this that

  359. connects to another feeding. You see,

  360. not only is Jesus the God of the Exodus

  361. and the New Exodus that everyone longed

  362. for, he's also the prophet of prophets.

  363. And there was another prophet who fed

  364. people he couldn't have had the

  365. resources to feed and his name was

  366. Elijah.

  367. And so what Jesus is going to do here

  368. when he mentions about this boy with the

  369. food and the lunch, he's pointing them

  370. back to the time Elijah did the saying.

  371. But his servant, and the servant means

  372. little boy, that's the connection.

  373. That's exact same word, said, "How can I

  374. set this before a hundred men?" So he

  375. repeated, "Give it to them so that they

  376. may eat, for thus saith the Lord, they

  377. shall eat and have some left." So he

  378. said it before them and they ate and had

  379. some left according to the word of the

  380. Lord. So we've got the exact same

  381. feeding except who is Jesus in both

  382. stories?

  383. He's God.

  384. He's Yahweh. He's greater than Elijah.

  385. He's greater than Moses. He's the one

  386. who leads the Exodus. He's the one you

  387. have to follow to leave the Exodus.

  388. And we have to go back for a sec.

  389. He says about this boy something that's

  390. really profound that Jesus is going to

  391. make a point of. He has five barley

  392. loaves and two fish. What does 5 + 2

  393. equal?

  394. Have you ever heard the number seven in

  395. the Bible?

  396. What's this number seven mean? If you

  397. guys could remember

  398. divine completeness.

  399. So though the world sees this meal as

  400. incomplete,

  401. what's being told to us is this is a

  402. very complete meal cuz it's God's meal.

  403. Remember that.

  404. Well, what does Jesus do after that?

  405. He had the people sit down.

  406. Now there was much grass in that place

  407. because it was a spring. So the man sat

  408. down and then he comes up with this

  409. number about 5,000 in number. Notice he

  410. says about two. Why does he put 5,000?

  411. Remember Jews never wrote without

  412. purpose to their numbers.

  413. Well, you're going to have to go back to

  414. when I taught Revelation.

  415. What does the number three mean?

  416. Complete.

  417. Right? What's the number 10 mean?

  418. Complete, right? We agree with this. If

  419. you remember, you have to go back and

  420. study.

  421. What's 3 * 3 * 3?

  422. >> 3 Sorry, 3 * sorry, 10 * 10 * 10. 3 10.

  423. What's 10 * 10 * 10?

  424. >> It's a thousand. You all agree?

  425. Okay. So, that's means this whatever

  426. this is, this is the complete amount of

  427. people. Why did he choose the number

  428. five?

  429. How many books start in the book in the

  430. first part of the Old Testament?

  431. Five. And what's in those five books?

  432. The Exodus, right? So what he's saying

  433. here is there's there Exodus people are

  434. there of this new Exodus. All the people

  435. that will need to be delivered, he will

  436. feed.

  437. And unlike the people from the first

  438. Exodus where the people, the Jews serve

  439. them, notice what happens here. Jesus

  440. does not have his disciples feed them

  441. the food. He feeds them. Why is that

  442. important? Because in the Old Testament,

  443. it says Yahweh fed the people. Yahweh

  444. provides. There is no intercessor here.

  445. So the man sat down about 5,000 in

  446. number, the complete number of the

  447. Exodus people. Jesus took out the loaves

  448. and when he had given Eucharist, which

  449. is where we get that name from, thanks,

  450. he distributed those to those who were

  451. seated. So also the fish as much as they

  452. wanted. And when they had eaten their

  453. fill, he told his disciples,

  454. just like the Elisha story, gather up

  455. the leftover fragments that nothing may

  456. be lost.

  457. So they gathered them up and filled how

  458. many baskets.

  459. Now you guys must know the number 12 by

  460. now. What's 12 mean?

  461. >> 12 tribes of Israel. 12 disciples,

  462. right? So 12 means the people of God.

  463. And he has enough bread. It doesn't say

  464. fish. No. All of a sudden the fish are

  465. gone because that's not the important

  466. point now. That whatever happens, he has

  467. enough to feed the original New Exodus

  468. community being his disciples that were

  469. there. And he's going to have enough

  470. left over for all of the people of God

  471. as long as they need. And that's why the

  472. 12 baskets meet. Do you see how it's

  473. written?

  474. Bet you didn't see that the first time.

  475. with fragments from the five barley

  476. loaves left over by those who had eaten.

  477. When the people saw the sign he had

  478. done, they said, "This indeed is the

  479. prophet who's come into the world."

  480. Remember guys, that's the verse out of

  481. Deuteronomy 18 where it says Moses says,

  482. "There will be a prophet that follows

  483. me." This is the same prophet they think

  484. is coming that they're applying to their

  485. kingship.

  486. So right away they are saying this guy

  487. has done what we heard just as the one

  488. who fulfilled the feeding in the first

  489. exodus. The second one will come and

  490. feed us in this exodus. So they're

  491. getting excited. This is the redeemer.

  492. This is the king.

  493. You can see you can almost see the

  494. excitement. Finally Rome will be

  495. defeated. Finally we have our David

  496. figure. Get out the swords. Let's get

  497. excited. He's here. He can feed us. What

  498. can he stop? If we have food, we can

  499. fight any army.

  500. H

  501. perceiving then that they were about to

  502. come and take him by force to make him

  503. king, Jesus withdrew again to the

  504. mountain by himself.

  505. What does Jesus do with human kingships?

  506. He goes the other way.

  507. He disappears.

  508. They wanted to make him king. They were

  509. willing to grab him and carry him if

  510. they had to to the temple to make him

  511. king

  512. and he snuck away.

  513. That's because he knows something much

  514. deeper, something so much more profound

  515. that we need to get today.

  516. He is not about the kingships of this

  517. age that are temporal.

  518. He has a kingdom that's eternal.

  519. And he is not a god who comes and does

  520. what Caesar does. He does the exact

  521. opposite of Caesar.

  522. You see, what we're going to find out is

  523. that bread

  524. he's talking about is exactly the bread

  525. we celebrate here.

  526. You see, the Exodus bread is ultimately

  527. going to be him.

  528. You remember in chapter 2 we went to a

  529. wedding of Kaa, the water to wine. Do

  530. you remember all that? And John had a

  531. theology ultimately for those of you who

  532. weren't there, just trust me

  533. that when we take the cup, it is

  534. literally God's tangible grace of the

  535. forgiveness of our sins and the blood of

  536. Christ cleanses our sin. Do you remember

  537. that? Well, now he's actually going to

  538. tell us what the bread means. And the

  539. bread means this.

  540. Later on Jesus said, "Ego me, the bread

  541. of life. I am." What did Jesus call

  542. himself? What did Yahweh call himself in

  543. the Old Testament?

  544. I am that I am. I am the bread of life.

  545. Your fathers ate the man in the

  546. wilderness and they died. This is the

  547. bread that comes down from heaven

  548. so that one may eat of it and not die.

  549. Ego me. He says it again.

  550. I am the living bread that comes down

  551. from heaven. And then listen to this

  552. in this new Passover meal for his new

  553. covenant. If anyone eats of this bread,

  554. he will live forever.

  555. And the bread that I will give for the

  556. life of the world is my flesh.

  557. This new Exodus and this new Passover

  558. and this new covenant and this new meal

  559. means more than the old.

  560. It means when we take the cup, we are

  561. drinking forgiveness, the washing of our

  562. sins.

  563. And when we take this bread,

  564. we have the tangible grace that we are

  565. eating upon ourselves

  566. eternal life.

  567. Isn't that incredible?

  568. So, what about this Christ is king

  569. thing? What about this whole Christian

  570. nationalism?

  571. What about this desire to make our

  572. politics the center? I have uh it's by

  573. the way I've done a little research and

  574. the young men are being tempted by this

  575. and I'm listening to the guys who are

  576. selling it and it's all on the internet

  577. and podcasts you know all that stuff and

  578. it's usually young men who are just

  579. basically angry and it's always American

  580. in this case and they're not happy with

  581. the American left because they've hurt

  582. men and so they're going to go and

  583. redeem the American left through this

  584. new we're going to get Christian

  585. governments and we're going to do it

  586. through the ways of this world. That's

  587. why they had sold. What do you do with

  588. that? Well, first of all, you don't feel

  589. bad for them. Cuz I got news for you.

  590. We've always tried to shoehorn our

  591. politics, Jesus into our politics.

  592. Always.

  593. Since before Jesus came, every empire

  594. had a god that had them winning wars,

  595. gaining power. Mars, Zeus, all of those

  596. guys that you've heard of, they were all

  597. gods that they could rely on that would

  598. back them. The Jews wanted a god that

  599. could do it, too.

  600. All that's a difference now is we put

  601. Jesus in the name.

  602. And in North America, by the way, people

  603. want to have divine right to rule.

  604. Correct?

  605. You say, "No, I say this.

  606. It hasn't changed. Oh, Emry, you're

  607. being um proTrump. Okay, hold on. Hold

  608. on.

  609. That lady, I forget her name.

  610. You know, these are all photo ops, but

  611. what are they saying? Power through God

  612. being on our side, right?

  613. Then I hear from people, "Oh, Emry,

  614. that's just Americans."

  615. Oh, there's our friend Mr. Carney. He's

  616. at church. He's very, very serious.

  617. Oh, Emry, you just don't like the

  618. liberals. Oh, really? Well, how about

  619. there, Pierre? He's sitting there doing

  620. his church thing.

  621. It happens again and again and again and

  622. again and again. We want to put Jesus

  623. into our world and have him endorsing

  624. us.

  625. We want to shoehorn him into Oh, I got

  626. more. By the way,

  627. there's Carney with some guy that wears

  628. a lot more robes than I do. I think he's

  629. winning an award. Best Christian of the

  630. month.

  631. And there's Pierre. And I have no idea

  632. what these guys are, but he's happy.

  633. That's nice.

  634. My point being,

  635. politics and religion are always there

  636. and these young guys are just learning

  637. this now because God has hit them.

  638. And that's the truth. Just like they

  639. wanted to make Jesus as king after he

  640. fed them and showed him he was Yahweh,

  641. it's no different.

  642. But here's the problem.

  643. God's kingdom

  644. is not the kingdoms of these worlds.

  645. God doesn't do photo ops.

  646. Jesus doesn't need to make sure enough

  647. money is given to his fund to vote

  648. Jesus.

  649. He doesn't fit in this world and he

  650. didn't fit in their world. And I'm going

  651. to tell you what, this is incredibly

  652. good news for you and me.

  653. Because you know what? If he chose to be

  654. like Caesar, what does Caesar do?

  655. He kills. He ms. He destroys in the name

  656. of power. And what do politicians do

  657. today?

  658. The biggest lie that I've ever heard is

  659. that your politicians are liking you.

  660. Like they sit and like to you. One

  661. person said, "It's kind of like when

  662. you're getting served by a waitress and

  663. you really think she's flirting with

  664. you.

  665. They don't like you. They're doing their

  666. own thing. They always have

  667. and they always will." You know, if I

  668. wake up today and I say, "Darn that,

  669. Carney." Do you know what? He doesn't

  670. go, "Oh, Emry,"

  671. he doesn't care I exist.

  672. Right?

  673. And the best part is because he's not a

  674. king like this, he brought a kingdom

  675. that's greater than anything we could

  676. have imagined.

  677. You see, the biggest problem with

  678. Christian nationalism, actually I'm

  679. going to quote Tim and Wright on this.

  680. Christian nationalism is impoverished as

  681. it seeks a kingdom without a cross. It

  682. pursues victory without mercy.

  683. Yet it claims God's love of power rather

  684. than the power of God's love. We ought

  685. to remember that Jesus refused those who

  686. wanted to make him king by force just as

  687. much as he refused to become king by

  688. calling upon 12 legions of angels.

  689. Now before you say, "Oh, Emry, you're

  690. taking on the right." I can tell you the

  691. left is just silly.

  692. This guy James Telerico has just come

  693. out and said we aren't going to call God

  694. may uh lord or king or king or lord

  695. because that's too masculine.

  696. I guess so.

  697. It's all a mess.

  698. The good news, folks, is we don't have

  699. to choose

  700. because we have a whole different king.

  701. Our king reigns.

  702. He is the one in charge. But he doesn't

  703. reign like the worlds around him. And

  704. when people walk around and try and make

  705. him fit into their little bubble, their

  706. little hobby horse, their little thing,

  707. they lose the very king there is. In

  708. fact, they have faith in something that

  709. isn't God.

  710. Lesly Noob again. This is not faith

  711. actually but unbelief. They have not

  712. understood who Jesus is. Jesus will not

  713. be the instrument of any human

  714. enthusiasm or the symbol for any kingdom

  715. program for any human program. To say

  716. Jesus is king is true if the word king

  717. is wholly defined by the person of

  718. Jesus.

  719. If it is false and blasphemous,

  720. blasphemous, if Jesus is made

  721. instrumental to a definition of kingship

  722. derived from elsewhere,

  723. Jesus has come to proclaim liberty to

  724. the captives, but he will not become the

  725. mascot for a people's movement of

  726. liberation.

  727. Whether you're on the left or the right,

  728. whatever you are, Jesus won't be shoved

  729. into your spot.

  730. And that is fantastic news. Do you know

  731. why? Because the way he delivers

  732. is so much greater

  733. than the kingdoms of this world.

  734. Don Carson said it so well. Jesus

  735. himself knew that the way his kingdom

  736. would triumph would not be by beating

  737. the enemy in siege warfare. That's what

  738. the kings of the world do.

  739. but by dying and rising from the dead.

  740. He would go to Jerusalem not to wield

  741. the spear and bring the judgment,

  742. but to receive the spear thrust and bear

  743. the judgment.

  744. Every other king wants you to serve them

  745. now and before

  746. Jesus came to serve us.

  747. Every other king wants your allegiance

  748. or your death.

  749. Jesus wants your soul and life

  750. so much that he died for you.

  751. Think of all the kings and the leaders

  752. in our world. How many do you think

  753. would die on a cross for you?

  754. I thought about it and there's only one

  755. way we can really find the true king

  756. and we have to lay down power.

  757. And how do we lay down power?

  758. By being desperate.

  759. The desperate need

  760. equals salvation.

  761. It is only when you are nothing do you

  762. get the Jesus who became nothing and

  763. then he takes you out of nothing and

  764. makes you something.

  765. As soon as you have something, you will

  766. seek power and you will seek people with

  767. power and you'll stick Jesus in those

  768. spots. But when you've been emptied,

  769. when you've hit your low point, you

  770. can't be there.

  771. You remember that little church in Nicol

  772. then Nicolatians

  773. in Revelation

  774. said Jesus said I'm going about to spit

  775. you out of your mouth my mouth. Do you

  776. remember that?

  777. And everybody's like why would you want

  778. to do that? Well listen to these words

  779. for you Nicollesians

  780. say I am rich. I have prospered. I need

  781. nothing.

  782. You'll never find Jesus.

  783. Not realizing the Lord says to them that

  784. you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind,

  785. and naked.

  786. If you have power, you will seek after

  787. power, and you will take Jesus with you

  788. to whatever power politics you go.

  789. But if you were emptied,

  790. then there's you'll realize there's only

  791. one king.

  792. This is why I say to people when they're

  793. at their lowest points, you're probably

  794. closest to God.

  795. I've been in churches where people say,

  796. "Well, you just got to have enough faith

  797. and you'll get more and you'll have more

  798. and you'll be healthier." You might be

  799. and you'll totally miss God.

  800. Cuz guess who God hangs out with?

  801. Misfits like me.

  802. I love this quote by Carl Bart.

  803. If we fix our eyes upon the place where

  804. the course of the world reaches its

  805. lowest point,

  806. where its vanity is unmistakable,

  807. where its groanings are most bitter and

  808. the divine incognito most impenetrable,

  809. we shall encounter there Jesus Christ.

  810. The transformation of all things occurs

  811. where the riddle of human life reaches

  812. its ultimating point.

  813. The hope of his glory emerges for us

  814. when nothing but the ex existentiality

  815. of God remains. It's the only way

  816. and he becomes to us the veritable and

  817. living God

  818. when everything else is lost.

  819. He whom we can apprehend only is against

  820. us all of a sudden stands there for us

  821. when we're empty.

  822. I found a quote by a lady. I didn't have

  823. a clue she existed before this week.

  824. And she talked about why we need Jesus

  825. and Jesus only. And she took every

  826. reference from John's gospel. And she

  827. flipped it and said, "Jesus says he's

  828. this and if you don't believe Jesus,

  829. this is what it means." And I just want

  830. to read it because it's so powerful why

  831. we need to be desperate.

  832. If Jesus is the bread of life, loss of

  833. Jesus means starving.

  834. If Jesus is the light of the world,

  835. loss of Jesus means darkness.

  836. If Jesus is the good shepherd, loss of

  837. Jesus means wandering alone and lost.

  838. If Jesus is the resurrection and the

  839. life, loss of Jesus is eternal death.

  840. And if Jesus is the lamb of God,

  841. sacrifice for our sins, loss of Jesus

  842. means paying that price for ourselves.

  843. I'm going to tell you, it's really

  844. important what I'm going to say to you

  845. right now.

  846. Go and do your politics. Go and vote.

  847. Do whatever you want. You You got

  848. issues. You got things you're excited

  849. about, go ahead. You realize you're

  850. really, really lucky. You don't live in

  851. first century Rome where you didn't have

  852. the vote,

  853. but please

  854. don't shoehorn Jesus into your politics.

  855. Don't try and make him king by force

  856. because as soon as you do, you're going

  857. to look around and he'll be gone.

  858. The truth is, and this is the greatest

  859. thing we pray, your kingdom come. And

  860. it's going to come.

  861. It's not a kingdom of this world.

  862. It is a kingdom that is coming that'll

  863. be like nothing we could imagine.

  864. No eye has seen, right? No ear has

  865. heard. Everything we're seeing now is a

  866. fade, just a a a bad image of it.

  867. One day the king comes back and he is a

  868. king.

  869. And for those who sought him in their

  870. desperation, he will say, "Well done.

  871. Come on in."

  872. And those who said, "Thanks. I've had it

  873. all figured out. I got the power."

  874. Is going to go very well. Your will be

  875. done.

  876. When we take this,

  877. we are not just remembering an event

  878. that happened sometime in the past.

  879. When we take this, our living God is

  880. here with us right now.

  881. Our King is here right now to equip us,

  882. to cleanse our sins, and to give us

  883. eternal life. The tangible graces

  884. through these elements.

  885. Now, you say, Emry, are you saying this

  886. is literally Jesus? No, I'm not a

  887. Catholic.

  888. I It's not literally Jesus' body and

  889. bread because where's Jesus right now,

  890. by the way? Where is his body?

  891. He ascended. He's in the heaven with the

  892. father. Can't kill him. And he said

  893. there's only one sacrifice anyway. It's

  894. not It's not his body

  895. and blood.

  896. It's also not just a memory of an event

  897. that happened.

  898. And no, Luther, God bless you, Luther. I

  899. always tried to find the third way. who

  900. he actually said, "I love Luther on

  901. this." He said, "No, it's not his

  902. literal body and blood, but once it goes

  903. past your esophagus, it becomes his body

  904. and blood."

  905. Don't try and look that up biblically.

  906. It's not there.

  907. We're reformed.

  908. John Calvin is the one area where I

  909. think he nailed this. This was his

  910. moment. And he said it like this, and

  911. it's so true.

  912. When we take this meal, we are invited

  913. at the king's table by faith.

  914. And he is there in those elements. The

  915. one who cleanses us, the one who gives

  916. us eternal life. Who is he there for?

  917. What does the Bible say his presence on

  918. earth is? Who is it? By the Holy Spirit.

  919. This is not a nothing thing we're doing.

  920. The Holy Spirit breathes on this in in

  921. so much it becomes Jesus' life. I have

  922. been amongst people who believe this and

  923. people get healed at times because it

  924. really is Jesus spirit's presence there.

  925. I talk to charismatics who don't believe

  926. this and I'm like you're missing it man.

  927. This is better than the fakey jaky bakey

  928. lakies. Like it is better than all that

  929. cuz this is God's there. He's there.

  930. I'm not against all the other stuff but

  931. this is it.

  932. And you know what this tells us when we

  933. eat this? That this is the kingdom we're

  934. aligned to.

  935. And by faith, we got our eyes looking

  936. over the east for him to come back.

  937. And one day we will sit with our king

  938. and eat with him. That's what that

  939. promises,

  940. gentlemen.

  941. two generations removed from John the

  942. gospel writer I'm reading today his name

  943. is Irenaeus

  944. he studied under Polyarp and Polyarp was

  945. basically John's disciple

  946. and he wrote this incredible thing about

  947. the bread I want you to read it before

  948. we take communion

  949. just as the bread which comes from the

  950. earth having received no invocation of

  951. God is no longer sorry having received

  952. the invocation of God is no longer

  953. ordinary bread. The Eucharist consisting

  954. consisting of two realities, earthly and

  955. heavenly. So our bodies having received

  956. the Eucharist are no longer corruptable

  957. because

  958. they have the hope of the resurrection.

  959. When we take these elements by faith,

  960. when we put it in, what Jesus is saying

  961. is when you eat of this bread, you have

  962. eternal life. I just read that. Did you

  963. hear that?

  964. When you take these elements, your body

  965. isn't corruptible. It's not that you

  966. aren't going to die, but in God's sphere

  967. and in his economy, you have eternal

  968. life.

  969. Is there anything greater than that?

  970. So my friends, please

  971. don't get caught in the worldly

  972. politics.

  973. Don't stick Jesus.

  974. Don't don't paint a picture like that

  975. one person of Jesus writing laws through

  976. Trump's hand or whatever it was. Please

  977. don't.

  978. Jesus transcends that and his kingdom

  979. transcends that. Be citizens of heaven.

  980. And on that day, and people will mock

  981. you for not being so into politics.

  982. On that day, you really will hear those

  983. words, "Well done, my good and faithful

  984. servant."

  985. Cuz you followed the only king and God

  986. who's eternal.

  987. Also, I have to remind you that all of

  988. the politics you're seeing, everything

  989. you see on the news tonight

  990. is going to disappear.

  991. Tiberius is gone.

  992. Every Caesar is gone. Every emperor is

  993. gone.

  994. The one that's lasted is who?

  995. Jesus Christ.

  996. Because he's the one eternal God.

  997. Let's pray.

  998. Heavenly Father, we thank you

  999. that you have been so faithful to us.

1000. We thank you that you um pour yourself

  1001. upon us.

1002. We pray that you will be in these

1003. elements, that you will transform us

1004. even today, and that you will give us

1005. the belief that your spirit is truly

1006. alive doing amazing things amongst us

  1007. in Jesus name.

  1008. Amen.
