  1. God's word

  2. from the Old Testament,

  3. Isaiah 55.

  4. "Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the

  5. waters.

  6. And he who has no money, come, buy and

  7. eat.

  8. Come, buy wine and milk without money

  9. and without price.

  10. Why do you spend your money for that

  11. which is not bread and your labor for

  12. that which does not satisfy?

  13. Listen diligently to me and eat what is

  14. good and delight yourselves in rich

  15. food.

  16. Incline your ear and come to me.

  17. Hear that your soul may live, and I will

  18. make with you an everlasting covenant,

  19. my steadfast, sure love for David.

  20. Behold, I made him a witness to the

  21. peoples, a leader and commander for the

  22. peoples.

  23. Behold, you shall call a nation that you

  24. do not know, and a nation that did not

  25. know you shall run to you

  26. because of the Lord your God and of the

  27. Holy One of Israel,

  28. for he has glorified you.

  29. Seek the Lord while he may be found.

  30. Call upon him while he is near.

  31. Let the wicked forsake his way and the

  32. unrighteous man his thoughts.

  33. Let him return to the Lord that he may

  34. have compassion on him

  35. and to our God, for he will abundantly

  36. pardon.

  37. For my thoughts are not your thoughts,

  38. neither are your ways my ways, declares

  39. the Lord.

  40. For as the heavens are higher than the

  41. earth, so are my ways higher than your

  42. ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.

  43. For as the rain and the snow come down

  44. from heaven and do not return there, but

  45. water the earth, making it bring forth

  46. and sprout,

  47. giving seed to the sower and bread to

  48. the eater,

  49. so shall my word be that goes out from

  50. my mouth.

  51. It shall not return to me empty,

  52. but it will accomplish that which I

  53. purpose and shall succeed in the thing

  54. for which I sent it.

  55. For you shall go out in joy and be led

  56. forth in peace.

  57. The mountains and the hills before you

  58. shall break forth into singing and all

  59. the trees of the field shall clap their

  60. hands.

  61. Instead of the thorn shall come up the

  62. cypress. Instead of the briar

  63. shall come up the myrtle.

  64. And it shall make a name for the Lord,

  65. an everlasting sign that shall not be

  66. cut off.

  67. From the New Testament,

  68. the Gospel of John chapter 6, verses 35

    John 6:35–40

  69. through 40.

  70. Jesus said to them,

  71. "I am the bread of life.

  72. Whoever comes to me shall not hunger,

  73. and whoever believes in me shall never

  74. thirst.

  75. But I said to you that you have seen me

  76. and yet do not believe.

  77. All that the Father gives me will come

  78. to me, and whoever comes to me I will

  79. never cast out. For I have come down

  80. from heaven, not to do my own will, but

  81. the will of him who sent me.

  82. And this is the will of him who sent me,

  83. that I should lose nothing of all that

  84. he has given me,

  85. but raise it up on the last day.

  86. For this is the will of my father,

  87. that everyone who looks on the son and

  88. believes in him should have eternal

  89. life, and I will raise him up on the

  90. last day.

  91. This is the word of the Lord.

  92. >> Thanks be to God.

  93. Okay.

  94. So, here we are I I going to end after

  95. this and for 3 weeks, so the other

  96. people won't re uh continue in John, but

  97. I'd recommend you guys keep reading John

  98. and see what you can get out of it while

  99. I'm not there.

  100. So, I'm going to start off with a quote

  101. by a well-known atheist, Ricky Gervais.

  102. Have you heard of Ricky Gervais before?

  103. Very very very

  104. bold and and he takes his atheism very

  105. very seriously. He makes this comment.

  106. You probably can you read it? I don't

  107. know. I'll read it down here. Next time

  108. someone tells me they believe in God,

  109. I'll say, "Oh, which one? Zeus, Hades,

  110. Jupiter, Mars, Odin, Thor, Krishna,

  111. Vishnu, Vishnu,

  112. Ra?"

  113. If they say just God,

  114. "I only believe in the one God. I'll

  115. point out that they're nearly as

  116. atheistic as me. I don't believe in

  117. 2,870

  118. gods, they just don't believe in 2,869."

  119. It's an interesting thought, right?

  120. And frankly, it's hilarious. It throws

  121. people off.

  122. Like this is some great wisdom that he

  123. has.

  124. I can assure you it's not great wisdom.

  125. And it's frankly not very logical.

  126. If you really think about it, it would

  127. be like saying

  128. well, there's a princess Jasmine and

  129. there's a princess Cinderella and

  130. there's a princess

  131. Uh what are some others?

  132. Sure, you guys know them all.

  133. And so we know all these princesses from

  134. Disney, which we know are creations.

  135. So then there mustn't be a princess

  136. Diana.

  137. I mean, come on, there's so many.

  138. How could we have one?

  139. Do you see?

  140. I mean, it doesn't make sense. It's not

  141. logical, but it does throw people off.

  142. Because there is one problem

  143. in belief and it's been around since the

  144. ancient world.

  145. We create too many dang gods.

  146. We are idol worshipers. If you go in the

  147. ancient world, I believe that they

  148. studied humanity and it was actually

  149. much more than 2,700. They had found

  150. about 3,900

  151. different deities

  152. within humanity historically.

  153. 3,900

  154. different deities.

  155. And guess what?

  156. Ricky Gervais was not the first one to

  157. observe that there's a whole lot of

  158. these gods.

  159. And that's why he led and and why he led

  160. him to his atheism. The ancient Greeks

  161. their philosophers said, "None of these

  162. gods are real because they're all too

  163. human-like and there's too many of

  164. them."

  165. Surprises people that the ancient

  166. philosophers of the Roman world thought

  167. the same. All of the elites thought this

  168. way, not the poor, but the ones that

  169. could read.

  170. They all had whether it was the

  171. Epicureans or the Stoics, they all

  172. believed that there couldn't be one god

  173. because there was all these gods and how

  174. would you know?

  175. Remember when Jesus says to him, "I am

  176. the truth" to

  177. to uh pilot.

  178. What was his answer?

  179. What is truth?

  180. Because he's like

  181. Ricky Gervais.

  182. If there's all these truths out there,

  183. if there's all these gods,

  184. who knows? And he was an elitist,

  185. Pilate.

  186. So, how do we deal with this?

  187. Well, first of all, we have to

  188. understand there has always been one

  189. religion that believes in only one God.

  190. And it's the only religion in antiquity

  191. that believed in only one God. And you

  192. know what that was?

  193. Jews. Jews, right? And they were very

  194. odd in their world, and they were

  195. persecuted for it because no one else

  196. could understand them. Everyone else

  197. believed in a multiplicity of gods

  198. except for the philosophers.

  199. And here these Jews held to this view

  200. that this one God was not only the only

  201. God, but he was the good God.

  202. And they had been talked to and they

  203. believed that God had spoken to them

  204. through their scriptures.

  205. Through the through the first five books

  206. of the Old Testament, through the law,

  207. and through the prophets that came

  208. after, and the wisdom literature, they

  209. believed God was saying something to

  210. them. And every time there seemed to be

  211. this reality that there was a promise

  212. cuz Israel never became what it was

  213. supposed to be.

  214. It always was turning to the idols, and

  215. there was always this promise something

  216. more would happen.

  217. And we see this, and they're called

  218. Messianic texts, okay?

  219. And what that means is these are

  220. scriptures in the Old Testament that

  221. they used

  222. to point to what might one day happen.

  223. And John in his gospel has been saying

  224. Jesus is fulfilling all of those texts

  225. that say who God who the deliverance of

  226. God, the new Exodus. That's what they

  227. called it.

  228. And most importantly, there was one

  229. area, and you should read by the way

  230. Isaiah 40 to 66. It's called Deutero

  231. Isaiah. And they cute they quote this

  232. section of the Bible the New Testament

  233. writers more than anywhere else.

  234. In fact, one person called it the fifth

  235. gospel.

  236. And why that is is because those texts

  237. are promising

  238. the new Exodus and they're saying it's

  239. going to come out like this. And what

  240. John's gospel is doing is showing that

  241. Jesus is fulfilling

  242. these promises.

  243. You'll remember back in the first

  244. chapter if you guys have been following

  245. along.

  246. Remember when when John the Baptist

  247. cried out about Jesus, "Behold the lamb

  248. of God who's going to turn the sins of

  249. the world. Just going to take away the

  250. sins of the world." Remember that?

  251. Well, that's right out of Isaiah 53.

  252. Right in the middle.

  253. And that's that whole suffering servant

  254. song. He bore our transgressions. It

  255. says like a lamb that that's was quiet

  256. before slaughter. He was that lamb. So,

  257. that was the first point. He takes

  258. Isaiah 53. Then right after that we see

  259. John the Baptist again and he says,

  260. "There's the bridegroom." when he's

  261. talking about

  262. um Jesus.

  263. And I and I'm just the best man.

  264. Why that matters is Jesus goes and meets

  265. the woman by the well and she starts

  266. talking about her husband and we find

  267. out later that she's had six.

  268. And Jesus was there telling her she

  269. could have new covenant life making her

  270. the seventh, him the seventh, the divine

  271. bridegroom. Well, in Isaiah 54, what

  272. does it say? "I the Lord am your

  273. husband."

  274. Do you see?

  275. So, he's fulfilled that. He says, "I'm

  276. the one who's going to come sacrifice

  277. and I'm the one who's going to reset

  278. covenant."

  279. And then today

  280. we get to a text. And after you got the

  281. how to this new Exodus would come

  282. through sacrifice

  283. and the promise of the fruit of that

  284. sacrifice the new covenant represented

  285. in the father or God being the husband.

  286. Now you've got this invitation.

  287. This is the third thing and it's in

  288. Isaiah 55. So we've gone Isaiah 53 54

  289. and now 55.

  290. It says this.

  291. Come everyone who thirsts.

  292. This is the invitation to come into this

  293. new Exodus.

  294. Come to the waters and he who has no

  295. money come by eat come by wine and milk

  296. without money and without price.

  297. Why do you spend your money on that

  298. which is not bread and your labor on

  299. that which does not satisfy?

  300. Listen diligent to me and eat what is

  301. good and delight yourself in the riches

  302. of food.

  303. This is the invitation to come and eat

  304. and dine

  305. with God.

  306. And they were waiting for this

  307. opportunity for this bread and wine to

  308. come this water this living water to

  309. come.

  310. Well, Jesus has been hinting, hasn't he?

  311. He's been hinting again and again and

  312. again who he is but today now he quotes

  313. this point-blank.

  314. But he changes one thing.

  315. He is the center.

  316. Jesus said to them,

  317. "I am ego a me."

  318. That's just the name of God.

  319. God the bread of life.

  320. I am that one.

  321. The invitation's here.

  322. Whoever comes to me

  323. shall never shall not hunger.

  324. So the eating of Jesus is coming to him.

  325. Eating of the bread is coming to him.

  326. That's the metaphor.

  327. And whoever believes in me shall never

  328. thirst.

  329. He's doing the invitation of the

  330. promised Exodus and he's putting it

  331. around himself.

  332. That's incredible.

  333. Everything the Jews had hoped for for

  334. generations is now being laid out and

  335. Jesus says, "Come to me and you can have

  336. this stuff."

  337. The days of Isaiah's promise is here.

  338. Unfortunately,

  339. they're not really into it.

  340. For Jesus says, "But I say to you that

  341. you have seen me and yet do not

  342. believe."

  343. Remember that was the one work of God

  344. they had to do. Do you remember last

  345. week?

  346. They had to believe.

  347. That's the line in the sand

  348. of whether you're in or you're out.

  349. You know, we we talk about all these

  350. different theological concepts and we

  351. like to have them, but here's really the

  352. fundamental in and out of Jesus' people.

  353. Do you believe or don't you?

  354. It is no longer wrapped around Gentile

  355. and Jew.

  356. It isn't.

  357. It's no longer wrapped around male or

  358. female, no as much as we like to fight

  359. about stuff like that.

  360. It's no longer wrapped around our

  361. economic system or where we live. It's

  362. always will be from now on

  363. what side are you on?

  364. Do you believe

  365. or not?

  366. And he's looking at those Gal- Galileans

  367. who are around him saying, "You don't

  368. believe."

  369. Now, it can seem to them that perhaps

  370. he's a failure then if they don't

  371. believe in him.

  372. But he stops right away and says,

  373. "But hold on.

  374. All that the Father gives me will come

  375. to me."

  376. What he's really saying there is

  377. he hasn't given me you.

  378. It's a real slam.

  379. And whoever comes to me, I will never

  380. cast out.

  381. Now, what's interesting here is he

  382. locates the

  383. genesis of salvation on where?

  384. God.

  385. And all the Father gives me

  386. will come to me.

  387. It's not on us, is it?

  388. Don't worry, I'll get to it.

  389. And whoever comes to me, I will never

  390. cast out. For I have come down. This is

  391. the important point. I have come down

  392. from heaven.

  393. I have come down from heaven not to do

  394. my own will,

  395. but the will of him who sent me. So, he

  396. has a job description.

  397. This is what he's supposed to do. What

  398. is that? But to do the will of him

  399. that's supposed to. Now, the Jews

  400. thought the will of the Messiah was to

  401. be to do the will of God, which was to

  402. destroy the Romans, right?

  403. But listen to what he says the will of

  404. God is.

  405. And this is the will of him who sent me,

  406. that I should lose nothing of all that

  407. he has given me. These words are

  408. incredibly assuring.

  409. That it's God's will

  410. that he will never lose those

  411. who have come to him.

  412. Why is it so assuring?

  413. Because there's not one of you have not

  414. felt

  415. like you have done something so wrong

  416. that God

  417. has abandoned you.

  418. But if you read this closely,

  419. it says for it's the will of the Father

  420. that I shall lose nothing of all that he

  421. has given me.

  422. And then the second part's even more

  423. powerful.

  424. This is his will for the people he wants

  425. to believe including us.

  426. But raise it up on the last day. It is

  427. God's will

  428. to give you eternal life.

  429. It's not Jesus I have to. They tried

  430. really hard.

  431. It is his character to want to give you

  432. resurrection life.

  433. Think about that.

  434. For this is the will of my father, he

  435. says again, that everyone who looks on

  436. the son

  437. This to behold the son is to look upon

  438. him and it's always to look upon him on

  439. the cross, remember?

  440. That sees that as their salvation and

  441. everything and believes in him should

  442. have eternal life.

  443. That's his will. That's God's will.

  444. It's not our will. I want eternal life.

  445. It's God's will you get eternal life.

  446. And I will raise him up on the last day.

  447. God's will

  448. is to make sure that God that that Jesus

  449. does the action so that no one will be

  450. lost.

  451. God's will is that you be saved.

  452. God's will is that you will be there in

  453. eternity with him and have eternal life.

  454. That's God's will.

  455. Why did I just emphasize that?

  456. Because most people like Ricky Gervais

  457. do not see God in that light.

  458. In fact, most people in the church don't

  459. see God in that light.

  460. They feel very satisfied when they're

  461. told how great a sinners they are

  462. because at least they can do something

  463. perhaps to get right.

  464. The idea of the angry God, the God

  465. that's staring down at you, who is

  466. saying you blew it again, that's our

  467. tendency, folks.

  468. Our tendency is not to see God as

  469. somebody who really wants to be with us.

  470. We see God as somebody that's so far

  471. beyond us

  472. that if somehow it's a miracle that a

  473. few can get in.

  474. And it's been preached from the pulpit.

  475. And we preach against sinner and sin

  476. because of that. And we're very

  477. concerned about sin and sinners because

  478. we know that God really doesn't want to

  479. have you there, but if you do the right

  480. things,

  481. you might get it.

  482. Here's how I know that's not God.

  483. He come down.

  484. This is the truth, folks. I have studied

  485. religion my whole life, and there is

  486. never

  487. ever

  488. ever a time that there's a God like

  489. Jesus.

  490. I've read Hinduism. I've read Buddhism.

  491. I've read Islam.

  492. I have read all kinds of stuff. I've

  493. even read pagan mythology from the

  494. ancient world.

  495. There is no God who comes down and

  496. empties himself and becomes like a

  497. slave.

  498. Not one.

  499. They are the Hindu avatars. They come in

  500. and they take over a body, but they're

  501. really still God. And they come around

  502. people and act like gods. There's Thor

  503. and Zeus and all of those guys, and they

  504. might interact with their created order,

  505. but it certainly

  506. doesn't take away their divinity.

  507. There is no God like Jesus Christ.

  508. And I'll tell you what else, these gods

  509. are to be afraid you should be afraid of

  510. because these are the gods that will

  511. smite you with the lightning.

  512. You know where that lightning comes

  513. from, right?

  514. Comes from Zeus.

  515. Doesn't come from Jesus.

  516. So, next time my wife says to me,

  517. "You're going to get get hit by

  518. lightning." I'm going to say, "No,

  519. that's pagan."

  520. She does say that to me sometimes.

  521. This God is incredibly different than

  522. those other gods

  523. that Ricky Gervais mentioned.

  524. For this God has come down

  525. amongst us and emptied himself.

  526. We so often in the church of the West

  527. believe in the gods of the West. We

  528. believe, and we almost can't help it,

  529. that God is a God who's about success

  530. cuz we're about success, right?

  531. We can't help ourselves to think that

  532. God is there to make our happy life

  533. because that's the promise

  534. of the false god of our world.

  535. We want a God who sits there and is way

  536. above us

  537. that we can reach for.

  538. Not one that came down and often when

  539. we're looking up for that God, we don't

  540. see the God below us.

  541. Brennan and Manning said, "He is the

  542. only God man has ever heard of

  543. who [snorts] loves sinners."

  544. The gods, the false gods, the gods of

  545. human manufacturing despise sinners, and

  546. it's true.

  547. But the father of Jesus all, no matter

  548. what they do. He is love. Love enough to

  549. come down

  550. and be amongst us.

  551. His will is to save us.

  552. You have to hear that.

  553. You think it's your will to save

  554. yourself.

  555. If it was up to you, you'd fail.

  556. The only reason you're sitting here, oh

  557. believer, is cuz it's his will

  558. that you be saved.

  559. So, what is the will of God?

  560. Well, we hear it again today here.

  561. But again, I want you to understand that

  562. this is something you really need to

  563. think about.

  564. It is a daily thing that you are going

  565. to get attacked about cuz it's something

  566. I know about you

  567. because I'm one of you

  568. is you are going to sin. Did you know

  569. that?

  570. Anybody know that?

  571. That you're going to sin a lot.

  572. You're not going to walk out of here 5

  573. ft off the ground.

  574. You're not going to go out and heal the

  575. world.

  576. And if you don't believe yourself, just

  577. go start driving in traffic for about 10

  578. minutes.

  579. And you're going to find out that you

  580. know what? I ain't so hot.

  581. I've done that where I preached a sermon

  582. and I feel so good about myself. I have,

  583. so many times.

  584. And I'm driving home and someone cuts me

  585. off and something comes out of my mouth

  586. and I'm like,

  587. Anyone else?

  588. Or how about when you have kids getting

  589. ready for church?

  590. The thoughts that come out of your mind

  591. I did it.

  592. Trying to shove them in those car seats,

  593. I can tell you some not Christian things

  594. came out of my mouth.

  595. I lost my shoe. I don't want to go.

  596. Let's be honest. Let's just be honest

  597. with ourselves.

  598. Full of sin, man.

  599. And what the devil does

  600. and he does it well and I think it's his

  601. number one move to Christians

  602. is you're not loved.

  603. You're not cared for.

  604. You don't belong.

  605. Look at your past.

  606. Look at what you've done.

  607. And then we get down.

  608. And then pretty soon we think, and this

  609. is his goal,

  610. I don't belong here with these religious

  611. people.

  612. What he won't show you is how dark they

  613. are.

  614. So people stop going to church. That's

  615. his goal.

  616. They stop praying to God

  617. because they've been put down

  618. and they start to believe a lie, but

  619. he's created an idol, a different god

  620. than this.

  621. Philippians tells us, no, Ephesians

  622. tells us in chapter 6 that we need to

  623. put on in spiritual warfare the helmet

  624. of salvation. It's such a powerful

  625. powerful image.

  626. Cuz the helmet protected your head and

  627. your brain

  628. from the flaming

  629. lies of the Satan.

  630. Well, here's what I'm going to tell you,

  631. my folks. That god that is telling you

  632. you're no good, that you don't deserve,

  633. you don't belong, is the false god,

  634. Satan. It is the accuser of the

  635. brethren.

  636. I promise you.

  637. I love what Luther said in talking in

  638. the first person of God speaking about

  639. this exact situation. I am more

  640. trustworthy than your heart

  641. and conscience are.

  642. I, being God, will not cast you out.

  643. Your conscience lies to you

  644. when it suggests that you must fear me

  645. as a judge.

  646. How many people

  647. go to church on Sunday

  648. terrified of the God they claim to

  649. worship and just hoping he'll somehow

  650. let them in?

  651. Rather than embracing the God whose will

  652. is to embrace them and give them life.

  653. I used to teach I used to preach in a

  654. church which was full of older

  655. Presbyterians. And we used to have the

  656. communion table come up and

  657. Presbyterians would very much warn you

  658. if you weren't right, don't take

  659. communion. That was the way it used to

  660. be. And I would watch these wonderful

  661. saints walk in and they would see that

  662. communion table and their faces would

  663. drop.

  664. Because what they saw in that was

  665. judgment.

  666. Not the forgiveness of sins.

  667. It was heartbreaking.

  668. Pastorally it destroys.

  669. We need these texts and we need to read

  670. them for so we have a better helmet of

  671. salvation to never let you go. Do you

  672. know what that means? There's a reason

  673. why he might want to, but he never will.

  674. Because he you will do things

  675. that even anger him or more grieve him

  676. likely.

  677. But he says that's my will cuz he's

  678. love.

  679. So what is the will of God on a positive

  680. note? I love this quote by Karl Bart.

  681. It's from the humanity of God, a book

  682. you should read.

  683. God wants man to be his creature.

  684. And I want you to list this as this is

  685. what he wants you to be.

  686. God wants man to be his creature.

  687. Furthermore, he wants him to be his

  688. partner.

  689. There is a causa dei

  690. in the world. God wants light, not

  691. darkness. He wants cosmos, not chaos. He

  692. wants peace, not disorder. He wants man

  693. to administer and receive justice rather

  694. than inflict and to suffer injustice.

  695. He wants man to live according to the

  696. spirit

  697. rather than according to the flesh.

  698. He wants man bound and pledged to him

  699. rather than any other authority.

  700. He wants man to live and not to die.

  701. Because he wills these things, he God is

  702. Lord,

  703. shepherd, and redeemer of man,

  704. who is in who in his holiness and mercy

  705. meets his creature,

  706. who judges and forgives, rejects and

  707. receives, condemns and saves. That's our

  708. God.

  709. That's what he wants for you.

  710. And he's the God of heaven and earth.

  711. There's no one above him. Satan has

  712. nothing on him. So, you don't think the

  713. God that has all power can get you

  714. there?

  715. I will let none

  716. slip from my fingers.

  717. And guess who gets to come, by the way?

  718. Whosoever.

  719. That's the people who get to come.

  720. No, I don't believe in a limited

  721. atonement.

  722. I believe he died for the cosmos.

  723. And here's the mystery that you can't

  724. come without calling him, but then he

  725. says, "Come and come to him."

  726. Here's the mystery you're going to have

  727. to deal with. The will of God is that he

  728. will call you,

  729. but also he's saying to you, come to

  730. him.

  731. And you're going to have to do that,

  732. deal with that. God is sovereign and

  733. humans have responsibility. I don't know

  734. how to figure it out. By the way, if

  735. somebody tells you they do, they're

  736. lying.

  737. John's gospel, right in this verse,

  738. has the call for people to come,

  739. believe, and then tells them, well,

  740. God's in response to the whole thing.

  741. Right in this verse, and he seems

  742. comfortable with it.

  743. But here's the truth, folks, that's so

  744. incredible this God. God's will is to do

  745. this, and he's never going to turn

  746. anyone aside, and anyone can come.

  747. It doesn't matter your background, it

  748. doesn't matter your bloodline, it

  749. doesn't matter anything about you.

  750. Anyone can come, and anyone can come

  751. back.

  752. Anyone can come.

  753. If you're feeling distance, anyone can

  754. come back.

  755. Anyone can turn around. It's called

  756. repent.

  757. But you won't repent to a God you think

  758. is mad and angry

  759. and a judge. You only repent to some God

  760. like this. Do you know how I know? Cuz

  761. in Romans it says,

  762. kindness and kindness leads to

  763. repentance.

  764. Alister Begg, can't get much more of a

  765. Calvinist than this guy, and he says,

  766. every human being without any exception

  767. whatsoever is entitled to come to Christ

  768. and trust him as savior.

  769. Anyone.

  770. It is the most open religion, too.

  771. And the funny thing is,

  772. whether we like it or not, they don't

  773. have to do the religious things we tell

  774. them they have to do.

  775. They have to do those after, cuz we like

  776. to do them.

  777. But I've met so many people who have

  778. encountered Jesus Christ and guess what?

  779. They hadn't even been baptized.

  780. They didn't even know about the

  781. sovereignty of God.

  782. They didn't know the four spiritual

  783. laws.

  784. They didn't even speak in tongues.

  785. They didn't know who

  786. Barth or Luther or Calvin. And yet they

  787. came to the Lord.

  788. Cuz he called them.

  789. Anyone can come.

  790. And if anyone can come, that means

  791. anyone may come.

  792. And this is why we're called

  793. to go out and share.

  794. This is why he's given us that mandate

  795. to be unafraid to go and tell people

  796. around us that there's a God whose will

  797. is to love you, to save you, and give

  798. you eternal life.

  799. Hm.

  800. So what is this eternal life?

  801. Eternal life for a lot of people

  802. is kind of misunderstood.

  803. Many years ago, when I was a new

  804. Christian,

  805. I had heard that eternal life was going

  806. to heaven when you died. Did anybody

  807. ever hear that?

  808. And heaven, as far as I could tell, was

  809. up in the clouds.

  810. And you kind of had no body, and you

  811. kind of floated off into this body, and

  812. then you got a I don't know how without

  813. a body this happened, but you got a

  814. harp.

  815. Which really troubled me cuz I'd heard

  816. the harp, and it was not my favorite

  817. instrument.

  818. So I was told if you believed in Jesus,

  819. you go to heaven when you die, and if

  820. you

  821. don't believe in Jesus, well, you go to

  822. the other place, the escalator down.

  823. And it looked a lot like medieval

  824. Catholicism, and I didn't want to go

  825. there, so I decided I want to go

  826. up.

  827. What a shock it was to when I learned

  828. that biblical promise is nothing like

  829. that.

  830. The biblical promise is one thing.

  831. That one day Jesus is going to return.

  832. Do we all agree with that?

  833. And he's going to raise the dead.

  834. Well, there's going to be raising the

  835. dead.

  836. That's one assumption right there.

  837. There's bodies to be raised.

  838. Do you hear what I'm saying?

  839. When Jesus rises from the dead, is he a

  840. ghost?

  841. He's got a body.

  842. And then he walks around, and as this

  843. resurrected being he can eat, right?

  844. He also can walk in rooms that are

  845. locked, so something else is going on

  846. there.

  847. They can talk to him.

  848. They can engage and love with him.

  849. Whatever this resurrection life is,

  850. there's continuity.

  851. I have a

  852. a promise for you, my friends.

  853. On that day when he returns, you will

  854. not be less bodily.

  855. You will be resurrected from the dead.

  856. Now, then I had all kinds of these

  857. questions.

  858. Well, okay, if I have bodies raised from

  859. the dead, where is everybody going to

  860. live on Earth?

  861. And this has troubled me because I

  862. started to understand that's exactly

  863. what anastasis means, raised from the

  864. dead.

  865. And then Rick Watts, and it was one of

  866. the greatest gifts at Regent College,

  867. the prof would come up to you. You could

  868. tell I was wrestling with this.

  869. I mean, floating off into the

  870. netherworld made sense, you know,

  871. Neverland.

  872. But actually resurrection in this world,

  873. why would I even want that? This world

  874. sucks.

  875. And Rick came to me and he said, "Emery,

  876. what's bothering you?"

  877. And I told him exactly what I told you.

  878. And he smiled and he said, "It's not

  879. going to be anything like this even

  880. though

  881. we will have bodies."

  882. You see that day

  883. when resurrection comes

  884. all of those hopes that are squished

  885. all of those things you've longed for

  886. that seem like they've been lost forever

  887. all of those relationships that have

  888. fallen

  889. and seemingly are destroyed forever

  890. are made new.

  891. Sin no longer has a place.

  892. You'll be in a place as he said he

  893. looked at the flowers outside Regent and

  894. he said, "Do you see those flowers?"

  895. And he goes, "I imagine in the

  896. resurrection they will be renewed and

  897. they will be so beautiful we could stare

  898. at them for days."

  899. Whatever the resurrection is, it says

  900. Paul says we are no mind can grasp

  901. no heart can get what's coming for us.

  902. So when you hear the promise of

  903. resurrection life, it's not just like

  904. this life moving on. It is every promise

  905. that God has given will be fulfilled and

  906. you will see people that you've lost.

  907. And you will be

  908. in a world

  909. where your life, that part of you who's

  910. always wanted to be there will be

  911. fulfilled.

  912. And those things you've grown about

  913. yourself will be gone and you will be a

  914. different person.

  915. And it's his will

  916. that you get that.

  917. And he wants you to live now with that

  918. truth

  919. towards that.

  920. Justice, love,

  921. mercy. That's all it's going to be

  922. about.

  923. And the most incredible thing

  924. in that world is we will have Jesus.

  925. We will talk to him.

  926. We will dine with him.

  927. Tim Keller said, "But resurrection is

  928. not just consolation, it is restoration.

  929. We get it all back.

  930. The love,

  931. the loved ones,

  932. the goods,

  933. the beauties of this life,

  934. but in new unimaginable degrees of glory

  935. and joy

  936. and strength."

  937. The truth is, folks, we do live in a

  938. broken world right now, and we're

  939. broken.

  940. And the good news of this, this is the

  941. assurance we need to hear.

  942. My will

  943. is that I'm never going to lose any of

  944. you. That none of you will get slip out

  945. of my hand.

  946. My will

  947. is that I'm going to renew all things.

  948. And when I renew all things, my will is

  949. that you're there.

  950. So, the next time you hear in that voice

  951. that God doesn't care for you or you've

  952. blown it too much,

  953. read this text.

  954. Speak it and believe it.

  955. And then say, "Get behind me, Satan."

  956. Cuz he's a liar and he's a thief.

  957. And he's out to destroy your peace and

  958. joy.

  959. And then walk out of there with the Holy

  960. Spirit and have joy no matter what your

  961. circumstances because this is your end,

  962. guaranteed.

  963. I don't envy Ricky Gervais.

  964. I pity him.

  965. For his unbelief has no life.

  966. And it certainly has no future life.

  967. And if somebody here doesn't believe or

  968. is watching online,

  969. let me tell you right now,

  970. you don't have to do anything else

  971. but come to Jesus.

  972. Believe in Jesus.

  973. And his will will be done.

  974. And you will be there at eternity.

  975. Let's pray.

  976. Heavenly Father, you are so good to us.

  977. It's unbelievable that we can put our

  978. trust in a God so worthy.

  979. A God who promises and sealed his

  980. promises on a cross.

  981. On death on a cross that we would be

  982. forgiven.

  983. Who rose so that we would rise one day.

  984. Pour your Holy Spirit, protect us, help

  985. us to have the shields of salvation on

  986. our heads.

  987. Help us to know the truth of what your

  988. will is cuz you said it clearly here.

  989. This is the promise.

  990. And for anyone doubting here, we ask

  991. your Holy Spirit to pour over them.

  992. Pour over them and remind them

  993. that they are children of God and their

  994. destiny is not death.

  995. Their destiny is resurrection life in

  996. your kingdom.

  997. Amen.
