  1. The Old Testament reading is Isaiah

    Isaiah 12 chapter mention

  2. chapter 12.

  3. >> [clears throat]

  4. >> You will say in that day, "I will give

  5. thanks to you, O Lord,

  6. for though you were angry with me, your

  7. anger turned away, that you might

  8. comfort me."

  9. Behold, God is my salvation. I will

  10. trust and not be afraid.

  11. For the Lord God is my strength and my

  12. song, and he has become my salvation.

  13. With joy, you will draw water from the

  14. wells of salvation, and you will say in

  15. that day,

  16. "Give thanks to the Lord, call upon his

  17. name,

  18. make known his deeds among the peoples,

  19. proclaim that his name is exalted.

  20. Sing praises to the Lord, for he has

  21. done gloriously.

  22. Let this be made known in all the earth.

  23. Shout and sing for joy, O inhabitant of

  24. Zion,

  25. for great in your midst is the Holy One

  26. of Israel."

  27. The New Testament reading is John

    John 7:14–24

  28. chapter 7 verses 14 through 24.

  29. About the middle of the feast, Jesus

  30. went up into the temple and began

  31. teaching.

  32. The Jews, therefore, marveled, saying,

  33. "How is it that this man has learning

  34. when he has never studied?"

  35. >> [clears throat]

  36. >> So, Jesus answered them,

  37. "My teaching is not mine, but his who

  38. sent me.

  39. If anyone's will is to do God's will, he

  40. will know whether the teaching is from

  41. God or whether I am speaking on my own

  42. authority.

  43. The one who speaks on his own authority

  44. seeks his own glory.

  45. But the one who seeks the glory of him

  46. who sent him

  47. is true, and in him there is no

  48. falsehood.

  49. Has not Moses given you the law?

  50. Yet none of you keeps the law. Why do

  51. you seek to kill me?

  52. The crowd answered, "You have a demon.

  53. Who is seeking to kill you?"

  54. Jesus answered them, "I did one work,

  55. and you all marvel at it. Moses gave you

  56. circumcision, not that it is from Moses,

  57. but from the fathers,

  58. and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath.

  59. If on the Sabbath a man receives

  60. circumcision, so that the law of Moses

  61. may not be broken,

  62. are you angry with me because on the

  63. Sabbath I made a man's whole body well?

  64. Do not judge by appearances, but judge

  65. with right judgment."

  66. This is the word of the Lord.

  67. >> Thanks be to God.

  68. Religious death sounds like an oxymoron

  69. to a lot of people.

  70. But what if I told you that religion

  71. kills more people than anything else?

  72. It's true.

  73. And that unfortunately the Christian

  74. religion

  75. properly mis- properly understood has

  76. destroyed many people.

  77. People say, "Well, that's crazy, Emery.

  78. That's We have the right religion." No,

  79. we have the right God.

  80. There's a difference.

  81. Religion is human beings

  82. attempt

  83. to worship the God they think exists.

  84. And sometimes

  85. that is not what

  86. God is like at all.

  87. And you see it all the time in

  88. Christianity. And to deny it

  89. is foolish.

  90. So, I'm going to give you an example.

  91. When I came here,

  92. there were those signs. They weren't

  93. quite as pretty as that.

  94. And they were all over our main doors.

  95. Do you remember that, Ross? Is Ross

  96. here?

  97. Remember that?

  98. No.

  99. You do?

  100. Now, I was new. I came in November of

  101. that year and I saw these signs and like

  102. so many things you see I saw all kinds

  103. of things that if you attended

  104. regularly, here's a reality when you

  105. attend somewhere regularly, you stop

  106. noticing things.

  107. Okay? And so, I came in I was new and I

  108. noticed these things. They stood out.

  109. And it just there were a few things. I

  110. won't mention which one, but this one

  111. stood out as another example of jeez, um

  112. I didn't feel very welcomed.

  113. Do you know what I mean?

  114. Well, I wouldn't have said anything cuz

  115. I had a rule that I was going to try and

  116. find the bathrooms first before I made

  117. changes. And I hadn't even found the

  118. bathrooms.

  119. But that Christmas Eve an event happened

  120. that forced my hand.

  121. Sitting right over there. I came up

  122. here. I was getting ready

  123. and two young folks came in. They were

  124. children of somebody in the church.

  125. And they were uh

  126. carrying Tim Hortons cups.

  127. Yes, I wish somebody had the scary music

  128. right now.

  129. And a lady who was sitting somewhere

  130. who I won't mention cuz I don't remember

  131. which one it was.

  132. Came down

  133. and walked up to these young chil- kids

  134. and

  135. said something. I couldn't see what they

  136. were being said and these kids abruptly

  137. came out, went outside

  138. and came back in without their cups.

  139. Oh, okay. So,

  140. afterwards,

  141. I V-lined to them because this is in the

  142. day where

  143. if you could get a young person, you

  144. tied them down in this place cuz there

  145. were no young people.

  146. And I asked them what had happened

  147. and with anger in their voice they said,

  148. "We were told that we were disrespectful

  149. of God's sanctuary

  150. because we had brought

  151. tea and coffee into the church."

  152. Well,

  153. that made me angry.

  154. I waited until the next Sunday

  155. that I was on

  156. and I made sure

  157. that I did this.

  158. I got right up to the front and

  159. >> [clears throat]

  160. >> I guess and I went

  161. Why would I do that?

  162. Because we made a choice

  163. to put a rule of law

  164. over human beings.

  165. We had made a choice that our beloved

  166. sanctuary

  167. was more important than the souls of two

  168. young kids

  169. who came to hear God's word.

  170. I'm going to tell you the truth. I'm not

  171. going to leave this up here cuz it's

  172. tempting.

  173. Um

  174. This happens all the time.

  175. We make choices, we make rules, we put

  176. values and we forget the whole purpose

  177. of what God is doing this for.

  178. Human beings.

  179. And sometimes we put these rules and we

  180. destroy human beings. That young couple

  181. never came back and I don't blame them.

  182. And we forget why and what is important.

  183. And that's exactly what Jesus is dealing

  184. with today.

  185. Let's pray.

  186. Heavenly Father, we thank you

  187. that you've given us Jesus and you can

  188. show us this stuff.

  189. We pray by your grace that you will open

  190. our eyes and our ears.

  191. And that we

  192. will leave this place different.

  193. And may the words of my mouth and the

  194. meditation of my heart be pleasing unto

  195. you.

  196. The story we're about to talk about is

  197. happening in the middle of a festival.

  198. Jason talked about it a bit on the last

  199. Sunday. The Festival of Booths or Feast

  200. of Tabernacles. A little bit of history

  201. there and there's a little bit of a

  202. booth where they would have had it. It's

  203. the main emphasis was water,

  204. light,

  205. and feast because it was the end of the

  206. the season where they were to bringing

  207. in the the all of the all of the uh

  208. grain, all of their

  209. everything that mattered to them. This

  210. was it. This was the harvest festival.

  211. They brought in the harvest.

  212. And they had this harvest festival, but

  213. it had symbolic meaning to their own

  214. story. That's what's important.

  215. The reason they had water wasn't just

  216. cuz they God provides water and it's

  217. important for grain,

  218. but because they had remembered from the

  219. Exodus story that God had brought water

  220. out of a rock.

  221. Water provided for the people

  222. practically. Thus, the bowls of water.

  223. And the lights, why did they have the

  224. lights and why did they have this and it

  225. glow Apparently, Jerusalem would just

  226. light up. It was beautiful.

  227. Because God led them by the tower of

  228. fire, the light, and he led them

  229. through.

  230. And this was all about God's presence on

  231. earth, okay? This is God's presence

  232. amongst his people and they celebrated

  233. it as it was the feast. But they had one

  234. other element of this feast

  235. that added to it even more and it was

  236. that they reminded them that God one day

  237. would give everyone an eschatological

  238. feast once he comes back and sets things

  239. into order.

  240. So this was a very politically

  241. uh

  242. charged

  243. celebration when Jesus came.

  244. Because they thought the Moses figure

  245. would come, the David figure who would

  246. deliver them and then we'd host this

  247. feast. And they were waiting for him.

  248. Would he come on Passover? Would he come

  249. on the Feast of Tabernacles?

  250. Well, this time of Jesus, he's living in

  251. a revolutionary time in the world.

  252. And he's sitting there and they're all

  253. waiting and John's brother or Jesus'

  254. brothers and they were his brothers,

  255. sorry my Catholic friends, they weren't

  256. cousins. Um

  257. No no ex-Catholics here getting that

  258. joke, okay.

  259. Um

  260. They even cuz they think like the world,

  261. let's get our little brother out there,

  262. right? Before and Jesus Jason was

  263. saying, let's get him out so that hey,

  264. we can sell him as a political figure.

  265. But Jesus says, "No, my time is not

  266. come. I will not be coming to your

  267. feast."

  268. He comes to this feast though. Well, why

  269. not your feast? Because the feast they

  270. think they want is not the real feast.

  271. They want the feast of the Messianic

  272. political figure. Jesus comes and shows

  273. him the God of the feast.

  274. Now, the feast also had one thing it

  275. said

  276. the feast only exist, the rabbi said, if

  277. the I Am is there, the presence of God.

  278. Without the I Am, there is no feast.

  279. And they always waited for the I Am to

  280. come. And the other thing I will say

  281. about it, cuz we can be a little bit um

  282. curmudgeony in the Presbyterian church,

  283. if you know anything about us,

  284. is this was a party.

  285. Like they partied. Like God provided.

  286. They actually had a pretty awesome

  287. dancing, singing, they raised their

  288. hands.

  289. I don't know.

  290. >> [panting and sighs]

  291. >> Certainly were no Presbyterian elders

  292. there.

  293. Into this world,

  294. we hear the story.

  295. About at the middle of the feast, Jesus

  296. went up into the temple and began

  297. teaching.

  298. The Jews therefore marveled, "How is it

  299. that this man has I'd like this The

  300. Greek word is words, grammaton or

  301. something,

  302. when he has never studied?" How does he

  303. have these words? He shouldn't have

  304. them. You have to study to know things.

  305. And in the ancient world, just like

  306. today, we tend to worship people who

  307. studied under certain people.

  308. And the way they would come across and

  309. debate this, they would always quote the

  310. guy that their hero was. So, they'd be

  311. like, "Rabbi Shammai said this, thus I

  312. say this." Or, "Rabbi Hillel said this."

  313. That's what they said. They were

  314. building up on these stories and

  315. history. They were read, and they wanted

  316. to be seen as having read, because it

  317. gave them status.

  318. Having spent eight years post-graduate

  319. school, I can tell you that doesn't

  320. change.

  321. Educated people like to remind you who

  322. they've read.

  323. So, Jesus answered them,

  324. "And how is it they say that this man is

  325. learning when he has never studied? This

  326. could not happen." And Jesus answered

  327. them, "The teaching is not mine." See,

  328. they're saying it's his teaching, cuz

  329. they only do their own teaching. But

  330. what Jesus says is it's not actually my

  331. teaching.

  332. And I do have a rabbi. He's the one who

  333. sent me. You happen to call him the I

  334. Am.

  335. Father.

  336. And I'm not going to quote him because

  337. he created everything.

  338. He's not one of the others around.

  339. If anyone's will is to do God's will,

  340. Jesus says in this world,

  341. he will know whether the teaching is

  342. from God or if I am speaking of my own

  343. authority.

  344. I want you to read that closely. What he

  345. just said is if you really want to

  346. follow God, you'll be listening to me.

  347. What does that say about who he thinks

  348. he is?

  349. Do you imagine how offensive this was to

  350. a first-century Second Temple Jew who

  351. are questioning him?

  352. And he says basically, he just keeps

  353. doubling down. I am more curious. People

  354. say, "Oh, why did Jesus have to die?" My

  355. point is, I'm shocked he didn't die

  356. sooner.

  357. I mean, he just doesn't let off the gas.

  358. And he goes, "The one who speaks on his

  359. own authority seeks his own glory." He's

  360. looking right at them.

  361. They give their pronouncements out of

  362. their own wisdom and their learning

  363. they've had.

  364. But why do they do it? The same reason

  365. we do it when we sit in these education

  366. seminars and they tell us their profound

  367. new idea.

  368. Because guess what? Whether you like it

  369. or not, people have egos.

  370. Did you know that?

  371. I know it's

  372. And you get up in the education system

  373. and you get around guys with these these

  374. three letters.

  375. I I like to call it piled high and deep.

  376. PhD.

  377. And I can assure you I know these people

  378. because I rub shoulders with them. And

  379. they have all profound ideas and they

  380. want you to know them. Why? So that you

  381. grow in Jesus Christ? No, so that you

  382. grow in Bob Jimbo

  383. and his wisdom and knowledge.

  384. The one who speaks on his own authority

  385. seeks his own glory. But the one who

  386. seeks the glory of him who has sent him

  387. is true and in him there is no

  388. falsehood. Who is he speaking of?

  389. Himself.

  390. He's not there trying to wait woo them.

  391. He's not there saying, "Look how well I

  392. know Hillel or or or Shammai or all the

  393. other ones Gamaliel."

  394. He's there saying in front of them,

  395. "I'm telling you what I know cuz I seek

  396. the Lord and if you want the Lord,

  397. you've got to go after this, too."

  398. Now, I want to remind you of something

  399. right now, just before we get to the

  400. next part.

  401. The Jews believed

  402. that following the law was the only way

  403. God would forgive them. Okay?

  404. And the Jews believed cuz the Pharisees

  405. told them that if they followed the law,

  406. the Torah, for seven straight days, God

  407. would have to send his deliverer down

  408. and he would deliver them

  409. and the Romans would be wiped out and we

  410. would get

  411. we'd be the

  412. big cheese on the campus.

  413. So, you got to remember that. So, when

  414. they were fighting people doing the law

  415. or not doing the law, they didn't care

  416. about them going to heaven or not.

  417. Why they were concerned about the law

  418. being done is because if you didn't do

  419. the law and you're part of the nation,

  420. you are stopping God from sending our

  421. deliverer. Do you see that?

  422. So, it was considered

  423. uh

  424. treasonous to not do the law. Do you see

  425. what I mean? It was very serious.

  426. That's why you see the hatred of the tax

  427. collectors and sinners in the Bible.

  428. It's not just cuz they think I'm better

  429. than you cuz I do more moral things.

  430. They hate them because they do bad

  431. things all the time and they're stopping

  432. from this revolution.

  433. I want you to remember that cuz we're

  434. now going to get into the law.

  435. Okay.

  436. And Jesus says, "Have not Moses given

  437. you the law, yet none of you keeps the

  438. law." Now, what did I just say?

  439. That if you don't keep the law, you're

  440. what?

  441. Treasonous.

  442. What did Jesus just say to them? I'm

  443. trying to get you to understand how

  444. offensive he is.

  445. Let me say that again. Remember, if you

  446. don't keep the law, you're treasonous.

  447. Has not Moses given you the law, yet

  448. none of you keeps the law. What did he

  449. just say to them?

  450. You're a bunch of Benedict Arnolds.

  451. Woo.

  452. And then he says, "Why do you seek to

  453. kill me?" Well, of course, what's the

  454. one one of the first laws? Thou shall

  455. not

  456. murder.

  457. Well, the crowd is now getting upset.

  458. They answered, "You have a demon."

  459. That's always their answer to Jesus

  460. wisdom, isn't it?

  461. They can't beat him in a regular

  462. argument. It's kind of like if you're in

  463. a debate with somebody and and you know

  464. you've won when they said, "Yeah, well,

  465. you got a big chin." Like it it's

  466. they're not arguing the issue. They

  467. always just bring in a non sequitur.

  468. You have a demon who is seeking to kill

  469. you.

  470. They know.

  471. And Jesus answered them,

  472. "I did one work and you all marveled at

  473. it." What do you think that work was? Do

  474. you remember?

  475. He did one work about two chapters

  476. before and he I'll give you a hint, he

  477. did it on the Sabbath.

  478. Healed the man in the pool of Siloam.

  479. And it says here, "I did one work and

  480. you all" and here's where you have to

  481. have Greek to see this. The marvel here

  482. is a the marveling in the sense of

  483. sneering marvel, marvel that you would

  484. dare do that.

  485. It wasn't marvel like, "Oh man, you're

  486. an amazing thing." They were sneering at

  487. this. They marveled at the fact that he

  488. would even dare do that.

  489. Moses, Jesus goes on. Remember they

  490. wanted to talk about Moses, they want to

  491. talk about obeying the law, that's the

  492. key. And you have to do it right and he

  493. healed on the Sabbath a man, so he must

  494. have been wrong, remember?

  495. Well, Jesus goes back and he throws

  496. something at them.

  497. He says, "Moses gave you circumcision

  498. which he didn't actually, but he kind of

  499. codified it. Not that it was from Moses,

  500. but it came from the Father. So, it

  501. actually even predates

  502. the law.

  503. And you circumcise a man on the Sabbath.

  504. Now, if you circumcise a man on the

  505. Sabbath, what are you doing on the

  506. Sabbath?

  507. Working, right? So, the very thing that

  508. they're attacking him for, they do

  509. themselves. If you are born on a certain

  510. day, 8 days later

  511. after the birth of that child, you have

  512. to do circumcision. That's the law. So,

  513. if that day lands on the Sabbath, you

  514. have to clip off the foreskin. It's

  515. that's that's the rules.

  516. But the problem is, it's on the Sabbath,

  517. we shouldn't be working. So, what they

  518. said, and there was this big argument at

  519. the time amongst the rabbis, should we

  520. do this or should we not? And but

  521. because the baby, when the for that the

  522. symbolism of the removal of the foreskin

  523. is you're being cut off from the world,

  524. you're becoming part of the covenant

  525. people of God and you're being made

  526. whole covenantally.

  527. That's the purpose. And so they said,

  528. "Well, that's more important than

  529. whether we work on a Sabbath. So this

  530. rule, by making this child somewhat

  531. better because of the circumcision, at

  532. least that member of his body is now

  533. sanctified."

  534. That's why we can do it on the Sabbath.

  535. Do you understand so far? Does that make

  536. sense?

  537. It's a Jewish argument. I'm not going to

  538. try and

  539. Anyways, that's why you go to small

  540. groups cuz then you can talk about it.

  541. "If on the Sabbath man receives

  542. circumcision so that the law of Moses

  543. may not be broken, are you angry with

  544. me? So you let these people do this and

  545. cut off the foreskin on a Sabbath

  546. because you want to see a small part of

  547. this person become purified and become

  548. part of the covenant people of Israel,

  549. yet now you're mad at me because I

  550. healed a whole body."

  551. And when you heal a body in their world,

  552. that meant they were fully sanctified,

  553. not just one little part.

  554. You see Jesus' point?

  555. You're mad at me for healing someone on

  556. the Sabbath. You do this little thing on

  557. the Sabbath cuz you think it's all

  558. right. I'm actually healing the whole

  559. body. You know why they don't care about

  560. what the Jesus healing?

  561. Because they didn't care about the guy.

  562. That's the one thing religion does is it

  563. will put

  564. the emphasis on the law over the human

  565. being who's suffering under it.

  566. That is the key problem with Torah and

  567. how we use it.

  568. So he's saying, "I made this whole body

  569. well and you're mad I I it on the

  570. Sabbath. You do this little bit for this

  571. little baby to become part of the

  572. community and you're fine with that.

  573. Do you see he's already pointed out

  574. they're nuts.

  575. But they're nuts

  576. because they worship their rules as they

  577. understand them.

  578. And they don't put people

  579. over the law.

  580. Well, Jesus gives this one thing.

  581. Do not judge by appearances. By the way,

  582. the the idol in our culture right now is

  583. do not judge. Some people think that's

  584. the only line in the Bible.

  585. Let me assure you it's not.

  586. That is because we worship self and we

  587. don't want anyone telling us what we

  588. shouldn't do unless we'd like to do

  589. whatever we want. So, how dare you judge

  590. me? You know what I mean?

  591. That actual section where it says do not

  592. judge, he's talking about eschatological

  593. judge. The one thing we're not allowed

  594. to do just you know is say look down the

  595. pew and say I know Bobby

  596. I don't know if there's a Bobby here. Uh

  597. Fernando, we don't have no Fernandos. Um

  598. I know Fernando's going to hell.

  599. That's what it's talking about. But

  600. listen to what Jesus says, do not judge

  601. by appearances but judge with right

  602. judgment. It's not that there isn't a

  603. judgment or a discernment to do, it is

  604. discern

  605. with right discernment because if you

  606. discern with wrong discernment, you kill

  607. people.

  608. All right?

  609. Has that made sense?

  610. I mean, I tried my best but

  611. I didn't write it either.

  612. So, there's a few things then that I

  613. think we have to take out of this.

  614. And I hope this makes sense.

  615. First of all, should we speak for

  616. ourselves?

  617. Should we speak on our own ideas and and

  618. and and and it should that be our main

  619. emphasis to come up with a new religious

  620. and symbolic ideas. Get Should we sit

  621. around? I've been in Bible studies.

  622. Anybody been in the Bible studies?

  623. And and and they and and they take a

  624. text

  625. and then you read it and they go, "What

  626. does that text mean to you?"

  627. Ever been in those?

  628. And you hear some of the most

  629. interesting interpretations, for sure.

  630. But it's always on the self,

  631. you know?

  632. There's actually a reason

  633. I don't preach topical sermons. Do you

  634. know what I mean by that?

  635. >> [clears throat]

  636. >> Topical sermons is you get a topic, you

  637. speak about it maybe

  638. seven steps to a happy marriage or how

  639. to beat your kids, I don't know,

  640. whatever one it is.

  641. And what you do is you come up with some

  642. ideas and you often come up with some

  643. ideas and you can just as likely get

  644. them out of a psychology book as

  645. anywhere else. And I did this for years

  646. when I was in the Vineyard. I don't know

  647. but you know this about me. I preached

  648. for 10 years before I got ordained.

  649. And I'm so glad there were so few people

  650. there cuz they were terrible sermons.

  651. Because what I was doing is I was giving

  652. my ideas

  653. and they reeked of the culture.

  654. The truth be known

  655. and this was what wonderful and you see

  656. that I go through the text

  657. is cuz it's not my job to give you my

  658. opinion.

  659. It's my job

  660. to speak about the one

  661. who shows us God.

  662. And that can only be done as we go

  663. through these texts.

  664. I've seen so many people

  665. come up in churches. I saw somebody in

  666. our prayers of the people and they

  667. talked about how their politics was what

  668. they wanted to emphasize. I remember one

  669. guy, Ross will remember this. He came up

  670. to do a scripture reading and started

  671. reading his poems.

  672. Remember that?

  673. When the preacher comes up, we should

  674. take into account what Jesus says.

  675. When we speak to ourselves, we do not

  676. speak for God.

  677. I love this quote.

  678. Self-seekers are self-speakers.

  679. And in our world, it's only getting

  680. worse. How many of you talked about an

  681. issue and they go, "My truth."

  682. Who cares?

  683. You know, all of these people that say,

  684. "My truth." I'm like, "Boy, your truth

  685. sucks."

  686. Or they I remember for a while there in

  687. the charismatic church, and this is

  688. years ago, guys would come up and they

  689. had their sermon. It became very, very

  690. holy to in the middle of your sermon.

  691. You're just getting up there and and

  692. then you grab this thing and go, "God

  693. told me I'm just supposed to talk about

  694. what's on my heart right now." And they

  695. would throw their sermon.

  696. "God inspired me." And I my friend

  697. leaned over to me after one particularly

  698. bad one and he says, "Man, God is

  699. uninspiring."

  700. Yeah, he was talking about his own

  701. stuff.

  702. We have this word given to us and Jesus

  703. is not leaving the story of God.

  704. And we should not be leaving that

  705. either.

  706. Okay?

  707. But why do we do it?

  708. Because we like

  709. the attention.

  710. And all of us can do this.

  711. We speak about our wisdom and our

  712. insights, our personal ones.

  713. Because we like when someone comes up

  714. and go, "You're a genius."

  715. Mhm.

  716. The great Karl Bart

  717. In short, the glory which a man may

  718. ascribe to himself or allow others to

  719. ascribe to him

  720. has nothing whatsoever to do with the

  721. glory of Jesus.

  722. Yikes.

  723. But we do it.

  724. And we say all kinds of things that

  725. aren't in scripture or are at best your

  726. interpretation.

  727. And we tell people stories often from

  728. the pulpit and then we wonder why the

  729. church becomes less healthy.

  730. It might become more full

  731. especially if you're telling them what

  732. they want to hear.

  733. But it's not what Jesus says. Have you

  734. just noticed how Jesus kind of just

  735. offends there?

  736. If you're going to a church where you're

  737. never feeling uncomfortable by Jesus'

  738. words, you may wonder about the church.

  739. He says some uncomfortable stuff.

  740. The reason we get there is this thing

  741. called religious idolatry.

  742. And put simply, religious idolatry is

  743. once we have a set of ideas about God

  744. and then we begin to create that God in

  745. our [music] image.

  746. We may call that God Jesus. Maybe we

  747. call that God Allah. It doesn't matter.

  748. Every tradition has idolatry.

  749. But what we do is we put our own

  750. emphasis over the revelation of God

  751. gifted to us. We emphasize things that

  752. God never even emphasized.

  753. Now I have worked hard. I have read

  754. these scriptures and I have yet to see

  755. no tea and coffee in the sanctuary.

  756. I haven't.

  757. I looked.

  758. Maybe it's in the back of the book

  759. somewhere. I don't know.

  760. I've never once seen that we should

  761. protect our sanctuary as a sanctified

  762. place

  763. and kick the unbeliever out.

  764. Who would dare cross

  765. such a holy place?

  766. See, religious idolatry comes from us

  767. because it comes from our arrogance.

  768. You see, ultimately, when you start to

  769. go to the rules, the rules are the rules

  770. that the inside team have and the

  771. outside team doesn't.

  772. And what it does is it makes you holier

  773. because you're doing the right works.

  774. You're doing the right thing. You're

  775. making God happy.

  776. They're notable things that your friends

  777. who are doing the same things can say,

  778. "Bravo."

  779. And it can also delineate you from

  780. someone else.

  781. My pastor, who was a Southern Baptist

  782. pastor named Beaver Brooks, that's true

  783. story.

  784. When I was in university, said when he

  785. was in school down in the South, if you

  786. were wearing jeans, you were an

  787. unbeliever.

  788. If you were wearing khakis, you were a

  789. seeker. And if you were wearing a

  790. three-points point

  791. suit,

  792. you were a true believer.

  793. You imagine that?

  794. These rules are everywhere.

  795. Martin Luther said, "Not only the

  796. adoration of images as idolatry, but

  797. also trust in one's own righteous works

  798. and merits and putting confidence in

  799. riches and power at

  800. as the latter is the commonest that is

  801. also the most noxious."

  802. You know, the first hint you have

  803. that religious idolatry's taken over

  804. your church is when you can look at

  805. people looking down at each other cuz

  806. they

  807. brought the wrong thing in the wrong

  808. place.

  809. Like coffee and tea into a sanctuary.

  810. You see because Jesus says we need to

  811. judge rightly.

  812. Right?

  813. So, what does it mean to judge rightly?

  814. People keeping.

  815. There's one thing you need to know about

  816. Jesus.

  817. That every time he went against the law,

  818. he didn't do it just to snoot and to PO

  819. I should be careful with my words here.

  820. To make angry

  821. the Pharisees.

  822. He did it because he cared about them

  823. and the people under them.

  824. And he knew what was happening was

  825. destroying them.

  826. This idea, when you think about it, that

  827. there was a young man who had for 30

  828. years had been a lame, could not be part

  829. of the part of Israel, and Jesus comes

  830. and heals him, and they're mad cuz he

  831. does it on the Sabbath.

  832. Religious idolatry.

  833. That they want to kill Jesus because he

  834. killed a man on the Sabbath.

  835. Because he dared put the person over

  836. their rules.

  837. They now want to kill him.

  838. Because that's what happens when we take

  839. the rules that we create and we

  840. pontificate about that gives us special

  841. status over others.

  842. Is we end up killing the others we're

  843. supposed to care for.

  844. Wesley Newbeggin, it follows that in

  845. their judgment upon Jesus, the Jews are

  846. under the cover of the appearance of

  847. legality in fact violating the law.

  848. He gives life, they want to kill.

  849. This is what happens and will always

  850. happen when the attempt is made to

  851. capture the revelation of God and make

  852. it a possession of man.

  853. Instead of being under the word, we

  854. control the word. Instead of being under

  855. what it says about how to treat people,

  856. we take our systems and destroy people.

  857. Jesus was hated for one reason.

  858. And my professor Rick Watts said it so

  859. well and it's why he was killed.

  860. For Jesus, Rick says, when it comes to

  861. people keeping or law keeping, too bad

  862. for the law. Notice that.

  863. Every time he's doing something where

  864. the law is not it anymore. He didn't

  865. hate the law, he created the law. But as

  866. he says to them, I created the law for

  867. people.

  868. So that we would care for people.

  869. We create laws to protect and surround

  870. ourselves and keep others out.

  871. And here's the truth.

  872. If you've been in the church for any

  873. time, you've been there.

  874. You have looked down at others and seen

  875. things

  876. that perhaps

  877. you didn't agree with. They weren't in

  878. your

  879. judgement good.

  880. So I'm going to give you a couple that

  881. are going to make you uncomfortable.

  882. Let's say

  883. you are convicted convinced Calvinist.

  884. You love covenant theology and you

  885. believe that that child should be

  886. baptized into the covenant community.

  887. And your friend down the road who's a

  888. Baptist says, "Well, we don't do that,

  889. but we're going to go and baptize my

  890. 13-year-old kid."

  891. Okay?

  892. You know you've got a religious problem

  893. if you're not willing to go.

  894. You know you've got a religious problem

  895. if you're not willing to go and

  896. celebrate that because some kid is

  897. coming into the kingdom of God.

  898. Oh, they don't do it like you?

  899. And that keeps you from celebrating?

  900. Or or or, let me use the other side.

  901. Let's say you're a devout

  902. believer's baptism.

  903. Okay? You believe that they got to be

  904. cognitively aware there, I don't know

  905. the number, age 12 or whatever it is.

  906. And that's all about baptism. We we

  907. we do other things for that. I forget

  908. what it's called.

  909. And then your friend sends you an invite

  910. and it says, "I am going to baptize my

  911. child here at Mountain View Church."

  912. If you can't come because you think that

  913. you theologically have it so figured out

  914. that you're not going to go and see

  915. that,

  916. you've missed the point.

  917. If you can't come in, even if your views

  918. are different, and celebrate that those

  919. two parents who love Jesus Christ want

  920. to bring this kid into a covenant

  921. relationship,

  922. if you can't see that and celebrate

  923. that, you've missed the point.

  924. If you come to a communion service

  925. and you think, "Well, they just do this

  926. as a symbol. They don't get it, so I'm

  927. not going to take it. You've missed the

  928. point.

  929. You should be celebrating that people of

  930. faith want to have this remembrance as

  931. they say it.

  932. And if you come into another church and

  933. they think it literally becomes the body

  934. and blood and you think you're so much

  935. better than them that you don't take it

  936. because you know better.

  937. You've missed the point.

  938. You've made the law

  939. over people.

  940. That doesn't mean you don't hold your

  941. views. I hold my views very strongly,

  942. but I'll tell you what, I hold my views

  943. in humility because as someone who has

  944. spent all those years studying this, you

  945. can't be sure of any of these, by the

  946. way.

  947. And churches that have been destroyed

  948. are those who put the coffee and tea

  949. over the human beings

  950. that are there to hear the word.

  951. I have had this thought exercise ever

  952. since then. What if, and I don't know

  953. what happened to them.

  954. This is 9 years ago.

  955. But what if

  956. they were not mentioned and they sat

  957. there and they heard something that lit

  958. into them.

  959. What if

  960. we laid down our coffee and tea Torah

  961. and they left that place and they said

  962. to their mom and dad, you know what, I

  963. felt loved.

  964. I might come back.

  965. Maybe 5 years down the line, what if

  966. they came back when their life was in

  967. crisis and they remembered that moment

  968. of love.

  969. And we killed it.

  970. >> [snorts]

  971. >> Anybody uncomfortable yet?

  972. >> [snorts]

  973. >> Cuz I'm really uncomfortable.

  974. The truth is if we want God,

  975. we will follow Jesus.

  976. That's what he just said.

  977. And if we're going to follow Jesus,

  978. you're going to have to follow a guy who

  979. hung out with tax collectors and

  980. sinners.

  981. You're going to have to

  982. sit beside people who are prostitutes,

  983. who are divorced, who have uh

  984. two kids from two different dads.

  985. And you're going to have to treat them

  986. their your their equal.

  987. Or you're not following Jesus at all.

  988. The toughest part of following Jesus

  989. for me

  990. is myself.

  991. Anybody else?

  992. Jesus really did give himself to the

  993. Father and that's why he did these

  994. things.

  995. My problem is

  996. the Pharisee in me.

  997. The one who has my own rules.

  998. And that's why I got to go back and

  999. listen to Jesus and I want to hear

1000. sermons about Jesus, not about people's

1001. ideas cuz I want to be challenged so I

1002. don't get caught in that death trap of

  1003. rules.

1004. And I've realized in the last little

  1005. while again,

1006. that when I'm following Jesus, you know

  1007. what it means?

1008. I have to let go of all my stuff

  1009. and just trust.

1010. And it makes no sense in the world.

1011. Cuz I'd like to tell you guys something.

  1012. I'm a sinner.

  1013. I'm a big sinner.

1014. I blow it all the time.

1015. And there's no reason I should be here.

  1016. But his mercy.

  1017. Lesslie Newbigin

1018. There is no way of receiving God's

1019. revelation of himself except one which

1020. involves the abandonment of every

  1021. intellectual and spiritual security

1022. in order to come to Jesus.

  1023. At this point

1024. there is required a simplicity which

1025. must appear to the philosophers of

  1026. religion

1027. at best naive and at worst arbitrary and

  1028. even arrogant.

  1029. But the reality is

  1030. the only way

1031. that religion doesn't start to seep into

1032. us and destroy us is if we abandon

1033. ourself our religion and trust in Jesus.

1034. Now this doesn't mean we don't discern

1035. or we don't have lives

1036. and we don't have ethics.

1037. But when we have those ethics and we've

1038. abandoned ourselves and see ourselves

  1039. as sinners

1040. saved by grace. When we share those

1041. ethics with others, we will do it from

  1042. love, not from pride.

1043. When we talk to them

1044. about why there's a way to be sexual

1045. why there's a way to be integrity, to

  1046. have honor

1047. we won't do it from an arrogant place

1048. like how how great I've arrived.

1049. But from a place of saying God showed us

1050. what it means to be human.

1051. And I love you and I'm going to share it

  1052. with you.

1053. I believe there are two types of people

1054. who will walk out of church this Sunday.

  1055. Two types.

1056. And I take this right from Jesus cuz

1057. he's the one who said it.

1058. One is going to be sitting in church

1059. looking down and saying, "Thank God you

1060. didn't make me like that person.

1061. Thank God you've made me arrived. You've

  1062. held me.

1063. And don't worry, God. I've got it all

  1064. figured out.

1065. I'll just follow the rules."

1066. And there's going to be another person

  1067. here

1068. who's going to pound his chest

1069. unable to lift his eyes up

  1070. and cry out,

1071. "Have mercy on me, God, a sinner."

  1072. Don't forget.

1073. Only one of those two leaves

  1074. forgiven.

  1075. Leaves sanctified.

  1076. Let's pray.

  1077. Heavenly Father,

1078. I thank you that you are willing to come

  1079. into our lives.

  1080. That you take the

1081. amazing action of giving us your

  1082. revelation

1083. knowing how quickly we will make it a

  1084. religious system.

1085. We ask you, Holy Spirit, to come and

1086. convict each one of us

1087. of that which keeps us from you because

1088. we follow the religious ideals and rules

1089. that are not even there.

1090. And help us, Father, to be people people

  1091. people keepers

  1092. as you were.

1093. And where we have laws that are hurting

  1094. other people

1095. help us to say too bad for the law.

  1096. In Jesus name.

  1097. Amen.
