  1. Amen. Amen. All right. So, we are uh in

  2. our sermon series, The King has come.

  3. And do you know this movie play? Um are

  4. you a fan? Um I it was one of those

  5. things where I got married, I was not a

  6. fan of musical theater. I'm like, why

  7. don't they just say the lines? Why I

  8. have to stop and sing all the time?

  9. But um my wife has cultured me and uh

  10. this is now one of my favorites. If you

  11. know the story, it's about a man

  12. primarily Jean Jean and um he's a bit of

  13. a mixed bag, right? Some stuff has

  14. happened to him unjustly, but there's

  15. also some stuff that he contributed that

  16. he shouldn't have done. And uh he finds

  17. himself on the run. He's in a small

  18. French town. He ends up uh being taken

  19. in by a local parish priest. Priest lets

  20. him stay the night, feeds him, takes

  21. care of him, and Valjon repays the

  22. priest's kindness by stealing his

  23. silverware. Um because that time it's

  24. actually made of silver. It's actually

  25. valuable. So, Valjon wakes up in the

  26. middle of the night, grabs a sack, puts

  27. a bunch of silverware and stuff in

  28. there, and he takes off only to be

  29. quickly apprehended by the local police

  30. and brought back to uh the priest. When

  31. the cops show up with Valjon and tow

  32. little battered because they helped him

  33. comply, um they say, "Hey, uh priest,

  34. this guy we found with your silverware

  35. and get this, he had the audacity to say

  36. that you gave it to him."

  37. And the priest says, "I did." And then

  38. the priest says in the view of the

  39. police officers, "And why did you forget

  40. this piece and this piece?" and he goes

  41. and gets a candlestick and some other

  42. things and really loads him up. The cops

  43. are kind of convinced but begrudgingly

  44. head off and uh Valjon is left with the

  45. priest face to face and the priest says

  46. in this moment with this silver you're

  47. going to be a new man because I am going

  48. to buy your soul for God. Now, don't

  49. like the theology so much of that,

  50. but if you know the story, it ends up to

  51. be the pivotal point because what that

  52. does is it rattles Valjon because it's

  53. the first time that he's ever really

  54. experienced, really felt, had someone do

  55. for him practically something of grace,

  56. something of mercy. And so Valjon goes

  57. and the next song that he sings um is

  58. him wrestling this down and where he

  59. lands at the end of the song is I'm

  60. going to be a new man. And he is. And I

  61. bring that story up because I love one

  62. the picture of it

  63. because it's a picture of mercy.

  64. It's a poignant picture of what could

  65. happen when someone receives mercy which

  66. is fully and totally undeserved. And the

  67. thing about mercy is it's something that

  68. you and I rarely think about tangibly

  69. except when we need it. What I mean is,

  70. and and you've been there, you're

  71. driving down 35, you see the police

  72. officer, then you see your speed, then

  73. you see the police officer pull out

  74. behind you. What's your hope in that

  75. moment? Mercy. I'm looking for some big

  76. time mercy right now. Um or right, it's

  77. the end of the quarter. the project that

  78. you're leading hasn't gone the way your

  79. boss wanted it to go and you're going to

  80. have to do the report of like, "Hey

  81. boss, you know, we're stuck here. What

  82. are you hoping for from your boss?"

  83. Mercy. Now, this doesn't happen to you,

  84. but other couples get into disagreements

  85. from time to time, and sometimes you

  86. raise your voice, and you know you were

  87. wrong, and so you got to go back and say

  88. you're sorry. And what are you hoping

  89. for? A moment for mercy.

  90. You're a student.

  91. And maybe you procrastinated just a

  92. little bit towards the end of the

  93. semester and you have to go to the

  94. professor or the teacher and say, "Hey,

  95. that paper's going to be a day or two

  96. late. What are you hoping for?" Mercy.

  97. Right? Here's the thing. You and I don't

  98. get very far in life without needing a

  99. good bit of mercy when we think about

  100. it. Why? Well, just raise your hand if

  101. you're perfect.

  102. Yeah, me neither. My hand's not up,

  103. right? But we don't get very far, right?

  104. We need mercy on the regular like, "Oh

  105. yeah, I got to ask for forgiveness there

  106. and please, I'm sorry for that." Right?

  107. We need mercy. Here's my deeper

  108. question. If you and I need it from one

  109. another pretty often,

  110. is it possible that we actually need it

  111. from God?

  112. And if that's the case,

  113. what do you hope God is?

  114. merciful question. Is he

  115. right? When you're sitting in your car

  116. pulled off to the side on 35, you don't

  117. know which police officer you're going

  118. to get. The guy who's like, "Slow down.

  119. Verbal warning." And you're like, "Oh,

  120. yeah. No, it's only time I've ever

  121. sped."

  122. Or the police officer who is like,

  123. "Forget your license and registration.

  124. Here's your ticket."

  125. You don't know which God do you have?

  126. Do you know

  127. what happens if you really mess up? What

  128. god do you have?

  129. Ah, we're in the series the king has

  130. come because we're looking at this

  131. advent season. The king who is going to

  132. be born in a manger. What kind of king

  133. is he? Is he benevolent king? Is a harsh

  134. king? Somewhere in between? depends on

  135. what day you catch him. Last week we

  136. said he's a promised king and we looked

  137. back at a promise to King David that

  138. this king would sit on his throne. And

  139. this promised king is going to be

  140. gracious. We found out he's going to be

  141. divine. He's going to be God himself.

  142. He's also going to require something of

  143. us. And we say he's going to require

  144. humility. And today what I want us to

  145. look at is our merciful king. Because

  146. what Mary is going to do in the passage

  147. that we'll look at uh look at is she's

  148. going to say, "Oh, not once but twice

  149. that we have a God who is a king who is

  150. full of mercy." So if you have your

  151. Bibles, we're going to be in Luke

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  152. chapter 1. We're going to start uh in

  153. verse 46.

  154. So Luke 1 verse 46 at our merciful king.

    Luke 1:46

  155. How is he merciful? What does his mercy

  156. look like? And this is what we're going

  157. to see as we get going that our merciful

  158. king, he brings us joy. Our merciful

  159. king brings us joy.

  160. So again, Luke 1 starting

  161. in verse 46,

  162. the word of God says,

  163. "And Mary said, my soul magnifies the

  164. Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my

  165. Savior, for he has looked on the humble

  166. estate of his servant. For behold, from

  167. now on all generations will call me

  168. blessed.

  169. If you look back at verse 46, Mary

  170. starts off and she says, "My soul

  171. magnifies."

  172. Oftentimes we know this song of Mary by

  173. its Latin name, Magnificat, which is

  174. just Latin for magnify. And what she

  175. says, and you know what it means to

  176. magnify something, it's made big. It's

  177. made large at the news that the king is

  178. coming and that she's gonna pay play a

  179. pretty particular role. In that coming,

  180. God gets big. God gets really big. And

  181. sort of like what we said just a minute

  182. ago about mercy. And I I kind of think

  183. about it sometimes, but not usually

  184. until I need it. It's kind of the same

  185. thing with magnifying things. What do I

  186. mean? Well, I mean you and I always are

  187. magnifying something.

  188. something in your life and my life is

  189. always big, right? So again, you're a

  190. student and it may be the opinion of

  191. your peers is really big to you or the

  192. grades you need to get or the SAT score

  193. is really big to you so that you can get

  194. into the right school that you want to

  195. get to because your parents went there

  196. and they've indoctrinated you. Other

  197. parents have done that, not you. I may

  198. have done that, but it's big, right?

  199. Right? You're a single. What's big to

  200. singles a lot of times? H if I could get

  201. a relationship and then when you're in a

  202. relationship, what happens? That person

  203. tends to become big, right? You're a

  204. parent, man. How are my kids doing? Man,

  205. that becomes big.

  206. You're a grandparent. You know what

  207. becomes big? Grandkids. That you get to

  208. give back to your kids. That's what gets

  209. to be big. you're in your career and the

  210. next promotion, the next great

  211. assignment

  212. becomes big.

  213. Now, notice

  214. none of the list of what I just said,

  215. none of that is bad.

  216. All of those are good things. Here's the

  217. challenge. They just can't be the

  218. biggest thing.

  219. Why? Because what happens with your

  220. heart and my heart if we're not careful

  221. is they're always going to drift, right?

  222. You just let it go. It's like a toddler.

  223. Just put them down. Watch because

  224. they're going to move, right? It's like

  225. your heart, right? It's always going to

  226. gravitate. Something's always going to

  227. get its attention. Something, it's

  228. always wanting to magnify something.

  229. And anything that is not first and full

  230. stop God being magnified in your heart,

  231. what tends to be a good thing becomes a

  232. bad thing. Why? Well, here's the truth.

  233. The question is never if we magnify.

  234. The question for all of us is what you

  235. magnify.

  236. Now, here's what I want to point out

  237. that I hadn't seen until this year. And

  238. what it is is the catalyst to what was

  239. actually

  240. magnifying for Mary. So if you look back

  241. at verse 29, notice something about how

  242. Mary responded when the angel was there.

  243. She was greatly troubled. She tried to

  244. discern what sort of greeting this is.

  245. The angel says in verse 30, "Mary, don't

  246. be afraid." Why? Because she was.

  247. And then it ends where in verse 38, this

  248. is Mary's posture. She's like, she's

  249. taking this all in. She doesn't know

  250. what to think. She goes, "Okay, I

  251. believe you. I'm I'm just a servant of

  252. the Lord."

  253. Notice, did Mary start singing in front

  254. of the angel? No. Look what happened.

  255. Look at verse 39.

  256. In those days, Mary arose and went with

  257. haste into the hill country to a town in

  258. Judah. And she entered the house of

  259. Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. That's

  260. her cousin who's who's pregnant with

  261. who's going to be John the Baptist. And

  262. when Elizabeth heard the greeting of

  263. Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And

  264. Elizabeth was filled with the Holy

  265. Spirit, and she exclaimed with a loud

  266. cry, "Blessed are you among women, and

  267. blessed is the fruit of your womb. And

  268. why is this granted to me that the

  269. mother of my Lord should come to me? For

  270. behold, when the sound of your greeting

  271. came to my ears, the baby in my womb

  272. leaped for joy, and blessed is she who

  273. believed that there would be fulfillment

  274. of what was spoken to her from the Lord.

  275. Notice, and right, Mary shows up at

  276. Elizabeth's house, and let me

  277. paraphrase, this is what Elizabeth does.

  278. Again,

  279. paraphrase.

  280. And Mary is going to do the same thing.

  281. She's going to bust out in song.

  282. Very interesting. Why didn't she do that

  283. with the angel?

  284. Why? I'll tell you why.

  285. Because like Mary, like Elizabeth, for

  286. you and I to fully

  287. magnify

  288. to fully. She's going to say in a

  289. second. We're going to rejoice.

  290. Do you know who you need

  291. us?

  292. You need other people.

  293. You need your family, your church

  294. family. You need to come around a bunch

  295. of other people Sunday by Sunday and

  296. Thursday by Thursday and whenever your

  297. small group meets so that you can get

  298. around other people who are trying

  299. imperfectly like you to magnify what's

  300. most important so all the other things

  301. that you magnify stay in their proper

  302. proportion.

  303. You need each other more than you

  304. realize.

  305. And let me tell you, you've already

  306. experienced this many times. How do I

  307. know? Because you all like football,

  308. right? So for me, so far on my list,

  309. I've been at a home game for Baylor,

  310. for&M, and UT. And all of them are fun.

  311. All of them have their traditions. At

  312. Baylor, you run the line. at&m you've

  313. got the yells and the yell leaders and

  314. that whole deal and the 12th man and at

  315. UT I love going to DK Royal because when

  316. you go to a UT game they say bad words

  317. about Oklahoma

  318. which was funny the first time I went

  319. because they weren't even playing

  320. Oklahoma and they still found time to

  321. say bad words about Oklahoma. Amazing.

  322. Something deep there. Um,

  323. no shade to my Oklahoma brethren.

  324. Here's what I noticed. At all three

  325. stadiums,

  326. touchdown would happen,

  327. interception would happen, and everyone

  328. would cheer.

  329. Everyone would start high-fiving their

  330. neighbor, even if they didn't know him.

  331. They would start spilling beverages on

  332. each other in their excitement

  333. and no one had to tell them to do that.

  334. Now contrast that with how you tend to

  335. behave when you're at home by yourself

  336. on your couch watching the same game.

  337. Do you freak out in the same way? Well,

  338. some of you do. Right? You know who you

  339. are.

  340. My office hours are um No, here's what

  341. you do when you're by yourself, right?

  342. You're still happy, but you'll do

  343. nice job.

  344. Why the difference?

  345. Same touchdown,

  346. same interception.

  347. The degree to which you are with other

  348. people who are trying to magnify notice

  349. the things that you want to magnify

  350. increases your magnification.

  351. Do you want to increase your joy?

  352. Do you want to increase what whatever's

  353. at like like notice she says her soul

  354. magnifies my spirit rejoices. This is

  355. like the deepest parts of her.

  356. How do you know what you really love?

  357. How do you How do you really know what's

  358. important to you? That's a thing you're

  359. magnifying.

  360. That's a thing you're cheering.

  361. Mary says, "My soul magnifies the Lord."

  362. And check this out, "And my spirit

  363. rejoices in

  364. God, my Savior.

  365. Again, it's implicit and it's easy to

  366. miss if you don't catch it. But when

  367. someone says, "God, my savior," you are

  368. implicitly admitting something

  369. very profound.

  370. If you're saying, "God is your savior,"

  371. it means you need one.

  372. Which every human this is their root

  373. struggle. And you see it all over our

  374. culture, right? Our culture says what

  375. are people basically good? You're

  376. basically good. Yeah, you have some

  377. foibless. Yeah, you make mistakes, but

  378. you're basically good. And what we need

  379. to do with our basically good

  380. population, if we just if we just

  381. removed all the societal problems and

  382. ills and if we could just get the

  383. society right, then all of our

  384. collective goodness would just emerge.

  385. What's the one problem with that?

  386. It's dead wrong.

  387. Why?

  388. Because none of us are good.

  389. All of us, man, like go back to our our

  390. very imperfect poll earlier. Who's

  391. perfect? Nobody.

  392. Now, notice something.

  393. Tie it together.

  394. Why is Mary able to magnify the Lord and

  395. rejoice in God my savior?

  396. Because what kind of God does she have?

  397. A merciful one.

  398. A merciful one. You don't magnify God.

  399. You don't rejoice in God your savior if

  400. he doesn't when you come to him with

  401. your mistakes, with your sin, with your

  402. struggles. And he's the bad cop. I told

  403. you not to do that.

  404. What kind of God do you have?

  405. He's merciful. He's merciful

  406. and praise God he is.

  407. Our merciful king not only brings us

  408. joy, he displays his might. And we're

  409. going to see now in this next section

  410. the word that we've been anchoring on

  411. show up. Look at verse 49.

  412. Mary goes on in her song and she says,

  413. "For he who is what? mighty

  414. has done great things for me and holy is

  415. his name. And look at verse 40. And his

  416. what? His mercy.

  417. His mercy is for those who fear him from

  418. generation to generation. He has shown

  419. his strength. Synonym for what? Might.

  420. He has shown his strength with his arm.

  421. He has scattered the proud in the

  422. thoughts of their hearts. He has brought

  423. down the mighty from their thrones and

  424. exalted those of humble estate. He has

  425. filled the hungry with good things and

  426. the rich he has sent away empty.

  427. What's amazing about our God is he's not

  428. like 50% might and 50% mercy. He is 100%

  429. might and 100% mercy. And when you

  430. clearly see his might, it only amplifies

  431. his mercy. And when you clearly see his

  432. mercy, it only amplifies his might. Look

  433. back at the text. Verse

  434. 50 says, "And his mercy is for a

  435. specific group of people." Who is that?

  436. Those who fear him. Not terror fear,

  437. reverential awe fear. Those who go when

  438. they see God. You're God. I'm not.

  439. You're creator. I'm creation. I know my

  440. place when I come before you, God.

  441. And I just love this. It's so easy to

  442. miss. Why is it important that your

  443. Bible says from generation to

  444. generation?

  445. Because it means that God is merciful in

  446. the first century and the 21st century.

  447. That there is not a generation that

  448. doesn't receive

  449. because we also need his. You got it.

  450. And then she goes on, he has shown his

  451. strength with his arm. how how has he

  452. shown his strength? And she's just going

  453. to start listing them. One, he has

  454. scattered the proud in the thoughts of

  455. their hearts. Proud people don't have

  456. God as their savior because they don't

  457. need God as their savior. They don't

  458. need them to look at their humble estate

  459. like Mary says. Why? Because I got it

  460. figured out. I got life licked. I don't

  461. thanks but no thanks God.

  462. What's going to happen to those people?

  463. Scattered, literally broken apart.

  464. And then it says verse 52, "Then he has

  465. brought down the mighty from their

  466. thrones." You know, for you and I, we

  467. look at people on their thrones, whether

  468. it be political prime ministers and

  469. presidents and ambassadors and all the

  470. rest, like, "Oh, those guys have some

  471. might. Those ladies have some might.

  472. They have some power." You know what God

  473. does?

  474. You think you're mighty?

  475. Proverbs tells you that every person in

  476. power,

  477. their heart is like a stream in his hand

  478. and he just moves it wherever he will.

  479. And the other side of the coin, what

  480. does he do? He exalts those back to

  481. verse 52 of humble estate.

  482. There's basically two kinds of ways to

  483. go through life. You can go through your

  484. life in humility where you continue to

  485. push yourself down and God in his grace

  486. will lift you up.

  487. Or you can choose to go through life and

  488. lift yourself up. And guess what God

  489. will do? He will push you down.

  490. That is if he's gracious to you.

  491. The worst thing that God can do to

  492. anybody is give them what their wicked

  493. hearts want. The worst thing that God

  494. could do to a proud person is leave them

  495. in their pride.

  496. Verse 53, he's also filled the hungry

  497. with good things.

  498. Challenge there is you have to admit

  499. you're hungry. You have to admit you're

  500. needy. You have to admit you need what

  501. this merciful, mighty God only can

  502. deliver. In contrast, the rich, they get

  503. sent away empty.

  504. There's coming a day at judgment where

  505. those who went through life just like

  506. Lord I need your help. Those will find

  507. every desire, every need, like all of it

  508. fulfilled.

  509. And those who went through life, I don't

  510. need you. I don't want you. And God will

  511. say, have it your way.

  512. And God is both at the same time because

  513. you see it. You see it on the page

  514. woven. It's like, why would you do that?

  515. Why not just be humble and ask for

  516. mercy?

  517. And again, here's what I want you to

  518. see. That at the same time, his might

  519. and his mercy are in view. Why? Because

  520. his might actually amplifies his mercy.

  521. Have you ever seen this guy,

  522. Shaquille O'Neal, for our non basketball

  523. fans?

  524. Uh Shaquille is uh 7 feet 1 inch tall

  525. and north of 300 pound. I actually have

  526. met two guys that have met Shaquille and

  527. they said this was their experience

  528. something like that.

  529. He's also a really kind guy.

  530. Excuse

  531. me. Are you Michael Jordan?

  532. >> No, I'm better than Michael Jordan. My

  533. name is Shaq O'Neal.

  534. His

  535. size

  536. amplifies his mercy.

  537. You know what you and I get to see at

  538. Christmas?

  539. A mighty God who amplifies his mercy.

  540. How do I mean?

  541. Well, again, just imagine if you will,

  542. you and I were at the heavenly staff

  543. meeting

  544. where God's calling us together and he's

  545. like, "Okay guys, we need to figure out

  546. how we are going to send the Messiah.

  547. I raise my hand because I've got good

  548. ideas

  549. and I'm like, "God, here's what we do.

  550. Jesus, like full like shack size,

  551. heavenly armor. I mean, huge majestic

  552. horse, sword." I'm like, he's at the

  553. front of rank after rank of these angel

  554. armies and they're all clad in heavenly

  555. armor and they all just got done working

  556. out. It's like amazing. And God listens.

  557. He's like, "Okay, Eric,

  558. we're sending a baby."

  559. And I'm like, I'm there because I'm

  560. taking notes at the meeting. I'm like,

  561. "What? What' God say?"

  562. You say, "Baby,

  563. think about it. Think about it. How

  564. mighty do you have to be where you can

  565. literally defeat sin, death, and the

  566. devil, save humanity through a baby?

  567. And how merciful do you have to be

  568. that that's how you would choose to do

  569. it?

  570. You know why you get stressed out?

  571. You know why you get anxious?

  572. Because in the moment you have amnesia.

  573. I have amnesia. And I forget

  574. that I have a mighty God who's also

  575. merciful.

  576. That every problem you have, he has

  577. enough might to meet it.

  578. And he's also not like I can't believe I

  579. got to fix this for you again.

  580. I was like happy to.

  581. Every time you come to him, he wraps you

  582. up like shack and that little boy.

  583. Every time.

  584. and everything you tell him. He's like,

  585. I can handle that.

  586. And I can hand How do you know? He

  587. reminds you every Christmas.

  588. He reminds you every Christmas.

  589. Paul Trip says this. There aren't two

  590. things in all of life more important

  591. than these. that God's

  592. mercy has purchased for you a place in

  593. his family and that God's power

  594. or his might

  595. controls all things for your good until

  596. your eternal inheritance is received.

  597. Man, I love that we have a merciful God

  598. who is really mighty.

  599. Last point, our merciful king honors his

  600. word.

  601. He honors his word. Verse 54,

  602. Mary concludes her song and she says,

  603. "He has helped his servant Israel in

  604. remembrance of his mercy

  605. as he spoke to our fathers and to

  606. Abraham and to his offspring forever." A

  607. couple things just to note. Every time

  608. you see the word like here in verse 54

  609. remembrance or remember um you have the

  610. Bible is using that word almost every

  611. single time old testament new testament

  612. in a particular way. Remembrance is not

  613. cognitive it's active. What I mean by

  614. that is it's never like in this case

  615. like God's there and he's like oh yeah I

  616. remember I'm merciful good on me.

  617. No, it's always active. Meaning that

  618. what the person oftenimes in the Psalms,

  619. right? God, remember me. What are they

  620. asking for? A God that's like, oh, I

  621. remember you.

  622. No, what are they asking? God, I need

  623. you to remember me and act

  624. in concert with who you've said you are

  625. and what you've said to me. So verse,

  626. look at verse 54.

  627. He has helped his servant Israel. Why?

  628. Because the contents of the remembrance

  629. is his mercy. And then Mary pulls out,

  630. last week we pulled out the promise to

  631. David. She pulls out the promise to

  632. Abraham. Why? Because in chapter 12 when

  633. God shows up in Abraham's life, he says,

  634. "Look, um, I know you have no kids. Your

  635. wife is barren. Don't worry about that.

  636. I'm going to change that. So much so

  637. that I want you to look up at the stars

  638. in the sky. That's how big your family's

  639. going to be. And oh, by the way, even

  640. better, through your family, I'm going

  641. to bless every family on the planet.

  642. Why? Because he's a merciful God. And

  643. now you know why. Verse 55 says, as he

  644. spoke to our fathers, because he doesn't

  645. just say it to Abraham, he repeats it to

  646. Isaac. He repeats it to Jacob. And he

  647. repeats it all the way through the

  648. prophets. Remember, I'm going to be

  649. merciful. Remember, I got a plan for

  650. you. Remember,

  651. and God in this moment is acting by

  652. sending his son

  653. as the fulfillment to what he said to

  654. Abraham.

  655. Now, why do you and I 2,000 years later

  656. need to remember

  657. that God remembers?

  658. Because he's made promises to you.

  659. Jesus promised you that if he goes away,

  660. he's going to prepare a place for you.

  661. And he also promised that when he's done

  662. preparing that place, what's he going to

  663. do?

  664. He's going to come get you.

  665. Jesus also promised. He said, he goes,

  666. "Look, the father's going to give me a

  667. lot of people. It's kind of like they're

  668. in my hand. How many is he going to

  669. lose?

  670. Zero.

  671. promise you.

  672. God says through the Apostle Paul in

  673. Romans 8, he says, "Nothing ever, ever,

  674. ever, ever, ever, ever will separate you

  675. from my love. Nothing.

  676. I promise."

  677. And for you and I, 2,000 years after

  678. Mary's song, the other thing we're

  679. supposed to remember is his mercy. and

  680. it's been in the Bible the whole time.

  681. This is a a picture of what the ark of

  682. the covenant looked like.

  683. You notice on the top two angels, their

  684. cherubim.

  685. And the ark in in the Jewish uh culture

  686. and worship uh stayed in one particular

  687. place in the tabernacle or the temple

  688. and it was in the holy of holies. uh you

  689. couldn't go there. Only the high priest

  690. once a year could go in there. You'll

  691. never guess what the top portion was

  692. called. Um there where the angels have

  693. their wings tied. Do you know what

  694. that's called?

  695. It's the mercy seat.

  696. Hebrews unpacks it a little for us. Let

  697. us then with confidence draw near to the

  698. throne. The mercy seat was actually the

  699. throne that God sat on figuratively in

  700. the world on the planet. That was his

  701. throne. What kind of throne? It's a

  702. throne of grace.

  703. Why is it a throne of so that we may

  704. receive

  705. mercy

  706. and find grace to help in time of need.

  707. What's interesting about the language

  708. there in Hebrews is essentially the way

  709. the writer writes it. It's like this. um

  710. come to the throne that always and

  711. forever and can only produce grace.

  712. It's the throne that every time you

  713. come, you know what you're going to get?

  714. Grace. You know what happens when you

  715. blow it for the thousandth time and you

  716. go to that throne? You know what you

  717. get? Grace.

  718. Why?

  719. Because he's merciful.

  720. And he wants you to remember.

  721. He wants you to remember that he is a

  722. merciful God.

  723. And it's also very similar to what Jesus

  724. said to do.

  725. So if you have your elements, please

  726. grab them. If you don't have them, go

  727. ahead and raise your hand. We got a few

  728. of the ushers around that will get them

  729. to you

  730. because not only is remembering in Luke

  731. 1

  732. What Jesus says when he institutes the

  733. Lord's supper,

  734. he says, "Remember."

  735. Remember

  736. why we tend to forget.

  737. I tend to forget.

  738. I need to be reminded.

  739. Remember that he came as a baby.

  740. Why? Because our God is both merciful

  741. and mighty.

  742. But also remember that he didn't stay a

  743. baby.

  744. He grew up.

  745. And he did something that was

  746. pretty remarkable,

  747. particularly for a king.

  748. All the kings that you know in history,

  749. they're all pretty similar.

  750. And they all say this to their um

  751. people.

  752. I'm the king. Need you to do something

  753. for me. You're my subjects.

  754. Some of you guys, I need you in my army.

  755. And some of you guys, you're going to

  756. need to lay your life down for me and my

  757. kingdom.

  758. Not your king.

  759. See, your king is the only king who

  760. says, "No, I actually will lay my life

  761. down for you."

  762. And that's why he gets to be king of

  763. kings and lord of lords.

  764. He's the only king that did that.

  765. And so what does he say?

  766. Friends, remember

  767. So on the night that he was betrayed, he

  768. took some bread

  769. and when he had given thanks, he broke

  770. it

  771. because it was going to be his body

  772. broken for you.

  773. He's going to take the thorns. He's

  774. going to take the whip. He's going to

  775. take the nails

  776. so they'll never touch you.

  777. And so we remember and we

  778. And after supper, he took a cup.

  779. He said, "There's a new covenant.

  780. There's a new way we're going to do

  781. things. There's a new way that humanity

  782. is going to relate to God. It's going to

  783. be through me.

  784. It's not going to be your blood shed.

  785. It's going to be mine.

  786. all the sacrifices are over in my

  787. sacrifice

  788. so that all your sins can be forgiven.

  789. He said, "Do this as often as you drink

  790. of it in remembrance of me."

  791. So, Father, we thank you again

  792. as we remember your goodness, your

  793. kindness, your mercy to us

  794. and for each of us where we are this

  795. Sunday morning. I pray that in your

  796. grace you would meet us here.

  797. If it's really some mercy we need, I

  798. pray that you give it. If it's some

  799. might we need, I pray you'd give it

  800. and that we'd walk away joyful.

  801. Jesus, we declare that you are the one

  802. and only king.

  803. And it's in his name we pray.
