  1. And we ask it in Jesus name and

  2. everyone's sake. Amen.

  3. >> Amen. Uh thanks Eric. That's all uh

  4. super exciting news to hear about all

  5. that God is doing. I actually got to be

  6. at the women's conference uh this

  7. weekend. I was one of three men in a

  8. building full of hundreds of women. Um

  9. and I feel sufficiently changed. I do.

  10. Um, I've been joking with Heather

  11. Vanstavern that I now have a list of

  12. things that are things you would not

  13. hear at a men's conference. Um, so it

  14. was it was really exciting, just a

  15. beautiful weekend. So, as we jump in

  16. today, I want to ask you a question.

  17. When I say the word wisdom,

  18. what comes to mind? What images come to

  19. mind? I'm going give you just a second.

  20. When I say wisdom, what are some images

  21. that you think of?

  22. So, if you're a reader,

  23. maybe something like this, a big

  24. library. Think of all the information

  25. that's inside the walls of a building

  26. like that. All the different things that

  27. are contained in those books. Or think

  28. about the internet, right? If you grew

  29. up without the internet at some point,

  30. if you're old enough to be in that

  31. group, like what an amazing thing that

  32. all this information is at your

  33. fingertips. Um, sadly, a whole bunch of

  34. nonsense also at your fingertips with

  35. the internet. So, you got to be careful

  36. there. But, uh, if you're a Lord of the

  37. Rings fan like I am, you might think of

  38. this guy. This is Gandalf from Lord of

  39. the Rings and he's become sort of this

  40. icon of wisdom in in literature and he's

  41. lived several lifetimes and he's got all

  42. this collective experience and he guides

  43. the fellowship on their perilous

  44. journey.

  45. Uh, this one

  46. should be Right.

  47. Uh, you know, sometimes there's a lot of

  48. collective wisdom in that room and

  49. sometimes,

  50. let's just go to the next one.

  51. Um, I found some good definitions of

  52. wisdom online. Uh, wisdom is the art of

  53. not making dumb decisions.

  54. Great. Uh, this helped clear up some

  55. terms for us. Knowledge is knowing that

  56. a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not

  57. putting it into a fruit salad. And

  58. philosophy is pondering if that means

  59. that ketchup qualifies as a smoothie.

  60. Profound.

  61. Glad I could clear up those terms for

  62. us. Wisdom is not opening your wallet in

  63. front of your friends.

  64. And one more funny one from author Terry

  65. Pritchard. Wisdom is gained by

  66. experience. Experience is often the

  67. result of lack of wisdom.

  68. That's true, right? For example, uh how

  69. many of you have ever had this

  70. experience? You uh are on the internet

  71. and you found a piece of information

  72. that you thought was particularly

  73. insightful or inspiring or more likely

  74. what happened is you thought that it

  75. would prove a point that you have been

  76. trying to make to your spouse or to your

  77. friends or to your in-laws. So you go

  78. and passionately share this newfound

  79. internet information with them and then

  80. you find out almost immediately that's

  81. completely false. Ever happened to you?

  82. This is for you.

  83. That's good. I love the like developing

  84. laughter. It depends on how fast you

  85. read, right? This is good internet

  86. advice. This is wisdom that we learn

  87. from the internet is that you can't

  88. trust everything. What I want to see

  89. today in Genesis chapter 13 as we look

    Genesis 13 chapter mention

  90. at the life of Abram that living a life

  91. of faith requires wisdom. And before we

  92. jump in to our main text, let's take a

  93. second to talk about what wisdom

  94. actually is. Right? Like I've made some

  95. quippy funny definitions, but what is it

  96. really? Right? Wisdom is more than

  97. knowledge. Okay? Because we all know

  98. people who have a head full of knowledge

  99. with zero ability to put that knowledge

  100. into practice in their life. Right?

  101. Maybe that's you. But that's it's wisdom

  102. is more than just knowing things. So

  103. here's a here's a better definition.

  104. Wisdom is the ability to apply relevant

  105. knowledge in an insightful way,

  106. especially to different situations from

  107. that in which the knowledge was gained.

  108. or simpler way to say that is it's the

  109. ability to take what we know to be true

  110. and apply that truth to the way we live

  111. our daily lives. So some good general

  112. definitions of wisdom but then the

  113. question is how do we get it? If we know

  114. what it is, how do we get it? And I

  115. think there's three ways and we can

  116. think of these in order as good, better

  117. and best. Okay. So, first we can get

  118. wisdom through experience and failure.

  119. The school of hard knocks is a

  120. unpleasant but effective way to become

  121. more wise. And that's a fact of life for

  122. all of us. We're going to make mistakes

  123. that we're going to have to learn from

  124. and hopefully grow in the process. Last

  125. week, we looked at the second half of

  126. Genesis 12 and we see Abram make some

  127. really unwise decisions, right? He goes

  128. down to Egypt because there's a famine

  129. in the land that God has called him to.

  130. And he probably shouldn't have gone to

  131. Egypt in the first place, but he really

  132. shouldn't have done the things that he

  133. did while he was in Egypt. He doesn't

  134. trust God. He makes some bad decisions.

  135. He gets himself into trouble. And so

  136. then we'll see in chapter 13 today if

  137. he's gained experience from or if he's

  138. gained wisdom, sorry, from his

  139. experience in chapter 12. So, we can

  140. gain wisdom from experience. Um, another

  141. way is that if we're humble enough, we

  142. can gain wisdom from other people who

  143. have gone before us, who have lived more

  144. life than what we've lived. If you've

  145. ever parented pre-teens or teenagers,

  146. you have probably said, "I just don't

  147. want you to make the same mistakes that

  148. I made when I was your age." Right? you,

  149. the parent, have done something dumb in

  150. the past. And because you love your

  151. kids, you don't want them to make the

  152. same mistakes and have to live with the

  153. pain that those mistakes bring. And so

  154. you warn them and you give them advice

  155. based on your experience. And it works

  156. every time.

  157. Every time

  158. you warn your children about an unwise

  159. decision and they say, "Thank you so

  160. much

  161. for sharing your hard one wisdom with

  162. me. I'll put that into practice right

  163. now." And I definitely will not do the

  164. thing that I was planning to do before

  165. you warned me. Thank you. I'm so

  166. grateful to have such wise parents.

  167. Right. Um if we're willing, we can gain

  168. wisdom from others. And it's usually a

  169. better way than making mistakes that we

  170. could have avoided. Right? But the third

  171. way, the best way, if we understand that

  172. true wisdom really comes from God, it

  173. all flows from him, then the best way to

  174. get it is from his word and from the

  175. Holy Spirit who lives inside of you. If

  176. you're a believer, so if that's true,

  177. then what does the Bible say about

  178. wisdom?

  179. Proverbs 9 says, "The fear of the Lord

  180. is the beginning of wisdom, and the

  181. knowledge of the Holy One is insight.

  182. Wisdom comes through knowing God and

  183. being in a relationship with him." James

  184. 1 says, "If any of you lacks wisdom, let

  185. him ask God, who gives generously to all

  186. without reproach, and it will be given

  187. to him." God is an infinite source of

  188. wisdom and he loves to give it to people

  189. who ask him and that's good news for us

  190. who lack wisdom. And then Psalm 119

  191. says, "Through your precepts I get

  192. understanding. Therefore, I hate every

  193. false way. Your word is a lamp to my

  194. feet and a light to my path." So, we get

  195. wisdom from God's word. Precept

  196. is not a word that we use very often,

  197. right? Precept is just a rule that's

  198. meant to govern or to direct moral

  199. behavior or actions.

  200. Uh Bible's full of precepts. Bible's

  201. full of rules. As we uh as we read God's

  202. word, we get all these things that's

  203. like live this way, live this way, live

  204. this way.

  205. The verse tells us that we can gain

  206. understanding and wisdom by following

  207. them, by obeying them, by knowing his

  208. word. Turns out that the rules that are

  209. in the Bible are actually there for our

  210. good. And if we follow them, we start to

  211. become more wise. A life of faith

  212. requires wisdom, and all true wisdom

  213. comes from him. And the primary way that

  214. God speaks to us today is actually

  215. through his word. It's not the only way,

  216. but it's the primary way. And at Lake

  217. View, one of our core values is that we

  218. are Bible rooted. And what that means is

  219. we believe that God's word is valuable.

  220. It's something to base our lives on.

  221. That it's worth knowing and following.

  222. And we also believe that it's not just a

  223. book of dos and don'ts.

  224. We believe that the Bible is the story

  225. of God. It tells us what he's like. It

  226. tells us his plan to redeem his people.

  227. And it tells us what's in store for us,

  228. what we can expect when we put our faith

  229. in him. The Bible's full of precepts.

  230. Yes, it's full of rules. Yes. And those

  231. rules are there for our good. But it's

  232. also full of promises.

  233. The promise of the gospel is that if we

  234. put our faith in Jesus, if we believe

  235. who he is and what he's done for us,

  236. that he gave his life on the cross for

  237. our sins and was raised from the dead on

  238. the third day. The promise that follows

  239. that is that if we believe by grace

  240. through faith, we're saved. We're

  241. forgiven of our sins. We're set free and

  242. we're adopted into the family of God. We

  243. become his sons and his daughters.

  244. That's a promise. And the beautiful

  245. thing about that promise is once we

  246. believe that one, then it opens up a

  247. wealth of other promises in God's word

  248. to us that he's made to people who

  249. belong to him. Once you're a son or

  250. daughter of God, there's all these

  251. promises that all of a sudden become

  252. true for you. All these things that he

  253. said that he will do and he keeps his

  254. promises.

  255. I want us to see today that

  256. true wisdom comes through knowing and

  257. trusting in the promises and in the

  258. precepts of God.

  259. Living a life of faith requires wisdom

  260. because it's not always easy, right? We

  261. learned last week that our faith will be

  262. tested.

  263. We learned from God's word that we have

  264. a very real enemy who would love to

  265. destroy our faith. And so what we need

  266. is a life of faith built on the wisdom

  267. that comes from building our foundation

  268. on Jesus and on his rules and precepts

  269. and promises. And I warn you as we get

  270. started and we talk about godly wisdom

  271. that it's often very different from the

  272. wisdom that the world presents. In fact,

  273. the world pretty often calls the wisdom

  274. of God foolishness.

  275. And so let's see as we get into our text

  276. today. Let's see how this plays out in

  277. Abram's life. So, Genesis chapter 13.

    Genesis 13 chapter mention

  278. I'll give you a second to get there. And

  279. we're going to start with the first

  280. seven verses. Genesis 13 or verse one.

  281. So, Abram went up from Egypt, he and his

  282. wife, and all that he had, and Lot with

  283. him into the negative. Now, Abram was

  284. very rich in livestock, in silver, and

  285. in gold. And he journeyied on the Nab as

  286. far as Bethl to the place where his tent

  287. had been at the beginning between Bethl

  288. and Ai to the place where he had made an

  289. altar at the first. And there Abram

  290. called upon the name of the Lord. And

  291. Lot who went with Abram also had flocks

  292. and herds and tents, so that the land

  293. could not support both of them dwelling

  294. together, for their possessions were so

  295. great that they could not dwell

  296. together. And there was strife between

  297. the herdsmen of Abram's livestock and

  298. the herdsmen of Lot's livestock. At that

  299. time, the Canaanites and the Parizzites

  300. were dwelling in the land. So, quick

  301. refresher from last week. Abraham was in

  302. Egypt because there was a famine. He

  303. left the place that God had called him

  304. to and now he's coming back. Okay? And

  305. Lot is Abram's nephew. And the reason

  306. that Lot is with Abram is because Lot's

  307. father has died and Abram has brought

  308. Lot in under his protection. And they

  309. are now living this nomadic experience

  310. in a hostile land full of rival tribes.

  311. And the relationship between the two of

  312. them is really important for their

  313. survival and for their good. And so

  314. Abram's back in the land or he's

  315. supposed to be. And it appears that he

  316. has in fact gained some wisdom from his

  317. chapter 12 experiences because what do

  318. we find him doing as soon as he gets

  319. back? It says he journeyed from the NGB

  320. as far as Bethl to the place where his

  321. tent had been at the beginning to the

  322. place where he had made an altar at the

  323. first and there Abram called upon the

  324. name of the Lord. So Abram messed up big

  325. time, right? He sinned by lying and

  326. trying to make his own way in Egypt. And

  327. now he returns to where God called him

  328. at first. And the first thing he does is

  329. he goes right back to where he built an

  330. altar and to where he worshiped the Lord

  331. before. He returns, he repents and he

  332. worships. And this is going to be really

  333. significant because this is the

  334. distinguishing factor in this chapter

  335. between Abram and Lot. One worships, one

  336. does not. Abram sees with the eyes of

  337. faith and makes decisions from a

  338. worshipful heart. Lot trusts only what

  339. he can see. And he makes decisions from

  340. a heart set on earthly ambition.

  341. So Abram has just made it out of Egypt

  342. by God's grace. And now as soon as he's

  343. back in the land, he's got problems

  344. already. And the problem is that he's

  345. too rich. Boohoo. Abram.

  346. But it's it's really is a significant

  347. problem. He's become so rich that he and

  348. Lot can't live in the land together

  349. because there's not enough water and

  350. food to support all of their livestock

  351. that they have. And so what I want us to

  352. see in these first seven verses is that

  353. wisdom puts our possessions in proper

  354. perspective.

  355. Because contrary to popular belief,

  356. wealth does not solve all our problems.

  357. If you've gotten a little bit of wealth

  358. for yourself, you probably understand

  359. that.

  360. But our tendency is to think, look, if I

  361. could just get a little bit more, sorry,

  362. if I could just get the promotion that

  363. I've been striving for all these years,

  364. then I could spend more time with my

  365. family. I could relax a little bit. Or

  366. if I just had a bigger house, we could

  367. spread out and we could be more

  368. comfortable. And uh then there wouldn't

  369. be so much strife in our home that's

  370. probably being caused by all the extra

  371. time we get to spend together because of

  372. the promotion,

  373. right? Or if I just had a little more

  374. money, then I could be more generous.

  375. I'd have more time to serve and I'd have

  376. more margin in my life to do good things

  377. if I just had a little more.

  378. Never really works like that, right? The

  379. truth is wealth often creates new and

  380. more complex problems that didn't exist

  381. before we had a little bit of wealth. We

  382. need wisdom to manage the things that

  383. God has given us. Whether we have a

  384. little bit or whether we have a lot. And

  385. in verse two, I think this is really

  386. interesting. The Hebrew word translated

  387. rich, when it says Abraham was rich in

  388. livestock and silver and gold, that word

  389. is actually literally heavy.

  390. So it says Abram was heavy with

  391. livestock and silver and gold. We need

  392. wisdom to manage our possessions because

  393. they can make us heavy if we're not

  394. careful. They can weigh us down. Mark

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  395. chapter 10 tells the story of the rich

  396. young ruler. So a man approaches Jesus

  397. and he says, "Teacher, what what do I

  398. have to do to get eternal life?" And

  399. Jesus' response is surprising because

  400. what does he say? If you remember the

  401. story, he says, "Keep the commandments,

  402. right? Don't murder, don't steal, honor

  403. your father and mother, all that." And

  404. Jesus knows that this guy can't get

  405. eternal life by keeping the commandments

  406. because he can't keep the commandments.

  407. But it's what he says because Jesus

  408. knows the man's heart and he's trying to

  409. get at a deeper issue. He knows his real

  410. issue.

  411. And Uh, interestingly, the the very

  412. unwise response that the rich young

  413. ruler makes is, "Oh, great. Did all

  414. that. I kept all those. I did all those

  415. rules." Which of course he hadn't. And

  416. look how Jesus responds. It says, "And

  417. Jesus looking at him loved him and said,

  418. "You lack one thing. Go sell all that

  419. you have and give it to the poor and

  420. then you'll have treasure in heaven and

  421. come follow me." And this is one of the

  422. more tragic statements in scripture.

  423. Disheartened by the saying, "He went

  424. away sorrowful, for he had great

  425. possessions."

  426. Being rich or even just having enough to

  427. meet our needs, not inherently bad.

  428. Wealth can be a blessing or it can be a

  429. curse depending on how we use it. And in

  430. the next section, we're going to see two

  431. very different paths for Abram and Lot.

  432. Both are rich. They make two very

  433. different decisions about how those

  434. possessions are going to influence their

  435. decision making and how they're going to

  436. view them with the eyes of faith.

  437. Two very different paths. Wisdom in the

  438. life of the rich young ruler might have

  439. sounded like Mark 8:36. For what does it

    Mark 8:36

  440. profit a man to gain the whole world and

  441. forfeit his soul? Four, Matthew 6, don't

  442. lay up for yourselves treasures on

  443. earth, where moth and rust destroy,

  444. where thieves break in and steal, but

  445. lay up for yourselves treasures in

  446. heaven, where none of that stuff

  447. happens. For where your treasure is,

  448. there your heart will be also. The rich

  449. young ruler is weighed down by his

  450. possessions. He's heavy with them. And

  451. his desire for what he has and to maybe

  452. have more is greater than his desire to

  453. know and follow Jesus. And because of

  454. it, he misses eternal life. He goes

  455. away. He doesn't follow Jesus. As far as

  456. we know, his stuff owned his heart and

  457. destroyed him.

  458. The wisdom of God's word said, "Don't

  459. trade your soul for money."

  460. That makes good sense, doesn't it? Abram

  461. has to decide what to do about his

  462. stuff. And he didn't have Mark 8 or

  463. Matthew 6 to guide him like we do. But

  464. what did he have? Let's look back at the

  465. beginning of chapter 12.

  466. This is the promise that God makes to

  467. Abram. He says, "Go from your country

  468. and your kindred and go from your

  469. father's house to a land that I will

  470. show you and I'll make you a great

  471. nation and bless you and make your name

  472. great so that you'll be a blessing and

  473. I'll bless those who bless you." God

  474. makes this promise to Abram

  475. and Abram has to make a choice. Do I

  476. believe what God said or not?

  477. Does that help the passage make sense?

  478. Five times he says, "I will."

  479. Wisdom comes by knowing and trusting the

  480. promises and the precepts of God. God's

  481. faithful and when he says he'll do

  482. something,

  483. he does it. And that's what Abram is

  484. going to have to Keep in mind, so Abram

  485. didn't trust God in Egypt. He comes back

  486. and he worships. Now, let's see what he

  487. does moving forward. Let's look at verse

  488. eight.

  489. Then Abram said to Lot, "Let there be no

  490. strife between you and me, between your

  491. herdsmen and my herdsmen, for we are

  492. kinsmen. Is not the whole land before

  493. you? Separate yourself from me. If you

  494. take the left, then I'll go to the

  495. right. If you take the right, then I'll

  496. go to the left. And Lot lifted up his

  497. eyes and saw that the Jordan Valley was

  498. well watered everywhere, like the garden

  499. of the Lord, like the land of Egypt in

  500. the direction of Zor. This was before

  501. the Lord had destroyed Sodom and

  502. Gomorrah. So Lot chose for himself all

  503. the Jordan Valley. And Lot journeyed

  504. east, and thus they separated from each

  505. other. Abram settled in the land of

  506. Canaan, while Lot settled among the

  507. cities of the valley and moved his tent

  508. as far as Sodom. Now the men of Sodom

  509. were wicked, great sinners.

  510. Wisdom puts our possessions into proper

  511. perspective.

  512. And it also reminds us that God is in

  513. control.

  514. A life of faith is full of decisions and

  515. inflection points. Right? God's going to

  516. say, "Trust me." And you and I have to

  517. decide whether to do that or not. Am I

  518. going to go to the right? Am I going to

  519. go to the left? Am I going to believe

  520. and obey God or not? Will I trust his

  521. promises that he's made? Will I follow

  522. the precepts that he's laid out for me

  523. to guide my life? A life of faith

  524. requires wisdom because we can't really

  525. trust God. We can't really follow God

  526. unless we believe that he's in control,

  527. right? Unless we believe that God can

  528. actually come through with what he's

  529. promised, there's no way to really have

  530. any confidence in him. So wisdom reminds

  531. us that God is in control. Abraham

  532. forgot for a little while. He didn't

  533. trust God in Egypt to provide for him in

  534. the land that he was already in. And

  535. then when he got to Egypt, he didn't

  536. trust God to take care of him. So he

  537. lied about his wife to protect himself.

  538. And now he's back and he has another big

  539. decision to make. Abraham has to decide

  540. to trust God or not when it comes to how

  541. to deal with this problem between he and

  542. his nephew. And this time Abram chooses

  543. to trust the Lord.

  544. He takes initiative to make peace

  545. between he and Lot. And he says, "Let

  546. there be no strife between us." And then

  547. amazingly,

  548. Abram gives Lot the choice of where to

  549. go. He says, "If you go to the left,

  550. I'll go to the right." He puts it in

  551. Lot's hands. And this was really, really

  552. countercultural for the time. They lived

  553. in a patriarchal society, which means

  554. that Abram, as the oldest man in the

  555. family, would have had all the

  556. authority. And Lot, even though he was

  557. rich as part of Abram's group and part

  558. of Abram's family, he would have been

  559. completely subject to whatever Abram

  560. decided. So Abram could have very well

  561. said, "Hey, look, Lot, we got too much

  562. stuff and you got to take your stuff and

  563. you got to go somewhere else. I don't

  564. care where it is. You just got to go

  565. somewhere else because I'm going to stay

  566. here in this best part and then you got

  567. to go figure it out." That would have

  568. been culturally appropriate for Abram.

  569. That would have what Lot expected

  570. honestly. And so in the moment he has to

  571. decide what to do. And as I was reading

  572. this, I thought, I wonder what the

  573. wisdom of the world might have said.

  574. Like if I was in that situation, like

  575. what were what would be some of the

  576. things that I would have considered? And

  577. it sounded like Abram, you gota you got

  578. to protect your stuff, man.

  579. You gota you got to protect your

  580. investment at all costs. If you're not

  581. careful right here, you're going to lose

  582. what you have. Uh look out for yourself

  583. first. Think about your immediate

  584. family.

  585. Think about all that you could lose.

  586. Yeah. Like it might be hard for Lot if

  587. you just like drop a decision on him,

  588. but he's got to he's got to worry about

  589. himself, right? He's he's got to take

  590. care of himself. You have to take care

  591. of you. There's too many sheep. There's

  592. not enough grass. And you got to look

  593. out for yourself or you're going to be

  594. in trouble.

  595. You ever feel pressure to like protect

  596. what you have, to take care of what you

  597. have? Yeah, of course you do. That's

  598. that's not a that's not a bad desire or

  599. inclination that you have. In fact, when

  600. God created humanity, he gave us

  601. dominion over creation. And he says,

  602. "Take care of this thing that I've made.

  603. Take care of this thing that I've

  604. entrusted to you. Part of the image of

  605. God that dwells in every human is a

  606. desire to be a caretaker. Now, that's

  607. marred by sin and we have to be careful

  608. to not distort it and pervert it, but

  609. it's a desire that lives in you because

  610. it's how God made you and it's good. So,

  611. this isn't suggesting that Abraham needs

  612. to throw all logical thinking out the

  613. window and just make a careless

  614. decision,

  615. right? It's not suggesting that he be

  616. overly passive about what to do in this

  617. situation.

  618. It would be easy to think that, man,

  619. Abraham is he's about to get taken

  620. advantage of, right? He might be about

  621. to throw away everything that God's

  622. given him.

  623. In truth, Abraham's not being careless

  624. with his possessions. He's not being too

  625. passive. What he's actually doing is

  626. he's making an intentional faithfilled

  627. decision

  628. to value his relationships over his

  629. portfolio.

  630. First, his relationship with Lot and

  631. then more importantly his relationship

  632. with God that we'll see later. And in

  633. the moment, Abraham believes that God is

  634. in control and he has this promise from

  635. chapter 12. And so because of all these

  636. things, now Abram can live by this

  637. precept that we get all these years

  638. later in Philippians 2. Do nothing from

  639. selfish ambition or conceit, but in

  640. humility count others more significant

  641. than yourselves.

  642. Let each of you look not only to his own

  643. interests, but also to the interest of

  644. others. The world says, "Look at

  645. yourself first."

  646. The wisdom of God says, "Be humble.

  647. Serve others." And when Abram does it,

  648. do you notice what happens? Remember,

  649. think back to the promise. Why does God

  650. say that he'll bless Abram?

  651. So that you will be blessing to others.

  652. And look what he's already doing. He

  653. realizes that God is the one who's

  654. blessed him. And he turns around and he

  655. blesses Lot. The promise is already

  656. starting to come true in his life.

  657. So what does Lot do? He immediately

  658. takes advantage of Abraham's kindness

  659. and he takes the best spot for himself,

  660. right? It says

  661. he lifted up his eyes and he saw that

  662. the Jordan Valley was well watered like,

  663. "Oh man, this is the good place." And so

  664. Lot chose for himself all the Jordan

  665. Valley and he journeyed east and they

  666. separated from each other. While Abram

  667. is thinking about preserving their

  668. relationship, Lot seems to be thinking

  669. about what's best for his financial

  670. future.

  671. I love this picture.

  672. This idea of Abram graciously extending

  673. this offer to Lot. Like I love how his

  674. hand is on his arm and Lot is looking at

  675. all that he sees and instead of being

  676. moved by the kindness of his uncle, he's

  677. caught up in just the stuff that he

  678. sees. I want that place. I want that

  679. thing and nothing else matters.

  680. Abram's made a faithfilled decision

  681. because he believes God and Lot has made

  682. this quick decision based on what he can

  683. see. Right?

  684. So, if we set aside the fact that this

  685. just seems to be selfish on Lot's part,

  686. like let's put that aside. There's also

  687. there's something else going on. It

  688. says, "Abram settled in the cities of

  689. Canaan, while Lot settled among the

  690. cities of the valley and moved his tent

  691. as far as Sodom." And it goes on to say

  692. that the men of Sodom were wicked and

  693. great sinners against the Lord. And

  694. guess what? Lot would have known that.

  695. It wasn't a surprise. He didn't get

  696. there and was like, "Oh, this is worse

  697. than I thought." You know, those cities

  698. would have had a reputation that Lot

  699. would have known about. And so, he moves

  700. there on purpose. And so this isn't just

  701. a decision to be selfish. It's a

  702. decision to move away from the center of

  703. what God is doing and move to the

  704. fringes of where he is. He moves farther

  705. away and he moves closer to sin.

  706. Wisdom

  707. would have been Matthew chapter 6. Seek

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  708. first the kingdom of God and his

  709. righteousness and then all these things

  710. will be added to you. I love this verse

  711. because it's such a clear example of

  712. what we're talking about. If you look at

  713. it this way, seek first the kingdom of

  714. God and his righteousness. That's a

  715. precept.

  716. That's a rule that God gives us to

  717. follow. Do this and all these things

  718. will be added to you. That's a promise

  719. to believe.

  720. You do one before the other. And you

  721. have to do the sec. You have to you have

  722. to believe the second one to make it

  723. possible for you to do the first one.

  724. Right? love the Bible for the way that

  725. God puts this wisdom before us. The

  726. wisdom that Abraham uh sorry his name is

  727. Abram right now. It's Abraham later but

  728. uh the wisdom that Abram gained by

  729. believing the promise that God made him

  730. from and the then also the wisdom that

  731. he gained from his experience in Egypt

  732. is starting to transform him starting to

  733. change his heart. He trusts God with

  734. this major life decision. Then he sees

  735. God work. He makes a faithfilled

  736. unconventional choice because he really

  737. believes that God's in control. That's

  738. wisdom. Lot seems to make his choice

  739. without really considering God at all.

  740. And there's going to be some pretty

  741. serious consequences that we'll see in

  742. the weeks to come in Lot's life. So,

  743. let's read our last section.

  744. Let's pick up in verse 14.

  745. So the Lord said to Abram, after Lot had

  746. separated from him, "Lift up your eyes

  747. and look from the place where you are,

  748. northward and southward and eastward and

  749. westward. And all the land that you see,

  750. I will give to you and to your offspring

  751. forever.

  752. I will make your offspring as the dust

  753. of the earth, so that if one can count

  754. the dust of the earth, your offspring

  755. can also be counted. Arise, walk through

  756. the length and breadth of the land, for

  757. I will give it to you. So Abram moved

  758. his tent, came and settled by the oaks

  759. of Mamry, which were at Hebrin, and he

  760. settled there, and he built an altar to

  761. the Lord. Wisdom puts our possessions

  762. into proper perspective. Wisdom reminds

  763. us that God is in control. And finally,

  764. wisdom grounds us in the grace and in

  765. the goodness of God. So Abram's made his

  766. decision. So is Lot. So let me ask you a

  767. question. You ever made a decision, good

  768. or bad,

  769. it's done. Now you got to live in it.

  770. And you thought,

  771. what did I just do?

  772. Like even when it's a good decision

  773. sometimes, right? Like, have you ever

  774. followed the Lord in faith in something

  775. that you thought, I I don't know if I

  776. can do that? Like, I or I'm afraid or

  777. that feels hard or that feels

  778. impossible, but you did it right. You

  779. stepped into something that the Lord

  780. called you to do and now you're in it.

  781. You can't get out of it. And you ever

  782. you ever think,

  783. I don't know if I should have done that.

  784. Like, I did that in a moment.

  785. Um, or on the other side, you ever made

  786. a decision that you shouldn't have made

  787. like a bad relationship that you got

  788. into or decision to do something sinful

  789. to benefit yourself or to comfort

  790. yourself or just a mistake you made in

  791. the moment. You ever do something like

  792. that and then a few minutes, a few

  793. hours, a few days later, you thought,

  794. "Man,

  795. should have done that."

  796. And like maybe Oh, like maybe I've

  797. ruined everything.

  798. You know, I made this decision and I

  799. don't know how to recover from this one.

  800. Like I don't know how God uses me moving

  801. forward because of what I've done.

  802. Abram's going to have both experiences

  803. in his story. And something that's

  804. really important for us to see here in

  805. the midst of this is it's tempting to

  806. read this story and think that the point

  807. is

  808. do what Abram did. Be like Abram and

  809. make all the right decisions and then

  810. God's grace and his goodness will be a

  811. part of your life. Do all the right

  812. stuff equals

  813. experience the grace of God.

  814. Decisions matter, okay? And decisions

  815. have consequences. We're going to see

  816. that in the life of Abram and Lot.

  817. But it's not a way to earn God's grace.

  818. It's the same thing with Lot, right?

  819. There's something really beautiful that

  820. happens in scripture like Lot is not

  821. painted in a good light in this passage

  822. and not so much in subsequent chapters

  823. either. Okay, Lot makes a bad decision

  824. and there are some real consequences

  825. that are coming for for Lot's life. But

  826. over in second Peter, Lot gets a mention

  827. and he's called a righteous man.

  828. There's a little bit of mystery to it.

  829. like we don't know exactly what happened

  830. but there's a redemption story for Lot

  831. that happens in scripture and then even

  832. in the life of Abram like his life is a

  833. mess at times. So again it's not be like

  834. Abram and make all the right decisions

  835. and then experience the grace of God.

  836. Abram has just had a major failure in

  837. chapter 12. I mean that's bad to lie and

  838. say your wife's your sister. That's

  839. messed up, right?

  840. And what's more messed up is he's going

  841. to do it again in chapter 20. Like the

  842. same thing as if it never happened the

  843. first time. Like he gets in trouble

  844. again and he's like, "Well, we ran this

  845. play last time, so let's just let's go

  846. back to that one."

  847. God's grace and goodness in Abram's life

  848. is not because Abram's earned it. It's

  849. not because he's made all the wise

  850. decisions. We get that backwards.

  851. What we have to realize is that wisdom

  852. grounds us in the goodness and grace of

  853. God. And it's always there. And what

  854. happens is when we realize that and when

  855. we trust him, we start to make wise

  856. decisions as a result of his grace, not

  857. as a way to get it.

  858. That is good news for us, right?

  859. Because whether you're Abram in chapter

  860. 13 and you've made a good decision to

  861. step into something hard because God

  862. called it called you into it and now

  863. you're looking at this long road ahead

  864. of you going man I made that decision

  865. but I don't know I don't know how to

  866. walk in it for the rest of my life. You

  867. ground yourself in the grace and

  868. goodness of God. That's wisdom.

  869. And if you're on the opposite side of

  870. that coin right now and you think, I

  871. just did this thing or I did this thing

  872. 10 years ago and I don't know how to

  873. recover from that thing. I don't know

  874. that God really forgives me. I don't

  875. know that I can be of any real use to

  876. anyone in ministry. You do the same

  877. thing. You ground yourself in the grace

  878. and the goodness of God and you believe

  879. his promises.

  880. You believe his promise that if he calls

  881. you into something, he'll be faithful to

  882. equip you to do it.

  883. And you believe his promise

  884. that if you confess your sin, he's

  885. faithful and just to forgive us and to

  886. cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

  887. That's wisdom. Wisdom is not living in

  888. your guilt, feeling worthless.

  889. It's remembering that God's grace is

  890. present.

  891. It's waiting for you to believe it.

  892. That's the beauty of scripture.

  893. Abram

  894. sort of book ends this chapter with with

  895. something that's really important. I

  896. think this is beautiful.

  897. The Lord tells Abram, "Lift up your

  898. eyes." This is this is after he's made

  899. the decision. Lot has taken all the good

  900. land. Does that sound familiar?

  901. Because this is what Lot did, right?

  902. says, "Lot lifted up his eyes and he saw

  903. what he wanted and he took it." And all

  904. of a sudden, Abram is getting the short

  905. end of the stick. So, after Abram's made

  906. that decision of faith, God comes back

  907. and he says, "Abram, you lift up your

  908. eyes and look, I'm going to give you all

  909. that stuff. It doesn't matter that you

  910. just lost the best part of it because

  911. you gave it away.

  912. This promise doesn't change.

  913. And then here's these statements again.

  914. That's what God comes back to. Abram, I

  915. will. I will. I will. It's the grace and

  916. the goodness of God in Abram's life that

  917. carries him along, not his effort. He

  918. makes good, wise decisions because of

  919. what God has done in his life, because

  920. he believes him.

  921. So Abram moved his tent, came and

  922. settled by the oaks of memory, which at

  923. Hebra and there he built an altar to the

  924. Lord. That's how the chapter begins and

  925. it ends. Right? When Abram messed up in

  926. Egypt, he goes right back to the last

  927. place that he had an altar and he

  928. worships. And after Abram has made a

  929. faithfilled decision, what does he do?

  930. He sets up shop in his new place. He

  931. builds an altar and he worships.

  932. Wisdom is grounded in worship

  933. and in the goodness and the grace of

  934. God.

  935. for us. Let's don't get it twisted to

  936. think that we're earning God's grace by

  937. making all the right decisions or that

  938. you're beyond it because you've made all

  939. the wrong decisions.

  940. Father, would you remind us that your

  941. word is true and trustworthy? When you

  942. say you'll do something, you will. Help

  943. us to live according to your promises

  944. and your precepts. Teach us to be full

  945. of faith. Give us wisdom so that we can

  946. live a life following you and loving you

  947. and knowing you more and more and more.

  948. We love you. Thank you. Amen.
