  1. Amen. Thank you, James. Um, this is the

  2. Millennium Tower. It's in San Francisco.

  3. 58 stories of luxury condominiums,

  4. retail, mixeduse, offices, and uh,

  5. commercial um, space in here. And, uh,

  6. it's a really great tower except for a

  7. couple features. Since 2009, it has sunk

  8. into the ground 18 in and started to

  9. lean a bit.

  10. Now, don't worry about that because the

  11. engineers have come behind it and

  12. instead of the I learned a lot about

  13. building skyscrapers this week. Uh the

  14. friction piles that it's now sitting on

  15. that only go down 80 feet. Bedrock is

  16. 200 feet. You can do the math. They put

  17. steel pylons around the perimeter of the

  18. building and uh those do go down the

  19. full 200 f feet. One problem is that

  20. this has created a dishing effect where

  21. the outside of the building is staying

  22. put but the inside is still sagging just

  23. a bit.

  24. Um never fear though because officials

  25. tell you that it's safe to occupy.

  26. But they will tell you also that uh if

  27. the sinking and leaning persist, they

  28. have some concerns over things like the

  29. elevators and the plumbing and the

  30. electrical and other such things you

  31. need to run a building like that. Now,

  32. um

  33. the other thing I found interesting

  34. about the Millennium Tower is it's

  35. become a bit of a tourist attraction in

  36. San Francisco. So when people now go to

  37. San Francisco and you'll likely do it if

  38. you go is you're like Uber guy take me

  39. to the Millennium Tower. You're going to

  40. take a picture outside this which does

  41. have some precedent of something we do

  42. as global people of like oh leaning

  43. tower. I'm going to go check that out.

  44. which like as I sort of thought about

  45. Pisa, I was like, man, I wonder why the

  46. engineers didn't come up with the thing

  47. that has been holding up this tower for

  48. years and years is tourists. Like, I

  49. still don't understand like what their

  50. problem is. Obviously, their engineers

  51. didn't go to&m or UT. Um, here's my

  52. question. Would you, now that you know

  53. about the Millennium Tower, would you

  54. purchase property in the Millennium

  55. Tower?

  56. No.

  57. Why? Because you're not an idiot. That's

  58. why. Um,

  59. here's the here's the thing. You

  60. wouldn't because you do not trust the

  61. strength of the building,

  62. which gives us a very important faith

  63. principle, which is this.

  64. The strength of the object in which you

  65. place your faith is the strength of the

  66. faith you have in that object.

  67. Meaning, if the object that you're

  68. placing your faith in is strong, your

  69. faith can be strong. But with the

  70. millennium tower, where your faith is

  71. weak, notice your faith is weak.

  72. Question.

  73. God, strong or weak?

  74. Strong. Is he trustworthy?

  75. Faithful 100%.

  76. Strong God. Question just between us. No

  77. one else is listening. Is your is your

  78. faith in him always strong?

  79. No. Why is that?

  80. What we just said, the principle is if

  81. the thing is strong, if the object's

  82. strong, your faith can be strong. Why is

  83. it that sometimes you like me, my fa

  84. starts to waver. It starts to shake. It

  85. starts to look more like Millennium

  86. Tower kind of faith. I think it's also a

  87. strength problem because what happens in

  88. your life and in my life is something

  89. comes up that seems stronger. It seems

  90. more um difficult. It seems more like uh

  91. oh, this could really cause some havoc

  92. in my life if it goes sideways. Like

  93. that comes up and it starts to go okay

  94. which is stronger that I'm worried about

  95. or God. And what we do is if we focus on

  96. that, our faith goes

  97. because I know like you, like me, I

  98. worry. I get anxious. I worry about my

  99. kids. I worry about my health. I worry

  100. about my parents aging. I worry about

  101. the stock market. I worry about tariffs.

  102. I don't know why I worry about tariffs,

  103. but apparently I have to worry about

  104. tariffs. I'm worried about the next

  105. election. I'm worried about the uh

  106. direction of the country. I'm worried

  107. about what's happening in my

  108. neighborhood with that guy who doesn't

  109. mow his lawn. I'm worried about

  110. I'm worried about how much I worry.

  111. And what happens is is if I focus on

  112. these things, I don't know if you've

  113. noticed this. I've noticed it, but

  114. that's tends to be when my faith starts

  115. to waver.

  116. It starts to get shaky. Even though has

  117. God changed? No. So, how do you fix the

  118. delta?

  119. How do you the gap between where your

  120. faith is some days and where it can be

  121. and should be with who our God is.

  122. That's what I want to talk about in a

  123. way that isn't millennium tower. Let's

  124. try to shore this thing up so the

  125. building stops leaning because sometimes

  126. your faith leans

  127. and God wants to bring it back. How do

  128. you do that? How do you strengthen your

  129. faith?

  130. What does God have to say about that?

  131. That's what I want to talk about. If you

  132. have your Bibles, go ahead and start to

  133. open them. Genesis chapter 15. And what

    Genesis 15 chapter mention

  134. we're going to do is we're going to

  135. unpack now the definition that we've

  136. been leveraging these several weeks as

  137. we've been looking at Abraham

  138. that this is going to give us. It's it's

  139. been embedded here the entire time. But

  140. faith is believing the truth about one

  141. who God is. What kind of God is this?

  142. What kind of building is this? What kind

  143. of strength does our God have? What kind

  144. of character does he have? and what has

  145. he said? What's he promised? What's he

  146. committed himself to? Those are the two

  147. pieces that if you and I lean in there,

  148. if we focus there versus all the things

  149. that have our attention that tend to

  150. weaken our faith, that's how you grow

  151. it. That's when you notice like getting

  152. a little shaky. Where do you need to

  153. look? How do you strengthen it? Who he

  154. is and what he said.

  155. Our faith grows stronger when we look at

  156. God's character. When we remember that.

  157. So this is Genesis 15 and we're going to

  158. start in verse one.

  159. After these things, the word of the Lord

  160. came to Abram in a vision. Fear not,

  161. Abram. I am your shield. Your reward

  162. shall be very great.

  163. If you remember chapter 14 last week, um

  164. Abram gets off a huge military victory,

  165. defeated a bunch of kings, successful

  166. hostage rescue is what he just pulled

  167. off. Turns out he's a pretty good

  168. military leader, a tactician, organizer

  169. of men in order to defeat an enemy. And

  170. so I find it very interesting that the

  171. very next story

  172. is Abraham's afraid

  173. God has to come and say, "Abram, fear

  174. not." Why is that? He's on a high, man.

  175. I JUST KICKED BUTT AND I took names. I'm

  176. the man.

  177. Well, I think a little clue is in what

  178. he says. He says, "I'm your shield."

  179. Same word that if you looked at a Roman

  180. sold soldier of the day, what would they

  181. have? They would have a shield.

  182. And so, this is my guess. If I'm Abram,

  183. I'm wondering after a little time has

  184. passed, I'm like, "Huh, I wonder if all

  185. those guys defeated are starting to

  186. gather their forces again. I wonder if

  187. they're regaining their strength. I

  188. wonder if I'm going to wake up one

  189. morning, I'm going to look across the

  190. horizon and here they come.

  191. I think he got afraid. The same thing

  192. that happens with you and I when after a

  193. nice victory, what are we worried about?

  194. Losing whatever we got in the victory.

  195. The other thing I want to point your

  196. attention to is the word vision.

  197. That this comes to Abram in a vision.

  198. Interesting. This is the only You'll

  199. find it in the first five books of your

  200. Old Testament. No one else gets a

  201. vision. Later on in your Old Testament,

  202. guys like Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel,

  203. they'll get a vision. It's the only time

  204. it happens in the opening in the opening

  205. pages of your Bible. It means this that

  206. whatever God's about to do, whatever

  207. he's about to say, whatever he's about

  208. to reveal to Abram, this is special.

  209. This is going to be a clarifying moment.

  210. Pay attention, Abram. Pay attention,

  211. Lake View, because what God's about to

  212. is going to be helpful not only for him

  213. but for us. And I don't know about you,

  214. but if I'm Abram, I hear God show up and

  215. he says, "Hey, Eric, man, fear not,

  216. dude. Your reward shall be very great.

  217. You know what I'm going to do? Heck

  218. yeah, God. That's what I'm talking

  219. about."

  220. Man, I was struggling there for a

  221. minute.

  222. How does Abram respond?

  223. But Abram said, "Oh Lord God, what you

  224. will you give me? For I continue

  225. childless, and the heir of my house is

  226. Eleazar of Damascus."

  227. And Abram said, "Behold, you've given me

  228. no offspring, and a member of my

  229. household will be my heir." Now, if you

  230. remember back a few weeks ago, we were

  231. in Genesis 12. How did the whole

  232. relationship between Abram and God

  233. begin? What promise did God give him

  234. among a few? He said,"Abram, you're

  235. going to be a great nation." Awesome.

  236. Love that. Can't wait for that to

  237. happen. How does a great nation begin?

  238. You got to at least have to have son

  239. number one.

  240. What's happened for Abram?

  241. Child hasn't shown up yet. Here's what

  242. you don't see. Um, between chapters 12

  243. and 15, 10 years have elapsed

  244. over those chapters. Now question

  245. friends,

  246. how are you at waiting 10 years for

  247. something? You're like, I can't wait 10

  248. minutes.

  249. Neither can I. So at some level you're

  250. like, Abram, I get it.

  251. Little anxious. God, you said,

  252. where's the kid?

  253. Like this guy picked up my servant

  254. Eleazar. Like the way culture works,

  255. he's going to be my heir. Why is that?

  256. How does God respond?

  257. And behold, the word of the Lord came to

  258. him.

  259. This man shall not be your heir. Your

  260. very own son shall be your heir.

  261. What kind of God does Abram have? What

  262. kind of God do you have? Is he a God

  263. who, like you might expect, like, "Hey,

  264. Abram, enough with the questions. I told

  265. you once. Would you just be Wait.

  266. No.

  267. He's He's a good dad. He's like, Abram,

  268. I got you.

  269. That No, don't worry. He's He's not that

  270. guy. What you just told me. Notice

  271. Abram, your way to figure out how to get

  272. my promise done is not the way I'm going

  273. to get my promise done. Did you notice

  274. that?

  275. Could you imagine someone trying to help

  276. God out in getting a promise that he

  277. made done?

  278. Just me then.

  279. And then in one of the most poignant

  280. pictures, verse five,

  281. and he brought him outside and said,

  282. "Look toward heaven

  283. and number the stars if you're able to

  284. number them." Then he said to him, "So

  285. shall your offspring be."

  286. God's not there physically. This is a

  287. vision. God's speaking to him in a

  288. vision. But I imagine the way the text

  289. reads, it's almost like if God was there

  290. physically, he's like a dad with Abram

  291. who kind of puts his arm around him. He

  292. says, "Abram, you want to walk outside?

  293. You want to look up at the night sky

  294. with me? You see all those stars, Abram?

  295. You see that amazing canopy?

  296. If you can count all of those, that's

  297. how many descendants you're going to

  298. have."

  299. And I imagine at some Abram's like,

  300. "Whoa."

  301. And what God is doing is he's

  302. reaffirming for Abram. I promise you

  303. that one son you're waiting for isn't

  304. going to stay one son. He is going to

  305. But here's the other thing I think God

  306. is saying to Abram. Abram, as you look

  307. up at that night sky and as you see all

  308. those stars, I'm the God who made them.

  309. I'm the God who can do that.

  310. Abram, I promise you, I got your kids.

  311. If I can do that, Abram, I can certainly

  312. deliver a son to you. And again, notice

  313. the kindness of God. He isn't like, I'm

  314. tired of your belly aching, Abram, and

  315. why can't you get it?

  316. It's like a father and son looking up at

  317. the night sky and his dad pointing stuff

  318. out to him.

  319. and Abram gets it.

  320. Genesis chapter 15 and when we get there

    Genesis 15 chapter mention

  321. on Easter, Genesis 22

  322. are kind of the two peaks in the life

  323. and the story of Abram. How do we know

  324. he gets it? Look how he responds in

  325. verse 6.

  326. And he believed

  327. and he believed the Lord and he counted

  328. it to him as righteousness.

  329. Here's what I want you to notice.

  330. Abram, if he was focused on the promise,

  331. it would have read

  332. something like, "And Abram believed in

  333. the promise of the Lord that he made to

  334. him and then he counted it to him as

  335. righteousness." That's not what your

  336. Bible says. What your Bible says is he

  337. believed the Lord.

  338. If this was a movie, here's what I think

  339. is happening. They're outside the tent.

  340. God's there. He's got his arm around

  341. Abram. The camera shot goes right in and

  342. focuses on Abram's face as he looks up

  343. at God and he goes, "Okay, I get it. I

  344. trust you."

  345. Do you see that?

  346. What has flipped for Abram is he is not

  347. worried. so much about the promise. Yes,

  348. the promise is important. But where is

  349. his faith now more firmly rooted

  350. in the character of who his God is?

  351. You're telling me you can do that, God?

  352. All right. Doesn't matter what promise.

  353. My answer is I believe you. You promised

  354. me about kids. I believe you. You

  355. promised me about land. We'll see that

  356. in a second. I believe you. You promise

  357. me about other things. You're going to

  358. protect me from the guys I'm worried

  359. about.

  360. I believe you.

  361. Doesn't matter what the promise is. The

  362. character of your God is where your

  363. faith rests.

  364. Now, the thing I love

  365. about this story is for me personally,

  366. God did something very similar.

  367. Let me explain.

  368. In 2002,

  369. April, May, I am in Bishquek,

  370. Kyrgyzstan. I know you vacation there

  371. almost every other year. You bought a

  372. time share. So, you're like, Bishquek,

  373. love some Bishkek. You're like, I've

  374. never been to her of Bishkek. Um, if you

  375. find Afghanistan, go about three stands

  376. north and you'll find Kyrgyzstan. If you

  377. hit Kazakhstan, you've gone too far.

  378. just go back south. Uh we were based

  379. there spring into the fall of 2002

  380. doing missions in Afghanistan. And as

  381. part of that time, uh you would end up

  382. flying at night a lot. And so what would

  383. happen is you get on the night page and

  384. you would brief your flight at 1000 p.m.

  385. You would take off at midnight and it's

  386. about an hour flight from Bishquek to

  387. the northern border of Afghanistan. You

  388. would meet a tanker there. You'd get gas

  389. and then you'd fly your 4hour mission

  390. overhead in Afghanistan.

  391. After your 4-hour mission, you would go

  392. hit another tanker on the way out and

  393. then make the one-hour trip home. What

  394. was fun about that is all the awesome

  395. sunrises as you're landing at 6:00 a.m.

  396. And then as you look down, that's where

  397. the Himalaya mountains begin on the west

  398. side. And you can see how they just

  399. stretch out as far as the eye can see.

  400. Amazing. But here's the other thing I

  401. noticed. For four hours flying on night

  402. vision goggles, there's a lot you can

  403. see that you can't see with the naked

  404. eye. So like for you when you go outside

  405. right in Steiner

  406. Austin proper, can you see that many

  407. stars? No. You're like, I can see two

  408. stars. That's how many stars I can see.

  409. But when you're at 30,000 ft on night

  410. vision goggles overhead Afghanistan

  411. where there's only really two cities uh

  412. that have any real lighting avail the

  413. rest of the it's just dark. It's just

  414. dark. You can look up under NVGs

  415. and there's more stars than you can see

  416. on that slide right there.

  417. I'm telling you, there are so many stars

  418. up there that you can't It's just

  419. amazing. Like, I would look under my

  420. MVGs and I'd flip them up. I'd be like,

  421. "Flip them down, flip them up." I was

  422. like, "Oh, that's amazing." Here's the

  423. other thing that you can see on NVGs.

  424. How many of you have seen a shooting

  425. star?

  426. Yeah. Have you seen a bunch? I've seen

  427. one or two, you know, on they're

  428. happening all the time. Like you're

  429. sitting there flying. He's likew

  430. and I'm like this is amazing. Oh, I'm

  431. flying. Where am I? Okay, there's my

  432. wingman. I'm okay.

  433. Every night for like two months.

  434. It was just amazing.

  435. And somewhere along the line, I felt

  436. like the Lord tell me, "Hey, Eric,

  437. if I figured out how to do all this, do

  438. you think I can handle the challenges in

  439. your life.

  440. And I can't tell you how many times as

  441. I've continued to walk with Jesus and

  442. just like you, I get anxious. I get

  443. fearful. I have no idea how this is

  444. going to turn out. I'm scared.

  445. Like God will say something like, "Hey,

  446. Eric, I figured out how to speak the

  447. world into existence.

  448. Don't you think I can figure out that

  449. problem you're so worried about?

  450. This is not hyperbole. What I'm about to

  451. say,

  452. this issue is the root issue in all of

  453. your problems.

  454. In all of our problems, yours and mine,

  455. this is the root issue. Who is your God?

  456. Let me give you an example.

  457. Why do you worry about about um your

  458. future

  459. because at a root level we all struggle

  460. believing that God you really do have a

  461. good plan for my life.

  462. Why do we get worried that someone will

  463. love us?

  464. Because we ultimately struggle to

  465. believe God do you really love me?

  466. Why do we get worried about money and

  467. the economy?

  468. Because God, I really struggle to

  469. believe that you're going to provide for

  470. me no matter what.

  471. Why do we get worried about our kids?

  472. Because we struggle to believe that if

  473. we're not there hovering over them,

  474. making sure every decision they make is

  475. in line with what we want them.

  476. God, can you really handle my kids?

  477. Can you really take care of them?

  478. Why do we get worried about what other

  479. people think of us when we leave the

  480. room?

  481. Because we struggle to believe what God

  482. thinks about us.

  483. Why do we get worried like when Abram we

  484. have to wait for something?

  485. Because we struggle to believe that is

  486. God really going to come through for me.

  487. Does your God lack any power or ability?

  488. No.

  489. Is he the kind of God who will hang you

  490. out to dry?

  491. that he'll forget about. Oh yeah, I

  492. forgot about Eric again. How's he doing?

  493. Holy Spirit, didn't you have him?

  494. Will he do that?

  495. Will he do it even one time?

  496. Right? He is strong. When our faith is

  497. wavering, what we remember is to look

  498. back at him. Don't look at the thing

  499. that's making our faith waver. Now,

  500. please hear me. Please hear me. This

  501. also isn't polyiana thinking. This isn't

  502. rosecolored glasses, right? This isn't

  503. like, oh, just do that and then all the

  504. very real challenges and difficulties

  505. and health scares that you have, poof,

  506. go away.

  507. No, what it does in the moment is it

  508. puts steel beams under you

  509. so that you by grace can move forward.

  510. Notice regardless of what the future

  511. holds. Why?

  512. Because you know better who your God is.

  513. And if he can do that and he just spoke

  514. it,

  515. whatever it is you are anxious about, I

  516. promise you he has it. Yes.

  517. The character of your God. That's the

  518. first place where you go to strengthen

  519. your faith. The second is to rest in his

  520. promises. Get back to what he said. So

  521. look at verse seven.

  522. And he said to him, Is God speaking now?

  523. I'm the Lord who brought you out from of

  524. the Calaldanss to give you this land to

  525. possess. But he said, "Oh Lord God, how

  526. am I to know that I shall possess it?"

  527. And what's going to happen next is God

  528. is going to give him something to do

  529. that on the face of it, you're just

  530. going to scratch your head and be like,

  531. "What in the world is going on?" N he

  532. said to him, "Bring me a hepher, three

  533. years old, a female goat, three years

  534. old, a ram, three years old, a turtle

  535. dove, and a young pigeon."

  536. Verse 10, "And he brought him all these,

  537. cut them in half, and laid each half

  538. over against the other, but he did not

  539. cut the birds in half." And then verse

  540. 11, and when the birds of prey came down

  541. on the carcasses, Abram drove them away.

  542. You've probably done this this past

  543. week. I'm guessing you're like, "Yeah,

  544. this is what I do. I cut animals in half

  545. and I lay them." No. Okay. What's going

  546. on? Um ancient near east culture, how do

  547. you ratify

  548. um or codify or make firm an agreement

  549. or a promise between two parties, right?

  550. In our culture, we don't do what we just

  551. read about here, right? Like, so just

  552. think about when you if you've ever

  553. bought a piece of property, right? You

  554. go in, you buy a house, you buy some

  555. real estate, you buy some land, and you

  556. go into either the title company or the

  557. um the lawyer, the real estate lawyer's

  558. office, and they've got a stack of

  559. papers like well, they're like this.

  560. That's how much there. And you start to

  561. sign, right? Because we are a largely

  562. literate culture, and we document

  563. things. And so when you agree, when you

  564. get into contract, a contractual

  565. relationship with someone, you have to

  566. sign. So, they give you all the pages,

  567. right? Here's the inspections on your

  568. home that you're getting. Okay, great.

  569. You sign as the buyer, the seller signs,

  570. and then the bank shows up and they have

  571. their piece of paper if you're borrowing

  572. money to buy it, right? And they're

  573. like, "This stack of paper." And they're

  574. like, "Pay us back. Sign here." What's

  575. this piece of paper? Really? Pay us

  576. back. Okay, I'll sign there. What's the

  577. next one? You got to give us your first

  578. kid if you don't pay us back. Okay,

  579. great. Thanks. Right. That's how we do

  580. it. That's how we do it. You sign,

  581. right?

  582. This is how you do it in the first

  583. century.

  584. So basically, just notice something.

  585. Abram knew what to do with the animals.

  586. God didn't have to tell him. So here's

  587. how it works. You and I are going to get

  588. into a covenant. We're going to get into

  589. an agreement where I promised to do some

  590. things and you promised to do some

  591. things. So there we are. We get some

  592. animals. We cut them in two and we

  593. separate them. You heard it. And they're

  594. facing each other. And then it forms uh

  595. like a walkway. And then what happens is

  596. you and I as the two parties in the

  597. covenant walk through the pieces.

  598. And symbolically what we are saying is

  599. if I do not uphold my end of the

  600. promise, you can do to me what we just

  601. did to these animals.

  602. I have no idea what happened to the

  603. birds. They didn't want to cut those in

  604. pieces. Maybe they're small. Feathers

  605. get everywhere. I don't know.

  606. My best guess is with the birds, you

  607. just kind of ring the neck and just put

  608. them down dead. I know that's a lovely

  609. thought.

  610. And then the piece, a very interesting

  611. detail in verse 11 about the birds of

  612. prey coming down and Abram has to shoe

  613. him away. Like that's the just the icing

  614. on the covenant cake, so to speak.

  615. Because what you're basically saying is,

  616. uh, just so you know, if you do not

  617. uphold your end of the bargain, I'm

  618. going to leave your severed body out

  619. here and let the birds have you.

  620. Isn't that fun? You're like, I'll take

  621. the title company.

  622. God and Abram are going to get into a

  623. covenantal

  624. arrangement. It's a covenant enactment

  625. ceremony.

  626. Pieces are there. Everything's set up.

  627. What happens? Verse 12.

  628. As the sun was going down, a deep sleep

  629. fell on Abram. And behold, notice this,

  630. dreadful and great darkness fell upon

  631. him. We'll come back to that. And then

  632. verse 13, God is going to reaffirm some

  633. promises and expand them. So then the

  634. Lord said to Abram, "Know for certain

  635. that your offspring will be sojourers in

  636. a land that is not theirs and will be

  637. servants there, and they will be

  638. afflicted for 400 years." Now remember,

  639. who are the original readers of Genesis

  640. 15? The Israelites, remember, Moses is

  641. the author. He's writing it to them

  642. before they enter the promised land. Why

  643. is that important? Because they're the

  644. first readers and they're like, "Whoa,

  645. that's us. We were the ones who were in

  646. Egypt for 400 years and afflicted." Man,

  647. God was talking to Abram about us. Yes.

  648. Why do I say that? Because Genesis 15

  649. was written to you.

  650. I'll explain that as we go along.

  651. Verse 14. But I will bring judgement on

  652. the nation that they serve. God did

  653. that.

  654. And afterward they shall come out with

  655. great possessions. God did that. Verse

  656. 15. As for you, you shall go out to your

  657. fathers in peace. Now he shifts back to

  658. a promise to Abraham specifically.

  659. As for you, you shall go to your fathers

  660. in peace and sh and you shall be buried

  661. in a good old age, and they shall come

  662. back here in the fourth generation for

  663. the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet

  664. complete.

  665. What God is saying is, Abram, not only

  666. are the promises that I've already made

  667. to you firm, I'm actually doing a lot

  668. more than you could even imagine through

  669. what we're even doing here.

  670. And then verse 17, here's the ceremony.

  671. When the sun had gone down and it was

  672. dark, behold,

  673. a smoking firepot and a flaming torch

  674. passed between the pieces.

  675. On that day the Lord made a covenant. He

  676. made a firm binding promise with Abram

  677. saying to your offspring I give this

  678. land. And then the rest of the chapter

  679. is just the boundaries of the geography

  680. from the river of Egypt to the great

  681. river the river Euphrates to the land of

  682. the Kennites, the Kennesites, the

  683. Canadonites, the Hittites, the

  684. Perizzites that wereame, the Amorites,

  685. the Canaanites, the Gegosites, and the

  686. Jebusites.

  687. Two things, two truths I want you to

  688. notice about the ceremony itself. The

  689. first is smoking firepot,

  690. flaming torch.

  691. Those two words, the smoke and the flame

  692. are going to get repeated throughout the

  693. next books of the Bible where on Mount

  694. Si, God will come down and he'll meet

  695. with Moses. In what form? Smoke and

  696. fire. Same words as Genesis 15. What

  697. else will happen? God will have led by

  698. this point as the Israelites are reading

  699. it. They will have been led by what? How

  700. does God show up in the wilderness? A

  701. pillar of smoke and a pillar of fire.

  702. Same exact words. Other thing you have

  703. to notice,

  704. who walked through the pieces?

  705. God. Did Abram walk through the pieces?

  706. No.

  707. Genesis 15 is a huge paradigm moment for

  708. your Bible. Why? Because what God is

  709. saying as he walks through the pieces is

  710. this covenant is 100% on my shoulders.

  711. This is not up to you, Abram, to fulfill

  712. all the promises that I'm making between

  713. you and I. All of the responsibility

  714. falls on me, Abram. And secondarily,

  715. what God is also saying is, "And if you,

  716. Abram, fail to uphold your part of the

  717. covenant, I get torn to pieces."

  718. Not you.

  719. Does that begin to remind you of

  720. anything

  721. where God himself will be the one torn

  722. apart in the place of someone who

  723. actually committed the crime.

  724. Here's what's

  725. amazing about God's word.

  726. How has Abram done so far in obedience

  727. to God? Perfect.

  728. >> No.

  729. >> Remember the whole thing about lying

  730. about his wife? She's my sister, my

  731. wife. Sorry about that.

  732. Will Abram be perfect going forward? No.

  733. When you read the rest of his life and

  734. you read the the guys who follow and the

  735. families that follow on into the

  736. Israelites, how do they do upholding

  737. their end of the promise?

  738. Failure. Failure. Failure. Big failure.

  739. Failure.

  740. And every place you see, God in his

  741. grace upholds the promise.

  742. So far in your Bible, God has already

  743. made promises not just to Abram, but to

  744. you.

  745. Genesis chapter 3, after the fall, God

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  746. says, "I'm sending a seed of the woman

  747. to do what? Crush the head of your

  748. enemy."

  749. Who has to do that? God does.

  750. Genesis 12, God says to Abram, "Hey, I'm

  751. actually through that great nation I'm

  752. going to make for through you. I'm going

  753. to bless the entire planet."

  754. That was a promise to you

  755. because there is a son who's going to

  756. come who is going to be that blessing.

  757. In Genesis 15, he makes another promise

  758. to you and I,

  759. and I'm going to hit that in a second.

  760. What you're supposed to see in Genesis

  761. 15 is the cross.

  762. And then when the sixth hour had come,

  763. that's noon, there was darkness over the

  764. whole land.

  765. Do you remember verse 12? What happened

  766. in verse 12 with Abram? A deep darkness

  767. falls.

  768. And then notice until the 9th hour,

  769. that's 3 p.m. And at the 9th hour, Jesus

  770. cried with a loud voice, "Eloyd,"

  771. which means, "My God, my God, why have

  772. you forsaken me? What is going on?" In

  773. that moment,

  774. Jesus is already on the cross, his flesh

  775. torn apart.

  776. Why did Why does he cry out?

  777. He doesn't cry out and say, "I'm really

  778. hurting physically."

  779. No, he's being torn apart at a soul

  780. level.

  781. Why? Because as Jesus hangs there on the

  782. cross, what is happening in that moment

  783. is he is becoming your sin and my sin.

  784. And God is placing all the sin, all the

  785. failures to keep the covenant, all the

  786. failures of you and I to measure up and

  787. to live the life we should have lived.

  788. And what God is doing in that moment is

  789. he's judging his son. That Jesus in this

  790. moment is becoming our sin. And what God

  791. is doing in the only time that this ever

  792. happened, God says, "I will now turn

  793. and remove my presence from you." And

  794. Jesus feels it and his soul is torn

  795. apart.

  796. The only time he ever cries out like

  797. this, he's looking up at the heavens.

  798. He's like, "Where are you? Where did you

  799. go?"

  800. So that you and I never will.

  801. What makes heaven heaven and hell hell?

  802. The presence and absence of God.

  803. Why heaven is heaven is because God is

  804. fully there. That's what makes it

  805. amazing. What makes hell so horrific

  806. that that Jesus himself would cry out,

  807. "Please don't misunderstand me. Jesus

  808. does not go to hell. He's feeling what

  809. it would be like.

  810. It's the absence.

  811. It's the absence of God.

  812. And so, back to Genesis 15, as God as

  813. the smoking pot and the flaming torch

  814. goes through the pieces, he knows

  815. that he will be torn apart in his son.

  816. Here's the question.

  817. How does that help you?

  818. Now, verse six.

  819. and he

  820. believed the Lord. And what the Lord did

  821. is he counted that belief back to Abram

  822. as righteousness.

  823. Here's my question for you. Do you

  824. believe?

  825. Do you believe?

  826. Do you believe yourself to be a sinner

  827. in need of of a savior.

  828. Do you believe that you have not lived

  829. the life you know you should have lived?

  830. Do you believe

  831. that God in his mercy and grace to you

  832. made a way where you don't get torn

  833. apart for your sin? But Jesus does.

  834. If you believe that, what God does in an

  835. amazing grace is he credits you as being

  836. righteous. How does that work? Because

  837. as Jesus hangs there and becomes your

  838. sin and my sin, what that enables God to

  839. do is if you believe in that, then all

  840. of Jesus righteousness gets credited to

  841. you.

  842. Do you believe it?

  843. You and I were not able to go to the

  844. covenant

  845. enactment ceremony of Genesis 15.

  846. But do you know what God did for us?

  847. He gave us the covenant

  848. enactment

  849. ceremony.

  850. So if you have your elements, please

  851. grab them.

  852. If you did not grab them as you came in,

  853. some of our ushers are around. Just

  854. raise your hand and then we'll get them

  855. to you.

  856. Because Genesis 15

  857. was pointing ultimately

  858. to a hill outside of Jerusalem where all

  859. this got solved.

  860. And if you were there in Genesis 15

  861. and you saw Abram, you would have saw

  862. like all the blood on him.

  863. You would have seen these torn up

  864. animals.

  865. And if you were on the hill outside of

  866. Jerusalem and you looked up at the

  867. cross, you would have seen your savior

  868. torn as well.

  869. And you would have looked at Abram in

  870. Genesis 15

  871. and the blood would have been on his

  872. hands. It would have been on his

  873. clothes. It would have been on the

  874. ground.

  875. And if you had been on that hill outside

  876. of Jerusalem, you would have seen

  877. blood dripping from a cross.

  878. And the night before

  879. Jesus went there,

  880. he sat with his friends

  881. as he would have sat with you.

  882. I love the brilliance of God. Jesus says

  883. there's going to be a new what?

  884. Covenant.

  885. There's going to be a new covenant.

  886. There's going to be a new promise.

  887. of how we're going to do life.

  888. And Jesus grabs a piece of bread and he

  889. breaks it and he says, "This is my body

  890. broken

  891. for you." Why?

  892. So your body isn't.

  893. Why? Because God said, "I will bear

  894. the ramifications of the promise on

  895. myself."

  896. And Abram had no way of knowing,

  897. but you do.

  898. And so what Jesus said, he said, "Do

  899. this as often as you eat of it in

  900. remembrance of me."

  901. Bible says that after the supper, they

  902. ate together.

  903. Jesus took a cup

  904. And he says in that moment that this is

  905. the new covenant. No, we're not going to

  906. cut up animals anymore. We're not doing

  907. it that way.

  908. From now on, it's going to be my blood

  909. that was shed for you. Why?

  910. So that your blood is not.

  911. Jesus says, "Let it be mine in your

  912. place."

  913. And he said, "Every time you drink this,

  914. do so in remembrance of me.

  915. And so, Father, again, we thank you.

  916. We thank you for your grace. We thank

  917. you for your love. We thank you for your

  918. kindness.

  919. We thank you that you're a good father

  920. who amazingly figured out how to crush

  921. sin without crushing the sinner.

  922. And Jesus, we thank you that you took

  923. that crushing for us.

  924. I pray for each of us that you'll

  925. continue to help us as we remember who

  926. you are and what you've done and what

  927. you've promised,

  928. that you are good.

  929. And those things which rattle us today,

  930. you are stronger than.

  931. And would you lift our eyes

  932. back to you and help us just a little

  933. more

  934. to take our faith

  935. and root it in you,

  936. Jesus, thank you for all that you've

  937. done. Thank you for loving us.

  938. We give you all the glory and praise.

  939. and we prayed in your name and everyone

  940. said,
