  1. Amen.

  2. >> Amen. Amen. Thank you, Tom. Uh, good

  3. morning, family. How are we? Excellent.

  4. Excellent. Apparently, the score was two

  5. to one. Is that correct?

  6. None none of you skipped first service

  7. to to watch that. I know.

  8. No harm, no foul. We got um I played

  9. pond hockey as a kid growing up in New

  10. Jersey, so I it's my favorite winter

  11. sport. So I will watch it later. That's

  12. what I will do. Um Jesus before he sends

  13. back to the father, he says, "You will

  14. be my witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, and

  15. Samaria, and to the uttermost parts of

  16. the earth." And so as we continue as

  17. Lake View to build what we're going to

  18. do in each of those spheres, Jerusalem,

  19. think our city, our neighborhoods. Uh

  20. Judy and Samar, think like greater

  21. Austin proper and all the counties that

  22. that touches and ends of the earth. You

  23. obviously know what that means. uh we

  24. are going to begin to send and we are

  25. this week folks around the world to take

  26. the gospel to different parts. So I want

  27. to invite a team of people up front who

  28. we are going to pray over as we send

  29. them to Rowaton Honduras and that's

  30. Rowaton that island right there. Um they

  31. are going to be doing among other things

  32. working at an orphanage uh helping folks

  33. at a rehab center who are battling

  34. addiction, providing meals, other

  35. necessities to folks that need the

  36. basics as well as helping kids learn

  37. about Jesus through some backyard Bible

  38. club stuff and a lot in between. And so

  39. if we were in the first century when um

  40. Acts 18 was written, what we would do as

  41. the church and say Antioch or Jerusalem

  42. is we as the family as we sent our

  43. brothers and sisters to take the gospel

  44. to places beyond is we would lay hands

  45. and pray over them. Why? Why the laying

  46. on of hands? Because it's a way of

  47. expressing we go with you. Like we're

  48. not physically with you, but you are our

  49. brothers and sisters and we go with you

  50. spiritually and so we send them. So, uh,

  51. here's how we're going to do that. If

  52. you wouldn't mind standing

  53. as we pray over this team and, uh, just

  54. extend a hand, your way of saying that I

  55. am with you in this endeavor. And we're

  56. going to pray God's blessing over them.

  57. So, Father, would you by grace, watch

  58. over, protect, fill by your spirit our

  59. friends. May our brothers and sisters go

  60. in the grace of the Lord Jesus. May they

  61. be equipped with everything they need

  62. practically and spiritually to be good

  63. news to those who you're sending them

  64. to. Would you watch over every step?

  65. Would you give them gospel conversations

  66. and gospel interactions? Would you have

  67. um folks come to meet Jesus because of

  68. their efforts? I pray that you would

  69. help them to help folks practically and

  70. spiritually and that they would come

  71. back changed because of the change you

  72. worked in them and through them. We

  73. can't wait to hear all that you do and

  74. pray that you would do ask uh more than

  75. we can ask, see, or imagine for Jesus'

  76. sake. And everyone said, "Amen." Amen.

  77. All right. Would you thank them?

  78. All right. You can be seated. Uh

  79. question as we get going today. Um are

  80. you

  81. are you a patient person?

  82. And as you chuckle, those are the honest

  83. people because you're not. I am,

  84. however,

  85. so I'm going to teach you how to do it.

  86. I'll just give you one example of Eric's

  87. amazing patience. So, for instance, if

  88. I'm behind you at a red light and I see

  89. you get out your phone because I'm

  90. looking for you to get out your phone,

  91. you have like again patience a good half

  92. a second to go when that thing turns

  93. green. Otherwise,

  94. like like my my kids are like, "Dad,

  95. don't do it." I'm like, "They need to

  96. learn."

  97. It's not my fault. They shouldn't have

  98. picked up their phone. Uh no, I'm not

  99. patient. I struggle at that. So, I'm

  100. going to teach you what I learned this

  101. week about patience. And you're like,

  102. "Man, can we talk about the hockey

  103. game?" Okay. Uh, one of the things that

  104. psychologists have been doing for years

  105. and years is trying to figure out at

  106. some level is patience something that

  107. you're kind of born with. Like there's

  108. some people in here you're just better

  109. at it because you have some sort of

  110. wiring or gifting or something that that

  111. other people don't have. Like no one's

  112. perfect at patience, but you're just you

  113. have a leg up. And so what they did is

  114. they devised this thing called the

  115. marshmallow test. And what the

  116. marshmallow test is is you put a child

  117. in a room and you put a marshmallow in

  118. front of them and here's what you say.

  119. It's like you can eat this marshmallow,

  120. but if you don't, if you wait, I'm going

  121. to go and I'm going to get another

  122. marshmallow and I'm going to come back

  123. and if you show your patience, then

  124. you're going to get to eat two

  125. marshmallows. And they see kind of,

  126. okay, how much patience impulse control

  127. does the child have? And one of those

  128. looks like this.

  129. >> Okay, so that's your All right, here's

  130. the deal. marshmallow for you. You can

  131. either wait and I'll give you another

  132. one if you wait or you can eat it now.

  133. When I come back, I'll give you another.

  134. So then you'll have two. But stay in

  135. here and stay in the chair till I come

  136. back. Okay. All right.

  137. How'd you do?

  138. Did you do good? You did.

  139. >> You wanted to eat it, didn't you? Yeah.

  140. So, did I tell you to give you another

  141. one? Okay. Now, you can have both.

  142. You need them.

  143. Oh man, I love that kid. He's gonna be

  144. president one day. I know it. Um,

  145. I doubt I would have made it. Uh what's

  146. also interesting is they've been doing

  147. these studies long enough, but there's a

  148. longitudinal aspect to them now as

  149. they've tracked kids over time and said,

  150. "Okay, the kids who like our young man

  151. was able to withstand the temptation

  152. sniffing it as much as he did." Um that

  153. those kids who were able to be patient

  154. actually higher SAT scores, higher uh

  155. academic achievement and success later

  156. in life. So, but you're not surprised by

  157. that. Why? Because you know, you're

  158. probably going to do better if you can

  159. be a patient person versus an impatient

  160. person, which is exactly what the Bible

  161. has been talking to us about for

  162. centuries. This is Proverbs 16. It says,

  163. "Whoever is slow to anger," the other

  164. way you can translate that is patient in

  165. your anger or patient in your emotions.

  166. You know what that kind of person,

  167. they're better than the mighty.

  168. And then the correlary, he or she who

  169. rules his spirit, they're better,

  170. they're stronger, they're more able,

  171. capable than someone who could take a

  172. city. That's the level of patience like

  173. what patience can bring to your life and

  174. my life. Right? Problem is like patience

  175. is really hard to build, is it not?

  176. Because I don't know about you, but I

  177. have found it requires the one thing I

  178. never want to do, which is wait. As I

  179. think back on my life, and if you think

  180. back on your life, have you ever had a

  181. time where impatience got the best of

  182. you and maybe you said something that

  183. you later regretted?

  184. Or have you ever done something that you

  185. later regretted because you got

  186. impatient?

  187. Have you ever had to go back and say,

  188. "Gosh, sorry. I don't really know what

  189. came over me. Sorry, I lost my temper. I

  190. lost my mind.

  191. Sorry." I can think of those things. And

  192. you have to admit to it. I'll just know

  193. that like we all struggle, right?

  194. Patience is something that yeah, maybe

  195. like that kid, you're like in the

  196. moment, man, I did it and I overcame the

  197. thing. But over time, man, man, I get

  198. put in situations and man, it turns out

  199. I'm not very patient at all. Just put me

  200. behind a red light with a teenager on

  201. their phone. Lose my mind. Um,

  202. so then the question is like then how do

  203. you get better at it? If it's true, and

  204. I don't need to convince you much that

  205. um, you'd be better off if you develop

  206. some patience. What would you do if I

  207. said, "Okay, here I'm going to pray in a

  208. minute, send you all off, start building

  209. patience." What would step one be?

  210. Just just go to different red lights and

  211. just sit there behind people on their

  212. phone. Um, Yeah, it's a little hard.

  213. It's a little opaque. It's like, so what

  214. would I do in order to to build that? As

  215. I processed this this week, I had a

  216. thought that I hadn't thought before

  217. because we're in our Abraham series

  218. looking at this living a life of faith

  219. that I think there's a real linkage

  220. between patience and faith that I had

  221. never seen before. And it's this that I

  222. think patience is more about what you

  223. believe

  224. than it's about your actual ability to

  225. wait. What I mean by that is you want

  226. something. You've been waiting for

  227. something. It's like a relationship or

  228. you've been waiting for a career move or

  229. you've been waiting for that person to

  230. stop acting the way they act and you've

  231. been waiting for your kids to figure out

  232. some stuff and you've been waiting for

  233. your spouse to figure out some stuff and

  234. uh you've been waiting a long time. And

  235. what happens in your waiting is you want

  236. the thing. You know it's the right

  237. thing. You know you should wait. you

  238. felt like, yeah, you prayed about it and

  239. God told you like, "Hey, just wait. I'm

  240. gonna I'm gonna work in that person. I'm

  241. going to work in that situation. Your

  242. finances are going to get better. You

  243. don't have to cut a corner. Just wait.

  244. You don't don't cut a corner in your

  245. relationships." But what happens over

  246. time is like, "Yeah, but I could do it

  247. this way and just kind of circumn this

  248. problem." I mean, because all my friends

  249. are doing it. I mean, like, it's working

  250. out for people in the world. Like, why

  251. don't I just do what they do?

  252. And the question is, do you believe in

  253. that moment? Do you have faith that

  254. waiting for the thing that you know you

  255. should wait for is actually better than

  256. I'm just going to do it on my own and do

  257. an end around. Have you ever been there

  258. this morning?

  259. That's what I want to talk about. So,

  260. now that you're scared and almost

  261. depressed, um, Genesis chapter 16 is

    Genesis 16 chapter mention

  262. where we're going to be. And from the

  263. fun of watching USA hockey win to a

  264. story that I'm just going to warn you.

  265. You're going to be like, "Oh my gosh, I

  266. should have watched more hockey

  267. highlights." Um, here's here's the first

  268. truth that we're going to bump into. And

  269. you'll notice like how I how I worded

  270. these points. I'm kind of bringing that

  271. faith piece and that patience piece

  272. together because I think this is what's

  273. going on. that God is going to put you

  274. in places where you're going to need to

  275. wait in order to build patience so that

  276. you build faith. You strengthen what you

  277. believe as you wait, which at the same

  278. time builds your patience and faith.

  279. It'll become clear as we move along. But

  280. the first truth is faithful patience

  281. listens to God's voice. Faithful

  282. patience listens

  283. to God's voice. This is Genesis 16

  284. starting in verse one.

  285. Now Sarai, Abram<unk>'s wife, had borne

  286. him no children. She had a female

  287. Egyptian servant whose name was Hagar.

  288. And Sarai said to Abram, "Behold, now

  289. the Lord has prevented me from bearing

  290. children." Now, a couple of thoughts and

  291. just things to notice just to set the

  292. scene and for us to feel what's going

  293. on. We're not surprised at some level.

  294. We're in chapter 16 that Sarah hasn't

  295. been able to have a child. We knew that

  296. going in. First Sunday, Genesis chapter

    Genesis 11 chapter mention

  297. 11 into 12. We found out Sarah was

  298. barren. We knew that.

  299. But we also know it's hard.

  300. It was hard then. It's hard today. If

  301. you're a woman and you want to have kids

  302. and you are unable, that is hard.

  303. Your identity is tied up in that at some

  304. regard. Your value as a woman is tied up

  305. to that in some regard. And rightly so.

  306. As I've talked to ladies over the years,

  307. very few will tell me like, "Ah, no, I

  308. don't really want to be a mom. I'm good.

  309. No, I don't really want to." The v like

  310. that's the minority, the vast majority

  311. of women that I have met want to be a

  312. mom.

  313. So to be deprived that good day or bad

  314. day,

  315. how about for a 60-year-old woman?

  316. Good day, decade or bad decade after

  317. decade after decade.

  318. And so you can empathize. I can

  319. empathize with how Sarah feels in the

  320. moment. That stinks.

  321. She's been promised a child. So she now

  322. can sit and be like, "Oh, like God said,

  323. one day we're going to have a child.

  324. But since that promise in Genesis 12 to

  325. now, guess what? She's had to wait

  326. another 10 years."

  327. Easy or hard?

  328. I can't think of much harder things to

  329. wait for.

  330. The other piece that we learn here is

  331. that um Hagar was an Egyptian servant of

  332. Sarah. If you remember also back to

  333. Genesis 12, uh Abram and Sarai because

  334. of a famine in Canaan had to sojourn to

  335. Egypt. And so likely that's where their

  336. household expanded and that Haggar the

  337. servant went with them as they went back

  338. to Canaan. The other thing I want you to

  339. notice is Sarah at this point gets it

  340. right in that if you were to ask her,

  341. "Hey Sarah, why do you think you haven't

  342. been able to have a kid?" She she gets

  343. the right answer. Behold, it's the Lord

  344. that has prevented me from bearing

  345. children. That's correct. What you'll

  346. see in Genesis and on through is it's

  347. God who opens and closes wombs. As hard

  348. as that truth may be, depending on the

  349. season you're in,

  350. What do you think she's going to do to

  351. solve it?

  352. She's been walking with God, her and her

  353. husband, imperfectly, but they've been

  354. doing it. And so, here she is. She knows

  355. like God said, like we're going to have

  356. this.

  357. But I also see in my culture a whole lot

  358. of people fixing this problem, not

  359. waiting for it, and then doing an

  360. endound.

  361. What does Sarah decide?

  362. Having the conversation with her

  363. husband. She says, back to verse two,

  364. "Go into my servant."

  365. It may be that I shall obtain children

  366. by her. Now, to our modern ears, that

  367. sounds a bit crazy. Um,

  368. because who would do that?

  369. I'm going to give my husband to my

  370. servant, my maidervant, and have them

  371. sleep together.

  372. That's one way to solve it. Again, so

  373. that you understand a little bit

  374. plight totally normal in that day and

  375. age like people were doing it all the

  376. time. One of your servants is like

  377. you're going to see it not um Abram's

  378. son but his grandson is going to do a

  379. very similar thing. Jacob and if you

  380. ever read that story uh it goes about as

  381. well.

  382. Uh

  383. ah but right you you were here last week

  384. and we read Genesis 15 and Abram had

  385. this amazing moment with God. They grew

  386. closer. God reaffirms in the clearest

  387. terms the promise. You're gonna have a

  388. kid and it's going to be great. I'm

  389. gonna make a nation of you. He has him

  390. look about the stars like that's how

  391. many kids you're going to have. It's

  392. going to be amazing. So, what's going to

  393. happen is Abram is going to stand

  394. strong. He's going to look at Sarah and

  395. he's going to say, "No,

  396. hold on. We're going to trust God. We're

  397. gonna hang on another day and another

  398. week and another year if it's necessary

  399. because God promised. And now look what

  400. Abram does.

  401. And Abram listened to the voice of

  402. Sarai.

  403. So after Abram had lived 10 years,

  404. that's the decade that they've been

  405. waiting. In the land of Canaan, Sarai,

  406. Abram<unk>'s wife, took Hagar the

  407. Egyptian, her servant, and gave her to

  408. Abram her husband as a wife.

  409. Please underline, highlight, um, note,

  410. star.

  411. Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.

  412. Question, whose voice should Abram be

  413. listening to?

  414. But he doesn't.

  415. What you should have read is when Sarah

  416. comes to Abram, he goes, "I get it,

  417. babe. This is hard for me, too. I'm

  418. sorry. This is so painful. Let's build

  419. an altar to the Lord, and we're going to

  420. beseech the Lord again." And they

  421. worship again. It doesn't happen.

  422. What he does is he listens to the voice

  423. of his wife. And then sure enough, they

  424. go through with their plan. And

  425. I mean, you're smart people. How's this

  426. going to go? Good or bad? I'll pray

  427. about it first.

  428. No, you know how this is going to go.

  429. This is going to go horrible. And just

  430. so you know, I'm gonna make you

  431. depressed even more here in a minute.

  432. Um,

  433. but the issue is, what voice are you

  434. listening to?

  435. What voice are you listening to? Because

  436. in the midst of your waiting, whatever

  437. you're waiting for right now, you're

  438. waiting for something in your marriage,

  439. you're waiting for something with your

  440. kids, you're waiting for something in

  441. your business, you're waiting for

  442. something and you're tempted like I hear

  443. this voice and one voice is the voice of

  444. your enemy who's lying to you about how

  445. to fix it or you're listening to the

  446. voice of your friends or you're

  447. listening to the voice of culture or

  448. you're listening to voices online and

  449. and you're like, "Oh man, it seems to be

  450. working out for them. I'm trying to wait

  451. for this thing. It seems like God's

  452. being unfair to me at some level. I

  453. don't know. We've been waiting forever.

  454. I totally know how these folks feel. And

  455. you're tempted in that moment like, man,

  456. if I could just do an end around, we'll

  457. just cut the corner and it'll be fine.

  458. It'll be fine, right?

  459. Have you ever been there?

  460. Have you ever been there? Here's like

  461. this is a hard story to read. Why?

  462. Because God really wants you to listen

  463. to his voice. Because the prime here's

  464. the principle. The primary voice that

  465. you and I are listening to is the voice

  466. you will ultimately obey.

  467. The primary voice you are listening to

  468. is the voice that you will ultimately

  469. obey.

  470. Here's what I thought we'd do. I thought

  471. we would talk about each of our dating

  472. lives. Okay? Okay. So, we're going to

  473. make up a line over here and you're

  474. going to come up and I'm going to give

  475. you the microphone and

  476. um I know some of your stories and you

  477. are married to your high school

  478. sweetheart and praise God for you. For

  479. the rest of us, right here, I just want

  480. to like I tried to like figure out a way

  481. to describe uh my dating life in my 20s

  482. before I met Heather. This is my basic

  483. description of my dating life.

  484. What am I doing? Uh why? Why? Well, if

  485. you if you can empathize with me in that

  486. because that's a bit of your story,

  487. right? What we're in February. What

  488. holiday comes in the middle of February?

  489. Valentine's Day. And what happened? I am

  490. tired of being alone on Valentine's Day,

  491. right? I'm also tired of being alone on

  492. my birthday. I'm tired of being alone at

  493. the holidays and New Year's Eve. I like

  494. to have a date on New Year's Eve. And

  495. so, what happens? Well, she shows up and

  496. like, yeah, there's some glaring

  497. problems, but she's got some good

  498. qualities, too.

  499. And I know I shouldn't. Like, yeah,

  500. we'll go out. Or this is the other thing

  501. I'll hear a lot, right? Students, please

  502. listen. Um, this is what you'll hear.

  503. Yeah, but she's hot.

  504. Or or students, keep listening. Or,

  505. yeah, but he's hot. right? Which I

  506. always respond with, well, hell's hot,

  507. too.

  508. And I recommend you don't go there.

  509. That's what I recommend.

  510. But notice like this is a principle,

  511. right? If you have if you have anything

  512. like that in your dating life, right?

  513. You know, you should wait. You know,

  514. like, okay, I'm going to trust God. If

  515. he wants me to be with someone, he's

  516. going to bring someone. And please don't

  517. hear me. I'm not saying you're being a

  518. hermit and you're just sitting in your

  519. house. Lord, deliver me a spouse. Right?

  520. No, you got to get out there. Please

  521. hear me. Don't hear what I'm not saying.

  522. But here's what happens. You know, like

  523. here's an option. And you're like, it's

  524. not a great option, but better than

  525. being alone. So,

  526. how's it go when you do that?

  527. Or how about this? You're a parent,

  528. right? And you're trying to like loosen

  529. the reins and help your kids grow and

  530. make their own decisions. And then they

  531. start to make their own decisions and

  532. you're like,

  533. Don't say anything.

  534. And then what happens, right? You can't

  535. take it anymore. And you say something

  536. and it brings the relationship together,

  537. doesn't it not?

  538. Yes. Closeness

  539. comes. No. Right. We're also in tax

  540. season. Part of my Saturday yesterday

  541. was on Turboax. Is that fun? If you're

  542. an accountant, I love you. Um, there's

  543. going to be a ton of people this tax

  544. season, like every tax season, and be

  545. like, "Yeah, we totally can take that

  546. deduction

  547. and that one and that one." Why? Well,

  548. because I'm not going to wait for God to

  549. provide for me to the level that I want

  550. to provide. And heck, you know how many

  551. people are cheating the government way

  552. worse than my couple thousand bucks?

  553. Which voice are you listening to?

  554. I want to give us something that

  555. hopefully will become a foundation stone

  556. in how we operate as uh Lake View, not

  557. only now, but in perpetuity.

  558. When you come every Sunday, I I care a

  559. little bit that you listen to me. I care

  560. a lot that you listen to the Lord.

  561. So, here's what I want us to do every

  562. time you come. Here's the question I

  563. want you to ask and answer every Sunday.

  564. What is the Holy Spirit saying to me?

  565. Whether it's me preaching or someone

  566. else or something in a lyric or

  567. something Michael leads us in like when

  568. we do uh special prayer time like we did

  569. this morning. What is the Lord

  570. speaking to you? That's what I care

  571. about. And you and I all growing in the

  572. ability to tune our ear to hear his

  573. voice.

  574. Of all the skills, like if I could just

  575. like if God said, "All right, Eric, I

  576. give you three wishes. My first wish,

  577. all of you would have this.

  578. All of you would have this." Full stop.

  579. You're like, "Well, a lot of people when

  580. I bring that up, they're like, I don't

  581. know. Like, sometimes I feel like I

  582. know, sometimes I don't. Like, can you

  583. give me some help? So, here's my help.

  584. as you think about like, okay, you're

  585. here this morning and you're like, okay,

  586. we're talking about patience. We're in

  587. Genesis 16 and maybe it's the thing

  588. about listening to the voice. You know,

  589. I feel like the father is telling me

  590. like the Holy Spirit's saying, listen to

  591. my voice more. Okay, man. I write that

  592. down. I put a note in my does it align

  593. with God's character. How you can check

  594. in the moment is if it like it's

  595. definitely from him. It aligns with his

  596. character. Is this something that I know

  597. like the character of my father would

  598. say he's a good dad? Does it align with

  599. that? The second piece is this. Does it

  600. align with his word? He's never going to

  601. tell you something. The spirit will

  602. never speak to your heart um other than

  603. what's already in alignment with what's

  604. been revealed in scripture. So, if it's

  605. something that doesn't fit, you can

  606. jettison that. I don't know. That was

  607. the burrito the night before. All right.

  608. But what I want you to do, not only

  609. here, but when you show up at men's,

  610. women's, your small group, here is the

  611. question to ask and answer. What's the

  612. Holy Spirit saying to you?

  613. What's the Holy Spirit saying to you?

  614. I'm telling you, the better you get at

  615. this question, man, life goes a lot

  616. better. Not easier,

  617. better.

  618. All right. So, first, faithful patience

  619. listen to God's voice. And second,

  620. faithful patience knows impatience leads

  621. to increased pain. So, now we're going

  622. to read the ramifications of what we all

  623. know was a bad idea. Verse four,

  624. and he went into Hagar, and she

  625. conceived. And when she saw that she had

  626. conceived, she looked with contempt on

  627. her mistress. And Sarah I said to Abram,

  628. "May the wrong done to me be on you." I

  629. gave my servant to your embrace, and

  630. when she saw that she had conceived, she

  631. looked on me with contempt. May the Lord

  632. judge between you and me. But Abram said

  633. to Sarah, "Behold, your servant is in

  634. your power. Do to her as you please."

  635. Then Sarah dealt harshly with her, and

  636. she fled from her. Um, everything gets

  637. worse to no one's surprise.

  638. What's interesting is right out of the

  639. gate the the power dynamic say between

  640. Sarai and Hagar flips where Sarai who's

  641. the master and Hagar is the servant now

  642. who's on top of who? Oh, I can imagine

  643. like Hagar is not dumb. She knows she's

  644. a bit of a pawn. They She knows she's

  645. being used and so she conceives. I would

  646. imagine

  647. a little pride

  648. Who's a real woman now, Sarah?

  649. Wouldn't you think?

  650. Finally, man. Who's on top of who now?

  651. Ah, you're still barren. I see the word

  652. for contempt there literally means it

  653. means to despise or disdain.

  654. Okay. So, whatever relationship they had

  655. before, that's now worse. How are uh

  656. Sarai and Abram doing?

  657. Sarah turns to Abram. you dirty

  658. something something

  659. can't believe this happened

  660. and now their marriage is well you read

  661. it

  662. but Abram

  663. man of faith strong in the Lord

  664. totally passive whatever you want to do

  665. he was from southern Canaan Um,

  666. here's the principle I think we see in

  667. this passage.

  668. Here's you get to choose while you're

  669. waiting. You can either choose the pain

  670. of patience

  671. or the increased pain of impatience.

  672. That's your choice.

  673. Let me explain.

  674. um 20 thou uh 2011 to 2018,

  675. my wife and I uh planted a church in the

  676. Dallas area. Uh have you has anyone been

  677. a part of a startup? Raise your hand if

  678. you've ever been to a part of a startup.

  679. Yeah, I mean a lot of folks

  680. entrepreneurial and whatnot in Austin.

  681. Um startups are hard, right? Um about

  682. the same percentages fail church-wise

  683. and business-wise. you know, you do the

  684. studies, whatever, 60 to 65% of startup

  685. businesses fail. About that number of

  686. churches fail, right? Startup like it's

  687. just difficult to get something started

  688. from nothing. And so, we endeavored. We

  689. felt like we heard God. We did all the

  690. praying like, "Okay, I feel like the

  691. Lord's calling us to this. We're going

  692. to start." And 2011, uh, we started and

  693. it went horrible.

  694. And if you've been a part of a startup

  695. where like month to month you're like I

  696. don't know if we're going to make it

  697. another month. It was kind of like that.

  698. And so month after month and we'd start

  699. to get a little progress and then boom

  700. something would happen and that progress

  701. would go away and it was just like man

  702. for like the first three years

  703. it's like man I don't know if this thing

  704. is going to make it. It just felt like

  705. like like if a like if a soft breeze

  706. went by the thing would crumble kind of

  707. feeling. If you've been in startups, you

  708. know what that feels like. Um,

  709. but me, man, man of faith. You know what

  710. I did is I prayed and I didn't pray,

  711. God, you know, should we continue or

  712. should we not? You know what I prayed?

  713. God, let me go.

  714. Man, why did you take me out of the

  715. military? I was at least good at that.

  716. Like, I'm a bad leader. I'm a bad

  717. preacher. I'm a bad pastor. I'm like I'm

  718. bad in every way. Like I had I I would

  719. joke like I have the antimidas touch.

  720. You know the mightest touch you touch

  721. everything turns to gold. I touch it

  722. every turns to something else.

  723. Yeah. You feel me? You've had that

  724. season. You're like everything I choose

  725. turns to. That's how I felt.

  726. That's exactly how I felt.

  727. I was God you made a mistake.

  728. Like I prayed and you told me no. stick

  729. it out. And every time I prayed, you

  730. know what God said? No. And I get more

  731. mad.

  732. Just let me go fly for Southwest. Let me

  733. go fly for FedEx.

  734. Go fly packages around. Packages don't

  735. tell you you stink. That'd be awesome.

  736. And then I don't remember how I came

  737. across this. Maybe I was listening to a

  738. a message or whatever. probably my wife

  739. told me this because most good ideas

  740. come from her. Um but this idea of um

  741. play the movie,

  742. play the movie. Uh what play the movie

  743. is is when you're trying to make a

  744. decision and you've got a couple

  745. options, just imagine the movie scene of

  746. what's going to happen from your

  747. decision down the line,

  748. right? good way to kind of just play it

  749. out like okay I'm gonna I'm thinking

  750. about doing this like what's gonna

  751. happen six months and 12 months just

  752. play the movie right and so I did and I

  753. imagine myself you know we're at 30,000

  754. ft and tray tables up and all that

  755. and I would have known that I was not

  756. where I was supposed to be

  757. and the Lord in his kindness

  758. said, "Okay, let's play the movie. How

  759. are you going to feel if you make that

  760. decision?"

  761. And I said, "I'm gonna

  762. I'll actually feel worse."

  763. Here's what's going to happen to you as

  764. you wait on God. You are like Abram and

  765. Sarah. You are going to feel the pain of

  766. waiting. The challenge is that's a known

  767. quantity. You know what that's feels

  768. like. And what the enemy is going to

  769. tell you and what your flesh is going to

  770. want is to reve uh relieve that pain.

  771. And so you're going to look at like, oh

  772. yeah, but you know, I know that's a

  773. possibility, but it's probably not going

  774. to be as bad as I think.

  775. And what you're going to do is you're

  776. going to exchange your present pain for

  777. like raise your hand if you're at all

  778. surprised what happened. Yeah, me

  779. neither.

  780. It got worse. It got way worse.

  781. And so in the midst here's here's what

  782. the Lord is trying to get us in the

  783. midst of your waiting. It's hard. He

  784. knows it is hard. It is it is legitimate

  785. pain. He knows it. Whether you're

  786. waiting for some like you're you're a

  787. couple and you're waiting for a child.

  788. You're in a marriage that isn't going

  789. great and you need to wait. Don't

  790. divorce. Like just hang in there.

  791. Or in your career you're like, man, it's

  792. just ah, and please don't hear me. I'm

  793. not saying you don't ever make a change.

  794. Sometimes you do. But often here's

  795. here's what I found more than anything

  796. else, right? When when I do the debrief

  797. with someone, I like, "Hey, did you pray

  798. about the decision before it?" Like

  799. kind of

  800. here's what the Lord is trying to get

  801. you to do. He's trying to get you like,

  802. "Please just hang in with me." Could you

  803. imagine how this story would have gone

  804. if they just said, "Nope, we're not

  805. going to do it that way.

  806. Whatever you're waiting for right now,

  807. please,

  808. please wait on God.

  809. Please listen for his voice.

  810. Please continue to press in. I know I

  811. know it's painful,

  812. but I'm here to tell you that the other

  813. option is worse.

  814. The other thing I love about this

  815. chapter,

  816. We're all thoroughly depressed. Um

  817. is it ends in such grace

  818. because faithful patience trusts our

  819. faithful God who hears

  820. and sees

  821. and sees me.

  822. This is this is amazing. Verse seven,

  823. the angel of the Lord found her by a

  824. spring of water in the wilderness. The

  825. spring on the way to Shure. sure would

  826. have been um on the way back to Egypt.

  827. So Hagar is trying to go home.

  828. Can totally understand.

  829. And this angel, more on that in a

  830. second, said, "Uh, Hagar, servant of

  831. Sarah, where have you come from and

  832. where are you going?" She said, "I'm

  833. fleeing from my mistress Sarah." The

  834. angel of the Lord said to her, "Return

  835. to your mistress and submit to her." The

  836. one thing she doesn't want to do. And we

  837. totally get it. In verse 10, the angel

  838. of the Lord also said to her, "I will

  839. surely multiply your offspring so that

  840. they cannot be numbered for multitude."

  841. At first, this figure, this angel of the

  842. Lord, you're like, "Hm, angel of the

  843. Lord shows up. Is this like an angel or

  844. maybe something more?" And at the end of

  845. that paragraph, what does the angel say?

  846. Only something God can say. An angel

  847. can't say, "I'm going to multiply you."

  848. Only God can say that. And in a second,

  849. you're going to see where Uh Hagar calls

  850. this angel God and she doesn't get

  851. corrected.

  852. So who is this that she's talking to?

  853. This is Jesus. This is a pre-incarnate

  854. what we call theophony

  855. where Jesus shows up.

  856. And then in this passage

  857. and starts in verse 11, the the the main

  858. point is going to be carried in the

  859. three names that we're going to see.

  860. The first is Ishmael, which means God

  861. hears. Look at verse 11. And the angel

  862. of the Lord said to her, "Behold, you

  863. are pregnant and shall bear a son. You

  864. shall call his name Ishmael,"

  865. which means literally God hears.

  866. Because the Lord has oh, and there's our

  867. word again, listened to your affliction

  868. that he is really listening

  869. and we are to listen to him. And then

  870. verse 12, he shall be a wild donkey of a

  871. man, his hand against everyone and

  872. everyone's against him, and he shall

  873. dwell over against all his kinsmen. Um,

  874. parents, how often do you use the name

  875. that you gave your kids?

  876. A little or a lot over their lifetime?

  877. All the time, right? You better pick

  878. wisely because you're going to say it a

  879. lot. Here's what I love. Like, this is

  880. so kind and gracious what Jesus is doing

  881. with her and Abram and Sarah. What would

  882. you do if you wanted to make that they

  883. remembered the lesson and didn't forget.

  884. We're going to name the child God Hears.

  885. Hey, has anyone seen God Hears? Left him

  886. here a second ago. Hey, God hears. Time

  887. for bed. Hey, God hears. Time to uh

  888. brush your teeth. Hey, God hears. Come

  889. in. Wash up. It's time for uh uh dinner.

  890. God hears. God hears. God hears. God

  891. hears.

  892. What message do you think the Lord is

  893. trying to get

  894. in the kindest way?

  895. He's not trying to call him on the

  896. carpet. You know why you guys are in the

  897. situation you are?

  898. We're going to name the child God Hears.

  899. In the midst of your waiting, in the

  900. midst of your being patient, do you know

  901. what you need to know? That your father

  902. hears you. And if he hears you, what's

  903. the implication?

  904. Talk to him. Talk to him.

  905. It gets better.

  906. Second name, God sees. Verse 13, she

  907. called the name of the Lord who spoke to

  908. her. Spoke to her. You are a God of

  909. seeing. literally

  910. at Elroy, the God who sees. Well, why?

  911. Because it's it's actually it's helpful

  912. to know that God hears you. But it's not

  913. really enough, is it? Because I also

  914. want to know that God's paying

  915. attention. I also want to know that he

  916. knows what I'm going through. Do you

  917. realize how long we've been waiting? Do

  918. you realize what's going on? Do you

  919. realize all the other people are you're

  920. blessing and you're not blessing us?

  921. Like, what gives God

  922. He's like, "I see you. I'm not distant.

  923. I'm not I'm not dispassionate. I'm not I

  924. haven't forgotten about you. I see you

  925. right where you are with what you're

  926. going through."

  927. And then it gets better because he

  928. doesn't just see, he sees me. So

  929. the rest of verse 13, truly here I have

  930. seen him who looks after me.

  931. Therefore the well was called

  932. Roy that lies between Kadesh and Bared.

  933. And Hagar bore Abram a son. And Abram

  934. called the name of his son whom Hagar

  935. bore Ishmael.

  936. Abram was 86 years old when Haggar bore

  937. Ishmael to Abram.

  938. In the midst of our waiting, what you

  939. want to know is not only does God hear

  940. you, God sees you.

  941. But he sees exactly what you're going

  942. through.

  943. And then you can wait and then you can

  944. I came across an article in the Atlantic

  945. this week called Relearning the Lost

  946. Skill of Patience.

  947. I don't recommend you read it.

  948. Jessica Lehei is the author and in the

  949. article she cites the work of a Harvard

  950. professor who um has a um class at

  951. Harvard for the engineering students uh

  952. on observation how to uh and problem

  953. solving

  954. uh and what they do what she does is

  955. engineers many of you are those

  956. uh engineers solve problems

  957. right? They solve hard problems. And um

  958. what they have found at Harvard, I

  959. guess, is that if you increase your

  960. observational skills, you'll be a better

  961. problem solver. Makes sense. So what she

  962. does as kind of like a seinal project in

  963. the class is they make all the she makes

  964. all the engineering students uh write an

  965. essay on a piece of art

  966. and she makes them not just like look up

  967. a picture on the internet. She makes

  968. them go to a museum or gallery

  969. and the first thing they have to do is

  970. observe the painting

  971. for three hours. They have to sit there.

  972. Uh she comments that it's it's meant to

  973. be intentionally a little bit over the

  974. top to help drive the point home.

  975. Um,

  976. she says this,

  977. this is the professor, extended

  978. attention reveals nuances and details

  979. unavailable to the casual student or

  980. rushed museum goer. She notes that just

  981. because, please listen, just because you

  982. have looked at a painting doesn't mean

  983. you've seen it.

  984. Just because something is available to

  985. your vision doesn't mean it's available

  986. to your consciousness.

  987. Why is God going to have you wait?

  988. What's he really doing in your waiting?

  989. He's growing your patience. Yep. He's

  990. growing your faith. What does he want

  991. you to see

  992. him?

  993. The reason why you have had to wait in

  994. your life and the reason why in the

  995. future you will have to wait is God is

  996. going to leave you there. I promise you

  997. until he gets your attention. Why?

  998. Because you need time with your father.

  999. There is nothing more important for your

1000. life than to see the contours, so to

1001. speak, and the details and the nuances

1002. of who he is and who he is to you. So

1003. God in his grace, sometimes severe

1004. grace, is going to put you in situations

1005. where I'm leaving you there until you

  1006. look at me.

1007. I'm you are going to wait until you look

1008. at me until I'm the most important

1009. thing. Why? Because he is.

  1010. Because he is.

1011. And when God looks around heaven and he

1012. wants to bless you, he wants to bless

1013. you with the most important thing he

  1014. has, which is what?

  1015. Himself.

1016. And he will not let you have lesser

1017. blessings when he wants to give you

1018. I just love that Jesus showed up

1019. like in a story that starts off as a

  1020. train wreck.

  1021. Jesus comes.

  1022. Why?

1023. Because in the midst of your waiting,

  1024. who wants to come?

1025. Why? So you and him can know each other

1026. better. And then guess what happens?

1027. Then you're able to wait. And then your

1028. faith grows. Do you see it?

1029. Please hear me as your brother and

1030. friend. I'm sorry for the things that

1031. you have to wait for. And I'm sorry for

1032. the disappointments. I know they stink.

1033. But your father does not waste one of

1034. them. And he doesn't waste one day that

  1035. you have to wait.

1036. But he will not give you something less

  1037. than himself.

1038. It's not actually good for you.

  1039. So, here's what I thought we'd do.

  1040. Can we practice?

1041. If you're here with your spouse, please

  1042. hold their hand.

  1043. If you're here with a friend and you're

  1044. a guy, don't hold his hand.

  1045. Um,

1046. if you want to pray with a friend,

1047. that's great. If you're by yourself, you

1048. can you can talk to God by yourself.

1049. But here's what I want to invite us to

1050. do just with the last few minutes. The

1051. thing that you are waiting for, talk to

  1052. him about it.

  1053. Why? Ishmael,

  1054. he hears.

1055. Like you are not here by accident. That

1056. thing you were waiting for and you're

1057. like God like what gives?

1058. He wants to tell you.

1059. So whether it is something you've been

1060. waiting for or you're like in a season

1061. right now and you're like, man, like I

1062. feel like God has delivered some stuff.

1063. I'm feeling pretty good. Then I would

1064. just say whatever is on your heart and

  1065. mind,

1066. but why don't we talk to him? So just

1067. take a minute while you're there, bow

  1068. your heads.

1069. Gentlemen, if you feel comfortable,

1070. please pray out loud over your wives.

1071. What does the father want to have a

  1072. conversation with you about?

1073. Your father loves you more than you can

  1074. imagine.

  1075. And he's good.

  1076. He's so good.

1077. Go ahead and pray to your father.

1078. Whatever you need, go ahead and ask.

1079. Whatever you need to hear him say,

  1080. Father, we uh

1081. we declare that you are a good God,

1082. that Jesus, you are the one and only

  1083. savior

1084. and Holy Spirit, you are with us.

1085. And so I ask for my friends that

1086. in the midst of something they're

1087. waiting for. I pray that you would

  1088. deliver

1089. and that you would show up for them in

1090. the ways that they need.

1091. I pray that you would help them. If your

1092. answer is going to be you need to wait a

1093. little longer, I pray your grace over

  1094. them to wait.

1095. Pray that you continue to help us. I

  1096. just

1097. If anything else, can we hear your

  1098. voice?

1099. Would you speak to us?

1100. Where else are we going to go?

1101. Jesus, you have the words of eternal

  1102. life.

1103. Father, I pray that you'd be with us

  1104. now.

1105. I thank you that you heard every prayer.

1106. Thank you for your love and your grace.

1107. I thank you, King Jesus, that you're on

  1108. the throne.

1109. And I thank you that one day we're going

  1110. to be done waiting.

1111. We ask it in Jesus name.
