  1. Okay. Now,

  2. um let me ask you this question. For you

  3. personally, for you personally, are you

  4. the kind of person who likes to push

  5. boundaries

  6. or are you the kind of person who's

  7. like, "No, I pretty much like the rules.

  8. I like the color within the lines. I'm

  9. like, I'll let other people push

  10. boundaries." I like my bubble. Um not to

  11. say one is either better or worse than

  12. the other. I just found that the more I

  13. meet people through the years, some

  14. people are more riskaverse and some

  15. people are more risk tolerant. So, we're

  16. going to be talking about breaking

  17. categories today. And so, I just want

  18. you to think about, well, which category

  19. do you tend to find yourself in when it

  20. comes to breaking categories? There was

  21. a guy back in the 50s, 1954

  22. to be exact. His name was Roger

  23. Banister, and he decided to break a

  24. category. Up until that time, he was

  25. going to attempt something that no human

  26. in history had ever done up to him doing

  27. it. In fact, it was so dangerous that

  28. the doctors of his day, he was a medical

  29. student, uh, and the doctors of the day

  30. told him, "If you try this, you likely

  31. will die in the attempt because your

  32. heart will explode."

  33. Roger Banister, category breaker that he

  34. was, decided, I'm going to do it anyway.

  35. And on May 6, 1954 in Oxford, England,

  36. he was the first human ever to run a

  37. mile in under four minutes. That's the

  38. category that he broke. What I love

  39. about Roger Banderson's story is not

  40. just the fact that of what he

  41. accomplished personally.

  42. It's this little detail. Within the next

  43. four months after that day, 20 people

  44. around the world also ran a mile under

  45. four minutes.

  46. Why was that? Well, because when it

  47. comes to category breaking, you can

  48. either be the person who in and of

  49. themselves does the Roger Banister and

  50. says, "I'm going to break it." Or you

  51. could be the person who sees the

  52. category broken and be like, I think I

  53. can do that, too.

  54. And you've probably been in maybe both

  55. of those. Here's what I mean. If you are

  56. a parent and you held your first baby in

  57. your arms, the category that broke for

  58. you in that moment was the amount of

  59. love that you could actually feel as it

  60. felt like your heart was going to burst.

  61. That category was now broken. Or maybe

  62. it was in your academic career that

  63. whether in high school or college or

  64. grad school or in your professional

  65. development life, you ran across a

  66. teacher, a professor, a course, a season

  67. in your education when you're like, "Oh

  68. no, this is really hard." And what did

  69. you do? You studied like you never

  70. studied before. And you put in long

  71. hours and you did all the things. You

  72. actually went to those office hours that

  73. you'd been skipping all those years

  74. because you're like, "I don't need it."

  75. You're like, I'm going now. And what did

  76. you do? You broke the category of what

  77. was possible for you academically. This

  78. probably happened in your career that

  79. somewhere along the lines, whether you

  80. were standing up a new department or you

  81. had to deliver on a new project or you

  82. were trying to get the company off the

  83. ground, what you ended up doing is

  84. working like you never worked before.

  85. and God in his grace saw you through the

  86. other side and you now broke the

  87. category of like, huh, this is what I

  88. can produce now. Or maybe you went

  89. through a difficult season. It was a

  90. season of loss and you had to go to a

  91. funeral that you were really hoping you

  92. would never have to go to.

  93. Maybe it was a dream that you had that

  94. because of stuff way outside your

  95. control, just your dream went up in

  96. smoke.

  97. But you kept putting one foot in front

  98. of the other and you found yourself on

  99. the other side and you broke the

  100. category of what you thought would crush

  101. you. Why do I bring all of that up?

  102. Because this reason. What God is going

  103. to do if you have said yes to Jesus and

  104. it's and you've said it's not my life,

  105. it's your life and you've begun a

  106. journey of faith. I promise you what God

  107. is going to do is break your categories.

  108. He is going to take you on a journey

  109. where category after category with him,

  110. if you let him, if you say yes to him,

  111. those categories are going to break.

  112. Why? Because God wants to show you not

  113. so much what you can do. By and large,

  114. you already know, except for those

  115. seasons where you do break a category,

  116. you already know what you can do. You

  117. know what? You don't know

  118. what he can do.

  119. what he can do

  120. in this journey of faith. You here's

  121. your here's your option. You can live it

  122. on your couch. You can live it on your

  123. safe little bubble. I got Jesus. I'm

  124. going to heaven.

  125. Or you can get on the skinny branches of

  126. faith where God, if you don't show up, I

  127. heard you. I'm obeying. I'm doing the

  128. thing that you told me I think you

  129. called me to do.

  130. And if you don't show up, I'm a goner.

  131. Or you can live that way.

  132. Which are you? Are you a category

  133. breaker? Are you the kind of person, no

  134. harm, no foul? Like, man, I I tend to do

  135. this.

  136. I'll tell you which one he's going to

  137. do. He's going to push you a little bit.

  138. So that's what I want to look at. If you

  139. have your Bibles, Genesis 18, because

  140. God in all through Genesis 18 is going

  141. to break categories.

  142. Why? Because there were a lot of people

  143. in the stands watching Roger Banister

  144. break his record.

  145. And what your God wants to do is invite

  146. you on the track.

  147. So here's the first truth that we're

  148. going to bump into that faith breaks

  149. human categories of what's possible of

  150. what's possible. Right now in your mind,

  151. in my li mind, I have a box of what's

  152. possible. And God has a box of what's

  153. possible.

  154. And so this is Genesis 18.

  155. We're going to start in verse one.

  156. God's word says, "And the Lord appeared

  157. to him, that's Abraham, by the oaks of

  158. memory, as he sat at the door of his

  159. tent in the heat of the day. He lifted

  160. up his eyes and looked, and behold,

  161. three men were standing in front of him.

  162. When he saw them, he ran from the tent

  163. door to meet them and bowed himself to

  164. the earth." A couple things to note as

  165. we get going. First, you'll notice the

  166. third word and the Lord. In your English

  167. translation, Lord should be all caps. Is

  168. it all caps? What that tells you is the

  169. English translators, the Hebrew word

  170. behind Lord when it's all caps, is the

  171. personal name. It's Yahweh of the Lord.

  172. In um Gen, excuse me, Exodus, the early

  173. chapters of Exodus, when Moses meets God

  174. at the burning bush, he says, "I am."

  175. That's this name. Yahweh. Now, you as

  176. the reader know something that Abraham

  177. doesn't know yet. He's going to be

  178. talking to God. This is a theophony. Or

  179. more specifically, more finally, this is

  180. a christophony, which is the the the

  181. showing up of the pre-incarnate Jesus.

  182. So, who Abraham is talking to is Jesus

  183. and two angels. Now, you get a little

  184. bit of a hint like that because it says

  185. he's at his tent door. It's the middle

  186. of the day. It's siesta time. Maybe he's

  187. dozing off, but it's All of a sudden,

  188. he's got three guys right in front of

  189. him. How can that be when like you've

  190. been to the desert, you can see people

  191. coming from miles. How is it these guys

  192. just show up? Just an observation.

  193. Verse three, Abraham greets them. He

  194. says, "Oh Lord," and that's the word for

  195. just more master. It's more like saying,

  196. "Hey sir, if I have found favor in your

  197. sight, do not pass by your servant. Let

  198. a little water be brought and wash your

  199. feet and rest yourselves under the tree

  200. while I bring a morsel of bread that you

  201. may refresh yourselves and after that

  202. you may pass on since you have come to

  203. your servant. So they said do as you

  204. have said. Now in the first centur or

  205. not this first cent this is the ancient

  206. near east this is like 1500s BC

  207. thereabouts. Um this was normal

  208. hospitality. There's no diner to stop

  209. at. There's no motel to check into. You

  210. as a traveler were um needing the

  211. kindness of people along the way. And so

  212. hospitality was a big thing, right? Very

  213. different from us because how do you

  214. like it when people show up unannounced?

  215. We don't do it here. Totally normal. And

  216. what's interesting about Abraham is he's

  217. going to be very hospitable and he's

  218. going to he's going to kind of

  219. underpromise and over I'm gonna have a

  220. little water. He was British. I don't

  221. know if you know that. Um,

  222. a little morsel of bread. Now, with that

  223. in your head, here's what Abraham

  224. actually does. Verse six. And Abraham

  225. went quickly into the tent to Sarah and

  226. said, "Quick, three seas of fine flour.

  227. Knead it and make cakes." And Abraham

  228. ran to the herd and took a calf, tender

  229. and good, and gave it to a young man who

  230. prepared it quickly. Then he took curds

  231. and milk. and the calf that he had

  232. prepared and set it before them. And he

  233. stood by them under the tree while they

  234. ate. Now, how long is it going to take

  235. to bake fresh bread, find a calf,

  236. butcher it, grill it, put it on, I don't

  237. know, platters? What do they have?

  238. Aluminum tins. Um, set it before

  239. everyone had like this is an all day

  240. affair. He is like, "This is hospitality

  241. par excellence." The little detail there

  242. at the end where it says that Abraham

  243. stood by while they ate. Like that is

  244. like the perfect host. If you've ever

  245. been to an event where you had a

  246. dedicated person from the weight staff

  247. just for like your party and they stood

  248. by, oh, do you need more bread? Right?

  249. That kind that's what he's doing.

  250. Here's what I want you to do. I want you

  251. to put a pin in this image because

  252. there's a contrast that Moses is doing

  253. as he's writing the book of Genesis. And

  254. what you're supposed to see is Genesis

    Genesis 18 chapter mention

  255. chapter 18,

  256. Jesus and these two angels have a

  257. certain reception from Abraham and they

  258. will get a very different reception in

  259. chapter 19. And you're supposed to see

  260. the contrast. So when Lord willing,

  261. we're in chapter 19 next week, you can

  262. see like, oh, this is a very different

  263. reception. But just hold on to that.

  264. They're eating their meal and somewhere

  265. along the lines they have a

  266. conversation. Verse N,

  267. they said to him, "Where is Sarah, your

  268. wife?"

  269. And he said, "She is in the tent."

  270. Notice verse 10. Then the Lord said, so

  271. now Jesus is going to have a

  272. conversation.

  273. I will surely return to you about this

  274. time next year. And Sarah, your wife,

  275. will have a son. And Sarah was listening

  276. at the tent door behind him. Question.

  277. Does Jesus know that Sarah is

  278. eavesdropping?

  279. Yes.

  280. Is Jesus in this moment talking to

  281. Abraham or is he really talking to

  282. Sarah?

  283. Sarah. Why? Well, because he has

  284. something to say to Sarah, but he

  285. doesn't want to say it directly.

  286. Sometimes, and we're going to see this

  287. happen twice in chapter 18. What the

  288. Lord will do is he will kind of just

  289. talk.

  290. Why? To see if you'll pay attention to

  291. see if you and I to see if Sarah's

  292. listening. Well, because it's one thing

  293. if God shows up in your life and says,

  294. "Boom, do XYZ." You're like, "Okay,

  295. boss." You're like, "Oh, God. I'll I'll

  296. do it." What does that take? That takes

  297. obedience. It doesn't take a whole lot

  298. of faith. What does take faith? What

  299. Jesus is doing here. H just so you guys

  300. know, next year you're going to have a

  301. baby.

  302. And see how she responds. If you

  303. remember from chapter 17, how did um

  304. Abraham respond?

  305. You kidding me? Laughed.

  306. Some things don't change. Verse 11.

  307. Now Abraham and Sarah were old and

  308. advanced in years. The way of women had

  309. ceased to be with Sarah. So agrees every

  310. 90year-old woman.

  311. Verse 12. So Sarah laughed to herself,

  312. saying, "After I'm worn out and my Lord

  313. is old, shall I have pleasure?" Um, I

  314. said at the beginning that what chapter

  315. 18 is doing at some level is it's

  316. breaking categories. Is there a category

  317. for 90 year old women having babies?

  318. Nope. No category for that. So, at some

  319. level, I have sympathy. You have

  320. sympathy for Sarah. You're like, if I

  321. heard that news, you're like, "What?"

  322. And then you would cry if you're a

  323. woman.

  324. I would think.

  325. But he's driving at something.

  326. The Lord said to Abram, this is verse

  327. 13. The Lord said to Abram, "Why did

  328. Sarah laugh?" Ah, you know who Jesus is

  329. talking to.

  330. And say, "Shall I indeed bear a child

  331. now that I am old?" Verse 14. Is

  332. anything too hard for the Lord?

  333. At the appointed time, I will turn to

  334. you about this time next year. And Sarah

  335. shall have a son. But Sarah denied it,

  336. saying, "I didn't laugh."

  337. For she was afraid. Totally get it. He

  338. said, "Nah, but you did laugh.

  339. What's going on?"

  340. What God is going to do and is doing

  341. with Sarah and Abraham, is it's the same

  342. exact thing he's going to do with you,

  343. right? Because guess who? else is

  344. eavesdropping on this conversation.

  345. Here's what God's going to do. He's

  346. going to help you believe things that

  347. you believe cognitively, but you have a

  348. hard time believing with your life.

  349. Here's what I mean. Uh, everyone,

  350. congregation, um, is it true that there

  351. is nothing too hard for the Lord?

  352. Amen. Question congregation. Do you live

  353. that way always?

  354. Why not?

  355. Like you know it up here.

  356. Ah got to break some categories, don't

  357. we?

  358. Why? Here's what the Lord is doing. You

  359. know it up here, but he knows that you

  360. don't believe it in here. So what he's

  361. going to do, he's going to put you in

  362. situations. It's like at some level that

  363. looks crazy. Is that really what you're

  364. saying? To see what do you really

  365. believe I can do anything?

  366. It's easy when you're on your couch,

  367. when you're in your safe little bubble.

  368. When the Lord starts to bring you out on

  369. the skinny branches, then we'll see what

  370. we really believe.

  371. But why is like Jesus angry right now?

  372. Is he like, "Uh, why did I pick these

  373. two?"

  374. No, he knows.

  375. like you, like me. We're all on a

  376. journey and he's working on us little by

  377. little in order to break cu like look

  378. what I can do.

  379. Here's the other thing that you're

  380. supposed to see in this story and you

  381. have to kind of like back up to 30,000

  382. ft. Remember back in Genesis 12 when the

  383. call comes to Abraham or at that point

  384. Abram and he says, "I am going to make

  385. you a great nation,

  386. right? And I'm going to bless all the

  387. world through you." And then last week

  388. in chapter 17, he's like, "Man, kings

  389. are going to come from you and nations

  390. are going to come from you. What's the

  391. problem?

  392. They're barren."

  393. Right, God? You messed up. You know what

  394. you should have done, God? You should

  395. have picked a nonbarren couple. This

  396. would have gone much easier.

  397. Why did he pick a barren couple?

  398. for this reason. Here's what God is

  399. doing in them and here's what God is

  400. going to do to you. He's g you're going

  401. to be walking along your life with Jesus

  402. and he's going to give you a promise.

  403. But what he's also going to do is he's

  404. going to put a barrier to the promise.

  405. You are going to be a great nation.

  406. Barrier. You're barren.

  407. What? How? How are we going to get from

  408. with this? What did we say at the

  409. beginning?

  410. God wants to show you not what you can

  411. do,

  412. but what he can do.

  413. What God is going to do when he calls

  414. you out on the skinny branches of faith

  415. is there are going to be barriers in

  416. front of you. I promise you. Barriers

  417. that you have no chance of overcoming.

  418. Why? So that he can show up and he can

  419. be the one to overcome them. Why?

  420. Because when you get to wherever he is

  421. trying to get you, your testimony will

  422. be he did it.

  423. He did it.

  424. I want to introduce you to a couple

  425. friends of mine.

  426. This is Alex and Erica Hernandez.

  427. They are originally from Colombia and

  428. they came to the United States about 20

  429. 22 23 years ago. They had family in

  430. Houston. They wanted to leave their

  431. situation in Colombia. So they came to

  432. Houston. Uh Alex is a pretty good

  433. entrepreneur. So he started a remodeling

  434. company. Remodeling company was doing

  435. awesome. He was killing it. Right.

  436. Houston like Texas over the past 20 like

  437. blowing and going, right? Picked the

  438. right industry.

  439. Then somewhere along the lines circa

  440. 2014, the Lord started to work on Alex.

  441. He's like, "Hey, uh, you're a good

  442. entrepreneur. You're a good starting at

  443. things. I want you to start a church for

  444. Spanish speakers in Houston." So he and

  445. Erica like, "Okay, God, I feel like

  446. you're saying this. We've never done

  447. this before." But off they went. And for

  448. two years, it went kind of okay. And

  449. then the third year, it totally blew up.

  450. Church closed.

  451. They almost lost their marriage.

  452. Hugely contentious. It went as about as

  453. bad as it can go. And in 2019, I met

  454. Alex because he came to the church I was

  455. serving in. I was like, "Hey, Alex, tell

  456. me your story." And he told me what had

  457. happened. And I started to mentor him

  458. and disciple him. That's 2019, 2020. You

  459. know what happened then? About 2021, the

  460. Lord started to ask Alex and Eric again,

  461. "I want you to try again." And what do

  462. you think they said at first? Uhuh.

  463. Tried that, did that, that didn't work.

  464. Call somebody else. You got the wrong

  465. number, God.

  466. But they continue to pray and I prayed

  467. with them. I was helping them. And so

  468. now, four years ago, this Easter um they

  469. started El Camino. And this picture was

  470. last week.

  471. Why? Because they are now in their own

  472. space.

  473. for the first time about four years in

  474. and they said, "Hey, Eric, uh, would you

  475. come and pray over our congregation,

  476. um, and just see what the Lord has

  477. done?" And so, um, we took that picture.

  478. It's a miracle.

  479. Just so you know, you're a part as Lake

  480. View Bible Church of a network of

  481. churches in greater Austin, all trying

  482. to do uh, more of this. And this is by a

  483. factor of 3x bigger than anything we've

  484. ever done uh in the Spanish speaking

  485. space.

  486. It's like over 400 people there in that

  487. picture.

  488. Why do I tell you that story? Well, one

  489. to uh to continue to cast a little

  490. vision around Lord willing here in the

  491. not too distant future, Lake View Bible

  492. Church will have its first church

  493. planter that we are discipling and

  494. mentoring and getting ready to send out

  495. so that we can continue to multiply

  496. disciples and churches.

  497. And I'm going to ask some of you to pray

  498. about going with those church planters.

  499. I'm going to ask some of you to support

  500. them financially. And I'm going to ask

  501. some of you, no, I take that back. I'm

  502. asking all of us to pray for them. Why?

  503. Because there is a big world that needs

  504. Jesus. And we're going to try to

  505. multiply as many churches as we can by

  506. grace.

  507. Now, it's much easier to have a church

  508. where we just have a nice service in

  509. here and we just stay on our couch and

  510. sing our songs. Nope.

  511. Hardest thing in the world. They lived

  512. it. I've lived it. We're going to push

  513. the boundary. Yeah.

  514. Now, here's my question for you.

  515. What boundary do you want to push?

  516. What is it that your heavenly father has

  517. been talking to you about?

  518. I want to put a picture in your head

  519. that every morning or afternoon,

  520. whatever it is that you've carved out

  521. time to spend time with your heavenly

  522. father,

  523. ask him this question. What are you

  524. asking me to do with you?

  525. What are you asking me to do with you?

  526. I promise you, you know what it's going

  527. to feel like some days? Like, really?

  528. Why? Because you're going to get out on

  529. the skinny branches. Because he wants to

  530. break the categories of what you and I

  531. think is possible that he can do in you

  532. and through you.

  533. What kind of life do you want to live?

  534. One that you at least tried

  535. or stay on your couch.

  536. It's not just about what's possible.

  537. It's what's permissible.

  538. What would what would God give you

  539. permission to do? Look back at the text.

  540. Verse 16.

  541. Then the men set out from there, and

  542. they looked down towards Sodom. And

  543. Abraham went with them to set them on

  544. their way. The Lord said, "Shall I hide

  545. from Abraham what I'm about to do,

  546. seeing that Abraham shall surely become

  547. a great and mighty nation, and all the

  548. nations of the earth shall be blessed in

  549. him?" Okay, so what Jesus just did with

  550. Sarah, he's going to do the same thing

  551. with Abraham. Abraham, again, he's a

  552. good host. When you have people over

  553. your house, what do you do when it's

  554. time for them to leave, right? You walk

  555. them to the door, don't you? And you're

  556. like, "Hey, thanks for coming. See you

  557. later." Well, that's what he's doing.

  558. But he doesn't walk them to the door. He

  559. walks them essentially to the edge of

  560. his property. And when they get to the

  561. edge of this property, apparently they

  562. can see off in the distance the valley

  563. where Sodom and Gomorrah are sitting.

  564. And then Jesus just starts to

  565. pontificate.

  566. I wonder if I should tell Abraham what

  567. I'm about to do.

  568. Why not just tell Abraham?

  569. Same reason. He's inviting him.

  570. I wonder if Abraham wants to be a part

  571. of what I'm doing. Like you've you

  572. actually have experienced this. Have you

  573. ever done this or a friend do this to

  574. you? Okay, I have a secret but I can't

  575. tell you.

  576. What does that mean? It means if you

  577. press me hard enough, I'm totally going

  578. to tell you my secret. That's what that

  579. means, right? Jesus is doing something

  580. very similar. Why? I wonder if Abraham

  581. will take the bait.

  582. Why? Because he's inviting him. Here's

  583. how it's going to look in your life.

  584. You're going to be going through your

  585. neighborhood or your workplace or the

  586. school you go to or you'll be hanging

  587. out um with your kids soccer or football

  588. or basketball or baseball team and this

  589. thought will come, right? Man, someone

  590. should do something about X.

  591. And what do you get to do in that

  592. moment?

  593. Yeah, someone else should do something

  594. about that.

  595. Or might I be the one being invited?

  596. Just a thought.

  597. Verse 19.

  598. For I have chosen him that he may

  599. command his children and his household

  600. after him to keep the way of the Lord by

  601. doing righteousness and judgment or

  602. justice so that the Lord may bring to

  603. Abraham what he has promised him. Now uh

  604. parents grandparents underline verse 19

  605. basically a one-s sentence summary of

  606. like what's the job of a parent do that

  607. command teach encourage your children

  608. and your household after you. Hey kids,

  609. keep the way of the Lord. Keep the way

  610. of the Lord. Do righteousness and

  611. judgment, which means what? It's like a

  612. summary for love your neighbor. As

  613. you're doing the commands of God, make

  614. sure you love your neighbor. Um I I

  615. bring this up because uh on Easter, Lord

  616. willing, if he doesn't come back, uh

  617. we're going to be in Genesis chapter 22.

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  618. That's where we're going to finish with

  619. Abraham's story. In the following four

  620. weeks after Easter, we're going to do a

  621. series on the family,

  622. marriage, parenting, what is what does a

  623. gospel-shaped home look like?

  624. Verse 19 is a good sum. But then their

  625. conversation goes on. Vers 20. Then the

  626. Lord said, "Because the outcry against

  627. Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and their

  628. sin is very grave, I will go down to see

  629. whether they have done all together

  630. according to the outcry that has come to

  631. me. And if not, I will know."

  632. We're going to get to the judgment of

  633. Sodom and Gomorrah in particular next

  634. week. If you're familiar at all with the

  635. story of the Bible, you know what's

  636. coming. But what God is doing is is he's

  637. giving Abraham permission. He's giving

  638. him permission to act as a priest in

  639. this moment. The New Testament calls

  640. every believer a kingdom of priests.

  641. What's a priest do? They represent God

  642. to the people and the people to God.

  643. They act as a intermediary. They say

  644. like, "Hey, I see you're living your

  645. life. Can I point you to the God who you

  646. don't know yet?" Or person who's um

  647. needs to hear from God. Hey, just so you

  648. know, this is what God says about XYZ.

  649. It's kind of like that sort of thing.

  650. And we're going to see how he does that

  651. in a minute. But here's the permission.

  652. Abraham, do you want to play a part?

  653. Do you want to play a part? Now, I want

  654. to tell you a couple stories. One, uh,

  655. both from from our church, the people

  656. that call Lake View home. A couple weeks

  657. ago, I told you a story of one of the

  658. guys that

  659. has been at Lake View a long, long time.

  660. And uh the Lord a few months ago started

  661. to lead him as like every morning he

  662. gets his team together. He's an

  663. executive level leader and God said,

  664. "Hey, I want you to pray over your team

  665. before you send them out each uh

  666. workday." And so he did that. He started

  667. to pray for them. Uh what happened is

  668. after I told that story after one of the

  669. services, young lady came up to me and

  670. she's like, "God has been talking to me

  671. similarly. I'm a nurse. I work at this

  672. hospital. And the Lord said, "I want you

  673. to start a Bible study for uh the other

  674. nurses and friends there at the

  675. hospital." And at that point, I love

  676. God's timing. I started this week

  677. and I can't believe people came.

  678. And so she started this Bible study and

  679. like a week or two later, the um CEO of

  680. the hospital came to her and said, "Hey,

  681. I heard you started a Bible study. If

  682. you need anything, let me know." Like if

  683. it grows, you need a bigger space to

  684. meet in, just let me know. I'll get I'll

  685. get it all set up for you.

  686. Wow.

  687. And I want to tell you another story.

  688. Another couple in our church was uh it

  689. was just it was bothering them that the

  690. people on their street um weren't really

  691. friends. They kind of you knew of each

  692. other. Like you did the whole when you

  693. get home from work, you're like, "Hey,

  694. Bob." And that's all you say is you as

  695. you beel on it right into the house like

  696. doing that thing. It's like something

  697. needs to change. And so they got it in

  698. their head that we're going to do a

  699. Friendsgiving for our whole block. They

  700. printed up little things. Hey, friends

  701. giving. Handed them out to everyone on

  702. their street.

  703. And here's year one.

  704. Oh, hold on. Here's year two.

  705. Here's this year.

  706. I think they heard right.

  707. They were just trying because they felt

  708. the Lord lead them like, "Hey, build

  709. community,

  710. build friendships."

  711. And people responded.

  712. I wonder

  713. like, are you right now looking for

  714. yourself in there? You're like, I think

  715. I was in the picture.

  716. One of the things that the Lord has

  717. working been working on me lately is um

  718. like for me, like for you, I think about

  719. like when I read the Gospels, Matthew,

  720. Mark, Luke, and John. I'm like, man,

  721. that would have been great. You know,

  722. like every day you get up and like Jesus

  723. is like, "Come on, fellas. We're going

  724. to go do XYZ." And like off you go and

  725. you do the thing. It's like, but Jesus

  726. isn't here. Like he's here by his spirit

  727. in each of us, but he's not here. Not

  728. like in the You feel me?

  729. Or is it possible to live that kind of

  730. life?

  731. Is it possible to get up every morning

  732. and be like, "All right, Jesus, what do

  733. we what are we doing today

  734. where you live, work, learn, and play?"

  735. Is there something that he's been

  736. talking to you about in your

  737. neighborhood? Is there something he's

  738. been talking to you about where you

  739. work? Is there something he's been

  740. talking to you about where you go to

  741. school or where your kids go to school?

  742. Is there something he's been talking to

  743. you about where you play, whether it's

  744. the gym or you're killing it at pickle

  745. ball somewhere or tennis or golf or

  746. wherever like your hobby is?

  747. Could it be that he's talking to you?

  748. I think the answer is yes.

  749. I promise you, you're going to all sorts

  750. of obstacles out in the way. Why?

  751. Because as you go along, he's got to

  752. take care of them. Yeah. Why? So, what's

  753. possible he can do?

  754. What I have found more and more is that

  755. the like you've already been given

  756. permission.

  757. You've already been given permission.

  758. What do you want to do?

  759. Again, like what's possible?

  760. How many lives could you impact?

  761. It's not just about what's possible,

  762. not just what's permissible, but here's

  763. where I want us to close.

  764. He's going to break human categories of

  765. what's forgivable.

  766. And this is one of the most interesting

  767. conversations you are going to read in

  768. your Bible.

  769. Verse 22.

  770. So the men turned from there and went

  771. towards Sodom.

  772. But Abraham stood still before the Lord.

  773. He took the bait. Like if you just

  774. imagine in your mind like the two angels

  775. walk off towards Sodom and Abraham is

  776. standing there with Jesus and he's like,

  777. "Okay, I'll bite." And then this is

  778. their conversation.

  779. Then Abraham drew near and said, "Will

  780. you indeed sweep away the righteous with

  781. the wicked?

  782. Suppose there are 50 righteous within

  783. this city. Will you then sweep away the

  784. place and not spare it for the 50

  785. righteous who are in it? Far be it from

  786. you to do such a thing, to put the

  787. righteous to death with the wicked, so

  788. that the righteous fair as the wicked.

  789. Far be that from you. Shall not the

  790. judge of all the earth do what is just?

  791. And the Lord said, "If I find at Sodom

  792. 50 righteous in the city, I will spare

  793. the whole place for their sake."

  794. Amazing. He's going to start to barter

  795. with Jesus over Sodom. He's He's going

  796. to act as a priest. He's right now he's

  797. standing in the gap for them. He's

  798. talking to like, "Well, what if we find

  799. 50?" Now, I think at some level, like

  800. Abraham's a regular guy, and at some

  801. level, here's what I think is going on,

  802. at least initially, like Abraham knows

  803. that Lot, his nephew, is still in Sodom,

  804. right? has already shown himself.

  805. Abraham has chapter 13 like he'll defend

  806. and protect and go after his weward

  807. nephew. And I think a little bit of that

  808. might be going on.

  809. And now the rest of the conversation.

  810. 27

  811. Abraham answered and said, "Behold, I

  812. have undertaken to speak to the Lord."

  813. Ah, he knows who he's talking about now.

  814. where he's talking to I whom but dust

  815. and ashes.

  816. Verse 28. Suppose five of the 50

  817. righteous are lacking. Will you destroy

  818. the whole city for a lack of five?

  819. Excellent negotiating technique.

  820. You're like, I'm taking Abraham to buy

  821. my next car.

  822. And he said, I will not destroy it if I

  823. find 45 there. And again, he spoke to

  824. him and said, suppose 40 are found

  825. there. answered, "For the sake of 40, I

  826. will not do it." Then he said, "Oh, let

  827. not the Lord be angry, and I will speak.

  828. Suppose 30 are found there." He

  829. answered, "I will not do it. If I find

  830. 30 there," he said, "Behold, I have

  831. undertaken to speak to the Lord. Suppose

  832. 20 are found there." He answered, "For

  833. the sake of 20, I will not destroy it."

  834. Then he said, "Oh, let the Lord not be

  835. angry and I will speak again, but this

  836. once, suppose 10 are found there." He

  837. answered, "For the sake of 10, I will

  838. not destroy it." Verse 33. And the Lord

  839. went his way, and he when he had

  840. finished speaking to Abraham, and

  841. Abraham returned to his place.

  842. What's the big question?

  843. Why did he stop at 10?

  844. Don't know. Here's my guess. Back to

  845. Lot.

  846. Abraham knows at some level or Lot.

  847. Lot's married. He's got two daughters.

  848. He would have known that. Maybe his

  849. daughters are married. So now we're up

  850. to, I don't know, six. Maybe they had a

  851. kid or something. Maybe in Abraham's

  852. mind. He's like, "10 will cover them. If

  853. we get 10, we're good."

  854. I also think what might be going on in

  855. Abraham's mind is a bit of fairness.

  856. What I mean by that is like God's got to

  857. get something out of this deal.

  858. Like 10. Like come on. It's got to be

  859. like a balanced negotiation here. 10.

  860. Can we find 10? Would you take 10?

  861. But there's actually a deeper problem

  862. in the conversation.

  863. Theologically speaking,

  864. what you know of the entire Bible,

  865. how many righteous people are there

  866. in Sodom?

  867. Psalm 14. The fool says in his heart,

  868. "There is no God. They are corrupt. They

  869. do abominable deeds.

  870. There is none who does good."

  871. Verse three, they have all turned aside

  872. together. They have become corrupt.

  873. There is none who does good.

  874. Not even one.

  875. Yeah, I heard a couple of you say it.

  876. How many righteous people are there in

  877. zero?

  878. How are we going to solve that problem?

  879. To get into that, I want you to grab

  880. your elements, please.

  881. If um if as you came in, you did not

  882. grab some. There's a few ushers around

  883. that will help you. just raise your hand

  884. and you get the the cup with the cracker

  885. because I want us to hold these as we go

  886. through this last piece.

  887. I said at the beginning that this is a

  888. category

  889. breaking chapter

  890. and at some level in Abraham's mind he

  891. can't get to where I think Jesus is

  892. trying to get him to because he doesn't

  893. have a category for where Jesus is

  894. going.

  895. Here's what I mean. What number should

  896. he have stopped at?

  897. Lord,

  898. is it possible?

  899. Is it permissible

  900. that you would spare the multitude

  901. for the righteousness of just one?

  902. Notice, just notice, Abraham can't get

  903. there.

  904. Why? Because the category of What God is

  905. able to forgive,

  906. how gracious God is, how good the good

  907. news is, is what

  908. the gospel is. For the righteousness of

  909. the one,

  910. a multitude will be spared.

  911. This is Romans 5.

  912. For as by the one man's disobedience,

  913. the many were made sinners. That's what

  914. you and I inherited from Adam.

  915. But that's not the end of the story.

  916. Why? Because there's another man who is

  917. going to come.

  918. So by the one man's obedience,

  919. the many will be made righteous.

  920. Abraham doesn't have a category for

  921. that.

  922. Here's the best as I can see it.

  923. What Jesus does, what God invites you

  924. and I to

  925. is something that is unfathomable to our

  926. human minds. You mean to tell me, God,

  927. that you're going to you're going to put

  928. all of my sin on your son? And here's

  929. what I love. Abraham's talking to the

  930. one.

  931. And at some level, he can't get there.

  932. But I I I would imagine, wouldn't you

  933. imagine like Jesus is looking at me,

  934. keep asking,

  935. "How low are you going to go? You're

  936. talking to him."

  937. And if he wanted to, he could have said,

  938. "Hey, remember chapter 12 when I said,

  939. "Hey, through you there, I'm going to

  940. bless the That's me."

  941. So here's your savior. Here's your God

  942. who says, "I will do that for you.

  943. You want to come out on the skinny

  944. branches with me?

  945. What do you think his answer is? What do

  946. you think the answer he wants is?

  947. Can he do more than we can ask or

  948. imagine?

  949. How do you know that? Because he did

  950. that.

  951. Why? Because you and I had a barrier

  952. that we could not overcome.

  953. I told you we are all Abraham and Sarah

  954. and we have this barrier of sin. And if

  955. God doesn't do something about it, we're

  956. cooked.

  957. But what's the good news?

  958. He did it.

  959. So here's what I'd like you to. Would

  960. you bow your heads, please?

  961. Whether your eyes are closed or you just

  962. want to look at the elements in your

  963. hands,

  964. there's two there's there's two groups

  965. in this room I want to talk to

  966. and we're going to do it in a very

  967. Genesis 18 way. I'm just going to talk

  968. and if this applies to you, great.

  969. But the first group I want to talk to is

  970. those people

  971. who God has been talking to.

  972. And up to this point, you're like, "Man,

  973. I don't know if I could do that. There's

  974. a lot of obstacles.

  975. I'm not sure."

  976. I just want to pray for you that you

  977. would have ears to hear

  978. whatever it is the Lord has has been

  979. saying.

  980. He really is a good father and Jesus is

  981. a great savior.

  982. And because your future is secure, you

  983. can totally give this life to him.

  984. You can't lose.

  985. And what would it look like if you and

  986. your savior just got up each day and

  987. say, "Okay, Jesus,

  988. what are we going to do today?"

  989. And just keep asking that question.

  990. The other group of people I want to talk

  991. to are those who you

  992. you know of Jesus.

  993. You're familiar with who he is,

  994. but as yet you haven't placed your faith

  995. in him. You haven't said, "Okay,

  996. you are a great savior. I'm a great

  997. sinner, and I need your grace and

  998. salvation to come to me."

  999. And I want to invite you today to make

  1000. that trade,

1001. the trade where you have for your entire

1002. life been running the show and calling

  1003. the shots.

1004. And today's the day you say, uh, I'm

  1005. done with that.

1006. I'm going to trade my life for the life

1007. that Jesus has for me.

1008. And I invite you to just tell him

  1009. something like that.

1010. That Jesus, today I want to place my

  1011. faith in you

1012. and I want you to be my savior.

1013. I'm sorry for my sin.

1014. I want to be made righteous in you.

1015. And for all of us, go ahead and take out

1016. the little bit of bread.

1017. And the night that Jesus was betrayed,

1018. he was with his friends like he'd be

  1019. with us.

1020. And he took that bread, he broke it,

1021. and I said, "This is my body which is

  1022. broken for you.

1023. Do this as often as you eat of it in

1024. remembrance of me." And so we eat in

  1025. remembrance together.

1026. And after supper, he took a cup

1027. and he said, "This is the new covenant.

1028. This is the new way we're going to do

1029. things. This is the new way that

1030. relationship is going to be had.

1031. That it's my blood that's going to be

  1032. shed

1033. so that yours won't be.

1034. So that you will always have a

1035. remembrance of how much your God loves

1036. you and how much I love you.

1037. That I will go in your place.

1038. Do this as often as you drink of it in

  1039. remembrance of it.

1040. So, Father, we thank you again this

1041. Sunday for your goodness and grace. We

1042. thank you, Lord Jesus, that you have

  1043. come.

1044. You not only had this conversation with

  1045. Abraham,

1046. but you came uh a few years later.

1047. and showed us who the father was

1048. and died in our place. I pray your

1049. blessing over our brothers and sisters

1050. as you continue to work

  1051. in all the ways

1052. that you desire in their lives.

1053. And I pray you just continue to break

1054. the categories of what's possible

1055. as we take steps with you.

1056. Would you fill us with your love and

1057. grace every step of the way

1058. for Jesus sake? And everyone said,
