  1. Um, couple things, uh, as we get going.

  2. Um,

  3. do you have the Yeah, there you go.

  4. Thanks, Rod. Um, if you need help, if

  5. you need to reach out,

  6. uh, please

  7. do that. Um, that's there uh for us 247.

  8. If uh you need prayer for anything,

  9. anything, uh, please send it. Um we love

  10. to be able to uh to lift all of it up

  11. and uh ask God to do and only he can do.

  12. So uh connect cards there. Uh next thing

  13. is uh we've started a a rhythm of the

  14. second or sorry the first Tuesday of the

  15. month which happens to be June 2nd um as

  16. a prayer night for our church. Uh so um

  17. June 2nd is here. So we're going to

  18. gather to pray on Tuesday night. uh

  19. those um environment that this

  20. environment is a combination of

  21. um uh together like praying for some

  22. things we feel like the Lord has placed

  23. in our hearts and things that we feel

  24. like he's leading us in. Uh but also we

  25. have time to pray for one another

  26. uh for the things that we're personally

  27. needing God to touch and to do and all

  28. that. So, um, invite you to come uh on

  29. June on June 2nd,

  30. Tuesday night, right here, uh, in this

  31. room. And just logistically, we do have

  32. child care for littles, like preschool

  33. age, uh, with that if you need it. Uh,

  34. okay.

  35. Just go back to Yeah, thanks, Rod. Uh so

  36. so this week

  37. uh with Tai's passing

  38. uh I found out Tuesday morning and I was

  39. actually in New Mexico with my boys up

  40. on a mountain in a storm and uh we were

  41. supposed to come back that afternoon and

  42. through the delays we eventually did as

  43. we tried to orient and come alongside

  44. the family and and all of that. And then

  45. Wednesday morning, I'm here. We got

  46. we're able to make it back uh Tuesday

  47. night through the storms. And Wednesday

  48. morning

  49. sitting getting oriented and I'm talking

  50. to God. Uh we are in uh a sermon series

  51. uh through the book of Philippians and

  52. the subtitle is made for joy. And when I

  53. had that thought, I'm like that sounds

  54. tonedeaf.

  55. that sounds like almost wrong.

  56. Like like that's what I'm going to do

  57. this week, Lord. Uh given what has

  58. happened. And I'm wrestling with I'm

  59. like what gifts?

  60. Because he knew back in the fall when

  61. I'm lining out all this because I all

  62. these sermons and the passages are lined

  63. out like six months in advance.

  64. Like I put this in a Excel spreadsheet.

  65. Philippians 2 1-11 back in the fall. I'm

  66. like, you knew why?

  67. Why this passage, this why this series?

  68. And I didn't know. I didn't know. And as

  69. I sat there and I wrestled with him,

  70. um, and he was very kind. The Lord is

  71. always very kind.

  72. He's like, "No." cuz I thought, here's

  73. what I thought when I was driving in on

  74. that Wednesday morning. I was like, I'm

  75. going to find a lament psalm.

  76. Um, this is a time for lament. We we

  77. don't do that well as a culture. We

  78. don't like to be sad. Uh, we avoid it at

  79. all cost generally. Um, so I was like,

  80. okay, I'm going to find a

  81. a little less than half the psalms are

  82. lament psalms. Lament psalms are like,

  83. "God, how could you? God, where were

  84. you?" Those kinds of psalms. Uh, but God

  85. didn't give me a green light on that.

  86. He's like, "No, Philippians 2." I was

  87. like, "What?"

  88. And so, um, I think as I wrestled with

  89. him that morning,

  90. I think I know why.

  91. Because what I felt like he said was

  92. there will be times in your life. There

  93. are times like right now

  94. where you know like joy is still true.

  95. Being made for joy is still true

  96. but it's just not here

  97. and joy is far off.

  98. And so what do you do when you're in a

  99. season of hard

  100. and joy ain't nowhere around you?

  101. But you know

  102. like it's up there somewhere.

  103. What do you do?

  104. That's what I want us to unpack. So open

  105. please Philippians 2

  106. verse one.

  107. And let me let me just pray as we as we

  108. open God's word.

  109. Father, again we come to before you as a

  110. a needy people who need to hear your

  111. spirit speak to us. And Father, we need

  112. to hear your voice, Jesus. We need you

  113. present. Um we need you to make the book

  114. alive to us today.

  115. Father, you are the author. You are

  116. alive, which means the word is alive.

  117. And so I ask that you would make it live

  118. to us and help us by your word. You

  119. speak.

  120. You speak, Father, for Jesus' sake.

  121. Amen.

  122. What do you do when you're made for joy

  123. and joy is far away?

  124. You lean into the grace of being a

  125. family.

  126. You lean into the grace of being a

  127. family. So look at verse one.

  128. God's word says, "So if there is any

  129. encouragement in Christ, any comfort

  130. from love, any participation in the

  131. spirit, any affection and sympathy,

  132. complete my joy." Let's just stop there.

  133. He starts this transition

  134. with the word so which means he's

  135. leveraging he's unpacking further. He's

  136. what Paul is doing what God is doing

  137. he's he's taking the next step from what

  138. he said previously in chapter 1 in order

  139. to continue to fill it out. So if you

  140. look back at verse 27 the so is tied to

  141. verse 27 right only let your manner of

  142. life be worthy of the gospel of Christ.

  143. So, as we wrestle down what it looks

  144. like to live a life worthy of the gospel

  145. in light of what Jesus has done for us

  146. in his life, death, and resurrection,

  147. that when we come to him in faith and

  148. we're saved and we're made new, we're a

  149. new creation. Heaven is secure. We know

  150. we're going there. Our lives should be

  151. different because of that foundational

  152. fundamental truth, capital T, above all

  153. truths. There's nothing more important

  154. that should revolutionize everything

  155. about us. How so, God? How so, Paul? The

  156. so of verse one.

  157. What you and I have is encouragement in

  158. Christ.

  159. that on this day, on every day, um

  160. the gospel is the is the truth that you

  161. know that God loves you,

  162. that every time you think of what the

  163. Lord Jesus has done for you, even on the

  164. hardest days, you can be encouraged in

  165. him because it proves I laid my life

  166. down for you. I have not left you. I

  167. have not forsaken you. If here's the

  168. here's the argument. If I did that for

  169. you, then am I going to leave you now?

  170. No.

  171. No. Be encouraged.

  172. He is on the throne. He is king. He has

  173. not abdicated. He still Romans 8 prays

  174. for you, intercedes for you to the

  175. father every day. Be encouraged.

  176. And then it says any comfort from love.

  177. It's not just love, like what we said a

  178. second ago. It's like, "Oh, yes, I know

  179. Jesus loves you." But the depth of that,

  180. the depth of that,

  181. that he loves you more than you can

  182. fathom.

  183. Like even even you like me on my worst

  184. days where I don't feel very lovable,

  185. he loves you.

  186. He loves you so much.

  187. And the third thing he mentions

  188. any participation in the spirit. Here's

  189. like one of the amazing things among an

  190. infinite number that we could list. But

  191. when Jesus

  192. comes in his incarnation, he lives, he

  193. dies, he's resurrected. We're not left

  194. alone.

  195. That you and I have been given God the

  196. Holy Spirit to indwell us. That we can

  197. participate with God every day. There's

  198. not a day that God is not very near.

  199. I can tell you this week like I have

  200. felt the Lord carry me.

  201. And as I looked around at the people who

  202. were shattered, I'm like, "Oh my gosh,

  203. the Lord is carrying us." Why? Because

  204. his spirit is in us.

  205. And then the fourth

  206. uh piece he mentions any affection and

  207. sympathy.

  208. Um this is I just love the depth of how

  209. this all works. And like

  210. we this is why heaven is going to be a

  211. long time

  212. because he you we're going to need

  213. eternity to unpack all of this. Um, this

  214. affection word is it's not like God sent

  215. you an email and said, "Hey, remember I

  216. still love you."

  217. This affection word is as if you're

  218. sitting

  219. and Jesus is sitting right next to you

  220. with his arm around you.

  221. It's that picture.

  222. It's that picture and it's sympathy.

  223. How? Because when Jesus looks at you and

  224. you lock eyes with him,

  225. he knows.

  226. He knows. He knows the depth of your

  227. grief every time. Why? Well, among other

  228. places like John 11 where he stands

  229. outside the tomb of his best friend,

  230. family to him.

  231. And what does he do?

  232. He weeps.

  233. He weeps. Even though, this is what

  234. blows my mind, even though he knows

  235. within an hour he's going to raise him

  236. from the dead,

  237. and he still weeps.

  238. And here's our challenge, right?

  239. Tai knew Jesus, which means since he's

  240. absent from the body, he's present with

  241. the Lord. He's his race is run.

  242. No more battle.

  243. And if you're in Jesus, you will see him

  244. one day.

  245. Like you know that.

  246. But right now, it's just hard and it's

  247. just pain. And what you and I need is

  248. sympathy.

  249. Here's the other sympathy that most

  250. people miss in the gospel. Because when

  251. we think about the cross of Jesus

  252. Christ, we rightly think about Jesus

  253. being

  254. nailed to it, crown of thorns,

  255. spear in the side.

  256. And Jesus gives up his life in that

  257. moment. You know what else was happening

  258. in that moment?

  259. The father was losing the son.

  260. Why is that a sympathy?

  261. Because if you are a parent

  262. who loses a child, only in the gospel do

  263. you have a God who can look at you and

  264. say, "I know.

  265. I know."

  266. Why? Because not only was the son losing

  267. the father, but the father was losing

  268. the son.

  269. Where else are you going to go?

  270. There is no other message that makes

  271. sense

  272. of what makes no sense.

  273. Only the gospel has the depth and breath

  274. so that we can live worthy of it.

  275. Paul goes on verse two,

  276. he says, "Complete my joy." How?

  277. By being of the same mind, having the

  278. same love, being in full accord and of

  279. one mind.

  280. Doing nothing from selfish ambition or

  281. conceit, but in humility count others

  282. more significant than yourselves.

  283. Let each of you look not only to his own

  284. interests, but also to the interests of

  285. others.

  286. Here's one of the things I find really

  287. interesting about what Paul says here,

  288. what God says, because he could have

  289. said anything. What he could have said

  290. after verse one is like since we have

  291. all this in the gospel, right? Complete

  292. my joy. Paul, how do we complete your

  293. joy? What would make Paul, the founding

  294. pastor of the Philippian church, what

  295. would make God, it's God's word. What

  296. would make God joyful? You know where my

  297. brain tends to go? Like he would have

  298. said next, continue to advance,

  299. plant more churches, reach the city, see

  300. more people come to Christ, complete my

  301. joy by be after everything that the

  302. kingdom calls us to be about. He says

  303. none of that.

  304. You know what he says? He says, "You

  305. know how you complete my joy? Be a

  306. family."

  307. Be a family. That's what he describes.

  308. Being of the same mind.

  309. Y'all be on the same page.

  310. Be unified.

  311. Have the same love. Love for God. Love

  312. for one another.

  313. being in full accord and of one mind.

  314. And then the these three

  315. phrases that he uses. First he says

  316. verse three, do nothing from selfish

  317. ambition or conceit.

  318. He doesn't say don't have ambition.

  319. He says have ambition but have it for

  320. others.

  321. Have your ambition be the ambition that

  322. you have. man, this is what I want to

  323. see in you. Here's what I hope God does

  324. for you. Here's man, my ambition. Like,

  325. I am so fired up that God would do this

  326. in you, man. I can't wait to see that

  327. happen. Man, that'd be encouraging.

  328. And then he says,

  329. um, but in humility, count others more

  330. significant than yourselves. The word

  331. count there, it it literally means do

  332. the math. Do the math. And what's

  333. interesting is he also doesn't say don't

  334. think of yourself as insignificant.

  335. You're significant. You absolutely are.

  336. Every one of you are significant.

  337. But what God says is here's I want you

  338. to do some math. And when you compare

  339. your significance to someone else's,

  340. just put yourself

  341. beneath them and see their significance

  342. more than yours.

  343. Put your significance aside. You have

  344. it.

  345. Again, it's proved in the gospel. You

  346. don't have to fight for your

  347. significance. The Lord of heaven has

  348. already come for you. He already thought

  349. you were valuable enough that he's like,

  350. I'm leaving heaven for you.

  351. You have significance.

  352. So you can lay it aside

  353. and point to encourage someone else's

  354. significance.

  355. Could you imagine if our world was like

  356. this? It's like the opposite of our

  357. world. Is it not?

  358. What's everyone else doing? I'm about my

  359. ambition.

  360. I'm about my significance.

  361. Not here.

  362. And then the last one,

  363. uh, verse four,

  364. let each of you look not only to his own

  365. interests, but to the interests of

  366. others. Again, you and I have interests.

  367. We have stuff to do. We have stuff we

  368. need to do. We have stuff that we have

  369. that we're accountable for. And so, we

  370. should do that. But that's not all we

  371. should do. We should look to the

  372. interests of others.

  373. And so basically these three phrases

  374. that he uses where the world does it one

  375. way the complete opposite of what

  376. Philippians 2 is saying in a family

  377. in a family

  378. you flip it.

  379. You flip it.

  380. That's how we live worth of the gospel.

  381. Um,

  382. and I saw it this week

  383. on Tuesday. There were people who

  384. love the workman's

  385. in their front yard praying all day,

  386. crying out for the Lord on their behalf,

  387. all their other interests set aside.

  388. this week. I saw it

  389. as people completely took all the things

  390. that they had to do this week and those

  391. will get done some other time.

  392. Right now, the family needs them.

  393. It's beautiful.

  394. That's how you live worthy of the

  395. gospel.

  396. Um,

  397. one of the reasons

  398. that I adopted and I speak over us

  399. family language

  400. is because I want us to live it out.

  401. It's a bit prophetic.

  402. Our words matter.

  403. Um, not in some new age weird way.

  404. It's not abracadabra hocus pocus,

  405. but in a biblical prophetic sense.

  406. I'm speaking over us what we actually

  407. are

  408. in hopes that we would live into it.

  409. If you are in Jesus,

  410. we have the same heavenly father and you

  411. are brothers and sisters.

  412. So much so that one time when Jesus is

  413. um

  414. preaching and healing, his family comes,

  415. his biological family comes and people

  416. are like, "Hey Jesus, your family's

  417. looking for you."

  418. And he says, he goes, "This is my

  419. family."

  420. The implication being

  421. that you are actually, this is how

  422. heaven works. You are actually closer

  423. familially

  424. with your brothers and sisters in Jesus

  425. than you are your own flesh and blood.

  426. There will be a day

  427. where you will need the family.

  428. I pray that you have them.

  429. So I ask us please,

  430. Sunday morning's great. It's where we

  431. gather, we orient, praise Jesus

  432. together.

  433. I needed to hear you all sing this

  434. morning.

  435. And you need to be in spaces where

  436. people know you

  437. and you know them.

  438. It's not optional.

  439. We need it.

  440. I think just

  441. just so you know, I don't know what

  442. words are going to come out this

  443. morning. We're just going to trust God.

  444. Um

  445. I think God has given us a great gift in

  446. this season that we're in as technology

  447. absorbs more and more of life and more

  448. and more of life is mitigated through

  449. screens.

  450. Um,

  451. you need we need flesh and blood people

  452. who are flesh and blood present.

  453. And I think the best days of the church

  454. are ahead

  455. because I'm going get in room with

  456. people.

  457. If it's a small group, if it's a men's

  458. group, if it's a women's group,

  459. we need it.

  460. The other thing um is also our serving

  461. teams. I just want to highlight this and

  462. point this out. Um usually when we talk

  463. about serving, take the tack that you've

  464. been gifted by God. You have a place and

  465. you have a contribution to make and

  466. that's all true, but you know what else

  467. is just so lifegiving is that you're on

  468. a team.

  469. Um

  470. uh verse 27 of chapter 1 says that with

  471. one mind striving side by side for the

  472. faith of the gospel.

  473. You and I need to be on teams because we

  474. need to strive side by side.

  475. So those folks that you're serving with

  476. are your friends.

  477. On days when um joy feels far off, we

  478. lean into family.

  479. We leaned into family.

  480. Second, we lean into our selfmping

  481. savior. Our self-mping savior. Look at

  482. verse five.

  483. says have this mind among yourselves.

  484. It's interesting this mind comes up over

  485. and over this word. It's like you have

  486. to think this way. You have to we have

  487. to re reshape how we think. Romans 12

  488. says um by the renewing of our mind

  489. that's how transformation happens.

  490. Have this mind among yourselves, which

  491. is yours in Christ Jesus, who though he

  492. was in the form of God, did not count

  493. equality with God a thing to be grasped.

  494. Verse seven, but emptied himself by

  495. taking the form of a servant, being born

  496. in the likeness of men, and being found

  497. in human form, he humbled himself by

  498. becoming obedient to the point of death,

  499. even death on a cross.

  500. Um,

  501. go back up to verse five. The mind that

  502. we're supposed to have, notice, among

  503. yourselves, plural. This is a mind that

  504. we have individually and collectively

  505. that we actually have access to. Notice

  506. which is yours present tense in Christ

  507. Jesus. Why? Because the Holy Spirit is

  508. in you helping you and us collectively

  509. think like Jesus. Okay. How did Jesus

  510. think? What was in his mind that we are

  511. supposed to embody and embrace? Verse

  512. six,

  513. who though he was in the form of God did

  514. not count equality with God a thing to

  515. be grasped. Now there has be like big

  516. books written on this one verse. What

  517. does this mean? Okay, a couple things I

  518. want to point out. One of the things

  519. that heretics do is they say, "Oh, Jesus

  520. was just in the form of God. He wasn't

  521. actually God." That's heresy. That's

  522. wrong. Jesus has eternally existed as

  523. the second member of the Trinity. All

  524. over the Bible, you can go to John

    John 1 chapter mention

  525. chapter 1. The word was God. The word

  526. was with God. Uh the word is God.

  527. Colossians chapter 1, another place

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  528. where he declares like Jesus is fully

  529. divine, right? Um what it's saying when

  530. it says that Jesus was in the form of

  531. God is when he showed up, he was

  532. actually fully God.

  533. But he emptied himself of the fullness

  534. of that in the sense of his rights or

  535. prerogatives to assert that fullness.

  536. What I mean is, okay, Jesus shows up.

  537. He's in his incarnation. He could have

  538. kind of released the veil and had all of

  539. his godness

  540. come out. And what would have happened

  541. to humanity?

  542. They would have like everyone fallen

  543. right on their faces. Depart from me.

  544. Right? It's what we see in the Old

  545. Testament. God says to Moses, "You can't

  546. see me otherwise you die."

  547. So what does Jesus have to do? He has to

  548. empty himself

  549. of that so that his inherent godness

  550. doesn't straight kill us.

  551. The other thing he emptied himself was

  552. his right to be fully obeyed at all

  553. times. What Jesus could have done is

  554. everything he said, "Oh no, you're going

  555. to do this or judgment right there." He

  556. doesn't do that.

  557. You see this during his trial with the

  558. Pharisees. He even makes mention of it.

  559. He goes, "You don't have any authority.

  560. The only authority you have has been

  561. given to you from heaven. What I could

  562. do is I can call about 10 I don't know

  563. million angels right down here lay waste

  564. to all y'all.

  565. But he doesn't.

  566. He empties himself

  567. of all the prerogatives that he has as

  568. God.

  569. Why? So that he can save us and serve

  570. us.

  571. That's what he's doing.

  572. But at no point, please, this is the

  573. error that the Mormons make. This is the

  574. error the Jehovah's Witness makes. This

  575. is the error that every heretic makes.

  576. They either say that he wasn't God or he

  577. wasn't man. He was both fully

  578. 100% both at the same time. It wasn't

  579. like a Dr. Jackekal and Mr. Hyde where

  580. oh, sometimes the God comes out and

  581. sometimes the man comes out. Nope.

  582. Here's like all the first councils of

  583. the church up into the fifth century was

  584. fighting this battle. Who was he in his

  585. incarnation?

  586. Fully God, fully man. He has to be fully

  587. God because he has to live a perfect

  588. life and only God can forgive sin. He

  589. has to be fully man. Why? Because it's a

  590. human debt that needs to be paid.

  591. He has to be fully human so that he can

  592. experience everything that you and I

  593. experience. so that he can look you in

  594. the eye and say, "I know."

  595. And what we're supposed to see in these

  596. verses is like, "Jesus,

  597. you left heaven

  598. to get into the dirt with us.

  599. You emptied yourself of all your rights.

  600. Like, it's right that everyone just

  601. straight obey you and bow before you,

  602. and you became killable.

  603. He just emptied himself of all that so

  604. he could come for us.

  605. How? Look at verse 7. By taking the form

  606. of a servant, being born in human

  607. likeness and being found in human form,

  608. he humbled himself by becoming obedient

  609. to the point of death, even death on the

  610. cross.

  611. So again, what happens is when we are in

  612. a horrible season, we are in the valley

  613. and joy is far off, we go, "Okay, I'm

  614. going to take my focus and I'm going to

  615. put it right on Jesus. I'm going to put

  616. it right on the cross because that is

  617. the only way that you and I can see joy

  618. out in the distance even though it's not

  619. here and make progress in it.

  620. And here's the other thing that you and

  621. I need to know. The self-mping of Jesus

  622. is also a model for the self-mping that

  623. you and I will go through.

  624. the selfmping

  625. that you and I will go through.

  626. What do I mean? I mean the Lord is going

  627. to take every if he loves you,

  628. he is going to empty you of all the

  629. things that you think make you somebody

  630. so that he can replace them with him.

  631. All those things that we want to put on

  632. our resume and say, "I'm I'm a great

  633. whatever. I'm a big shot because of

  634. whatever. I did this and I did that."

  635. Empty.

  636. We're going to get to Philippians

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  637. chapter 3 in a couple weeks and Paul's

  638. going to say, "You know, my resume, it's

  639. all and the word literally is poop."

  640. Like this one place where he literally

  641. he says excrement.

  642. He goes, "That's my res." That's how I

  643. look at my resume now. All those things

  644. that Paul, I used to be this. I used to

  645. be a big shot.

  646. Nope. Empty.

  647. Empty. How do you know that's true?

  648. Because you and I are not going to get

  649. to heaven and and sit in front of Jesus

  650. and he's going to be like, "Man, you

  651. were something special, huh?"

  652. And you're going to be like, "I kind of

  653. was."

  654. No. You know what we're going to do when

  655. we get to heaven? We're going to weep

  656. and cry and hug his neck for a long

  657. time.

  658. That's what we're going to do.

  659. And we're just going to say thank you.

  660. Nothing I did.

  661. Um

  662. I'll tell you this story because you're

  663. we're all going to go through it.

  664. Um,

  665. I got out of the military, went to

  666. Dallas Seminary, and then wife and I

  667. planted a church up in the Dallas area.

  668. And part of planting a church, you guys,

  669. many of you who are part of um, Hill

  670. Country campus, meeting in Laura Bush,

  671. you set up and tore down church every

  672. week. Special place in heaven for you.

  673. Um,

  674. because it's just hard. It's a lot of

  675. Sundays. You pour yourself in there,

  676. you're like, I don't want to do this.

  677. And I can remember many Sundays

  678. in Kriswell Elementary School

  679. setting up, you know, those multicolored

  680. uh mats in kids spaces that have like

  681. the interlocking teeth,

  682. right? Here's what the Lord did to me.

  683. I'm putting these together Sunday after

  684. Sunday.

  685. I used to fly a $40 million airplane.

  686. I've led men in combat,

  687. weapons galore,

  688. stuff that mattered, and I'm putting

  689. together mats.

  690. I had a lot of wrestling matches with

  691. the Lord.

  692. And he very, again, very kind. He's

  693. always very kind. Hey, Eric, do you

  694. think you're better than that?

  695. No, I'm not.

  696. I'm not.

  697. You're going to have to empty yourself

  698. and have him replace it

  699. with what he has.

  700. But here, like he's brilliant. He knows.

  701. It's like when you do that, you're like,

  702. "Oh, now I'm free. I don't have to be a

  703. big shot anymore.

  704. Being a big shot so exhausting.

  705. Jesus is like, I'm the big shot. Yes and

  706. amen.

  707. He's He's the only one big enough to

  708. handle it.

  709. You can't. I can't.

  710. And you know that you hate being around

  711. big shots that think they're big shots.

  712. But that's when joy starts to come

  713. because then you'd be like, "Oh man, I'm

  714. getting to put together these little

  715. mats."

  716. Why? Well, so a little boy or a little

  717. girl doesn't hurt their knee. That's

  718. worth it.

  719. You're made for joy. Sometimes joy is

  720. far off.

  721. So you lean into the grace of family and

  722. you turn to your self-mping savior.

  723. And third, you wait for the promised

  724. glory and joy to come.

  725. You wait for the promised glory and joy

  726. to come. Verse N.

  727. Therefore,

  728. God has highly exalted him and bestowed

  729. on him the name that is above every

  730. name, so that at the name of Jesus,

  731. every knee should bow in heaven and on

  732. earth and under the earth, and every

  733. tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord

  734. to the glory of God the Father.

  735. Um,

  736. our God wins.

  737. Our God wins.

  738. How the story ends is Jesus will be

  739. exalted.

  740. One of the things that's difficult this

  741. side of heaven is we have the gospels

  742. and in the gospels and in the New

  743. Testament uh Jesus is spit upon beaten

  744. crown of thorns nailed in his self-mping

  745. he allowed himself to be treated that

  746. way

  747. when he comes back.

  748. That's not happening.

  749. He is king of kings

  750. and he is lord of lords

  751. and all will bow.

  752. And either you will bow in horror

  753. at his glory or you will bow rejoicing.

  754. The king has come.

  755. Just got to wait for it.

  756. You just got to wait for it.

  757. And all the hard days and weeks like

  758. this week,

  759. he will show us what he was doing.

  760. We will understand fully when we see him

  761. and joy will come.

  762. A joy that'll never end.

  763. CS Lewis

  764. uh 20th century British profess

  765. professor,

  766. author, essaist, thinker.

  767. Um he wrote some pretty important books

  768. that I would highly recommend to you. Uh

  769. but he was also a prolific letter writer

  770. and um there's collections of his

  771. letters correspondence uh with his

  772. friends and he gets this one letter from

  773. a lady who was in the midst of a valley.

  774. We don't know what the valley was, but

  775. she was in a tough spot.

  776. And Lewis writes back to her uh from the

  777. perspective of just having come out of a

  778. valley uh or feeling like he was coming

  779. out. He wasn't sure.

  780. Um

  781. but he he writes this to encourage um

  782. his friend because she was wavering. She

  783. was having a tough time.

  784. And he writes, "No amount of falls

  785. will really undo us if we keep picking

  786. ourselves up each time." And I would

  787. insert by grace.

  788. He goes on, "We shall of course be very

  789. muddy and tattered children by the time

  790. we reach home,

  791. but the bathrooms are all ready. The

  792. towels are put out and the clean clothes

  793. are are airing in the cupboard."

  794. The only fatal thing is to lose one's

  795. temper and give it up.

  796. It is when we notice the dirt. That is

  797. when God is most present to us. It is

  798. the very sign of his presence.

  799. On those days when you feel tattered and

  800. muddy,

  801. it's when he's most present.

  802. And because of the gospel, joy is

  803. coming.

  804. even though right now it may be far

  805. away.

  806. So here's what I how I want to end

  807. with the end of the story.

  808. I just want to remind us with these

  809. words.

  810. Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth.

  811. For the first heaven and the first earth

  812. had passed away. and the sea was no

  813. more. And I saw the holy city, New

  814. Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven

  815. from God, prepared as a bride adorned

  816. for her husband. And I heard a loud

  817. voice from the throne, saying, "Behold,

  818. the dwelling place of God is with man.

  819. He will dwell with them, and they will

  820. be his people, and God himself will be

  821. with them as their God. He will wipe

  822. away every tear

  823. from their eyes. And death shall be no

  824. more. Neither shall there be mourning,

  825. nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the

  826. former things have passed away.

  827. And he who is seated on the throne said,

  828. "Behold, I am making all things new."

  829. Also, he said, "Write it down, for these

  830. words are trustworthy and true." And he

  831. said to me, "It is done. I am the Alpha

  832. and the Omega, the beginning and the

  833. end. To the thirsty, I will give from

  834. the spring of the water of life without

  835. payment.

  836. The one who conquers will have his have

  837. this heritage and I will be his God and

  838. he will be my son. But as for the

  839. cowardly, the faithless, the detestable,

  840. as for murderers, the sexually immoral,

  841. sorcerers, idoltors, and all liars,

  842. their portion will be in the lake that

  843. burns with fire and sulfur, which is the

  844. second death.

  845. Then the angel showed me the river of

  846. the water of life, bright as crystal,

  847. flowing from the throne of God and of

  848. the Lamb through the middle of the

  849. street of the city. Also on either side

  850. of the river, the tree of life with its

  851. 12 kinds of fruit, yielding each

  852. yielding its fruit each month. The

  853. leaves of the tree were for the healing

  854. of the nations. No longer will be there

  855. any will there be anything a cursed but

  856. the throne of God and of the lamb will

  857. be in it and his servants will worship

  858. him. They will see his face and his name

  859. will be on their foreheads and night

  860. will be no more. They will no they will

  861. need no light or lamp or sun for the

  862. Lord God will be their light and they

  863. will reign forever and ever.

  864. And he said to me,

  865. "These words are trustworthy and true.

  866. And the Lord, the God of of the spirits

  867. of the prophets, has sent his angel to

  868. show his servants what soon must take

  869. place.

  870. And behold,

  871. I am coming soon.

  872. Blessed is the one who keeps the words

  873. of the prophecy of this book."

  874. And we say,

  875. Come quickly Lord Jesus.

  876. Let's pray.

  877. Father,

  878. you are God alone. There is no other.

  879. Father, Son, and Spirit.

  880. We are your people.

  881. We declare that you are good

  882. and we look to the joy to come.

  883. knowing that Jesus has already purchased

  884. our future

  885. and it is secure.

  886. Would you surround each of our hearts

  887. wherever they're at?

  888. And would you continue to mold and shape

  889. us to the image of him

  890. who we can't wait to see.

  891. Be with the workman.

  892. Fill them with your grace.

  893. Help us to help them

  894. and help our hearts

  895. in Jesus name. Amen.

  896. Um the prayer team will be down front.

  897. If you would like to pray with someone,

  898. they're going to be here. You are loved

  899. and Jesus is with you. Go in his peace.
