  1. This message only has two points, and these two points

  2. are the master keys to living your Christian life by faith.

  3. And the first thing I found out about faith is

  4. that faith is an interpretation. Faith is an ability to

  5. see a situation, okay, like the valley of the Shadow

  6. of Death, and say about it, even though I go

  7. through it, I will fear no evil because You're with me.

  8. And the proof that.

  9. God is with me in this season of my life

  10. is not the fact that He got me out of

  11. the valley, but that he saw me through it.

  12. That's an interpretation.

  13. Some people would say that because you're going through the

  14. valley right now, it's proof that God has left you.

  15. Other people would say that the reason that you're going

  16. through the valley right now is because there is something

  17. so great on the other side, that God is leading

  18. you through a place that you've never been before.

  19. And when you see what He.

  20. Has for you on the other side, these light and

  21. momentary afflictions are not worthy to be compared with the

  22. glory that will be revealed.

  23. That's Paul.

  24. Paul says, I have an interpretation of faith. An interpretation

  25. is really important in marriage. It's really important because it's

  26. a cross cultural relationship. It's an interesting thing when Holly

  27. asked me a question sometimes because what she'll really be

  28. asking me and what she asks me are two entirely

  29. different things, and I had to learn to discern and

  30. interpret her requests.

  31. It is a deeper meaning first time.

  32. And I'd like you to follow me through this passage

  33. for a moment. This is really more like a Bible

  34. study tonight that I wanted to give you to ask

  35. the question.

  36. Are you headed in the right direction?

  37. Are you thinking the right way about the situation that

  38. you're in?

  39. Can these bones live again? You alone? Lord know faith

  40. is an interpretation.

  41. Paul says, I'm here in this prison, but I want

  42. you to know, brothers and sisters, verse twelve, Please that

  43. what has happened to me has actually served to advance.

  44. Really cool word for advance.

  45. It means to make progress or headway in spite of

  46. severe blows. So when he says that the Gospel is

  47. advancing in making progress, he means that it's making progress

  48. in spite of having to make progress in the direction

  49. of resistance. And many of us will interpret our difficulty

  50. as a sign that God has not called us to

  51. this assignment.

  52. Paul's interpretation.

  53. Is this the fact that I'm going through so much

  54. is proof.

  55. That the purpose of.

  56. God is being accomplished, because the enemy doesn't attack anybody

  57. that's not carrying anything. Or this is how the country

  58. preacher said at one time.

  59. You want to hear what he said. He said, if

  60. you hadn't let me.

  61. Say it like you said it, if you hadn't had

  62. a head on collision with the devil lately, you might

  63. be headed in the same direction.

  64. Somebody shot. I'm carrying something. I'm carrying a calling. I'm

  65. carrying the spirit of God, the spirit of revival. I'm

  66. carrying an anointing.

  67. I'm making progress in spite of I'm rolling with the punches.

  68. I'm moving with the punches.

  69. The opposition does not.

  70. Hinder the progress.

  71. In fact, the very fact that I'm being opposed is

  72. a sign to me that I'm a threat to the devil.

  73. So I think I'll keep moving forward in spite of it.

  74. I feel like preaching a fake message tonight.

  75. For somebody who was headed in the right direction. He says,

  76. it's actually serving to advance the gospel. I know it

  77. looks like things have slowed down since I've been in

  78. this prison, but actually I'm here doing work, and as

  79. long as God leaves me in this situation, I refuse

  80. to have a hostage mentality. So as for me verse thirteen,

  81. as a result of my being here in this place,

  82. I wouldn't have chosen to be.

  83. It has become.

  84. Clear throughout the whole Palace guard and to everyone else

  85. that I am in change for Christ. What a thing

  86. to say. It's not that God put these chains on me.

  87. I was actually put in chains by the Roman government.

  88. But I'm in change for Christ like kind of like

  89. Joseph in the Old Testament. You meant it for evil,

  90. God meant it for good. So I know the why,

  91. and that's how I can survive the what. I can

  92. survive no matter what, because I.

  93. Know the why.

  94. Everywhere God puts me every season, I will find myself

  95. in every situation that my life will encounter. I know

  96. my why. And here's the good news. You can survive

  97. any what when you know your why. I wonder, do

  98. you know your why? Not to the extent that you

  99. can give a perfect diagnosis for why every bad thing

  100. happens to you. But Paul says, these chains are on

  101. me for Christ. I'm choosing to see this situation, this limitation.

  102. I'm choosing to see this even though it wasn't done

  103. by God. God didn't put me in prison. God doesn't

  104. make people sick. God didn't take your job away. God

  105. didn't cause the betrayal.

  106. But now that I'm in.

  107. This situation, I choose to believe that God has me here.

  108. God put me here. That's the message of Philippians chapter one.

  109. God put me here, and I'm confident in this very

  110. thing that He will begin a good work in me,

  111. will be faithful to complete.

  112. It to the day of Christ. God put me here.

  113. Even if he used Judas to get Jesus to the cross,

  114. it was God's will being accomplished when he was there.

  115. So Paul says, I'm not a hostage. Don't cry for me,

  116. don't feel sorry for me. I refuse to blame others.

  117. I'm not a hostage. I won't spend one single verse

  118. of Philippians chapter one complaining about the situation.

  119. I could, but I won't. Maybe I should, but I

  120. won't because I'm not a hostage.

  121. Come on to Clare, and I'm not a hostage. On

  122. every locale, say it. So the devil gets nervous I'm

  123. not a hostage. I'm not a hostage to what people

  124. think about me. I'm not a hostage to what people

  125. say about me. I'm not a hostage to the opinions.

  126. I'm not a hostage to my situation. I'm not a

  127. hostage to disability. I'm not a hostage to lack. I'm

  128. not a hostage to shortage. I'm not a hostage to heartbreak.

  129. I'm not a hostage to shame. As a matter of fact,

  130. let's take it to another level. I'm not a hostage.

  131. I'm a weapon formed in the hand of God, aimed

  132. at the darkness, created to do good works in Christ. Jesus,

  133. come on less, worship him for a moment tonight, because

  134. no weapon formed against me will be able to prosper.

  135. Paul said, God, put me here. I'm a weapon.

  136. Put me here, and when he takes me out, I'll

  137. praise him. But I'm going to rejoice right now. And

  138. then in verse eighteen, Paul makes a shift.

  139. Everybody say shift happens, because up to this point.

  140. It's been an interpretation.

  141. Here's what happened, and here's how I see God's hand

  142. in it. You can't always see it. While you're going

  143. through it. Remember when the Bible says in Genesis, the

  144. Lord was with Joseph, the Lord was with Joseph. The

  145. Lord was with Joseph. The Lord was with Joseph. The

  146. Lord was with Joseph. That was not written while Joseph

  147. was suffering. It was written looking back on what he

  148. went through. Don't write your story while you're still in

  149. the scene. We live in a world that doesn't know

  150. the difference between a scene and a story, and the

  151. enemy wants you to judge the story by.

  152. The scene that you're in.

  153. Now, wouldn't it be a shame for you to give

  154. up on the story because you didn't like the scene.

  155. Paul said, this is just a scene, it's not the story.

  156. And watch the shift he moves from interpretation to anticipation.

  157. Anticipation, he starts looking forward.

  158. And it's interesting because he doesn't really know what's ahead

  159. of him, but he looks forward to it. Anyway, he

  160. doesn't know if he's going to live or die. That's

  161. really out of his hands. He doesn't know if he

  162. gets out Monday, or if he'll be here for thirty

  163. six more months, but he looks forward. Now, show you

  164. how I know he looks forward. Let's count the number

  165. of times he says the word will in the next

  166. ten verses. Every time I say the word, will, you

  167. count up out loud every campus.

  168. Yes, verse eighteen.

  169. And I will continue to rejoice, for I know that

  170. through your prayers, in God's provision of the Spirit of

  171. Jesus Christ, what has happened to me.

  172. Will turn out for my deliverance.

  173. I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no

  174. way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that

  175. now as always, Christ will be exalted in my body,

  176. whether by life or by death.

  177. For to me to live as Christ and to die

  178. is gain either way.

  179. I'm coming out ahead, I said, either way, I'm coming

  180. out ahead. I said, either way, I will come out ahead.

  181. I would have despaired unless I believe that I would

  182. see the goodness of the Lord.

  183. In the land of the living. What verse are we on?

  184. I lost my place.

  185. If I am to go on living in the body,

  186. this will mean fruitful labor for me.

  187. Yet what shall that counts? As will count? At seven?

  188. I choose, I do not know. I am torn between

  189. the two. I desire to depart and be with Christ,

  190. which is better by far, but it is more necessary

  191. for you that I remain in the body. I'm more

  192. concerned about your progress than my convenience.

  193. It's not about me, It's about something bigger than me.

  194. Thank God for five thousand volunteers in this church. That

  195. we're more concerned about somebody else's purpose than.

  196. Your sleep this week. Thank you, Thank you. What verse.

  197. Five, he says, I I think it's better that I stay,

  198. better for you, not for me.

  199. I want to go. I'm old, my back hurts, my

  200. knees hurt.

  201. Convinced of this verse twenty five, I know that I

  202. will remain and I will continue with all of you

  203. for your progress. What if it's not about you, it's

  204. about your kids. What if they need to see you

  205. stay in your chains and praise God?

  206. Anyway, So what my mom did?

  207. She she stayed with my dad and showed me forgiveness

  208. and because of her example when she could have chosen

  209. to escape, but she embraced the pain of the situation

  210. to bring about a greater purpose. She passed to me

  211. a legacy of covenant. And I wonder are some of

  212. you there? Oh, there's one way, Because he says in

  213. verse twenty six, so that through my being with you again,

  214. you're boasting in Christ Jesus ten verses.

  215. Ten times he says will.

  216. And it's weird that he says I will, because he

  217. doesn't know what's next, and yet he he says, I'm

  218. looking forward to it, looking forward to it. Faith is

  219. anticipation minus anxiety. It's a weird concept. And even Paul,

  220. as brilliant as he was, he didn't have a word

  221. for it to describe the kind of faith that he

  222. was trying to talk about. And so he's struggling for

  223. the right word and he does something that I wouldn't

  224. do this as a preacher. I wouldn't feel that I

  225. was qualified, But he's Paul. So he just makes up

  226. a word. It's in verse twenty. We read it in English.

  227. It's several words in English, I eagerly expect in hope.

  228. In verse twenty, I eagerly expect in hope. In Greek,

  229. it's word one word and it was never used before

  230. Paul used it, and it's only used one more time

  231. in the New Testament, and he uses it, so it's

  232. his word.

  233. How many of you have your own word? You just? Yeah?

  234. Do you make up words? Sometimes? Holly makes up words

  235. on accident a lot of times. She said, the other day.

  236. I'm not very good. What was the word.

  237. I'm not very good at im improvision, improvisation.

  238. But it's improvision. Just made it up on accident.

  239. Paul makes up a word on purpose, okay, And here's

  240. the word. And just think, just think how gratifying it's

  241. going to be to bust this out on your family

  242. and friends this week when they ask what you learned

  243. in church? Okay, And we'll have to take it slowly

  244. because it's three words put together to make one, and

  245. it's going to give you something new to fight the

  246. devil with.

  247. Because I know you've been.

  248. Anxious, and I know you have reason to be, and

  249. I know there are some things in your life that

  250. you've been praying for God to take away and he won't.

  251. And Paul experienced that too when he asked God to

  252. remove the thorn and God said no, and he said

  253. pretty pretty please, and God said no again, and Paul said,

  254. I'll do anything a promise, I'll be a missionary.

  255. God said, you already are one. No, I'm gonna give

  256. you grace instead.

  257. And sometimes when God won't change the situation, but he's

  258. changing you.

  259. You need a little bit of.

  260. Apple, Kara Dokia in your life.

  261. Three words.

  262. Appo decide say appo. You're gonna mumble it like that.

  263. It's a very big word. It's it's a very beautiful word.

  264. You can be shouting it by the time I finish.

  265. So this side of the room say appoy.

  266. You you might want to know this.

  267. Appo means to turn away with concentration, ignoring other interests.

  268. Appo.

  269. Say it again now, appo turning away from things that

  270. could consume my attention, things that could distract me, things

  271. that I used to think were important, but I found out,

  272. like Paul, it really doesn't matter. So I'm turning away

  273. with concentration, ignoring other interests.

  274. Appo.

  275. I feel like I could preach a whole series on appo,

  276. a whole theories just on the prefix.

  277. But Paul isn't done.

  278. He says, Appo kara middle section say Kara just means head,

  279. That's all it means, all right, And then.

  280. This section.

  281. Dokia good donkia say it again.

  282. Dokyo. It means to stretch forward.

  283. Woo.

  284. So Paul says, let me tell you what I'm doing

  285. right now.

  286. I'm turning away my attention from some things that could

  287. make me discouraged. I'm turning away from my attention from

  288. offensus that could make me bitter. I'm turning away from

  289. things that could preoccupy my mind that aren't my real priority.

  290. And I am stretching my head forward.

  291. Apple Kara Dokia, Say it, Apple Kara Dokia.

  292. So what are you gonna do this week?

  293. When thoughts come to you about how you're not gonna

  294. make it, You're gonna take a moment, look back on

  295. the faithfulness of God and realize that if the lion

  296. didn't kill you and the bear didn't kill you, this

  297. joker doesn't have anything for you. Either, pick up your

  298. rock and throw it and stretch your head towards your future.

  299. Kara Dokia, Apple Kara Dokia, Applecara Dokia, Say it, Apple

  300. Kara Dokia. I'm stretching my head forward. Are you headed

  301. in the right direction? Some of us have our heads

  302. so far up our past that we can't see what

  303. God has out in front of us for our future.

  304. Help me, Preacher, it'll get worse. I'm not leaving the

  305. stage till you get it. So I can't dwell on

  306. that any longer. I can't stay in the disappointment of

  307. who left me. I've got to invest in the people

  308. who are.

  309. Still with me.

  310. Apple Cara, Dokia, stretch your head forward. I can't stay

  311. in my last mistake. It's already covered by the blood

  312. of Christ. What I did is what I did. But

  313. my face ape will make a way for the grace

  314. of God to bring me into it greater tomorrow. I

  315. eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way

  316. be ashamed Apple Kara, Donkia.

  317. I'm looking forward to it.

  318. I don't even know what it is yet, but I'm

  319. looking forward to it because I know God is in it.

  320. Are you headed in the right direction or have you

  321. been so stuck in what was that you're missing what is?

  322. I really feel like this is a message that you

  323. can apply in any season of your life, where like Paul,

  324. you can say, I got these chains on my feet,

  325. so I can't move. I got these shackles on my hands,

  326. so I'm limited. My mobility is limited. But they can't

  327. chain this. I said, they can't chain this, And I'm

  328. stretching my mind and I'm stretching my expectation, and I

  329. refuse to be defined by the disappointments of yesterday. I

  330. refuse to look around me for signs of whether or

  331. not God is with me. I'm looking forward to it.

  332. I'm not a hostage. They can shame my feet, they

  333. can chain my hands, but they can't lock down my praise.

  334. And right here in this prison, not when I feel better,

  335. not when it gets better, Right here and right now,

  336. I'm looking forward to it.
