  1. The Psalmist said, I incline my heart. It has to

  2. happen within, not just the behavior, but the belief that

  3. drives the behavior has to change or the change won't stay.

  4. We found this out over and over again. Every new

  5. year we learn it again, and so lasting changes what

  6. I'm after, and I incline my heart. Interesting choice of works.

  7. If you incline something that means that it was naturally

  8. not in that position. That means you had to act

  9. upon it in order to orient it in a different direction. Right,

  10. So we don't incline something that's already upright, must have

  11. meant that his heart was declined. And the problem with

  12. a lot of us is we go through life reclined.

  13. That is just however we wake up. That's how we stay.

  14. However we feel, that's how we act. This almost said,

  15. I act upon my attitude, and I incline my heart.

  16. Did you know you're in charge of your heart? Quit

  17. saying people broke your heart. They can't break it if

  18. you don't give it to them. Heyy, And so he said,

  19. I'm setting my heart in the direction of heaven. I

  20. wonder is your heart set in a divine direction? Today?

  21. Incline my heart. I don't think this is something you

  22. do like one time. You know, you just incline your

  23. heart to God when you were twelve at summer Bible

  24. camp and you never were tempted again. And we want

  25. it to be that way. I want it to be

  26. like the infomercial. Do you remember the infomercial with the

  27. Rotisseriy show time Rotisseriy Oven and the man said, set

  28. it and forget it. That's how I want my heart

  29. to be like that infomercial, set it and forget it.

  30. I want my heart to just stay there, you know,

  31. just pay at the church first Sunday in January. That

  32. outa get me by. I said it, But the psawmist said,

  33. it's not enough to set it and forget it. He

  34. said it, it's more like you said it. You check it,

  35. you reset it, you check it. Because all through your

  36. day and all through your year, your heart is going

  37. to be tempted to decline to a default position. And

  38. maybe it's a default position of discouragement or despair or dysfunction.

  39. But when you take charge of your heart, touch your

  40. neighbors say, take charge of your heart. That's what the

  41. writer of Proverbs said. It's not just a psawmist that

  42. did it. The writer of Proverbs said, guard your heart

  43. is your heart, and that's where the issues of life

  44. flow from. So before we can get the windows working,

  45. we gotta get our hearts open. Hey man, the doctor

  46. was fussin at me a couple months ago about my cholesterol.

  47. Let's me know, I'm getting on up there in age.

  48. I never had a conversation like this with the doctor before.

  49. And he just talking talking, blah blah blah ldl HDL,

  50. try glyse ride all this stuff. And I know we

  51. could tell he wasn't getting through to me because he

  52. took a real drastic turn. He said, hey, I don't

  53. want you to be one of those guys who looked

  54. real fit on the outside, which made me feel happy

  55. that he said that about me. But then one day

  56. you're just outside running and you just fallover of a

  57. heart attack, and to listen to me, and I corrected him.

  58. I said, doctor, I know you got some degrees that

  59. I don't have it all that, but you're wrong about that.

  60. I don't run, so if I fall over, it's not

  61. gonna be on cardio. But he said, you can be

  62. blocked on the inside. I'd look good on the.

  63. Outside and be successful and fall over, and be sexy

  64. and fall over, and be married and fall over, come on,

  65. get a promotion and fall over, be religious, and fall over.

  66. It has to happen in the heart. But it doesn't

  67. start with the heart. It starts with the habits. Your

  68. habits create the condition of your heart. It is good.

  69. Every once in a while, you got to stop and

  70. clap with.

  71. The word God speaks to you. I feel like God

  72. is going to help somebody set your heart on things above,

  73. get your heart set in the right direction. But it's

  74. going to require some habits, and they're all right there

  75. in the sawm. I want to read you the next

  76. two verses because my three habits are right there in

  77. the verses. Forever to the end. I set my heart

  78. to perform your statutes. I hate this is one thirteen.

  79. I hate. I hate what's that we're doing in the Bible.

  80. I thought I was supposed to love everything. Now I

  81. hate the double minded, but I love your law. I

  82. don't think we should go on until we talk about that.

  83. He said, I hate this. I hate the double minded.

  84. I hate It's not a person. I hate, it's I

  85. hate the condition of double mindedness. I hate it. And

  86. see the thing about the thing about hate is hate

  87. is the most powerful motivation to change, not love. And

  88. so before you start with wanting to reach your goals,

  89. maybe the first thing for you to do is to

  90. make a decision about some things that you hate. And

  91. it's going to be complicated because you know, as for me,

  92. I have a love hate relationship with some of the things.

  93. I feel kind of like David. One time, David's son

  94. Absalom died and joe Ab came to him. He said,

  95. your son is dead, and David started weeping, and joe

  96. Ab was mad because Absolom was trying to take the

  97. throne from David, and so Absolom had become David's enemy.

  98. But David's heart was connected to Absolom. So he was crying,

  99. and Joe Ab said, you need to get it together.

  100. You hate those who love you, and you love those

  101. who hate you. You hate what's trying to deliver you,

  102. and you love what's trying to destroy you. And I

  103. feel that way about certain things in my life, certain action,

  104. certain behaviors in my life. I love how they feel

  105. for a minute, but I hate the crash and certain

  106. things in my life. I hate how they feel when

  107. I'm doing them. I hate the plank exhibit A. I

  108. mean I was for years. I was one of these people.

  109. I would tell you to your face, I hate to exercise.

  110. You can go back and watch my sermon videos from

  111. three years ago. I was standing on the stage and

  112. saying I hate to exercise. You know why I hated

  113. it because it wasn't to have it. I didn't do

  114. it enough to love it. I hated it. But you

  115. don't have to accept your default attitude toward anything. I

  116. incline my heart. I'm gonna teach today. You came out.

  117. I'm gonna make it work your while. I'm gonna teach

  118. it today. Get that elevation pen ready. We're gonna burn

  119. it up today and get a new one next week.

  120. I grew to hate. I think the moment of realization

  121. for me was when I was paying Andy four hundred

  122. and fifty dollars to come over to my house and

  123. let my pants out. I hated it. I looked at

  124. Andy and I said, I hate this man. I could

  125. be using this money to buy new clothes, and I'm

  126. paying it to you to make my clothes bigger. I

  127. hate this, and he said, hey, keep eating. It's job

  128. security for me. That's what my Taylor said. I said, no, man,

  129. I hate this. I hate this feeling. And sometimes sometimes

  130. before you can make a change, you have to be

  131. motivated by I know it's a strong word of some

  132. very pastoral. You have to hate it. You have to

  133. hate it. You have to hate self pity. Wow. And

  134. the problem with hating self pity is ooh, it feels

  135. good like a bag of Dorito's on your tongue. See

  136. it's not that I hate the taste of Dorito's. I

  137. just hated what it did to my waist. This is

  138. so good. Sounds simple, but it's real deep. He said.

  139. I hate the double minded. I love your law. Before

  140. I can do what I love, I have to know

  141. what the hate. I hate this, I hate the way.

  142. I hate the way watch watch. I love what it

  143. does for me, but I hate what it does to me.

  144. It's a complicated relationship. A bag of Doritos does something

  145. for me, am I not doing anything for you. It

  146. does something for me. I have a long standing relationship

  147. with carbohydrates. They have been there for me in the

  148. midnight hour when I couldn't call on anybody else I

  149. could call on chocolate. So I love it, but I

  150. hate I love what it does for me, but I

  151. hate what it does to me. I hate all this.

  152. I hate anger. Oh it makes me feel good, it

  153. even gets me some results. I have a complicated relationship

  154. with anger. If you get mad enough, you can get

  155. people to do what you want. But then you're all

  156. alone after they do it. Nobody wants to be with you.

  157. I hate being angry because I hate being alone. Somebody

  158. shall outcome. I hate the outcome of this and that.

  159. I hate it. I hate what it does to my marriage.

  160. I hate what it does to my relationships. I hate

  161. how it disturbs my inner piece and puts me in

  162. a state of turmoil. And it's complicated. It's a complicated

  163. relationship that I have with complaining. I love to complain. Ooh,

  164. I love to tell somebody you can look at there,

  165. at me when the boom bosom's doing do it. Bible says,

  166. don't do it, but it didn't say it doesn't feel good.

  167. Hey man, it feels real good to complain. It feels

  168. like a choice morsel going down. I mean, just as

  169. it's coming out of your mouth, just to unload on them.

  170. When somebody says, how are you doing? Just let them

  171. know for five minutes, every age, every pain, every disappointment,

  172. every struggle. But guess what, the next time they see

  173. you coming, they're going the other way, because it's the

  174. law of diminishing returns. It gets you high for a minute.

  175. I love to talk that about people. I do. I

  176. shouldn't say these things. I tell myself every week after

  177. I finish on Sunday when I'm watching back my sermon verdict.

  178. Don't say stuff like that. People put it on YouTube

  179. and use it against you as a weapon. But I

  180. just got to tell you. I love it makes me

  181. feel really good about my dysfunction to spend a little

  182. time discussing yours. I love to talk about other people's

  183. dumb decisions. I love it. It's just it's a natural

  184. high because if I can get you down here, then

  185. I feel right like I'm right here. Only problem is

  186. I'm setting myself up for decline. And now the next

  187. time I see you, I can't treat you better than

  188. I talk about you, so it ruins my relationships. I

  189. love what it does for me. It does something for me.

  190. Come on, how many will admit it does something for

  191. you to talk about what Henry did and what Susie

  192. wore and what they should have done and what their

  193. kids are like. But by the same measure you judge,

  194. you will be judged. I love the taste, but I

  195. hate the outcome. I hate it. The problem with a

  196. lot of our resolutions for change is that they are

  197. not motivated by a healthy kind of hate. Healthy hate. Yeah,

  198. there is a healthy way to hate. I hate racism,

  199. I hate poverty. That's the only thing that will motivate

  200. me to do anything about it is I've got to

  201. hate it. I hate bullying. I hate bullying. I was

  202. bullied Tony Wigfall jacked me up against the wall. I

  203. still remember my head cracking against the wall and my

  204. friend Hamilton looking at me, saying, don't look at me, man.

  205. I still remember the view from up there, and I

  206. can't see somebody being picked on without seeing myself from

  207. up there, just wondering, this is this guy gonna break

  208. my face? I hate it. I hate it. Holly said

  209. to me the other day, she said, I hate being late.

  210. Notice she didn't say I love being early, because she doesn't.

  211. But you got to get to the point we were

  212. going to see somebody. She said, I don't want to

  213. walk in like that. And until you hate being late

  214. more than you love hitting snooze, you won't make the change.

  215. Get that thing on your mind, that back of Dorito's,

  216. and say I hate it. Look at your neighbors, say

  217. I hate it, not I hate you. I hate it.

  218. I hate it. I hate it. I hate the double minded.

  219. I hate indecision. I hate it. I'd rather make a

  220. bad decision than make no decision. I hate procrastination. I

  221. hate it. I did it a lot, but I finally

  222. got to the point where I hate it now. I

  223. hate the discipline of preparation too. But I hate the

  224. pain of procrastination more than I hate I hate it.

  225. And I actually said to somebody the other day, I

  226. said I never thought i'd hear myself say this, And

  227. I used to hate people who said this. I think

  228. I like exercise. After three years of doing it five

  229. days a week and finding out what works for me,

  230. I think I'm one of those people that I used

  231. to roll my eyes at. I think I like the exercise.

  232. I think i'd reset my heart. I declare reset, I

  233. declare reset. There are some things in your life that

  234. have been on the decline. But God brought you to

  235. church on the first weekend of the year, and you're

  236. setting your heart in a different direction. Hold on, You're

  237. gonna love the presence of God this year. You're gonna

  238. love the word of God this year. You're gonna love

  239. the right things this year. Train your brain to hate it.

  240. Train your brain. I know that's what my dad was

  241. trying to do when he made us eat all the

  242. food on our plate when we overfilled it at the

  243. Ryan's buffet vacation Memories. He said, you're gonna eat every

  244. bite on that plate, and me and my brother took

  245. turns causing diversions while the other one stuffed our pockets,

  246. and we walked out of Ryan's with pockets full of food.

  247. Never forget it. He wanted me to have an association,

  248. he said, I want you to hate waste. Maybe that's

  249. why sometimes God lets us get so low. So I

  250. hate it, so I will despise Egypt, because if I

  251. didn't despise it, I would be tempted to go back. Hey,
