  1. Everybody say, shift happens.

  2. When he does it. I want to walk you through it.

  3. He picks up in verse eighteen, and the Bible is

  4. put in these verses for us, But originally there weren't

  5. like verses breaking up the different letters.

  6. It was just there so we can find it. But

  7. sometimes it jumps in in a weird place.

  8. And I think that happens in verse eighteen because Paul

  9. says verse eighteen, but what does it matter? And that's

  10. a phrase that you should use as well.

  11. What does it matter? What does it matter? Y'all pray

  12. for me that I would.

  13. Get better at that because I take little things really seriously.

  14. So he holly laughed when I made that. That's a

  15. good sign. And he says, you know, what matters?

  16. The important thing, the priority is that in every way,

  17. whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. That's

  18. what matters to me. And so everything that serves that

  19. purpose is fine with me, whether I like it or not.

  20. In the moment, that's what matters to me. What matters

  21. to you?

  22. What matters to you, Because what matters to you will

  23. determine the direction that you point your life in. What

  24. matters to you, that's your destination. So Paul says, what

  25. matters to me is that Christ has preached, and that's happening.

  26. So you know, whatever they're saying about me, that's fine.

  27. For the important thing is that in every way, whether

  28. from false motives or true, Christ is preached. Because of this,

  29. I rejoice. Now, this next phrase to me should be

  30. a different verse. They put it right in the same verse.

  31. But when Paul makes this next statement, he goes into

  32. a completely different mode.

  33. He goes in a different zone.

  34. And what I want to show you is the next

  35. skill that Paul teaches us. And this is not the

  36. skill of interpretation. This is the skill come on, say

  37. it when you got it anticipation, because like we'll a

  38. fortune up in here today trying to buy a vow.

  39. Figure out what I'm writing on this court.

  40. He shifts and he says, now that I've given you

  41. my interpretation of what has happened, let me give you

  42. my anticipation of what.

  43. Say it of what happened. And on one level, Paul says,

  44. I don't know.

  45. They might kill me, I might live. I'm not sure

  46. about that part. But I want you to notice the

  47. frame of mind and the state of consciousness that Paul

  48. engages over these ten verses, starting with eighteen B where

  49. I read to you, where he said yes and I

  50. will continue to rejoice.

  51. He uses the word will. He's shifting.

  52. Now, I've spent enough time talking to you about what happened.

  53. That's over. Can't control it, can't do anything about it. Okay,

  54. I've acknowledged it, I've interpreted it.

  55. That's that.

  56. Now I'm moving forward. Now I want to tell you

  57. what will happen. And I want us to do an exercise, okay,

  58. on every campus.

  59. So this is for those of you at Butler High.

  60. School, Matthew's campus, temporarily homeless. This is for our uptown location.

  61. This is for Weddington, This is for University City, This

  62. is for Lake Norman. This is even for those in Raleigh,

  63. North Carolina, and Toronto, Canada who had record attendance last weekend.

  64. I want all of you, whether you're good at math

  65. or not, I want you to count with me the

  66. number of times that the word will is used in

  67. these ten verses that start in verse eighteen. There's the

  68. first one. You already got it, so put your hand up.

  69. Is one, he said, I will continue to rejoice. Count

  70. out loud. That's next verse. I know he's confident about this,

  71. that through your prayers and God's provision of the spirit

  72. of Jesus Christ, what has happened to.

  73. Me will turn out for my deliverance.

  74. I eagerly expect and hope that I in no way

  75. be as shame, but have sufficient courage so that now

  76. as always Christ be exalted in my body, whether by

  77. life or by death. I don't know what, but I

  78. know why. And so for me to live as Christ

  79. and to die is gain. If I'm to go on

  80. living in the body, this mean fruitful labor for me.

  81. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know.

  82. I'm torn between the two. I desired apartment be with Christ.

  83. When I put up with anything anymore, be luck Betterfies

  84. than Heaven. Much more necessary that I remain in the

  85. body for you. The midst of this, I know that

  86. I remain, and I continue with all of you for

  87. your progress. Maybe sometimes our life is meant to be

  88. more about somebody else's progress in our own.

  89. Come on, let's keep counting.

  90. And I just wanted to point that out because I

  91. was talking about progress and I wanted you to know

  92. sometimes it's not all about you, so that through my

  93. being with you again, you're boasting in Christ. Jesus abound

  94. on account of me. Whatever happens, what has happened, whatever happens,

  95. conduct yourself in a minne word of gospel Christ, and

  96. one that come see you want to hear about you

  97. my absence, I will know that you stand firm in

  98. one spirit. Now only about three of you counted with

  99. me through the whole time. But if you counted ten,

  100. you counted right, ten verses and ten times. He doesn't

  101. say has, He says will. He doesn't say maybe. He

  102. says will why because he has an eager expectation. Did

  103. you see it in verse twenty? And this is what

  104. we need? Okay, he said, I eagerly expect and hope.

  105. How many are enjoying the Bible lesson today? He said,

  106. I eagerly twenty expect and hope.

  107. I eagerly expect and hope.

  108. I was interested to learn Jody Jennings that in Greek

  109. eagerly expect and hope.

  110. Are not verbs, but they're nouns.

  111. And they're joined together by the word kai in Greek

  112. means and, and they have within them the idea. And

  113. this is where I really need you to focus, because

  114. I flunk Greek in college, and then I took it

  115. again in seminary and I passed with a C plus.

  116. And I'm only telling you that for full disclosure to

  117. let you know that I don't typically walk around my

  118. house quoting Greek. But when I saw this in the text,

  119. it was worth bringing out because when Paul says I

  120. eagerly expect, he uses a word here's what's crazy, that

  121. has never been used before.

  122. He made up his own word to describe.

  123. The kind of hope that you have to have to

  124. survive in a situation where there seems to be no

  125. way out. Paul said, this is the kind of hope

  126. that there is no vocabulary for. So Paul had to

  127. take three words and put them together to make a

  128. new word to describe the kind of hope that can

  129. make you look at your kid on drugs and your

  130. husband acting crazy, and your money low and your emotions erect,

  131. and say I still have an expectation and I still

  132. have a hope. And so he looks through his vocabulary

  133. he goes, I can't even I can't even think.

  134. Of how to tell you how I feel about it

  135. right now. I can't.

  136. There's no word, So I'm gonna I'm gonna make one

  137. up and uh and he makes up this word, and

  138. I'm gonna give it to you right now, and you're

  139. gonna use it this week. The word in Greek is

  140. it's made up of three words. H come on, let's

  141. say it together on the ground, count of three, one

  142. two three.

  143. All right, we're gonna need some remedial classes.

  144. Appo carra, dokia, appo carra, dokia, apacara, apacara, donkia, come on,

  145. apocar kidd.

  146. Opo.

  147. It means to turn away with concentration, ignoring other interests.

  148. That's the prefix.

  149. You know, Paul is good because I could preach a

  150. whole sermon just on his prefix Apo.

  151. He said, I'm in a situation right now when.

  152. If I look to my left, I see prison walls.

  153. If I look to my right, I see prison walls.

  154. If I look to my feet, I see a prisoner's chains.

  155. So I gotta turn my head intentionally from what's over

  156. here and what's over here. Everybody said, Apo, sometimes you

  157. got to turn your head.

  158. From what's here and what's here and what's here.

  159. And so we said, I turn my head on purpose,

  160. ignoring what.

  161. I could be focused on. Apo apo apo apakarra Karra

  162. means head. It doesn't require explanation. It literally means head.

  163. Apacara Pacara Dokia a company that was originally founded in

  164. Sweden that sells ready to assemble home furniture and appliances

  165. and accessories Dokia. Dokia originally means I'm trying man to

  166. stretch forward.

  167. So when you put it together, you get this meaning.

  168. And I'm gonna teach this to you and we are

  169. gonna break it out on whatever situation comes up in

  170. your life this week that tries to break your focus

  171. or steal your faith. You need a little bit of

  172. apocara Dokia, which means stretching the head forward.

  173. You missed it. I'm coming to this side.

  174. He said, I'm in a prison cell right now and

  175. I can't move.

  176. I wish I was a better preacher.

  177. If I was a better preacher, you'd get excited about

  178. apple caraa Dokia because he said, I can't move my feet,

  179. I can't move my body, but I'm stretching my head

  180. forward toward.

  181. The future, and so I will.

  182. Rejoice because I'm stretching my head forward. Would you touch

  183. three people, tell him stretch your head.

  184. Stretch your head. See, here's the.

  185. Problem with a lot of people, a lot of people.

  186. We have our heads so far up our past.

  187. That we.

  188. That we can't see that we can't see our future.

  189. But God brought you to church today. That gets your.

  190. Head out your past and give you a little apple

  191. Kara Dokia. Faith and ignor expectation. I'm stretching my head

  192. toward what's next. I'm not stuck in what was, I'm

  193. not worried about what's non people. I'm stretching my head

  194. toward Monday. I'm stretching my head toward next year. I'm

  195. stretching my head toward retirement. I'm stretching my head toward fullness.

  196. I'm stretching my head toward healing. I'm stretching my head

  197. toward my mission. Let's practice. Jump up on your feet.

  198. This is a series called functional faith. Shove your neighbor,

  199. tell them stretch your head. If you're gonna be fit,

  200. you gotta stretch. If you're gonna have faith, you gotta stretch.

  201. If you don't stretch, you might break. So let's stretch.

  202. Come on, let's stretch.

  203. Our hand strings First of all, I know how to

  204. stretch my hand strings.

  205. I know how to stretch my hand strings.

  206. That's about as far down as I'm willing to go

  207. in this tight suit to demonstrated to.

  208. You bad things, man, bad things. But I know how

  209. to stretch my handstrings. I know how to stretch my back.

  210. I know how to I know how to stretch my body.

  211. But nobody teaches us how to stretch our head. Appercoradokia,

  212. stretch your head, Appercrudokia. There is a brighter day, Appercrudokia.

  213. It does make a difference. Appercrudokia. God is working in

  214. my situation. Come on, say it, Appercrudokia. Tell the devil

  215. what you got. Tell them devil, I got that, Appercoradokia.

  216. And the next time you run up on me with discouragement,

  217. you need to know.

  218. I'm turning my head, I'm stretching my neck. Can apper Cardoki,

  219. the devil, he come on, this is better than Brazilian

  220. jiu jitsu. This is better than taekwondo. This is gonna

  221. teach you how to stick your neck out.

  222. And I got good news for you.

  223. Paul said, it doesn't matter if they kill me or

  224. they let me live because this is not a situational interpretation.

  225. This is not a situational anticipation. I feel like preaching this.

  226. I'm done teaching now. I'm in full of preaching mode.

  227. On the count of three, when I say three, I

  228. want you to start with your head to the right.

  229. You're of the right. And when I say.

  230. Three, I want you to turn your head. And this

  231. symbolic of all of the distractions that aren't going to

  232. distract you this week, and all of the cynicism that

  233. you're not even going to pay any attention to this week.

  234. I want you to turn your head. I want you

  235. to give them an APPO. On three, this is your APO.

  236. What two? Three? Turn it? You missed it?

  237. One quick enough? Turn your head to the left. Come on,

  238. we got a practice. I am your spiritual trainer. I'm

  239. trying to teach you what to do when life gets

  240. stuck and I'm not here for you. And you look

  241. into the right and you look into the left on

  242. the cou I want you to jerk your head forward

  243. and give yourself whiplacks. One, two, three, APO, do it again.

  244. Head to the right.

  245. You're looking at that person trying to see what they

  246. think of you looking at that situation, trying to see.

  247. How it's gonna turn out well.

  248. On the counter, three, we got some apo for the devil.

  249. On the counter three turn your head, shout oppo one

  250. two three.

  251. That's the first step. Now we need the donkia, everybody

  252. say dokyo.

  253. Now we need that thing where you stretch your neck

  254. like a giraffe, where you look forward to your future

  255. and smile at it, where you look forward to problems

  256. and difficulties and say, I got something for you called

  257. the spirit of God for me to live as Christ

  258. and to guy is gained. What's Paul saying. He's saying,

  259. either way this turns out, I'm coming out ahead.

  260. You missed it, he said.

  261. I don't know what's gonna happen next, but I'm headed

  262. in the right direction. Somebody shout, somebody shout, somebody shout,

  263. somebody shout, somebody shout, somebody's shout somehow. I'm not there yet,

  264. but I'm headed in the right correction. I got my

  265. focus on, I got my brave on, I got my

  266. courage home, I got my whole pong, I got my

  267. faith on.

  268. Get your hands out your pocket. And when I.

  269. Say three I want you to stretch your neck towards

  270. your future.

  271. What two three?

  272. Stress you missed it?

  273. Let's do it on every campus.

  274. Come on the counter three, stretch your head. I p

  275. Carl Tokyo and tell the devil I'm coming toward my future.

  276. In think what two three? Again? What? Two three?

  277. What?

  278. Two three?

  279. I pull? What?

  280. Two three?

  281. What?

  282. Two three? Don't you what? Two three?

  283. Fo? What?

  284. Two three? You got it? You got it?

  285. You got it, you got.

  286. It, you got it, you got it. Lad like you

  287. got it, shouts.

  288. Like you got it, rejoice like you got God. Well,

  289. God tell you to chice.

  290. Sorry to me, I feel cud about it.

  291. To live this thrice denying guy, and I'm coming out ahead.

  292. Yeah? Why two three? Whoa two three? This your new

  293. cadence this week.

  294. You're not going into this week like thinking about what

  295. happened when you were thirteen. I got some for regret.

  296. It's called Applecara. Donkia turn my head from that. If

  297. I think about that too long, I get depressed. If

  298. I think about that too long, I start bitter. If

  299. I look over here, I might get jealous. If I

  300. look over there, I might get discouraged. So I gotta

  301. stretch my head toward my future.

  302. In faith, I will, I will, I will.

  303. Go.
