  1. It's frustrating when life feels unfruitful.

  2. There's nothing more fulfilling than bearing the fruit you're meant

  3. to bear because of the seed God put in you.

  4. But there's nothing more frustrating. And I'm not talking about

  5. feeling unfruitful.

  6. When you haven't sown any seed.

  7. Because I have no right to be disappointed about the

  8. fruit that wasn't born from.

  9. The seed I didn't sow.

  10. I have no right to be disappointed about the A

  11. I didn't get from the book I didn't open. But

  12. when I did study, when I was a good person,

  13. when I was planted in church, find a young couple

  14. that has been trying to have a baby for three

  15. and a half years, struggling with infertility, and one of

  16. their couple's friends that they hang out with got pregnant

  17. on accident and is complaining about it.

  18. The frustration of unfruitfulness.

  19. Find a man who went to school for a certain

  20. trade and now is working in an industry that will

  21. barely provide for his family. And he's way overqualified for

  22. what he's doing. There's nothing more frustrating than feeling unfruitful.

  23. Notice I said feeling unfruitful. I didn't say being unfruitful.

  24. Because the fact is, some of the times in your

  25. life that feel the least fruitful and the most frustrating

  26. are actually the times in your life where God is

  27. preparing you and tilling you and cultivating your character for

  28. the greatest gifts that he's gonna give. Has anybody experienced this? See,

  29. it's the difference between being cut off and cut back.

  30. Now I want to preach because somebody came into church

  31. today feeling cut off. You feel cut off from opportunities

  32. and cut off from potential and.

  33. Cut off from purpose.

  34. But what I want to tell you, like Holly told

  35. Elijah when we drove by those crepe myrtles and it

  36. looked like those men quit caring about those plants. It

  37. looked like that man had lost his mind. It looked

  38. like that man had no good sense. What Holly told

  39. Elijah is he cuts them back.

  40. So they can grow.

  41. Back better than they ever did before. To get them

  42. ready for the next season. I came to tell somebody.

  43. Give me that camera.

  44. I came to tell somebody. You're not cut off. You

  45. were just cut back. You're not cut off. You were

  46. just cut back. God wasn't cutting you down because he's

  47. done with you. He was cutting you back because he's

  48. got something more in store.

  49. Tell somebody say it's just a cut back.

  50. And if it's cut back, that means it's coming back.

  51. Good measure.

  52. Press down. Shake it together.

  53. Running over. It's coming back.

  54. My joy is coming back. My peace is coming back.

  55. All right.

  56. I'm going to get them standing in the back before

  57. I'm done.

  58. It's just a cut back. It's just a cut back.

  59. It's just a cut back.

  60. Before church started, right when the choir was singing so beautifully,

  61. I got struck by a thought.

  62. I never do this because I like to worship.

  63. I don't like to be preparing my sermon while I'm

  64. supposed to be worshiping. I'm supposed to have that done already.

  65. But the Lord hit me with something so strong. I said,

  66. go get a notebook.

  67. I need to write something down.

  68. And I found a post-it note and I wrote down,

  69. let me go back so I can read it now.

  70. This is why I had to write it down. Because

  71. I need to say it to you just like this.

  72. Life may make the cut, but God is holding the scissors.

  73. And I felt like if I would say that to somebody,

  74. it would change your perspective on.

  75. The pain you're experiencing.

  76. Because all you can see is what people are doing

  77. to you.

  78. Snip, snip.

  79. All you can see is what the company did to you.

  80. Snip, snip.

  81. All you can see is what the disease is doing

  82. to your mom.

  83. Snip, snip.

  84. But if you can ever realize that no matter how

  85. life cuts you, it's God that controls your destiny. My

  86. father is the gardener. He knows just where to cut,

  87. when to cut, how to cut to make it grow

  88. back better.

  89. Told you they'd be standing in the back.

  90. Who was that for?

  91. Life may be cutting you. People may be cutting you.

  92. But God is superintending this process.

  93. It's just a cutback. I'm not cut off. I'm cut back.

  94. I might be down. I'm not out. I feel unfruitful.

  95. But though there is no fruit on the vine, no

  96. cattle in the stalls, I will rejoice.

  97. Please, please believe me when I say I know the

  98. frustration of unfruitfulness. I know what it feels like when

  99. you put a lot into people and.

  100. They let you down.

  101. I know what it feels like to be the person who.

  102. Somebody put a lot in and let them down. Nobody

  103. ever preaches about the other side of that, by the way.

  104. I know the frustration of unfruitfulness.

  105. And yet in this beautiful passage of Scripture, John 15,

  106. which everybody in the church has memorized, He said, I'm

  107. working on it. In other words, this may take a while.

  108. He just proved my subject. This may take a while.

  109. Come on, tell the person next to you.

  110. This may take a while. I preached last week. The

  111. problem is the pattern. So you went home and you

  112. tried to change the pattern. By Tuesday, you quit. That

  113. didn't work. It's Tuesday.

  114. It's been two days since Since I preached, you're trying

  115. to undo 22 years of patterns in two days.

  116. This may take a while.

  117. You cheated on your wife four times and you expect

  118. her to forgive you in four minutes.

  119. This may take a while. Your kids saw you live

  120. without God for 14 years.

  121. And now you don't understand why they don't want to

  122. come to church with you and they think you're a hypocrite?

  123. This may take a while.

  124. You've been eating one way, thinking one way, approaching life

  125. one way. You want God to undo in 45 minutes

  126. of preaching what took 45 years of living to plant

  127. in the soil? This may take a while. The hardest

  128. thing in life, I'm shifting to another thought, but it's

  129. under the same subject because.

  130. What we're after is fruitfulness. That's what you really want

  131. in your life.

  132. When you see people chasing after fame, what they really

  133. want is fruit. When you see people chasing after fortune,

  134. what they really want is fruit. And sometimes fame is

  135. a byproduct of fruit. And sometimes fortune is a byproduct

  136. of fruit. But what we all really want is I

  137. want my life to be more than it was. I

  138. want it to be more next year than it was

  139. last year.

  140. I want it to be more in a decade. I

  141. want my life to be greater in peace.

  142. And I want to be greater in wisdom. And I

  143. want my home to be greater in love.

  144. I want to be fruitful. But I'm frustrated. Frustrated.

  145. All because of this one little word, while. He cuts

  146. off every branch in me, verse 2, that bears no fruit.

  147. While. While. I don't even like the word while.

  148. Because it's indefinite.

  149. While means while this is happening, that's happening. Well, I

  150. don't want to miss that.

  151. But I'm doing this. I don't like things to be

  152. happening while I'm doing something else. I don't like you

  153. to be posting something on Instagram while I'm trying to preach.

  154. While we're here, we're doing this. I don't like that.

  155. I don't like that very much.

  156. I especially don't like it when it refers to a

  157. period of time.

  158. Because what does that mean?

  159. A while.

  160. A while? Well, the writer of Hebrews one.

  161. Time, he was trying to encourage the Christians not to

  162. give up and they were persecuted. And he told them something,

  163. Hebrews 10 verse 37. He said, and I don't have

    Hebrews 10:37

  164. this one memorized. He said, for in just a little while.

  165. He who is coming will come and not delay. When?

  166. A little while.

  167. But then the Bible also says in Peter that a

  168. day to the Lord is like a thousand years and

  169. a thousand years is like a day. So I'm not

  170. sure I'm very comfortable with God's definition of a while.

  171. Because if by a while you mean 15 minutes, we're good.

  172. But if by a while you mean 15 years, I'm.

  173. Not so sure about this. And it's hard to commit

  174. to consistency. Consistency.

  175. When you have no frame of reference for the duration.

  176. Yet we're all driven by a sense. that destiny has deadlines.

  177. And I might be missing my season to bear fruit.

  178. I might be missing my season to make it happen.

  179. This might be the only chance I have to make

  180. a run at it.

  181. This might be my window of opportunity.

  182. The great preacher Leonard Ravenhill said that the opportunity of

  183. a lifetime must be seized in the lifetime of the opportunity.

  184. What's he saying? You got to strike while the iron

  185. is hot. There's a window called while. While.

  186. While your kids are young, you have a very profound.

  187. Opportunity to be their parent.

  188. But after they hit a certain age, let's be honest,

  189. you're really nothing more than an advisor at best.

  190. Only have a little while to do this. Only have

  191. a little while where I'm.

  192. Going to feel enough energy to preach, you know, three

  193. times a weekend.

  194. Full blast. So I got to do it while I can.

  195. And I can't. I can't.

  196. I can't do it with my whole heart if I'm

  197. focused on a lot of things that aren't worth my

  198. while at all. And some of you are missing what

  199. you should be doing while you have the chance because

  200. you got your mind on stuff that's not worth your while.

  201. Come on, Nehemiah, help us.

  202. Nehemiah in the Old Testament was overseeing a construction project

  203. to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, right?

  204. He only had a little while to do it.

  205. He got special permission from the king whom he had

  206. served as cupbearer to go back, check out the situation.

  207. He had resources, he had time, but he only had

  208. so much. God is an unlimited resource. That's why Jesus

  209. is divine. You are a limited resource. That's why you're

  210. the branch. You only have a while. The grass withers.

  211. The flowers fade. The days of man are like grass

  212. here today, gone tomorrow.

  213. I only have a little while.

  214. I only.

  215. I only have a little while for this. I know

  216. it seems long, but it's really only a little while.

  217. It's just a little while. So Nehemiah sets out.

  218. And begins the great work of rebuilding the walls and

  219. is going well. He's fired up everybody in the vicinity

  220. except the enemies because when everybody gets fired up, about

  221. the work of God, there will be a pushback from

  222. the surrounding people who are afraid that they're losing territory.

  223. Because of what God is building.

  224. Nehemiah's situation exhibits this because the enemies tried to call

  225. him out of where he was supposed to be and

  226. while he was building, they wanted to arrange for him

  227. to have a meeting with them and they were conspiring

  228. to hurt him. They were conspiring to distract him. They

  229. were conspiring to get him off the wall. They were

  230. conspiring to try to get his opportunity to expire in

  231. the lifetime of the opportunity. They were trying to get

  232. him to waste days. They were trying to get him

  233. to waste thoughts. They were trying to get him to

  234. lose focus. And they said, come meet with us in

  235. the plains of Ono. And I love Nehemiah because he said,

  236. oh no. Everybody say, oh no. Sometimes you got to

  237. learn how to tell your enemy, oh no. Oh no,

  238. that's not worth my while. Watch Nehemiah.

  239. This is a master class on leadership, y'all. So I

  240. sent messengers to them. He didn't even have the conversation himself.

  241. I'm not even having this conversation. This is not worth

  242. my while.

  243. He said, I sent messengers to them with this reply.

  244. I am carrying on a great project. I am building

  245. a great family. I am putting my all into getting

  246. this degree. I am restoring some stuff that the enemy stole.

  247. I am carrying on a great project. I'm in the

  248. middle of something important and cannot go down. Why should

  249. the work stop while I leave it and go down

  250. to you? Some of you came off the wall for

  251. some stuff last year that wasn't worth your while. And

  252. while you were down off the wall, not laying bricks,

  253. the enemy was laughing and life was passing. And you

  254. spent 32% roughly of your mental energy having arguments with

  255. people who aren't even in your life anymore about what

  256. they did to you. And you didn't have the focus

  257. to give. One time David was getting a report, David

  258. in the Bible, King David, he was getting a report

  259. from one of his generals, that his son who had

  260. rebelled against him had been successfully taken out. David was

  261. so upset about losing his son that he couldn't celebrate

  262. the victory that his men had given.

  263. And the commander said something to him.

  264. He said, you love those who hate you and you

  265. hate those who love you. You are giving so much

  266. of yourself trying to.

  267. Get approval from people who.

  268. Aren't even paying attention to you, that while you're focused

  269. on building that image that you think will make them

  270. like you, you are losing the moments with the people

  271. who really love you. You are so stuck in what

  272. happened that you're missing what's happening. And I wanted to

  273. say to somebody, whoever it is today that's chasing down

  274. opportunities that have long since passed, let it go.

  275. It's not worth your while.

  276. It's over.

  277. It's gone. It hurt. It happened.

  278. Yes.

  279. But it's not worth your while.

  280. To stand in dead places, regretting dead dreams that will

  281. never come to pass. It's not worth your while. Holding

  282. on to an offense is not worth your while. Complaining

  283. about how you were raised is not.

  284. Worth your while.

  285. Resenting the opportunities that you didn't have is not worth

  286. your while because while you're focused on that you can't

  287. build this every moment you spend on the plains of

  288. oh no is the moment you sacrifice that you could

  289. be putting another brick on the wall Now come on,

  290. let's get back to building. Let's get back to construction.

  291. Let's get back to the great project God has called

  292. you to. Let's get back to what's worthwhile. What's really worthwhile?

  293. That's what I want to answer today. What's really worth

  294. your while? See, you can't be consistent at everything. So

  295. we're in a series about challenging our inconsistencies. But the

  296. first thing to challenging our inconsistencies is to prune the

  297. things that shouldn't be a priority. Because if there's too

  298. many branches in your life and there's too many pursuits,

  299. it's going to be sucking all the stuff that should

  300. be flowing somewhere else. If there's too many commitments, you

  301. won't be consistent in any of them.

  302. So God says, like I.

  303. Prune you, I want you to prune your own life.

  304. I want you to prune your priorities. I want you

  305. to ask the question that even adults rarely stop to ask.

  306. Is this worthwhile?

  307. To make decisions at a different level so you can

  308. keep commitments at.

  309. A higher one. Hey, thank you for watching.
