  1. Sometimes I need too much from the wrong place. Sometimes

  2. I'm thirsty because I love God and I know that

  3. he's my shepherd and I'm not supposed to be in

  4. need and I have his spirit. But sometimes I got

  5. to admit to you, I'm kind of thirsty. Look at

  6. your neighbor and ask him, are you thirsty? Not you.

  7. You're filled with the spirit of God. Oh, we get thirsty.

  8. And it's no surprise we get thirsty because we're weak.

  9. He knows our frame. We're made of dust. Came from

  10. the dust. Get thirsty in the dust. Dirty, thirsty people.

  11. I mean, that makes sense.

  12. But for Jesus to say, I thirst and watch this

  13. when he said it, the Bible says they came to him,

  14. those soldiers around the cross. And he said, I thirst.

  15. And there was a jar full of sour wine, cheap stuff.

  16. what the executioners drank while they were waiting on the

  17. person to die. Now see, this was the second drink

  18. that Jesus was offered on the cross, but the first

  19. one he refused when he was on his way to

  20. the cross, when he got to the spot where they

  21. would drop the cross, the vertical beam, and attach to

  22. the horizontal beam because the cross works both ways. I

  23. taught you that two weeks ago. When he got to

  24. that spot, they offered him a drink. This drink was

  25. the Bible says, mixed with myrrh, which was meant to

  26. drug the person going to the cross.

  27. The women would prepare it.

  28. Often as an act of compassion or kindness. And when

  29. they offered him this drink, perhaps in mockery, for he

  30. called himself a king, and they offered him a drink.

  31. Mark tells us in Mark, I think it's.

  32. Like 15, 23, they offered him wine mixed with myrrh,

  33. but he did not take it because maybe he saw

  34. it as a trap. Because he was focused on finishing

  35. what God gave him to do. And when he got

  36. to the cross, he refused the drink and said.

  37. I don't need that. Now, I want you to do

  38. something for me, okay? Everybody do this. Everybody do this.

  39. I want you to get something in your mind that's

  40. trying to keep you from being.

  41. On the path of your purpose.

  42. And when I say three, push it out the way

  43. like Jesus pushed the cup of myrrh and say, I

  44. don't need it. One, two, three, I don't need it.

  45. He said, I'm not drinking that. I'm going somewhere. With

  46. his gaze set on the glory.

  47. Of God, he went toward the cross.

  48. But now it's been six hours since he first got

  49. to Golgotha, and he says, I thirst.

  50. Remember, this is the same.

  51. Voice of God that created the clouds and filled them

  52. with condensation. This is the voice that has the power

  53. to flood the earth. And only Noah and every animal

  54. on the boat gets out of it a lot. And

  55. he thirsts.

  56. So we're surprised by it, or at least we should be.

  57. And we're surprised when they come to him and there's

  58. a jar of sour wine and they offer to the

  59. Lamb of God who was slain before the foundation of

  60. the earth. You need to understand that what happened on

  61. the cross didn't start on the cross and it didn't

  62. end on the cross. The cross was pointing at the

  63. prophetic fulfillment of the purpose of God.

  64. That existed before time began. So they take a hyssop branch.

  65. Which was what they used on Passover, back when they

  66. would take the blood of a lamb and put it

  67. on a doorpost, and so they took that branch that

  68. they would put the blood on, and now the Lamb

  69. of God is bleeding. It's not the shadow anymore. It's

  70. the actuality, the revelation of God. The fullness of God

  71. is hanging on a cross in the.

  72. Form of a man, and they give him vinegar to

  73. drink for his thirst.

  74. And they put it to his mouth, the same mouth

  75. that spoke them into existence. And they gave him vinegar

  76. to drink. How could he be thirsty? How could God

  77. struggle with a human sensation like thirst?

  78. Struggle. If you want to write something down, write down struggle.

  79. Because to really understand why he said, I thirst on

  80. the cross. you would have to start really in the

  81. Garden of Gethsemane. The Garden of Gethsemane is where he

  82. went out to pray before he drank the cup of suffering.

  83. And it's one thing to come to.

  84. Church and talk about a calling because sometimes a calling

  85. is like a beautiful cup, but what's in it sometimes,

  86. when it comes time to really fulfill your calling, me

  87. break this down because y'all are really looking at me

  88. cross-eyed and stuff. It's one thing to pick out a

  89. name for your baby. It's another thing to have to

  90. raise them in middle school.

  91. It didn't work. It still didn't work.

  92. I'm trying really hard to bring this right where you are.

  93. It is one thing to write down his last name

  94. with your first name and think about how awesome it

  95. would be.

  96. To be Mrs.

  97. So-and-so, but it's another thing to deal with his bad

  98. breath and his bad spending habits and realized that his

  99. mom didn't teach him how to put the seat down

  100. on the toilet after he used it and work out

  101. the mechanics of marriage in the context of the calling,

  102. not just the excitement of.

  103. The concept of something. So sometimes while we.

  104. Are very excited about the concept of being used by God,

  105. stay with me because this sermon is about to do

  106. something in your soul, deep down.

  107. In your soul.

  108. I feel the Spirit of God saying to somebody today,

  109. what will you do the cup because jesus had a

  110. cup that he didn't want to drink and he prayed

  111. in the garden he prayed father if there's any other way.

  112. To get this done.

  113. If there's any other way let this cup pass from

  114. me the cup that was full of the wrath of

  115. god the just punishment that our sin deserved And he

  116. drank it, but he struggled to drink it.

  117. Do you know how I know he struggled?

  118. Because he prayed, if there's any other way, let this

  119. cup pass. But if there's not, if I have to

  120. drink it down. If I have to suffer, if I

  121. have to go to the cross, I'm going to the cross.

  122. If I have to be mocked, I'll be mocked. If

  123. I have to be alone, I'll be alone. If I

  124. have to cry, I'll cry. If I have to struggle,

  125. I'll struggle. Not my will, but yours be done. The

  126. Son of God is thirsty, and he's thirsty because he's trapped.

  127. He's trapped in a place that we're all familiar with.

  128. He's trapped between what he wants and what God wills.

  129. Have you ever been trapped? Three honest people. Three thirsty people.

  130. All the thirsty people make some noise. Just be honest

  131. about it, because remember, it's only those who hunger and

  132. thirst that can be filled. It's only those who know

  133. what it's like. I mean, he got down in that garden,

  134. and he prayed so hard about it, and he heard

  135. so much about it, while Peter, James, and John slept

  136. on the side. But Jesus prayed. The Bible says he

  137. prayed to the point that his sweat.

  138. Was like drops of blood. He struggled. to surrender.

  139. He was trapped in the garden between what God had spoken.

  140. And what his flesh wanted.

  141. I'm thirsty. Of course he's thirsty. When you sweat like that,

  142. you're going to be thirsty. I mean, if the Son

  143. of God sweat like that, what makes you think you're

  144. going to go through life and never break one yourself?

  145. So we think we're just supposed to fulfill our calling

  146. and never.

  147. Drink the cup?

  148. We think we're supposed to have a vision but no vinegar?

  149. I mean, the Son of God is sweating drops of

  150. blood and we're supposed to.

  151. Be able to sleep through life? It's a struggle. He said,

  152. I thirst because he struggled. People, I know he was thirsty.

  153. I mean, he's fully God, yes, but he's also fully man.

  154. In other words, he's trapped.

  155. Because he's God, but he's wrapped in flesh. Because he's glory,

  156. but he's wrapped in frailty. Because he's eternity, but he's

  157. trapped in time. Because he's spirit, but he's trapped in

  158. a body. Sometimes I feel trapped because what I.

  159. Want to do, I can't do. And what I do,

  160. I hate. And what I want to.

  161. Do, I don't have the will to do.

  162. I'm trapped.

  163. Thirsty, tired, I'm weary, and he struggled. See, I'm not

  164. very comfortable with this. I don't like it, because I

  165. don't really want to see a God who struggled like

  166. I struggled. I like that stuff where he opens his

  167. mouth and says, shut up. to the wind and the waves.

  168. I like that because that makes me think he's just

  169. going to walk into my situation. Smooth sailing. But when

  170. he says I thirst, see, now I see him identifying

  171. with my shame, and it causes me to look at

  172. myself not as I wish to be, but as I

  173. really am. Because now I've got to picture him carrying

  174. my shame. Write down shame because shame will make you thirsty.

  175. Shame will make you try to fill something with the

  176. words of people that can really only be fulfilled by

  177. the word of God. Shame will make you forget who

  178. you really are. Of course he was thirsty. He was

  179. carrying your shame. Now, I mean, To an untrained eye,

  180. it looked like he was carrying a beam that weighed

  181. 80 pounds.

  182. And he carried it up a hill.

  183. Now, this is from Pilate's palace where Jesus was sentenced

  184. by the Roman prelate. He had already been handed over

  185. by Caiaphas, the high priest. He's been going back and

  186. forth all night. He sweats in the garden. He heads

  187. to the cross. He gets there. They offer him something to.

  188. Numb the pain. He says, no, I'm focused. No, not yet.

  189. He pushes the drink aside, thirsty as he is, carrying

  190. my shame. 80 pounds. You know, it weighs a lot

  191. more than that when it's in your soul. A whole

  192. lot more than 80 pounds. It weighs a whole lot more.

  193. It'll weigh so much you can't even look people in

  194. the eye when it's in your soul. And he carried that.

  195. He carried it. The length of six and a half

  196. football fields from Pilate's palace to Golgotha.

  197. Of course he was thirsty.

  198. Come on, I can't even do a set of kettlebell

  199. swings and not take a sip.

  200. Of course he was thirsty.

  201. Of course he said, I thirst.

  202. And you know what?

  203. This isn't the first time that Jesus said he was

  204. thirsty in John's gospel.

  205. No, it's not, man. Not at all. See, because one time,

  206. can I tell you a story? From the Bible. It's

  207. a Bible story from John chapter four.

  208. And it's interesting because Jesus is going somewhere, but he

  209. goes around to get there. And the place where he

  210. goes is called Samaria. Now, this is not a normal

  211. place for a Jew to go. So the fact that

  212. he went there was kind of surprising, but nobody asked

  213. him why he was doing what he was doing, because

  214. by this time his disciples knew that everything he did,

  215. he did on purpose.

  216. Let me say that again. Everything he did, he did

  217. on purpose.

  218. That's going to come back, and that's going to be

  219. very important when I finish this little sermonette today.

  220. Everything he did, he did on purpose.

  221. So the Bible says he had to go to Samaria.

  222. He had to go. Why?

  223. Why did he have to go to Samaria? Why did

  224. he have to go to the cross? Why would he

  225. go out of his way to Samaria where a Jewish

  226. person would not normally go? Why would God go where

  227. he was least expected? Do you ever wonder why God

  228. would bother with someone like you?

  229. Have you ever asked that question? Why me, God?

  230. Any parents that have ever asked God, why me? Why

  231. would you call me to raise a kid when I

  232. feel like a little boy myself sometimes? See, the interesting

  233. thing to me about this little excursion Jesus takes is

  234. that he's going to Samaria. He sits down when he

  235. gets there. He waits by a well for a woman.

  236. Let me tell you something about this woman. She's coming

  237. out in the middle of the day, and the only

  238. reason you would go to the well in the middle

  239. of the day in a hot climate is so nobody

  240. else would be there because you're ashamed to be seen

  241. by people. She's going out in the middle of the

  242. day to get some water at a time when she

  243. doesn't think anybody else will see her because she's thirsty.

  244. I said she's thirsty. And she's not just thirsty for water.

  245. She's thirsty.

  246. She's thirsty in the Urban Dictionary thirsty kind of way.

  247. So Jesus sits by a well waiting for a woman

  248. and sets a trap for a thirsty woman. Y'all aren't

  249. even helping me preach this sermon I worked so hard on.

  250. That's rude.

  251. So she comes up and says, Oh crap, I thought

  252. nobody would be here.

  253. I don't even know this guy.

  254. Have you noticed how everything we've been studying in the

  255. scriptures is Jesus showing up to people who didn't even

  256. recognize him when he did?

  257. Just showing up. And then he does something unthinkable. Talk

  258. about a thirst trap.

  259. Jesus, the living water, sees this woman coming, knows what

  260. kind of life she's lived, Yet he doesn't say anything

  261. about that.

  262. He says, Hey, girl. Modernization. He said, Look at verse 7.

  263. Give me a drink.

  264. She didn't like that very much, so she got a

  265. real deep look at her. Here's what you do when

  266. God speaks to a Place in your life when when

  267. God starts speaking to you you get theoretical and abstract

  268. because to be specific To really have to deal with

  269. the issue is actually sometimes painful, so she's like hey

  270. How is it that you a Jew asked to drink

  271. for me a woman from Samaria in other words?

  272. I know you're not talking to me That's what the

  273. woman saying.

  274. I know you're not talking to me and You can

  275. feel that way sometimes I mean, some of you sit

  276. here and listen to me preach, and you think it's

  277. for your wife. I'm talking to you. I'm talking to you, buddy.

  278. Thirsty self. Everybody in here is thirsty. Everybody in here

  279. is thirsty. Some of y'all get it through sex. Some

  280. of y'all get it through success. Some of y'all get

  281. it through religion. But I got to tell you something.

  282. The person you're sitting next.

  283. To is thirsty. It's not a sin to be thirsty.

  284. It's just where you go to.

  285. Get your fix that determines whether or not your soul

  286. will be satisfied.
