  1. When we come to Christ, there's often an expectation, unrealistic expectation,

  2. that he's going to take away our needs.

  3. And he doesn't.

  4. In fact, if you are a Christian, you still have

  5. the same needs now that you did before you met Jesus.

  6. The same needs, but they are now met in a

  7. different way. In other words, you still have the same

  8. need for approval. But now, instead of trying to get

  9. it from another human who doesn't even fully like themselves,

  10. you are getting it from the all-sufficient, all-knowing, all-seeing, ever-present,

  11. ever-living God who gives you breath. And who intricately knit

  12. you together in your mother's womb. So it's not that

  13. I don't have needs. It's not that I don't have wants.

  14. The Lord is my shepherd.

  15. I shall not want.

  16. That doesn't mean I never want anything, never need anything.

  17. It doesn't mean my appetite went away. It just means

  18. I go to a different buffet now. Amen.

  19. That means I eat off a different menu now.

  20. And sometimes we are so focused on people's behaviors that

  21. we can't discern the needs that drive the behaviors. And

  22. a lot of Christian teaching and preaching is focused on

  23. condemning behaviors without understanding the need. There is no need

  24. that you are currently meeting in your life that is

  25. an evil need or a bad need. And many of

  26. us who have various addictions need to hear this exact point.

  27. And maybe you can even leave after I say this

  28. because this may be the whole reason God brought you here.

  29. You're not meeting the wrong need. You're just meeting it

  30. with the wrong means. This applies to overspending, overeating, overtalking, overbragging,

  31. and yes, I hear you Facebook, oversharing. It applies to

  32. every sexual addiction. There's a certain shame that comes with

  33. sexual addiction, but there shouldn't be because all the addiction

  34. is is a valid need trying to express itself. It's

  35. a need for connection, which is.

  36. Very good and very God. It is not good for

  37. man to be alone.

  38. But loneliness, if left untreated, becomes lust.

  39. That's all lust is.

  40. Is the need for connection being met through something that

  41. has no ability to satisfy the need that it is

  42. trying to meet.

  43. So it becomes more and more and more and more

  44. and more.

  45. And Paul says, my God shall supply all your needs

  46. or meet all of your needs, not according to your resources,

  47. but according to his.

  48. And I'm glad about it.

  49. I'm glad that the only one who has what I

  50. need happens to be the only one who knows what

  51. I need.

  52. How many are glad about that?

  53. Let's give God five seconds of praise for knowing what

  54. we need and for being what we need. The Lord

  55. is my light and my salvation.

  56. Whom shall I fear? The Lord is.

  57. The strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid? Listen, Blakeney.

  58. When the wicked, even my enemies, came upon me, even

  59. they stumbled and fell. He prepares a table for me

  60. in the presence of my enemy. No, he doesn't take

  61. the need away. He becomes what I need. He meets

  62. my need. Some of us are waiting for God to

  63. remove the need, but if he removed the need.

  64. He would.

  65. Remove the means by which he meets the need to

  66. remind you that he is what I need. He not

  67. only gives it, he is it. Let's back up a

  68. little bit and let's talk about your need meter.

  69. You know, spell it different. If we spell it like this.

  70. Not that meters, but the other one. Need meter meter. Like,

  71. how needy are you? Like, what's your meter read? If

  72. we could read the meter on your need today, if

  73. it was right there on your forehead when you came

  74. in the house of God, what would we see if

  75. we could read your meter? What if we could read

  76. your joy meter today? Not your happy meter. Happy meter

  77. might be just caffeine. Starbucks can make you happy. And

  78. And yet there's this joy, this contentment, it's described in

  79. the scripture. Oh, don't let people smile confuse you, because

  80. some people's bone structure is.

  81. Just arranged in their face. They look like they're smiling, okay?

  82. Some people just have, you know, resting blessed face. And

  83. they just look happy, but it's covering up a lot

  84. of stuff.

  85. Don't worry about that.

  86. I'm saying like, The thing that we can't see, if

  87. we could see it, if you had a piece meter

  88. on your forehead today and we could see your piece meter,

  89. would it be like, or would it be like the

  90. gas gauge of a 16 year old who fills up

  91. $ 5 at a time, you know, filling up $ 5 at

  92. a time, a click at a time, a like at

  93. a time, a comment at a time, because here's what

  94. I've learned.

  95. About this.

  96. When joy is low, usually it's because entitlement is high.

  97. That's why the most joyful book in the Bible, according

  98. to many, was written in a prison cell, because Paul

  99. has come to the point where he says, I don't

  100. need it.

  101. I don't need it. He really means it. It's not like,

  102. The one preacher who got up, you know, I don't

  103. preach for the praise of men.

  104. Amen. Amen. Amen.

  105. He's really he's he's really found a place.

  106. He's really found a place of freedom from what he

  107. thinks he deserves. And once he set free from what

  108. he thinks he deserves and what he expected it to be.

  109. Oh, that's good. That's good.

  110. God just gave me that for this particular worship experience.

  111. I didn't say it any other time. Once he's set

  112. free from what he expected, he can receive what he needs.

  113. And sometimes what blocks.

  114. Us from receiving what we need is what we expected

  115. we would get. And when it doesn't show up like

  116. we expected, we can't receive what we need. Can I

  117. move a little deeper into this teaching?

  118. You good? Okay.

  119. Find Acts chapter 16. If you can find it in

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  120. your Bible or if you want to look it up

  121. on your phone. I always have a backup plan on

  122. the screen for you, just in case. In case it

  123. was hectic getting out of the house.

  124. It'll come up on the screen.

  125. And so God does something unusual in Acts 16 as

  126. Paul is taking the gospel out. And you have to

  127. understand that Paul isn't writing the principles in Philippians in

  128. a vacuum. He's writing them in the context of Historical

  129. relationship with people in a church and he loved them

  130. and he's right and saying thanks Got the gift gonna

  131. use it don't need it What i'm excited about is

  132. how god is going to use your gift to bless

  133. you That's what he's saying And it goes all the

  134. way back to how he met them to begin with

  135. And how many would say that some people in your

  136. life right now don't understand you properly because they don't

  137. know your background And they expect you to be farther

  138. along in certain areas, but you're like, if you only

  139. knew how good I'm doing to even be as far

  140. along as I am.

  141. I mean, I still cuss, but I used to beat people.

  142. And why I think we really do, Philippians... 419 a

  143. disservice is because we strip it of its context. So

  144. I thought we needed to look at this real quick

  145. to understand the stuff we shout over. My God will

  146. meet all your needs according to his glorious riches.

  147. And I'm sad, but that verse sounds great. So I'm

  148. going to shout over top of my sadness. It's because

  149. we don't understand the means. We don't understand the means.

  150. So let's go back several years earlier.

  151. Paul is is trying to get somewhere, verse 7, when

  152. they came to the border of Mycenae.

  153. He's got Timothy with him.

  154. And they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of

  155. Jesus would not allow them to.

  156. Wouldn't allow them to what? Wouldn't allow them to preach

  157. about Jesus. Jesus stopped his own PR campaign.

  158. That's very, very, very unusual. Very difficult for me to

  159. get my mind around until I get to the the

  160. next verses. Sometimes you do not understand at all what

  161. God is doing in the moment. Graham is so funny.

  162. We were coming to church today, and a lot of

  163. our staff kids went to camp last week. We had

  164. a staff advance last week, and I was sharing with

  165. the staff all week, and it was just a family

  166. event and family affair. Graham got to play Joseph in

  167. a skit in a small group at camp So he

  168. had the story of Joseph, the Old Testament Joseph, on

  169. his mind.

  170. And they sent me a.

  171. Video of him down on the ground when Potiphar's wife

  172. is accusing Joseph. uh potiphar's wife is called hot of

  173. her and um she was accused she was accusing him

  174. of of trying to make advances and graham was on

  175. the ground saying no i didn't do it but grandma

  176. asked me something he said do you think when the

  177. bible says god was with joseph you think joseph felt

  178. that way at the time i don't know it doesn't

  179. say how he felt it states the fact after the

  180. fact But you can't really know what God is doing

  181. until he's done it. And you don't really know what

  182. you need until you get what you want and find

  183. out it isn't even what you thought it was. So

  184. Paul wants to go to Asia, blocked. Paul wants to

  185. go to Mycenae, blocked. And he does something that you

  186. got to learn to do when you don't know what

  187. to do. Instead of going home, he goes into the

  188. place of active waiting. It means, God, I'm not just

  189. waiting for you to do something. I'm waiting on you.

  190. Like we used to not call them servers.

  191. It was waiters. I'm waiting on you. God, what would

  192. you like me to do in this season?

  193. So I'm praying for a new job, but I'm being

  194. nice at this one.

  195. Y'all don't want to help me preach.

  196. I'm praying for my kids' behavior to improve, but I'm

  197. not going to exemplify the exact behavior that I'm trying

  198. to correct by going off on them and demonstrating anger

  199. while I'm trying to correct anger.

  200. I'm actively waiting. And this place is called Troas.

  201. Bible says that since they couldn't get into Mycenae, they

  202. went down to Troas. This is a place of transition.

  203. It's a port city. Asia Minor one side.

  204. Europe on the other. Where are we going? What's God doing?

  205. I don't know, but I'm not going home. I don't know,

  206. but I'm not giving up. I don't know, but I'm

  207. not losing sight. I don't know, but I'm not going

  208. to go into despair.

  209. I don't know. I don't know.

  210. I mean, I thought it was God and I thought

  211. it was this and I moved to Charlotte or I

  212. moved to Raleigh or I moved to Winston and I

  213. had this idea and I had this plan, but God's

  214. purpose is greater than my plan.

  215. So I am in the place.

  216. I'm positioned to hear God's voice and God speaks to

  217. Paul in that place.

  218. God speaks to Paul.

  219. I believe he's going to speak to somebody here today too.

  220. During the night, verse nine, not in the daytime when

  221. everything is pretty and you can see what you're doing

  222. during the night. This is a theme in scripture. Some

  223. of the greatest stuff God will show you will be

  224. when you can't see with your eyes and when you

  225. can't feel with your emotions and you can't understand with

  226. your mind. During the night, Paul had a vision of

  227. a man A man of Macedonia, this big region in Europe,

  228. with people who were not yet reached by the gospel.

  229. There were a lot of Jewish people in Macedonia, but

  230. not many believers yet, and certainly no church. And now

  231. I understand why God told Paul no. Because God knew

  232. the real need. The plans of a man are in

  233. his heart. But his steps are ordered by the Lord.

  234. God has a purpose and you have a plan. And

  235. sometimes he has to do away with one to get

  236. to the other. I'm preaching right to your heart today.

  237. Trying to get you to see this vision that Paul saw.

  238. It was a man of Macedonia. A what of Macedonia?

  239. A man of Macedonia standing.

  240. And begging him.

  241. Come over to Macedonia and help us.

  242. Paul was looking for an opportunity. God showed him a need.

  243. Could it be possible that you've been asking.

  244. God for an opportunity and God is showing it to

  245. you in the form of your greatest need? Would you

  246. be willing to receive that maybe the way God is

  247. speaking to you in this season is.

  248. Not by what you feel And not by what you think.

  249. And not even by what you want.

  250. When you try to figure out your life and how

  251. others should act and how it needs to be. Have

  252. you got to the place like Paul where you say,

  253. I don't know what I really need. I need you

  254. to lead me, God. Somebody say, lead me, Lord. I

  255. don't want to lean on my own understanding. I need

  256. God to lead me. I don't need to lean on

  257. what I think I need because I'll think I need

  258. one thing when I really need another. That's how I

  259. gained weight when we got married. I thought I needed

  260. an Oreo and I really needed exercise.

  261. Sometimes we think we need food.

  262. We really need a nap.

  263. Sometimes we think we need another person.

  264. What we really need to do is pray and ask

  265. God to get.

  266. Our minds right. Sometimes we think we.

  267. Need people to treat us different when what we really

  268. need is to see people Not as trees for us

  269. to pick the fruit from But for soil for us

  270. to sow in and God speaks to Paul and says you.

  271. Want an opportunity here it is.

  272. And it's in the form of a need God is

  273. trying to lead you through your need and my God

  274. I will meet all your needs.

  275. How? With a need. God is God. He meets needs

  276. with needs.

  277. He's better than Christian mingle.

  278. God is a matchmaker. He's better than farmers only and

  279. Christian farmers only and God is.

  280. In the business of meeting needs with needs. Has your

  281. joy been low lately? Has your focus been off?

  282. Maybe God is going to show you

  283. a need that you can meet so that you can

  284. see what you had all along.
