  1. Hi, and welcome to the Willow Ridge Church weekly podcast.

  2. This is where you can find audio for our current and past sermons.

  3. We hope that you enjoy this week's installment, and be sure to check back next week to hear

  4. the latest message.

  5. Thanks for listening.

  6. If you've got your Bibles, going to open up to Galatians chapter 2.

    Galatians 2 chapter mention

  7. As you turn there, right, it's good for us to consistently build in reminders of where

  8. we're at, of what we're doing, okay?

  9. So I want to thank everybody.

  10. We've had a great opportunity every Sunday morning as we started off this new year to

  11. gather together as a church family, starting at 945, to come together, to have some coffee,

  12. to have some donuts, to have some snacks, to build relationships as we continue to build

  13. our church family.

  14. And I want to challenge you, if you're a part of our family and you haven't had the opportunity

  15. to join us, right?

  16. You don't have to be here at 945, but get here early as an opportunity to continue to build

  17. relationships, to continue to invest as we continue to work toward becoming one family unified in

  18. the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  19. I also want to remind everybody, so next Sunday, it's one of those first Sundays of the month,

  20. and so what that means for us is we'll be taking the Lord's Supper together as a church family,

  21. but we will also be having our first graders all the way through the adults, all of us in

  22. here together, so that we can have a part of the whole family, but then also the church family,

  23. individual families within our church family together.

  24. And so I want to encourage you to be a part of that service with us next week as we take the

  25. Lord's Supper together, as we worship together, and as we have a wonderful time of coming together

  26. and celebrating the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  27. Well, we're going to start reading this morning, Galatians chapter 2.

    Galatians 2 chapter mention

  28. We're going to read starting in verse 11 and go through verse 21.

  29. God's Word says this,

  30. But when Cephas, and make a note that when it says this name, this is Peter,

  31. came to Antioch, Paul writes and he says,

  32. I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned.

  33. For before certain men came from James, he was eating with the Gentiles.

  34. But when they came, he drew back and separated himself, fearing the circumcision party.

  35. And the rest of the Jews acted hypocritically along with him,

  36. so that even Barnabas was led astray by their hypocrisy.

  37. But when I saw that their conduct was not in step with the truth of the gospel,

  38. I said to Cephas, again reminding you guys, this is Peter,

  39. Before them all, if you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew,

  40. how can you force the Gentiles to live like Jews?

  41. This is a key argument that we've been talking about since the beginning of studying and understanding Galatians.

  42. All right, it's how can you impose something that's not the gospel on those converting,

  43. is what Paul is saying.

  44. Verse 15, he says,

  45. We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners,

  46. yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law,

  47. but through faith in Jesus Christ.

  48. So we also have believed in Christ Jesus in order to be justified by faith in Christ,

  49. and not by works of the law.

  50. This is important, underline this in your Bible,

  51. because by the works of the law, no one will be justified.

  52. Continue on in verse 17,

  53. But if in our endeavor to be justified in Christ,

  54. we too were found to be sinners,

  55. is Christ then a servant of sin?

  56. Certainly not.

  57. For if I rebuild what I tore down,

  58. I prove myself to be a transgressor.

  59. For through the law I died to the law so that I might live to God.

  60. Verse 20,

  61. I've been crucified with Christ.

  62. It is no longer I who live,

  63. but Christ who lives in me.

  64. In the life I now live,

  65. in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God,

  66. who loved me and gave himself up for me.

  67. I do not nullify the grace of God,

  68. for if righteousness were through the law,

  69. then Christ died for no purpose.

  70. Now there's a lot in this passage of Scripture.

  71. In fact, what we're going to get this week

  72. is kind of message 1A,

  73. and then next week as we take the Lord's Supper

  74. and lead into this,

  75. we're going to wrap up this particular passage of Scripture

  76. and get the second half of what's going on.

  77. As Paul is continuing on and concluding the section

  78. as he's sharing his story of what's going on in his life.

  79. And this is the third segment that we've kind of seen in this

  80. as Paul shares.

  81. If you go all the way back to a couple weeks ago,

  82. it was the second week in our study of Galatians,

  83. we see the first section

  84. where Paul talks about his salvation,

  85. his salvation experience,

  86. and an important part for him

  87. that he focuses in on of what God does in that.

  88. That this gospel that he received

  89. was not the gospel of man.

  90. That it didn't come from one man to another,

  91. but that God revealed it to him.

  92. And it's the supernatural aspect of the gospel

  93. of what Paul is implanting,

  94. that for the Jew and for the Gentile,

  95. for every person who has ever lived,

  96. there is one gospel,

  97. and it's important that this gospel comes from God.

  98. It's the establishment of what he lays down before them.

  99. And then he jumps in scripture,

  100. tells us 14 years later in his story,

  101. and he begins to talk about the Jerusalem council.

  102. And at the Jerusalem council,

  103. it's determined,

  104. this man named Titus,

  105. that even though he is a Gentile,

  106. that he is a full believer of Christ

  107. with nothing else added to that

  108. for him required to do,

  109. that he's a full believer of Christ,

  110. even though he does not follow

  111. all of the customary Jewish laws

  112. or traditions that are there living in the culture.

  113. That now we see the establishment

  114. and the confirmation of what Paul knew

  115. as God imparted the gospel to him,

  116. as God called him to the Gentiles,

  117. that it is one unified gospel

  118. for the Jew,

  119. for the Gentile,

  120. for everyone,

  121. for every nation,

  122. for every tribe,

  123. every tongue.

  124. It's the foundation of the hope that we have

  125. that we're called to share.

  126. It's the reminder that regardless of what we look like,

  127. regardless of what we say,

  128. that there is one gospel,

  129. the gospel of Christ.

  130. And now what we're going to get

  131. is we're going to get the third part.

  132. We're going to get the third part of his story.

  133. And as we see,

  134. it's the culmination of what Paul is drawing together

  135. as he explains that it is the gospel

  136. who saved Titus.

  137. It is the gospel who would save Peter.

  138. It's the gospel who would save Paul.

  139. It's the gospel who would save you.

  140. It's the gospel who would save me.

  141. But that even after salvation,

  142. it's the gospel that keeps us.

  143. It's the gospel that's the standard.

  144. That when we are saved,

  145. it's not then we walk away

  146. and carry the gospel just to share it.

  147. But we walk away,

  148. we carry the gospel to share it,

  149. but also the gospel to live by.

  150. And we see the transforming power of the gospel.

  151. Well, here in the third section

  152. of what we read this morning

  153. is Paul addresses an issue

  154. that he had with Peter.

  155. Now before,

  156. back in the Jerusalem council,

  157. Peter was there.

  158. And he and Peter were unified

  159. concerning Titus and the gospel.

  160. But now they're no longer in Jerusalem.

  161. They're in Antioch,

  162. a largely Gentile city.

  163. And Paul stands in opposition to Peter.

  164. He rebukes him.

  165. He calls him out.

  166. He challenges him.

  167. So what in the world was going on?

  168. You see, to simplify it,

  169. Peter had changed his eating habits.

  170. Peter had changed his social status

  171. when he would eat,

  172. before he would eat with the Gentiles.

  173. But now he has stopped his eating with them

  174. and in doing so,

  175. stopped his fellowship with the Gentiles.

  176. You see, there begins to now be a break

  177. in what was fought for to be unified.

  178. Not only is the gospel unified in message,

  179. but it's always important

  180. that the gospel is also unified

  181. in its application.

  182. And Peter had walked away from that.

  183. And so Paul is addressing him.

  184. So why would he do this?

  185. Why would Peter, who knows,

  186. why would Peter,

  187. who with boldness,

  188. would proclaim who Christ is,

  189. why would Peter,

  190. one of those closest,

  191. to have walked with Christ,

  192. the leader of the core of what was there,

  193. being willing to charge

  194. a Roman centurion

  195. with a knife to set Jesus free,

  196. why would Peter,

  197. who would write scripture,

  198. why would Peter,

  199. who would be such a foundational leader

  200. in the church,

  201. why would he break away from this?

  202. Why would he head down this path?

  203. It's because of the sin

  204. that was in his life.

  205. You see, let me explain to you

  206. Old Testament,

  207. what we're going to call clean laws.

  208. The Old Testament clean laws

  209. found in Leviticus

  210. were a series of regulations

  211. for worshipers to follow.

  212. And God had put them in place

  213. for them to be ceremonial clean

  214. and acceptable

  215. in the presence of God for worship.

  216. And so a handful of them were,

  217. they were required to eat certain foods

  218. and not eat certain foods

  219. because the certain foods

  220. they were not eat

  221. were deemed to be unclean.

  222. They were not allowed

  223. to touch dead things.

  224. If someone had a disease,

  225. they were not allowed to touch them.

  226. Or if you had a disease,

  227. that you were forbidden

  228. from touching others

  229. and there were many other

  230. clean laws that are there

  231. that are found in Leviticus.

  232. And God is doing these

  233. to teach his people something.

  234. God is doing this

  235. to teach them something

  236. about themselves,

  237. but also God is doing this

  238. to teach them something

  239. about himself.

  240. And what God wanted to show

  241. with the clean laws

  242. was that a sinful people,

  243. everyone,

  244. needed to be clean

  245. in order to enter

  246. into the presence of God.

  247. It's a beautiful picture

  248. of what would take place

  249. of the work of Christ

  250. to allow you and I,

  251. sinners,

  252. to be brought into

  253. a right relationship

  254. with the Holy God.

  255. What we would see

  256. in the know

  257. of the hope of the gospel

  258. was that in order

  259. to be made clean

  260. is not found

  261. in anything that we do,

  262. but it's found

  263. in the work of Christ,

  264. of what Christ does

  265. on our behalf.

  266. And Jesus comes

  267. and he addresses

  268. the clean laws.

  269. In Mark chapter 7,

    Mark 7 chapter mention

  270. Jesus says that

  271. even with his arrival

  272. that these laws have passed.

  273. And then there's

  274. a wonderful picture

  275. in the book of Acts

  276. where God sends a vision

  277. to Peter of all people

  278. specifically to show him

  279. why this law has gone away.

  280. And then in a wonderful part

  281. where Peter understands this,

  282. he meets a Gentile

  283. named Cornelius

  284. who gets saved.

  285. And Peter says,

  286. these are Peter's words,

  287. truly I understand

  288. that God shows

  289. no partiality,

  290. but in every nation

  291. anyone who fears God

  292. is acceptable to him.

  293. See the beautiful hope

  294. of the great commission

  295. call of the gospel

  296. to take it outside

  297. of a race,

  298. to take it outside

  299. of a nationality,

  300. and to spread it

  301. to the hope

  302. of the nation.

  303. But after this,

  304. we begin to see

  305. that in spite of criticism,

  306. Peter continues

  307. to eat with Gentiles.

  308. In spite of all

  309. of these things

  310. of what could take place,

  311. Peter pushes forward.

  312. But in Antioch,

  313. it changes.

  314. In Antioch,

  315. we see a different reaction.

  316. Why?

  317. What would cause Peter,

  318. someone who understands

  319. the gospel,

  320. what would cause Peter,

  321. someone who teaches

  322. the gospel,

  323. what would cause him

  324. to break away

  325. from what he knew,

  326. to abandon

  327. the implications

  328. of the gospel

  329. on his life?

  330. You see,

  331. Peter hasn't walked away

  332. from what he knows

  333. will save him,

  334. but what he has walked away

  335. from in this moment

  336. as he refuses

  337. to eat with Gentiles

  338. is what the gospel

  339. does in his life

  340. every single day.

  341. And when I look around

  342. the room

  343. and I look in the mirror,

  344. what I know with us

  345. of what we do

  346. when we fall into

  347. patterns of sin

  348. is you and I,

  349. we do not walk away

  350. from the reality

  351. that the gospel saves us,

  352. but all too often

  353. we walk away

  354. from the application

  355. of what the gospel

  356. calls us to

  357. every single day

  358. in our life.

  359. So what would cause

  360. Peter to do this?

  361. Look back at verse 12.

  362. Paul says,

  363. for before certain men

  364. came from James,

  365. he was eating

  366. with the Gentiles.

  367. But when they came,

  368. he drew back

  369. and separated himself.

  370. Why?

  371. Because fearing

  372. the circumcision party.

  373. It was fear.

  374. Fear is what

  375. crept into him.

  376. Fear of criticism

  377. from others.

  378. Fear of judgment

  379. from others.

  380. Fear of abandonment

  381. from his culture.

  382. And what we find

  383. in the life of Peter,

  384. what we find in verse 12

  385. is so often

  386. what rings true

  387. in our life today

  388. is this,

  389. is that oftentimes

  390. fear is what

  391. pulls us away

  392. from obedience

  393. to God.

  394. We become

  395. the insecure

  396. child

  397. who's afraid

  398. of losing

  399. what's all around

  400. them

  401. as opposed

  402. to being obedient

  403. to the God

  404. who saves us.

  405. And fear

  406. creeps in.

  407. What are they

  408. going to think

  409. about me?

  410. What are they

  411. going to say

  412. about me?

  413. What are they

  414. going to exclude

  415. me from?

  416. What is going

  417. to happen

  418. to me?

  419. And fear

  420. pulls Peter.

  421. Fear pulls

  422. me.

  423. Fear pulls

  424. you

  425. away

  426. from obedience

  427. to the gospel.

  428. And so Paul

  429. addresses him.

  430. Paul's like,

  431. we're going to deal

  432. with this.

  433. And we're going

  434. to look at

  435. two ways

  436. in which Paul

  437. addresses him

  438. this morning.

  439. The first thing

  440. that Paul does

  441. is Paul reminds

  442. Peter of walking

  443. in the gospel.

  444. Look back

  445. at verse 14.

  446. He says,

  447. but when I saw

  448. that their conduct

  449. was not in step

  450. with the truth,

  451. underline that

  452. in your Bible,

  453. was not in step

  454. with the truth

  455. of the gospel,

  456. I said to Cephas

  457. before them all,

  458. if you,

  459. though a Jew,

  460. live like a Gentile

  461. and not a Jew,

  462. how can you force

  463. the Gentiles

  464. to live like Jews?

  465. Here's Paul's issue

  466. with Peter.

  467. It's not that he's

  468. not being a good host.

  469. It's not that he's

  470. breaking protocol.

  471. It's that Peter's

  472. actions and life

  473. are not reflective

  474. of the truth

  475. of the gospel.

  476. Because for the message

  477. of the gospel

  478. to be made known,

  479. it is fully in

  480. what we say

  481. and what we do.

  482. You see,

  483. we can't separate

  484. our actions

  485. from our message,

  486. from our words.

  487. It is all tied

  488. into this.

  489. And so Paul's like,

  490. Peter,

  491. you can't proclaim

  492. this with your mouth

  493. or write this

  494. with your pen

  495. but yet live

  496. different from what

  497. the gospel implies

  498. for your life.

  499. And so in the separation,

  500. in the removal,

  501. I have to address this.

  502. By Peter doing

  503. what he is doing,

  504. it actually says

  505. the opposite

  506. of the gospel.

  507. And what Peter

  508. is doing

  509. is he is no longer

  510. walking in the gospel.

  511. He's no longer

  512. walking in what

  513. saves him

  514. but he is walking

  515. in the world.

  516. He's walking

  517. in the culture.

  518. He's walking

  519. in the standard

  520. that others

  521. have set for him

  522. and not the standard

  523. by which God

  524. has set

  525. before him.

  526. Let me ask you this

  527. this morning, church.

  528. How do you walk?

  529. How do you walk?

  530. In every aspect

  531. of your life,

  532. how do you walk?

  533. He addresses Peter.

  534. He calls him

  535. a hypocrite.

  536. And let me tell you,

  537. let me explain

  538. one of the criticisms

  539. from the outside

  540. of the church

  541. is that gathered here

  542. in this place

  543. and in every church

  544. that the church

  545. is filled

  546. with a bunch

  547. of hypocrites.

  548. And let me say,

  549. as the world

  550. looks at us,

  551. they're right.

  552. They're right.

  553. If we examine

  554. the way that we walk

  555. and we're not

  556. walking in line

  557. with the gospel,

  558. they are right.

  559. You see,

  560. hypocrisy comes

  561. when you intentionally

  562. walk some

  563. with the gospel

  564. and some

  565. in the world.

  566. Let me ask you this.

  567. As a church member,

  568. as a Christian,

  569. do we walk

  570. in the gospel

  571. in the areas

  572. that we select?

  573. So when I step here

  574. in this place,

  575. I want to walk

  576. in line

  577. with the gospel

  578. and the things

  579. that I say

  580. and the things

  581. that I do

  582. and how I live

  583. and how I interact

  584. and how I greet

  585. that in this place

  586. I walk in line

  587. with the gospel

  588. that when I interact

  589. with my wife,

  590. when I interact

  591. with my family,

  592. when I interact

  593. with them,

  594. I want to walk

  595. in line

  596. with the gospel.

  597. Does it mean for us

  598. that when we walk

  599. with our children

  600. and we want to mold

  601. and shape

  602. and develop them

  603. that we want

  604. to walk in line

  605. with the gospel?

  606. Can I tell you

  607. in those three things,

  608. if you want to walk

  609. in line

  610. with the gospel,

  611. praise God.

  612. But if we walk

  613. out of here

  614. and we don't want

  615. to walk in line

  616. with the gospel

  617. as a coach,

  618. if we don't want

  619. to walk in line

  620. with the gospel

  621. on social media,

  622. if we don't want

  623. to walk in line

  624. with the gospel

  625. at work

  626. or in our cul-de-sac,

  627. if we don't want

  628. to walk in line

  629. with the gospel

  630. in our hunt club,

  631. if we don't want

  632. to walk in line

  633. with the gospel

  634. in the social settings

  635. with our friends

  636. who maybe many of them,

  637. and let me tell you this,

  638. I hope most of your friends

  639. are not believers

  640. because God's planted you there

  641. to be a missionary

  642. for them.

  643. If we're not walking

  644. in line with the gospel

  645. in those settings,

  646. then we are a hypocrite.

  647. What is good

  648. for your house

  649. and what is good

  650. for here

  651. is not what's good

  652. for you there.

  653. But we must walk

  654. in line.

  655. We can't have a foot

  656. in both worlds.

  657. I started taking my kids

  658. hunting with me

  659. at a really early age.

  660. Probably too early.

  661. I think Grayson was three

  662. the first time

  663. he went with me.

  664. There was not a deer

  665. within five square miles

  666. of us

  667. that did not hear him

  668. in that deer stand.

  669. And I'll never forget,

  670. I got a picture of it

  671. that Aaron took of us

  672. in our kitchen

  673. that afternoon

  674. as we were going

  675. to go hunting

  676. and I'm bent down

  677. and he's there

  678. probably like 35 pounds

  679. and he's ready to go

  680. and he's got his toy gun

  681. on his shoulder.

  682. And we head out there

  683. and of course we didn't.

  684. We didn't see a deer.

  685. And we get ready

  686. to walk back

  687. and I pull up my phone

  688. because that's where

  689. my flashlight's on.

  690. And as I turn

  691. on my flashlight,

  692. it's pitch black dark,

  693. we hunt on a piece

  694. of property

  695. called Gum Swamp.

  696. There's alligators.

  697. There's rattlesnakes.

  698. There's water moccasins.

  699. There's wild hogs.

  700. I go to walk

  701. out of there

  702. and I go to turn

  703. on my flashlight

  704. and my flashlight dies.

  705. And now I've got

  706. a whole bunch of stuff

  707. because you got to take

  708. a three-year-old

  709. a lot of things

  710. to stay engaged, right?

  711. So I've got like

  712. two bags,

  713. I've got my rifle

  714. and I've got my son.

  715. And I look at him

  716. and I said,

  717. buddy,

  718. we're going to walk

  719. back to the truck.

  720. We got to walk

  721. past the swamp.

  722. There's some stuff there.

  723. Here's what I need

  724. you to do.

  725. For you to be safe

  726. where I walk,

  727. you walk.

  728. Don't go to the side

  729. of me.

  730. Don't try to get

  731. around me.

  732. But where I place

  733. my feet,

  734. you place your feet.

  735. And we'll work

  736. our way.

  737. And even though

  738. we,

  739. even though you and I

  740. can't see what lies

  741. ahead of us,

  742. I will make

  743. a path for us

  744. and the path

  745. will be safe

  746. for you

  747. as long as you

  748. stay

  749. on the path.

  750. And he looked at me

  751. and said,

  752. okay,

  753. he asked if he could

  754. hold my hand.

  755. And I said,

  756. absolutely.

  757. And so for about

  758. 500 yards

  759. through the woods,

  760. I walked like this

  761. as my three-year-old son

  762. walked behind me,

  763. putting his foot

  764. in my footprints.

  765. Church,

  766. God set a path

  767. for us.

  768. And he says

  769. if we're going to walk

  770. in the gospel,

  771. it's not one foot

  772. on his path

  773. and one foot

  774. on our path.

  775. It's not that

  776. at home

  777. this is how I walk,

  778. but when I'm out

  779. at work,

  780. when I'm over

  781. with my friends,

  782. when I'm doing

  783. all the things

  784. that I want to do,

  785. then I choose

  786. my own path.

  787. That's not

  788. gospel living.

  789. And it's not

  790. who he has

  791. called us

  792. to be.

  793. It's not

  794. what he has put

  795. within our hearts

  796. to do.

  797. It's not the

  798. transformation

  799. that's there.

  800. You see,

  801. here's the truth

  802. about the path

  803. of the gospel.

  804. Here's the part

  805. that my story

  806. doesn't tell.

  807. Sometimes the path

  808. is still hard.

  809. Sometimes there

  810. will still be things

  811. to try to lead us

  812. off of the path.

  813. Sometimes our culture,

  814. sometimes our friends,

  815. sometimes those

  816. we trust the most,

  817. sometimes even others

  818. that are gathered

  819. in here

  820. will try to pull us off.

  821. But it's why

  822. it's so important

  823. that the people

  824. in this room

  825. are not our standards.

  826. It's why it's important

  827. that the rules

  828. of our culture

  829. are not what sets

  830. our path.

  831. But it's why

  832. it's important

  833. that an understanding

  834. and an application

  835. of God's word

  836. is what's laid

  837. down before us.

  838. So God set

  839. our path.

  840. Make it clear.

  841. And as the gospel

  842. transforms us,

  843. we keep going on.

  844. So Paul reminds him

  845. of the path.

  846. But Paul also

  847. addresses for Peter

  848. what I'm going to refer to

  849. as hidden sin.

  850. Hidden sin.

  851. Acceptable sin.

  852. It's okay sin.

  853. Sin that as he does it,

  854. the culture that's around

  855. embraces it

  856. and says,

  857. that's fine.

  858. That's who we are.

  859. That's fine.

  860. That's what we do.

  861. That's fine.

  862. That's the way

  863. things are done

  864. around here.

  865. You see,

  866. what Peter is struggling

  867. with in this moment,

  868. it is the sin

  869. that has been

  870. accepted in his culture.

  871. It's the,

  872. Peter is struggling

  873. with the way

  874. that he was raised.

  875. Peter is struggling

  876. with the things

  877. that have been imparted

  878. to him,

  879. the things that have

  880. been taught to him.

  881. He's struggling

  882. with a layer

  883. of nationalistic pride.

  884. He's struggling

  885. with a layer

  886. of racism.

  887. He's struggling

  888. with a layer

  889. of elitism.

  890. He's struggling

  891. with being able

  892. to implement

  893. the gospel

  894. in every aspect

  895. of his life

  896. because of fear.

  897. And what we see

  898. is the hidden sin

  899. that begins

  900. to come out.

  901. You see,

  902. Peter struggles

  903. that when he walks

  904. in the room,

  905. that when he's there,

  906. what's socially

  907. required of him,

  908. what's culturally

  909. required of him

  910. is to think

  911. Jew

  912. over Gentile.

  913. But he knows

  914. the difference.

  915. But he chooses

  916. not what he knows

  917. from the gospel,

  918. but Peter

  919. chooses what he knows

  920. from culture.

  921. He chooses

  922. what he's comfortable

  923. with.

  924. He chooses

  925. what he feels

  926. is best.

  927. What he chooses

  928. is his people.

  929. What he chooses

  930. is his race.

  931. What he chooses

  932. is his nation,

  933. not the gospel.

  934. And it's the gospel

  935. over all things.

  936. I want you to think

  937. about a time

  938. in your life

  939. when you've walked

  940. into a setting

  941. that culturally

  942. was difficult

  943. for you.

  944. Maybe it took place

  945. in another country.

  946. Maybe it took place

  947. from a co-worker

  948. who's maybe

  949. from a different country

  950. and they invite you

  951. over for a meal

  952. and you walk in

  953. and cultures

  954. are different.

  955. Maybe it happened

  956. in a friendship

  957. or a relationship

  958. of a neighbor

  959. that you have.

  960. I want you to think

  961. of a point in time

  962. and a moment

  963. for you

  964. where you felt

  965. awkward culturally.

  966. You felt

  967. uncomfortable

  968. culturally

  969. because you

  970. were different

  971. than everyone else

  972. who surrounded you.

  973. Now,

  974. think about

  975. Jesus.

  976. Jesus was always

  977. different

  978. than every person

  979. that he ever met.

  980. Every man,

  981. woman,

  982. and child

  983. that Jesus

  984. ever encountered,

  985. he was different then.

  986. He was different

  987. from his neighbors.

  988. He was different

  989. from his mom.

  990. He was different

  991. from his siblings.

  992. What made him

  993. different?

  994. The lack

  995. of sin

  996. and the presence

  997. of holiness

  998. in his life.

  999. And in spite

  1000. of fear,

  1001. in spite

  1002. of criticism,

  1003. in spite

  1004. of persecution,

  1005. when Jesus

  1006. walked into

  1007. a room

  1008. where he was

  1009. different than

  1010. everyone who was

  1011. there,

  1012. what rang

  1013. true

  1014. was the gospel

  1015. in spite

  1016. of what

  1017. awaited him?

  1018. He went

  1019. to the home

  1020. of Zacchaeus,

  1021. a betrayer,

  1022. a tax

  1023. collector,

  1024. a thief,

  1025. and he had

  1026. dinner with him.

  1027. He sat

  1028. there

  1029. in the midst

  1030. of those

  1031. that would

  1032. surround him

  1033. in their

  1034. self-proclaimed

  1035. righteousness

  1036. and let what

  1037. the Bible

  1038. describes

  1039. as a sinful

  1040. woman

  1041. wash his

  1042. feet

  1043. with her hair.

  1044. He's walking

  1045. down the road

  1046. with a group

  1047. of people

  1048. who were

  1049. surrounding him

  1050. and out of

  1051. his corner

  1052. of his eye

  1053. he sees

  1054. Matthew,

  1055. a tax

  1056. collector,

  1057. another crook,

  1058. another thief,

  1059. someone that

  1060. culture said

  1061. was lower

  1062. than a dog

  1063. and he said,

  1064. hey man,

  1065. come follow

  1066. me.

  1067. Not only

  1068. follow me

  1069. but be my

  1070. closest friend,

  1071. be my

  1072. closest ally,

  1073. be my

  1074. disciple.

  1075. He sat

  1076. there

  1077. during the

  1078. middle of

  1079. the day

  1080. when it

  1081. was hot

  1082. outside.

  1083. He sat

  1084. there at

  1085. a well

  1086. with a

  1087. woman of

  1088. a different

  1089. race,

  1090. with a

  1091. woman of

  1092. questionable

  1093. moral standing

  1094. and said,

  1095. hey,

  1096. can you

  1097. give me

  1098. some water?

  1099. I'm thirsty.

  1100. And she

  1101. says,

  1102. why would

  1103. you talk

  1104. to me?

  1105. Because he's

  1106. the savior

  1107. of the

  1108. world.

  1109. The gospel

  1110. is him

  1111. and he

  1112. shared with

  1113. her the

  1114. hope that

  1115. he had.

  1116. You see,

  1117. Paul addresses

  1118. the hidden

  1119. sin in the

  1120. life of

  1121. Peter.

  1122. And Jesus

  1123. taught and

  1124. Jesus showed

  1125. what it

  1126. meant to

  1127. look past

  1128. nationalistic

  1129. pride,

  1130. to look

  1131. past

  1132. race,

  1133. to look

  1134. past

  1135. social

  1136. standing,

  1137. to look

  1138. past

  1139. the sinful

  1140. living of

  1141. others

  1142. and a

  1143. desire

  1144. to love

  1145. others

  1146. and a

  1147. hope

  1148. to bring

  1149. the gospel

  1150. to them.

  1151. And so

  1152. Paul says

  1153. to Peter,

  1154. when you

  1155. walk in

  1156. the room

  1157. and you

  1158. create the

  1159. divide,

  1160. when you

  1161. walk in

  1162. the room

  1163. and you

  1164. and your

  1165. sin

  1166. chooses

  1167. who's

  1168. better,

  1169. when you

  1170. walk in

  1171. that,

  1172. the gospel

  1173. that has

  1174. saved you

  1175. is not

  1176. the gospel

  1177. that you're

  1178. displaying.

  1179. I'm just

  1180. going to ask

  1181. you guys

  1182. this.

  1183. What path

  1184. are you

  1185. walking on

  1186. this morning?

  1187. What path

  1188. are you

  1189. walking on?

  1190. Is your

  1191. life,

  1192. as Paul

  1193. says,

  1194. in step

  1195. with the

  1196. gospel,

  1197. flowing to

  1198. the rhythm

  1199. of what God

  1200. has called

  1201. you to?

  1202. To the

  1203. hope of

  1204. what has

  1205. saved you?

  1206. To the

  1207. hope of

  1208. what's

  1209. transforming

  1210. you?

  1211. Or are

  1212. you on

  1213. another path

  1214. altogether,

  1215. walking on

  1216. the path

  1217. of the

  1218. world,

  1219. figuring it

  1220. out yourself,

  1221. trying to

  1222. understand how

  1223. to make

  1224. your own

  1225. self

  1226. righteous?

  1227. Or are

  1228. you like

  1229. so many

  1230. of us,

  1231. living your

  1232. life as

  1233. a hypocrite?

  1234. Sometimes I'm

  1235. on this

  1236. path,

  1237. sometimes I'm

  1238. on the

  1239. other.

  1240. It all

  1241. depends on

  1242. who I

  1243. want to

  1244. be.

  1245. Would you

  1246. pray with

  1247. me?

  1248. God, we

  1249. come to you

  1250. this morning.

  1251. Lord, and I

  1252. just ask you,

  1253. Lord, through

  1254. the power of

  1255. your spirit,

  1256. through the

  1257. conviction of

  1258. who you are,

  1259. Lord, to lay

  1260. out before us

  1261. our path.

  1262. Lord, as you

  1263. gave Peter a

  1264. vision in

  1265. Acts, Lord, I

  1266. pray that your

  1267. Holy Spirit would

  1268. speak to our

  1269. hearts.

  1270. Show to us as

  1271. individuals,

  1272. Lord, what

  1273. path we are

  1274. on.

  1275. Lord, show us

  1276. what we

  1277. choose.

  1278. Lord, for

  1279. those of us

  1280. who proclaim

  1281. that it's the

  1282. gospel of

  1283. Christ and

  1284. Christ alone

  1285. that has

  1286. saved us.

  1287. Lord, show us

  1288. where we have

  1289. wandered off of

  1290. the path.

  1291. Lord, show us

  1292. and how your

  1293. grace can

  1294. show us

  1295. as only you

  1296. can, where we

  1297. have embraced

  1298. hypocrisy, where

  1299. we are not who

  1300. we have claimed

  1301. to be, where

  1302. we are not

  1303. walking in the

  1304. boldness of

  1305. faith.

  1306. Lord, and I

  1307. pray for those

  1308. of us who

  1309. were there

  1310. that this

  1311. morning, through

  1312. the grace of

  1313. your heart,

  1314. through the

  1315. kindness of

  1316. your spirit,

  1317. Lord, that you

  1318. would bring us

  1319. to the sweet

  1320. spot of

  1321. repentance.

  1322. Lord, if it's

  1323. a, if it's

  1324. like Peter, if

  1325. it's a heart

  1326. of racism, or

  1327. to help us

  1328. understand that

  1329. you heal all

  1330. things, that

  1331. you restore all

  1332. things, and that

  1333. we will no longer

  1334. see people as

  1335. defined by their

  1336. culture, as

  1337. defined by their

  1338. skin color, as

  1339. defined by their

  1340. language, or

  1341. but that we

  1342. would see them as

  1343. individuals created

  1344. by God, who

  1345. either need the

  1346. gospel, or who

  1347. are already

  1348. fellow brothers

  1349. and sisters of

  1350. the gospel.

  1351. Lord, change the

  1352. way we see.

  1353. Lord, heal us.

  1354. Bring us back.

  1355. Lord, maybe we're

  1356. wandering off

  1357. another path because

  1358. of fear.

  1359. Fear that if I'm

1360. not this way, then I

  1361. won't be accepted.

1362. If I'm not this way,

  1363. then I won't have

  1364. my job.

1365. If I'm not this way,

  1366. then I won't be

  1367. useful.

1368. If I'm not this way,

  1369. then the world will

  1370. no longer need me.

  1371. Lord, set us free

  1372. from that.

  1373. Lord, bring in line

  1374. in every aspect of

  1375. our life.

  1376. May our walk at

  1377. church, may our walk

  1378. with our spouse, may

  1379. our walk with our

  1380. kids, may our walk

  1381. with our friends, may

  1382. our walk with our

  1383. coworkers, may our walk

  1384. with our neighbors, may

  1385. our walk by

  1386. ourselves be on the

  1387. path of the gospel

  1388. and step with who

  1389. you are.

  1390. Lord, and for those

1391. of us in this room,

  1392. we're completely on

  1393. another path.

  1394. Lord, bring us back

  1395. to the very important

  1396. thing that we began

  1397. with, that it's Christ

  1398. in Christ alone.

  1399. With every head

  1400. bowed and every eye

  1401. closed, whatever

  1402. brought you here,

  1403. whatever sin or

  1404. failure that you may

  1405. feel that you have,

  1406. whatever pursuit

  1407. you've been on,

  1408. there's one road.

  1409. It's the road that

  1410. leads to Jesus.

1411. We'd like to talk to

  1412. you this morning about

  1413. a relationship with

  1414. Him.

  1415. We'd love to show

  1416. you what a relationship

  1417. with Him looks like

1418. so that you may walk

1419. out of here on a

  1420. path of the gospel.

  1421. Jesus, do what you're

1422. going to do, or draw

1423. our hearts to you, and

  1424. we'll praise you for

  1425. it.

1426. And it's in Jesus' name

  1427. we pray.

  1428. Amen.

  1429. Just a moment, we're

  1430. going to stand and

  1431. we're going to respond.

  1432. We've got prayer

  1433. encouragers on either

  1434. side of the auditorium.

  1435. Pastor Dave is back

  1436. here at the tables.

  1437. I will be down

  1438. front.

1439. If you'd like to talk

  1440. to someone about a

  1441. relationship with the

  1442. Lord, if you'd like

1443. to talk to someone about

  1444. a struggle that you're

  1445. going through, we'd

1446. love to talk with you,

1447. we'd love to pray with

  1448. you, but please don't

  1449. respond to us.

1450. Respond to God and how

  1451. He's leading you this

  1452. morning.

1453. Would you stand as we

  1454. worship Him?

  1455. thanks again for listening

  1456. to the Willow Ridge

  1457. Church weekly podcast.

1458. We hope that you enjoyed
