  4. the latest message.

  5. Thanks for listening.

  6. There we go.

  7. Good morning.

  8. There we go.

  9. Glad you guys are with us.

  10. If you're online with us, thank you for joining in as well.

  11. It's good to be here.

  12. Good to be gathered in God's family together.

  13. And so let's go ahead and dive on in.

  14. If you've got your Bible, it's going to open up to Matthew chapter 25.

    Matthew 25 chapter mention

  15. And this morning, we're going to look at the parable of the sheep and the goats.

  16. Now, as you're turning there, I think there's some significance to the placement of the teaching

  17. and where Matthew puts this parable in.

  18. So this parable is one of the last teachings of Jesus as he enters into the Passover scene

  19. with his disciples.

  20. So some biblical history of what's going on.

  21. This is right before Jesus would teach on the Last Supper.

  22. This is right before Jesus would be betrayed.

  23. It's right before he would be arrested, beaten, and then crucified.

  24. And so this is the very last words of Christ before all of these other events begin to unfold

  25. where he will do some more teaching.

  26. But this kind of ends a segment of ministry for him.

  27. And I think it's very important for us to look at and see what exactly is Jesus talking about.

  28. As we read it, this parable unfolds a little bit differently than other parables.

  29. In fact, some people say that this isn't even a parable.

  30. It's just a teaching of Jesus.

  31. But there are some aspects of it that make it a parable.

  32. So kind of what am I talking about?

  33. So as Jesus begins to teach, he speaks in the reality of referring to himself as the Son of Man.

  34. Which in all the other parables that we've studied,

  35. Jesus begins at the very beginning with establishing who he is as a character within the parable.

  36. But then he's going to switch over and he's going to refer to both the shepherd and the king.

  37. And so when you see in here, Jesus is the Son of Man, Jesus is the shepherd, Jesus is the king,

  38. as it all goes forward and as he tells the parable.

  39. So let's start reading Matthew chapter 25 verse 31.

    Matthew 25:31

  40. Jesus says,

  41. When the Son of Man comes in his glory and all the angels with him,

  42. then he will sit on his glorious throne.

  43. Before him will be gathered all the nations,

  44. and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.

  45. And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left.

  46. Then the king will say to those on his right,

  47. Come you who are blessed by my Father,

  48. inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.

  49. For I was hungry and you gave me food.

  50. I was thirsty and you gave me drink.

  51. I was a stranger and you welcomed me.

  52. I was naked and you clothed me.

  53. I was sick and you visited me.

  54. I was in prison and you came to me.

  55. Then the righteous will answer him saying,

  56. Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you or thirsty and give you drink?

  57. When did we see you a stranger and welcome you or naked and clothe you?

  58. And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?

  59. And the king will answer them,

  60. Truly I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers,

  61. you did it to me.

  62. Then he will say to those on his left,

  63. Depart from me, you cursed and to the eternal fire,

  64. prepared for the devil and his angels.

  65. For I was hungry and you gave me no food.

  66. I was thirsty and you gave me no drink.

  67. I was a stranger and you did not welcome me.

  68. Naked and you did not clothe me.

  69. Sick and in prison and you did not visit me.

  70. Then they also will answer saying,

  71. Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison

  72. and did not minister to you?

  73. Then he will answer them saying,

  74. Truly I say to you, as you did not do to one of the least of these,

  75. you did not do it to me.

  76. And these will go away into eternal punishment,

  77. but the righteous into eternal life.

  78. And so Jesus, as he begins this next stage of ministry,

  79. not only for him, but for his followers,

  80. is continuing to lay the groundwork of communicating some hard truth for them

  81. as they're going to continue on in ministry without him.

  82. And what I mean by without him is without his physical presence there.

  83. So Jesus is about to go to the cross and die.

  84. And they're going to have that stretch of three day period where they're without him.

  85. But then also into the ascension where Jesus will go and promise of the Holy Spirit

  86. and still be with his followers in spirit, but not be with them physically.

  87. And so again, it's this important message of the gospel.

  88. It's the important part of what I'm entrusting you with.

  89. And Jesus paints a picture that would be very common of the separating of the sheep and the goats

  90. to the group of disciples that are gathered there with him.

  91. And so what I want us to look at within here is there's some harsh realities of truths

  92. that you and I, as we call ourselves believers,

  93. that we have to embrace within the gospel teaching of what the gospel calls us to.

  94. And then maybe even more important, what we reflect of the gospel.

  95. You know, there's a phrase that's used commonly and it's applied to this passage of scripture

  96. that we need to be the hands and feet of Jesus.

  97. And I want to say, I agree with that, but I believe that it's a partial truth

  98. and not the full truth of what we're called to be.

  99. That what we're called to be is the hands, the feet, and the mouth of Jesus.

  100. That what we carry with us, what we proclaim, and what we do

  101. should all fully embrace the gospel.

  102. And it's what we see come forward out of this passage of scripture.

  103. So let's understand the gospel and then how that impacts us

  104. and what that causes in our life.

  105. So the first truth I think we want to look at,

  106. which is going to provide the umbrella of which this message falls under,

  107. is this, that the gospel both unites and separates.

  108. The gospel both unites and separates.

  109. One of the common things that a lot of believers are talking about,

  110. especially in the culture and the climate in which we currently live,

  111. is the unity of believers and the unity of the gospel.

  112. And that's true.

  113. The gospel does provide unity.

  114. But the full truth of the work of what the gospel does

  115. is the gospel both unites and the gospel separates.

  116. And it's what we see from the very beginning in verse 32.

  117. Jesus says,

  118. So let's look at this.

  119. What does it mean that the gospel both equally unites and equally separates?

  120. First part, the gospel unites.

  121. Jesus' words.

  122. Before him will be gathered all the nations.

  123. You see, there's a global work of God that's been going on since the very beginning

  124. that we as believers have to come and wrestle with and understand

  125. and work toward applying in our life.

  126. And Jesus doesn't back down from it.

  127. In his teachings, even before they knew of the faith that would go

  128. and that would spread all across the world,

  129. and Jesus establishes right here.

  130. There's a beautiful work of the gospel that unites.

  131. Before him will be gathered all the nations.

  132. In Revelation chapter 7, in John's account of the throne room,

    Revelation 7 chapter mention

  133. as he begins to describe what that looks like,

  134. he's very specific.

  135. Where he says,

  136. Gathered before the king is every tribe, every nation, and every tongue.

  137. Jesus in Matthew 28, when he gives us the great commission, right?

  138. The call of all believers to go and to make disciples.

  139. He says that we're not just to make disciples here.

  140. We're not just to make disciples over there.

  141. We're not just to make disciples in our community,

  142. but that the work of the church is continually working and moving

  143. so that we make disciples of all nations.

  144. And the word used there for nations is the word ethnic,

  145. to imply the ethnic groups.

  146. So you and I, when we begin to understand that the gospel is global,

  147. that the gospel unites every tribe, every nation, every tongue,

  148. we begin to understand the bigness of the call of the gospel.

  149. See, we even look at one country in our world right now,

  150. the country of India.

  151. There are over 2,700 ethnic groups alone found in India.

  152. And so God in the great commission,

  153. Jesus here doesn't say, just take the gospel to India.

  154. Jesus says, take the gospel to 2,700 different ethnic groups in India

  155. and the application of the gospel.

  156. Because God's heart, God's desire, God's plan is the gathering of all.

  157. And so we begin to look at this great, big, global work of what God is doing.

  158. And this morning, I was able to pull up the statistics and look at it.

  159. That within the 100 largest unreached people groups,

  160. the 100 largest unreached ethnic groups,

  161. there's 1.9 billion people, 25% of the world's population.

  162. It's a church we've got work to do.

  163. When standing before God, of what, how the gospel unites,

  164. about how the gospel brings in,

  165. about how the gospel has always been intended to be taken to people

  166. who don't look like us,

  167. who don't speak the same language that we do,

  168. that have different cultures than what we have,

  169. have different skin color than what we have,

  170. look differently, act differently, respond differently.

  171. But the gospel goes to them.

  172. What we see when we look at scripture

  173. is that the gospel sees and celebrates diversity.

  174. And it is the power of God displayed in that

  175. that unites.

  176. The world always wants to take people

  177. and divide them into their spot.

  178. Put them in their box.

  179. Give them their area.

  180. Divide them into their space.

  181. And the work of God and the power of only the gospel

  182. says, no, no, no, no, no.

  183. That's not what we do.

  184. We take all of those people who are different.

  185. We take all of those people

  186. who should be at conflict.

  187. And what the gospel does

  188. is brings them together

  189. and turns them into family.

  190. It turns them into a people.

  191. God's people.

  192. So that where there once were peoples,

  193. there's now a people before one king.

  194. Jesus.

  195. And so the gospel unites.

  196. But another thing is the gospel separates.

  197. And Jesus tells us that he will separate people

  198. one from another

  199. as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.

  200. Now let's talk a little bit about being a shepherd.

  201. Kind of a lost job profession in our world.

  202. But being a shepherd was a hard job.

  203. Being a shepherd was a dirty job.

  204. In fact, if you were a shepherd,

  205. that job was typically done from a distance.

  206. And you would have to take your flock away from town

  207. for a couple reasons.

  208. Number one, they smelled bad.

  209. I don't know if you've ever been around

  210. massive groups of animals,

  211. but they typically don't smell too good.

  212. Right?

  213. So the shepherds would go out from the town

  214. to the pastures in which their flocks would graze.

  215. But then also they had to go outside of the town

  216. to get the water and what they would need.

  217. And so here's why this is important.

  218. Shepherds, when we think of shepherds,

  219. at least when I do in the context in which I grew up,

  220. I picture a shepherd with a big flock of sheep around them.

  221. Right?

  222. If we think back to our old Sunday school classes

  223. and the pictures,

  224. we think about the Christmas narrative

  225. that's told to us and what we picture

  226. and what we think of.

  227. But the truth is most shepherds

  228. during the time of Jesus' day,

  229. it wouldn't just be sheeps.

  230. In fact, most of the time it would be sheep and goats

  231. would all be a part of the flock together.

  232. So as the shepherd would move and navigate,

  233. he has some sheep,

  234. he has some goats,

  235. and the job of the shepherd was to keep them separate

  236. because of what they needed

  237. and how they responded to each other.

  238. But when most people would look out

  239. and look across and look down into the pasture

  240. and see from a distance,

  241. do you know what people couldn't do?

  242. They couldn't tell the difference

  243. between sheep and goats.

  244. Only the shepherd could.

  245. And I think it's an interesting part

  246. for us to be able to understand,

  247. we begin to understand that the gospel separates.

  248. That Jesus says there is this great unity,

  249. but there's going to also be a separation

  250. that is placed in between.

  251. And who separates?

  252. Not the townspeople looking off,

  253. not the people who are out on the side,

  254. but the shepherd himself separates.

  255. And so we begin to understand

  256. in this separation that exists

  257. that Jesus is both the means

  258. and the standard of the separation.

  259. That's why John chapter 14, verse 6,

    John 14:6

  260. Jesus speaking of himself,

  261. says,

  262. I, I am the way,

  263. I am the truth,

  264. I am the life,

  265. that it all comes from who?

  266. Jesus.

  267. Not just his teaching,

  268. not the things that he does,

  269. but that all of them found within him

  270. that Jesus is the way,

  271. Jesus is the truth,

  272. Jesus is the life,

  273. and in that the gospel separates.

  274. There's an eternal weight

  275. that is placed within this passage of scripture.

  276. This isn't a hypothetical situation

  277. that Jesus is laying out,

  278. but it's a situation

  279. that rings true for scripture

  280. and that every single one of us will face.

  281. As we heard the two little kids

  282. on the end of the video, right,

  283. begin to argue,

  284. I am the sheep,

  285. I am the sheep,

  286. I am the sheep,

  287. I am the sheep.

  288. The reality is,

  289. within our world,

  290. within our life,

  291. there's only two choices.

  292. You're either a sheep,

  293. or you're a goat.

  294. And that's determined

  295. by the king.

  296. It's determined

  297. by the gospel.

  298. So the gospel unites,

  299. but the gospel also separates.

  300. So how do we respond in this

  301. as we read the situation

  302. that unfolds

  303. as Jesus shares

  304. with his disciples?

  305. And for us,

  306. I think what we have to come to

  307. is seeing others

  308. in light of the gospel.

  309. Seeing others

  310. in light of the gospel.

  311. So as we begin to see this story

  312. of what is happening,

  313. the separation happens.

  314. And Jesus says

  315. that the sheep

  316. will be on the right

  317. and the goats

  318. will be on the left.

  319. And what the sheep

  320. will enter into

  321. is the sheep

  322. will enter into

  323. an inheritance.

  324. The sheep

  325. will enter into the kingdom.

  326. The sheep

  327. will enter in

  328. before their heavenly king.

  329. But the goats,

  330. the goats

  331. will enter into punishment.

  332. Same situation,

  333. two different destinations.

  334. And so Jesus begins

  335. to speak

  336. of why one

  337. heads in one direction

  338. and the other

  339. heads in the other direction.

  340. And this continues

  341. to build on the narrative

  342. that we've been seeing

  343. in parables.

  344. Jesus speaks

  345. to their fruit.

  346. Jesus speaks

  347. to what is seen.

  348. Jesus speaks

  349. as to who they are.

  350. And so Jesus

  351. looks at the sheep

  352. and he says,

  353. look,

  354. when I was hungry,

  355. you fed me.

  356. When I was thirsty,

  357. you gave me something

  358. to drink.

  359. When I was a stranger,

  360. you welcomed me in.

  361. When I was naked,

  362. you cared for me.

  363. When I was sick,

  364. you visited me.

  365. When I was in prison,

  366. you came to me.

  367. So as the sheep

  368. are going in,

  369. they're excited

  370. to enter into the kingdom.

  371. And from back behind them,

  372. they can hear

  373. the shepherd begin

  374. to say

  375. why they're headed in.

  376. And then an amazing

  377. thing happens.

  378. They're surprised.

  379. I think this is the part

  380. that we miss

  381. all too often

  382. in scripture.

  383. They're surprised

  384. that they're entering in

  385. and for the reason

  386. of why the shepherd

  387. says they're going

  388. into the kingdom.

  389. And I think this speaks

  390. to the great humility

  391. of the redeemed life.

  392. It's not as they entered in

  393. and as what's being spoken

  394. about them

  395. as they begin

  396. to nod their heads

  397. and say,

  398. that's right,

  399. look at all of the things

  400. that I've done.

  401. But it's that

  402. in the humility

  403. of them,

  404. they're even surprised

  405. of the work

  406. that God has done

  407. in them.

  408. And the posturing

  409. and the positioning

  410. of their heart.

  411. And so they ask

  412. a profound question.

  413. When did we do this?

  414. Jesus, tell us,

  415. when did this happen?

  416. When did we see you

  417. this way?

  418. When did we know

  419. that this is who you were?

  420. And Jesus,

  421. very simply,

  422. Jesus in his kindness

  423. and his compassion,

  424. says,

  425. as you did

  426. for the least

  427. of these,

  428. my brothers,

  429. you did also

  430. for me.

  431. But then there's

  432. the goats.

  433. And as they begin

  434. to enter in,

  435. Jesus begins

  436. to speak

  437. of their lack

  438. of fruit,

  439. of what they

  440. didn't do.

  441. Continuing to build

  442. on that this

  443. is who you are,

  444. that this is the

  445. transformation

  446. that takes place

  447. in your life.

  448. And Jesus says,

  449. I was hungry.

  450. You didn't feed me.

  451. I was thirsty.

  452. You gave me

  453. nothing to drink.

  454. I was a stranger.

  455. I was naked.

  456. I was sick.

  457. I was in prison.

  458. And you not one time

  459. cared for me.

  460. And their response

  461. was,

  462. but Jesus,

  463. if we would have

  464. known it was you,

  465. it would have been

  466. completely different.

  467. And you see

  468. the motivation

  469. of the fruit

  470. of their heart.

  471. It's not about

  472. what's been done

  473. to them

  474. that overflows

  475. on how they

  476. treat others.

  477. You see,

  478. the core of the heart

  479. of the teaching

  480. of the gospel

  481. shows us

  482. who we are,

  483. not only with Christ,

  484. but who we were

  485. before Christ.

  486. The more that I

  487. dig into God's word,

  488. the more I begin

  489. to understand

  490. how unworthy

  491. I am of him,

  492. of what the gospel

  493. reveals to me,

  494. that I was a

  495. desperate sinner

  496. worthy of death

  497. and death alone.

  498. But what God

  499. gave me

  500. was not what I

  501. deserved.

  502. But what God

  503. gave me

  504. was his grace.

  505. And it

  506. transforms us.

  507. The gospel

  508. transforms how

  509. we see ourselves.

  510. And then when

  511. the gospel

  512. rightly applied

  513. to our lives,

  514. surrendered before God,

  515. it begins to

  516. change how

  517. we see others.

  518. And so there's

  519. a question that

  520. comes from this

  521. parable that

  522. a lot of people

  523. argue about.

  524. And the question

  525. is, when Jesus

  526. gives this parable,

  527. who's he talking

  528. about was served?

  529. Who are the

  530. least of these?

  531. Is it everybody?

  532. Is it all

  533. of the different

  534. people that I

  535. encounter, both

  536. saved and lost?

  537. Or is it just

  538. the saved people?

  539. So Jesus,

  540. what are you

  541. talking about

  542. when you say

  543. to the least

  544. of these?

  545. And I want

  546. to attempt

  547. this morning

  548. to answer

  549. that without

  550. answering it

  551. at all.

  552. All right?

  553. I think you'll

  554. understand what

  555. I'm saying

  556. in a second.

  557. The first

  558. thing that I

  559. want us to

  560. understand is

  561. it changes

  562. how we view

  563. the Imago

  564. Dei.

  565. And what I

  566. mean by the

  567. Imago Dei

  568. is everyone.

  569. It's the truth

  570. rooted for us

  571. in Genesis,

  572. in creation,

  573. when God

  574. said that he

  575. made man

  576. in his image

  577. and in his

  578. likeness.

  579. The phrase

  580. in his image

  581. and his likeness

  582. is the Imago

  583. Dei.

  584. It's what

  585. all of

  586. mankind,

  587. regardless of

  588. language,

  589. regardless of

  590. skin tone,

  591. regardless of

  592. race,

  593. regardless of

  594. country,

  595. regardless of

  596. male or

  597. female,

  598. it's what

  599. all of

  600. mankind

  601. has been

  602. made in.

  603. And what

  604. the gospel

  605. does is the

  606. gospel changes

  607. the way that

  608. we view

  609. everyone by

  610. causing us

  611. to understand

  612. and realize

  613. that everyone

  614. is made

  615. in the

  616. Imago Dei,

  617. that everyone

  618. is made

  619. in the image

  620. of God.

  621. So when I

  622. see someone,

  623. regardless of

  624. what I see,

  625. regardless of

  626. what they do,

  627. regardless of

  628. what they say,

  629. they were an

  630. individual made

  631. in the image

  632. of God,

  633. both the

  634. lost and the

  635. saved.

  636. in our

  637. world right

  638. now,

  639. I feel

  640. where we're

  641. being pushed

  642. toward

  643. is placing

  644. ourselves in

  645. camps,

  646. identifying

  647. with a

  648. group

  649. that either

  650. think like

  651. us,

  652. speak like

  653. us,

  654. believe like

  655. us,

  656. or look

  657. like us.

  658. And in

  659. that,

  660. those are

  661. the group

  662. of people

  663. that we

  664. should be

  665. drawn to.

  666. Those are

  667. the group

  668. of people

  669. that we

  670. should care

  671. for.

  672. Those are

  673. the group

  674. of people

  675. that we

  676. should love.

  677. Those are

  678. the group

  679. of people

  680. that we

  681. should give

  682. grace.

  683. Those are

  684. the group

  685. of people

  686. that we

  687. should align

  688. ourselves

  689. with.

  690. The problem

  691. and the

  692. tension

  693. within that

  694. is it

  695. goes against

  696. what Scripture

  697. teaches us,

  698. that everyone

  699. is made

  700. in the

  701. image

  702. and the

  703. likeness

  704. of God

  705. so that

  706. when we

  707. go out

  708. and we

  709. love,

  710. when there's

  711. hunger,

  712. when there's

  713. thirst,

  714. when there's

  715. desperation,

  716. that we

  717. look at

  718. mankind

  719. as the

  720. whole

  721. and how

  722. we view

  723. others

  724. matters.

  725. Whether

  726. they're lost

  727. or saved,

  728. whether

  729. they're

  730. Republican

  731. or Democrat,

  732. whether

  733. they're rich

  734. or poor,

  735. whether

  736. they're

  737. black or

  738. white.

  739. because of

  740. the

  741. Mago

  742. Day,

  743. there should

  744. be a

  745. burden

  746. in our

  747. hearts

  748. for all

  749. men,

  750. all women,

  751. and all

  752. children

  753. to hear,

  754. to see,

  755. and to have

  756. the opportunity

  757. to respond

  758. to the

  759. gospel of

  760. Jesus Christ.

  761. There is

  762. no more

  763. diversity

  764. than in

  765. heaven.

  766. there's

  767. no more

  768. diversity

  769. than in

  770. heaven.

  771. How we

  772. view

  773. everyone

  774. matters.

  775. But it

  776. should also

  777. change this,

  778. how we

  779. view the

  780. family,

  781. those of

  782. us who

  783. were saved.

  784. You know,

  785. it's an

  786. interesting

  787. thing when

  788. you look at

  789. scripture.

  790. God could

  791. have referred

  792. to his

  793. group of

  794. people by

  795. many things.

  796. He could

  797. refer to

  798. them as

  799. a

  800. denomination.

  801. He could

  802. have referred

  803. to them

  804. as a

  805. religion.

  806. He could

  807. have referred

  808. to them

  809. as an

  810. organization

  811. or a

  812. non-profit.

  813. But he

  814. didn't.

  815. That time

  816. and time

  817. and time

  818. again,

  819. the imagery

  820. and the

  821. picture of

  822. what we

  823. see in

  824. scripture

  825. is that

  826. of the

  827. family.

  828. So that

  829. you're my

  830. brother,

  831. and I'm

  832. your brother.

  833. So that

  834. you're my

  835. sister,

  836. and I'm

  837. your brother.

  838. That all

  839. of us,

  840. regardless of

  841. our skin

  842. tone,

  843. regardless of

  844. our language,

  845. regardless of

  846. where we

  847. were born,

  848. regardless of

  849. how we

  850. voted,

  851. regardless of

  852. what we've

  853. done or

  854. what we

  855. will do,

  856. regardless of

  857. our education,

  858. regardless of

  859. our placement

  860. in society,

  861. that we

  862. are all

  863. family,

  864. brothers and

  865. sisters in

  866. Christ,

  867. before the

  868. heavenly

  869. father.

  870. not the

  871. CEO,

  872. not the

  873. manager,

  874. but before

  875. our heavenly

  876. father.

  877. And I

  878. think right

  879. now,

  880. more so,

  881. my life

  882. has been

  883. brief so

  884. far,

  885. but I

  886. believe there's

  887. an opportunity

  888. for the

  889. church,

  890. for the

  891. family of

  892. God,

  893. to display

  894. themselves

  895. in such

  896. a capacity

  897. that glorifies

  898. him and

  899. draws people

  900. to him.

  901. That we

  902. have an

  903. opportunity,

  904. that as

  905. Berger talked

  906. about at the

  907. very beginning

  908. of God's

  909. plan,

  910. that in the

  911. midst of the

  912. chaos,

  913. in the midst

  914. of the ugly,

  915. in the midst

  916. of the hatred,

  917. in the midst

  918. of the name

  919. calling,

  920. that we

  921. have an

  922. opportunity to

  923. reflect something

  924. different in the

  925. family that

  926. causes everyone

  927. else to not

  928. know and

  929. understand why

  930. they can hate

  931. me, but I

  932. just love

  933. them.

  934. And it

  935. gives us

  936. that moment

  937. in time.

  938. But the

  939. question that I

  940. have for us

  941. as a church,

  942. what kind

  943. of family

  944. are we

  945. displaying?

  946. What kind

  947. of family

  948. are we

  949. portraying?

  950. What are we

  951. living out

  952. in this

  953. world?

  954. I want to

  955. tell y'all a

  956. story and

  957. wrap up with

  958. this.

  959. Growing up,

  960. one of my

  961. best friends

  962. was a guy

  963. named Pat.

  964. Pat and I

  965. were best

  966. friends all

  967. through elementary

  968. school and

  969. middle school.

  970. Pat would

  971. always come

  972. over to my

  973. house and

  974. spend the

  975. night.

  976. We played

  977. on the same

  978. baseball team

  979. together.

  980. Johnny's

  981. recaps.

  982. My dad

  983. was our

  984. coach.

  985. I was the

  986. second baseman.

  987. He was the

  988. shortstop.

  989. He would

  990. come to

  991. my house

  992. and we

  993. would just

  994. play baseball

  995. all day

  996. long.

  997. He'd come

  998. over Friday

  999. when we

  1000. got out

  1001. of school

  1002. and he

  1003. would stay

  1004. until after

  1005. church on

  1006. Sunday.

  1007. Pat was

  1008. like a

  1009. brother to

  1010. me.

  1011. I loved

  1012. him.

  1013. We're

  1014. still

  1015. friends to

  1016. this day.

  1017. Absolutely

  1018. love Pat.

  1019. Pat would

  1020. spend the

  1021. whole weekend

  1022. at our

  1023. house,

  1024. would eat

  1025. meals with

  1026. us,

  1027. would watch

  1028. TV with

  1029. us.

  1030. My parents

  1031. were like

  1032. his parents.

  1033. My sister

  1034. was like

  1035. his sister.

  1036. We know

  1037. the beautiful

  1038. thing about

  1039. elementary age

  1040. kids sometimes

  1041. is we say

  1042. things that

  1043. everyone's

  1044. thinking but

  1045. no one has

  1046. yet said,

  1047. right?

  1048. And one day

  1049. Pat's at my

  1050. house and

  1051. we're playing

  1052. and we're

  1053. having a good

  1054. time and I

  1055. remember this

  1056. conversation.

  1057. I said to

  1058. him, I said,

  1059. Pat, man,

  1060. why don't you

  1061. ever ask me to

  1062. spend the

  1063. night at your

  1064. house?

  1065. And he

  1066. kind of sat

  1067. there for a

  1068. minute and

  1069. he said,

  1070. man, he

  1071. said,

  1072. see, I

  1073. don't know

  1074. my dad.

  1075. My dad's

  1076. never been

  1077. involved in

  1078. my life.

  1079. And I

  1080. come here

  1081. and your

  1082. dad takes

  1083. us down to

  1084. the gas

  1085. station and

  1086. buys us

  1087. candy and

  1088. drinks and

  1089. plays baseball

  1090. with us in

  1091. the front

  1092. yard.

  1093. He said,

  1094. my mom,

  1095. she's got her

  1096. own problems

  1097. and her own

  1098. struggles and

  1099. she's not like

  1100. your mom.

  1101. He said,

  1102. I don't know if

  1103. my mom will be

  1104. at home when I

  1105. wake up in the

  1106. morning.

  1107. She doesn't

  1108. cook for us.

  1109. She doesn't

  1110. do stuff.

  1111. My mom would

  1112. go out and

  1113. play basketball

  1114. with us and

  1115. beat us most

  1116. of the time.

  1117. He said,

  1118. my mom,

  1119. she doesn't

  1120. do that.

  1121. He said,

  1122. my house

  1123. isn't like

  1124. your house.

  1125. We don't

  1126. eat together.

  1127. We don't

  1128. watch TV

  1129. together.

  1130. We don't

  1131. hang out

  1132. together.

  1133. He said,

  1134. but when I

  1135. come to

  1136. your house,

  1137. you all

  1138. become my

  1139. family.

  1140. You see,

  1141. what Pat

  1142. experienced

  1143. was a depth

  1144. of love

  1145. that he

  1146. longed for.

  1147. A depth

  1148. of love

  1149. that he

  1150. craved

  1151. and that he

  1152. needed.

  1153. there's

  1154. people in

  1155. this world

  1156. that need

  1157. to experience

  1158. the love

  1159. of Jesus

  1160. Christ.

  1161. A depth

  1162. of love

  1163. that as

  1164. Christians,

  1165. we say

  1166. we know,

  1167. we say

  1168. we've

  1169. experienced,

  1170. we've even

  1171. acknowledged

  1172. that we've

  1173. been called

  1174. to share it

  1175. with them.

  1176. but the

  1177. question I

  1178. have

  1179. for all

  1180. of us,

  1181. do we?

  1182. Do we?

  1183. There's only

  1184. two options.

  1185. You're either

  1186. a sheep

  1187. or you're

  1188. a goat.

  1189. Jesus is real

  1190. clear.

  1191. And I

  1192. love the

  1193. argument

  1194. that happened

  1195. between those

  1196. two little

  1197. kids.

  1198. I'm one,

  1199. no I'm one,

  1200. no I'm one,

  1201. no I'm one.

  1202. And here's

  1203. my hope.

  1204. I hope

  1205. we all

  1206. are.

  1207. I hope

  1208. we all

  1209. are.

  1210. But it

  1211. says

  1212. that we

  1213. gotta live

  1214. like it.

  1215. So are

  1216. you a

  1217. sheep?

  1218. Are you

  1219. a goat?

  1220. Would you

  1221. pray with

  1222. me?

  1223. Lord,

  1224. come to

  1225. you this

  1226. morning.

  1227. Lord,

  1228. I thank

  1229. you for

  1230. your

  1231. unfailing

  1232. love for

  1233. us.

  1234. Lord,

  1235. it is

  1236. by your

  1237. love and

  1238. through your

  1239. love only

  1240. we find

  1241. life,

  1242. we find

  1243. hope,

  1244. we find

  1245. purpose.

  1246. Lord,

  1247. if those

  1248. are of us

  1249. that are

  1250. sheep.

  1251. Lord,

  1252. may we

  1253. continue

  1254. to be

  1255. transformed

  1256. by the

  1257. gospel,

  1258. to live

  1259. our lives

  1260. worthy

  1261. of the

  1262. name by

  1263. which we've

  1264. been saved.

  1265. Lord,

  1266. continuing

  1267. to press

  1268. into

  1269. in difficult

  1270. situations,

  1271. in difficult

  1272. relationships,

  1273. grace and

  1274. kindness.

  1275. Lord,

  1276. that we

  1277. would understand

  1278. that within

  1279. us that

  1280. the gospel

  1281. is greater

  1282. than our

  1283. opinion.

  1284. And Lord,

  1285. that the

  1286. gospel maybe

  1287. begin to

  1288. shape and

  1289. change our

  1290. opinion.

  1291. Lord,

  1292. may we

  1293. begin to

  1294. understand

  1295. what it

  1296. looks like

  1297. to love

  1298. everyone and

  1299. love the

  1300. family of

  1301. God.

  1302. Lord,

  1303. the beauty

  1304. that is

  1305. developed

  1306. and

  1307. matured

  1308. and how

  1309. that

  1310. attracts

  1311. and how

  1312. that

  1313. draws

  1314. in

  1315. and how

  1316. people

  1317. long

  1318. to want

  1319. to know

  1320. you.

  1321. Lord,

  1322. convict our

  1323. hearts,

  1324. capture us.

  1325. It's in

  1326. Jesus' name

  1327. we pray.

  1328. Amen.

  1329. One question

  1330. for you.

  1331. I just

  1332. got one.

  1333. We're all

  1334. going to walk

  1335. out these

  1336. doors.

  1337. We're all

  1338. going to go

  1339. to our

  1340. lives.

  1341. Monday is

  1342. going to

  1343. come for

  1344. all of us

  1345. short of

  1346. Jesus

  1347. calling us

  1348. back.

  1349. As you

  1350. leave here,

  1351. will you

  1352. leave a

  1353. sheep

  1354. or will you

  1355. leave a

  1356. goat?

  1357. We'll stand

  1358. as we

  1359. worship him.
