  1. Hi, and welcome to the Willow Ridge Church weekly podcast.

  2. This is where you can find audio for our current and past sermons.

  3. We hope that you enjoy this week's installment, and be sure to check back next week to hear

  4. the latest message.

  5. Thanks for listening.

  6. Good morning.

  7. Thank you so much for being here this morning.

  8. Thank you for joining us online.

  9. If you would, take your Bible, turn to Luke chapter 14.

    Luke 14 chapter mention

  10. We're in our series on the parables of Jesus.

  11. We're going to be looking at this parable of the great banquet found in verses 12 through 24.

  12. I want to ask you, though, before we get going, to be praying for our student mission team.

  13. Actually, Pastor Bo and Aaron are actually already up in the Asheville area as they prep

  14. to get ready for the students to come.

  15. They're cooking for the week, so they need extra prayer on that.

  16. Actually, Cal and Karina, our interim youth ministers, are leading the team of students and adults

  17. as they're going to be ministering at the children's orphanage there in Black Mountain, North Carolina.

  18. So they've got a lot of different things planned for them up there, but I know they would love for you to be praying for them this week

  19. as they have opportunities to share the gospel, as they have opportunities to be the hands and feet of God

  20. as they minister in that area.

  21. So please pray for them and join me, if you would, now as we pray for them as well.

  22. Lord, we do thank you for the opportunity that our students and our adults have this coming week to serve you,

  23. to serve you in the Black Mountain area, to serve you at the children's home.

  24. Lord, we just pray that you would open doors of opportunities for them to share your gospel

  25. with everyone they come in contact with.

  26. Lord, be with them as they are your hands and feet, as they do work.

  27. Lord, we are grateful to you that you allow them this opportunity to serve you

  28. and to serve your people that you've created.

  29. Lord, we thank you, and we ask this prayer in your name. Amen.

  30. Well, let me set the scene for you, kind of like what the little cartoon did for us.

  31. The beginning of chapter 14, we see that Jesus has been invited to the lead Pharisees' home on the Sabbath

  32. for a meal, and so in this home are other adults in which this, other men in which this Pharisee has invited to the table.

  33. Jesus knows that entering into such a scene means that they are looking for a way to trap him.

  34. Anytime you had the Pharisees and Jesus in the same context, it was their way of looking for a way to trap Jesus,

  35. find out anything they could on him, and it says in that scripture,

  36. even to observe him, to be able to discount who he is.

  37. Jesus had a large following.

  38. They didn't like that.

  39. Ultimately, that would be, give reasons to crucify Christ.

  40. We know crucify him for the sacrifice of our sins,

  41. but that was the whole slant of the Pharisees that trapped Jesus.

  42. Jesus being who he is,

  43. God in human form, in divine form, had the wisdom to see past what they were trying to do.

  44. And so, he was able to present a question to them which he knew they couldn't answer.

  45. And part of it dealt with the healing of a man who had dropsy.

  46. And so, Jesus actually does heal him, but in the context of that, he avoids the trap in which they're trying to set up.

  47. So, in the context of this, they're still sitting around this table together.

  48. Jesus continues to point out to the leader in this home, the person of this home,

  49. that, hey, your motives are not right.

  50. Your intent is to invite only the rich.

  51. Your intent is to only invite the close friends that you have into your home,

  52. while you miss all the others in your community.

  53. And so, that then leads us to the parable in which we're going to look at now.

  54. Jesus is constantly trying to challenge not only everybody he comes in contact with,

  55. like the Pharisees, but he's also challenging even his disciples

  56. to have a shift in thinking, to have a shift in their attitude,

  57. to have a shift in their character that represents God in their life.

  58. So, if you would, take your Bible.

  59. Let's look and pick up in verse 12.

  60. In chapter 14, he said,

  61. So, once again, he's telling this man of who not to invite.

  62. At least they also invite you in return, and you will be repaid.

  63. But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind,

  64. and you will be blessed because they cannot repay you,

  65. for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just.

  66. When one of those who reclined at the table with him heard these things,

  67. he said to him,

  68. Blessed is everyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God.

  69. But he said to him,

  70. A man once gave a great banquet and invited many.

  71. And at the time for the banquet,

  72. he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited,

  73. Come, for everything is now ready.

  74. But they all alike began to make excuses.

  75. The first said to him,

  76. I have bought a field.

  77. I must go out and see it.

  78. Please have me excused.

  79. And another said,

  80. I have bought five yoke of oxen,

  81. and I go to examine them.

  82. Please have me excused.

  83. And another said,

  84. I have married a wife,

  85. and therefore I cannot come.

  86. So the servant came and reported these things to his master.

  87. And then the master of the house became angry and said to his servant,

  88. Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city,

  89. and bring in the poor and crippled and blind and lame.

  90. And the servant said,

  91. Sir, what you have commanded has been done,

  92. and still there is room.

  93. And the master said to the servant,

  94. Go out to the highways and hedges,

  95. and compel people to come in,

  96. that my house may be filled.

  97. For I tell you,

  98. none of those men who were invited

  99. shall taste my banquet.

  100. So Jesus here is telling us an earthly story,

  101. a story that has practical application,

  102. but at the same time in this parable,

  103. we also see that it has an eternal application as well.

  104. What kind of throws me off is the fact that the Pharisees,

  105. not once do we see in this passage,

  106. have a clue of who they are really sitting in the presence of.

  107. Yes, they know he's Jesus.

  108. Yes, at this point, they know that he's done miracles.

  109. They know these things,

  110. yet they truly don't understand that they sit in the presence of God.

  111. And that just simply goes way above their head.

  112. But Jesus begins, once again,

  113. the second time around,

  114. to press in on who they are,

  115. to press in on their own belief systems,

  116. to get them to realize

  117. what is asked of them.

  118. So let's break it down together.

  119. Let's kind of pull back some things,

  120. and let's look at some key words and phrases

  121. that we see in this passage.

  122. In verse 12, we see,

  123. once again, he said also to the man who invited him,

  124. Jesus is saying this,

  125. when you give a dinner or a banquet,

  126. do not invite.

  127. He's telling him who he needs to invite.

  128. Now this man's already invited rich folks.

  129. He's already invited his closest friends.

  130. Jesus is saying,

  131. you've given the wrong invitation.

  132. Your friends or your brothers or your relatives

  133. or rich neighbors,

  134. at least they also invite you in return,

  135. and you be repaid.

  136. You see, the whole idea of building their status was,

  137. I invite you to a meal,

  138. I expect you to invite me back to a meal.

  139. That was the whole mindset.

  140. If I take you to lunch,

  141. well, next week I expect you to take me to lunch.

  142. You see, their goal was to keep a certain status

  143. in their culture, in their society.

  144. And they played to that end.

  145. Then in verse 13, it says,

  146. but when you give a feast,

  147. Jesus continues to say,

  148. but when you give a feast,

  149. invite the poor.

  150. Change your invitee list.

  151. Change who you bring around the table with you.

  152. He says, invite the crippled, the lame, the blind,

  153. the same group of people that he mentioned earlier

  154. in the chapter.

  155. Verse 14,

  156. and you will be blessed.

  157. You see, if you just take somebody out for a meal

  158. or you invite them to your house for a meal

  159. and they do that in return,

  160. that's not really a blessing.

  161. You're just putting on an expectation.

  162. But Jesus says,

  163. if you invite someone to your table

  164. who can't invite you back,

  165. then you're inviting out of compassion.

  166. You're inviting out of a need.

  167. And as a result of that,

  168. you're going to receive my blessing.

  169. A blessing is not going to come to you

  170. in a monetary sense,

  171. but the blessing is going to come to you

  172. because you've done something for someone else.

  173. And that's a problem that they had.

  174. They were so caught up on their self,

  175. exalting their self,

  176. that we see earlier in the chapter,

  177. that humility wasn't even in their vocabulary.

  178. But Jesus continues to press in on them

  179. to help them to realize

  180. what he calls people to do.

  181. And you will be blessed

  182. because they cannot repay you,

  183. for you will be repaid

  184. at the resurrection of the just.

  185. In several other translations,

  186. that resurrection of the just

  187. also reads rejection,

  188. not rejection,

  189. resurrection of the righteous.

  190. Resurrection of the righteous

  191. is resurrection for those who follow Christ,

  192. who serve him,

  193. who love him as their Lord and Savior.

  194. That's what that reference is.

  195. You see, you and I know

  196. that Jesus' goal

  197. was to build relationships

  198. with an invitation.

  199. Not to build relationships

  200. in hopes to get something back.

  201. We also see in here

  202. that there is an earthly blessing

  203. by inviting someone

  204. out of compassion

  205. and out of humility,

  206. but there's also

  207. the eternal repayment

  208. for doing what God calls you and I to do.

  209. as his child.

  210. You see, new friendships

  211. are a blessing.

  212. When you and I

  213. get to know somebody

  214. for the first time,

  215. we begin a journey with them

  216. and in turn,

  217. it becomes a blessing to us.

  218. I don't know how many times

  219. in my own life

  220. where I've prejudged someone

  221. to thankfully learn

  222. that they were far away

  223. from what I thought.

  224. God began to open up a door

  225. to open up clearly

  226. what that person means.

  227. God clearly showed me

  228. the investment that I can make

  229. and the investment

  230. that they can make in my life

  231. to help me to be a person

  232. that God desires for me to be.

  233. God uses relationships

  234. to refine us.

  235. God uses relationships

  236. to bring us closer to him

  237. as they speak into our lives.

  238. But when we only invite

  239. a certain circle of friends,

  240. we lose out

  241. on all the other blessings

  242. around us

  243. that come in the form

  244. of relationships.

  245. And they couldn't see that.

  246. But yet,

  247. Jesus was trying

  248. to help them realize that.

  249. When was the last time

  250. that you blessed somebody

  251. simply by saying a kind word?

  252. When was the last time

  253. you blessed somebody

  254. by simply acknowledging

  255. their presence?

  256. Have you ever been surprised

  257. when you're at Walmart

  258. or Target

  259. or wherever you find yourself

  260. and you simply extend

  261. a kind gesture of hello?

  262. How are you doing?

  263. Are you having a good day?

  264. There's been many times

  265. when I've said those phrases

  266. that I get this look

  267. of shock

  268. in the person's face

  269. because nobody

  270. has said that to them.

  271. It's amazing

  272. what you and I

  273. through the power of God

  274. can do

  275. through a simple gesture

  276. of kindness

  277. by greeting someone

  278. and acknowledging

  279. that person

  280. because too many times

  281. they go through their day

  282. where nobody acknowledges

  283. their existence.

  284. And Jesus wanted help

  285. to help these men

  286. in this room

  287. in this home

  288. to realize

  289. that they need

  290. to acknowledge

  291. those

  292. that they normally

  293. don't acknowledge.

  294. And the final point

  295. of that verse

  296. says to you and I

  297. as Christ followers

  298. our repayment

  299. comes at the resurrection.

  300. We're not getting chips

  301. we're not getting coins

  302. we're not getting

  303. anything like that

  304. on earth

  305. because God

  306. doesn't work that way.

  307. But what God does

  308. for you and I

  309. is at the resurrection

  310. when we spend

  311. eternity with him.

  312. In verse 15

  313. as we go on

  314. we see this

  315. when one of those

  316. who reclined

  317. at the table

  318. with him

  319. heard these things

  320. he said to him

  321. this man said

  322. to Jesus

  323. blessed is everyone

  324. who will eat bread

  325. in the kingdom

  326. of God.

  327. Now we kind of

  328. get the idea

  329. that maybe he's

  330. getting ahead

  331. of himself.

  332. Now here's a Pharisee

  333. who doesn't know

  334. who is actually

  335. sitting in his presence

  336. but yet

  337. he is projecting

  338. the fact

  339. that he's going

  340. to be blessed

  341. when he gets

  342. into the kingdom

  343. of God.

  344. And I think

  345. we realize

  346. and we see

  347. in this passage

  348. of scripture

  349. Jesus' approach

  350. to his comment

  351. by how Jesus

  352. responds

  353. to his comment.

  354. Truly

  355. he made

  356. a true statement

  357. but yet

  358. his own life

  359. this Pharisee

  360. his own life

  361. did not represent

  362. the statement

  363. that he made.

  364. Because listen

  365. to what Jesus

  366. says

  367. but he

  368. Jesus

  369. said to him

  370. a man once

  371. gave a great banquet

  372. so he's beginning

  373. to unfold

  374. a story

  375. for this man

  376. to help him

  377. see a truth

  378. that he's not

  379. seeing any other way.

  380. A man once

  381. gave a great banquet

  382. and invited many.

  383. Now you and I

  384. got to realize

  385. as followers

  386. of Christ

  387. in our relationship

  388. with God

  389. and God's

  390. relationship

  391. with the world

  392. it's not about

  393. a few

  394. it's about

  395. the many.

  396. It's about

  397. his message

  398. of the gospel

  399. reaching everybody

  400. in this world

  401. that he has created

  402. and he's created

  403. everyone.

  404. So when we see

  405. there that

  406. this man

  407. when we look

  408. at it from

  409. an eternal

  410. perspective

  411. of this parable

  412. this man

  413. is representing

  414. God.

  415. Not just

  416. an ordinary man

  417. there's two

  418. stories going on

  419. here.

  420. There's the

  421. earthly story

  422. the practical

  423. side of it

  424. but there's

  425. also the

  426. spiritual side

  427. of it

  428. there's the

  429. eternal side

  430. of it

  431. that God

  432. is pointing

  433. out.

  434. A man once

  435. gave a great

  436. banquet

  437. and invited

  438. many

  439. and at the

  440. time for

  441. the banquet

  442. he sent

  443. his servant

  444. to say

  445. to those

  446. who had

  447. been invited

  448. come

  449. for everything

  450. is now

  451. ready.

  452. It was a

  453. custom of

  454. that day

  455. to send

  456. out two

  457. invitations.

  458. It kind

  459. of reminded

  460. me as I

  461. read that

  462. it kind

  463. of reminded

  464. me of

  465. you know

  466. if you get

  467. one of those

  468. cards in

  469. the mail

  470. that says

  471. save the

  472. date

  473. you know

  474. mark this

  475. date on

  476. because here's

  477. our celebration

  478. coming whether

  479. it be marriage

  480. whether it be

  481. some other type

  482. of announcement

  483. but in that

  484. day and time

  485. two invitations

  486. went out.

  487. The first

  488. invitation was

  489. to find out

  490. who is actually

  491. going to come

  492. to the banquet.

  493. They got the

  494. yes or they

  495. got the no

  496. and so they

  497. would come back

  498. based on the

  499. yes and they

  500. would plan and

  501. they would prep

  502. for that

  503. banquet.

  504. Everything

  505. that was

  506. involved, all

  507. the food

  508. that was

  509. involved, all

  510. the extra

  511. special things

  512. that were

  513. involved in

  514. setting up

  515. this banquet

  516. that was

  517. the first

  518. invitation.

  519. But then

  520. when the

  521. person who

  522. put on the

  523. banquet or

  524. put on the

  525. gathering had

  526. everything ready

  527. everything was

  528. prepared and

  529. prepped and

  530. ready to serve

  531. then he would

  532. send that

  533. servant back out

  534. to those who

  535. said yes to

  536. say now is

  537. the time.

  538. So it's not

  539. like you get

  540. an invitation

  541. in the mail

  542. and it says

  543. on July 21st

  544. at 7pm

  545. show up at

  546. my house.

  547. When the

  548. food was

  549. ready that's

  550. when you got

  551. the second

  552. invitation.

  553. When the

  554. banquet was

  555. ready that's

  556. when you got

  557. the second

  558. invitation.

  559. So the

  560. servant goes

  561. out and

  562. invites and

  563. tells everybody

  564. come for

  565. everything is

  566. ready.

  567. Now again

  568. the second

  569. part of this

  570. parable is

  571. talking about

  572. eternity.

  573. And as I

  574. read this

  575. part there's

  576. another thing

  577. in scripture

  578. that talks

  579. about eternity.

  580. Jesus is

  581. talking to

  582. his disciples

  583. in John

    John 14 chapter mention

  584. chapter 14.

  585. And so

  586. when I read

  587. this my mind

  588. also went to

  589. this passage

  590. because it

  591. helps us see

  592. the mind of

  593. God and

  594. how God

  595. prepares for

  596. his people

  597. who love

  598. him, who

  599. serve him,

  600. who obey

  601. him, who

  602. call him

  603. father.

  604. John 14

  605. 2-3 says

  606. in my

  607. father's

  608. house are

  609. many

  610. rooms.

  611. Once again

  612. we get that

  613. word, that

  614. concept of

  615. many, not

  616. a few.

  617. God has

  618. plans for

  619. everyone,

  620. everyone who

  621. will call

  622. on his

  623. name.

  624. He goes

  625. on to

  626. say,

  627. if it

  628. were not

  629. so, would

  630. I have

  631. told you

  632. that I

  633. go to

  634. prepare a

  635. place for

  636. you.

  637. In

  638. Jesus'

  639. story, in

  640. parable, he

  641. talks about

  642. preparing a

  643. meal.

  644. In this

  645. message to the

  646. disciples, he

  647. talks about

  648. preparing a

  649. place.

  650. And if I

  651. go and

  652. prepare a

  653. place for

  654. you, I

  655. will come

  656. again and

  657. will take

  658. you to

  659. myself, that

  660. where I

  661. am, you

  662. may be

  663. also.

  664. God's

  665. desire for

  666. you, God's

  667. desire for

  668. me, God's

  669. desire for

  670. all creation

  671. is that we

  672. live in

  673. eternity in

  674. the presence

  675. of God.

  676. And that

  677. is a part

  678. of what

  679. this parable

  680. is about.

  681. We go on

  682. to see,

  683. but they

  684. all alike

  685. began to

  686. make

  687. excuses.

  688. not just

  689. one of

  690. them that

  691. said yes,

  692. not just

  693. two of

  694. them that

  695. said yes,

  696. but every

  697. one of

  698. the invitees

  699. who said

  700. yes to

  701. coming to

  702. the banquet

  703. came up

  704. with an

  705. excuse for

  706. why they

  707. couldn't.

  708. The first

  709. said to

  710. him, I

  711. have bought

  712. a field

  713. and I

  714. must go

  715. out and

  716. see it.

  717. Please

  718. have me

  719. excused.

  720. And another

  721. said, I

  722. have bought

  723. five yoke of

  724. oxen and I

  725. go to

  726. examine them.

  727. Please

  728. have me

  729. excused.

  730. So in

  731. this case,

  732. these two

  733. have possessions

  734. that are

  735. more important

  736. than coming

  737. to this

  738. banquet.

  739. Now this

  740. is the

  741. banquet.

  742. This is

  743. the most

  744. important

  745. banquet of

  746. their life.

  747. This is

  748. God's

  749. banquet.

  750. And yet

  751. they have

  752. excuses for

  753. why they

  754. can't.

  755. Their

  756. possessions

  757. became more

  758. important to

  759. them than

  760. becoming a

  761. part of the

  762. banquet that

  763. God was

  764. throwing,

  765. that this

  766. man was

  767. throwing.

  768. It goes

  769. on to say

  770. there, it

  771. says, and

  772. another said, I

  773. have married a

  774. wife and

  775. therefore I

  776. cannot come.

  777. Now he's

  778. blaming his

  779. spouse.

  780. He's blaming

  781. his wife for

  782. why he can't

  783. come.

  784. There are

  785. times in a

  786. person's life

  787. that relationships

  788. become more

  789. important than

  790. what God

  791. desires.

  792. In this

  793. scenario, the

  794. relationship with

  795. the spouse was

  796. more important at

  797. that moment.

  798. Can all these

  799. things that

  800. they brought

  801. up happen

  802. at another

  803. time?

  804. Of course

  805. they can.

  806. Can this

  807. person, this

  808. man go and

  809. see his

  810. property?

  811. Yes, he

  812. can.

  813. Can this

  814. man go and

  815. see the

  816. oxen that

  817. he's purchased?

  818. Of course

  819. he can.

  820. Can he

  821. take one

  822. moment and

  823. not be with

  824. his wife?

  825. Of course

  826. he can.

  827. But they

  828. chose the

  829. excuse over

  830. the presence

  831. of the man

  832. throwing the

  833. banquet.

  834. They chose

  835. an excuse

  836. over the

  837. opportunity to be

  838. in the

  839. presence of

  840. God.

  841. Which causes

  842. me to ask

  843. myself a

  844. question.

  845. When do

  846. I allow

  847. possessions and

  848. relationships to

  849. get in the way

  850. of my

  851. relationship with

  852. God?

  853. Not only when

  854. do I, but

  855. when have I

  856. allowed

  857. possessions and

  858. relationships to

  859. get in between

  860. my relationship

  861. with God?

  862. Because it

  863. happens.

  864. God speaks

  865. about possessions.

  866. God speaks

  867. about relationships

  868. all throughout

  869. his word.

  870. And the whole

  871. point is for

  872. you and I to

  873. have relationship

  874. with God.

  875. Everything else

  876. filters itself

  877. out.

  878. Why did God

  879. say in the

  880. Ten Commandments,

  881. do not have

  882. any other God

  883. before me?

  884. Because God

  885. desires our

  886. attention.

  887. God desires our

  888. full focus.

  889. It's not that

  890. he doesn't want

  891. us to have

  892. possessions.

  893. It's not that

  894. he doesn't want

  895. us to have

  896. relationships.

  897. But he does

  898. want to have

  899. our attention.

  900. He does want

  901. to have our

  902. relationship with

  903. him.

  904. And it's

  905. actually a

  906. question that I

  907. got to continue

  908. to ask myself

  909. and to continue

  910. to evaluate

  911. myself to make

  912. sure possessions

  913. don't supersede

  914. my relationship

  915. with God.

  916. To make sure

  917. that my

  918. relationship with

  919. my wife,

  920. my relationship

  921. with my sons,

  922. my relationship

  923. with my friends

  924. and the people

  925. that I minister

  926. with and minister

  927. to do not

  928. become the top

  929. priority and

  930. supersede my

  931. relationship with

  932. the Lord.

  933. Jesus goes on

  934. to continue to

  935. tell the parable.

  936. He says,

  937. so the servant

  938. came and reported

  939. these things to

  940. his master.

  941. And then the

  942. master of the

  943. house became

  944. angry and said

  945. to his servant,

  946. go out quickly

  947. to the streets.

  948. Here's one of

  949. those turning

  950. point moments

  951. for this man

  952. throwing this

  953. banquet.

  954. He could have

  955. easily scattered

  956. everything.

  957. He could have

  958. easily thrown

  959. out all the

  960. preparation,

  961. all the food,

  962. just disregarded

  963. it whatsoever.

  964. But yet he

  965. chose to take a

  966. negative situation

  967. and to make

  968. something good

  969. out of it.

  970. He chose to

  971. bring others

  972. into his home

  973. that normally

  974. he would not

  975. have.

  976. Go out quickly

  977. to the streets

  978. and lanes of

  979. the city and

  980. bring in the

  981. poor and the

  982. crippled and

  983. the blind in

  984. the lame.

  985. Once again,

  986. Jesus is pressing

  987. into these men

  988. around the table.

  989. These are the

  990. people that you

  991. need to look for.

  992. Quit always

  993. looking at the

  994. same ones.

  995. Invite those

  996. that you normally

  997. do not invite.

  998. And the servant

  999. said,

  1000. Sir, what you

  1001. commanded,

  1002. I love this,

  1003. Sir, what you

  1004. have commanded

  1005. has been done.

  1006. I followed

  1007. through with

  1008. what your

  1009. request was.

  1010. But then he

  1011. says, and

  1012. still there is

  1013. room.

  1014. There's still a

  1015. place for

  1016. somebody else.

  1017. There's still a

  1018. place for more

  1019. people to come

  1020. in.

  1021. And then listen

  1022. to what Jesus

  1023. says of the

  1024. master's response

  1025. was.

  1026. And the master

  1027. said to the

  1028. servant, go out

  1029. to the highways

  1030. and the hedges.

  1031. And listen

  1032. to this.

  1033. I think this

  1034. word is so

  1035. important right

  1036. here.

  1037. And compel.

  1038. He didn't say

  1039. and go out to

  1040. the highways and

  1041. the hedges and

  1042. get people to

  1043. come in.

  1044. He said, no,

  1045. go out to the

  1046. highway and the

  1047. hedges and

  1048. compel people to

  1049. come in.

  1050. Aggressively

  1051. encourage them to

  1052. come into my

  1053. home and sit at

  1054. my table.

  1055. Don't be

  1056. passive.

  1057. Don't settle

  1058. for one

  1059. response but

  1060. do it until

  1061. you convince

  1062. them to

  1063. come into

  1064. my house

  1065. because I

  1066. know how

  1067. important this

  1068. meal is for

  1069. them.

  1070. Compel them

  1071. to come in.

  1072. When's the

  1073. last time I

  1074. compelled

  1075. somebody to

  1076. be a part of

  1077. what God is

  1078. about?

  1079. When is the

  1080. last time I

  1081. pressed in,

  1082. pressed in,

  1083. and pressed

  1084. in instead

  1085. of gave in

  1086. to a simple

  1087. no?

  1088. Compel people

  1089. to come in

  1090. that my

  1091. house, once

  1092. again, Jesus'

  1093. word, the

  1094. reflection of

  1095. God the

  1096. Father, my

  1097. house may be

  1098. filled.

  1099. I just don't

  1100. want a few

  1101. people in the

  1102. room.

  1103. I want them

  1104. falling out the

  1105. windows.

  1106. I want them

  1107. falling out the

  1108. doors.

  1109. I want to see a

  1110. line of people

  1111. trying to get

  1112. through the door

  1113. to get to

  1114. the feast

  1115. because that's

  1116. what satisfies

  1117. me.

  1118. That's what

  1119. brings glory

  1120. to me.

  1121. And then the

  1122. last verse of

  1123. this parable

  1124. is just one of

  1125. those things

  1126. that you can

  1127. call it a gut

  1128. punch, you can

  1129. call it a slap

  1130. upside the head,

  1131. however you want

  1132. to label it.

  1133. And Jesus

  1134. says,

  1135. for I tell

  1136. you.

  1137. He's gone

  1138. now from

  1139. telling a

  1140. parable,

  1141. telling a

  1142. story,

  1143. to now

  1144. making a

  1145. statement.

  1146. For I

  1147. tell you,

  1148. none of

  1149. those men

  1150. who were

  1151. invited,

  1152. talking about

  1153. the men who

  1154. came up with

  1155. the excuses,

  1156. none of

  1157. those men

  1158. who were

  1159. invited

  1160. shall taste,

  1161. very important

  1162. word,

  1163. my.

  1164. None of

  1165. those men

  1166. who were

  1167. invited shall

  1168. taste my

  1169. banquet.

  1170. None of

  1171. those men

  1172. who were

  1173. invited shall

  1174. see my

  1175. eternity.

  1176. None of

  1177. those men

  1178. who were

  1179. invited shall

  1180. be in my

  1181. presence for

  1182. eternity.

  1183. See,

  1184. Jesus knew

  1185. the heart of

  1186. that Pharisee

  1187. who said,

  1188. blessed is the

  1189. one who eats

  1190. in the kingdom

  1191. of God.

  1192. He already

  1193. knew the

  1194. man's heart.

  1195. He knew the

  1196. number of

  1197. excuses that

  1198. man had

  1199. come up

  1200. with and

  1201. would continue

  1202. to come up

  1203. with.

  1204. And right

  1205. then and

  1206. there,

  1207. he said to

  1208. him,

  1209. it's not

  1210. going to be

  1211. you.

  1212. And all

  1213. you who are

  1214. also sitting

  1215. at the table,

  1216. it's not

  1217. going to be

  1218. you either.

  1219. That's a

  1220. strong statement.

  1221. Because you

  1222. being a

  1223. Hebrew,

  1224. you've kind

  1225. of got this

  1226. idea that,

  1227. yeah,

  1228. it's going

  1229. to be me

  1230. because I'm

  1231. a Hebrew.

  1232. You be a

  1233. Pharisee,

  1234. you've got

  1235. this idea,

  1236. yeah,

  1237. it's going

  1238. to be me

  1239. because I'm

  1240. a Pharisee.

  1241. And Jesus

  1242. says,

  1243. no,

  1244. you're not

  1245. listening.

  1246. You have

  1247. ears,

  1248. but you're

  1249. not hearing

  1250. me.

  1251. You have

  1252. eyes,

  1253. but you're

  1254. not seeing

  1255. what I'm

  1256. doing.

  1257. And he

  1258. calls them

  1259. on the

  1260. table.

  1261. You see,

  1262. the kingdom

  1263. of God is

  1264. not an

  1265. entitlement.

  1266. just because

  1267. I'm a

  1268. Baptist,

  1269. just because

  1270. I have a

  1271. Christian

  1272. faith,

  1273. it's not

  1274. about

  1275. entitlement,

  1276. it's about

  1277. saying yes

  1278. in my

  1279. faith to

  1280. God as

  1281. my Lord

  1282. and as

  1283. my Savior.

  1284. It's saying

  1285. yes to

  1286. his provision

  1287. of his

  1288. son for

  1289. the forgiveness

  1290. of my

  1291. sins.

  1292. that's

  1293. what allows

  1294. me to

  1295. sit at

  1296. the table.

  1297. That's

  1298. what allows

  1299. me to

  1300. come into

  1301. the banquet

  1302. room that

  1303. God has.

  1304. All through

  1305. this parable

  1306. that Pastor

  1307. Bo's been

  1308. leading us

  1309. through this

  1310. series,

  1311. he's asked

  1312. us to

  1313. think about

  1314. three questions.

  1315. What does

  1316. this parable

  1317. teach me

  1318. about God?

  1319. Where do

  1320. I see

  1321. myself in

  1322. this parable?

  1323. And then

  1324. lastly,

  1325. how does

  1326. this change

  1327. the way I

  1328. view the

  1329. world and

  1330. the way I

  1331. live?

  1332. So here

  1333. are the

  1334. things that

  1335. stood out

  1336. for me as

  1337. I think

  1338. about those

  1339. questions.

  1340. One,

  1341. God's

  1342. invitation is

  1343. for everyone.

  1344. God's

  1345. invitation into

  1346. a relationship

  1347. with him is

  1348. not limited

  1349. by our

  1350. status.

  1351. It's not

  1352. limited whether

  1353. we're rich or

  1354. whether we're

  1355. poor.

  1356. It's not

  1357. limited whether

  1358. we're on the

  1359. invite list or

  1360. the uninvited

  1361. list.

  1362. We are

  1363. invited by

  1364. God because

  1365. we are

  1366. created by

  1367. God from

  1368. the very

  1369. beginning.

  1370. We all

  1371. have the

  1372. opportunity to

  1373. either accept

  1374. or reject

  1375. that invitation.

  1376. But God's

  1377. invitation is

  1378. for everyone.

  1379. Excuses will

  1380. keep you from

  1381. the presence of

  1382. God.

  1383. I've had

  1384. excuses in

  1385. my life where

  1386. God through

  1387. his Holy

  1388. Spirit has

  1389. prompted me

  1390. to speak,

  1391. to say,

  1392. to do.

  1393. And I

  1394. came up with

  1395. an excuse.

  1396. And you

  1397. know what

  1398. happened?

  1399. I missed

  1400. the blessing

  1401. that would

  1402. have happened

  1403. if I would

  1404. have said

  1405. yes.

  1406. By saying

  1407. no to a

  1408. simple word

  1409. or expression

  1410. from God,

  1411. I didn't

  1412. get to receive

  1413. the blessing.

  1414. See,

  1415. excuses keep

  1416. us out of

  1417. the presence

  1418. of God.

  1419. Excuses

  1420. keep us

  1421. from joining

  1422. God in

  1423. what God

  1424. is doing.

  1425. God is

  1426. always at

  1427. work around

  1428. us.

  1429. It doesn't

  1430. matter what's

  1431. going on.

  1432. God is

  1433. always at

  1434. work.

  1435. my wife

  1436. and I

  1437. went out

  1438. and got

  1439. something to

  1440. eat the

  1441. other night

  1442. and we

  1443. sat at

  1444. this table

  1445. and we

  1446. were like,

  1447. oh man,

  1448. ain't no

  1449. practice going

  1450. on here.

  1451. And man,

  1452. I felt like

  1453. claustrophobic

  1454. even if it

  1455. was no

  1456. COVID.

  1457. And hearing

  1458. this conversation

  1459. going on at

  1460. the table

  1461. behind me,

  1462. I'm like,

  1463. wow.

  1464. And then

  1465. Trish and I

  1466. were having

  1467. a conversation

  1468. about,

  1469. you know,

  1470. what does

  1471. God call

  1472. us to do

  1473. in moments

  1474. like this?

  1475. And then

  1476. all of

  1477. a sudden

  1478. that

  1479. conversation

  1480. took a

  1481. turn.

  1482. And it

  1483. went from

  1484. an earthly

  1485. mindset to

  1486. all of a

  1487. sudden God

  1488. entered into

  1489. the conversation.

  1490. And one

  1491. person at the

  1492. table was

  1493. asking him,

  1494. when's the last

  1495. time you've

  1496. been to

  1497. church?

  1498. And that

  1499. opened the

  1500. door to

  1501. that person's

  1502. thought of

  1503. God,

  1504. that person's

  1505. thought of

  1506. Jesus.

  1507. And it

  1508. was on and

  1509. on and

  1510. on.

  1511. And I

  1512. was like,

  1513. wow,

  1514. that took

  1515. a turn.

  1516. But in

  1517. that moment,

  1518. Trish and I

  1519. were saying,

  1520. what do we

  1521. do?

  1522. And in

  1523. that moment,

  1524. God says,

  1525. I'm going to

  1526. change this

  1527. conversation.

  1528. And I'm

  1529. going to give

  1530. you an

  1531. opportunity to

  1532. do something.

  1533. And I'll

  1534. be honest

  1535. with you.

  1536. In all my

  1537. life as a

  1538. Christian and

  1539. a minister,

  1540. I have never

  1541. done this.

  1542. I wrote

  1543. my name and

  1544. my church and

  1545. my phone

  1546. number on

  1547. my receipt.

  1548. And I

  1549. went to

  1550. their table

  1551. when I

  1552. left and

  1553. I said,

  1554. hey,

  1555. don't mean

  1556. to eavesdrop.

  1557. They started

  1558. to laugh because

  1559. they knew the

  1560. conversation was

  1561. pretty loud.

  1562. And the person

  1563. says,

  1564. you just

  1565. happened to

  1566. be sitting

  1567. near a

  1568. pastor tonight.

  1569. And that

  1570. guy started

  1571. to laugh.

  1572. And I

  1573. heard him

  1574. laugh as I

  1575. laid that

  1576. paper down

  1577. and walked

  1578. away.

  1579. But God

  1580. spoke pretty

  1581. clearly.

  1582. He spoke

  1583. even clearly

  1584. through my

  1585. wife.

  1586. He said,

  1587. what are you

  1588. going to

  1589. do?

  1590. But God

  1591. was in

  1592. that

  1593. moment

  1594. and I

  1595. stepped

  1596. forward.

  1597. What's

  1598. going to

  1599. come of

  1600. it?

  1601. I have

  1602. no idea.

  1603. But in

  1604. that moment

  1605. whatever

  1606. seed that

  1607. God called

  1608. me to

  1609. do,

  1610. I did.

  1611. Thankfully

  1612. I didn't

  1613. come up

  1614. with an

  1615. excuse that

  1616. I needed

  1617. to get

  1618. out of

  1619. the

  1620. restaurant.

  1621. But I

  1622. enjoyed an

  1623. opportunity to

  1624. be in the

  1625. presence of

  1626. God,

  1627. however God

  1628. chooses to

  1629. use that

  1630. moment.

  1631. but most

  1632. importantly

  1633. constant

  1634. excuses

  1635. will lead

  1636. you to

  1637. an eternity

  1638. without

  1639. God.

  1640. Hear me

  1641. out now.

  1642. Constant

  1643. excuses

  1644. will leave

  1645. you in

  1646. an eternity

  1647. without

  1648. God.

  1649. Because there

  1650. will come a

  1651. day when you

  1652. say no,

  1653. when you

  1654. come up with

  1655. another excuse

  1656. will be the

  1657. last opportunity

  1658. you have.

  1659. You and I

  1660. do not know

  1661. the day or

  1662. the time in

  1663. which we're

  1664. called to

  1665. our eternal

  1666. existence.

  1667. That existence

  1668. is either in

  1669. the presence of

  1670. God as we

  1671. see scripture

  1672. talk about

  1673. heaven,

  1674. or it is in

  1675. an eternal

  1676. existence away

  1677. from God,

  1678. apart from

  1679. God,

  1680. what we see

  1681. in scripture

  1682. is called

  1683. hell.

  1684. We don't

  1685. know the

  1686. day or the

  1687. time,

  1688. but our

  1689. opportunity for

  1690. excuses will

  1691. run out by

  1692. our opportunity

  1693. to be able

  1694. to say

  1695. yes and

  1696. to step

  1697. into a

  1698. relationship

  1699. with the

  1700. Lord who

  1701. created you

  1702. and who

  1703. loves you.

  1704. We don't

  1705. know how

  1706. long that

  1707. will be.

  1708. The other

  1709. thing that I

  1710. see here is

  1711. God doesn't

  1712. have limited

  1713. seating.

  1714. God's invitation

  1715. is for everyone,

  1716. but also God

  1717. doesn't have

  1718. limited seating.

  1719. There's always

  1720. a chair at

  1721. the table.

  1722. Somebody fills

  1723. up that chair,

  1724. guess what?

  1725. Another one's

  1726. going to pop

  1727. up.

  1728. There's

  1729. always a

  1730. seat at

  1731. the table

  1732. with God

  1733. in the

  1734. presence of

  1735. God.

  1736. And that

  1737. is the

  1738. beauty of

  1739. having a

  1740. relationship

  1741. with God.

  1742. That is

  1743. the beauty

  1744. of you

  1745. and I

  1746. as believers.

  1747. We have

  1748. the opportunity

  1749. not only to

  1750. receive the

  1751. invitation,

  1752. but to also

  1753. extend the

  1754. invitation to

  1755. others.

  1756. We have the

  1757. opportunity to

  1758. allow God

  1759. to be spoken

  1760. of.

  1761. The church I

  1762. grew up in,

  1763. I was a

  1764. student ministry

  1765. intern, me and

  1766. another guy.

  1767. And each

  1768. week we had

  1769. to sit with

  1770. our youth

  1771. pastor, our

  1772. boss, and

  1773. basically it was

  1774. a time of

  1775. discipleship where

  1776. he poured into

  1777. us and he

  1778. challenged us.

  1779. And we

  1780. happened to be

  1781. talking about

  1782. sharing our

  1783. faith that day

  1784. and he simply

  1785. looked at me

  1786. and he said,

  1787. David, you

  1788. know what

  1789. your problem

  1790. is?

  1791. He said,

  1792. you think you've

  1793. got to begin

  1794. the conversation

  1795. of salvation and

  1796. you've got to

  1797. finish it at the

  1798. finish line and

  1799. see that person

  1800. come to know

  1801. the Lord.

  1802. He said,

  1803. that becomes a

  1804. stumbling block

  1805. for you.

  1806. He says,

  1807. Dave, you've

  1808. got to look for

  1809. an opportunity

  1810. and a way just

  1811. to bring God

  1812. up in the

  1813. conversation and

  1814. let God do

  1815. the rest.

  1816. And over 30

  1817. plus years that

  1818. has stuck with

  1819. me.

  1820. That God just

  1821. wants me to

  1822. drop a seed.

  1823. God just wants

  1824. me to bring his

  1825. name up in the

  1826. conversation,

  1827. however that can

  1828. happen.

  1829. You're having a

  1830. conversation with

  1831. a friend and

  1832. maybe they're

  1833. going through

  1834. something and you

  1835. simply say,

  1836. I'm going to

  1837. pray for you.

  1838. Most people know

  1839. that when you're

  1840. talking about

  1841. prayer, you're

  1842. talking about

  1843. going to God

  1844. regardless of

  1845. who they are in

  1846. their faith and

  1847. their walk or

  1848. what they know

  1849. of God or

  1850. not.

  1851. When you say

  1852. prayer, they

  1853. kind of have an

  1854. idea of what

  1855. you're talking

  1856. about.

  1857. You and I

  1858. look for ways

  1859. and opportunities

  1860. to bring God

  1861. up in the

  1862. conversation.

  1863. You know,

  1864. one of the

  1865. simplest things

  1866. for you and I

  1867. to do as

  1868. believers is to

  1869. invite somebody

  1870. to worship.

  1871. It's really

  1872. that simple.

  1873. Hey, you

  1874. come worship

  1875. with me?

  1876. Let God do

  1877. the rest.

  1878. God never

  1879. said he

  1880. wouldn't.

  1881. God just

  1882. wants you and

  1883. I to be

  1884. obedient.

  1885. He's going to

  1886. do the rest.

  1887. What about

  1888. inviting somebody

  1889. to your small

  1890. group?

  1891. Hey, we're

  1892. getting together.

  1893. Please come.

  1894. You know, we

  1895. do this Bible

  1896. study together.

  1897. Come check it

  1898. out.

  1899. There's no

  1900. pressure there.

  1901. If they

  1902. don't come,

  1903. they don't

  1904. come.

  1905. But if they

  1906. do, it has a

  1907. high probability

  1908. of being a

  1909. moment in their

  1910. life that they

  1911. come to know

  1912. the Lord or

  1913. begin the

  1914. process of

  1915. becoming to

  1916. know the Lord

  1917. as their

  1918. personal Lord

  1919. and Savior

  1920. by a simple

  1921. invitation.

  1922. What are you

  1923. going to do

  1924. with your

  1925. invitation?

  1926. What have you

  1927. done with your

  1928. invitation to

  1929. come to know

  1930. the Lord as

  1931. your Lord and

  1932. Savior?

  1933. I look around

  1934. this room and

  1935. I know several

  1936. of you have

  1937. stepped through

  1938. and said yes

  1939. to Jesus'

  1940. invitation to

  1941. coming to

  1942. know him as

  1943. your Lord and

  1944. Savior.

  1945. Others, I do

  1946. not know that

  1947. answer for you.

  1948. What are you

  1949. going to do

  1950. with that

  1951. invitation?

  1952. You see, the

  1953. Pharisees at

  1954. lunch believed

  1955. because of

  1956. their Hebrew

  1957. DNA, they

  1958. would be in

  1959. the kingdom

  1960. of God.

  1961. There's many

  1962. who think today

  1963. because of their

  1964. religious or

  1965. denominational

  1966. affiliation that

  1967. they're granted

  1968. into the

  1969. kingdom of

  1970. God, but

  1971. none of that

  1972. is true.

  1973. We only get

  1974. to experience

  1975. eternity with

  1976. God when we

  1977. say yes to

  1978. God's invitation

  1979. to come into

  1980. relationship with

  1981. him through the

  1982. forgiveness of

  1983. our sins and

  1984. saying yes to

  1985. him as our

  1986. Lord and Savior.

  1987. God's invitation

  1988. is into a

  1989. relationship with

  1990. him, nothing

  1991. else.

  1992. a relationship

  1993. with God

  1994. the Father.

  1995. What will

  1996. you do with

  1997. your invitation

  1998. that God

  1999. gives you?

  2000. Lord, thank

  2001. you so much

  2002. for your

  2003. word.

  2004. It is a

  2005. constant of

  2006. how you

  2007. press into

  2008. our life.

  2009. It is a

  2010. constant in

  2011. how you

  2012. challenge us.

  2013. It is a

  2014. constant in

  2015. how you

  2016. lead us to

  2017. shift our

  2018. mindset, to

  2019. shift our

  2020. attitude and

  2021. our character.

  2022. Lord, any

  2023. time we open

  2024. up your

  2025. word, may

  2026. it not go

  2027. void in

  2028. how it

  2029. applies to

  2030. us, in

  2031. how you

  2032. desire for

  2033. us to

  2034. live it

  2035. out.

  2036. Lord, whoever

  2037. we need to

  2038. extend an

  2039. invitation into

  2040. relationship with

  2041. you, Lord,

  2042. give us the

  2043. strength to do

  2044. that.

  2045. Lord, remove

  2046. any barriers

  2047. that may be in

  2048. the way from

  2049. us doing that,

  2050. whatever the

  2051. case might be,

  2052. Lord.

  2053. Lord, help
