  1. Hi, and welcome to the Willow Ridge Church weekly podcast.

  2. This is where you can find audio for our current and past sermons.

  3. We hope that you enjoy this week's installment, and be sure to check back next week to hear

  4. the latest message.

  5. Thanks for listening.

  6. Well, good morning.

  7. Glad that you are here with us.

  8. It is cold and wet and nasty outside, but glad that you guys are gathered in here today

  9. with us.

  10. And if you're online, thank you for joining us as well.

  11. If you've got your Bibles, go ahead and open them up to Luke chapter 2, as we're going to

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  12. talk about the birth of Christ today.

  13. As you turn there, I want to remind you, we have the announcements to place.

  14. I want to remind you of a couple of announcements.

  15. The first one is our Christmas Eve service.

  16. We will be having a Christmas Eve service.

  17. This is the first Christmas Eve service that we've had in a COVID world, right?

  18. We're kind of getting used to how we can navigate through our normal Sunday mornings, but this

  19. is going to be different for us.

  20. And so we're doing some things different.

  21. We're going to have, instead of one combined Christmas Eve service, we're going to have

  22. it at 4 and 515.

  23. Now, if you're planning on attending here with us on campus, here's what we need from you.

  24. Please go and register, okay?

  25. Normally, that's the largest attended service that we have of the year, as far as everyone

  26. being face-to-face.

  27. And we hope we can accommodate everyone by doing two services.

  28. And the only way that we can ensure that and that we can know what we're going to have

  29. is for you to come and register.

  30. So please do.

  31. Please still.

  32. We've had people ask, can we invite people?

  33. Can we bring our friends and our family with us?

  34. Absolutely.

  35. Just register them with you, and we'll get everybody taken care of and get y'all there.

  36. All right.

  37. So if you're going to watch us online, we are going to stream the 515 service.

  38. And so if you're staying at home still, or if you can't make it that day, then please

  39. join us online.

  40. And we will be taking the Lord's Supper together.

  41. So if you're going to be watching, then please make sure that you have that and have it all

  42. taken care of.

  43. And so we'll worship together that way.

  44. Also, at the end of the service today, Pastor Dave's going to come up on stage and take us

  45. into our business meeting, where we will vote on the budget and the trustees.

  46. And so after the last song, please don't start heading out.

  47. You want to make sure that you're around for that.

  48. So I want to ask you guys a question as we get started today.

  49. When was the last time someone humbled you?

  50. Think there was a moment where you thought something of yourself, and someone through what

  51. they did or what they said humbled you a little bit.

  52. Maybe they humbled you a lot.

  53. I want you to think about that.

  54. For me, the last one that I can remember, I've got to think all the way back to yesterday.

  55. All right?

  56. Yesterday, we got together with Aaron's family for Christmas.

  57. We typically get together the Saturday before Christmas with them.

  58. And so it's Aaron's mom and dad, and her brother, his wife, and their daughter, and our

  59. crew are there.

  60. And so we're there.

  61. And Lily, that's my seven-year-old niece.

  62. Every time we're around each other, we like to spend time together and have some really

  63. good conversations.

  64. And I like to pick at her a little bit, right?

  65. Like that's the relationship that we have.

  66. I don't even really call her by her name.

  67. I just call her Felicia.

  68. And so that's the relationship that we have.

  69. And so we're sitting there yesterday, and we're talking about school.

  70. And we're having lots of conversations about school.

  71. And she begins to tell me about her boyfriend.

  72. Now, now she's seven, okay?

  73. And she's telling me about her boyfriend at school, which you can ask Emma.

  74. I take a stand on that.

  75. I tell Emma all the time.

  76. She's allowed to start dating three days after I'm dead, right?

  77. That's when she can start.

  78. Let the body get good and cold and in the ground, sweetie.

  79. And then you can start dating, all right?

  80. And so, but Lily tells me she has a boyfriend.

  81. And I begin to tell her that this is nonsense.

  82. Like you shouldn't have a boyfriend.

  83. And she begins to give me all the ins and outs of the drama that has taken place at her

  84. first grade Ben Lippin class, right?

  85. And so we're talking, having a good time about that.

  86. And I said, well, why do you like him?

  87. She's like, well, but I like him.

  88. Like, why do you like him?

  89. And she said, well, because he's cute.

  90. Okay, all right.

  91. And I said, well, I bet he's not as cute as me.

  92. She kind of looks at me like I'm crazy, which is probably accurate, right?

  93. And I said, Lily, do you think I'm cute?

  94. And she kind of gives me this look like I don't quite know how to answer this.

  95. And I said, well, let me ask you a different question.

  96. Do you think that your Uncle Bo, who loves you, who cares for you, who's brought gifts

  97. for you, do you think he's handsome?

  98. She looked at me and she goes, no, not really.

  99. To which my father-in-law, sitting on the opposite side of the room, says this.

  100. Here's the humility, right?

  101. Here's where I got humbled.

  102. He said, you got to love seven-year-olds.

  103. They speak the truth.

  104. Here's what he's saying, I'm ugly, right?

  105. Like my father-in-law affirmed that there in that moment.

  106. But there's like this humility that in that moment that she spoke something that maybe that

  107. I want to deny, but to establish what's there, right?

  108. So a lot of times when we think of humility or being humbled, like we think of taking someone

  109. who elevates themselves and knocking them down a few notches to get them back to where

  110. they are, right?

  111. Now, everything yesterday was in good fun and we got to laugh about it.

  112. But when we look at Scripture, it's got to be very clear and very evident to you.

  113. And this is going to really connect with us a lot.

  114. What we talked about last week is that God loves humility.

  115. It's a characteristic and a trait that we see throughout Scripture.

  116. And so what I want to do, I want to read very quickly.

  117. These aren't even going to be on the screen.

  118. There's, I think, nine verses from Scripture that show God's heart for the humble, that show

  119. God's heart for humility.

  120. So we're just going to go quickly, speed read through these.

  121. Psalm 18, 27.

  122. For you save a humble people, but the haughty eyes you bring down.

  123. Psalm 25, 9.

  124. He leads the humble in what is right and teaches the humble his way.

  125. Proverbs 3, 34.

  126. Toward the scoffers he is scornful, but to the humble he gives favor.

  127. James 4, 6.

  128. But he gives more grace, therefore it says, God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.

  129. Proverbs 11, 2.

  130. When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom.

  131. Proverbs 15, 33.

  132. The fear of the Lord is instruction in wisdom, and humility comes before honor.

  133. Matthew 18, 4.

  134. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

  135. In 1 Peter 5, 6.

  136. Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that at the proper time he may exalt you.

  137. So what we find in Scripture, and this is just a small sampling of when humility is used and

  138. described by God as an attribute that should be possessed by his people.

  139. Just in this sampling, we see that humility is connected to salvation, to guidance from God,

  140. to grace from God, to wisdom, to honor, and to greatness.

  141. So humility should be something that you and I can not only see in our life,

  142. but it is something that we are pursuing.

  143. Now, as we look through this, we started with it last week.

  144. As we look through this early birth narrative of Jesus Christ found in Scripture all the way back

  145. to Mary finding out that she'll be the mother of the Lord, to the song that she sings,

  146. we see that humility fills the pages of this narrative.

  147. And here's why I think this is so important.

  148. Go all the way back to our first week and remember that the setting in which, or I'm sorry,

  149. the audience into which Luke is writing.

  150. The Gospel of Luke and the Gospel Acts, both written by Luke, written to Theophilus.

  151. And he tells Theophilus that he is writing them so that he may know Jesus, that he's heard.

  152. Like Theophilus, this isn't his first introduction to Jesus, but that he's heard about Jesus,

  153. but that his friend Luke is writing these things to him in order to confirm in him accurate belief.

  154. And so as Luke is telling this narrative to someone that he deeply loves,

  155. woven into this under God's inspiration is this concept of humility.

  156. All right, so what is humility?

  157. Because humility has got to be different than you and I seeking to knock each other down a peg,

  158. to picking at each other.

  159. And I'll say this, that spiritually speaking, concerning Scripture in the heart of God is this,

  160. that the heart of humility is seeing yourself accurately.

  161. Like, humility is not thinking less of yourself, okay?

  162. Humility is not beating yourself up.

  163. Humility is not this punishment that you and I have to take on.

  164. Humility is not a sign of weakness, all right?

  165. Jesus is humble.

  166. Jesus has lived his life, embraced humility.

  167. But humility is seeing yourself accurately, right?

  168. And that's kind of hard for us to do sometimes.

  169. And as we read through this morning, the first part of chapter 2,

  170. what I want us to see is the humility that's found in this story.

  171. So we'll start reading in verse 1.

  172. It says,

  173. In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus,

  174. that all the world should be registered.

  175. And this was the first registration when Canarius was governor of Syria.

  176. And all went to be registered, each to his own town.

  177. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth,

  178. to Judea, the city of David, which is called Bethlehem,

  179. because he was of the house and lineage of David,

  180. to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.

  181. And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth.

  182. And she gave birth to her firstborn son,

  183. and wrapped him in swaddling cloths,

  184. and locked him in the manger,

  185. because there was no place for them in the inn.

  186. And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field,

  187. keeping watch over their flock by night.

  188. And the angel of the Lord appeared to them,

  189. and the glory of the Lord shone around them.

  190. And they were filled with great fear.

  191. And the angel said to them,

  192. Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy

  193. that will be for all people.

  194. For unto you is born this day in the city of David

  195. a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

  196. And this will be a sign for you.

  197. You will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and line in a manger.

  198. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of heavenly hosts,

  199. praising God and saying,

  200. Glory to God in the highest,

  201. and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased.

  202. And when the angel went away from them into heaven,

  203. the shepherds said to one another,

  204. Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened,

  205. which the Lord has made known to us.

  206. And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph and the baby lying in a manger.

  207. And when they saw it,

  208. they made known the saying that they had been told them concerning this child.

  209. And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them.

  210. But Mary treasured up all these things,

  211. pondering them in her heart.

  212. And the shepherds returned,

  213. glorifying and praising God

  214. for all they had heard and seen

  215. as it had been told to them.

  216. And what I want us to do in this story that,

  217. let's be honest, for many of us,

  218. we've heard multiple times.

  219. For many of us, the story, the narrative,

  220. we can find in our nativity scene

  221. that's placed at our house this time of year.

  222. We can see the story told in a Charlie Brown cartoon.

  223. And what I want us to see,

  224. what I want us to focus in on

  225. is the humility in the story.

  226. And then what is the humility drawing us toward?

  227. What does the humility point us toward?

  228. And so the first thing that I want us to look at

  229. are the places.

  230. The places that we find in this story.

  231. Yesterday, Erin and I on our drive there,

  232. I just asked her.

  233. I said, you know,

  234. I've really been thinking about this this week

  235. as we've been seeing different things

  236. that are going on in the news.

  237. She and I are listening to a couple of podcasts

  238. that are dealing with different areas in Syria.

  239. and what's happening there.

  240. And I said, do you ever just wonder why

  241. God in his sovereignty,

  242. the creator of the world,

  243. who knows every mountain peak in every valley,

  244. who knows every square inch of this planet,

  245. that why God chose this area of the world

  246. for all of this to take place

  247. and for all of this to happen, right?

  248. From Genesis all the way through

  249. when we are associated with biblical areas, right?

  250. It's been areas marked of turmoil

  251. and fighting and strife and struggle

  252. time and time again

  253. that why in the world

  254. would God choose these places

  255. in order to reveal himself, right?

  256. We just read in this passage of scripture

  257. within it the connection to Syria that's there.

  258. And it got me even thinking more

  259. of the locations in the places now

  260. because they all matter.

  261. They're not chosen by random circumstance

  262. that God in his purpose,

  263. that God in his time,

  264. that God in his will made these choices.

  265. And for us,

  266. we hear these names in scripture a lot,

  267. but we don't understand the impact of what's there

  268. because we're not from that time,

  269. we're not from that place,

  270. and so you don't know what it's like

  271. until you walk through that

  272. and you get to experience that.

  273. Well, the first place that we hear in this

  274. that helps us understand the story is Nazareth,

  275. that this is where they're going to come from

  276. to Bethlehem.

  277. This is where Jesus is going to live

  278. much of his childhood.

  279. It's why he's referred to as Jesus of Nazareth.

  280. So let's talk about this place for just a second.

  281. Let me describe it this way.

  282. Nazareth is kind of the tough area.

  283. Nazareth is the difficult area.

  284. Nazareth is the hard to live in area.

  285. Like Nazareth is not a place

  286. where people of influence come from there.

  287. Nazareth would never be a place

  288. that you would go to or vacation.

  289. It would probably be a place

  290. where you could get land really cheap

  291. for a really good reason

  292. because you can't give it away

  293. kind of Nazareth place.

  294. This is where we find

  295. and this is where Jesus

  296. is going to be associated with.

  297. So I want us to think about this.

  298. As Jesus is walking

  299. and as Jesus is being identified

  300. in all of the sovereignty

  301. of all of what God could have chosen,

  302. of where God could have placed him,

  303. he labeled him with this type

  304. of rough place

  305. where he would be from

  306. that people would associate him with.

  307. He was from the wrong side of the tracks,

  308. the bad side of town.

  309. And this is where we find

  310. that Jesus will be from.

  311. But God in his sovereignty

  312. didn't have him born there.

  313. Instead, he had him born in Bethlehem.

  314. And this was intentional by God

  315. as revealed in Micah 5 too

  316. when it's declared

  317. that this is where the Messiah

  318. will come from.

  319. Now, Bethlehem is different

  320. than Nazareth.

  321. It's got some importance.

  322. You hear the name

  323. and it's associated with royalty.

  324. Bethlehem is called

  325. the city of David for a reason.

  326. It's where great King David,

  327. the one who slayed Goliath,

  328. the father of Solomon,

  329. it was where he would be anointed king.

  330. It's where Ruth and Boaz

  331. would call home.

  332. So when you hear Bethlehem,

  333. you can think back

  334. to some Old Testament days

  335. of the royalty

  336. and of notable people

  337. from Scripture who was there.

  338. It's an important known city.

  339. And so if Jesus is going to be

  340. from Nazareth,

  341. then at least God, right,

  342. gives him some notability,

  343. some notoriety,

  344. and has him born

  345. in this noble town.

  346. But let's begin to look

  347. at the pieces

  348. as God orchestrates this, right?

  349. So God had Joseph born

  350. in the lineage

  351. that would bring them

  352. through Bethlehem

  353. in order to make this happen.

  354. God willed and purposed Mary

  355. to get engaged to Joseph.

  356. And then through something else

  357. that we can talk about

  358. at a much different time

  359. as God even works

  360. and orchestrates

  361. in the hearts

  362. and in the lives

  363. of non-believers,

  364. takes a pagan ruler

  365. and Caesar Augustus

  366. and has him declared

  367. that the whole world, right,

  368. not just a group of people,

  369. but God says,

  370. we're going to declare

  371. that the whole world

  372. must be registered

  373. so that they have to journey

  374. into this town

  375. where I said

  376. that Jesus would be born.

  377. And so we look at that

  378. and we're kind of blown away.

  379. Like, wow,

  380. like God has handled

  381. all of these details.

  382. God has worked this all out

  383. that God knew

  384. that this person

  385. needed to be empowered

  386. to make this decision

  387. that they would have

  388. to come here

  389. and do this thing

  390. so that Micah 5, 2

  391. could be fulfilled.

  392. But if you know the story,

  393. you know there's one part

  394. in the logic

  395. of working everything out

  396. that's been left out.

  397. There's no place for them.

  398. So why would it be

  399. that God could purpose

  400. and will

  401. and to set in place

  402. in his sovereignty

  403. that this carpenter man

  404. from this town

  405. through this lineage

  406. would make this journey

  407. with his wife

  408. and they would head

  409. into this town

  410. so that the prophecy

  411. could be fulfilled

  412. but God missed out

  413. on the detail

  414. to make sure

  415. that there was just

  416. one room open

  417. at the inn.

  418. And here's the whole point

  419. of the humility.

  420. God never missed it.

  421. God never missed it.

  422. Because in the telling

  423. of the narrative

  424. and the humility

  425. that is found

  426. that the Savior

  427. of the world,

  428. the Messiah,

  429. the King

  430. would be born

  431. in this town

  432. but not in a hospital,

  433. not in an inn,

  434. not in a home

  435. but that he would be born

  436. in a cave

  437. where livestock

  438. were kept.

  439. And so in the filth

  440. and in the dirt

  441. and in the nastiness

  442. that was there

  443. and the smells

  444. is where Jesus

  445. would be born.

  446. And we continue

  447. to see

  448. the humility.

  449. You see,

  450. Jesus was not going

  451. to be a man

  452. from Jerusalem

  453. born in Rome

  454. that would take place

  455. in a palace.

  456. But he would be

  457. this little boy

  458. from Nazareth

  459. who his parents

  460. would have to journey

  461. and be told,

  462. no,

  463. you're not valuable

  464. enough

  465. for someone else

  466. to be moved out.

  467. Instead,

  468. let's move you

  469. where the animals live.

  470. and when you're born

  471. will place you

  472. literally

  473. in the trough

  474. that they eat from.

  475. It's in the very beginning

  476. of the narrative

  477. of the life of Christ

  478. and God's desire

  479. to bring about us

  480. a sense of humility.

  481. We see the places

  482. in which Jesus

  483. is going to be from,

  484. the places in which Jesus

  485. is going to be associated with

  486. or filled

  487. with humility.

  488. But it's not just

  489. the places,

  490. it's also the people.

  491. Talked about her

  492. last week, right?

  493. Mary,

  494. somewhere between the ages

  495. of 12 to 14 years old,

  496. little Jewish girl

  497. from nowhere,

  498. and she was chosen

  499. by God.

  500. She wasn't chosen

  501. by God

  502. because of the claim

  503. that she had.

  504. She wasn't chosen

  505. by God

  506. because people said,

  507. you see this girl,

  508. we can follow her,

  509. she's got great leadership.

  510. She was chosen

  511. by God

  512. because of her humility

  513. and obedience

  514. because she lived

  515. her life

  516. to not do

  517. what she wanted,

  518. not to assert herself

  519. to be the strong personality,

  520. but she lived her life

  521. in humility

  522. out of obedience.

  523. And so that's

  524. the mother of God.

  525. But within this,

  526. there's also

  527. the earthly father,

  528. Joseph.

  529. Now,

  530. we don't know

  531. a lot about Joseph,

  532. all right?

  533. Here's what we do know,

  534. that he's a carpenter.

  535. We don't know

  536. if he's a successful carpenter

  537. or not a successful carpenter,

  538. but that's what he does

  539. for a living,

  540. which means this.

  541. He's not in politics.

  542. He's not in power.

  543. He doesn't have authority

  544. and he doesn't have influence.

  545. And so in the lineage

  546. that you would find

  547. from King David,

  548. this has not been

  549. passed down to him.

  550. This is not

  551. where we see Joseph.

  552. So the earthly parents

  553. of Jesus

  554. are just going to be

  555. your regular,

  556. everyday,

  557. average people.

  558. And this is who God

  559. chooses.

  560. The humble people

  561. that will come

  562. in their obedience

  563. to be the earthly

  564. parents of Jesus.

  565. But at least

  566. the audience,

  567. right?

  568. Like God could do

  569. something different

  570. in the audience.

  571. God could choose

  572. kings and queens

  573. that night

  574. to come celebrate.

  575. God could choose

  576. religious leaders

  577. in this narrative

  578. to be able to

  579. point us to.

  580. God could choose

  581. people of power

  582. and people of authority.

  583. but he chooses

  584. shepherds.

  585. Shepherds.

  586. Now,

  587. shepherds live

  588. their life

  589. basically by camping.

  590. All right?

  591. Now,

  592. my family,

  593. we love to camp.

  594. Here's what I want

  595. to tell you guys

  596. about camping.

  597. We got any campers

  598. in here?

  599. Raise your hand

  600. if you like to camp.

  601. All right?

  602. Here's what I want

  603. to tell you

  604. about those of us

  605. who like to camp.

  606. When you go camping,

  607. there's something

  608. that happens

  609. between here

  610. and there.

  611. It's a level

  612. of you stop caring

  613. what you're going

  614. to look like

  615. for as long

  616. as you camp,

  617. right?

  618. Like everybody's camping

  619. and you're like,

  620. yeah,

  621. that's kind of

  622. what we do,

  623. right?

  624. Like you get there

  625. and you go camping.

  626. Now,

  627. your depth of camping

  628. will affect that greatly,

  629. right?

  630. So if you go tent camping,

  631. like I can sometimes

  632. convince my wife

  633. to go do,

  634. right?

  635. Very quickly,

  636. it's like we're just

  637. going to be covered

  638. in dirt

  639. and bug bites

  640. for the next two

  641. or three days,

  642. right?

  643. And that's what

  644. it's going to be.

  645. Now,

  646. when we go glamping

  647. in the big old camper

  648. where there's showers

  649. and all that,

  650. that kind of looks

  651. a little different.

  652. But if you're going

  653. to camp,

  654. you kind of,

  655. it's not the same thing

  656. as staying at the resort

  657. or going on the cruise ship,

  658. right?

  659. Like leave those clothes away.

  660. So you look a little rougher

  661. when you get back,

  662. at least I am.

  663. The thing that I like to do

  664. when we get back camping

  665. is I like to take

  666. the longest shower

  667. of the year for me,

  668. right?

  669. I just let it all

  670. get off of me.

  671. Now,

  672. here's the deal.

  673. Shepherds live

  674. their whole life camping.

  675. This is who they are.

  676. They were dirty.

  677. They smelled bad.

  678. They live nomadic lives.

  679. And like when I say

  680. camping for them,

  681. it would be

  682. they kept their cloak

  683. with them.

  684. They laid their head

  685. down on the rock.

  686. They laid in the same area

  687. where their animals were.

  688. they began to smell like them

  689. and this is the life

  690. that they lived.

  691. They typically didn't have families.

  692. They typically were strangers

  693. out in the wilderness.

  694. And most times,

  695. I read a guy

  696. that just said

  697. the politest way

  698. that it could be

  699. that basically shepherds

  700. were not known

  701. for what he called

  702. their depth

  703. of thinking abilities,

  704. right?

  705. Like this is who they are.

  706. But God

  707. in his sovereignty

  708. who could have chosen

  709. anyone

  710. on that first

  711. Christmas night

  712. sends them.

  713. The outcast.

  714. The least of these.

  715. And so what we see

  716. in this Christmas story

  717. is humble people

  718. from humble places

  719. and this is where

  720. God brings in

  721. the Savior

  722. of the world.

  723. Not born

  724. to a virgin queen,

  725. to a father

  726. who rules nations,

  727. to be celebrated

  728. by those

  729. who live in power,

  730. but humble people

  731. in humble places.

  732. So the question

  733. that I have

  734. for us this morning

  735. is why?

  736. Why?

  737. God wrote the narrative.

  738. God set it all

  739. into place.

  740. God in his writing

  741. of history

  742. chose this setting

  743. for the Messiah

  744. to come.

  745. Why?

  746. Here's the only thing

  747. that I can come to

  748. because it fits

  749. the message.

  750. It fits the message

  751. that God

  752. who created

  753. and who wrote

  754. the story

  755. with humble people

  756. in humble places

  757. is calling

  758. to himself

  759. humble people

  760. from humble places

  761. to respond to him

  762. because what he needs

  763. is people

  764. who have

  765. an accurate

  766. picture

  767. of themselves.

  768. Mary knew

  769. who she was.

  770. You heard it

  771. in her song.

  772. Joseph knew

  773. who he was.

  774. He stood

  775. alongside Mary

  776. the shepherds

  777. knew what they

  778. were

  779. and they were

  780. willing to obey

  781. that the message

  782. of God

  783. drawing

  784. humble hearts

  785. to himself.

  786. Look at the

  787. declaration

  788. that the angel

  789. gives

  790. to him

  791. in Luke 2

    Luke 2:10

  792. verse 10.

  793. And the angel

  794. said to them

  795. fear not

  796. for behold

  797. I bring you

  798. good news

  799. of great joy

  800. that will be

  801. for all people.

  802. for unto you

  803. is born

  804. this day

  805. in the city

  806. of David

  807. a savior

  808. who is

  809. Christ

  810. the Lord.

  811. That from the

  812. very first

  813. proclamation

  814. of what's

  815. publicly

  816. going to be

  817. made known

  818. that the hope

  819. of Jesus

  820. who comes

  821. and what

  822. he is coming

  823. to do

  824. Jesus is going

  825. to do a lot

  826. of things.

  827. Jesus is going

  828. to heal.

  829. Jesus is going

  830. to restore.

  831. Jesus is going

  832. to teach

  833. about relationships.

  834. Jesus is going

  835. to work through

  836. all of these

  837. things but that

  838. in and who

  839. he is

  840. he is

  841. from the very

  842. meaning

  843. of his name

  844. he is a savior.

  845. And so Jesus

  846. didn't come

  847. to make you

  848. and I feel

  849. better about

  850. who we are.

  851. Jesus didn't

  852. come to make

  853. us feel better

  854. about the bad

  855. decisions we've

  856. made.

  857. Jesus came

  858. because the

  859. world needed

  860. to be saved

  861. from themselves

  862. and only

  863. he can do

  864. it.

  865. As we begin

  866. to understand

  867. as we begin

  868. to process

  869. through an

  870. accurate picture

  871. of ourselves

  872. and God

  873. helps us do

  874. this.

  875. God doesn't

  876. say go be

  877. humble and

  878. not begin to

  879. birth within

  880. us the

  881. ability to

  882. see within

  883. ourselves who

  884. we are.

  885. the depravity

  886. that fills

  887. us the

  888. sin that

  889. consumes us

  890. and one of

  891. the most

  892. gracious things

  893. that God

  894. does is he

  895. gives us

  896. the law.

  897. Now growing

  898. up when you

  899. walked into

  900. the house

  901. which we

  902. lived in

  903. you walked

  904. into our

  905. front door

  906. and I'll

  907. never forget

  908. on the wall

  909. as you saw

  910. it as you

  911. were coming

  912. in my mom

  913. had ordered

  914. from the

  915. home interior

  916. company right

  917. this wooden

  918. brass

  919. declaration right

  920. of the ten

  921. commandments so

  922. that when we

  923. walked in

  924. that's what

  925. we saw on

  926. the wall

  927. and that's

  928. what marked

  929. us and for

  930. for so many

  931. people when

  932. they see the

  933. ten commandments

  934. what they see

  935. it as is a

  936. is a standard

  937. at which to

  938. live by and

  939. that by looking

  940. at that standard

  941. we can set the

  942. goal for

  943. ourselves of

  944. what we're

  945. supposed to do

  946. and what we're

  947. supposed to be

  948. and I don't

  949. want to take

  950. away from that

  951. right like

  952. like everything

  953. within there

  954. is the truth

  955. of god's word

  956. that we push

  957. at and as we

  958. pursue as to

  959. the power of

  960. the holy spirit

  961. he transforms

  962. that but have

  963. you ever taken

  964. an honest reading

  965. of the ten

  966. commandments and

  967. then compared

  968. yourself to it

  969. have you ever

  970. had an honest

  971. conversation within

  972. who you are by

  973. holding yourself

  974. up to the

  975. standard of god

  976. if you haven't

  977. let's do that

  978. real quick

  979. now I want

  980. to tell you

  981. I want to

  982. leave out some

  983. of the really

  984. bad stuff

  985. we're going to

  986. keep this g-rated

  987. for the audience

  988. today and I'm

  989. going to be a

  990. little gracious to

  991. us because I

  992. got to beat

  993. myself up this

  994. week by going

  995. through this

  996. we're going to

  997. kind of eliminate

  998. the first handful

  999. that deal with

  1000. idolatry not

  1001. that that's not

  1002. important but that

  1003. would take us way

  1004. too long to

  1005. navigate through

  1006. all that so

  1007. we're going to

  1008. pick back up a

  1009. little bit farther

  1010. down and kind

  1011. of work through

  1012. some of these

  1013. so I want to

  1014. ask you this

  1015. question oh and

  1016. by the way

  1017. we're going to

  1018. let your answers

  1019. be between you

  1020. and the lord

  1021. all right so

  1022. no showing of

  1023. hands or anything

  1024. like that all

  1025. right number

  1026. one have you

  1027. ever taken the

  1028. lord's name in

  1029. vain so let's

  1030. let's talk about

  1031. that for a second

  1032. keeping this

  1033. like I said a

  1034. little g-rated

  1035. so here's what

  1036. I want to say

  1037. here's what that

  1038. means have you

  1039. ever in a moment

  1040. through the words

  1041. that come out of

  1042. your mouth used

  1043. God or the name

  1044. Jesus flippantly

  1045. God I hope not

  1046. we say

  1047. Jesus not in the

  1048. context that we're

  1049. talking to him

  1050. and in those

  1051. moments we use it

  1052. in a way that

  1053. you're not bringing

  1054. glory the standard

  1055. says remember the

  1056. sabbath have you

  1057. ever taken what's

  1058. precious to God in

  1059. the time that he

  1060. longs to spend with

  1061. us and he used

  1062. it selfishly in a

  1063. time that's been

  1064. taken away from

  1065. him God's word

  1066. says and parents

  1067. if you're in here

  1068. you love this one

  1069. right I do honor

  1070. your father and

  1071. mother but let's

  1072. be honest God

  1073. never sets an age

  1074. limit on that so

  1075. I don't care if

  1076. you're one or

  1077. you're 100 God's

  1078. standard says honor

  1079. your father and

  1080. mother and have

  1081. you ever done or

  1082. said anything that

  1083. brought attack or

  1084. disgrace onto your

  1085. parents and this is

  1086. the standard that we

  1087. accept not just if

  1088. your parents are

  1089. believers do not

  1090. murder thinking well

  1091. I'm good at that

  1092. one but Jesus's words

  1093. are very clear have

  1094. you ever hated

  1095. someone have you

  1096. ever hated someone

  1097. says do not commit

  1098. adultery and we can

  1099. break this down

  1100. multiple ways but

  1101. we'll just kind of

  1102. go into at the

  1103. easiest way maybe

  1104. maybe the less

  1105. aggressive way and

  1106. say this do not

  1107. commit adultery what

  1108. does your thought life

  1109. look like if you're

  1110. married have you ever

  1111. wish that your spouse

1112. was a little bit like

  1113. someone you worked

  1114. with and your heart

1115. began to kind of like

1116. that aspect of them more

  1117. than the commitment to

  1118. them do not steal

1119. all right maybe we have

  1120. no bank robbers in

  1121. here that's good but

  1122. have you ever stolen

  1123. time from your

  1124. employer showed up

  1125. five minutes late and

  1126. then lied about it

  1127. have you ever taken

  1128. credit for something

  1129. that someone else has

  1130. done or maybe just

  1131. not refuted when

  1132. someone else praises

1133. you when you know you

1134. had nothing to do with

  1135. it have you ever

  1136. just fudged a little

  1137. bit on your taxes

  1138. right like you drop

1139. off that bag of nasty

  1140. tore up clothes at

  1141. Goodwill and they give

  1142. you the blank receipt

1143. and you come home and

  1144. now you've given like

1145. ten flat screen TVs to

1146. them like have you ever

  1147. done that

1148. Bible says do not bear

  1149. false witness

  1150. have you ever heard

  1151. information about

  1152. someone else that's

  1153. negative and you don't

  1154. know whether it's true

1155. or not but you repeated

  1156. it to someone else

  1157. I didn't know it's just

  1158. what I heard

  1159. do not covet

  1160. have you ever seen

  1161. something that someone

  1162. else has that you

  1163. don't have and you

  1164. felt more deserving to

1165. have it than they did

  1166. it's the standard

  1167. now here's the thing

  1168. scripture is clear

  1169. if you've only done

1170. one of these one time

1171. in your life just one

  1172. just one time then

  1173. you're guilty

  1174. you're guilty

  1175. you're guilty

  1176. and the standing

  1177. that we have

  1178. before God

  1179. says that we're

  1180. not worthy

  1181. of him

  1182. and so God

  1183. appears

  1184. in humble places

  1185. to humble people

  1186. to show us something

  1187. powerful

1188. that when we come to

  1189. him

  1190. it's not what we

  1191. can bring to him

  1192. it's not what we

  1193. can do

  1194. for him

  1195. that the heart

  1196. of the gospel

  1197. for you

  1198. and for me

  1199. says that we've

  1200. broken

  1201. and we've offended

  1202. God

  1203. more times

  1204. than we know

  1205. but that not only

  1206. that

  1207. but in

  1208. and of

  1209. ourselves

  1210. when we do

  1211. good

  1212. when we do

  1213. these things

  1214. and we say

  1215. but God

  1216. I can do

  1217. this

  1218. but God

  1219. I did

  1220. this

  1221. but God

  1222. I did

  1223. this

  1224. that God's word

  1225. says that our

  1226. righteousness

  1227. that comes from

  1228. within ourselves

  1229. of all that we

  1230. can muster

  1231. is like filthy

  1232. rags before him

  1233. and so what we

  1234. need

  1235. is exactly

  1236. what the angels

  1237. come to say

  1238. I love their first

  1239. two words

  1240. fear

  1241. not

  1242. right

  1243. sitting in this

  1244. room

  1245. watching online

  1246. is a bunch

  1247. of guilty

  1248. people

  1249. who all

  1250. deserve

  1251. wrath

  1252. who all

  1253. deserve

  1254. hell

  1255. but in the

  1256. proclamation

  1257. of all

  1258. that we've

  1259. done

  1260. the word

  1261. of God

  1262. comes before

  1263. us

  1264. and says

  1265. fear not

  1266. because I bring

  1267. good news

  1268. of the gospel

  1269. to you

  1270. and that as I

  1271. bring this

  1272. as I project

  1273. forth about

  1274. the savior

  1275. of the world

  1276. that there's a

  1277. positioning

  1278. found in God's

  1279. people

  1280. to receive it

  1281. and it's

  1282. not one

  1283. that says

  1284. look at me

  1285. it's not one

  1286. that says

  1287. well I deserve

  1288. to be saved

  1289. it's not one

  1290. that says

  1291. I know

  1292. it's one

  1293. that says

  1294. I bring

  1295. nothing to

  1296. you

  1297. but instead

  1298. you give

  1299. this to me

  1300. humility

  1301. an accurate

  1302. picture of

  1303. who we are

  1304. completely

  1305. lost without

  1306. Christ

  1307. and an

  1308. accurate picture

  1309. of who he

  1310. is

  1311. completely

  1312. holy

  1313. and just

  1314. and good

  1315. and loving

  1316. and so that's

  1317. why

  1318. God reveals

  1319. himself

  1320. to humble

  1321. people

  1322. in humble

  1323. places

  1324. because it

  1325. helps us

  1326. understand

  1327. the message

  1328. of the gospel

  1329. would you pray

  1330. with me

  1331. Lord we thank

  1332. you so much

  1333. for who you

  1334. are and for

  1335. what you've

  1336. done

  1337. your word

  1338. is very

  1339. clear

  1340. Lord

  1341. that you

  1342. have a

  1343. standard

  1344. that we

  1345. cannot

  1346. fulfill

  1347. that we

  1348. cannot

  1349. uphold

  1350. that we

  1351. cannot

  1352. see through

  1353. as much

  1354. as we

  1355. may try

  1356. to be

  1357. religious

  1358. as much

  1359. as we

  1360. may try

  1361. to be

  1362. good

  1363. we can

  1364. never

  1365. be

  1366. religious

  1367. enough

  1368. we can

  1369. never

  1370. be

  1371. good

  1372. enough

  1373. and so

  1374. Lord you

  1375. come to

  1376. us

  1377. to save

  1378. us

  1379. Lord those

  1380. who are

  1381. who are

  1382. saved

  1383. need to be

  1384. saved

  1385. because they

  1386. cannot save

  1387. themselves

  1388. and that's

  1389. where you

  1390. appear

  1391. and that's

  1392. where you

  1393. reveal

  1394. and that's

  1395. what you

  1396. show as

  1397. you draw

  1398. hearts

  1399. to yourself

  1400. because of

  1401. who you

  1402. are Lord

  1403. and what

  1404. you've

  1405. done

  1406. God I

  1407. pray that

  1408. this morning

  1409. if we

  1410. walked into

  1411. this room

  1412. with any

  1413. sense of

  1414. self-righteousness

  1415. if we walked

  1416. into here

  1417. with any

  1418. sense of

  1419. saying that

  1420. we deserve

  1421. anything

  1422. from you

  1423. anything

  1424. Lord can we

  1425. take that

  1426. part

  1427. of our

  1428. sinful

  1429. heart

  1430. and lay

  1431. it down

  1432. and repent

  1433. so that

  1434. we may

  1435. experience

  1436. the joy

  1437. and the

  1438. life that

  1439. comes from

  1440. you

  1441. may this

  1442. be our

  1443. posture

  1444. of every

  1445. day

  1446. of every

  1447. moment

  1448. of every

  1449. hour

  1450. of what

  1451. it means

  1452. to show

  1453. fear of

  1454. the Lord

  1455. humility

  1456. before the

  1457. Lord

  1458. who you

  1459. are

  1460. what you

  1461. done

  1462. so Lord

  1463. I thank

  1464. you that

  1465. you come

  1466. to

  1467. weak

  1468. dirty

  1469. outcast

  1470. shepherds

  1471. like us

  1472. and you

  1473. speak the

  1474. joy

  1475. of salvation

  1476. into our

  1477. lives

  1478. Jesus we

  1479. love you

  1480. we praise

  1481. you
