  1. Hi, and welcome to the Willow Ridge Church weekly podcast.

  2. This is where you can find audio for our current and past sermons.

  3. We hope that you enjoy this week's installment, and be sure to check back next week to hear

  4. the latest message.

  5. Thanks for listening.

  6. Good morning.

  7. Glad that you guys are joining us, whether you're here on campus with us or you're joining

  8. us online.

  9. You got a lot of announcements there, a lot of things are going on in the life of our

  10. church, and we're thankful that you guys are on that journey and participating with us.

  11. One of the things that I want to draw us all to, to kind of make note of, so it doesn't

  12. sneak up on you, right, is Easter is early this year.

  13. Easter is April 4th, the first Sunday in April.

  14. Usually it's a little bit later in April, so I don't want you to think, oh, we got a couple

  15. more weeks, when actually it's right here on us.

  16. So we're going to do something a little bit different for Easter here at Willow Ridge

  17. Church.

  18. I don't know about you, but I grew up in a tradition where we had a sunrise service.

  19. And so kind of beginning to think through, as we've been doing for all year, how we do services,

  20. looking at doing services differently.

  21. What we've decided to do as more and more people are coming back to our face-to-face gatherings

  22. here, is to provide a third service for Easter, all right?

  23. And so what we're going to do is provide a 730, and we're calling it like sunrise service.

  24. I know the sun's up before then, but that's as sunrise-y as Baptists get, right?

  25. So a 730 service.

  26. In that service, there will be a full family, everybody out there, no nursery provided.

  27. We're going to have some scaled back worship, acoustic worship that we're going to have,

  28. but just gathered outdoors, out on the patio to worship together.

  29. And then our 930 and 11 services will gather in here.

  30. We'll still stream the 11 o'clock services, but the 930 and 11 will gather.

  31. It's going to be more of a family service, meaning that we will provide nursery that day,

  32. but that is it.

  33. We're going to bring everybody in here together.

  34. So we are going to do Lord's Supper also for each of those three services.

  35. So we'd love to have you.

  36. So maybe you're joining us online because you're not comfortable with face-to-face and being

  37. in a building, but you would like to be with us.

  38. We would love to have you.

  39. And so you can come to that 730.

  40. Maybe you're like, I love face-to-face.

  41. I've been here since we reopened, but I want to try something different as well.

  42. Come join us for that early morning hour, right?

  43. I promise we'll have coffee available, right?

  44. Pastor Dave's going to have it waiting on us and ready to go.

  45. So 730, 930, and 11.

  46. Here's one favor that we need to ask so that we can make sure we have the right amount of

  47. seating is we're going to ask that everyone register on the church website for whichever

  48. service that you want to be a part of so that we can be ready and equipped for you to celebrate

  49. the fact that Jesus is risen.

  50. Well, it's been a year.

  51. It's been a long year.

  52. It's been a different year.

  53. It's been a difficult year.

  54. One year ago today, we gathered as Willow Ridge Church for our last time normally, right?

  55. From that moment on, in that day, we had begun and had fully made the transition from two services

  56. to one service, an important piece for us as a body of believers.

  57. You know, when my family, when we eat a meal together, half of us don't stay upstairs while

  58. the other half eat, and then we switch.

  59. We believe in our family that we eat together as a family, if at all possible.

  60. And we are strongly convicted that that's what God's family needs to do as well.

  61. And so we've made the transition to one service.

  62. It wasn't easy.

  63. Many of you took on sacrifices in order for that to happen, and we're greatly thankful for

  64. those sacrifices that you made during that season.

  65. Our students and our kids were gathering on Sunday morning and then back together, gathering on Sunday

  66. nights.

  67. If you drove past Willow Ridge Church on a Sunday night, you would see the parking lot filled.

  68. Our Hispanics had Bible studies going on.

  69. Celebrate Recovery had step studies going on.

  70. Student ministry was meeting.

  71. Kids ministry was meeting.

  72. It was a packed place where God was doing a lot of things.

  73. We had plans.

  74. I don't know about you, but I'd be willing to bet at least one of your plans this past year

  75. was canceled, right?

  76. We had plans as a church.

  77. We were going to go overseas, continuing in the journey to take the gospel to the nations,

  78. to see some of you take your first steps on the foreign soil, not because you were going

  79. to a resort, but instead you were going to a persecuted people to share the hope of the

  80. gospel.

  81. One year ago, we had a picnic planned for today, for that day, March 15th.

  82. It was going to be a picnic where all members of Willow Ridge Church were invited to be there,

  83. the English speakers and the Spanish speakers.

  84. We were going to gather together for one big picnic.

  85. Our youth groups were coming together to prepare food, to serve, to raise money for each's mission

  86. trips that they were going to be a part of, and we had celebrated that, and it was a remarkable

  87. work of what God was doing.

  88. But then at three o'clock that day, and this is not me casting a stone at our governor, Henry

  89. McMaster.

  90. If one thing is COVID is created, in me is a greater sense of grace for people who make

  91. decisions.

  92. Because oftentimes, and you know this in your own life, we only make decisions based off

  93. of what we have to the best of our ability.

  94. And on March 15th, I believe that that's what our governor did.

  95. About three o'clock that day, he placed us on a lockdown.

  96. I don't remember the exact numbers, but I think we were limited to groups no larger than 20.

  97. And we were here, and we got youth all in this building preparing food for everybody.

  98. I think most of them had gloves on.

  99. And I remember walking around, and we were like, we got 24.

  100. Uh-oh.

  101. Like, what's going on?

  102. Are the police going to show up and arrest us?

  103. And so, like, we're intentionally like, this group work over here, this group work over

  104. here.

  105. You may need to hide, right, if they show up.

  106. It's crazy.

  107. You showed up, and you picked up your food.

  108. We started our Chick-fil-A drive-thru out there, and you got it, and you went.

  109. We're grateful for what you did and your understanding in that.

  110. I went in my office about 3.30, 3.45 that day, and I cried.

  111. If you know me, man, I cry a lot.

  112. I'm a crier.

  113. I think real men cry, and we're okay with admitting that, but I cried.

  114. I was afraid.

  115. I was frustrated.

  116. I was disappointed.

  117. I was hurt.

  118. My wife came in.

  119. I don't know, Erin, if you remember this conversation, but Erin came into my office.

  120. She had been in here serving plates, and she came into my office, and she said, are you

  121. okay?

  122. And I said, no, I'm not.

  123. And she listened to me.

  124. As my insecurities and fears and concerns and frustrations began to come out, she listened,

  125. and then gave the greatest, godliest advice.

  126. She said, we're going to get through it.

  127. We're going to get through it.

  128. And for the last year, we, me, you, we got through it.

  129. We got through the last year.

  130. There's things we wish we'd have done differently.

  131. There's things that we celebrate that we did, but we got through it.

  132. God worked.

  133. God worked because we, we adjusted.

  134. You know, you adjusted.

  135. You, you began to do things differently at your home, with your family.

  136. You, you rethought how you do family vacation.

  137. You rethought date nights.

  138. You rethought how to have activities with your kids.

  139. We bought bikes.

  140. We went out on trails.

  141. Instead of going to arcades.

  142. We did more picnics together.

  143. We adjusted.

  144. We adjusted life.

  145. We adjusted here.

  146. We went online.

  147. The most petrifying thing that I've ever done in ministry.

  148. We started online services.

  149. And it is rough.

  150. We got through it.

  151. We got better.

  152. And you extended us the grace to do that.

  153. We did online Bible studies.

  154. Everybody in the course of a week got introduced to this thing called Zoom.

  155. Which you didn't know would take on so much with schools.

  156. But we got on and we did our Bible studies and we met differently and we adjusted.

  157. We adjusted with resources.

  158. Probably the most proud that I've been of, of, of any of the ministries at our, at our church

  159. has been with our children's ministry.

  160. Like there, there's more resources that they work on diligently to be able to provide for

  161. you as a family, whether you show up here on Sunday morning or whether you're going through

  162. at home.

  163. And so if you, if you feel like they haven't done enough, I just want to be honest with

  164. you, that's on you because there's stuff that's there.

  165. We purchased right now media in the world of, of Netflix and streaming for everything.

  166. We, we purchased right now media and in our church jumped in and embraced that and started

  167. online Bible studies where we could study things online and, and meet together.

  168. And it was fantastic.

  169. One of the things I remember kind of my highlight for, for all of this, Don, Don shared with

  170. me one day that we were going to do a Facebook live magic show for the kids in our kids ministry.

  171. And I thought that is the craziest idea that I've ever heard, but we did it right.

  172. And it was, the gospel was shared and families logged on and kids and myself were wowed and amazed because I

  173. still can't figure out how some of those things happen, but right.

  174. Thought outside of the box.

  175. It's what we did.

  176. It's what you did.

  177. We adjusted, we adjusted, we got through it, we, we changed and are doing things differently.

  178. We changed, we had standards and then we decided our standards aren't, aren't quite right.

  179. So we need to, we need to go above and beyond.

  180. You did that.

  181. So many of you did that.

  182. When there's so many churches that have depended on government loans in order to not just make

  183. budget because some of them still didn't, but to make payroll or to be able to pay their bills.

  184. We had the opportunity and were eligible for the same loan and God laid on our heart to say,

  185. no, thank you.

  186. Because we believed of what God was going to do in you and God did and you did and God worked in you

  187. and through you and you gave and you gave not out of ease and not out of comfort, but you gave out

  188. of sacrifice and you gave faithfully and from the bottom of my heart, thank you.

  189. I know so many churches where during COVID pastors have laid off staff members, been laid off themselves,

  190. taken massive pay cuts, that some of you have walked those same paths in your job.

  191. We didn't.

  192. I'm blessed.

  193. And my family's grateful for you.

  194. You went above and beyond.

  195. We went above and beyond as a church.

  196. We had a missions plan to go and we couldn't, but you gave to a missions plan, so we just gave it away.

  197. We fulfilled every financial commitment that we said we would fulfill in 2020.

  198. Every single one.

  199. There was not a missionary who was denied a penny of what we had committed.

  200. But then we were also, through your kindness and your generosity and your faithfulness with how God was working in you,

  201. we were able to give above and beyond to some of our partners.

  202. We were also able to give to churches and organizations that we weren't even partnered with,

  203. but we heard about an opportunity.

  204. One that I'll share with you is there's a church that we became aware of.

  205. I'll say we're friends.

  206. We're not partnering together, but we got a friendship with them.

  207. And they're right outside, like literally two miles outside of downtown Atlanta.

  208. And y'all know our state has been a little bit more lax on COVID restrictions, and that's for you to decide what you feel about that.

  209. But Georgia and Atlanta especially was a little bit more restrictive during that time.

  210. And as a result, men and women lost their jobs and didn't get paychecks.

  211. And I don't know if you've ever tried to tithe off of zero, but that's hard.

  212. And so this church was struggling.

  213. In my conversation with the pastor, I said, where are you lacking?

  214. What do you need?

  215. And he said, it's not, we're not worried about anything else.

  216. We're worried because we've spent all of our money.

  217. We have no more money for benevolence.

  218. And right now, I don't know if you've ever been to Atlanta in the summer,

  219. but it is equally as hot as Columbia.

  220. And he said, we have people who are making decisions.

  221. Do I pay the power bill or do I buy groceries?

  222. What do I do?

  223. And so we gave to them, and they then in turn gave it away as well.

  224. And so we're thankful for you guys.

  225. We as a church tried to model your faith, and we went above and beyond.

  226. Over the course of 2020, we've continued to see lives change through the power of the gospel.

  227. What it's all about.

  228. Celebrate Recovery embraced online.

  229. They had bumps in the road like we had bumps in the road as you try to stream and go through all those type things.

  230. But they rallied together, and they kept going on.

  231. They kept going virtually before they could come back together as one of our groups that went back face to face.

  232. And through the ministry of Celebrate Recovery, I don't know if you realize this,

  233. but 2020 has been marked by a year of unprecedented depression, substance abuse.

  234. And it's been marked by Celebrate Recovery stepping into a lot of those areas within the men and women and families in their ministry and meeting needs and providing a place of safety and a place of comfort where people can come through and work through their hurts, habits, and hangups through the power of the gospel.

  235. So they continued, figured it out.

  236. And we've seen families and individuals' lives changed and freed from the bondage that held them before.

  237. We've seen parents engage in different ways.

  238. One of the things I kind of laugh about, my wife has been a school teacher for a long time.

  239. My mom retired as a school teacher.

  240. I was a school teacher for three weeks.

  241. And said, nah, I can't do this.

  242. Went back into ministry, right?

  243. That's tough.

  244. I don't know how y'all do that.

  245. But we as parents, we became teachers.

  246. I didn't understand how complex middle school math was until my kids would say, could you help me with this?

  247. And I would think, absolutely.

  248. No, I can't.

  249. I have no clue.

  250. Call an eighth grader.

  251. All right?

  252. But we did, all right?

  253. As parents, we engaged in things.

  254. We dove in.

  255. And one of the exciting things that I've seen through COVID is parents engaging in the discipleship process.

  256. So many of you decided, I can't drop my kid off on Sunday night, so I'm just going to go forward with it.

  257. And here's what I believe.

  258. You're a better parent because of COVID.

  259. Discipleship became not what you dropped them off at, but the discipleship became what you do in your home.

  260. And so you did it in a different manner and places that you weren't comfortable with, but God worked.

  261. And as a result, lives were changed through the gospel.

  262. We started a baptism class that Pastor Dave had been working on, seeing individuals and families go through that to understand more about what life with Christ means and the Lord blessed during that season in different ways to baptize some.

  263. People joined our family.

  264. Never forget our first Sunday when we came back face-to-face.

  265. There wasn't a whole lot of us.

  266. It was easy to pick out who the visitors were because you ain't ever seen them before.

  267. And then it was different because they had seen you before.

  268. Because they had been watching online.

  269. And you began to realize, wow, y'all went through that and you stuck around with us.

  270. We appreciate you, you know?

  271. And they joined and they became part of our family and they've grown with us.

  272. And now they continue to meet with us face-to-face.

  273. And we continue right now.

  274. We got families that are joining online with us.

  275. They're at home.

  276. They've got their convictions of the reasons why they're not here with us.

  277. And we're glad that they're here.

  278. Some of those families we know and we can't wait for them to be able to meet back with us.

  279. And some families we don't know.

  280. And we long for the day that we can meet them for the first time face-to-face this side of eternity.

  281. Knowing that we'll meet face-to-face that side.

  282. One of the interesting...

  283. I'm going to call her a church member because I want to.

  284. My grandmother started watching online.

  285. She'd get on Facebook.

  286. She didn't have an account.

  287. My aunt would log her in.

  288. And before she passed, in January, she became a part of Willow Ridge.

  289. And I'm grateful for that.

  290. And I wouldn't have had that without COVID.

  291. You don't get to say that in a positive manner very often.

  292. God worked.

  293. God moved.

  294. God worked in your life and worked in my life.

  295. And we celebrate those things.

  296. And it's been phenomenal to see the growth that you've gone through and the growth that you've experienced.

  297. 2020 was hard.

  298. We all lost someone, I'd be willing to bet, over the course of that year.

  299. We had to make tough decisions financially.

  300. We probably got into arguments at some point in time.

  301. Maybe somebody fussed at us because we were five feet behind them in line and not six.

  302. You know?

  303. You forget.

  304. But we got into arguments and we got over it.

  305. It's crazy politically.

  306. We got through it.

  307. Right?

  308. God worked.

  309. For me, a big piece of what 2020 has been all about and how God works, I want to share a story with you.

  310. We're going to have a message today.

  311. We'll read scripture.

  312. It'll be brief.

  313. If you were in children's ministry last service, I apologize ahead of time.

  314. This is why we went over.

  315. A lot over.

  316. But there's a guy whose life and whose story became real to me over 2020.

  317. A guy who's been a church, been a part of our church for a decent amount of time.

  318. Not a long time.

  319. But who most of you probably don't know him.

  320. You never met him.

  321. You may have seen him.

  322. Be willing to bet you haven't spoken with him.

  323. He's pretty quiet.

  324. I guarantee you, you know his son and you know his daughter-in-law.

  325. And you definitely know their kids.

  326. It's the McGrady's.

  327. Scott sings up here from time to time.

  328. Sarah runs the words.

  329. And I love their precious kids.

  330. They ain't never met a stranger.

  331. And that always warms my heart when they come up and give me hugs or their drawings that they've done during service.

  332. They have.

  333. I love it.

  334. But I met Jerry.

  335. Jerry's the dad of Scott.

  336. And he comes in with them.

  337. And he's quiet.

  338. And before COVID, they would slide in somewhere near the back and they would sit there together.

  339. And then as they would leave and you find yourself being taken into the warmth and the love and the family of the McGrady's.

  340. And Jerry's kind of hang back and drift on out.

  341. And Jerry, I'm sorry, went through a powerful time during this.

  342. And I wanted to share the story with you.

  343. And I asked his son, Scott, if Scott would kind of help me tell the story.

  344. And instead of Scott helping me, he did a beautiful thing.

  345. He wrote a letter.

  346. And I'm going to read Scott's words, word for word, to you this morning.

  347. As Scott helps to tell the story of his dad.

  348. He says this, I wasn't sure what exactly you wanted me to send, so use as much or as little of this as you want.

  349. Well, Scott, I'm going to use it all.

  350. He says, Dad has been a believer for as long as I can remember, but he was never a churchgoer.

  351. He encouraged us to go to church, but never went himself.

  352. I remember having a conversation with him as a young adult about getting saved.

  353. And he told me that he had been saved, but struggles with the idea of submitting to God.

  354. And that was kind of how things went for the longest time.

  355. When we started going to Willow Ridge and decided that it was the church for us,

  356. we invited him every week until he finally broke down and came with us.

  357. Then a few weeks later, he came again.

  358. And then before long, he was coming every week.

  359. He told me that Willow Ridge was the first church he really felt comfortable in.

  360. As the weeks passed and Dad continued to attend it, it was amazing to see the changes God was making in him.

  361. When Sarah and I were baptized, he was there with us.

  362. Shortly thereafter, he started asking questions about baptism and started showing interest in being baptized himself.

  363. Unfortunately, COVID happened, and he hasn't been able to attend church since because of his condition.

  364. Dad has advanced lung cancer, COPD, heart disease, and a host of other issues that make going to many places impossible for him.

  365. At any rate, things reached a point where we realized that we needed to go ahead and get Dad baptized for his health,

  366. kept him from being able to do it.

  367. And that's when we reached out to Dave.

  368. Dad sat down with Dave, and he talked him through it.

  369. And again, it was like seeing a different person there.

  370. The strength of faith was apparent.

  371. And even though I knew Dad was struggling through the issues he is facing from cancer,

  372. it was apparent that he has found peace through Christ.

  373. Anyway, I know you said short, but I tend to get a little wordy.

  374. I hope this helps.

  375. Take care, sir.

  376. Scott McGrady.

  377. So a few weeks ago,

  378. we gathered here

  379. one night,

  380. and Jerry McGrady and his family came,

  381. and we got to baptize Jerry.

  382. Y'all check out the video.

  383. Well, it's a pleasure and an honor to continue to celebrate baptism this morning.

  384. Right here we got Jerry McGrady,

  385. who's professed his faith in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior,

  386. shared what God's been doing with him with Pastor Dave,

  387. and we receive him for baptism

  388. because he's been saved by Christ

  389. and we'll spend eternity with him.

  390. So, Mr. Jerry,

  391. based off of your profession of faith

  392. as Jesus Christ is your Lord and Savior,

  393. it's a privilege and an honor for me

  394. to baptize you, my brother,

  395. in the name of the Father,

  396. the Son,

  397. and the Holy Spirit.

  398. Amen.

  399. Congratulations.

  400. Thank you.

  401. Thank you.

  402. Thank you.

  403. So,

  404. 2020

  405. COVID

  406. government,

  407. whatever you want to call it,

  408. stopped a lot of things.

  409. It stopped your vacation.

  410. It stopped your plans.

  411. It stopped school.

  412. It stopped jobs.

  413. It didn't stop God.

  414. And God kept working

  415. and God kept moving.

  416. So, in this time where we've got everybody

  417. kind of giving their one-year assessment

  418. that's met with praise and skepticism

  419. and really nowhere in between,

  420. we want to look at our one year.

  421. It's been tough.

  422. It's been hard.

  423. But it's been good

  424. because God's kept going.

  425. I'm going to read the Bible in just a minute.

  426. We're going to have an abbreviated message.

  427. Let's pray before we do.

  428. Lord,

  429. Lord, I thank you so much.

  430. Lord, for what you've done.

  431. Lord, we didn't do anything.

  432. We didn't.

  433. We just said yes and you went.

  434. And Lord, I feel like we were just holding on

  435. to the edge of your robe

  436. as you led us.

  437. And Lord, you led us down the path

  438. of trying to figure out

  439. online worship services

  440. and live streaming.

  441. And you led us down a financial path of faith

  442. that we've never experienced before.

  443. And you led families down a path of discipleship

  444. and church down a path of discipleship.

  445. And all the time this was happening, Lord,

  446. you're changing lives.

  447. You're drawing people to yourself.

  448. And you're being glorified.

  449. And so God, I thank you for this opportunity

  450. that we have to just be a part of this.

  451. That in the smallness, Lord,

  452. that is my life.

  453. Lord, you allowed me

  454. in your sovereignty

  455. and in your grace

  456. and in your goodness

  457. to experience this past year.

  458. And so, Lord, I thank you for that.

  459. I thank you for Jerry McGrady.

  460. And I thank you for so many like him.

  461. 2020, COVID, shutdowns,

  462. masks, quarantines,

  463. social distancing,

  464. Lord, didn't stop.

  465. You from radically changing his life.

  466. And so we praise you for it.

  467. And it's in Jesus' name we pray.

  468. Amen.

  469. If you've got your Bibles with you this morning,

  470. open up to Luke chapter 11.

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  471. In just a minute,

  472. we're going to start reading in verse 37.

  473. And we're going to read about an encounter

  474. that Jesus has

  475. with a group of Pharisees.

  476. Now, if you know about Pharisees,

  477. or maybe you don't know about Pharisees,

  478. commonly Pharisees are viewed as

  479. the enemy of Jesus.

  480. And so if Jesus is the superhero of the story,

  481. then the Pharisees are the villain.

  482. They're the ones who are attacking Jesus.

  483. They're the ones who are trying to

  484. shut down the work that Jesus is doing.

  485. But I want us to look at Pharisees

  486. a little bit different.

  487. That they really,

  488. just as COVID didn't really shut down anything,

  489. Pharisees didn't really shut down anything.

  490. They changed things.

  491. They altered things.

  492. They made things look different.

  493. But Jesus kept going.

  494. In fact,

  495. Jesus would oftentimes use

  496. interactions with the Pharisees

  497. where they think,

  498. I got him

  499. to often leverage an opportunity

  500. to declare the gospel

  501. in a way that

  502. wouldn't have been possible

  503. if not for the Pharisee.

  504. And so in a lot of ways,

  505. like you and I need to be thankful

  506. that the Pharisees were there

  507. because we get moments like this

  508. of what we're about to read

  509. where Jesus says,

  510. hey, watch this.

  511. I know what you're trying to do,

  512. but boom, here we go.

  513. Right?

  514. And that's what we see.

  515. So let's start looking at verse 37.

  516. It says,

  517. While Jesus was speaking,

  518. a Pharisee asked him

  519. to dine with him,

  520. so he went in

  521. and reclined at the table.

  522. And the Pharisee was astonished

  523. to see that he did not first wash

  524. before dinner.

  525. And the Lord said to him,

  526. Now you Pharisees

  527. cleanse the outside of the cup

  528. and of the dish,

  529. but inside you are full of greed

  530. and wickedness.

  531. You fools!

  532. Did not he who made the outside

  533. make the inside also,

  534. but give as alms

  535. those things that are within

  536. and behold,

  537. everything is clean for you.

  538. And so this encounter,

  539. Jesus had been speaking

  540. and teaching

  541. and a Pharisee comes up to Jesus

  542. and says,

  543. Hey, come to my house.

  544. Have dinner with me.

  545. Now I don't know about you,

  546. but that's not a common encounter

  547. for two strangers to have.

  548. But it is common

  549. for you and I

  550. to invite someone

  551. into our house for dinner.

  552. And it's a very vulnerable thing, right?

  553. You come into my house,

  554. you see who I am.

  555. You come into my house,

  556. you see how I live life.

  557. We sit down at the table,

  558. we break bread together,

  559. we share stories together,

  560. we share life together.

  561. And so this Pharisee,

  562. and I don't know the intention

  563. of his heart at the time,

  564. has an encounter with Jesus

  565. and he says,

  566. Hey, come to my house

  567. wash and eat dinner with me.

  568. And as Jesus does,

  569. there's something that is said here

  570. that Jesus didn't wash before dinner.

  571. Now, growing up, right,

  572. before you came to eat,

  573. at least at the house

  574. that I was growing up,

  575. it was kind of like,

  576. I don't know about y'all,

  577. but breakfast and lunch

  578. were kind of like fair game.

  579. You know,

  580. if you were dirty

  581. after being outside and playing,

  582. I feel like,

  583. hey, here's a peanut butter

  584. and jelly sandwich

  585. and just go on with it, right?

  586. My wife probably cringed,

  587. but that's kind of how I've done things

  588. and she does things differently.

  589. But now for dinner,

  590. ever since growing up, right,

  591. it's that moment where it's like,

  592. okay, wash up,

  593. it's time to eat.

  594. Wash your hands,

  595. it's time to eat.

  596. And that's,

  597. it's not only acceptable,

  598. it's the norm

  599. and it's what's expected.

  600. Now over this last year, right,

  601. even more so,

  602. even more so,

  603. right between the time

  604. that you walk out these doors

  605. and go out the other set of doors

  606. to leave here,

  607. there's multiple times

  608. and places

  609. where you can stop

  610. and sanitize

  611. and wash your hands.

  612. If you walk into my home,

  613. there's at least

  614. four different places

  615. from the time you enter

  616. into the door

  617. to you get to our table

  618. in the kitchen

  619. where you can wash your hands.

  620. So what is going on here?

  621. Like,

  622. is Jesus being the gross guy

  623. at the dinner table

  624. who's like,

  625. nah, I'm good,

  626. you just gotta give

  627. and accept

  628. that I've got dirt

  629. underneath my fingernails, right?

  630. That's not what's happening

  631. here at all.

  632. This isn't a matter

  633. of hygiene

  634. of what's happening

  635. and taking place here.

  636. What the Pharisees

  637. would do

  638. during the time of Jesus

  639. is there was

  640. different times

  641. where they would agree to,

  642. would encourage,

  643. and would teach

  644. for a ceremonial washing

  645. or a ceremonial cleansing.

  646. And in order to eat

  647. in the house

  648. of a Pharisee,

  649. what they wanted you to do

  650. was ceremonially wash

  651. so that you could partake

  652. in life with them.

  653. Now,

  654. they weren't necessarily

  655. worried about you

  656. getting the germs

  657. off of you

  658. before they would

  659. shake your hand,

  660. before they would greet you,

  661. before they'd pull up

  662. a seat to their table.

  663. What they were concerned with

  664. is that you would

  665. get rid of the sin

  666. off of you

  667. so that you could be worthy

  668. to sit at their table,

  669. so that you could be worthy

  670. to dine with them.

  671. Why?

  672. Because they're good.

  673. They've done it all right.

  674. They followed

  675. every in their mind,

  676. every law

  677. and every command

  678. that God had told them to do.

  679. But you have not.

  680. So what do you need to do?

  681. You need to go

  682. and make yourself clean

  683. before you can engage

  684. in a relationship with me.

  685. Now, here's the irony

  686. of the situation.

  687. There's only one person

  688. who never needed

  689. to be cleansed

  690. from their sins.

  691. It was Jesus.

  692. So the whole point

  693. of the conflict

  694. of what we begin to see here

  695. in this encounter

  696. is you've got a sinful man

  697. looking at perfect divinity

  698. and saying,

  699. hey, before you can

  700. eat with me,

  701. before you can fellowship

  702. with me,

  703. go and make

  704. yourself clean.

  705. Not because God's called

  706. you to do that,

  707. but because I've called you

  708. to do that.

  709. See, the irony

  710. in this passage

  711. of Scripture,

  712. the hypocrisy

  713. of what we find here,

  714. but this was common

  715. with the Pharisees.

  716. The Pharisees

  717. obsessed over

  718. the external actions

  719. of what they would do

  720. and their goal

  721. in doing that

  722. and knowing that

  723. their hearts

  724. and their thoughts

  725. were wicked,

  726. but the goal

  727. in making sure

  728. that they observe

  729. all of these

  730. external actions

  731. is so that people

  732. would think

  733. they're spiritually

  734. more obedient

  735. than they really were.

  736. And that's why

  737. Jesus says,

  738. now you Pharisees

  739. cleanse the outside

  740. of the cup

  741. and of the dish,

  742. but inside

  743. you are full

  744. of greed

  745. and wickedness.

  746. Jesus says,

  747. look,

  748. the outside

  749. doesn't really match

  750. who you are.

  751. And I love

  752. his illustration

  753. that he gives.

  754. He gives the picture

  755. of something

  756. that you and I

  757. can all understand.

  758. A picture

  759. of a dirty dish.

  760. Now let's say

  761. that after church

  762. all of you

  763. are going to go

  764. and eat lunch

  765. at our house.

  766. Right?

  767. And my wife

  768. makes phenomenal,

  769. absolutely wonderful,

  770. out of this world,

  771. best I've ever had,

  772. lasagna.

  773. I'm just going to tell you,

  774. when you eat it,

  775. you're going to be amazed.

  776. All right?

  777. So we're going to invite you

  778. to our house

  779. to eat lasagna.

  780. And so you're pumped

  781. because you love lasagna

  782. and you show up

  783. at our house

  784. and we go

  785. and she pulls out

  786. that pan of lasagna

  787. and she peels

  788. that foil back

  789. and the cheese

  790. is just that ride

  791. of toasted and gooey

  792. and you can see

  793. the bubbles on the side.

  794. Y'all know

  795. what I'm talking about?

  796. It is getting close

  797. to lunch, right?

  798. And I open up

  799. the cabinet

  800. and there's no plates.

  801. I don't know,

  802. what do we do?

  803. So all of a sudden

  804. I realize

  805. everything's dirty.

  806. But it's okay.

  807. So I'll go over

  808. to the sink

  809. and I reach down

  810. into like the bottom

  811. of the sink water.

  812. Y'all know

  813. what I'm talking about, right?

  814. And I pull out

  815. the plate

  816. from the day before.

  817. And on the top

  818. of that plate

  819. there's that

  820. dried ketchup

  821. and mustard

  822. from where I ate

  823. too many corn dogs

  824. the day before.

  825. And so it's alright,

  826. I'll get it clean.

  827. So I go

  828. and I get a rag

  829. and I get some warm water

  830. going and I get some soap

  831. and I create a lather

  832. and I flip that plate

  833. over to the bottom

  834. of it.

  835. and I wash

  836. the bottom

  837. of it

  838. and I scrub

  839. the outside

  840. of that plate

  841. and I rinse

  842. it off

  843. and then I turn

  844. it over

  845. and there's the ketchup

  846. and the mustard.

  847. And I go,

  848. eh.

  849. And I go over

  850. and I go to that

  851. wonderful dish

  852. of lasagna

  853. that she's made

  854. for you

  855. and I take

  856. a big scoop out

  857. and plop it

  858. right on top

  859. of that mustard

  860. and then I hand

  861. it to you.

  862. What are you

  863. going to do?

  864. Somebody just said

  865. nope.

  866. I love that,

  867. right?

  868. Nope.

  869. I ain't eating that.

  870. That is not

  871. happening,

  872. right?

  873. You're like,

  874. but no one

  875. would ever do that.

  876. That's Jesus'

  877. point.

  878. That's his point.

  879. No one

  880. would ever say,

  881. oh,

  882. there's filth

  883. and germs

  884. and bacteria

  885. in the inside

  886. of this water bottle

  887. but the outside

  888. is good

  889. so drink up.

  890. No one

  891. would ever

  892. do that.

  893. And for Jesus,

  894. his point

  895. is this.

  896. Don't just focus

  897. in on the outside.

  898. The outside's important.

  899. The outside matters.

  900. Read James.

  901. It's important

  902. what we do.

  903. But the inside

  904. matters

  905. and the inside

  906. needs to be clean

  907. because there's

  908. danger

  909. when it's just

  910. the outside

  911. that appears

  912. to be clean

  913. when the inside

  914. is really filthy.

  915. Later on

  916. in chapter 11,

  917. Jesus is talking

  918. to the same group

  919. of Pharisees

  920. and he says this.

  921. He says,

  922. you're like

  923. unmarked graves

  924. which people

  925. walk over

  926. without knowing it.

  927. And what he means

  928. is this

  929. during his time.

  930. To be ceremonial

  931. unclean,

  932. you could do

  933. certain things

  934. which you would

  935. become unclean.

  936. And one of them

  937. would be

  938. to interact with

  939. or touch

  940. a dead body.

  941. And they had

  942. taken it to such

  943. a degree

  944. of making sure

  945. that you didn't

  946. interact with a dead

  947. body or touch

  948. a dead body

  949. that all graves

  950. must be marked.

  951. And so

  952. if a grave

  953. is here

  954. and there's

  955. the marker

  956. that's there

  957. that you would

  958. not walk

  959. on top

  960. of the grave

  961. out of fear

  962. that you might

  963. become unclean.

  964. So you would

  965. walk around it

  966. so that the ground

  967. underneath you

  968. had no death

  969. that was in it

  970. so that you could

  971. be clean.

  972. So look what

  973. he says

  974. to the Pharisees.

  975. You're like

  976. a dead person.

  977. You're dead.

  978. You don't get it.

  979. You're not alive.

  980. And in that

  981. what is happening

  982. in your life

  983. is the death

  984. and the decay

  985. that is there

  986. so that when

  987. people walk

  988. over you

  989. or people

  990. interact with you

  991. or people

  992. touch you

  993. what you spread

  994. is death

  995. and what you

  996. spread

  997. is

  998. filth

  999. and destruction.

  1000. And so

  1001. chapter 12

  1002. verse 1

  1003. look down at this

  1004. it says

  1005. in the meantime

  1006. when so many

  1007. thousands of people

  1008. had gathered together

  1009. that they were

  1010. trampling one another

  1011. he began to say

  1012. to his disciples

  1013. first

  1014. beware

  1015. of the leaven

  1016. of the Pharisees

  1017. which is hypocrisy.

  1018. So Jesus

  1019. has interacted

  1020. with

  1021. the Pharisees

  1022. he's interacted

  1023. with the lawyers

  1024. and these are the

  1025. teachers of the law

  1026. right

  1027. and then people

  1028. begin to gather

  1029. and as the crowds

  1030. come

  1031. as people

  1032. were surrounding

  1033. them

  1034. Jesus

  1035. looks

  1036. at his

  1037. disciples

  1038. says

  1039. understand

  1040. this

  1041. beware

  1042. don't be like

  1043. the Pharisees

  1044. because what's

  1045. going to happen

  1046. is it can

  1047. take a hold

  1048. and it can

  1049. destroy

  1050. and what

  1051. destroys

  1052. is hypocrisy.

  1053. I don't know

  1054. if you've

  1055. ever baked

  1056. bread

  1057. or dealt

  1058. with yeast

  1059. but leaven

  1060. is yeast

  1061. and what

  1062. I know

  1063. about yeast

  1064. is this

  1065. number one

  1066. a little bit

  1067. of the yeast

  1068. goes a long way

  1069. it doesn't take

  1070. a lot of yeast

  1071. a little bit

  1072. of yeast

  1073. goes a long way

  1074. and then also

  1075. I know this

  1076. once you mix

  1077. a little bit

  1078. of yeast

  1079. in with your

  1080. other ingredients

  1081. do you know

  1082. what you can't do

  1083. you can't go

  1084. remove it

  1085. it's not like

  1086. it's not like

  1087. putting pecans

  1088. in and then

  1089. deciding you

  1090. don't want that

  1091. so it's just

  1092. an inconvenience

  1093. let's pick

  1094. them out

  1095. once you mix

  1096. it

  1097. it becomes

  1098. a part

  1099. of what's

  1100. there

  1101. and a little

  1102. bit

  1103. goes a long

  1104. way

  1105. and Jesus

  1106. says that

  1107. hypocrisy

  1108. is the exact

  1109. same way

  1110. it spreads

  1111. and it moves

  1112. and it consumes

  1113. and it takes

  1114. over

  1115. I love this quote

  1116. that I found

  1117. this week

  1118. about hypocrisy

  1119. and it says

  1120. this

  1121. hypocrisy

  1122. puts the

  1123. bar

  1124. at an

  1125. impossible

  1126. height

  1127. and then

  1128. encourages

  1129. everyone

  1130. to pretend

  1131. that they're

  1132. jumping over

  1133. it

  1134. I love that

  1135. hypocrisy

  1136. says

  1137. let's put

  1138. the bar

  1139. at this

  1140. height

  1141. where we

  1142. know we

  1143. can't

  1144. clear it

  1145. and then

  1146. let's

  1147. don't even

  1148. try

  1149. but let's

  1150. let everybody

  1151. think that

  1152. we're jumping

  1153. over it

  1154. hypocrisy

  1155. says

  1156. that within

  1157. you

  1158. is the

  1159. realization

  1160. within

  1161. us

  1162. is the

  1163. realization

  1164. of

  1165. we're not

  1166. meeting that

  1167. we're not

  1168. conquering that

  1169. but we want

  1170. everybody else

  1171. to think that

  1172. we're doing

  1173. that

  1174. and that's

  1175. what hypocrisy

  1176. begins to

  1177. look like

  1178. oftentimes

  1179. you and I

  1180. and I'll be

  1181. honest with you

  1182. oftentimes

  1183. most people

  1184. in our

  1185. culture

  1186. they think

  1187. that hypocrisy

  1188. is when you

  1189. speak about

  1190. things that

  1191. are true

  1192. but then you

  1193. can't fulfill

  1194. them yourself

  1195. that's not

  1196. hypocrisy

  1197. hypocrisy

  1198. isn't declaring

  1199. the truth

  1200. of God

  1201. and then not

  1202. being able

  1203. to fulfill

  1204. the fullness

  1205. of that

  1206. in yourself

  1207. if that

  1208. was the

  1209. case

  1210. Jesus

  1211. couldn't

  1212. tell us

  1213. to not

  1214. be a

  1215. hypocrite

  1216. because I

  1217. would be

  1218. a hypocrite

  1219. every Sunday

  1220. morning

  1221. as we declare

  1222. the truth

  1223. of God's

  1224. word

  1225. so Jesus

  1226. says that

  1227. in this

  1228. to beware

  1229. to live

  1230. our lives

  1231. in a way

  1232. that's not

  1233. a hypocrite

  1234. so what

  1235. does this

  1236. look like

  1237. what's the

  1238. warning signs

  1239. of hypocrisy

  1240. for you

  1241. and for me

  1242. so I want to

  1243. give you a few

  1244. of these

  1245. this morning

  1246. we'll move

  1247. through these

  1248. really quickly

  1249. the first one

  1250. is this

  1251. hypocrisy

  1252. is a lack

  1253. of confession

  1254. hypocrisy

  1255. is a lack

  1256. of confession

  1257. hypocrisy

  1258. is an unwillingness

  1259. to confess

  1260. sin

  1261. and ask

  1262. for help

  1263. hypocrisy

  1264. is you

  1265. and I

  1266. feeling

  1267. that within

  1268. ourselves

  1269. there are

  1270. areas

  1271. in our

  1272. life

  1273. which are

  1274. just

  1275. private

  1276. and they're

  1277. personal

  1278. and no one

  1279. has the right

  1280. or the authority

  1281. to step

  1282. into this

  1283. one of the

  1284. beautiful things

  1285. that I love

  1286. about our

  1287. CR program

  1288. the ministry

  1289. that's there

  1290. one of the

  1291. beautiful things

  1292. that I love

  1293. about our

  1294. small groups

  1295. and what we

  1296. have

  1297. it is

  1298. this

  1299. it's

  1300. okay

  1301. to go

  1302. there

  1303. and not

  1304. be okay

  1305. it's

  1306. okay

  1307. to go

  1308. there

  1309. and say

  1310. you know

  1311. I've never

  1312. really shared

  1313. this with

  1314. anyone

  1315. but here

  1316. we go

  1317. because we're

  1318. commanded in

  1319. scripture

  1320. God's word

  1321. tells us

  1322. that we repent

  1323. before him

  1324. but we confess

  1325. to one another

  1326. right

  1327. confession

  1328. is not

  1329. just

  1330. between us

  1331. and the

  1332. Lord

  1333. but if

  1334. you're

  1335. going to

  1336. walk

  1337. in the

  1338. fullness

  1339. of your

  1340. faith

  1341. and obedience

  1342. and growth

  1343. there's

  1344. got to be

  1345. someone that

  1346. you sit

  1347. across the

  1348. table from

  1349. that you

  1350. look at

  1351. eye to eye

  1352. and that you

  1353. can say

  1354. I'm not

  1355. okay

  1356. and that in

  1357. turn

  1358. they can do

  1359. the exact

  1360. same thing

  1361. so hypocrisy

  1362. is a lack

  1363. of confession

  1364. the second

  1365. thing

  1366. hypocrisy

  1367. is man-made

  1368. standards

  1369. man-made

  1370. standards

  1371. hypocrisy

  1372. is saying

  1373. man-made

  1374. rules

  1375. that become

  1376. the standard

  1377. for others

  1378. holiness

  1379. now remember

  1380. what we talked

  1381. about the

  1382. standard is

  1383. the bar

  1384. I can't

  1385. clear it

  1386. but for you

  1387. that's the

  1388. standard

  1389. I'm going to

  1390. tell you I

  1391. clear it

  1392. you go clear

  1393. it as well

  1394. and the dangers

  1395. and the pitfalls

  1396. of religion

  1397. that we find

  1398. and in that

  1399. it causes us

  1400. to completely

  1401. miss

  1402. who Jesus

  1403. is

  1404. it's a

  1405. man-made

  1406. standard

  1407. that you

  1408. would have

  1409. to wash

  1410. yourself

  1411. before you

  1412. could sit

  1413. at the table

  1414. with the

  1415. Pharisee

  1416. and in doing

  1417. that the

  1418. Pharisee missed

  1419. who Jesus

  1420. was

  1421. the third

  1422. thing

  1423. for hypocrisy

  1424. hypocrisy

  1425. is comfort

  1426. with sin

  1427. now hypocrisy

  1428. externally

  1429. hates sin

  1430. hypocrisy

  1431. externally

  1432. really hates

  1433. the sins

  1434. of other

  1435. people

  1436. when we're

  1437. falling into

  1438. a good line

  1439. of being

  1440. a hypocrite

  1441. it ain't

  1442. hard for us

  1443. to be able

  1444. to point out

  1445. the shortcomings

  1446. and failings

  1447. of those

  1448. around us

  1449. but when

  1450. we're a hypocrite

  1451. we become

  1452. comfortable

  1453. with our

  1454. own sin

  1455. for a hypocrite

  1456. sin is okay

  1457. as long as

  1458. it's private

  1459. as long as

  1460. no one knows

  1461. about them

  1462. as long as

  1463. we don't have

  1464. to be

  1465. outed

  1466. for them

  1467. a line

  1468. that a hypocrite

  1469. likes to make

  1470. when confronted

  1471. with their sin

  1472. is who made

  1473. you God

  1474. don't judge

  1475. me

  1476. right

  1477. and here's

  1478. the difference

  1479. in love

  1480. when a

  1481. Christian

  1482. confronts

  1483. the sin

  1484. of another

  1485. Christian

  1486. they're not

  1487. practicing

  1488. judgment

  1489. they're practicing

  1490. vision

  1491. this is what

  1492. I see

  1493. this is what

  1494. I know

  1495. this is where

  1496. you are

  1497. come with

  1498. me

  1499. you know

  1500. we're told

  1501. in scripture

  1502. right

  1503. that we're

  1504. to look

  1505. engage

  1506. each other

  1507. by fruit

  1508. right

  1509. so God's

  1510. word calls

  1511. us to

  1512. confrontation

  1513. God's word

  1514. calls us

  1515. to say

  1516. now you say

  1517. that that's

  1518. an apple

  1519. but I

  1520. know fruit

  1521. and that

  1522. ain't an

  1523. apple

  1524. and I

  1525. love you

  1526. too much

  1527. to pretend

  1528. that it's

  1529. not there

  1530. right

  1531. hypocrisy

  1532. loves

  1533. false

  1534. holiness

  1535. right

  1536. when we

  1537. pretend

  1538. to be

  1539. more holy

  1540. than we

  1541. are

  1542. when we

  1543. pretend

  1544. to have

  1545. everything

  1546. put together

  1547. when we're

  1548. not

  1549. willing

  1550. to let

  1551. our guard

  1552. down

  1553. here's

  1554. I want to

  1555. close with

  1556. but what's

  1557. the big deal

  1558. why does

  1559. it matter

  1560. why can't

  1561. I just

  1562. have my

  1563. secrets

  1564. why can't

  1565. I just

  1566. have my

  1567. stuff

  1568. they're

  1569. personal

  1570. I have

  1571. my rights

  1572. to those

  1573. no you

  1574. don't

  1575. for either

  1576. one of

  1577. them

  1578. but Jesus

  1579. tells us

  1580. the danger

  1581. of hypocrisy

  1582. is this

  1583. God knows

  1584. God knows

  1585. our hypocrisy

  1586. is our

  1587. worst

  1588. kept

  1589. secret

  1590. if we're

  1591. not careful

  1592. there are

  1593. things you

  1594. and I

  1595. will take

  1596. to the

  1597. grave

  1598. that we've

  1599. hidden from

  1600. our spouse

  1601. that we've

  1602. hidden from

  1603. our parents

  1604. that we've

  1605. hidden from

  1606. our kids

  1607. our friends

  1608. our loved

  1609. ones

  1610. our church

  1611. family

  1612. we've got

  1613. secrets that

  1614. we can

  1615. take to

  1616. the grave

  1617. with us

  1618. but here's

  1619. the thing

  1620. after the

  1621. grave

  1622. they're

  1623. exposed

  1624. the Bible

  1625. tells us

  1626. in Revelation

  1627. that the

  1628. righteous

  1629. and the

  1630. unrighteous

  1631. will both

  1632. be judged

  1633. we will

  1634. stand

  1635. before

  1636. God

  1637. and in

  1638. Luke 12

    Luke 12:2

  1639. verse 2

  1640. here's what

  1641. Jesus says

  1642. nothing is

  1643. covered up

  1644. that will

  1645. not be

  1646. revealed

  1647. or hidden

  1648. that will

  1649. not be

  1650. known

  1651. therefore

  1652. whatever you

  1653. have said

  1654. in the dark

  1655. shall be

  1656. heard in

  1657. the light

  1658. and what

  1659. you have

  1660. whispered in

  1661. private rooms

  1662. shall be

  1663. proclaimed

  1664. on the

  1665. housetops

  1666. right

  1667. Jesus isn't

  1668. talking about

  1669. calling someone

  1670. out on

  1671. social media

  1672. right

  1673. posting

  1674. some nice

  1675. stuff

  1676. Jesus

  1677. is talking

  1678. about

  1679. gossiping

  1680. when we

  1681. find out

  1682. this

  1683. information

  1684. about

  1685. people

  1686. and then

  1687. making sure

  1688. that others

  1689. know under

  1690. the guise

  1691. of prayer

  1692. requests

  1693. right

  1694. that's not

  1695. what Jesus

  1696. is talking

  1697. about

  1698. what Jesus

  1699. is talking

  1700. about

  1701. is this

  1702. you got

  1703. things that

  1704. you want

  1705. to take

  1706. to the

  1707. grave

  1708. well here's

  1709. what you

  1710. got to

  1711. understand

  1712. when you

  1713. stand

  1714. before

  1715. God

  1716. what was

  1717. in dark

  1718. is going

  1719. to be

  1720. brought up

  1721. to light

  1722. right

  1723. what was

  1724. whispered

  1725. in the

  1726. privacy

  1727. of a

  1728. room

  1729. is going

  1730. to be

  1731. shouted

  1732. from the

  1733. rooftops

  1734. so how

  1735. do we

  1736. avoid

  1737. how do

  1738. we not

  1739. walk

  1740. through

  1741. that

  1742. well we

  1743. walk

  1744. through

  1745. just by

  1746. Jesus

  1747. what he

  1748. said

  1749. beware

  1750. of the

  1751. leaven

  1752. of the

  1753. Pharisee

  1754. don't

  1755. bring that

  1756. in

  1757. and here's

  1758. what I

  1759. tell you

  1760. we'll

  1761. wrap up

  1762. with this

  1763. this morning

  1764. what I want

  1765. you to take

  1766. away is

  1767. this

  1768. there's

  1769. freedom

  1770. in that

  1771. God

  1772. knows

  1773. God

  1774. knows

  1775. you know

  1776. why you

  1777. don't

  1778. confess

  1779. anything

  1780. to God

  1781. because

  1782. he already

  1783. knows

  1784. that's

  1785. why we

  1786. repent

  1787. to God

  1788. repenting

  1789. is saying

  1790. I'm sorry

  1791. confession

  1792. is declaring

  1793. what we've

  1794. done

  1795. we repent

  1796. to God

  1797. because

  1798. God

  1799. knows

  1800. and what

  1801. does God

  1802. do every

  1803. single

  1804. time

  1805. he brings

  1806. in

  1807. grace

  1808. he brings

  1809. in

  1810. forgiveness

  1811. he brings

  1812. in

  1813. freedom

  1814. and that's

  1815. what it

  1816. looks like

  1817. not being

  1818. a hypocrite

  1819. right

  1820. is found

  1821. when we

  1822. accept

  1823. the grace

  1824. of God

  1825. that God

  1826. gives us

  1827. I'm gonna pray

  1828. in just a

  1829. moment

  1830. but here's

  1831. what I

  1832. want to

  1833. say

  1834. Mark

  1835. and Jennifer

  1836. Babb

  1837. are here

  1838. and they

  1839. lead our

  1840. CR

  1841. ministry

  1842. some of

  1843. you guys

  1844. right now

  1845. 2020

  1846. has been

  1847. a tough

  1848. year

  1849. it's been

  1850. a hard

  1851. year

  1852. it's been

  1853. a long

  1854. year

  1855. all right

  1856. and in

  1857. this year

  1858. you've been

  1859. taking some

  1860. of the

  1861. things in

  1862. your life

  1863. and you've

  1864. been hiding

  1865. them here

  1866. and hiding

  1867. them here

  1868. and hiding

  1869. them here

  1870. and hiding

  1871. them here

  1872. and what

  1873. you're doing

  1874. every single

  1875. time that you

  1876. do that

  1877. is you're

  1878. connecting

  1879. another weight

  1880. of sin

  1881. and struggle

  1882. onto you

  1883. that builds

  1884. you down

  1885. and builds

  1886. a layer

  1887. of destruction

  1888. around your

  1889. life

  1890. you know

  1891. with CR

  1892. with our

  1893. celebrate

  1894. recovery

  1895. with our

  1896. small groups

  1897. with the

  1898. different ones

  1899. that we

  1900. have meeting

  1901. one of the

  1902. greatest things

  1903. that we can

  1904. give you

  1905. an opportunity

  1906. to do

  1907. right

  1908. is find the

  1909. freedom in

  1910. confession

  1911. the freedom

  1912. in a safe

  1913. place to share

  1914. your hurts

  1915. your habits

  1916. your hangups

  1917. your struggles

  1918. right

  1919. so that we

  1920. can find the

  1921. freedom

  1922. that God

  1923. has for us

  1924. and live

  1925. in that

  1926. so Mark

  1927. and Jennifer

  1928. if y'all

  1929. wouldn't mind

  1930. after the

  1931. service is

  1932. over with

  1933. if y'all

  1934. might hand

  1935. back in

  1936. the back

  1937. with me

  1938. and if

  1939. anybody

  1940. has any

  1941. information

  1942. about CR

  1943. Pastor Dave

  1944. will be there

  1945. as well

  1946. if we've

  1947. got information

  1948. about small

  1949. groups to try

  1950. to connect

  1951. you with

  1952. because we

  1953. want you to

  1954. walk in

  1955. what God

  1956. has given

  1957. you

  1958. let's pray

  1959. Lord we

  1960. thank you so

  1961. much for this

  1962. time and this

  1963. opportunity that

  1964. we could be

  1965. here

  1966. Lord I

  1967. thank you for

  1968. the grace

  1969. extended to me

  1970. by our church

  1971. family as I've

  1972. gone a little

  1973. over this

  1974. morning

  1975. but I just

  1976. Lord I think

  1977. it's so important

  1978. for us to be

  1979. able to see

  1980. what you've

  1981. done

  1982. Lord where

  1983. you've worked

  1984. where you've

  1985. moved

  1986. Lord in a

  1987. culture of

  1988. negativity

  1989. in a culture

  1990. of being a

  1991. skeptic

  1992. in a culture

  1993. of conspiracy

  1994. Lord can we

  1995. be reminded

  1996. of the grace

  1997. of the goodness

  1998. of God

  1999. which covers

  2000. all of

  2001. these

  2002. Lord and

  2003. you've done

  2004. that

  2005. Lord and

  2006. now as

  2007. we're here

  2008. my fear

  2009. Lord

  2010. the burden

  2011. of my heart

  2012. is that there's

  2013. so many of us

  2014. who've walked

  2015. in here with

  2016. a facade

  2017. that everything's

  2018. okay

  2019. that everything's

  2020. good

  2021. that I'm

  2022. exactly who I

  2023. need to be

  2024. and where I

  2025. need to be

  2026. Lord

  2027. it's just not

  2028. true

  2029. and that deceit

  2030. that is in us

  2031. it's taking root

  2032. like cancer

  2033. and spreading

  2034. throughout

  2035. it's consuming

  2036. us

  2037. and what we

  2038. need Lord

  2039. we need to be

  2040. able to walk

  2041. in the joy

  2042. of our salvation

  2043. and that's

  2044. not found

  2045. in the depths

  2046. of our secrets

  2047. but it's found

  2048. in the freedom

  2049. of our confession

  2050. and so Lord

  2051. I pray that as

  2052. we respond

  2053. to your word

  2054. this morning

  2055. number one

  2056. that we would

  2057. embrace a heart

  2058. of repentance

  2059. to you

  2060. Lord

  2061. that we're

  2062. sorry

  2063. where we

  2064. faltered

  2065. we're sorry

  2066. where we

  2067. failed

  2068. Lord

  2069. we ask

  2070. for you

  2071. to take

  2072. our crooked

  2073. paths

  2074. and to

  2075. make them

  2076. straight

  2077. Lord

  2078. we ask

  2079. you

  2080. to work

  2081. and move

  2082. in our lives

  2083. to set us

  2084. free

  2085. from the

  2086. struggles

  2087. that we

  2088. face

  2089. but then

  2090. Lord

  2091. we invite

  2092. others

  2093. into that

  2094. journey

  2095. with us

  2096. to help

  2097. us

  2098. to see

  2099. the blind

  2100. spots

  2101. around the

  2102. corner

  2103. to see

  2104. the areas

  2105. of our

  2106. life

  2107. that we're

  2108. neglecting

  2109. to live

  2110. in a

  2111. posture

  2112. and an

  2113. attitude

  2114. of confession

  2115. where secrets

  2116. and lies

  2117. are exposed

  2118. and where

  2119. truth

  2120. and hope

  2121. is replaced

  2122. Lord may we

  2123. not live

  2124. in isolation

  2125. but may we

  2126. live in

  2127. community

  2128. the bond

  2129. of Christ

  2130. that joins

  2131. us

  2132. and it's

  2133. in Jesus

  2134. name we

  2135. pray

  2136. amen

  2137. I'll be

  2138. down front

  2139. during our

  2140. time of

  2141. worship

  2142. after the

  2143. service

  2144. be back

  2145. in the

  2146. back

  2147. if you

  2148. want to

  2149. talk

  2150. or pray

  2151. we're

  2152. here

  2153. if you

  2154. need to

  2155. come down

  2156. here

  2157. and lay

  2158. have a

  2159. time of

  2160. repentance

  2161. but don't

  2162. walk out

  2163. of here

  2164. the same

  2165. way that

  2166. you walked

  2167. in

  2168. don't

  2169. carry the

  2170. burden

  2171. that you

  2172. are never

  2173. intended to

  2174. carry

  2175. alone

  2176. would you

  2177. stand

  2178. as we

  2179. worship

  2180. thanks again
