  1. Hi, and welcome to the Willow Ridge Church weekly podcast.

  2. This is where you can find audio for our current and past sermons.

  3. We hope that you enjoy this week's installment, and be sure to check back next week to hear

  4. the latest message.

  5. Thanks for listening.

  6. Well, good morning.

  7. If you've got your Bibles, go ahead and open them up to Acts chapter 8.

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  8. That's where we're going to be this morning.

  9. As you turn there, a couple things.

  10. I want to echo what Moses said to our first-time guest.

  11. We are glad and privileged and honored that you are here.

  12. Nothing would warn me more than have the opportunity to meet you.

  13. And so, after the service is over with, I'll be back over here.

  14. You see that I've got some wood against the wall with a welcome sign.

  15. I'll be back there.

  16. Just would love to meet you, learn your name, and just have an opportunity to thank you for

  17. being here and for worshiping with us.

  18. We do have a lot of things that are going on in the life of our church that you can sign

  19. up for.

  20. I want to kind of draw some emphasis to several of those.

  21. First, we've got our Black Mountain and Utah mission trips that are coming up in November.

  22. This week, we're going to be scheduling some information meetings for those of you that

  23. are interested in going and being a part of those.

  24. Get some cost details, what we're going to be doing, what that looks like for you.

  25. And so, if you're remotely interested, if you'd like to be a part of those meetings,

  26. make sure that you sign up.

  27. As you leave today in the lobby, we've got a table with some clipboards out, and you'll

  28. see Black Mountain and Utah mission trips are there.

  29. And then also, we are in our baptism series.

  30. As we talk about baptism, we will be doing a baptism on Sunday morning, October the 10th.

  31. And so, if you would like to be baptized, parents, if you've been talking to your child and they

  32. would like to be baptized, sign them up.

  33. We'll be in contact with you to talk a little bit more about baptism, what that Sunday will

  34. look like, and have an explanation of what all we're going to be doing on that day.

  35. And so, we would love to know and have an opportunity to be a part of that.

  36. Well, I think fall has kind of hit us, which means that you only sweat for like eight hours

  37. of the day in South Carolina, right?

  38. And so, it is a good day.

  39. There's plenty of places we could have all been this morning, but it's a privilege and

  40. an honor to be here today to open God's Word.

  41. And so, let's go ahead and dive in.

  42. We've been talking about baptism for the last couple weeks.

  43. And so, the last two weeks, as we talk about baptism, of the importance of what we see

  44. from Scripture, of what Scripture teaches, we don't want to take baptism in an approach

  45. of that this is some denominational exercise or requirement, but instead that this is something

  46. that we draw from Scripture that Christ commands us to.

  47. And just kind of take a moment, man, sitting here and worshiping just a moment ago, and Scott,

  48. when you were sitting there singing that song, man, like, I went to that day baptizing you

  49. and your wife right here that morning, man, and it was just, it was cool there in that moment,

  50. man, because the words that you were singing, while those aren't words that you wrote, those

  51. were words that God had given to someone else to write, but man, just telling your story

  52. and the power of that.

  53. So, just want to say thank you and so many of your steps of obedience to standing right

  54. here and proclaiming who Christ is, man.

  55. Love you for it and appreciate it.

  56. You crushed it.

  57. But what we've talked about for the last two weeks is baptism.

  58. Why we do it, how we do it, what it symbolizes, and what it means.

  59. Now, next week, when we talk about baptism again, we're going to kind of take, the last

  60. week's going to kind of wrap it all up, put it in one neat package.

  61. There's no way we can answer every question, but we want to kind of get to the heart of

  62. the matter concerning baptism.

  63. That's going to be last week.

  64. But this week, what I want us to do is we're going to take, still in the narrative of baptism,

  65. but we're going to take a step back and look at baptism in a more personal manner and ask

  66. the question, for you and I, as individuals, for you and I, just as believers and followers

  67. of Christ, what is our responsibility when it comes to baptism?

  68. And so, I want to remove some of our titles, all right?

  69. I want to remove the title for me of pastor.

  70. I want to remove the title of you, church member.

  71. And just give us all the title today of follower of Christ.

  72. That what is our responsibility as followers of Christ when it comes to baptism?

  73. Not because we're a part of a denomination, not as because we're a part of a church, but

  74. because we are believers and followers of Christ when it comes to baptism in my life and into

  75. yours.

  76. When we stretch across cultures, when we stretch across denominations, when we stretch across

  77. languages, what does baptism mean and what is our responsibility with that?

  78. And as I started looking at that this week, there was something that, as I looked in scripture

  79. and as I looked at this passage of scripture, as we're going to look at Philip and the Ethiopian

  80. eunuch here in just a second, what it drew to me for all of us as a believer, that this

  81. is going to apply for baptism, but so many areas of our life.

  82. And here's what's going to come down to your and my willingness to be led by the Holy Spirit.

  83. That when it comes to baptism, but also when it comes to so many different areas of our

  84. life, when it comes to the gospel, when it comes to God's will in our life, what I want

  85. us to do is to look at and to be able to answer and really wrestle with, are you and I willing

  86. to be led by the Spirit, all right?

  87. And so this morning, what we're going to do, we're going to get to Acts 8, but I want to

  88. kind of look at a major theme of not only scripture as a whole, but a major theme of the book of

  89. Acts, and especially in the first chapters, right, is the work of the Holy Spirit in Acts.

  90. All right, so let's look.

  91. We're going to kind of, I think I have about six verses that are going to pop up that I'm

  92. going to read, or six different sections that we're going to have.

  93. The first one is Acts 1-8.

  94. Jesus is speaking, and he says, but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on

  95. you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and all Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of

  96. the earth.

  97. Now, Jesus is getting ready to ascend.

  98. This is post-crucifixion and resurrection, and Jesus is getting ready to ascend into heaven.

  99. And so Jesus looks at his followers, and he says, but here's what's going to happen.

  100. I promise you, the Holy Spirit is going to come upon you, right?

  101. Holy Spirit, part of the Trinity.

  102. Oftentimes, you and I have a disconnect in the divine nature of God and the Holy Spirit.

  103. God the Father, God the Son, God the Spirit.

  104. And so God the Holy Spirit, Jesus says, will come upon you, and he will give you power, and

  105. you'll be my witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, and Samaria, and the ends of the earth.

  106. So at the very beginning, in the book of Acts, laying the groundwork, Jesus says, the Holy

  107. Spirit will come and indwell in the lives of the believers.

  108. And then he gives a very specific reason for that, right?

  109. The Holy Spirit's going to do a lot of things in your life and in my life, right?

  110. The Holy Spirit teaches us.

  111. The Holy Spirit convicts us, right?

  112. The Holy Spirit does a lot of things in our life.

  113. But the reason why Jesus gives here in Acts 1, 8 is very specific.

  114. That the Holy Spirit's going to come upon you so that you can be my witnesses in Jerusalem,

  115. Judea, Samaria, and the ends of the earth.

  116. So Jesus draws a very clear connection in this moment in being led by the Spirit and the work

  117. of the gospel in the lives of the believers.

  118. So here's the connection.

  119. So then in Acts 2, verse 1, you see what happens.

    Acts 2:1

  120. When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.

  121. And suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the

  122. whole house where they were sitting.

  123. And they saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each

  124. of them.

  125. And all of them filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the

  126. Spirit enabled him.

  127. Now, let's be honest, there's a lot of us who are deep-rooted in our Baptist traditions

  128. that this passage of Scripture kind of scares us a little bit, right?

  129. Like, we're not good with things that we can't understand.

  130. And then all of a sudden we're like, oh, and now they're speaking in tongues, right?

  131. So let's talk about this for just a second, all right?

  132. First thing I want us to point out, what Jesus says will happen, happens, right?

  133. Jesus said this is going to take place, and it takes place.

  134. That the followers of God that Jesus promises to, Pentecost comes, and it says they're gathered

  135. in one place.

  136. So imagine, like, we're sitting in this room, concrete walls, there's no windows, we've got

  137. these couple of doors.

  138. Let's say that these doors don't exist, and we're barricaded in here, and all of a sudden

  139. something like a tornado begins to work around here in this room.

  140. Kind of catch our attention for a moment.

  141. And that's what begins to happen.

  142. They're gathered in a room, they don't believe that there's any way of any outside ventilation

  143. that's coming in, and all of a sudden, like a whirlwind, like a tornado, this wind begins

  144. to happen in here.

  145. And then what the Bible says is that they saw what seemed to be.

  146. So they actually see something.

  147. They're not experiencing a feeling.

  148. They're describing what they saw.

  149. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on them.

  150. And then verse 4, all of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other

  151. tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

  152. So here's what God's doing here in this moment.

  153. Now, remembering all the way back to chapter 1, verse 8, what we just read, so that they

  154. could witness in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

  155. So this is the setting that we see.

  156. Right now in Jerusalem, there are men and women who are coming in Jerusalem for religious

  157. festivals that are coming from all over the world, and they speak many different languages.

  158. And so what God is doing, what God is mobilizing here in this moment is that the gospel will

  159. have the opportunity to be shared with them.

  160. And so we could get into more description about this, but we don't have time for today, so

  161. please trust me.

  162. If you've got questions, we'll talk about it afterwards.

  163. So what we see is the Holy Spirit begins to fill them, and they begin to speak in tongues.

  164. So just really quickly, this tongues, this isn't gibberish, this isn't an unknown language,

  165. this isn't anything like that.

  166. What happens right here in this moment to the followers of Christ is they begin to speak

  167. languages, known languages, that they didn't know before, but now they have the ability

  168. to speak in so that they can share the gospel.

  169. So the context would be, like, imagine if the Holy Spirit of God came and rested on you

  170. in such a way that as you go into another country in a language that you do not know,

  171. but now all of a sudden you're able to speak in that language so that you can communicate

  172. the gospel.

  173. And that's what happens.

  174. And it's part of the miracle of what we see.

  175. So we see now in this moment the boldness of God coming in and resting on the followers

  176. of Christ so they can share the gospel.

  177. But now let's look at chapter 4, verse 8.

  178. Then Peter, this is Peter, Apostle Peter, with Jesus, that had been with Jesus, right?

  179. One of the disciples, the inner core, verse 8, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them,

  180. rulers and elders of the people.

  181. So in chapter 4, what Peter is doing, Peter and John are taken before the council, the Pharisees

  182. and the Sadducees, and they come, and he lays it on them, right?

  183. The truth of who Christ is.

  184. And Peter is not able to do this because he's some great intellect.

  185. Peter is not able to do this because he has this gift of speech and communication.

  186. Peter is not able to do this because he sat back in the back and got this speech ready.

  187. It says in verse 8 that Peter filled with the Holy Spirit.

  188. And so what we see is that ministry in this moment as the early church begins to form is

  189. resting in the power and the ability of the Holy Spirit.

  190. So each single one, like there's not a pastor that they can turn to.

  191. There's not a seminary to go to.

  192. There's not a right now media resource where they can gain all their information from.

  193. They can't go to Lifeway or Mardell's or any Christian bookstore and buy like the 10 steps

  194. to how to share your faith, right?

  195. Like here in this moment, they're resting in the only thing that they can do in ministry.

  196. They don't know what they're doing, but it's through the power of the Holy Spirit.

  197. And this is what we see.

  198. And it's what we see in the people is moving and working in the power of the Spirit.

  199. And then look at chapter 6, verses 3 through 5.

  200. In those days when the number of disciples was increasing.

  201. So let's kind of pause.

  202. Like we've seen some other areas back in here.

  203. Like we're not talking like three or four are getting saved.

  204. We're talking like thousands are getting saved.

  205. Thousands are getting saved.

  206. It says in those days when the number of disciples was increasing,

  207. the Hellenistic Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews

  208. because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food.

  209. So the 12, okay, this is the inner core.

  210. Like we see where this is coming from.

  211. We see that only the power of the Spirit of God can do this.

  212. So the 12, the core that had been multiplied into thousands,

  213. but the 12 gathered all the disciples together

  214. and said it would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the Word of God

  215. in order to wait on tables.

  216. Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you

  217. who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom.

  218. And we will turn this responsibility over to them.

  219. And we will give our attention to prayer and to the ministry of the Word.

  220. And this proposal pleased the whole group.

  221. And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit.

  222. Also Philip, Prochorus, Nisenor, Taman, Parmenius, and Nicholas from Antioch,

  223. a convert to Judaism.

  224. And so what is going on in the life of the church is people are coming.

  225. And the 12, the apostles, they're looking around and they're like,

  226. man, we can't handle this.

  227. We can't do what we're supposed to do

  228. and take care of all of these things as well.

  229. So a problem arose.

  230. Because very early on, what the church recognized is that

  231. we're here for the spiritual needs, but there's also physical needs.

  232. There's the emotional needs.

  233. There's the things that are having to take place.

  234. And we need to take care of this.

  235. And as the church was growing and outgrowing its leadership structure,

  236. they've got to react.

  237. And so the apostles say like, hey, we want to focus in on prayer

  238. and teaching of the Word.

  239. So that's what we're called to do.

  240. So there's these other things that have to take place.

  241. And so what we find in here is this deacon ministry begins

  242. and this ministry is formed.

  243. Now, it's very interesting.

  244. And I want us to look at this.

  245. They looked out, began to pray through and decide like,

  246. who's going to take this on?

  247. And they didn't say, well, the most organized,

  248. who are the most organized people?

  249. They didn't say, who are the most educated people?

  250. They didn't say, who are the most light people?

  251. Who are the most popular people?

  252. They didn't say, who are the wealthiest people?

  253. Because they could probably fund this ministry.

  254. That's not what they did.

  255. They looked around, those who were called by Jesus

  256. to be the apostles, and they looked around

  257. and they saw these groups, they saw these individuals,

  258. and Scripture tells us they were full of the Holy Spirit

  259. and wisdom.

  260. Now, here's what I want us to be able to see.

  261. This is what's going to kind of carry us through, all right?

  262. When an individual is full of the Spirit,

  263. when an individual is full of the wisdom of God,

  264. it can be seen.

  265. It can be seen, it can be experienced.

  266. You can look and you can know.

  267. And they say, we see these men, right?

  268. And this is what's leading them, the Spirit of God.

  269. The Spirit of God that brought Peter to be able to speak.

  270. The Spirit of God that brought these men out

  271. to be able to proclaim the gospel

  272. in languages that they had never spoken before.

  273. They looked out and said, Stephen and Philip

  274. and you and you and you, we see all of this in you.

  275. And it's the choosing.

  276. And it's how they were chosen to serve.

  277. So as we look at this,

  278. we're going to look at Philip,

  279. a story, an encounter with Philip,

  280. one of the deacons that was chosen.

  281. This isn't a guy who had had years of church training.

  282. This isn't a story of a guy

  283. who had sat through 15 evangelism classes.

  284. This isn't a story of a guy

  285. who could answer every question about baptism.

  286. This isn't the story of a guy

  287. who had it all figured out.

  288. But it is going to be the story of a guy

  289. who said, I'm going to go and do

  290. what the Spirit of God is telling me to do

  291. and calling me to go.

  292. And as I stand here this morning,

  293. and as I look out at a group of people,

  294. and as I stood in my bathroom this morning

  295. and looked in the mirror myself,

  296. that that's the call for all of our lives.

  297. Are you and I willing to be led by the Spirit

  298. to go places, to do things,

  299. to form relationships that only can happen

  300. through the Spirit and power of God?

  301. Or are we trying to do things

  302. in our own ability, in our own might?

  303. And we'll see the connection to baptism here

  304. in just a moment.

  305. So let's read chapter 8, starting in verse 26.

  306. Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip,

  307. go south to the road, the desert road

  308. that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.

  309. And so he started out.

  310. And on his way he met an Ethiopian eunuch,

  311. an important official in charge of all the treasury,

  312. the Kandake, which means queen of the Ethiopians.

  313. And this man had gone to Jerusalem to worship.

  314. Now that's not because he was a follower of Christ.

  315. We need to pause here for just a moment.

  316. But as we had seen, there had been a lot of people

  317. who had come into Jerusalem for the religious nature of it.

  318. And this is why he was there.

  319. Verse 28.

  320. And on his way home was sitting in his chariot

  321. reading the book of Isaiah the prophet.

  322. And the spirit told Philip,

  323. go to that chariot and stay near it.

  324. And then Philip ran up to the chariot

  325. and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet.

  326. Do you understand what you are reading?

  327. Philip asked.

  328. Verse 31.

  329. And this is the passage of scripture that eunuch was reading.

  330. It's found in Isaiah 53, by the way.

  331. He was led like a sheep to the slaughter.

  332. And as a lamb before its shearer is silent,

  333. so he did not open his mouth.

  334. In his humiliation, he was deprived of justice.

  335. Who can speak of his descendants?

  336. For his life was taken from the earth.

  337. And the eunuch said,

  338. Philip, tell me please,

  339. who is this prophet talking about?

  340. Himself or someone else?

  341. And then Philip began with that very passage of scripture

  342. and told him the good news about Jesus.

  343. And as they traveled along the road,

  344. they came to some water.

  345. And the eunuch said,

  346. look, here is water.

  347. What can stand in the way of my being baptized?

  348. And he gave the orders to stop the chariot.

  349. And then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water

  350. and Philip baptized him.

  351. And when they came out of the water,

  352. the spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away.

  353. And the eunuch did not see him again,

  354. but went on his way rejoicing.

  355. Philip, however, appeared in Azotus

  356. and traveled about preaching the gospel in all the towns

  357. until he reached Caesarea.

  358. The story, not of a pastor,

  359. the story, not of a missionary,

  360. but the story of a follower of Jesus Christ

  361. who says yes to the spirit.

  362. Yes to the spirit.

  363. Yes to the spirit.

  364. So what would it look like in your life and mine?

  365. Let's lose the title.

  366. Let's lose the organization.

  367. What if we're there in this culture,

  368. in this context?

  369. We're not dependent on what the church,

  370. the place we go is going to do,

  371. the organization that we're a part of,

  372. what we're leaning in and pressing in onto each other.

  373. What if you and I just begin to put ourselves

  374. as individual followers of Christ,

  375. what does it mean to walk in the spirit?

  376. What does it mean to be led by the spirit?

  377. What does that mean?

  378. What can we draw from this?

  379. And I think number one,

  380. what I want us to get to is this,

  381. is God gives us unlikely people.

  382. God gives us unlikely people.

  383. Before we talk about everybody else,

  384. let's talk about us.

  385. You and I are unlikely.

  386. Here's what I mean.

  387. None of us, not one,

  388. deserve to get used and to get saved by God.

  389. Not one.

  390. A few weeks ago,

  391. I got a text message from someone

  392. who's very dear to my heart.

  393. They don't go to church here.

  394. Very dear to my heart.

  395. And this individual was going through

  396. a series of grieving and loss.

  397. And the question that was asked to me

  398. was,

  399. if a good person does bad things,

  400. can that good person still go to heaven?

  401. And my answer was,

  402. we got to understand that it's not about being good.

  403. It's about being saved.

  404. We got to talk through and understand that.

  405. Because the truth is,

  406. in light of the gospel,

  407. what I know,

  408. what you know,

  409. is that none of us are good.

  410. We're not good.

  411. We don't deserve to get used.

  412. And you think,

  413. well,

  414. I've done these good things,

  415. but said in the holiness of God,

  416. you're not good and I'm not good either.

  417. It's only by the blood of Jesus Christ,

  418. it's only by the work that he's doing,

  419. that God saves us and uses us.

  420. So as we press into this,

  421. as we think about,

  422. as we look to the unlikely people,

  423. let's understand that you and I

  424. haven't established ourselves on some pedestal

  425. because you and I are unlikely.

  426. Your story's messy.

  427. My story's messy.

  428. It doesn't matter how good we think that we were.

  429. God's not looking to save a bunch of good people.

  430. God's just saving people.

  431. And he's not even making us good

  432. and he's making us holy

  433. through who he is.

  434. So you and I are unlikely.

  435. And for Philip,

  436. right,

  437. as we see in his life,

  438. there's not a whole lot that we can see

  439. that is going on in his life,

  440. but the Holy Spirit is leading him.

  441. And so for him,

  442. it's not about being good,

  443. it's about following.

  444. And sadly for most of us,

  445. that's where the breakdown happens.

  446. We're so focused in on all the things

  447. that we want to do,

  448. all the things we want to accomplish,

  449. even if it's creating the spiritual checkbox

  450. and marking those off.

  451. But the question is,

  452. are we following,

  453. are we seeking the spirit of God

  454. and what God has for us?

  455. And so God in this moment

  456. is going to give Philip someone.

  457. And I guarantee you,

  458. it's not the someone

  459. that Philip would have been looking for.

  460. It's not the someone

  461. that he would have thought,

  462. this is what's going to make it in.

  463. This is what's going to be the story.

  464. This is going to be the defining moment.

  465. But this is what we see.

  466. And God brings him

  467. an Ethiopian eunuch.

  468. Right?

  469. And what's great that we can see in this,

  470. and we'll talk about there in just a moment,

  471. is God's taken the gospel context of the story

  472. and he's magnifying even more

  473. that he's moving it

  474. just from what people would thought of

  475. of a Jewish context

  476. to a Gentile everyone.

  477. So this Ethiopian eunuch,

  478. who is he?

  479. Number one,

  480. he's a high-ranking government official

  481. from Ethiopia.

  482. Ethiopia is a long ways away

  483. from Jerusalem, right?

  484. And so he's on this journey

  485. and he's religious,

  486. he's spiritual.

  487. And so he's come to Jerusalem

  488. for a place of worship,

  489. but now on his way,

  490. he's leaving.

  491. And a beautiful thing

  492. of what we see is happening

  493. is the Spirit of God

  494. is drawing him closer to Christ,

  495. is that he's reading a text

  496. and he's beginning to wrestle him

  497. with like,

  498. who is this about?

  499. Who is this about?

  500. But he's this high-ranking government official

  501. from a faraway land.

  502. Now, he's the Ethiopian eunuch.

  503. Real quickly,

  504. we won't spend too much time on this, right?

  505. He was castrated.

  506. He was castrated.

  507. Due to his career

  508. and his position,

  509. he was castrated

  510. so the king

  511. or the queen

  512. at the time

  513. would not have to worry

  514. about what he was trying to do

  515. or what he was trying to accomplish.

  516. And he was a Gentile.

  517. He wasn't Jewish.

  518. And so what this would have built up

  519. in the life of Philip,

  520. if Philip were just seeing him

  521. through his own eyes,

  522. that this would have been a man

  523. who was unworthy

  524. of the gospel,

  525. of the things he had done

  526. to his body,

  527. allowed to be done,

  528. the things that he was doing,

  529. the things that he was a part of,

  530. the land that he'd come from.

  531. He was unworthy.

  532. But what's so important

  533. is God didn't think so.

  534. God didn't think so.

  535. And so God brought this point

  536. in time for Philip, right?

  537. As we look about the gospel

  538. and as we think about our role

  539. and our part in it,

  540. I want to kind of deal

  541. with a tension

  542. that I know

  543. that is in the lives

  544. of individuals

  545. and what we think of

  546. and what we do

  547. and what pushes us.

  548. We all have people

  549. in our life

  550. that we think

  551. are unworthy

  552. of the gospel.

  553. When we're not being led

  554. by the Spirit,

  555. the sin begins to creep

  556. in our mind

  557. that they're not worth

  558. being saved

  559. or that God can't save them.

  560. And so we chalk them up

  561. as they're no good.

  562. There's no use.

  563. What's the point?

  564. Why even bother?

  565. And here's what I want us

  566. to think of.

  567. Think about that person

  568. in your life.

  569. That individual,

  570. that family member,

  571. that co-worker,

  572. that friend,

  573. that really obnoxious neighbor

  574. that you don't like,

  575. right?

  576. Like, think of who they are.

  577. They're not worth it.

  578. They're too rough.

  579. They're not worth it.

  580. Think about their past.

  581. They're not worth it.

  582. Think of all the things

  583. that they've done.

  584. They're not worth it.

  585. They're unlikely.

  586. What if we started

  587. viewing these people

  588. not as burdens

  589. but as gifts?

  590. What if we started

  591. viewing these people

  592. not as a burden

  593. that God has placed

  594. to live next door to us?

  595. A burden,

  596. not as a burden

  597. of the person that,

  598. why do we have to work with them?

  599. Not as a burden

  600. of why did they be in my family?

  601. What if we stopped

  602. defining them

  603. by their past failures

  604. and mistakes?

  605. And what if we started

  606. defining them

  607. as the gift

  608. that God

  609. is giving us?

  610. And that's what it means

  611. to begin to be

  612. walking and being led

  613. by the Spirit,

  614. especially in the Gospel.

  615. Second thing I want us

  616. to look at

  617. is the timing of God.

  618. The timing of God.

  619. I'm probably

  620. the world's worst

  621. at this, okay?

  622. But I want to make

  623. this statement.

  624. God doesn't need

  625. to check your schedule

  626. or mine.

  627. He doesn't.

  628. I can't tell you

  629. how many times

  630. I think I've got

  631. everything laid out,

  632. I've got what I need to do

  633. and then God detours

  634. and in that

  635. it creeps in my heart

  636. the inconvenience

  637. of the moment, right?

  638. But let's kind of establish

  639. God doesn't have to check

  640. your schedule or mine.

  641. His plans are bigger

  642. and His plans are better.

  643. Right?

  644. His plans are bigger

  645. than what you think.

  646. His plans are bigger

  647. than what I think

  648. and here's what's remarkable.

  649. His plans are better

  650. than what you could describe

  651. and His plans are better

  652. than what I could describe.

  653. They're even better

  654. than what we can hope for.

  655. As Philip is going into

  656. to this day

  657. of what is going to unfold

  658. within this,

  659. I don't know

  660. what was lined up for him

  661. but here's what I know.

  662. What God had in mind

  663. was bigger.

  664. What God had in mind

  665. was better.

  666. And I want us to think

  667. of the timing of this.

  668. The timing of the characters

  669. and who God chose

  670. and all these things.

  671. God sends a deacon

  672. not an apostle.

  673. This isn't Peter

  674. who'd gone through

  675. the test of this.

  676. This was a deacon.

  677. This was Philip.

  678. This was the everyday guy.

  679. This was a guy

  680. who was sitting there

  681. in a part of the church

  682. one day

  683. and he had a group

  684. walk up to him

  685. and he's like,

  686. hey man,

  687. by the way,

  688. here's what we've noticed.

  689. We've noticed

  690. that you love the Lord.

  691. We can see this in you.

  692. Would you come

  693. and start serving

  694. and doing some

  695. of these things,

  696. right?

  697. And then from this

  698. what we begin to see

  699. is the journey

  700. of salvation

  701. of what God's

  702. going to do

  703. in his life.

  704. That's God's timing,

  705. not ours.

  706. That's God choosing,

  707. not ours.

  708. But in the timing of God,

  709. God sends him

  710. to a Gentile

  711. and not a Jewish leader.

  712. And what we're going to see

  713. in this moment

  714. is the gospel

  715. is going to go global.

  716. The gospel is going to

  717. begin to expand

  718. even more so.

  719. The gospel is going to go

  720. from largely

  721. a group of men

  722. and women

  723. of financial

  724. insignificance

  725. to now an individual

  726. who heads up

  727. the treasury

  728. of an entire kingdom.

  729. And that's what it's going to do.

  730. But that didn't happen

  731. in anyone else's timing.

  732. That happened

  733. in God's timing.

  734. And here's what I think

  735. is remarkable, right?

  736. God sends to a desert,

  737. not to a city.

  738. I don't know about you.

  739. I was just telling somebody,

  740. I was telling Kim and Kyle,

  741. I think this morning

  742. we were talking

  743. before the service started.

  744. I said,

  745. how's that thing going?

  746. I was like,

  747. man, busy, right?

  748. No one told me

  749. that 13-year-olds

  750. are busy, right?

  751. And that's what

  752. we're learning, right?

  753. A 13-year-old boy,

  754. a 13-year-old girl,

  755. they're busy.

  756. No one told me

  757. when I was in,

  758. I thought when I was

  759. in college, right,

  760. that going to school

  761. for five classes a week

  762. was like the most

  763. I would ever have

  764. to work in my life.

  765. And then I got

  766. like a job, right?

  767. And then it got even more.

  768. And then I got married

  769. and I got even more.

  770. I got married

  771. and got kids

  772. and got even more

  773. and time and time and time.

  774. And so I thrive

  775. with being able to say

  776. like here's the schedule

  777. of what's there

  778. of what I need to do

  779. and when something happens

  780. to cause me

  781. to break from it

  782. and so God goes to Philip

  783. and says,

  784. not in the city

  785. where we see everything going,

  786. not in the city

  787. where you see everything planned

  788. and not in the city

  789. where you think

  790. everything's going,

  791. but I'm going to take you

  792. and I'm going to take you out

  793. and I'm going to send you

  794. into the desert.

  795. I'm going to send you

  796. in the desert.

  797. And I have a moment,

  798. I have a feeling

  799. in that moment

  800. like Philip's calendar

  801. got messed up a little bit.

  802. Right?

  803. But what's remarkable,

  804. what I want us to see

  805. is what this looks like in this.

  806. What does it mean

  807. to be led by the Spirit?

  808. It involves this

  809. listening and looking.

  810. And it's kind of connect.

  811. The angel came

  812. and went to Philip

  813. and Philip goes.

  814. Right?

  815. Look back at that first,

  816. very first verse.

  817. Now an angel

  818. of the Lord

  819. said to Philip,

  820. go south to the road,

  821. the desert road

  822. that goes from Jerusalem

  823. to Gaza.

  824. In the very beginning

  825. of verse 27,

  826. so he goes.

  827. He goes.

  828. It didn't matter

  829. with his schedule,

  830. it didn't matter

  831. with his time.

  832. So what's the difference

  833. between Philip

  834. and us oftentimes?

  835. Well,

  836. Philip was listening

  837. and looking.

  838. Now,

  839. let's be fair.

  840. If,

  841. an argument could be,

  842. well,

  843. if an angel

  844. says to me,

  845. go,

  846. then I'll go.

  847. Right?

  848. Is that a fair statement?

  849. Like,

  850. if an angel comes

  851. into your,

  852. into your home tonight,

  853. like,

  854. you're sitting there

  855. watching TV

  856. and says,

  857. go do something.

  858. Like,

  859. we'd all probably agree

  860. in that moment,

  861. it was just me

  862. and then all of a sudden,

  863. right,

  864. like angel there.

  865. You know what it looks like,

  866. don't know what's gonna happen.

  867. Be careful.

  868. Most of the time

  869. when angels show up,

  870. people are scared,

  871. but I guess

  872. if there's somebody

  873. standing behind my recliner

  874. and I didn't know

  875. that they were there,

  876. I'd be scared too,

  877. right?

  878. So we would say,

  879. well,

  880. that's easy,

  881. Bo.

  882. Philip's at his house,

  883. an angel appears,

  884. so he's gonna go.

  885. So here's what I'd like

  886. to ask you,

  887. just in rebuttal,

  888. rebuttal to that,

  889. right?

  890. Quick question,

  891. do you believe

  892. that this is the

  893. authoritative,

  894. inspired word of God,

  895. that it is perfect,

  896. that it is true,

  897. that every word

  898. that it is written

  899. came from God to us?

  900. We'd all shake our heads,

  901. yes,

  902. right?

  903. We agree with that.

  904. Well then,

  905. what we talked about

  906. in Matthew chapter 28,

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  907. what we talked about

  908. in Acts chapter 1

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  909. is that Jesus says go.

  910. Jesus says go.

  911. So I think that

  912. in our hearts

  913. there's some of us

  914. that would even argue

  915. with an angel

  916. that pops up

  917. behind our recliner,

  918. right?

  919. Because we won't listen

  920. to Jesus to go.

  921. But that's what we see.

  922. You know,

  923. he says yes.

  924. He says yes.

  925. And then I love this.

  926. Verse 27,

  927. before the interaction

  928. begins,

  929. it says simply

  930. in verse 27

  931. that he met him.

  932. That he met him.

  933. How many people

  934. a day do you meet?

  935. How many people

  936. a day do you interact with?

  937. How many people

  938. a day do we

  939. pull through

  940. a drive-through

  941. and scan our card

  942. and grab our food

  943. and go?

  944. How many people

  945. a day do we

  946. interact with

  947. at a grocery store

  948. or a line?

  949. How many people

  950. a day?

  951. How many people

  952. do you work

  953. with people

  954. that literally

  955. their desk

  956. is 20 feet

  957. from yours

  958. and you don't

  959. know who they are?

  960. How many people

  961. do we meet

  962. but we don't know?

  963. God didn't give him

  964. a sign

  965. but it simply says

  966. that he met him.

  967. That he met him.

  968. What if we begin

  969. to think through

  970. the individuals

  971. and the people

  972. that God bring us

  973. and the timing

  974. of all these things

  975. and begin

  976. to go ahead

  977. and set

  978. within the mindset

  979. of our heart

  980. and who we are

  981. is this a God

  982. appointment?

  983. Is this a God

  984. appointment?

  985. And so now

  986. the person

  987. at Starbucks

  988. isn't someone

  989. just taking our order

  990. but is it a God

  991. appointment?

  992. Now the person

  993. who's delivering

  994. our mail

  995. isn't just someone

  996. to be there

  997. and then we can

  998. yell at them

  999. because they didn't

  1000. come the day before

  1001. right?

  1002. But it's a God

  1003. appointment.

  1004. What if the person

  1005. at the grocery

  1006. store

  1007. is not someone

  1008. to just give us

  1009. something

  1010. but what if it's

  1011. a God appointment?

1012. But then what I love

  1013. within here

  1014. is God takes us

  1015. on this ride

  1016. as the

  1017. in verse 29

  1018. it does also

  1019. say though

  1020. that the spirit

  1021. says to him

  1022. right

  1023. and the spirit

  1024. said to Philip

  1025. go over

  1026. and join

  1027. this chariot.

  1028. I love that

  1029. because Philip

  1030. has got the mindset

  1031. of I'm gonna

  1032. go and do

  1033. and I've got

  1034. all of these

  1035. and so I'm

  1036. looking

  1037. I'm looking

  1038. I'm thinking

  1039. and then in this

  1040. moment the spirit

  1041. says to him

  1042. and I'm telling

  1043. more times than not

  1044. I've heard people

  1045. say so many times

  1046. I just wish

  1047. the spirit

  1048. would tell me

  1049. but I don't

  1050. hear him.

  1051. I go back

  1052. to our series

  1053. on prayer

  1054. we're not gonna

  1055. reteach it

  1056. but two of the

  1057. things that we

  1058. took out

  1059. do you want to

  1060. hear from the

  1061. spirit of God?

  1062. Two things

  1063. that I think

  1064. can help us

  1065. with that

  1066. number one

  1067. pray consistently

  1068. every day

  1069. every day

  1070. and listen

  1071. every day

  1072. but also pray

  1073. continuously

  1074. all the time.

  1075. You know

  1076. it's hard

  1077. to communicate

  1078. with someone

  1079. that we never

  1080. talk to.

  1081. Think about that.

  1082. It's hard

  1083. to communicate

  1084. with someone

  1085. we never

  1086. talk to

  1087. and we so

  1088. often times

  1089. want to hear

  1090. from God

  1091. but the question

  1092. is are we

  1093. communicating

  1094. with him?

  1095. Philip was

  1096. chosen

  1097. to be a

  1098. deacon

  1099. because people

  1100. saw the

  1101. evidence of

  1102. the spirit

  1103. of God

  1104. and the

  1105. wisdom

  1106. of God

  1107. in him

  1108. because before

  1109. it was a

  1110. job description

  1111. before it was

  1112. anything else

  1113. he was living

  1114. and communing

  1115. with God

  1116. right?

  1117. Listening

  1118. and looking

  1119. is not about

  1120. angels

  1121. in dreams

  1122. and burning

  1123. bushes

  1124. in the desert.

  1125. There's only

  1126. been a handful

  1127. of people

  1128. right?

  1129. That things

  1130. like this

  1131. have happened

  1132. to.

  1133. But listening

  1134. and looking

  1135. for the spirit

  1136. of God

  1137. to be led

  1138. by the spirit

  1139. of God

  1140. is simply

  1141. just being

  1142. obedient

  1143. to what

  1144. we know

  1145. the wisdom

  1146. that God

  1147. has set

  1148. for us.

  1149. What do you

  1150. think they

  1151. saw

  1152. in Philip

  1153. when they

  1154. chose him?

  1155. I bet

  1156. they saw

  1157. someone

  1158. who in

  1159. every moment

  1160. of his

  1161. life

  1162. was seeking

  1163. to be

  1164. obedient

  1165. to the

  1166. call of

  1167. God

  1168. on his

  1169. life

  1170. right?

  1171. And then

  1172. lastly

  1173. we're going

  1174. to close

  1175. with this.

  1176. What we

  1177. got to see

  1178. with Philip

  1179. what we

  1180. got to see

  1181. in his

  1182. life

  1183. is what

  1184. I call

  1185. participating

  1186. with God

  1187. right?

  1188. Participating

  1189. with God

  1190. and it's

  1191. what God

  1192. is inviting

  1193. us to

  1194. right?

  1195. I'm going

  1196. to take a

  1197. burden

  1198. off of

  1199. you.

  1200. You

  1201. can't

  1202. save

  1203. anyone.

  1204. You

  1205. can't.

  1206. Neither

  1207. can I.

  1208. We

  1209. can't

  1210. save

  1211. them.

  1212. God

  1213. saves

  1214. people.

  1215. And what

  1216. God

  1217. does

  1218. is God

  1219. invites

  1220. us

  1221. into

  1222. this.

  1223. God

  1224. says

  1225. here's

  1226. what I'm

  1227. going to

  1228. do.

  1229. Here's

  1230. how I'm

  1231. going to

  1232. work.

  1233. Here's

  1234. what I'm

  1235. going to

  1236. make

  1237. known.

  1238. And in

  1239. this

  1240. you

  1241. get

  1242. to

  1243. participate

  1244. in it.

  1245. Now I

  1246. went to a

  1247. Carolina football

  1248. game last

  1249. night and

  1250. we don't

  1251. have to

  1252. really talk

  1253. about how

  1254. that game

  1255. turned out

  1256. but I'm

  1257. used to it

  1258. by now.

  1259. All right?

  1260. Been 42

  1261. years of

  1262. suffering.

  1263. All right?

  1264. Even when we

  1265. were good we

  1266. weren't good

  1267. enough.

  1268. All right?

  1269. It's the

  1270. gospel.

  1271. All right.

  1272. We were in

  1273. the stands

  1274. and me

  1275. and Grayson

  1276. were those

  1277. obnoxious

  1278. fans come

  1279. up on the

  1280. thing make

  1281. some noise

  1282. and we'd

  1283. lean over

  1284. and hit the

  1285. metal bleachers

  1286. as hard as

  1287. we could in

  1288. front of us

  1289. and my

  1290. wife and

  1291. daughter would

  1292. look down

  1293. at us like

  1294. really?

  1295. Yeah.

  1296. We're that

  1297. guy right?

  1298. Yeah.

  1299. In a

  1300. slight glimmer

  1301. that we can

  1302. get like three

  1303. turnovers in

  1304. three seconds

  1305. right?

  1306. We stay to

  1307. the end

  1308. you know?

  1309. Just in

  1310. that hope

  1311. right?

  1312. In that

  1313. moment.

  1314. And sometimes

  1315. we think that

  1316. that's what

  1317. the gospel

  1318. is.

  1319. We just

  1320. stand on the

  1321. sidelines and

  1322. cheer for what

  1323. God's doing.

  1324. And that

  1325. ain't it.

  1326. That ain't

  1327. it.

  1328. Participating in

  1329. the gospel is

  1330. not about standing

  1331. on the sidelines

  1332. and always saying

  1333. yeah God

  1334. yeah God

  1335. yeah God

  1336. you go do it

  1337. all right?

  1338. Participating is

  1339. getting in the

  1340. game.

  1341. Getting in the

  1342. game.

  1343. And when you

  1344. get in the

  1345. game you get

  1346. bruises and

  1347. you get cuts

  1348. and you get

  1349. bloody and it's

  1350. hard.

  1351. When you get

  1352. in the game

  1353. it's a battle

  1354. it's pressing

  1355. but what is

  1356. beautiful is

  1357. your teammate

  1358. is the one

  1359. who never

  1360. fails.

  1361. Your teammate

  1362. is the one

  1363. that crosses

  1364. the finish

  1365. line.

  1366. Your teammate

  1367. is the one

  1368. who does it

  1369. all and who

  1370. gets all the

  1371. glory and the

  1372. beauty of it

  1373. is he says

  1374. come do this

  1375. with me.

  1376. Right?

  1377. Come do this

  1378. with me.

  1379. And so what

  1380. we see is

  1381. God saves

  1382. people you

  1383. and I

  1384. don't but

  1385. we can

  1386. participate

  1387. with him.

  1388. What I

  1389. love about

  1390. this story

  1391. is God

  1392. provided the

  1393. word.

  1394. When Philip

  1395. walks up

  1396. he's reading

  1397. out of

  1398. Isaiah

  1399. but God

  1400. says hey

  1401. Philip I'm

  1402. going to

  1403. provide the

  1404. word.

  1405. I'm going to

  1406. provide the

  1407. setting.

  1408. I'm going to

  1409. provide all

  1410. these things

  1411. but here's what

  1412. I'm going to

  1413. give you to

  1414. brother.

  1415. Go be the

  1416. messenger in

  1417. that moment.

  1418. Well who is

  1419. this lamb?

  1420. Let me tell

  1421. you about

  1422. this.

  1423. Jesus.

  1424. God

  1425. provided the

  1426. person.

  1427. Philip just

  1428. simply told

  1429. him who

  1430. Jesus was.

  1431. Look at

  1432. verse 34

  1433. and 35.

  1434. And the

  1435. eunuch

  1436. said to

  1437. Philip

  1438. about whom

  1439. I ask you

  1440. does the

  1441. prophet say

  1442. this about

  1443. himself

  1444. or someone

  1445. else?

  1446. In verse

  1447. 35 then

  1448. Philip opened

  1449. his mouth

  1450. beginning with

  1451. this scripture

  1452. he told him

  1453. the good

  1454. news about

  1455. Jesus.

  1456. He provided

  1457. it.

  1458. In these

  1459. moments

  1460. here's

  1461. where I fail

  1462. so many

  1463. times.

  1464. I answer

  1465. the question

  1466. but I

  1467. don't dive

  1468. into the

  1469. gospel.

  1470. Philip

  1471. could have

  1472. just said

  1473. man it's

  1474. Jesus

  1475. catch you

  1476. later man

  1477. I know

  1478. you're on

  1479. a journey

  1480. right?

  1481. But it

  1482. says he's

  1483. in the

  1484. chariot

  1485. he's

  1486. in his

  1487. life

  1488. he's

  1489. going

  1490. wherever

  1491. he's

  1492. going

  1493. he's

  1494. doing

  1495. whatever

  1496. he's

  1497. doing

  1498. that are

  1499. on the

  1500. journey

  1501. it doesn't

  1502. matter

  1503. and he

  1504. begins to

  1505. share with

  1506. him.

  1507. And then

  1508. I love

  1509. this

  1510. I love

  1511. this

  1512. participating

  1513. with God

  1514. God provided

  1515. the water

  1516. God provided

  1517. the water

  1518. What road

  1519. are they on?

  1520. The desert

  1521. road.

  1522. What makes

  1523. a desert

  1524. a desert?

  1525. Lack of

  1526. water

  1527. right?

  1528. And God

  1529. provided the

  1530. water.

  1531. He provided

  1532. the person

  1533. he provided

  1534. the means

  1535. of his

  1536. salvation

  1537. and the

  1538. working of

  1539. the spirit

  1540. God saves

  1541. him and

  1542. then God

  1543. provided the

  1544. water and

  1545. Philip simply

  1546. went and

  1547. baptized him.

  1548. Church I want

  1549. you to hear

  1550. this.

  1551. Please hear

  1552. this.

  1553. It doesn't

  1554. take a

  1555. pastor to do

  1556. this.

  1557. It takes a

  1558. follower of

  1559. Christ who's

  1560. willing to say

  1561. yes.

  1562. And Philip

  1563. doesn't say

  1564. no no no

  1565. now let's

  1566. wait a minute

  1567. we gotta wait

  1568. and hopefully

  1569. an angel

  1570. will appear

  1571. to one

  1572. of the

  1573. apostles

  1574. and then

  1575. they'll

  1576. come out

  1577. here too

  1578. and we

  1579. can kind

  1580. of wait

  1581. we can

  1582. see we

  1583. can get

  1584. this

  1585. scheduled

  1586. and we

  1587. can get

  1588. this taken

  1589. care of.

  1590. Now Philip

  1591. says now

  1592. let's get

  1593. dirty let's

  1594. get down

  1595. into this

  1596. and so

  1597. they walk

  1598. down into

  1599. the water

  1600. and he

  1601. baptizes

  1602. him.

  1603. And then

  1604. largely the

  1605. story of

  1606. Philip's

  1607. done.

  1608. We see him

  1609. again in

  1610. Acts chapter

    Acts 21 chapter mention

  1611. 21 when

  1612. he's visited

  1613. by Paul.

  1614. But here

  1615. in this

  1616. moment is

  1617. the high

  1618. emphasis

  1619. of importance

  1620. that we

  1621. see as

  1622. he seeks

  1623. to be

  1624. obedient and

  1625. to be led

  1626. by the

  1627. spirit.

  1628. What's your

  1629. responsibility

  1630. in baptism?

  1631. Take off

  1632. your title.

  1633. What's

  1634. my

  1635. responsibility?

  1636. Let me

  1637. ask you

  1638. this.

  1639. In all

  1640. that you

  1641. do are

  1642. you being

  1643. led by

  1644. the Holy

  1645. Spirit?

  1646. Are you

  1647. looking for

  1648. opportunities

  1649. of obedience

  1650. especially in

  1651. the difficult

  1652. ones?

  1653. And then

  1654. where is

  1655. he taking

  1656. you?

  1657. Who's

  1658. determining

  1659. your schedule

  1660. every single

  1661. day?

  1662. Are you

  1663. trusting in

  1664. God's

  1665. timing?

  1666. Admitting

  1667. that he

  1668. knows best

  1669. and not

  1670. you?

  1671. Who

  1672. has God

  1673. given

  1674. you?

  1675. Who

  1676. has God

  1677. given

  1678. you?

  1679. Who

  1680. is

  1681. that

  1682. thorn

  1683. in the

  1684. flesh

  1685. the

  1686. pain

  1687. the

  1688. depth

  1689. of

  1690. the

  1691. lost

  1692. person

  1693. that

  1694. you

  1695. know

  1696. and

  1697. you're

  1698. saying

  1699. no no no

  1700. you don't

  1701. know them

  1702. if you knew

  1703. them you would

  1704. know there's no

  1705. way God

  1706. would save

  1707. them.

1708. Well can I tell you

  1709. before I got

  1710. saved

  1711. somebody said

  1712. do you know

  1713. him?

  1714. And more than

  1715. likely there's a

  1716. whole group of

  1717. us in here

  1718. that before you

  1719. got saved

  1720. somebody went

  1721. oh no

  1722. not him

  1723. and maybe

  1724. even after

  1725. are you

  1726. sure?

  1727. Right?

  1728. Who has God

  1729. given you?

  1730. But be the

  1731. messenger

  1732. share

  1733. study God's

  1734. word

  1735. give the

  1736. answer

  1737. and then here's

  1738. what I want to

  1739. challenge you

  1740. with

  1741. here's what I

  1742. want to

  1743. impress on your

  1744. heart

  1745. here's what I

  1746. want to lay

  1747. there

  1748. be the one

  1749. that baptizes

  1750. be the one

  1751. that baptizes

  1752. baptism is

  1753. not

  1754. it is

  1755. ordained

  1756. it is

  1757. called

  1758. it's what

  1759. the church

  1760. does

  1761. not just

  1762. by the

  1763. pastors

  1764. and so as

  1765. I'm talking

  1766. to someone

  1767. I'm asking

  1768. them

  1769. I mean

  1770. who shared

  1771. the gospel

  1772. with you?

  1773. Who's the

  1774. greatest

  1775. influencer

  1776. in your

  1777. life?

  1778. Who's the

  1779. one that

  1780. are bringing

  1781. you alongside?

  1782. Who's

  1783. discipling

  1784. you?

  1785. And what

  1786. I would

  1787. love to

  1788. see

  1789. what flips

  1790. this

  1791. country

  1792. what flips

  1793. this world

  1794. what flips

  1795. this community

  1796. upside down

  1797. is that when

  1798. men and

  1799. women are

  1800. investing in

  1801. the unlikely

  1802. sharing the

  1803. gospel with

  1804. them and

  1805. they're the

  1806. ones that

  1807. are seeing

  1808. through the

  1809. power of

  1810. the Holy

  1811. Spirit of

  1812. what God

  1813. is doing

  1814. and turning

  1815. their lives

  1816. upside down

  1817. and taking

  1818. those unlikelies

  1819. and making

  1820. them the

  1821. saved saints

  1822. that God's

  1823. going to use

  1824. to empower

  1825. the kingdom

  1826. and then it's

  1827. not the

  1828. bows

  1829. it's not

  1830. the pastors

  1831. it's not

  1832. the leadership

  1833. that's

  1834. baptizing

  1835. but it's

  1836. the men

  1837. and women

  1838. who are

  1839. boldly

  1840. sharing their

  1841. faith

  1842. living through

  1843. the power

  1844. of the

  1845. gospel

  1846. it's the

  1847. Philips

  1848. it's the

  1849. Philips

  1850. that are

  1851. out there

  1852. and it's

  1853. the Philips

  1854. that are

  1855. baptizing

  1856. let's pray

  1857. Lord I thank

  1858. you for the

  1859. life of

  1860. Philip

  1861. Lord I thank

  1862. you for who

  1863. he was

  1864. and what he

  1865. did

  1866. Lord I thank

  1867. you that

  1868. sitting here

  1869. in this

  1870. room

  1871. Lord there

  1872. are so

  1873. many men

  1874. and women

  1875. who are

  1876. Philips

  1877. they love

  1878. you Lord

  1879. they desire

  1880. your will

  1881. for their

  1882. life

  1883. Lord would

  1884. you just

  1885. help us

  1886. to open

  1887. our ears

  1888. to hear

  1889. open our

  1890. eyes

  1891. to see

  1892. Lord bring

  1893. bring our

  1894. unlikely to

  1895. us

  1896. Lord may

  1897. we pray

  1898. for them

  1899. that they

  1900. would know

  1901. you

  1902. Lord may

  1903. we share

  1904. with them

  1905. so that they

  1906. could know

  1907. Lord may

  1908. we be willing

  1909. to be

  1910. inconvenienced

  1911. Lord may

  1912. we be willing

  1913. to be bold

  1914. Lord would

  1915. we be willing

  1916. to

  1917. to stop

  1918. being the

  1919. people

  1920. that sit

  1921. in the

  1922. nosebleed

  1923. section

  1924. and

  1925. bang on

  1926. the bleachers

  1927. and watching

  1928. everybody

  1929. do the

  1930. work

  1931. but Lord

  1932. may we be

  1933. the ones

  1934. that get

  1935. off

  1936. and go

  1937. and get

  1938. the game

  1939. the game

  1940. game's

  1941. hard

  1942. game's

  1943. tough

  1944. we don't

  1945. always feel

  1946. like we're

  1947. winning

  1948. but Lord

  1949. we know

  1950. that you

  1951. win

  1952. so Lord

  1953. I thank

  1954. you

  1955. that all

  1956. you take

  1957. is unlikely

  1958. people

  1959. and save

  1960. them

  1961. that all

  1962. you take

  1963. is unlikely

  1964. people

  1965. and use

  1966. them

  1967. you're

  1968. taking

  1969. old

  1970. things

  1971. making

  1972. them

  1973. new

  1974. you're

  1975. redeeming

  1976. our

  1977. past

  1978. and our

  1979. failures

  1980. so that

  1981. people may

  1982. know what

  1983. we've

  1984. done

  1985. but that

  1986. just gives

  1987. us Lord

  1988. a springboard

  1989. to be able

  1990. to share

  1991. with them

  1992. what you're

  1993. doing

  1994. I know

  1995. that's who

  1996. I was

  1997. but now

  1998. this is who

  1999. I am

  2000. in Christ

  2001. I know

  2002. that's what

  2003. I did

  2004. but this

  2005. is how

  2006. I've been

  2007. saved

  2008. this is how

  2009. I've been

  2010. redeemed

  2011. this is how

  2012. I've been

  2013. forgiven

  2014. I know

  2015. that's who

  2016. my identity

  2017. was

  2018. but this

  2019. is my

  2020. identity

  2021. now

  2022. I know

  2023. that I

  2024. was dead

  2025. but now

  2026. I'm alive

  2027. we're all

  2028. unlikely

  2029. Jesus we

  2030. thank you

  2031. for the

  2032. opportunity

  2033. to be

  2034. a part

  2035. for you

  2036. choosing

  2037. us

  2038. saving

  2039. us

  2040. calling

  2041. us

  2042. into the

  2043. game

  2044. Lord I

  2045. pray that

  2046. we would

  2047. respond

  2048. in

  2049. likeness

  2050. Lord if

  2051. there's

  2052. anyone here

  2053. who does

  2054. not know

  2055. you

  2056. Lord

  2057. they're the

  2058. Ethiopian

  2059. eunuch

  2060. sitting

  2061. in the

  2062. chariot

  2063. doing

  2064. religious

  2065. works

  2066. showing

  2067. up to

  2068. religious

  2069. festivals

  2070. building

  2071. questions

  2072. Lord I

  2073. pray that

  2074. today

  2075. or through

  2076. the power

  2077. of your

  2078. spirit

  2079. Lord

  2080. their lives

  2081. would be

  2082. saved

  2083. that their

  2084. lives

  2085. would be

  2086. changed

  2087. that they

  2088. would

  2089. surrender

  2090. every

  2091. part of

  2092. their

  2093. identity

  2094. of who

  2095. they

  2096. are

  2097. Lord I

  2098. pray that

  2099. they would

  2100. find

  2101. forgiveness

  2102. at the

  2103. cross

  2104. Lord I

  2105. pray that

  2106. they would

  2107. find hope

  2108. and eternity

  2109. and a

  2110. meaning

  2111. and identity

  2112. based on who

  2113. you are

  2114. and not who

  2115. they are

  2116. Lord I

  2117. pray that

  2118. they would

  2119. not lean

  2120. in on

  2121. their

  2122. limited

  2123. understanding

  2124. but they

  2125. would press

  2126. into

  2127. and lean

  2128. into

  2129. the wisdom

  2130. and the

  2131. sovereignty

  2132. of God

  2133. and that

  2134. today would

  2135. be the day

  2136. of their

  2137. salvation

  2138. Lord I

  2139. pray for

  2140. every single

  2141. one of us

  2142. that's in

  2143. here

  2144. that's

  2145. online

  2146. Lord

  2147. and I

  2148. pray that

  2149. right now

  2150. in this

  2151. moment

  2152. Lord give

  2153. us our

  2154. unlikely

  2155. through the

  2156. kindness of

  2157. your spirit

  2158. speak their

  2159. name into

  2160. our hearts

  2161. paint their

  2162. picture in

  2163. our brain

  2164. Lord would

  2165. we just

  2166. say yes

  2167. whatever it

  2168. takes

  2169. if it

  2170. means getting

  2171. on a road

  2172. to a desert

  2173. then I'll

  2174. get on a

  2175. road to a

  2176. desert

  2177. if it

  2178. means a

  2179. conversation

  2180. that makes

  2181. me feel

  2182. uncomfortable

  2183. then it's a

  2184. conversation

  2185. that I'll

  2186. have

  2187. because I

  2188. want to be

  2189. led by your

  2190. spirit

  2191. I want to

  2192. see people

  2193. saved

  2194. I want to

  2195. see the

  2196. kingdom

  2197. grow

  2198. I want to

  2199. see lives

  2200. transformed

  2201. and we'll

  2202. glorify you

  2203. for it

  2204. in Jesus

  2205. name we

  2206. pray

  2207. amen

  2208. we got

  2209. prayer

  2210. encouragers

  2211. on either

  2212. side of

  2213. the auditorium

  2214. maybe today

  2215. you would

  2216. like to

  2217. talk to

  2218. someone about

  2219. a relationship

  2220. with Christ

  2221. they're going

  2222. to be back

  2223. here

  2224. tell you what

  2225. I think

  2226. I'll be

  2227. I'll be at

  2228. the very

  2229. back

  2230. back here

  2231. as well

  2232. maybe today

  2233. you're saying

  2234. that

  2235. man

  2236. you're the

  2237. Ethiopian

  2238. you got

  2239. questions

  2240. we want

  2241. to talk

  2242. to you

  2243. we want

  2244. to share

  2245. we want

  2246. to point

  2247. you to

  2248. Jesus

  2249. we'd love

  2250. to do

  2251. that

  2252. but I

  2253. want to

  2254. do this

  2255. and

  2256. burger

  2257. promise

  2258. man

  2259. you'll

  2260. start

  2261. playing

  2262. here's

  2263. what

  2264. we're

  2265. going

  2266. to do

  2267. well you're

  2268. still

  2269. playing

  2270. man

  2271. here's

  2272. what I

  2273. want you

  2274. to do

  2275. if you've

  2276. got that

  2277. unlikely

  2278. if you've

  2279. got that

  2280. unlikely

  2281. I want

  2282. to ask

  2283. this morning

  2284. that you're

  2285. going to

  2286. respond to

  2287. God

  2288. and

  2289. acknowledging

  2290. that

  2291. and as

  2292. we stand

  2293. to sing

  2294. I want

  2295. to ask

  2296. you

  2297. if you

  2298. know

  2299. who

  2300. that

  2301. unlikely

  2302. is

  2303. I want

  2304. to ask

  2305. you

  2306. to come

  2307. down

  2308. front

  2309. in an

  2310. act

  2311. of

  2312. I'm

  2313. going

  2314. to submit

  2315. this

  2316. to the

  2317. Lord

  2318. submit

  2319. my

  2320. obedience

  2321. to him

  2322. and just

  2323. kneel down

  2324. kneel down

  2325. here before

  2326. him

  2327. and just

  2328. pray

  2329. that God

  2330. would use

  2331. you

  2332. pray for

  2333. their

  2334. salvation

  2335. that God

  2336. would use

  2337. you to

  2338. show

  2339. that God

  2340. would use

  2341. you

  2342. and that

  2343. God

  2344. would draw

  2345. them

  2346. to himself

  2347. and that

  2348. they

  2349. would be

  2350. saved

  2351. and so

  2352. as the

  2353. band

  2354. leads

  2355. us

  2356. if

  2357. you've

  2358. got

  2359. that

  2360. one

  2361. you

  2362. come

  2363. down

  2364. here

  2365. let's

  2366. get on

  2367. our

  2368. knees

  2369. before

  2370. him

  2371. say

  2372. God

  2373. whatever

  2374. it

  2375. takes

  2376. whatever

  2377. it

  2378. takes

  2379. respond

  2380. how

  2381. God

  2382. is

  2383. leading

  2384. you

  2385. this

  2386. morning

  2387. thanks
