  1. Hi, and welcome to the Willow Ridge Church weekly podcast.

  2. This is where you can find audio for our current and past sermons.

  3. We hope that you enjoy this week's installment, and be sure to check back next week to hear

  4. the latest message.

  5. Thanks for listening.

  6. Good morning.

  7. If you've got your Bibles, going to open them up to 1 Corinthians chapter 1.

    1 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  8. It's where we're going to be as we start off in our new series.

  9. I hope you all got to go outside or chose to enjoy the snow in the way that you wanted

  10. to enjoy it, right?

  11. I don't know if you know this or not, but Joanne C. gets cold, like, looking at refrigerators

  12. at Lowe's, all right?

  13. Like, she's that level of cold.

  14. And so, she confessed any picture that she got was, like, from the inside of the comfort

  15. of her home.

  16. But us, we got out in it for, like, three hours, as long as it was out there, and got

  17. to enjoy doing some South Carolina sledding, which means, like, finding stuff around your

  18. house and then pushing people down a hill of mud, right?

  19. And that's what we did for a while.

  20. But it was a wonderful, wonderful time.

  21. And I hope you guys had the opportunity to enjoy it.

  22. But it's good to have you guys here this morning.

  23. Did this, got here early, hit a little bit of ice on some of the back roads from my house

  24. to here, but overall, it was safe and glad to be able to be here with y'all.

  25. We will have our Sunday night starting back.

  26. We were supposed to start back last week, but we will start back tonight.

  27. And we're excited about that.

  28. Sunday night's full on for us.

  29. Sunday night's more like Sunday afternoons, starting at 4 o'clock.

  30. We'll have all of our adult small groups will be starting back.

  31. Some started this morning, but we'll be back.

  32. And we're going to be working through on Sunday mornings and in our groups, 1 Corinthians

  33. together.

  34. So I'm excited about that, to be leading a group, going through that, preaching through

  35. this on Sunday morning.

  36. But then also on the rows that you're seated, you'll see there's a little reading schedule

  37. there.

  38. And so what I would like to challenge you to do is to take that reading schedule.

  39. And as we work through this on Sunday morning and in our small groups, during your quiet

  40. time, work through it with us.

  41. And here's what you're going to see.

  42. Like on Sunday mornings, we're not going to necessarily read and go word by word through

  43. 1 Corinthians.

  44. We'll do a little bit more of that maybe in our small groups, but you have the opportunity

  45. to do that on your own as we walk through this.

  46. And I love it when we have the opportunities to do this together as a church, because what

  47. we see is, is you guys through the power of the Holy Spirit, feeding yourselves in quiet

  48. time, discussing that in your small groups as you meet together.

  49. And then us having the opportunity corporately to come together in worship through studying

  50. God's word.

  51. If you're not in a small group, also on your seats, there's a list of all of our small groups

  52. and there's definitely an opportunity and time for you to get connected in one and would

  53. love to see you have that.

  54. We've also got our kids discipleship is going on tonight and our student ministry is going

  55. on tonight.

  56. And so we have something for every age and every opportunity for you to be a part of Willow

  57. Ridge Church and what God is doing here.

  58. So let's look in, get started in 1 Corinthians.

  59. Now, last week was different for me.

  60. All right.

  61. Confession moment.

  62. All through seminary, you take preaching classes and they're like, hey, we want you to preach

  63. on this passage of scripture.

  64. And it never worked out that that's the passage of scripture that we were doing in church.

  65. And so on usually Sunday nights after we'd get done with church, I would tell Aaron and

  66. the kids, hey, I need y'all to go upstairs and be really quiet.

  67. And then I would position myself somewhere in the house.

  68. Like I did like all the trash, all the dirt, right?

  69. Get move all that out of the way.

  70. Not that we're dirty people.

  71. That just sounded bad, right?

  72. But try to make it cleaner.

  73. And then I would position myself in our home and preach.

  74. And it was weird because it was me and the camera.

  75. And then last week it was weird a little bit too.

  76. But God was good, enjoyed being able to do that.

  77. And just kind of give us a little background of 1 Corinthians of what is this letter about

  78. that we're diving into.

  79. And one of the things that I talked about last week, and I want to kind of recap that

  80. a little bit as we're going into this, is if you've studied scripture some, what you'll

  81. know is that the church at Corinth, as we get into this, like it epitomizes, it embodies

  82. dysfunction.

  83. There's a lot of stuff that's going on that when we read through this, we're like, really?

  84. You're like, this is the decision that y'all are making.

  85. And what I want us to do a little bit is as we read, we're going to see the problems that

  86. are in this church that we're studying.

  87. And I don't want them to see these as these problems that they suffer with, because for

  88. us on the surface, they may be so foreign, but yet the theological stuff that's going on,

  89. the application things that are going on, the practical issues that we're going to see,

  90. and as Paul corrects, are so many of them that can be applied to our context at Willow Ridge

  91. Church, but also to our lives as individual believers.

  92. So that as we journey through this, it's not the standing on the outside looking at the

  93. shock of what those people are doing in their problematic church, but seeing what Paul is

  94. addressing, why Paul is addressing that, how Paul is correcting them, and then looking at

  95. that for ourselves.

  96. And we're going to look at this morning with unity amongst the body, and say, God, what

  97. are you showing me in my life?

  98. Lord, what are you showing us as a body of believers in Willow Ridge Church in Lexington,

  99. South Carolina, where we have the privilege and the opportunity to read this letter this morning?

  100. Right?

  101. It's not just them, it's us, and what do we want to draw from this?

  102. And so just a minute, we're going to start reading in verse 10, but Paul begins this letter,

  103. very important, and we're not going to read it this morning, but he begins it with a greeting

  104. like he often does, and begins it with a thanksgiving.

  105. I think that's important.

  106. I think that's important, and here's kind of what I want to just segue on a little bit.

  107. They're a problematic church that Paul has to deal with, that Paul's got to work with.

  108. There we go.

  109. But what is beautiful in this that we're going to see, and I want it to be the way that we

  110. look at, the way that we address, the way that we work through different things in our life,

  111. is when we have things that cause us problems, when we have things that cause us issues that

  112. we've got to work through, how, what is the mindset that we're taking to them?

  113. Are we taking them to with thanksgiving, as Paul does, as he recognizes that it's a group of

  114. believers that have wandered, a group of believers that are confused, or do we look at these as the

  115. simple inconveniences of our life?

  116. But Paul looks at this as an opportunity for the church to grow and mature in their faith,

  117. and as a result of that, Paul begins with thanking the Lord for them.

  118. So it's going to be the groundwork that we're going to see with this.

  119. So let's start reading in verse 10.

  120. Paul writes, and he says,

  121. I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree,

  122. and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind, in the same

  123. judgment.

  124. For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there is some quarreling among you, my brothers.

  125. What I mean is that each of you, what I mean is that each one of you says, I follow Paul,

  126. or I follow Apollos, or I follow Cephas, or I follow Christ.

  127. Is Christ divided?

  128. Was Paul crucified for you?

  129. Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?

  130. I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, so that no one may say that

  131. you were baptized in my name.

  132. I did baptize also the house of Stephanas.

  133. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.

  134. Verse 17, for Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, and not with words

  135. of eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of his power.

  136. And so Paul jumps in very quickly, and he says, look, I'm grateful for you, and now I

  137. want to appeal to you.

  138. I want to appeal to you for who you are to address these things out of the love that I

  139. have for you.

  140. And what Paul does is he calls them to unity.

  141. Look back at verse 10.

  142. I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  143. that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united

  144. in the same mind and the same judgment.

  145. And so Paul says, I want to encourage you.

  146. I want you to be united.

  147. I want to appeal to you.

  148. So I'm not bringing this to you in words of anger, but as the loving, as someone who loves

  149. you, as a leader who cares for you, as someone that a lot of you look to me as a father in

  150. your faith, I want to appeal to you in this.

  151. Like, can you hear the heart of Paul, what he's dealing with?

  152. It's a parent who's sitting there with their children, imploring them out of the love that

  153. is in their heart, not in the rebuke that comes from their mouth, but imploring them,

  154. begging them, understanding, like, this is what it means for God, for you to walk in his

  155. will, and to exude all that Christ has for you.

  156. And he says in verse 10, he defines this unity for us in two ways.

  157. The first is at the end of verse 10.

  158. He says, but that you may be united in the same mind and in the same judgment.

  159. So what's he talking about?

  160. Paul here is talking about an inward harmony.

  161. He said, I want to be how you feel toward one another and how you feel toward the gospel

  162. to be one of unity.

  163. That when you look at and when you see one another, that you do not see the divisions.

  164. When you look at and when you see one another, what you see is Christ.

  165. When you hear about the gospel, when we're called to the gospel, that we're in the same mind,

  166. there's the same feeling, there's the same desire within this.

  167. That there's agreement, that there's unity.

  168. But also, kind of in the middle, he says that all of you agree.

  169. And this word that you agree is the word, it's a court term that would mean that all of you

  170. would have the same testimony.

  171. And not testimony as in my testimony of coming to faith and your testimony of coming to faith

  172. align and that they happen in the exact same format.

  173. But it's that the testimony of Jesus Christ, the gospel of Jesus Christ, of who he is,

  174. is unified in who we are.

  175. So our stories may be different, but we're proclaiming the same gospel.

  176. And what we're working toward is we're working toward alignment and unity within the church.

  177. Because the gospel works in this way.

  178. So let's talk a little bit about unity.

  179. And then kind of a negative context.

  180. Let's talk about divisions versus disagreements, all right?

  181. Can we disagree in the church?

  182. Yes, we can disagree in the church.

  183. Now, that makes some of us, myself, feel uncomfortable, right?

  184. But we can disagree.

  185. There are wonderful, beautiful things that we can disagree on.

  186. But can we have divisions in the church?

  187. No.

  188. Here's the thing.

  189. We can disagree on the things that are secondary.

  190. But where there must be unity, where there cannot be division, is on things that are primary.

  191. And that's how the church needs to live and how the church needs to be.

  192. And we can look at that and see that in so many different areas of our life.

  193. From your job that you go to, you need to be unified in where you're going and what you're doing.

  194. Does that mean that there can be disagreements?

  195. Yes, there can.

  196. And disagreements can honestly bring out what's better in this situation.

  197. I thought about the example in my life where I learned so much from what God is gracious to give me is in our marriage.

  198. Mine and Aaron's marriage.

  199. Some of you may find this hard to believe, but we disagree from time to time, right?

  200. I know, right?

  201. And I'm wrong, right?

  202. We disagree.

  203. But what is beautiful in marriage is we disagree on what's secondary.

  204. What color to paint a room, where to go out to eat, what to do on vacation.

  205. These are disagreements that if you've lived in a marriage, you know these are things that we can disagree on.

  206. But we're unified on what is primary.

  207. That in our marriage that we seek and desire to be obedient to God in all things.

  208. That in our marriage we fight for and cling to faithfulness amongst the two of us.

  209. That in our marriage that we want to agree that we raise our kids to love the Lord and to seek after Him.

  210. And so when we take these understandings of who we are as a couple and that this is what we work toward.

  211. Do Aaron and I disagree in our marriage?

  212. Yes.

  213. Do these disagreements bring disunity?

  214. No.

  215. Because they're secondary.

  216. And so many times on both sides of this, churches divide over secondary.

  217. Church divides over things that are based off of opinions.

  218. Paul's like, we can disagree on that.

  219. But we can work toward unity because we're unified under the gospel.

  220. And the church, we need to fight to make sure that we don't have these divisions.

  221. But we must not turn secondary disagreements into primary divisions.

  222. And Paul's going to kind of address some of the things in the church that causes this.

  223. So what causes disunity?

  224. What causes divisions?

  225. Well, let's look at what's happening here in Corinth.

  226. Look at verse 11.

  227. Paul says,

  228. For it's been reported to me by Chloe's people that there's some quarreling among you, my brothers.

  229. What I mean is that each one of you says,

  230. I follow Paul, or I follow Apollos, or I follow Cephas, or I follow Christ.

  231. So Paul points out here that there's four divisions that are going on in the church.

  232. And we think we can understand a little bit through context of scripture what's going on, how the church is divided.

  233. So the church is divided into four different factions.

  234. Well, see, this church isn't just a church of Jewish converts.

  235. It's not just a church of Gentile converts, even though it's mainly a church of Gentile converts, right?

  236. They outnumber the Jewish converts.

  237. And so Paul says, some of you follow Paul.

  238. Some of you are saying that they follow him.

  239. And so these are more than likely the Gentile converts.

  240. He says, some of you follow Apollos.

  241. Now, Apollos, you can kind of read about him in Acts 18.

  242. But basically, he was known as a very eloquent preacher from Alexandria.

  243. Now, you're going to see some of this context later at the end of this passage of what Paul writes.

  244. So some of you are like, man, we're Gentile converts, and we follow Paul.

  245. He's the one because he's the missionary to us.

  246. And some are like, no, no, no.

  247. Have you heard this Apollos guy speak?

  248. Like, when he shows up to our church, when we have the opportunity to go out and listen to him,

  249. like, how eloquent he is, like, whatever he says, we follow him.

  250. And then some are like, well, but we follow Cephas.

  251. Now, Cephas is Peter, and Peter was largely seen as a missionary to the Jewish people.

  252. And so they're like, no, no, we're Jewish, and so we follow him.

  253. And then there's a fourth group.

  254. And the fourth group's like, no, well, y'all can follow them, but we're just going to follow Jesus.

  255. Now, they're not right either, and let me explain.

  256. All right?

  257. What's going on with this group is they're standing back with almost like a sense of religious pride.

  258. Look how good we are.

  259. You can have all your quarrels all you want to.

  260. We're going to rise above this.

  261. We've been enlightened to the things that you aren't enlightened to.

  262. And so we're just the ones who follow Jesus, and you're incapable of being where we are.

  263. And we're going to see this level of division all throughout 1 Corinthians come up over and over again.

  264. And so what causes this?

  265. What causes this sense of division that we begin to see within here?

  266. And I think there's three different things that we can look at in churches that bring this type of division.

  267. Number one is ego.

  268. Number one is ego.

  269. And let me say this before we get into these three.

  270. If there's division in your church, division in your marriage, division in your job, division in your family,

  271. I would be willing to bet that one of these three things is what's kind of raising its head up there, too.

  272. That when we see what brings so much pain and so much suffering,

  273. when we see what destroys the unity that God has for us,

  274. we'll find these exact same things.

  275. I mean, if my marriage and my family are supposed to be a reflection of the church,

  276. then these things would be consistently there, too, if there's division.

  277. If you're a Christian in your workplace and you're supposed to be the one that embodies Christ and shows Christ,

  278. but yet you and other believers find a sense of disunity which is in there,

  279. more than likely this would be the case as well.

  280. And the first one that we see is ego.

  281. And so what's happening in here,

  282. and honestly, we don't know what's kind of coming forward in a lot of these different aspects

  283. of what's leading these people to choose these factions,

  284. but what we see happening here and what we see can happen in the church

  285. when the egos begin to rise up

  286. are pastors and leaders

  287. who demand loyalty

  288. even over loyalty to Jesus.

  289. Now, we're going to talk about the frailty of pastors

  290. in just a little bit.

  291. We're going to talk about the weakness of pastors here in just a moment

  292. and I feel like I know them really well.

  293. But pastors and leaders who demand loyalty

  294. over loyalty to Christ.

  295. Yes, loyalty is a beautiful thing.

  296. Loyalty is something that needs to be embraced

  297. within the context of the church.

  298. But in the moment where it's choosing a man

  299. over choosing Jesus,

  300. he's lost his way

  301. and so has the church who follows him.

  302. Or secondly,

  303. people who try to put pastors and leaders

  304. on a platform that they don't deserve

  305. and honestly, I've seen this so many times

  306. that they never even asked for.

  307. I mean, if I can have a little bit of freedom here

  308. on this passage of scripture,

  309. Paul goes five years earlier

  310. before he writes this

  311. and helps plant this church.

  312. And what Paul would do

  313. is he would plant a church,

  314. he would raise up leaders,

  315. he would leave that church to go

  316. plant more churches,

  317. they would help fund what he was doing

  318. and then he would report back,

  319. he would hear back from them,

  320. he would send letters, right?

  321. And to continue to encourage

  322. to be able to do.

  323. And so Paul gets this report

  324. from Chloe's people

  325. that says,

  326. hey, there's factions in the church.

  327. Paul's like, really?

  328. Like, yeah, and some of them

  329. are like, no, no, no, no,

  330. we only follow Paul.

  331. We only follow Paul.

  332. And I can imagine the heartbreak

  333. of what we see from scripture

  334. consistently with the heart of Paul

  335. for the gospel.

  336. And look at how Paul,

  337. and we're going to talk about this

  338. in a little bit,

  339. look how he tries to address this issue

  340. in scripture.

  341. He says, was Paul crucified for you?

  342. Were you baptized in Paul's name?

  343. The humility of what's there.

  344. And church, we're going to follow leaders.

  345. And we're going to follow pastors.

  346. And Paul's not perfect.

  347. And Paul's not Jesus.

  348. And every pastor that I know,

  349. including the one standing here,

  350. is filled with struggles,

  351. with doubt,

  352. with sin,

  353. with battles that they face.

  354. But if that pastor

  355. ever doesn't embrace

  356. the humility

  357. of what Paul says here,

  358. he's no longer worthy

  359. to be the pastor that we follow.

  360. Was it Paul that crucified you?

  361. Were you baptized in Paul's name?

  362. Obviously, you know that's not true.

  363. It's ego

  364. that we follow.

  365. The second thing

  366. that we begin to see

  367. that brings disunity,

  368. this anti-authority.

  369. Right?

  370. While Christ is the leader

  371. of the church,

  372. Christ leads the church,

  373. and Christ is the leader

  374. of this church.

  375. Right?

  376. God does give us leaders

  377. to follow.

  378. He gives us pastors,

  379. elders,

  380. ministers,

  381. and He calls us

  382. as a congregation

  383. and He calls us

  384. as a body

  385. to follow them

  386. and to submit to them

  387. as they seek to lead us

  388. in the way of Christ.

  389. The problem is

  390. for so many of us,

  391. we have a sense of rebellion

  392. that we still want to cling to.

  393. We still have the sense of,

  394. oh, you think you're going

  395. to tell me what to do?

  396. And it's the battle

  397. of the pride of the heart.

  398. That in spite of what I see,

  399. in spite of what God is doing,

  400. that I feel like

  401. that I know what's best for me

  402. and I feel like

  403. I know what's best for you.

  404. Was the leadership

  405. trying to lead

  406. and to keep our eyes

  407. focused on Jesus?

  408. Is our leadership

  409. trying to keep us focused

  410. in on the proclamation

  411. of the gospel

  412. and seeing lost people

  413. come to know the Lord?

  414. Are we there

  415. to glorify Him

  416. in all that we do and say?

  417. If the answer is yes,

  418. then is the leaders

  419. headed in the wrong direction

  420. or are you taking

  421. a secondary issue

  422. and making it primary?

  423. And we all,

  424. all of us,

  425. have to follow leaders.

  426. A danger for leaders

  427. is this.

  428. Ask the leader

  429. who's leading them.

  430. Ask the leader

  431. who they submit to.

  432. And it should be

  433. in the area

  434. that we see

  435. and what we find

  436. in the value

  437. of Scripture

  438. in understanding

  439. authority.

  440. It should be Christ

  441. and others

  442. that are around them.

  443. And then also

  444. what we're going to find

  445. as we read through this

  446. is agendas.

  447. It's agendas.

  448. Now Paul doesn't speak

  449. directly to agendas here,

  450. but we're going to see it

  451. throughout 1 Corinthians

  452. and you see it all

  453. throughout Scripture.

  454. is I'm going to do

  455. what I'm going to do

  456. apart from the unity

  457. of the body.

  458. And it doesn't matter

  459. where the church

  460. is going.

  461. It doesn't matter

  462. what the church

  463. is being a part of.

  464. It's just the choosing

  465. in what I want to do.

  466. And all of this,

  467. all of this comes

  468. from a heart

  469. and a mindset

  470. of taking our eyes

  471. off of Jesus

  472. and putting them

  473. on someone else.

  474. When people talk

  475. about loyalty

  476. to a person

  477. and not a loyalty

  478. to Jesus,

  479. we begin to see

  480. eyes shift.

  481. And so what Paul

  482. wants to do

  483. is he wants

  484. to establish unity

  485. to see that unity

  486. is what's going

  487. to be a part

  488. of the body

  489. of what they're

  490. working toward,

  491. of what they see.

  492. And so much

  493. of what Paul's

  494. going to call them

  495. into unity

  496. is what they

  497. already have.

  498. And so he gives

  499. them three different

  500. reminders.

  501. The first one

  502. that he's going

  503. to see is the

  504. equipping of the church.

  505. Look back in verse 4,

  506. we're going to read

  507. verse 4 through 9.

  508. And this is in

  509. Paul's thanksgiving.

  510. He says,

  511. I give thanks

  512. to my God

  513. always for you.

  514. because of the grace

  515. of God

  516. was given to you

  517. in Christ Jesus.

  518. That in every way

  519. you were enriched

  520. in him

  521. in all speech

  522. in all knowledge

  523. even as the testimony

  524. about Christ

  525. was confirmed

  526. among you.

  527. And then pay

  528. attention to verse 7.

  529. So that you

  530. are not lacking

  531. in any gift

  532. as you wait

  533. for the revealing

  534. of our Lord

  535. Jesus Christ

  536. who will sustain

  537. you to the end

  538. guiltless

  539. in the days

  540. of our Lord

  541. Jesus Christ.

  542. God is faithful

  543. by whom

  544. you are called

  545. into fellowship

  546. of his son

  547. Jesus Christ

  548. our Lord.

  549. Here's the beauty

  550. of what Paul's

  551. telling them

  552. and the beauty

  553. of what we can

  554. cling to today

  555. at Willow Ridge Church.

  556. That the church

  557. at Corinth

  558. and the church

  559. at Willow Ridge

  560. right now

  561. for us

  562. right now

  563. in this moment

  564. and right then

  565. for them

  566. we have all

  567. that we need

  568. to be who God

  569. has called us

  570. to be

  571. and to do

  572. what God's

  573. called us to do.

  574. There's no excuses

  575. for us to not

  576. pursue

  577. the gospel

  578. and the will

  579. of God

  580. in our lives

  581. and in our congregation.

  582. Paul says that

  583. you are not lacking

  584. in any gift

  585. any gift

  586. and the truth

  587. is said

  588. for that

  589. for us today

  590. that we are not

  591. lacking

  592. in any gift

  593. that we have.

  594. So what do we have?

  595. What do we have

  596. that the church

  597. at Corinth had?

  598. Number one

  599. we got the Holy Spirit.

  600. Paul established

  601. for all of these

  602. because of the grace

  603. of God

  604. was given to you

  605. in Christ Jesus

  606. and then what happens

  607. when we are saved

  608. that the Holy Spirit

  609. of God

  610. indwells

  611. within us.

  612. the same Holy Spirit

  613. of God

  614. indwelled Paul

  615. indwells you

  616. indwells me

  617. indwells the church

  618. at Corinth.

  619. So you got the Spirit

  620. of God.

  621. You got part of the Trinity

  622. in you.

  623. It's everything

  624. that you need.

  625. That's everything

  626. that is required.

  627. That within you

  628. because the goodness

  629. of God

  630. is his Holy Spirit

  631. but also

  632. and I think this is

  633. one of the most

  634. beautiful things

  635. of what God

  636. blesses the church

  637. with.

  638. All right?

  639. You got each other.

  640. You got each other

  641. and that's beautiful.

  642. That's beautiful.

  643. Every single one

  644. of you

  645. sitting in here

  646. today

  647. is a gift

  648. of God

  649. to each

  650. and every

  651. one

  652. of us.

  653. and the beauty

  654. of this

  655. of what God

  656. gives us

  657. and the people

  658. that God

  659. brings us

  660. to be a part

  661. of the body

  662. here

  663. is the diversity

  664. that he gives.

  665. Right?

  666. He brings us

  667. the diversity

  668. of gifts.

  669. Right?

  670. There's a few

  671. of us

  672. that can come

  673. on stage

  674. and do

  675. what they

  676. do.

  677. There's a few

  678. of us

  679. that can come

  680. on stage

  681. and do

  682. what I do.

  683. There's a few

  684. of us

  685. that can go

  686. into the kitchen

  687. and do

  688. what they do.

  689. There's a few

  690. of us

  691. who can go

  692. and stand

  693. out the doors

  694. and do

  695. what they do.

  696. There's a few

  697. of us

  698. that can gather

  699. in these rooms

  700. and do

  701. what they do

  702. and what God's

  703. doing

  704. is he's given

  705. us all

  706. this wonderful

  707. sense of giftedness

  708. among us

  709. so that we can

  710. serve amongst

  711. the body

  712. because we have

  713. all that we need.

  714. The beauty

  715. of what God

  716. gives us

  717. is he gives

  718. us different

  719. perspectives

  720. of life

  721. of what we've

  722. experienced

  723. of what we've

  724. been through

  725. the diversity

  726. of that

  727. in which

  728. that brings

  729. of where

  730. we've come

  731. from

  732. who we've

  733. learned under

  734. how long

  735. we've been

  736. saved

  737. it's a beautiful

  738. diversity

  739. of what God

  740. gives us.

  741. God gives us

  742. a beautiful

  743. diversity

  744. of passions

  745. of what he

  746. brings

  747. and so

  748. some people

  749. are passionate

  750. about school

  751. ministry

  752. some people

  753. are passionate

  754. about kids

  755. ministry

  756. some people

  757. are passionate

  758. about worship

  759. ministry

  760. some people

  761. are passionate

  762. about international

  763. ministries

  764. and God gives us

  765. all of these

  766. different passions

  767. so that men

  768. and women

  769. can find

  770. who they

  771. are

  772. and it's

  773. a beautiful

  774. thing

  775. and all

  776. of these

  777. are used

  778. in a way

  779. to build up

  780. the body

  781. and to share

  782. the gospel

  783. but here's

  784. what gets

  785. dangerous

  786. is what

  787. that when

  788. the gifts

  789. become not

  790. seen as

  791. gifts of

  792. diversity

  793. that are

  794. used together

  795. to unify

  796. but gifts

  797. of difference

  798. that are used

  799. to divide

  800. that when

  801. the gifts

  802. of perspective

  803. are not

  804. there as

  805. differences

  806. to learn

  807. from

  808. but are

  809. there as

  810. areas of

  811. division

  812. we have

  813. concerns

  814. than the

  815. areas of

  816. passions

  817. of ministries

  818. of what

  819. we have

  820. that they

  821. must be

  822. seen as

  823. a diversity

  824. of differences

  825. that can join

  826. us together

  827. to strengthen

  828. and to equip

  829. more ministries

  830. so that more

  831. people could

  832. come to know

  833. Christ

  834. and not

  835. as areas

  836. of disunity

  837. that could be

  838. divided

  839. the second

  840. thing that Paul

  841. shows us

  842. and we

  843. focused on

  844. this

  845. or reminds

  846. us on

  847. is to

  848. focus on

  849. Jesus

  850. why was

  851. Paul crucified

  852. for you

  853. or was

  854. Paul crucified

  855. for you

  856. or were you

  857. baptized in

  858. the name

  859. of Paul

  860. a couple

  861. questions

  862. I want to

  863. ask

  864. why are we

  865. here this

  866. morning

  867. why are we

  868. here

  869. we here

  870. for Jesus

  871. or anything

  872. else

  873. if anything

  874. else

  875. or anyone

  876. else

  877. filled that

  878. answer

  879. we missed

  880. it

  881. we missed

  882. it

  883. and who

  884. are we

  885. following

  886. who are we

  887. following

  888. God's

  889. blessed us

  890. with the

  891. wonderful

  892. privilege of

  893. being able to

  894. be at this

  895. church I

  896. believe we'll

  897. be here for

  898. nine years

  899. this summer

  900. I didn't

  901. have gray hair

  902. in my beard

  903. when I got

  904. here

  905. I had a lot

  906. more hair

  907. on the top

  908. of my head

  909. when I got

  910. here

  911. I don't

  912. blame y'all

  913. for that

  914. I blame

  915. genetics

  916. I just want

  917. to be honest

  918. with you

  919. right

  920. I come

  921. from a

  922. long line

  923. of balding

  924. gray men

  925. right

  926. been here

  927. nine years

  928. the average

  929. stay

  930. of a senior

  931. pastor

  932. in the church

  933. in the United

  934. States right

  935. now is four

  936. years

  937. right

  938. I was reading

  939. a study on

  940. the Barna

  941. group some

  942. of you may

  943. be aware

  944. of them

  945. and from

  946. 2020

  947. until right

  948. now

  949. shows that

  950. 38%

  951. of pastors

  952. 38%

  953. are trying

  954. to figure

  955. out how

  956. to leave

  957. the ministry

  958. all right

  959. and go do

  960. something else

  961. they don't

  962. care they

  963. just don't

  964. know

  965. and they're

  966. dying to

  967. get out

  968. and that's

  969. the danger

  970. of when we

  971. put our

  972. eyes

  973. and focus

  974. solely

  975. on the

  976. people who

  977. stand up

  978. here

  979. right

  980. four

  981. years

  982. 38%

  983. most

  984. churches

  985. when a

  986. pastor

  987. leaves

  988. attendance

  989. declines

  990. dramatically

  991. church

  992. members

  993. fall

  994. to the

  995. side

  996. and I

  997. just have

  998. to ask

  999. the question

  1000. who are

  1001. their eyes

  1002. on

  1003. and focus

  1004. on Jesus

  1005. and the

  1006. last thing

  1007. is be

  1008. gospel

  1009. focused

  1010. read verse

  1011. 17

  1012. for Christ

  1013. did not

  1014. send me

  1015. to baptize

  1016. but to

  1017. preach the

  1018. gospel

  1019. and not

  1020. with words

  1021. of eloquent

  1022. wisdom

  1023. lest the

  1024. cross of

  1025. Christ

  1026. be emptied

  1027. of its

  1028. power

  1029. so this

  1030. Apollos guy

  1031. you can read

  1032. about in Acts

  1033. 18

  1034. here's what we

  1035. can find out

  1036. about this

  1037. guy

  1038. what we

  1039. know

  1040. right

  1041. he's

  1042. entertaining

  1043. he's

  1044. engaging

  1045. he's got

  1046. a crowd

  1047. a crowd

  1048. that loves

  1049. to hear

  1050. him

  1051. a crowd

  1052. that wants

  1053. to follow

  1054. him

  1055. and they

  1056. begin to

  1057. say

  1058. it doesn't

  1059. matter about

  1060. the faithfulness

  1061. of what we

  1062. have

  1063. it doesn't

  1064. matter about

  1065. the vision

  1066. that's there

  1067. we want

  1068. that guy

  1069. because of

  1070. what he can

  1071. bring to

  1072. us

  1073. what he can

  1074. share with

  1075. us

  1076. and the

  1077. talent that

  1078. he has

  1079. and whether

  1080. you stay

  1081. here for

  1082. one more

  1083. Sunday

  1084. or whether

  1085. you stay

  1086. here for

  1087. another

  1088. thousand

  1089. Sundays

  1090. whether God

  1091. grants me

  1092. the wonderful

  1093. opportunity

  1094. which is what

  1095. we pray for

  1096. to retire

  1097. from here

  1098. or whether

  1099. God calls

  1100. me at a

  1101. different time

  1102. I don't

  1103. know

  1104. but when it

  1105. comes to

  1106. preaching of

  1107. God's word

  1108. and let me

  1109. just tell you

  1110. I've been

  1111. so blessed

  1112. to be

  1113. under some

  1114. pastors

  1115. that have

  1116. let me

  1117. swing and

  1118. miss a lot

  1119. more than

  1120. swing and

  1121. hit a

  1122. home run

  1123. okay

  1124. but I want

  1125. you to ask

  1126. these questions

  1127. when you're

  1128. sitting there

  1129. with your

  1130. small group

  1131. leader

  1132. when you're

  1133. sitting there

  1134. in your

  1135. Bible study

  1136. I want you

  1137. to ask

  1138. these questions

  1139. don't let

  1140. the standard

  1141. be

  1142. is he

  1143. entertaining

  1144. is he

  1145. engaging

  1146. is he

  1147. relevant

  1148. is he

  1149. smart

  1150. let the

  1151. question

  1152. that rings

  1153. in your

  1154. mind

  1155. ask this

  1156. is he

  1157. faithful to

  1158. God's word

  1159. is he

  1160. faithful to

  1161. God's word

  1162. I've got a

  1163. friend of

  1164. mine who

  1165. pastors at

  1166. another church

  1167. in another

  1168. state

  1169. and big

  1170. old church

  1171. mega church

  1172. they do like

  1173. seven services

  1174. it's crazy

  1175. he starts

  1176. preaching on

  1177. Saturday night

  1178. and he gets

  1179. done on

  1180. Monday it

  1181. feels like

  1182. anyway

  1183. he was

  1184. talking to

  1185. me and

  1186. there was

  1187. a church

  1188. there in

  1189. their area

  1190. and he was

  1191. really curious

  1192. about what

  1193. they were

  1194. doing and

  1195. so he

  1196. he went

  1197. there to

  1198. the church

  1199. and he

  1200. knew some

  1201. of the

  1202. people that

  1203. were on

  1204. leadership

  1205. that were

  1206. at this

  1207. church

  1208. and he's

  1209. like I

  1210. was just

  1211. really

  1212. curious

  1213. and so

  1214. I went

  1215. and I'm

  1216. not going to

  1217. use any

  1218. names but

  1219. just want to

  1220. kind of share

  1221. this with

  1222. you guys

  1223. and I said

  1224. well what

  1225. did you learn

  1226. and he said

  1227. you know my

  1228. wife and I

  1229. we went

  1230. and then we

  1231. left and we

  1232. went out to

  1233. eat and we

  1234. we were

  1235. just kind

  1236. of processing

  1237. through ways

  1238. we could

  1239. learn and

  1240. ways we

  1241. could get

  1242. better and

  1243. he said

  1244. here is the

  1245. realization that

  1246. we came

  1247. to he

  1248. said during

  1249. that service

  1250. we laughed

  1251. during that

  1252. service we

  1253. felt compelled

  1254. to move

  1255. to take

  1256. action

  1257. during that

  1258. service we

  1259. got angry

  1260. during that

  1261. service we

  1262. cried

  1263. some pretty

  1264. strong

  1265. emotions

  1266. to be

  1267. experienced

  1268. for sadness

  1269. to hit you

  1270. for laughter

  1271. to hit you

  1272. for tears

  1273. to come

  1274. from you

  1275. to feel

  1276. compelled

  1277. to action

  1278. and I

  1279. said well

  1280. man that

  1281. was fantastic

  1282. and he

  1283. said but

  1284. the problem

  1285. was

  1286. is that he

  1287. opened God's

  1288. word

  1289. he read

  1290. a few

  1291. verses

  1292. and he

  1293. never came

  1294. back to

  1295. it

  1296. and he

  1297. wasn't

  1298. faithful

  1299. and he

  1300. wasn't

  1301. faithful

  1302. as a

  1303. preacher

  1304. verse 17

  1305. has hit me

  1306. hard

  1307. for Christ

  1308. did not

  1309. send me to

  1310. baptize but

  1311. to preach

  1312. the gospel

  1313. and not

  1314. with words

  1315. of eloquent

  1316. wisdom

  1317. listen to

  1318. this

  1319. lest the

  1320. cross of

  1321. Christ

  1322. be emptied

  1323. of its

  1324. power

  1325. we got to

  1326. be careful

  1327. that the

  1328. standard of

  1329. teaching of

  1330. God's word

  1331. is not the

  1332. standard of a

  1333. politician

  1334. trying to lure

  1335. us with their

  1336. words to buy

  1337. into something

  1338. but to

  1339. understand

  1340. that the

  1341. gospel

  1342. it's

  1343. enough

  1344. and it's

  1345. all that's

  1346. needed

  1347. Jesus Christ

  1348. the son of

  1349. God

  1350. came here

  1351. and died

  1352. for you

  1353. to pay the

  1354. price for

  1355. your sins

  1356. the price

  1357. that you

  1358. don't want

  1359. to pay

  1360. the price

  1361. that you

  1362. can't pay

  1363. and was

  1364. buried

  1365. and was

  1366. raised to

  1367. life

  1368. three days

  1369. later

  1370. and lived

  1371. and ascended

  1372. to the

  1373. father

  1374. and for

  1375. those who

  1376. surrender

  1377. and put

  1378. their faith

  1379. and hope

  1380. and trust

  1381. in him

  1382. are guaranteed

  1383. the inheritance

  1384. of eternal

  1385. life

  1386. as we go

  1387. into this

  1388. season of

  1389. our church

  1390. going to

  1391. our small

  1392. groups

  1393. small group

  1394. leaders

  1395. be faithful

  1396. just be

  1397. faithful

  1398. as you

  1399. open up

  1400. your

  1401. God's word

  1402. every morning

  1403. whether you're

  1404. working through

  1405. first Corinthians

  1406. with us

  1407. don't open

  1408. it

  1409. saying

  1410. God

  1411. entertain

  1412. me

  1413. open it

  1414. knowing

  1415. that God

  1416. will be

  1417. faithful

  1418. his word

  1419. is living

  1420. and is

  1421. powerful

  1422. and whether

  1423. God blesses

  1424. me with

  1425. another

  1426. 25 years

  1427. 25 days

  1428. let the

  1429. standard

  1430. be

  1431. is

  1432. he

  1433. faithful

  1434. to

  1435. Christ

  1436. would you

  1437. pray with

  1438. me

  1439. Lord we

  1440. come to

  1441. you this

  1442. morning

  1443. Lord

  1444. thanking you

  1445. for the

  1446. beauty of

  1447. your word

  1448. and the

  1449. truth that

  1450. comes from

  1451. it

  1452. Lord I

  1453. pray for

  1454. us as a

  1455. body

  1456. that we

  1457. would be

  1458. unified

  1459. completely

  1460. and fully

  1461. in you

  1462. of who

  1463. you are

  1464. or what

  1465. you've

  1466. done

  1467. Lord may

  1468. we keep

  1469. our eyes

  1470. focused

  1471. on the

  1472. primary

  1473. Christ

  1474. you

  1475. Lord

  1476. we keep

  1477. our eyes

  1478. focused

  1479. that we

  1480. are

  1481. surrounded

  1482. by people

  1483. who don't

  1484. know you

  1485. and who

  1486. have never

  1487. had the

  1488. opportunity

  1489. to respond

  1490. to the

  1491. gospel of

  1492. Jesus

  1493. Christ

  1494. Lord may

  1495. we not

  1496. be okay

  1497. with that

  1498. or could

  1499. we be

  1500. reminded

  1501. that every

  1502. Sunday

  1503. we have the

  1504. opportunity

  1505. on Sunday

  1506. mornings and

  1507. Sunday nights

  1508. to pour

  1509. into the

  1510. lives

  1511. of kids

  1512. and students

  1513. who are

  1514. journeying

  1515. through a

  1516. world that

  1517. is demanding

  1518. their

  1519. allegiance

  1520. in many

  1521. different

  1522. ways

  1523. Lord and

  1524. they will

  1525. make a

  1526. choice

  1527. choosing

  1528. what to

  1529. follow

  1530. may we

  1531. be

  1532. unified

  1533. and that

  1534. it is

  1535. Christ

  1536. may we

  1537. work

  1538. toward

  1539. that

  1540. Lord may

  1541. we be

  1542. unified

  1543. that all

  1544. over this

  1545. world are

  1546. men and

  1547. women and

  1548. children who

  1549. woke up

  1550. this morning

  1551. never hearing

  1552. the name of

  1553. Jesus

  1554. and no

  1555. opportunity

  1556. to go hear

  1557. about him

  1558. Lord can we

  1559. not be okay

  1560. with that

  1561. Lord all

  1562. the other

  1563. things

  1564. that seek

  1565. to divide

  1566. may we

  1567. push them

  1568. to the

  1569. side

  1570. because our

  1571. eyes are

  1572. focused on

  1573. you

  1574. Lord I

  1575. pray for

  1576. wisdom

  1577. for myself

  1578. for our

  1579. other pastors

  1580. for our

  1581. elders

  1582. for our

  1583. ministry

  1584. leaders

  1585. for all

  1586. of us

  1587. who take

  1588. the

  1589. opportunity

  1590. to teach

  1591. your word

  1592. to facilitate

  1593. a lesson

  1594. Lord may

  1595. we not

  1596. feel like

  1597. we need

  1598. to be a

  1599. politician

  1600. trying to

  1601. convince you

  1602. of our

  1603. way

  1604. instead

  1605. could we

  1606. be men

  1607. and women

  1608. who are

  1609. faithful

  1610. to the

  1611. inerrancy

  1612. of your

  1613. word

  1614. that

  1615. stands

  1616. the test

  1617. of time

  1618. and that

  1619. rings

  1620. true

  1621. Jesus

  1622. may we

  1623. keep our

  1624. eyes

  1625. fixed

  1626. on you

  1627. amen

  1628. we've got

  1629. prayer

  1630. encouragers

  1631. on either

  1632. side

  1633. of our

  1634. auditorium

  1635. maybe this

  1636. morning

  1637. you want to

  1638. talk to

  1639. somebody

  1640. maybe you

  1641. came in

  1642. here with a

  1643. struggle

  1644. with a

  1645. doubt

  1646. with a

  1647. concern

  1648. they would

  1649. love to

  1650. pray with

  1651. you

  1652. love to

  1653. encourage

  1654. you

  1655. maybe this

  1656. morning

  1657. you walked

  1658. in

  1659. you want

  1660. to find out

  1661. a little bit

  1662. more about

  1663. this guy

  1664. named

  1665. Jesus

  1666. what it

  1667. means for

  1668. him to be

  1669. your savior

  1670. and Lord

  1671. that tug

  1672. that you're

  1673. feeling at

  1674. your heart

  1675. here's what

  1676. we're going

  1677. to ask

  1678. that you

  1679. do

  1680. that you

  1681. respond

  1682. to that

  1683. leading

  1684. of the

  1685. Lord

  1686. great way

  1687. to do

  1688. that is

  1689. to let

  1690. either one

  1691. of them

  1692. know

  1693. or

  1694. I'll be

  1695. down here

  1696. down front

  1697. and we

  1698. can talk

  1699. with you

  1700. we can

  1701. pray with

  1702. you

  1703. we just

  1704. want you

  1705. to respond

  1706. to the

  1707. Lord's

  1708. calling

  1709. this

  1710. morning

  1711. would you

  1712. guys all

  1713. stand

  1714. as we

  1715. worship

  1716. thanks again

  1717. for listening
