  1. Hi, and welcome to the Willow Ridge Church weekly podcast.

  2. This is where you can find audio for our current and past sermons.

  3. We hope that you enjoy this week's installment,

  4. and be sure to check back next week to hear the latest message.

  5. Thanks for listening.

  6. Well, good morning.

  7. Glad that you guys, excuse me, are with us today.

  8. If you've got your Bibles with you, going to open them up to Ruth chapter 1

    Ruth 1 chapter mention

  9. is where we are going to be.

  10. As you turn there, it's the first Sunday of the month,

  11. and so we'll be taking the Lord's Supper together at the very end of the service together this morning.

  12. And so if you didn't grab your elements as you came in, please take the time now.

  13. Head back to the back.

  14. You can grab some of those for those that came with you.

  15. And like I said, we'll give some instructions for those as we get there.

  16. Well, I'm excited that we are now fully into, we're going to be going verse by verse through the book of Ruth over the next several weeks.

  17. Last week, we kind of did an introduction where we kind of hit some of the themes that we're going to work through.

  18. And then this morning, as we just sang that song, it's a reminder of one of our themes that we're going to go through.

  19. And so before we get to where we're going, I want us to kind of preface it with a little bit through the words of Jesus.

  20. And so I'm going to read to you out of Matthew chapter 7.

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  21. I want to read several verses as Jesus is teaching, and he says this.

  22. Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.

  23. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.

  24. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.

  25. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat against that house, and it fell.

  26. And great was the fall of it.

  27. I read that passage to you before we get into Ruth this morning, because I feel like there's this tension in the lives of those who profess themselves and call themselves to be believers and followers of Jesus Christ.

  28. And that for so many of us, where we come to is a conditional faith.

  29. I'm standing there thinking about this morning.

  30. I've been in ministry now for, whew, 21 years of my life.

  31. And as I've walked through ministry, what I see so often in the lives of people who profess themselves to be believers,

  32. is that when the rain comes, when the winds blow, when the floods rise, they check out.

  33. When they walk away, they desert.

  34. When we look at this passage of Scripture, there's the wise and the foolish.

  35. Different outcomes happen in their life.

  36. But the same thing happens to both of them.

  37. The storms come.

  38. Oftentimes, a garbage that is taught from pulpits, that's embraced by many believers,

  39. is that when we give our lives to the Lord, our lives become easy.

  40. If we're faithful to the Lord, then our lives will always be pleasant.

  41. That if we're truly devoted followers of Jesus Christ, then what comes our way is prosperity in its many different forms.

  42. But Jesus doesn't say that.

  43. The Bible doesn't say that.

  44. And what we're going to get into, Ruth, over the next four weeks, definitely doesn't lead us there.

  45. That the storms come.

  46. The rain falls.

  47. The wind beats.

  48. The flood rises.

  49. And what matters is the foundation.

  50. What matters is where our faith is rooted in.

  51. You see, it doesn't take away the storm, but it lets us press on through the storm.

  52. Right?

  53. And so as we look at this, as we look at Ruth, like, it's going to cause us to wrestle with how we view ourselves.

  54. It's going to wrestle with how we view our lives.

  55. And I'm going to be honest with you.

  56. It's going to wrestle with how we view the Lord.

  57. And we're going to see his faithfulness.

  58. So let's start reading Ruth chapter 1, starting in verse 1.

    Ruth 1 chapter mention

  59. Read verses 1 through 5.

  60. In the days when the judges ruled, there was a famine in the land, and a man of Bethlehem and Judah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he and his wife and his two sons.

  61. And the name of the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife, Naomi.

  62. And the names of his two sons were Malan and Chilion, and they were Ephratites from Bethlehem and Judah.

  63. They went into the country of Moab and remained there.

  64. But Elimelech, the husband of Naomi, died.

  65. She was left with her two sons.

  66. These took Moabite wives.

  67. The names of one was Orpah, and the name of the other, Ruth.

  68. They lived there about ten years.

  69. And both Malan and Chilion died.

  70. So that the woman was left without her two sons and her husband.

  71. Let's pause there for a few moments.

  72. Well, these first five verses kind of set a tone.

  73. And I think we could all agree as we read through this, it's not a good tone.

  74. But I want to remind us what we're going to see, what we're going to experience,

  75. and what we're going to walk through over these four chapters.

  76. That even when the beginning of this tone isn't good,

  77. we can be reminded of the faithfulness and providence of God, both in and through sorrow.

  78. That what we're going to see in here is that even though we're in sorrow,

  79. even though we're going through sorrow,

  80. like we can all yes and amen,

  81. and we're going to understand a little bit more of what's happening here in these first five verses.

  82. None of us are signing up for this intentionally.

  83. None of us desire this.

  84. But what we will see is the faithfulness and the providence of God,

  85. both in the sorrow and through the sorrow.

  86. So let's look at a handful of things from these five verses

  87. that help us understand exactly what is happening in this story.

  88. Well, the first verse tells us that the story of Ruth happens during the time of the Judges.

  89. Now, the book of Judges is the book right before this.

  90. And if you want to read through this in your quiet time,

  91. I would encourage you to do so as we journey through this.

  92. But the book of Judges largely is a time of failure for the people of Israel, for God's people.

  93. And as you read through the book of Judges, you will see a pattern that unfolds.

  94. And here is the pattern in simple terms.

  95. God's people sin,

  96. And then God in his justice gives them over to an enemy.

  97. And this nation, this people, rules over God's people.

  98. And then eventually, God's people cry out to him to save them.

  99. And so God in his justice has turned them over.

  100. And now God in his mercy raises up a judge who delivers them and saves them.

  101. And if you've read through Judges,

  102. and I was thinking, I think it was a couple of years ago that we walked through that together as a church

  103. where we looked at the different judges that God sends.

  104. What you see is that there's a season of peace

  105. until God's people fall into a pattern of sin.

  106. And then the process starts all over again, right?

  107. It honestly feels like doing laundry at my house, you know?

  108. Like, y'all know that feeling when all the hampers are empty

  109. except for the clothes that you're wearing, right?

  110. That's the only dirty thing.

  111. And then the next day, it's filled up and overflowing again, right?

  112. Like, how did we get back here, right?

  113. Like, this feels like God's people, right?

  114. Just coming over and over and over again.

  115. So as we read through this,

  116. we'll know that this is the pattern that we're going to see

  117. and that we're going to experience in the people.

  118. But then also that it tells us that there was a famine in the land, all right?

  119. I laughed at myself this morning because I thought of this.

  120. Erin will laugh at me as well because she knows that I do stuff like this.

  121. So a few months ago, we realized that we needed pasta, all right?

  122. We needed spaghetti pasta.

  123. And I didn't care.

  124. Angel hair pasta, thin pasta, thick spaghetti pasta.

  125. It didn't matter.

  126. We needed like a box of pasta.

  127. And so I go to the grocery store to get pasta.

  128. And I couldn't find it.

  129. I could find elbow macaroni.

  130. They had the multicolored corkscrew stuff.

  131. They had the lasagna.

  132. They had gluten-free but not going there, right?

  133. But no spaghetti.

  134. And I panicked.

  135. I panicked.

  136. And I went to three different grocery stores.

  137. No spaghetti, no spaghetti, no spaghetti, no spaghetti, right?

  138. And then I went to another grocery store and I found spaghetti.

  139. And I bought 12 pounds of it.

  140. Now, not my greatest moment, right?

  141. Erin's nodding her head, right?

  142. She's like, yep, that's my husband, right?

  143. But that's what we do, right?

  144. In South Carolina, it's going to get below 40 degrees with a slight chance of rain

  145. and try to find milk or bread at the store, right?

  146. It's gone.

  147. It's gone, right?

  148. Now, we live through moments of inconvenience in where we live.

  149. No greater struggle than not being able to find spaghetti, right?

  150. But they're going through famine.

  151. They're going through famine.

  152. There's discussions in the Bible, and we can see things in different areas,

  153. even in the world in which we live, where famine means death.

  154. There's no food to eat, and the people die.

  155. And we see from the very beginning on of this story

  156. that that's the dynamic that Naomi and her family,

  157. where they find themselves.

  158. And this is going to be an important piece.

  159. That Naomi, I believe, as she's walking through this,

  160. Naomi, who is living in the time of the judges,

  161. we don't exactly know when in that period of Israel's history that we find Naomi,

  162. but she knows the patterns, and she knows God's Word.

  163. In Leviticus 26, and I apologize, it's not on the screen,

  164. verses 3 and 4, God says,

  165. if you walk in my statutes and observe my commandments and do them,

  166. then I will give you your rains in their season,

  167. and the land shall yield its increase,

  168. and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit.

  169. Naomi knows who's bringing on the famine.

  170. You see, part of this story of what we're walking through

  171. is Naomi knows that she's going through these difficulties of what's there.

  172. She knows where the difficulties are coming from.

  173. The difficulties are coming from the Lord.

  174. And so from the very beginning,

  175. Naomi's going to struggle and wrestle with this.

  176. And we wrestle with this as well.

  177. That even though things are bad, God is still in control.

  178. And that God even causes and uses things that we think are bad

  179. to draw us to Him and to grow our faith.

  180. You see, God uses storms and rain and wind and floods

  181. to bring those into our life,

  182. to draw us closer to Him,

  183. to build our faith in Him,

  184. and to lay our roots in who He is.

  185. Our God is a God who both manages calamity

  186. and manages the rescue from it as well.

  187. We've got to understand this as we read through Ruth.

  188. That this is the tension that we're going to see,

  189. the tension that we're going to feel.

  190. It's what they've experienced and judges, right?

  191. It continues on.

  192. So things are bad.

  193. So Naomi, with all of her family, they go to Moab.

  194. Now God has said,

  195. stay away from places like Moab.

  196. And I want to talk about what some people think

  197. and what we believe and what we feel like Scripture points to.

  198. Some people have used this as a racial dynamic.

  199. God says,

  200. do not go to Moab because of the mixing of the races that could exist.

  201. But it's not a race issue that we see.

  202. It's a religious matter.

  203. You see,

  204. Moabs were pagan in a common practice with God's people

  205. where they were holy and set apart,

  206. but yet they continue to intermarry within those that were pagans.

  207. And what would continually happen more times than not

  208. is those who were followers of the Lord

  209. would bring in the concepts of the pagans, right?

  210. It's what we saw as we walked through our series in 1 Corinthians

  211. of we're to be different.

  212. We're to be set apart.

  213. And so God says,

  214. don't go there.

  215. Don't do this.

  216. And so as we're building through these first several things here,

  217. right, things are bad for Naomi.

  218. There's this great famine in her homeland.

  219. They're fleeing to a foreign country that says,

  220. God says, don't go.

  221. But then things get worse.

  222. If you feel like famine isn't bad enough,

  223. packing up and going to the land you're not supposed to go to

  224. as if it isn't bad enough.

  225. And when they get there,

  226. things get worse.

  227. Elimelech, her husband's die.

  228. Her sons marry women.

  229. Now we're going to see the redemption in this,

  230. but in this for Naomi in the beginning,

  231. her sons marry daughters that culturally

  232. they're not supposed to marry.

  233. Her sons die,

  234. and there's no children,

  235. no more of her own,

  236. and none of theirs.

  237. And this happens

  238. over the course of 10 years.

  239. You're talking about like a difficult stretch to go through.

  240. Like we're not talking about a bad weekend.

  241. We're not talking about a bad week.

  242. We're not talking about a bad year.

  243. We're not even talking about a bad season.

  244. We're talking about a bad decade.

  245. And we're time and time again,

  246. what we see in the life of Naomi.

  247. Now,

  248. now if the story ended here,

  249. five verses in,

  250. right?

  251. Then there isn't much hope for the story.

  252. But,

  253. but the life of Naomi,

  254. what we see in the book of Ruth,

  255. is the reminder of the faithfulness

  256. and the providence of God

  257. in and through sorrow.

  258. And it's beginning the framework

  259. of the storm.

  260. It's given us the framework

  261. of the flood

  262. so that we can see all

  263. that God is going to do.

  264. let's,

  265. let's talk about this life.

  266. Let's talk about your life.

  267. Let's talk about my life.

  268. Now,

  269. if we use comparisons,

  270. I would agree

  271. that the events of life

  272. are seemingly easier

  273. for some than others,

  274. right?

  275. Like we can all see that.

  276. We can see people

  277. who we feel like in their life,

  278. they've got it a little bit easier than us.

  279. And we see

  280. and we look at other people's

  281. whose lives

  282. and we recognize

  283. that we have it

  284. a little easier than them.

  285. But the truth of life is this.

  286. Life is hard for everyone.

  287. All of us

  288. go through these battles,

  289. whether you're a believer or not.

  290. All of us walk through

  291. moments and days

  292. and weeks

  293. and seasons

  294. and years of difficulty.

  295. All of us walk through

  296. and experience that.

  297. And what we have to glean to

  298. is us as believers

  299. who are to be different

  300. in this world

  301. is this.

  302. Do we trust

  303. who God is

  304. during all of the seasons

  305. of life?

  306. During all of the decades

  307. of life?

  308. During all of the years

  309. of life?

  310. Or

  311. the moment the wind blows,

  312. the moment the rain falls,

  313. the moment the flood rise,

  314. we go,

  315. now I'm out.

  316. I'm out.

  317. who are we going to be?

  318. And so do we trust God

  319. but then also,

  320. and this is the part

  321. that we're going to begin

  322. to see

  323. in Ruth herself,

  324. do we live

  325. as one who trusts God

  326. in all seasons?

  327. Do we live

  328. as the one who trusts God

  329. in all seasons?

  330. Like it's very easy

  331. for us to say,

  332. I trust the Lord.

  333. But is that the marking

  334. of our life?

  335. Is it the tangible evidence

  336. of who we are

  337. and what is there,

  338. right?

  339. And so Naomi

  340. is a woman

  341. who is honest

  342. about her life.

  343. This is what I appreciate

  344. about her.

  345. She is honest

  346. about her life

  347. and where she is

  348. with the Lord,

  349. right?

  350. She doesn't sugarcoat it,

  351. right?

  352. So let's look at

  353. what happens

  354. in verse 6.

  355. It says,

  356. and then she arose

  357. with her daughters-in-law

  358. to return

  359. from the country

  360. of Moab

  361. for she had heard

  362. in the fields

  363. of Moab

  364. that the Lord

  365. had visited

  366. his people

  367. and given them food.

  368. So Naomi hears

  369. that 10 years later,

  370. right?

  371. The famine is over.

  372. So go to verse 7.

  373. So she set out

  374. from the place

  375. where she was

  376. with her two daughters-in-law

  377. and they went on the way

  378. to return

  379. to the land of Judah.

  380. But Naomi said

  381. to her two daughters-in-law,

  382. go return each of you

  383. to your mother's house

  384. that may the Lord

  385. deal kindly with you

  386. as you have dealt

  387. with the dead

  388. and with me.

  389. Then the Lord grant you

  390. that you may find rest

  391. each of you

  392. in the house

  393. of her husband.

  394. And then she kissed them

  395. and they lifted up

  396. their voices

  397. and wept.

  398. So let's kind of pause

  399. for a second.

  400. Not out of anger

  401. to her daughters-in-law.

  402. Not out of spite.

  403. Naomi's not looking at them

  404. in anger

  405. but out of love

  406. she looks at Ruth.

  407. She looks at Orpah

  408. and says

  409. like your lives

  410. will be better

  411. if you stay here.

  412. So go have a family.

  413. Go find new husbands.

  414. Go be with your family

  415. and kind of look

  416. at this day

  417. as a do-over.

  418. A restart.

  419. A refresh

  420. from where you've been

  421. and where I have to go.

  422. In verse 10

  423. and they said to her

  424. no we will return

  425. with you

  426. to your people.

  427. But Naomi said

  428. turn back my daughters

  429. why will you go with me?

  430. Have I yet sons

  431. in my womb

  432. that may become

  433. your husbands?

  434. Turn back my daughters

  435. go your way

  436. for I am too old

  437. to have a husband.

  438. If I should say

  439. I have hope

  440. even if I should

  441. have a husband

  442. this night

  443. and should bear sons

  444. would you therefore

  445. wait till they were grown?

  446. Would you therefore

  447. refrain from marrying?

  448. No my daughters

  449. for it is exceedingly

  450. bitter to me

  451. for your sake

  452. that the hand of the Lord

  453. has gone out

  454. against me.

  455. And so what I want us

  456. to look at here

  457. is the reality

  458. of misery

  459. in the life

  460. of a believer.

  461. You have some things

  462. that Naomi

  463. is working with here.

  464. We're going to see

  465. the faith

  466. we're going to see

  467. the belief

  468. we're going to see

  469. all of these things

  470. from Naomi

  471. but the reality

  472. is where she

  473. finds herself

  474. in this moment

  475. is stuck in misery.

  476. She's down

  477. she's depressed

  478. she feels lost

  479. and abandoned

  480. and I don't know

  481. about you

  482. but have you ever

  483. felt like

  484. everybody

  485. just get away

  486. from me

  487. because everything

  488. I touch

  489. just falls apart.

  490. And Naomi

  491. in the midst

  492. of her depression

  493. in the midst

  494. of where she

  495. finds herself

  496. this is what

  497. she says

  498. just stay

  499. away

  500. go

  501. my daughters

  502. go away

  503. from me

  504. and we see

  505. the misery

  506. of Naomi.

  507. In spite of all

  508. that Naomi

  509. has experienced

  510. in her walk

  511. with the Lord

  512. in spite of all

  513. that she has

  514. walked through

  515. in the past.

  516. She knows

  517. the story

  518. of the exodus.

  519. She knows

  520. God's faithfulness.

  521. She knows

  522. who he is.

  523. She knows

  524. what he can do

  525. in spite of

  526. all of that.

  527. She knows

  528. his mercy.

  529. She knows

  530. his faithfulness.

  531. She knows

  532. his miracles.

  533. She knows

  534. his promises.

  535. She knows

  536. his deliverance.

  537. She can't

  538. see beyond

  539. the last

  540. ten years

  541. of her life.

  542. She finds

  543. herself stuck

  544. there.

  545. The stories

  546. of the

  547. chapters

  548. of who

  549. God is

  550. are not

  551. what's

  552. fresh

  553. and it's

  554. the reality

  555. that she's

  556. lived in

  557. to go away.

  558. And I think

  559. it's important

  560. for us to

  561. remember

  562. that when

  563. times of

  564. struggle

  565. in our

  566. lives

  567. come

  568. it doesn't

  569. change

  570. who God

  571. is

  572. but the

  573. times that

  574. we face

  575. can change

  576. what we

  577. remember

  578. about him

  579. and how

  580. we see

  581. him.

  582. Right?

  583. As somebody

  584. that's walked

  585. through their

  586. own battles

  587. with depression

  588. and anxiety

  589. and the

  590. frustrations

  591. of this

  592. life

  593. who's felt

  594. lost and

  595. abandoned

  596. and cast

  597. out

  598. who's felt

  599. like he's

  600. being punished

  601. for the

  602. things that

  603. have been

  604. done

  605. like trust

  606. me

  607. you can

  608. walk

  609. through

  610. the times

  611. of struggle

  612. and it

  613. begin to

  614. affect

  615. all that

  616. you know

  617. all that

  618. you've

  619. been taught

  620. all that

  621. you've

  622. walked

  623. through

  624. but it

  625. can change

  626. what we

  627. remember

  628. about God

  629. and how

  630. we see

  631. him.

  632. And that's

  633. where we

  634. find Naomi

  635. and so

  636. what we

  637. see in

  638. her

  639. in this

  640. is the

  641. perception

  642. of hope

  643. lost.

  644. Naomi thinks

  645. like it's

  646. done

  647. there's no

  648. hope for

  649. my life

  650. there's no

  651. future for

  652. my life

  653. and if

  654. you come

  655. with me

  656. then there's

  657. no hope

  658. there's no

  659. future for

  660. you as

  661. well

  662. because hope

  663. for Naomi

  664. would be

  665. found

  666. in the

  667. sun

  668. and her

  669. husband

  670. is

  671. gone

  672. her

  673. sons

  674. are

  675. gone

  676. she

  677. has

  678. no

  679. other

  680. sons

  681. there's

  682. no

  683. grandsons

  684. there's

  685. no hope

  686. in the

  687. future

  688. for that

  689. and so

  690. in that

  691. her

  692. protection

  693. her

  694. safety

  695. her means

  696. to provide

  697. for herself

  698. they're

  699. all

  700. gone

  701. and it

  702. may seem

  703. weird

  704. for us

  705. but we

  706. talked last

  707. week a little

  708. bit about a

  709. Jewish custom

  710. that I want

  711. to bring

  712. back up

  713. this week

  714. known as

  715. the kinsman

  716. redeemer

  717. and here

  718. was the

  719. custom

  720. a little

  721. bit more

  722. fleshed

  723. out

  724. and we'll

  725. look at

  726. a little

  727. bit more

  728. in a couple

  729. weeks

  730. but the

  731. custom

  732. said that

  733. if a

  734. man

  735. died

  736. then his

  737. brothers

  738. or a

  739. close

  740. family

  741. member

  742. was

  743. supposed

  744. to marry

  745. the widow

  746. in order

  747. to preserve

  748. the name

  749. of the dead

  750. man

  751. and to care

  752. for her

  753. so when

  754. Naomi

  755. says to

  756. her daughters

  757. like your

  758. sons are

  759. dead

  760. and I

  761. have no

  762. more

  763. sons

  764. what she's

  765. saying is

  766. there's no

  767. hope for

  768. you in

  769. marriage

  770. so you're

  771. going to be

  772. right where

  773. I am

  774. with just

  775. more years

  776. to live

  777. through it

  778. and I say

  779. it's the

  780. perception

  781. because Naomi's

  782. depression

  783. where she

  784. is has

  785. driven her

  786. and she's

  787. forgotten

  788. about the

  789. Lord

  790. she's

  791. forgotten

  792. about the

  793. options

  794. she's

  795. forgotten

  796. about what

  797. God can

  798. do

  799. she's

  800. forgotten

  801. about

  802. Boaz

  803. of what

  804. we're

  805. going to

  806. see

  807. and so

  808. many times

  809. I find

  810. in the

  811. life of

  812. a believer

  813. that when

  814. we're

  815. walking

  816. through

  817. this

  818. seasons

  819. the

  820. reality

  821. of what

  822. is truth

  823. before us

  824. creates

  825. within

  826. us

  827. a misleading

  828. perception

  829. that hope

  830. is gone

  831. and so we

  832. live our

  833. lives

  834. claiming

  835. to

  836. trust

  837. claiming

  838. to

  839. know

  840. all

  841. of

  842. who

  843. God

  844. is

  845. but

  846. with

  847. the

  848. same

  849. mindset

  850. as

  851. Naomi

  852. look at

  853. verse

  854. 14

  855. then

  856. they

  857. lifted up

  858. their

  859. voices

  860. and

  861. wept

  862. again

  863. and

  864. Orpah

  865. kissed

  866. her

  867. mother-in-law

  868. I love

  869. these words

  870. but Ruth

  871. clung to

  872. her

  873. and she

  874. said

  875. see

  876. your

  877. sister-in-law

  878. has gone

  879. back to

  880. her people

  881. and to

  882. her gods

  883. return

  884. after your

  885. sister-in-law

  886. but Ruth

  887. said

  888. do not

  889. urge me

  890. to leave

  891. you

  892. or to

  893. return

  894. from

  895. following

  896. you

  897. so where

  898. you go

  899. I will

  900. go

  901. and where

  902. you lodge

  903. I will

  904. lodge

  905. your people

  906. shall be

  907. my people

  908. and my

  909. God

  910. your God

  911. where you

  912. die

  913. I will

  914. die

  915. and there

  916. I will

  917. be buried

  918. may

  919. the

  920. Lord

  921. do

  922. so

  923. to

  924. me

  925. and

  926. more

  927. also

  928. if

  929. anything

  930. but

  931. death

  932. parts

  933. me

  934. from

  935. you

  936. and

  937. where

  938. we

  939. see

  940. in

  941. this

  942. moment

  943. is

  944. Ruth's

  945. faithfulness

  946. we talked

  947. about this

  948. last week

  949. and just

  950. a little

  951. precursor

  952. before we

  953. get into

  954. this

  955. it's

  956. the

  957. continual

  958. reminder

  959. that

  960. God

  961. is

  962. the

  963. hero

  964. of

  965. the

  966. story

  967. God

  968. is

  969. the

  970. hero

  971. of

  972. the

  973. story

  974. God

  975. is

  976. going

  977. to

  978. do

  979. a

  980. work

  981. in

  982. Naomi

  983. God

  984. is

  985. doing

  986. a

  987. work

  988. through

  989. Ruth

  990. God

  991. is

  992. going

  993. to

  994. paint

  995. a

  996. picture

  997. in

  998. the

  999. life

  1000. of

  1001. Boaz

  1002. and

  1003. all

  1004. that

  1005. we're

  1006. going

  1007. to

  1008. see

  1009. but

  1010. the

  1011. hero

  1012. of

  1013. the

  1014. story

  1015. is

  1016. the

  1017. Lord

  1018. and

  1019. what

  1020. we're

  1021. going

  1022. to

  1023. see

  1024. as we

  1025. break

  1026. down

  1027. as we

  1028. look

  1029. through

  1030. this

  1031. covenant

  1032. relationship

  1033. that

  1034. Ruth

  1035. forms

  1036. with

  1037. Naomi

  1038. here

  1039. in

  1040. this

  1041. moment

  1042. it's

  1043. going

  1044. to

  1045. remind

  1046. us

  1047. of

  1048. the

  1049. covenant

  1050. relationship

  1051. of

  1052. what

  1053. God

  1054. has

  1055. with

  1056. us

  1057. so

  1058. let's

  1059. look

  1060. at

  1061. Ruth's

  1062. faithfulness

  1063. she

  1064. says

  1065. to

  1066. Naomi

  1067. I'm

  1068. willing

  1069. to

  1070. leave

  1071. my

  1072. family

  1073. she

  1074. says

  1075. if

  1076. you're

  1077. going

  1078. I'm

  1079. going

  1080. with

  1081. you

  1082. there's

  1083. no

  1084. turning

  1085. back

  1086. she

  1087. embraces

  1088. in

  1089. this

  1090. moment

  1091. widowhood

  1092. and

  1093. childlessness

  1094. forever

  1095. she

  1096. knows

  1097. or

  1098. believes

  1099. that

  1100. there's

  1101. no

  1102. option

  1103. for

  1104. marriage

  1105. for

  1106. her

  1107. and

  1108. she

  1109. knows

  1110. or

  1111. believes

  1112. that

  1113. there's

  1114. no

  1115. opportunity

  1116. for

  1117. her

  1118. to

  1119. have

  1120. a

  1121. child

  1122. and

  1123. she

  1124. says

  1125. this

  1126. where

  1127. you

  1128. die

  1129. I

  1130. will

  1131. die

  1132. Ruth's

  1133. faithfulness

  1134. goes

  1135. beyond

  1136. the

  1137. death

  1138. of

  1139. her

  1140. mother

  1141. in

  1142. law

  1143. it's

  1144. not

  1145. even

  1146. well

  1147. I'll

  1148. go

  1149. with

  1150. you

  1151. and

  1152. when

  1153. you

  1154. die

  1155. then

  1156. I'll

  1157. come

  1158. back

  1159. no

  1160. the

  1161. faithfulness

  1162. of

  1163. what

  1164. she

  1165. has

  1166. she

  1167. says

  1168. when

  1169. you

  1170. die

  1171. there

  1172. I'll

  1173. die

  1174. too

  1175. and

  1176. your

  1177. family

  1178. will

  1179. be

  1180. my

  1181. family

  1182. forever

  1183. and

  1184. then

  1185. the

  1186. beauty

  1187. and

  1188. the

  1189. hope

  1190. of

  1191. this

  1192. Naomi

  1193. had

  1194. told

  1195. Orpah

  1196. to

  1197. go

  1198. back

  1199. to

  1200. her

  1201. little

  1202. g

  1203. gods

  1204. but

  1205. Ruth

  1206. says

  1207. but

  1208. my

  1209. faith

  1210. is

  1211. in

  1212. your

  1213. God

  1214. in

  1215. spite

  1216. of

  1217. all

  1218. that

  1219. we've

  1220. gone

  1221. through

  1222. in

  1223. spite

  1224. of

  1225. all

  1226. that

  1227. we've

  1228. experienced

  1229. in

  1230. spite

  1231. of

  1232. all

  1233. of

  1234. the

  1235. death

  1236. and

  1237. pain

  1238. and

  1239. in

  1240. spite

  1241. of

  1242. what

  1243. no

  1244. longer

  1245. what

  1246. we

  1247. can

  1248. understand

  1249. of

  1250. what

  1251. awaits

  1252. us

  1253. when

  1254. we

  1255. return

  1256. my

  1257. faith

  1258. is

  1259. in

  1260. your

  1261. God

  1262. look at

  1263. verse

  1264. 18

  1265. and

  1266. when

  1267. Naomi

  1268. saw

  1269. that

  1270. she

  1271. was

  1272. determined

  1273. to go

  1274. with

  1275. her

  1276. she

  1277. said

  1278. no

  1279. more

  1280. so

  1281. the

  1282. two

  1283. of

  1284. them

  1285. went

  1286. on

  1287. until

  1288. they

  1289. came

  1290. to

  1291. Bethlehem

  1292. and

  1293. when

  1294. they

  1295. came

  1296. to

  1297. Bethlehem

  1298. the

  1299. whole

  1300. town

  1301. was

  1302. stirred

  1303. because

  1304. of

  1305. them

  1306. and

  1307. the

  1308. women

  1309. said

  1310. is

  1311. this

  1312. Naomi

  1313. and

  1314. she

  1315. said

  1316. to

  1317. them

  1318. do

  1319. not

  1320. call

  1321. me

  1322. Naomi

  1323. call

  1324. me

  1325. Mara

  1326. for

  1327. the

  1328. almighty

  1329. has

  1330. dealt

  1331. very

  1332. bitterly

  1333. with

  1334. me

  1335. I

  1336. went

  1337. away

  1338. full

  1339. and

  1340. the

  1341. Lord

  1342. has

  1343. brought

  1344. me

  1345. back

  1346. empty

  1347. why

  1348. call

  1349. me

  1350. Naomi

  1351. when

  1352. the

  1353. Lord

  1354. has

  1355. testified

  1356. against

  1357. me

  1358. and

  1359. the

  1360. almighty

  1361. has

  1362. brought

  1363. calamity

  1364. upon

  1365. me

  1366. so

  1367. Naomi

  1368. returned

  1369. and

  1370. Ruth

  1371. the

  1372. Moabite

  1373. her

  1374. daughter-in-law

  1375. with her

  1376. who returned

  1377. from the

  1378. country

  1379. of Moab

  1380. and they

  1381. came to

  1382. Bethlehem

  1383. at the

  1384. beginning

  1385. of the

  1386. barley

  1387. harvest

  1388. in this

  1389. passage

  1390. Naomi

  1391. gets a

  1392. couple

  1393. things

  1394. right

  1395. she

  1396. gets a

  1397. couple

  1398. things

  1399. right

  1400. number

  1401. one

  1402. she

  1403. acknowledges

  1404. God

  1405. exists

  1406. this

  1407. is an

  1408. important

  1409. part

  1410. for us

  1411. to

  1412. understand

  1413. there's

  1414. not a

  1415. moment

  1416. in here

  1417. where

  1418. she

  1419. denies

  1420. the

  1421. existence

  1422. and the

  1423. power

  1424. and the

  1425. nature

  1426. of God

  1427. she

  1428. understands

  1429. that

  1430. in the

  1431. midst

  1432. of all

  1433. that's

  1434. happened

  1435. to her

  1436. over

  1437. the

  1438. last

  1439. 10

  1440. years

  1441. that

  1442. God

  1443. is

  1444. God

  1445. and

  1446. that

  1447. he

  1448. exists

  1449. and

  1450. then

  1451. the

  1452. second

  1453. thing

  1454. that

  1455. she

  1456. acknowledges

  1457. that

  1458. she

  1459. gets

  1460. right

  1461. is

  1462. God

  1463. did

  1464. not

  1465. spare

  1466. her

  1467. God

  1468. didn't

  1469. spare

  1470. her

  1471. her

  1472. husband

  1473. died

  1474. she

  1475. walked

  1476. through

  1477. famine

  1478. she

  1479. wandered

  1480. into a

  1481. foreign

  1482. land

  1483. her

  1484. sons

  1485. died

  1486. and now

  1487. in the

  1488. perception

  1489. of where

  1490. she goes

  1491. forward

  1492. it's her

  1493. and her

  1494. daughter-in-law

  1495. and she's

  1496. showing back

  1497. up into

  1498. her hometown

  1499. with everybody

  1500. else

  1501. that I'm

  1502. sure is

  1503. running around

  1504. with their

  1505. kids and

  1506. their grandkids

  1507. and everybody's

  1508. looking at her

  1509. and seeing

  1510. and she

  1511. sees

  1512. the

  1513. prosperity

  1514. of what

  1515. everybody else

  1516. is experiencing

  1517. what everybody else

  1518. is going

  1519. through

  1520. and I don't

  1521. know

  1522. but I feel

  1523. like we're

  1524. probably a

  1525. little bit

  1526. like Naomi

  1527. and she's

  1528. probably

  1529. thinking

  1530. well I'm

  1531. better

  1532. I'm

  1533. better

  1534. than

  1535. them

  1536. then why

  1537. do I

  1538. find

  1539. myself

  1540. where I

  1541. am

  1542. now

  1543. she

  1544. says

  1545. because

  1546. God

  1547. had

  1548. his

  1549. sovereignty

  1550. he

  1551. didn't

  1552. spare

  1553. but here's

  1554. what she

  1555. gets wrong

  1556. here

  1557. in this

  1558. she's

  1559. receptive

  1560. to

  1561. bitterness

  1562. she

  1563. changes

  1564. her name

  1565. and name

  1566. changes

  1567. are big

  1568. in scripture

  1569. you see

  1570. Naomi

  1571. means

  1572. pleasantness

  1573. right

  1574. it's a

  1575. beautiful

  1576. name

  1577. right

  1578. like

  1579. pleasantness

  1580. within

  1581. there

  1582. so she

  1583. left

  1584. that's

  1585. who

  1586. she

  1587. was

  1588. but now

  1589. she

  1590. returns

  1591. and she's

  1592. not pleasant

  1593. anymore

  1594. she's

  1595. now

  1596. Mara

  1597. which

  1598. means

  1599. bitterness

  1600. and so

  1601. she left

  1602. as one

  1603. who's

  1604. pleasant

  1605. and she

  1606. returns

  1607. as one

  1608. who's

  1609. bitter

  1610. and that's

  1611. going to be

  1612. the tension

  1613. that we

  1614. see

  1615. and that

  1616. we

  1617. experience

  1618. now

  1619. we've

  1620. seen

  1621. from

  1622. Ruth

  1623. what

  1624. Ruth

  1625. does

  1626. and now

  1627. we've

  1628. seen

  1629. through

  1630. Naomi

  1631. what

  1632. Naomi

  1633. does

  1634. and what

  1635. we

  1636. glean

  1637. from

  1638. who

  1639. both

  1640. of

  1641. them

  1642. have

  1643. walked

  1644. through

  1645. this

  1646. season

  1647. both

  1648. of

  1649. them

  1650. have

  1651. walked

  1652. through

  1653. these

  1654. battles

  1655. both

  1656. of

  1657. them

  1658. have

  1659. walked

  1660. through

  1661. these

  1662. struggles

  1663. but what

  1664. we find

  1665. in Ruth

  1666. is

  1667. freedom

  1668. and what

  1669. we find

  1670. in Naomi

  1671. is

  1672. misery

  1673. so I

  1674. want you

  1675. to think

  1676. through

  1677. as you

  1678. walk

  1679. through

  1680. these

  1681. things

  1682. of life

  1683. what

  1684. are we

  1685. identifying

  1686. with

  1687. what are we

  1688. drawing

  1689. toward

  1690. the freedom

  1691. of Ruth

  1692. or the

  1693. misery

  1694. of

  1695. Naomi

  1696. they both

  1697. in essence

  1698. have the

  1699. same life

  1700. ahead

  1701. they've

  1702. both been

  1703. dealt

  1704. the same

  1705. hand of

  1706. cards

  1707. what they

  1708. know

  1709. awaits

  1710. both of

  1711. them

  1712. without

  1713. husbands

  1714. without

  1715. sons

  1716. which means

  1717. life

  1718. without

  1719. care

  1720. and security

  1721. and hope

  1722. but

  1723. Ruth

  1724. chooses

  1725. freedom

  1726. and

  1727. chooses

  1728. faithfulness

  1729. and she

  1730. grows

  1731. but

  1732. Naomi

  1733. chooses

  1734. bitterness

  1735. and

  1736. victimhood

  1737. and it's

  1738. what defines

  1739. her

  1740. and what

  1741. marks

  1742. her

  1743. you know

  1744. God

  1745. gives you

  1746. and I

  1747. a lot

  1748. of freedom

  1749. to make

  1750. choices

  1751. but so

  1752. much of

  1753. what happens

  1754. in our

  1755. life

  1756. is out

  1757. of our

  1758. control

  1759. amen

  1760. I can't

  1761. control

  1762. my wife

  1763. my kids

  1764. you

  1765. right

  1766. my neighbors

  1767. my co-workers

  1768. right

  1769. we can't

  1770. control

  1771. we think

  1772. we can

  1773. we have

  1774. this false

  1775. facade

  1776. of hope

  1777. but we

  1778. can't even

  1779. control

  1780. things within

  1781. our lives

  1782. right

  1783. we can't

  1784. even control

  1785. things that

  1786. are happening

  1787. within us

  1788. right

  1789. who here

  1790. can control

  1791. the weather

  1792. the family

  1793. they were

  1794. born into

  1795. the natural

  1796. gifts that

  1797. they were

  1798. given

  1799. it was funny

  1800. Joanne said

  1801. to me this

  1802. morning

  1803. sorry Joanne

  1804. she said

  1805. how about

  1806. I preach

  1807. and you

  1808. sing

  1809. right

  1810. and I

  1811. appreciate

  1812. that

  1813. right

  1814. and here's

  1815. what I

  1816. believe

  1817. like

  1818. I can

  1819. sign up

  1820. for lessons

  1821. to sing

  1822. and it

  1823. might

  1824. improve

  1825. but it

  1826. ain't

  1827. gonna be

  1828. good

  1829. you know

  1830. it

  1831. ain't

  1832. gonna be

  1833. good

  1834. at any

  1835. point

  1836. in time

  1837. right

  1838. I

  1839. can't

  1840. control

  1841. that

  1842. this is

  1843. the voice

  1844. I was

  1845. given

  1846. right

  1847. we can't

  1848. control

  1849. but what

  1850. God

  1851. understand

  1852. what we

  1853. understand

  1854. about the

  1855. Lord

  1856. is that

  1857. he's in

  1858. control

  1859. and here's

  1860. what we

  1861. begin to

  1862. see and

  1863. understand

  1864. we

  1865. control

  1866. how we

  1867. respond

  1868. to it

  1869. we

  1870. control

  1871. what we

  1872. go through

  1873. you see

  1874. Naomi forgot

  1875. about the

  1876. years of

  1877. faithfulness

  1878. of God

  1879. because of

  1880. the last

  1881. 10 years

  1882. of struggle

  1883. now I

  1884. feel like

  1885. so many

  1886. times in

  1887. my life

  1888. I'll give

  1889. her credit

  1890. for the

  1891. 10 years

  1892. I feel

  1893. like sometimes

  1894. I forget

  1895. about the

  1896. years of

  1897. faithfulness

  1898. of God

  1899. because of

  1900. the last

  1901. 10 minutes

  1902. right

  1903. the last

  1904. 10 seconds

  1905. in that

  1906. last

  1907. moment

  1908. but where

  1909. God

  1910. is

  1911. and so

  1912. my prayer

  1913. as we

  1914. wrap this

  1915. up here

  1916. my prayer

  1917. for us

  1918. this morning

  1919. is we're

  1920. going to

  1921. go through

  1922. and we're

  1923. going to

  1924. look at

  1925. these

  1926. chapters

  1927. in this

  1928. study

  1929. my prayer

  1930. for you

  1931. this morning

  1932. is this

  1933. that no

  1934. matter where

  1935. you find

  1936. yourself

  1937. right now

  1938. no matter

  1939. where you

  1940. feel like

  1941. this life

  1942. has been

  1943. led

  1944. and where

  1945. you are

  1946. in it

  1947. no matter

  1948. the choices

  1949. you feel

  1950. like you've

  1951. made to

  1952. get you

  1953. where you

  1954. are

  1955. or the

  1956. choices

  1957. that you

  1958. didn't

  1959. make to

  1960. get you

  1961. where you

  1962. are

  1963. that we

  1964. can trust

  1965. in the

  1966. faithfulness

  1967. and the

  1968. providence

  1969. of God

  1970. that we

  1971. know that

  1972. in all

  1973. of it

  1974. that God's

  1975. working

  1976. and what

  1977. God's

  1978. doing

  1979. and when

  1980. we find

  1981. ourselves

  1982. in a

  1983. moment

  1984. in a

  1985. day

  1986. in a

  1987. season

  1988. in a

  1989. decade

  1990. of

  1991. misery

  1992. right

  1993. we'll

  1994. look to

  1995. flee

  1996. from the

  1997. bitterness

  1998. and cling

  1999. to the

  2000. Lord

  2001. and deepen

  2002. our faith

  2003. through it

  2004. would you

  2005. pray with

  2006. me

  2007. Lord we

  2008. thank you

  2009. so much

  2010. for this

  2011. morning

  2012. God in

  2013. these words

  2014. of your

  2015. faithfulness

  2016. of who

  2017. you are

  2018. Lord as

  2019. we look

  2020. at this

  2021. story

  2022. there's

  2023. so much

  2024. of what's

  2025. there

  2026. that points

  2027. us to

  2028. who you

  2029. are

  2030. but today

  2031. Lord we

  2032. ask ourselves

  2033. the question

  2034. where is our

  2035. faith in

  2036. and where is

  2037. our hope

  2038. found

  2039. is it in

  2040. you

  2041. or in the

  2042. circumstances

  2043. of our

  2044. life

  2045. we place

  2046. our trust

  2047. in ourselves

  2048. or our

  2049. trust in

  2050. the one

  2051. who promises

  2052. to save

  2053. us

  2054. and to

  2055. deliver us

  2056. the one

  2057. who promises

  2058. to use

  2059. all things

  2060. to grow

  2061. us

  2062. and strengthen

  2063. us

  2064. Lord may

  2065. we cling

  2066. to you

  2067. and it's in

  2068. Jesus name

  2069. we pray

  2070. amen
