  1. Welcome to the Willow Ridge Sermons Podcast.

  2. This is where you can find audio from Sunday morning messages and more.

  3. Make sure you're subscribed so that you don't miss future episodes, and thanks for listening.

  4. This week has been hard and good.

  5. I think I've cried more this week than I have in a long time.

  6. But God has been good, and God has been faithful.

  7. I want to thank you, church, through your generosity, through your willingness, through the opportunities that God has opened us.

  8. We've been able to minister to families, not just in Lexington, but in Gilbert, in Minetta, in Augusta, in Greenville, in Batesburg,

  9. and in other towns and other cities that I'm not even aware of as you've gone.

  10. This last week, last Sunday, Aaron and I went to Augusta, my hometown, to see my family.

  11. Some of them lost their whole home.

  12. And on the way back, I said, we've got to do something.

  13. So this week was your pastor's very unorganized attempt to do something.

  14. And we want to move together as we go forward.

  15. So in the busyness of this week, we have together a somewhat organized plan so that we can continue to reach and to serve and to share the gospel with others.

  16. So I want to share that with you.

  17. Each Thursday, moving forward, as long as God continues to provide us opportunities, we're going to take Thursdays as an opportunity to mobilize our church.

  18. Each Sunday, I will announce what we will be doing that week.

  19. This week, we have an elderly couple who lives in Lawrence County.

  20. And so we'll be making the roughly one hour, hour and 15 minute drive up to the Lawrence area to serve and to minister to that family with some chainsaw work.

  21. If you would like to be a part of that, you are welcome to join us.

  22. If you have a chainsaw, great.

  23. If you don't have a chainsaw, that's okay.

  24. We still need you when we need you to work with us.

  25. We'll be back in the back after the service.

  26. Please come back and let me know.

  27. I'm going to go old school and write your name down on a piece of paper and give you a call in the morning.

  28. We also have another opportunity this week here locally if we have enough people to divide and do two teams this Thursday.

  29. We will also each Monday email out, so if you're not able to be here, we will email out with more details the specific situation.

  30. And if you've already let me know through writing your name down, coming to the back, or sending me a text message, that's fine.

  31. But if you haven't, you can respond to me and to the email to go and do that.

  32. And the email will have, this is when we meet, and even more specifically, these are the tools that we're going to need as we go through this.

  33. If you are aware of, I want to be careful that we don't overpromise on things, but I want to make sure that we're serving you guys the best that we can,

  34. and we're serving the people that you're loving the best that we can.

  35. If you know of, or as you are made aware of needs, please let us know.

  36. Please let us know.

  37. I know that that takes, for some of us, it's a struggle to do that, but what we've seen and what we've watched as God's worked and moved this week has been phenomenal.

  38. Had the opportunity to pray with a Muslim man this past week.

  39. So God's up to something.

  40. I know for some of you, Thursdays are difficult, and I understand.

  41. But strategically for us right now, that's what we've chosen.

  42. There will be some opportunities for Saturdays.

  43. Jamie Rogers, who many of you, if you've been around Willow Ridge Church for a while, you recognize Jamie's name.

  44. Jamie is originally from South Carolina, but Jamie went and planted a church in New York, and that church is still going, is still thriving.

  45. But Jamie is back here in South Carolina, and Jamie is serving as the associational director of the Columbia Metro Baptist Association.

  46. That is not the association that we are a part of.

  47. We are part of the Lexington Baptist Association, but they're a part of our Southern Baptist Convention of Associations.

  48. This past week, I threw out just on Facebook because Jamie was mobilizing some teams out of Columbia Metro.

  49. This Saturday, they will not have the opportunity to mobilize, but Jamie is hoping to put together at least several times a month on Saturdays to mobilize brothers and sisters in Christ from various churches around the Columbia area to go and to work in some of the hardest, most impacted areas,

  50. not just in our cities, not just in our city, but other places in our state, and maybe even outside of our state.

  51. What I promise to do for you is Jamie's going to let us know that, and as we find those opportunities, we will make you aware of that.

  52. We had one of our church members this past Sunday that was able to hear about that, jump in that, had a wonderful time going to be able to serve and meet some fellow brothers and sisters in Christ from other churches.

  53. We're going to make that aware for the Columbia Metro Baptist Association, so we'll do our best through social media and through email to make sure that we get those out to you as soon as we can.

  54. If you're more involved, Tim Rice is here.

  55. Tim, I'm going to put you on the spot, man, and maybe kind of ask you if you could be around at the back at the very end.

  56. If you want to be more involved, our South Carolina Baptist Convention Disaster Relief is doing projects, and Tim works alongside in the Baptist Convention, and so we can answer some questions and see what we can do for that as well.

  57. But I think here's where my heart lands the most on this, okay?

  58. And this is my challenge to you.

  59. This is my challenge to me.

  60. This is my challenge to my wife.

  61. This is my challenge to my son and my daughter, and I want to share it with you.

  62. There are so many people right now that have needs.

  63. If you see a need and you can meet that need, meet that need.

  64. Meet that need.

  65. It may be you running a chainsaw on someone's property.

  66. It may be you making a meal.

  67. It may be you praying for someone.

  68. It may be you going and picking up some gas and delivering it to somebody for their generator.

  69. If you see a need, meet a need.

  70. If you don't know where to go, trust God.

  71. Get in your car.

  72. Drive to Batesburg.

  73. Drive to Mineta.

  74. Drive to Augusta.

  75. Drive to Greenville.

  76. Drive to Asheville.

  77. Heard instances all week of individuals in our congregation that did just that.

  78. And they never ran out of places that they could go help.

  79. Last Monday, I went and knocked on the door of a lady that I did not know, who did not know me.

  80. And she came to the door, and she looked at me like I was crazy.

  81. And I said, I don't know you.

  82. You've never met me.

  83. But I hear you've got some work that you need to be done.

  84. And she said, absolutely.

  85. And we're able to serve her and pray with her and care for her.

  86. This isn't a normal Sunday, so we'll do things that we don't typically do a lot.

  87. One of the families that we were able to help this past week is the Dennis family.

  88. To know the Dennis family is to love the Dennis family.

  89. It's also, I just want to say this, it's to laugh a lot with the Dennis family.

  90. They were one of the families that God had provided us the opportunity to go help.

  91. In the booming metropolis known as Mineta, South Carolina.

  92. I told them I've driven by their house probably 300 times in my life,

  93. never knowing that that was their house from long before when we lived in Aiken.

  94. They handed me this letter, and I want to read this to you.

  95. I'm giving honor to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

  96. Pastor Bo and Pastor Dave, and the Willow Ridge Church family.

  97. We want to express sincere gratitude and thanks

  98. for how you and Willow Ridge responded,

  99. assisting us during the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.

  100. Without delay, you came and cut down trees that had fallen,

  101. removed tree limbs and debris from the property.

  102. Willow Ridge members of all ages stepped up

  103. and did what we have not been able to do.

  104. A generator with fuel, cooking equipment,

  105. was loaned to us,

  106. and we were given contributions as well.

  107. For all of your hard work, we are truly grateful.

  108. Each day, Pastor Bo ended with a prayer

  109. where he used the word family.

  110. We are thankful because we did not know that we meant that much to Willow Ridge Church.

  111. We love Willow Ridge and could not be part of a better church.

  112. Again, much love, appreciation, and gratitude to Willow Ridge

  113. and to the angels that rescued us when we needed it most.

  114. Our power has been restored.

  115. Love the Dennis family of Mineta.

  116. I love that.

  117. That's it.

  118. Genesis chapter 33, verse 8 says,

    Genesis 33:8

  119. Would you pray with me?

  120. God, I thank you so much

  121. for how you work and how you move.

  122. God, today, as we teach your word,

  123. may it be empowered with your spirit.

  124. May men and women and children be drawn to repentance.

  125. And may you be glorified.

  126. It's in Jesus' name we pray.

  127. Amen.

  128. As we continue on in our study in Genesis,

  129. we want to look at and establish some things.

  130. Number one, that God is a God of relationships.

  131. We've looked a lot at the dynamic of relationships,

  132. both functional and dysfunctional relationships,

  133. both toxic and healthy relationships.

  134. But this comes out of the basis of the understanding

  135. that God is a God of relationships.

  136. We see this God is with you.

  137. God is with his church.

  138. We see relationships of God calling us to one another,

  139. and we see and we understand

  140. that God has called us into relationship with everyone else.

  141. So as he calls us into relationship with him,

  142. he forms us into relationship with one another,

  143. and he sends us into relationship with them.

  144. So there's not a person or being

  145. that God is not engaging us with.

  146. There are those that we are saved

  147. and brought into right relationship with him

  148. so that we can have proper fellowship

  149. amongst brothers and sisters of Christ in faith

  150. so that we can go and share the gospel

  151. with those who do not know him.

  152. God is a God of relationships.

  153. And if Satan is the exact opposite of God,

  154. Satan hates relationships.

  155. Satan doesn't want a relationship with you.

  156. Satan's goal, Satan's desire,

  157. what he wants, what he craves

  158. is in the destruction of your life

  159. to destroy the relationships you have.

  160. So Satan hates your relationships.

  161. He hates your relationship with God.

  162. He hates your relationship with your spouse,

  163. with your kids, with your church,

  164. with your friends.

  165. He hates them.

  166. He wants to destroy them.

  167. Look at what he does in the garden with Adam and Eve.

  168. He attacks their relationship with God

  169. and in doing so seeks to attack

  170. their relationship with one another.

  171. But God's so desiring that relationship

  172. that he works to establish relationship

  173. and God works to reconcile relationship.

  174. God takes what is broken and fixes it.

  175. God takes what is dead and brings it to life.

  176. I told this story years ago.

  177. It's my favorite example of this.

  178. God does what we cannot do.

  179. We were living in Aiken.

  180. I had a weed eater.

  181. It broke.

  182. I decided that I was capable

  183. to take it apart and to fix it.

  184. I got my tool set.

  185. I laid out the weed eater.

  186. I had a guy tell me this past week

  187. that it's the most simple tool

  188. to take apart and put back together again.

  189. I said, ha, ha, ha, I beg to differ.

  190. I was out there for hours.

  191. Took it all apart.

  192. Parts scattered all over the garage.

  193. Come walking inside.

  194. Grease and dirt.

  195. Smelling like gas.

  196. Aaron said, well?

  197. I said, well, we're headed to Lowe's.

  198. Right?

  199. I couldn't fix it.

  200. God, God doesn't throw away.

  201. God takes what is broken and reconciles.

  202. God takes what is broken and fixes.

  203. God takes what is dead and makes it alive.

  204. When we see in the dynamic of these relationships

  205. and how they weave and interact through Scripture,

  206. we see that Satan would have loved the dysfunction that exists.

  207. We read about a family where we're lying.

  208. We read about a family with deceit.

  209. We read about a family where we're stealing.

  210. We read about a family where manipulation is the norm

  211. and it creates a playground for Satan.

  212. But what we're going to find as we journey into chapter 33,

  213. what I've had to take some hard looks at myself and my life is this truth.

  214. Sometimes the greatest miracle that God does in your life and mine

  215. is he brings us to a place where we say to him and we say to others,

  216. I'm sorry.

  217. I'm sorry.

  218. And as we get into Genesis chapter 33,

    Genesis 33 chapter mention

  219. this is where we find Jacob.

  220. A man once in rebellion,

  221. now seeking to follow the Lord

  222. and has brought him to a point and place in his life

  223. in the relationship with his brother Esau

  224. where he's been prepared,

  225. the heart work has been done

  226. for him to come and say,

  227. I'm sorry.

  228. So let's look at the first three verses,

  229. Genesis 33 verses 1 through 3.

    Genesis 33:1–3

  230. And Jacob lifted up his eyes and looked

  231. and behold,

  232. Esau was coming

  233. and 400 men with him.

  234. So he divided the children among Leah and Rachel

  235. and the two female servants.

  236. And he put the servants with their children in front

  237. and then Leah with her children

  238. and Rachel and Joseph last of all.

  239. He himself went on before them,

  240. bowing himself to the ground seven times

  241. until he came near to his brother.

  242. In the restoring and in the moving of this relationship,

  243. what I want us to see and to grasp in our obedience to the Lord is this,

  244. is moving from fear to trust.

  245. Is moving from fear to trust.

  246. Now Jacob was afraid and he should have been.

  247. He was afraid and he should have been.

  248. His brother Esau, tough guy.

  249. He's the hunter.

  250. He's the bigger.

  251. He's the muscular.

  252. He's all of the things.

  253. And he sees the tough guy.

  254. Esau coming.

  255. And it's not just him by himself.

  256. It's him with 400 men.

  257. I don't know if you've ever been in a situation where you realized,

  258. I'm outmatched.

  259. But if the odds are ever 401 to 1, guess what?

  260. Right?

  261. But Jacob in this moment chose not who he was before God,

  262. but he chose who he is in God.

  263. Before, he would have lied, he would have manipulated, he would have run.

  264. Why do we know that's what he would have done?

  265. Because that's what he did.

  266. He would have lied.

  267. He was the deceiver.

  268. He would have manipulated the emotions.

  269. He would run.

  270. He would flee.

  271. This is who he was before.

  272. As he responded to the selfishness and the fear of his heart.

  273. But now, what does he do?

  274. Now God says, I'm with you.

  275. Now God says, go.

  276. And so Jacob in this, sees the reality of what is before him.

  277. 401 men waiting on him.

  278. And his choice is to obey, which means his choice is to trust.

  279. You see, those two are always connected.

  280. When we obey God, we trust God.

  281. When we trust God, we obey God.

  282. Tim Scholl, thank you for your testimony this morning.

  283. In that, what God, what Tim was sharing with us this morning,

  284. in what we see is this fine line of walking,

  285. of the steps back and forth,

  286. of the journey that we're on as we're growing,

  287. as we're obeying in our relationship with God.

  288. It's trust and obedience, trust and obedience,

  289. trust and obedience, trust and obedience,

  290. in sync with one another.

  291. And that's what we see here with Jacob.

  292. While fear manipulates us, trust in God motivates us.

  293. Fear will cripple us, but trust with God will move us.

  294. Apostle Paul in 2 Timothy chapter 1.

    2 Timothy 1 chapter mention

  295. It's one of my favorite books of the Bible.

  296. Paul writes to his son in the faith, Timothy.

  297. Hear what he writes.

  298. For this reason, starting in verse 6,

  299. for a reason I remind you to fan and to flame the gift of God,

  300. which is in you through the laying on of my hands.

  301. Verse 7.

  302. I want to say that this verse has been a verse

  303. that has been very popular in culture.

  304. And it's also a verse that oftentimes can be taken out of context.

  305. Paul is writing to Timothy, his son in the faith,

  306. some of Paul's last words.

  307. And he's reminding Timothy, all throughout it,

  308. this is who you are because this is who God is.

  309. Paul, who awaits his execution,

  310. Paul, who knows that this is what is happening within the church,

  311. says to Timothy,

  312. but here's what fear is going to create.

  313. Fear creates chaos.

  314. Fear creates lies.

  315. Fear creates destruction.

  316. But we are not of that,

  317. that God did not give us this spirit,

  318. but God gave us a different spirit.

  319. God gives us the power of God,

  320. the love of God,

  321. and the self-control that comes from God.

  322. And this is what we are seeing in the life of Jacob.

  323. It's not that Jacob wakes up one morning

  324. and says,

  325. it's time to be a man.

  326. It's time to figure this out.

  327. It's time to talk myself up.

  328. It's time to get the pep talk of what I need to do.

  329. But what he does is he responds,

  330. not in his own courage,

  331. but in the courage of God.

  332. You see,

  333. Jacob's ability is not in what Jacob can create in himself.

  334. Jacob's ability is not what Jacob can manipulate in himself.

  335. This is the old Jacob.

  336. The new Jacob's like,

  337. no, no, no.

  338. God's called.

  339. I'm going to go.

  340. God's called,

  341. and I'm going to walk.

  342. God's called,

  343. and I'm going to obey.

  344. And whatever the cost is,

  345. this is what I'm going to do.

  346. I want to ask you this right now.

  347. Right now,

  348. what are you facing in life that brings you fear?

  349. What are you facing in your life that within you,

  350. what it causes and what it creates is the fear that is there?

  351. And in your life,

  352. I want to ask you,

  353. are you pursuing a fix?

  354. Are you pursuing an answer?

  355. Or are you pursuing God?

  356. Are you pursuing God?

  357. I guarantee you,

  358. if Jacob would have pulled his buddies aside,

  359. it would have been like,

  360. hey man,

  361. I get it.

  362. I get it.

  363. It's really cool that you're spiritual now.

  364. I get it that it's really cool that you've got this faith.

  365. But bro,

  366. 401 to one?

  367. I don't think so.

  368. But ahead of all of that,

  369. ahead of all of that is his obedience.

  370. So with what your fear is,

  371. with where you are,

  372. with where you struggle,

  373. and here's what I want to tell you,

  374. that you have a God

  375. who's calling you to obedience.

  376. To obey him

  377. and to trust him.

  378. So verses 4 through 11.

  379. But Esau

  380. ran to meet him

  381. and embraced him

  382. and fell on his neck

  383. and kissed him

  384. and they wept.

  385. And when Esau

  386. lifted up his eyes

  387. and saw the women

  388. and children,

  389. he said,

  390. who are these with you?

  391. Just remind,

  392. he's been gone 20 years.

  393. Who are these with you?

  394. Jacob said,

  395. the children

  396. whom God

  397. has graciously given

  398. your servant.

  399. Then the servants

  400. drew near,

  401. they and their children

  402. and bowed down.

  403. Leah likewise

  404. and her children

  405. drew near

  406. and bowed down.

  407. And last,

  408. Joseph and Rachel

  409. drew near

  410. and they bowed down.

  411. Verse 8.

  412. Esau said,

  413. what do you mean

  414. by all this company

  415. that I met?

  416. And Jacob answered,

  417. to find favor

  418. in the sight of my Lord.

  419. But Esau said,

  420. I have enough,

  421. my brother.

  422. Keep what you had offered.

  423. Let's pause there.

  424. Remember,

  425. Jacob has sent

  426. an offering

  427. ahead of him.

  428. He has sent

  429. a sacrifice

  430. ahead of him.

  431. Esau's like,

  432. nah, brother.

  433. Keep that.

  434. Keep that.

  435. Jacob said,

  436. no, please.

  437. If I have found favor

  438. in your sight,

  439. then accept

  440. my present

  441. from my hand.

  442. For I have seen

  443. your face,

  444. which is like

  445. seeing the face of God,

  446. and you have accepted me.

  447. Please accept

  448. my blessing

  449. that it is brought

  450. to you

  451. because God

  452. has dealt

  453. graciously

  454. with me

  455. and because

  456. I have enough.

  457. Thus he urged him

  458. and he took it.

  459. Wherever we are

  460. in life,

  461. wherever we are

  462. in our journey,

  463. wherever we are,

  464. wherever we find

  465. ourselves this morning,

  466. what we need

  467. is grace.

  468. What we need

  469. is grace.

  470. I don't think

  471. this is what

  472. Jacob expected.

  473. I definitely know

  474. this is not

  475. what Jacob deserved,

  476. but this

  477. is what

  478. Jacob got.

  479. Look back

  480. at verse 8.

  481. He said,

  482. what do you mean

  483. by all this company

  484. that I met?

  485. Like,

  486. brother,

  487. what are you doing?

  488. And Jacob answered,

  489. to find favor

  490. in the sight

  491. of my Lord.

  492. The word favor

  493. in the Old Testament

  494. is grace.

  495. It's grace.

  496. is grace.

  497. Jacob says,

  498. listen,

  499. listen,

  500. what I need

  501. is not what I deserve.

  502. And Esau,

  503. you are the only one

  504. who can give it to me.

  505. The one that I've offended,

  506. the one that I've stolen from,

  507. the one that I've abused

  508. our relationship,

  509. the one that I've brought

  510. death and destruction to,

  511. the one that I've violated

  512. in this moment,

  513. you are the only person

  514. who can give me

  515. what I need,

  516. and that's grace.

  517. And here's the beautiful picture

  518. of what God's painting us.

  519. This is our position

  520. when we come to God.

  521. This is our position

  522. when we come before Him.

  523. We are the ones

  524. who broke it.

  525. We are the ones

  526. who violated it.

  527. We are the ones

  528. who destroy.

  529. We are the ones

  530. who kill.

  531. We are the ones

  532. who live in a life

  533. of sin,

  534. and we come to God

  535. not with what we can bring

  536. to the table

  537. to make the relationship right,

  538. but we come to the God

  539. in the desperate need

  540. of grace.

  541. Ephesians 4, 7 says,

  542. but grace was given

  543. to each one of us

  544. according to how good

  545. we've been that week.

  546. All right,

  547. that's not on the screen,

  548. all right?

  549. Nothing's on the screen.

  550. But grace was given

  551. to each one of us

  552. according to the measure

  553. of Christ's gift.

  554. Grace given.

  555. Not because of how good.

  556. Not because of how many works

  557. you did this week.

  558. Not because of how many rules

  559. you've obeyed.

  560. Not because of what you've done,

  561. what you've contributed,

  562. what you've brought to the table,

  563. how talented you are,

  564. how pretty you are,

  565. how wealthy you are,

  566. how well-spoken you are.

  567. But because of the measure

  568. of Christ's gift.

  569. And so what God gives us,

  570. what grace is,

  571. is God's favor

  572. or God's benevolence

  573. to the undeserving.

  574. You're like,

  575. Bo, that seems harsh

  576. to really separate out

  577. and say people,

  578. or some people are deserving,

  579. and some people are undeserving.

  580. Well, if you think

  581. there's two groups of people,

  582. those are the deserving

  583. and those are undeserving,

  584. then you don't understand people.

  585. So let me share something with you.

  586. We're all undeserving.

  587. You,

  588. me,

  589. everyone,

  590. we're undeserving,

  591. but God gives us his grace.

  592. God gives us his favor.

  593. God gives us his blessing

  594. found in Christ

  595. and Christ alone.

  596. So the beauty of grace,

  597. the reason why we sing

  598. so much about grace,

  599. the reason we talk about

  600. the goodness

  601. and the grace of God

  602. is because grace

  603. is this wonderful gift

  604. that you and I

  605. do not deserve.

  606. But God gives it to us.

  607. You see,

  608. grace isn't a loan

  609. that you and I

  610. can pay back.

  611. Grace isn't a gift.

  612. So guess what?

  613. You and I

  614. can't go and buy it.

  615. Grace,

  616. when we receive it,

  617. it is ours to keep.

  618. Grace comes from the heart

  619. of the generosity

  620. of God.

  621. that God gives something up

  622. so that we can have grace.

  623. Because grace,

  624. while free,

  625. meaning you didn't pay for it

  626. and neither did I,

  627. is costly.

  628. Because it demanded

  629. the life of Jesus.

  630. It demanded his death

  631. on the cross.

  632. And grace is undeserved.

  633. Not a one of us

  634. deserved him

  635. to get on the cross.

  636. And the beauty of this

  637. is this is what Jacob asked for.

  638. And this is what Esau gives.

  639. And this is what you need.

  640. And this is what God gives.

  641. It's what Owen needed.

  642. And God gave it.

  643. It's what Caden needed.

  644. And God gave it.

  645. It's what Ellie needed.

  646. And God gave it.

  647. It's what Joe needed.

  648. And God gave it.

  649. Verses 12 through 20.

  650. Then Esau said,

  651. let us journey on our way

  652. and I will go ahead of you.

  653. But Jacob said to him,

  654. my Lord knows

  655. that the children are frail

  656. and that the nursing flocks

  657. and herds

  658. are a care to me.

  659. If they are driven hard

  660. for one day,

  661. all the flocks will die.

  662. Let my Lord pass on

  663. ahead of his servant

  664. and I will lead on slowly

  665. at the pace of the livestock

  666. that are ahead of me

  667. and at the pace of the children

  668. until I come to my Lord and sire.

  669. So Esau said,

  670. let me leave with you

  671. some of the people

  672. who are with me.

  673. But he said,

  674. well, what need is there?

  675. Let me find favor

  676. in the sight of my Lord.

  677. So Esau returned that day

  678. on his way to Sire.

  679. But Jacob sojourned to Succoth

  680. and built himself a house

  681. and made booths

  682. for his livestock.

  683. Therefore, the name of the place

  684. is called Succoth.

  685. And Jacob came safely

  686. to the city of Shechem,

  687. which is in the land of Canaan,

  688. on his way from Padnam Aram,

  689. and he camped before the city.

  690. And from the sons of Hamor,

  691. Shechem's father,

  692. he bought for a hundred pieces

  693. of money

  694. the piece of land

  695. on which he had pitched his tent.

  696. And there he erected an altar

  697. and called it

  698. El Elohe Israel.

  699. So we go through

  700. the journey of life.

  701. As we go through

  702. the ups and downs,

  703. as we go through

  704. all that is happening,

  705. our challenge,

  706. our call,

  707. is to remember

  708. God's faithfulness.

  709. Here we see

  710. relationship is restored.

  711. Esau says,

  712. Jacob,

  713. come with me.

  714. And Jacob says,

  715. it's great,

  716. brother,

  717. that we're here,

  718. but I need to hang back.

  719. And so Jacob stays back

  720. and he prepares

  721. to enter into the land

  722. that God promised.

  723. And on his way,

  724. he stops

  725. and he builds an altar.

  726. Here at this altar,

  727. this is common,

  728. we've seen this

  729. throughout the Old Testament,

  730. throughout Genesis so far,

  731. he worships,

  732. he dedicates himself,

  733. he dedicates his family,

  734. he dedicates his people

  735. to God,

  736. and he gives the altar

  737. a name.

  738. And the name that he gives

  739. is God,

  740. is the God of Israel.

  741. He is reminding

  742. who this is

  743. and what God

  744. has done.

  745. And Jacob says,

  746. our relationship

  747. with God

  748. is what

  749. will define us.

  750. If you can,

  751. turn with me

  752. in your Bibles

  753. to Joshua chapter 24.

    Joshua 24 chapter mention

  754. Joshua 24.

  755. What we find

  756. is a very similar

  757. situation.

  758. Different,

  759. there's some similarities.

  760. As Joshua,

  761. who has been leading

  762. God's people,

  763. has come to the end

  764. of his life,

  765. and he challenges

  766. the people of God

  767. to be God's people

  768. and to follow God.

  769. And start reading

  770. in verse 14.

  771. Some of you may recognize

  772. some of these verses.

  773. Now therefore,

  774. fear the Lord

  775. and serve him

  776. in sincerity

  777. and in faithfulness.

  778. Put away the gods

  779. that your fathers

  780. served beyond the river

  781. and in Egypt

  782. and serve the Lord.

  783. So if you're not

  784. familiar with the story

  785. of the Israelites,

  786. the story of the Israelites

  787. is so much

  788. the story of humanity

  789. as they serve idols

  790. in spite of

  791. who God is.

  792. And so Joshua says,

  793. put away the gods

  794. that your fathers served

  795. beyond the river

  796. and in Egypt

  797. and serve the Lord.

  798. And if it is evil

  799. in your eyes

  800. to serve the Lord,

  801. choose this day

  802. whom you will serve.

  803. Whether the gods

  804. your father served

  805. in the region

  806. beyond the river

  807. or the gods

  808. of the Amorites

  809. in whose land

  810. you dwell.

  811. And then here's the verse.

  812. Here's the one

  813. that we know.

  814. But as for me

  815. and my house,

  816. we will serve

  817. the Lord.

  818. It's this stamp.

  819. It's this commitment.

  820. It's this decision

  821. that when things

  822. become difficult,

  823. that on the mountaintop

  824. and in the valley

  825. and on the road

  826. in between,

  827. that we'll look back

  828. and we're going to make

  829. a choice.

  830. and the choice

  831. is an easy choice

  832. because of who he is

  833. but it may be difficult

  834. in our circumstances

  835. that we're not going

  836. to revert back

  837. to who we were before

  838. but as for me

  839. and my house,

  840. we will serve

  841. the Lord.

  842. And then verse 16,

  843. then the people

  844. answered,

  845. far be it

  846. from us

  847. that we should

  848. forsake the Lord

  849. to serve other gods

  850. for it is the Lord

  851. our God

  852. who brought us

  853. and our fathers

  854. up from the land

  855. of Egypt

  856. out of the house

  857. of slavery

  858. and who did

  859. those great signs

  860. in our sight

  861. and preserved us

  862. in all the way

  863. that we went

  864. and among all

  865. the peoples

  866. through whom

  867. we passed

  868. and the Lord

  869. drove out

  870. before us

  871. all the peoples

  872. of the Amorites

  873. who lived

  874. in the land.

  875. Therefore,

  876. therefore,

  877. we also

  878. will serve

  879. the Lord

  880. for He

  881. is

  882. our

  883. God.

  884. Joshua

  885. calls the people

  886. to make a choice.

  887. Joshua

  888. calls

  889. the people

  890. to plant

  891. their foundation,

  892. to establish

  893. their life

  894. and above

  895. all

  896. things

  897. to serve

  898. the Lord.

  899. And the people

  900. respond

  901. positively

  902. because they

  903. say this,

  904. we remember,

  905. we remember,

  906. we remember.

  907. Some of those

  908. beautiful passages

  909. of Scripture

  910. that we find

  911. in the first

  912. several books

  913. of the Bible

  914. is God's people

  915. as they're

  916. brought out

  917. of slavery

  918. as they

  919. wander in the

  920. wilderness,

  921. as they

  922. journey into

  923. the land

  924. that God

  925. has for them.

  926. They look

  927. back.

  928. So many times

  929. you and I

  930. get caught

  931. in this pattern

  932. of looking forward,

  933. looking forward,

  934. looking forward,

  935. God's what's next,

  936. God what's next,

  937. God what's next,

  938. God what's next,

  939. but we don't

  940. stop

  941. and look

  942. back

  943. and remember.

  944. Remember where

  945. we came from.

  946. Remember the cost

  947. that was

  948. paid.

  949. We don't

  950. look back

  951. and remember

  952. our Egypt,

  953. our slavery,

  954. our death,

  955. so that we

  956. can appreciate

  957. and understand

  958. the life

  959. that we now

  960. have

  961. in Christ.

  962. In a moment,

  963. the band's

  964. going to come

  965. up on stage

  966. and we're

  967. going to

  968. take the

  969. Lord's

  970. Supper

  971. together.

  972. This act

  973. that we

  974. will do,

  975. this moment

  976. that we

  977. will have

  978. is not

  979. one that

  980. grants

  981. salvation,

  982. but it

  983. is one

  984. that is

  985. done

  986. by those

  987. who have

  988. been saved

  989. by Christ.

  990. This act

  991. that we

  992. will do

  993. is not

  994. done

  995. because we

  996. have been

  997. faithful

  998. in all

  999. that we've

  1000. done,

  1001. but it's

  1002. an act

  1003. that we

  1004. will do

  1005. because

  1006. he is

  1007. faithful

  1008. and he's

  1009. always been

  1010. faithful.

  1011. You see,

  1012. the story

  1013. of Jacob

  1014. is not

  1015. to come

  1016. to the

  1017. end of

  1018. it

  1019. and look

  1020. back

  1021. and say,

  1022. Jacob,

  1023. good for

  1024. you,

  1025. buddy.

  1026. Look at

  1027. what you've

  1028. done.

  1029. Look at

  1030. what you

  1031. figured out.

  1032. But it's

  1033. a story

  1034. of God's

  1035. faithfulness.

  1036. So in a

  1037. moment,

  1038. we'll have

  1039. some time

  1040. of response

  1041. where we'll

  1042. examine

  1043. through the

  1044. power of

  1045. Holy Spirit

  1046. our lives

  1047. and our

  1048. readiness

  1049. to partake

  1050. in the

  1051. Lord's

  1052. Supper.

  1053. You'll

  1054. remove in

  1055. a moment

  1056. a piece

  1057. of bread

  1058. from the

  1059. top of

  1060. the cup

  1061. that's

  1062. there.

  1063. And we'll

  1064. remember.

  1065. We'll

  1066. remember

  1067. the body

  1068. of Christ

  1069. who was

  1070. pierced

  1071. for our

  1072. transgressions.

  1073. We'll

  1074. remember

  1075. the body

  1076. of Christ

  1077. who endured

  1078. a punishment

  1079. that we

  1080. deserved.

  1081. We'll

  1082. remember

  1083. the body

  1084. of Christ

  1085. who took

  1086. on a

  1087. death

  1088. that should

  1089. have been

  1090. ours.

  1091. If we

  1092. take the

  1093. bread,

  1094. we'll take

  1095. the cup.

  1096. The cup

  1097. that represents

  1098. the blood

  1099. of Christ

  1100. of what

  1101. God's

  1102. word

  1103. tells us

  1104. the new

  1105. covenant

  1106. is in.

  1107. And the

  1108. gory,

  1109. horrific

  1110. picture

  1111. that was

  1112. the crucifixion

  1113. of Christ.

  1114. The blood

  1115. that was

  1116. shed

  1117. is the

  1118. blood

  1119. where we

  1120. found life.

  1121. The blood

  1122. that took

  1123. all that

  1124. you and

  1125. I were

  1126. before.

  1127. And it

  1128. washed us.

  1129. And it

  1130. made us

  1131. clean.

  1132. And it

  1133. made us

  1134. white as

  1135. snow.

  1136. So now

  1137. that the

  1138. Bible tells

  1139. us that

  1140. when God

  1141. looks on

  1142. us,

  1143. washed

  1144. and made

  1145. new,

  1146. that what

  1147. he sees

  1148. is the

  1149. perfection

  1150. of the

  1151. Son.

  1152. And that

  1153. our hope

  1154. and our

  1155. purpose

  1156. and our

  1157. life

  1158. and our

  1159. meaning

  1160. is found

  1161. in him.

  1162. And because

  1163. of what he did

  1164. on the cross

  1165. and because

  1166. three days

  1167. later he

  1168. overcame

  1169. the grave

  1170. and walked

  1171. in life,

  1172. when your

  1173. hope and

  1174. your trust

  1175. has been

  1176. put in

  1177. him,

  1178. what we

  1179. have is

  1180. hope for

  1181. today and

  1182. hope for

  1183. tomorrow because

  1184. it's found

  1185. in him.

  1186. And folks,

  1187. that's

  1188. grace.

  1189. That we

  1190. have found

  1191. favor in

  1192. God's

  1193. sight.

  1194. Not because

  1195. of who we

  1196. are,

  1197. but because

  1198. he is.

  1199. If you're

  1200. here today

  1201. and you're

  1202. not a

  1203. follower of

  1204. Jesus,

  1205. I want to

  1206. say thank

  1207. you for

  1208. being here.

  1209. Man,

  1210. I'm so

  1211. excited that

  1212. you,

  1213. you could

  1214. have done

  1215. a lot of

  1216. things today

  1217. and you

  1218. chose to

  1219. be here.

  1220. And we're

  1221. so grateful

  1222. for that.

  1223. And you

  1224. might be

  1225. thinking,

  1226. but Bo,

  1227. like,

  1228. I don't

  1229. know enough.

  1230. You might

  1231. be thinking,

  1232. but Bo,

  1233. I've still

  1234. got this

  1235. stuff that's

  1236. going on in

  1237. my life.

  1238. But Bo,

  1239. you might

  1240. say, but

  1241. you don't

  1242. know the

  1243. things that I

  1244. struggle with.

  1245. I say, you

  1246. know what,

  1247. you're right.

  1248. I don't.

  1249. But God

  1250. does.

  1251. And in

  1252. knowing all

  1253. of those

  1254. things about

  1255. you,

  1256. he sent

  1257. Jesus to the

  1258. cross to die

  1259. for you.

  1260. Because that's

  1261. how much

  1262. he desires

  1263. relationship

  1264. with you.

  1265. And you

  1266. see, today

  1267. is not

  1268. about getting

  1269. it all

  1270. figured out.

  1271. But today

  1272. is about

  1273. coming to

  1274. Jesus

  1275. and saying,

  1276. you have it

  1277. all figured

  1278. out.

  1279. Would you

  1280. pray with

  1281. me?

  1282. God, we

  1283. come to

  1284. you this

  1285. morning.

  1286. We're

  1287. thanking you

  1288. and praising

  1289. you for who

  1290. you are.

  1291. God, I

  1292. pray that if

  1293. there's anyone

  1294. here,

  1295. Lord, and

  1296. they don't

  1297. know you,

  1298. they don't

  1299. know Jesus

  1300. Christ as

  1301. their Lord

  1302. and Savior,

  1303. God, that

  1304. today would

  1305. be the day

  1306. of their

  1307. salvation.

  1308. God, we

  1309. are so

  1310. unworthy.

  1311. God, you

  1312. give us

  1313. anyways.

  1314. God, you

  1315. forgive,

  1316. you love,

  1317. you bring

  1318. dead to

  1319. life.

  1320. And God, I

  1321. pray that we

  1322. would walk

  1323. in the

  1324. goodness of

  1325. who you

  1326. are.

  1327. God, if

  1328. there's

  1329. anyone here

  1330. who does

  1331. not know

  1332. you,

  1333. Lord, I

  1334. pray that

  1335. today would

  1336. be the

  1337. day of

  1338. their

  1339. salvation.

  1340. God, I

  1341. pray that

  1342. there's

  1343. anyone here

  1344. who does

  1345. know you,

  1346. God, and

  1347. what is in

  1348. their heart

  1349. and their

  1350. desires of

  1351. the bitterness

  1352. between

  1353. others,

  1354. God, I

  1355. pray that

  1356. they would

  1357. find it in

  1358. their hearts

  1359. to forgive

  1360. as they

  1361. have been

  1362. forgiven.

  1363. through the

  1364. power of

  1365. your spirit

  1366. would you

  1367. draw us

  1368. to you

  1369. both in

  1370. repentance

  1371. and confession

  1372. and it's in

  1373. Jesus' name

  1374. we pray.

  1375. Amen.

  1376. Thanks again for

  1377. listening and be

  1378. sure to check back

  1379. next week for

  1380. another episode.
