Genesis Week 39 • We Need Godly Men

Well, good morning.

And one of those is through missional discipleship, which is the opportunity to take someone that

is not a Christian, they're not a follower of Christ, and to invite them to an opportunity

where we're going to create an atmosphere where we do fun things and we share the gospel.

And so this Man Camp will be an opportunity for that.

And so I want to encourage you men to be willing to do that, to come and be a part and bring

someone with you who does not know Christ.

And that day they will be introduced to Him and hear all about Jesus.

Number two is our Harvest Hangout.

These cards are on the rows around you.

Again, another great way for us to engage with our community.

So I want to make sure everybody hears this because sometimes there's some confusion.

All right.

This is an event for you to come to, for you to participate in, for you and your family to

have a blast at.

It's also an event for our community where we can go to engage our community with all

the things that are happening and taking place.

And so we want to ask that you do both, that you participate in and that you invite to as

well.

So be able to grab this, give this to someone maybe that you work with, that you're a neighbor

of to invite them and their family to come and be a part.

There will be fun for those of all ages.

We will have a blast.

All right.

We do need some more volunteers.

And so if you're willing to volunteer to do a trunk that night, to run a game, to serve

in different capacities, please make us aware.

But we would love to have you be a part of that.

And then this past week, this Thursday was our first official Thursday of mobilizing men

and women to go out into our community to serve.

We ended up with two projects that day, one up in Clinton, South Carolina, in Lawrence County,

and then the other here in Lexington County and had, I believe, I think the number that

I heard was 24 people showed up to go out and serve that day.

And so it was just a wonderful blessing.

And we're continuing on with that this week.

So we've got, as of right now, we've got one project.

We'll be going back up to Lawrence County to hopefully finish up what we got started.

And so if you would like to be a part of that, there's two ways that you can make me know.

I'll make sure that we're clear on this.

If you let me know today, I'm going to take my sermon outline notes and hand you a pen and

you're going to write your name down and then we've got you on record to go.

But we will also send out an email this week.

And so you can reply to that.

As you guys know, not every tree that fell was a small pine tree.

There's some really, really, really big trees.

And when I heard that this place we were going had big trees, I thought, I've cut, I've seen,

I've worked on some big trees.

And then we show up and saw these trees.

And these trees were the great granddaddies of all of the trees that I had seen.

And so we need some additional help.

We need some heavy equipment.

And so if you've got something that can help us lift up some of these trees,

some of them that are wedged down in the ground, we would greatly appreciate that.

So over the last several weeks, we've been doing something a little new as we get started.

And we've been reading a verse together as a church that helps us zero in on what I hope God has,

what God has done in me as I studied this passage of Scripture and what I hope that God's going to begin to do.

Kind of like a theme verse for the week.

I want to be honest with you, Genesis 34 is a little complicated to find that.

Like we're going to see in just a minute there's a lot of ugly that's in this.

And so as studying and preparing, I knew this week would come.

And just kind of reading through and preparing, God took me to a different verse that we're going to look at this morning to lead us into Genesis 34.

And so I'm going to read 1 Corinthians 13, I'm sorry, 1 Corinthians 16, verses 13 through 14.

1 Corinthians 16:13–14

Be watchful.

Stand firm in the faith.

Act like men.

Be strong.

Let all that you do be done in love.

Would you pray with me?

God, we thank you for the truth of your word.

God, I pray that as we study your word that your spirit would speak to our hearts.

Bring us to a spot of repentance.

God, I pray for the elimination of me and more of you.

And it's in Jesus' name we pray.

Amen.

I entitled this message today,

We Need Godly Men.

I'm not saying that we don't need godly women.

We absolutely need godly women.

As we study this passage, as I study this passage in Genesis 34,

the overwhelming truth,

and we've seen this play out in the course of Scripture,

and in the history of the world,

is this blatant truth

that we need godly men.

We need godly men in our homes.

We need godly men in our churches.

We need godly men in our schools.

We need godly old men.

We need godly young men.

We need godly men.

And if you're here and you're like,

well, we're leaving out roughly 50% of the population,

I want to speak a little bit about gender.

If you're new here,

or if you're unaware or uninformed of my views on this,

but hopefully you've been around and you know,

I want to share four truths

of my theological understanding of where I lie

as we get into this very,

very complicated passage in Genesis 34.

Number one, I believe from the Bible

that what we see is that God made men

and God made women.

God made them equal.

God made them both in the image and likeness of God.

I am not better than my wife,

and my wife is not better than me.

I believe that God made men and women different,

both being made in the image of God.

Aaron and I are not the same.

And with that, I made a man,

and she has made a woman,

and that's who we are.

I believe that God made men and women equal,

both being made in the image of God,

while calling men to specific areas of leadership,

both in the home and in the church.

Again, this does not mean that women are less than men.

In fact, if we want to do a,

if we want to have a separate conversation later,

let me summarize probably a three-hour conversation

with a sentence.

I feel, I believe that men are called to lead

in a sacrificial manner,

and the problem is many of us do not.

Maybe we don't lead,

or the manner in which we do lead

is not sacrificial, but is selfish.

That's why the Bible says,

husbands, love your wife

as Christ loved the church

and gave himself up for her.

I believe,

and some of you may criticize me of this

and say that I'm taking the easy way out,

but I believe largely the problem

is not with the ladies in the room,

but with us men.

I believe this is the problem that we see

in the church

and families today.

I believe men,

we've created an environment,

many of us have,

where godly women

cannot simply be godly women,

but because of our disobedience,

must also take on the role

of godly man,

because the man is not godly.

This isn't always the case,

but it is common

and is broken.

So guys,

it's me and you today,

and ladies,

thank you.

Let me reread 1 Corinthians 16,

13 through 14.

Be watchful,

stand firm in the faith,

act like men,

be strong,

let all that you do

be done in love.

I was having a conversation earlier

with someone,

a female of our church,

and I was talking about

this topic

that we're going to talk about

today,

I asked for prayer.

And I made this statement,

that godly leadership

in the home

does not mean

that the wife

doesn't have a voice,

doesn't have an opinion,

doesn't have perspective,

and doesn't speak truth.

If you don't believe me,

ask my wife.

And I say that

not in criticism of her,

but an encouragement of her,

of who she is

as she watches

and observes me,

and trust me,

she does.

Oh, she's watching me.

She's observing me.

And as she sees me

desiring above all things

obedience to the Lord

and sacrifice for my family,

she follows

not as a mindless zombie,

but as a woman of God.

And when I step out of line,

Trisha,

you shouldn't laugh

that hard at me.

Ain't that right, Chris?

All right.

When I step out of line,

guess what?

She lets me know.

And in complete honesty,

not in the moment,

but sometimes over the next

five to seven days,

I thank God for it, right?

Paul,

at the end of one of the most

messiest situations

that we see in Scripture,

writes 1 Corinthians 16.

And I wish we had the time

to journey all the way

through all that's going on.

But we don't.

But he gives some commands

to the church.

Some of these commands

are pretty simple to understand.

He says,

be watchful.

It's a two-pronged command

that Paul gives.

When you read all

of 1 Corinthians,

you see Paul's given

instruction,

watch out for evil

and watch out

for the Lord's return.

Be watchful.

He says,

stand firm in the faith.

Have correct doctrine.

Have correct doctrine.

It's important.

Like, I emphasize this

over and over again,

both to myself

and to you.

What we believe matters.

And we must hold truth

to God's Word,

not just in the areas

that we like,

but in the areas

we struggle with as well.

Stand firm in the faith.

Have correct doctrine.

Do not waver.

We'll skip one.

He says,

be strong.

Be strong.

He said,

be bold in the faith.

It's a church

that would experience

persecution.

Stand firm.

When they push you,

stand firm.

When they attack you,

stand firm.

And he says,

let all that you do

be done in love.

Love

that we'll see

used in Genesis 34

incorrectly.

Paul's not talking

about a feeling.

He's talking about

a positioning.

Let all that you do

be done

in the position

as the recipient

of the love of Christ.

So speak with truth

and grace.

Be bold for your faith.

But then there's

that little

three-word phrase.

Paul says,

act like men.

That's what grabbed me

this week.

Some modern

translations

take out this.

Yours may.

I think the NIV

changes it up.

I think the New King James

changes it up as well.

And instead it says,

be courageous

or be brave.

While being brave

is great,

is good,

be courageous

is good,

it's inaccurate.

The word

in the Greek

means

act like men

or the command

be a man.

That's a phrase.

Be a man.

That could be a trigger

for some people.

I think Paul's

using this phrase

as he is addressing

the men

of the church.

Act like men.

Act like men.

Act like men.

So what does that mean?

Act like a man.

What does it mean

be a man?

If I were to sit down

with a group of men

in our congregation,

all men

who put their faith,

hope,

and trust in the Lord

and ask that question,

what does it mean

to be a man?

I would bet

that all of us

would have some

different perspectives

to our answer.

So I think it's

a great question

to ask

and have a conversation

so what does it mean

to be a man?

But I think

the greater question

that we're going

to look at today

more specifically

in Genesis 34

is to ask this,

what does it mean

to be a godly man?

What does it mean

to be a man

who in all areas,

in all ways,

desires God

for himself,

for his family,

and for others?

Two things

as we get into this

and then we're going

to dive right in

and get into the mess.

Two things.

Number one,

please let today

be the reminder

that the people

of the Bible

are not our standard

and that Jesus is.

Jesus

is our standard.

Number two.

Today we'll hear

about the sexual assault

and rape

of Jacob's daughter.

as I deal

with this topic.

I want to be sensitive

and truthful

with my words

as I communicate

God's truth.

But I do want

to say this.

As we read through this

and we're going

to get into it,

Dinah,

his daughter,

in no way,

shape,

or form

deserve

what happened

to her.

And whether

you're male

or female,

whether you're

a man

or a woman,

if you're

sitting in here

today

and you've

been a victim

of sexual

assault,

let me say

this,

in no way,

shape,

or form

did you

deserve

that.

And you

have a God

who knows

you

and who

loves you

and is

working in

all that

you face.

So we're

going to read,

talk,

read,

talk,

and I think

hit up six

points at the

very end.

So start

with me

in Genesis

34,

starting in

verse 1.

Now Dinah,

the daughter

of Leah,

whom she

had born

to Jacob,

went out

to see

the women

of the

land.

And when

Shechem,

the daughter

of Hamor,

the Hivite,

the prince

of the land,

saw her,

he seized

her

and lay

with her

and humiliated

her.

and his

soul

was drawn

to Dinah,

the daughter

of Jacob.

He loved

the young

woman

and spoke

tenderly

to her.

So

Shechem

spoke to

his father,

Hamor,

saying,

get me

this girl

for my

wife.

A couple

things,

a couple

reminders.

Jacob is

a man

with multiple

wives,

one is Leah

and his

only daughter

is Dinah.

Jacob has

been called

by God

to take

his family

into the

land of

Canaan,

which is

where he

is,

but specifically

he's been

told within

there to

go to

Bethel,

and they

are not

in Bethel.

Instead

of continuing

on his

long,

hard,

grueling

journey,

it is,

with all

of the

people and

all of the

livestock and

all of the

things that

they have,

he stops

short of

where God

has called

him.

Dinah goes

out either

alone or

with the

pagan women

of the

land.

Again,

not blaming

her,

but giving

context.

The ruler,

the king

of the

land,

is a

man named

Hamer,

and he

has a

son named

Shechem.

Shechem

sees Dinah,

is attracted

to her,

and what

the Bible

says is

he seized

her,

he lay

with her,

and humiliated

her.

There are a

lot of people

who argue

about what

these words

mean.

I'm not

sure seizing

her and

humiliating

her ever

constitutes an

agreement between

two people.

Shechem,

after he

assaults

Dinah,

and that's

what I

believe,

professes

his love

for her.

Young ladies

and single

ladies in

the room.

Ungodly

men will

do

ungodly

things

while at

the same

time professing

their love

for you.

Here's the

goal.

I asked

my daughter

to be in

here today.

She was

supposed to

serve.

Stephanie

worked that

out for

me and

I'm

grateful

for

that.

Here's

my goal

for my

daughter.

Ladies,

here's my

goal for

you.

Seek

godly men

who do

godly

things,

who profess

their love

for God

and then

profess their

love for

you.

And make

sure that

this is who

they are.

And they

desire the

Lord for

themselves and

for you.

That is not

who this

man is.

Shechem

tells his

dad that

he wants

Dinah.

And like

a car

on a

car lot

tells his

dad,

go get

her for

me.

Verse

five.

Now

Jacob

heard that

he had

defiled his

daughter

Dinah.

But his

sons were

with his

livestock in

the field.

So Jacob

held his

peace until

they came.

And then

Hamor,

the father

of Shechem,

went out

to Jacob

to speak

with him.

The sons

of Jacob

had come

in and

from the

field and

as soon

as they

heard of

it,

the men

were indignant

and very

angry.

because he

had done

an outrageous

thing in

Israel

by lying

with Jacob's

daughter.

For such

a thing

must not

be done.

Jacob

hears

and does

nothing

and waits.

Weak.

Hamor

went to

speak

with

Jacob.

Remember,

Jacob

is not

a no one

in this

land.

He's a

man of

money,

of wealth,

of power,

of influence.

He goes

to speak

with Jacob

about Dinah

for his

sons.

Jacob's

sons

return

enraged

about what

had happened

to their

sister.

Verse

eight,

but Hamor

spoke with

them saying,

the soul

of my

son,

Shechem

longs

for your

daughter.

Please

give her

to him

to be

his wife.

Make

marriages

with us.

Give

your daughters

to us

and take

our daughters

for yourself.

You

shall dwell

with us

and the

land shall

be open

to you.

Dwell

and trade

it and

get property

in it.

Shechem

also said

to her

father

and to

her

brothers,

let me

find favor

in your

eyes

and whatever

you say

to me

I will

give.

Ask me

for a

great,

a bride

price

and a

gift

as you

will

and I

will give

you

whatever

you say

to me

only

give me

the young

woman

to be

my wife.

Let me summarize this.

This assaulter

and his dad

sit down

and say, I know what happened,

but he really loves her.

That's gross.

And then they make an offer.

Give us your daughters

and we'll give you ours.

Verse 13.

The sons of Jacob answered

Shechem and his father

more deceitfully

because he had defiled

their sister Dinah.

All right, so just pause

really quickly.

The sons of the deceiver

are going to deceive.

It's a whole other message.

Verse 14.

They said to them,

we cannot do this thing

to give our sister

to one who is uncircumcised.

For that would be

a disgrace to us.

Only on this occasion

we will agree with you

that you will become

as we are

by every male among you

being circumcised.

Then we will give

our daughters to you

and we will take

your daughters to ourselves

and we will dwell with you

and become one people.

But if you will not listen to us

and be circumcised,

then we will take

our daughter

and we will be gone.

So Jacob's sons,

they agree

to deception

to seek revenge

for their sister.

They say,

we'll agree to your standards,

but first,

all of the men.

you must be circumcised.

Verse 18.

Their words pleased

Hamor and Hamor's son,

Shechem.

And the young man

did not delay

to do the thing

because he delighted

in Jacob's daughter.

He was the most honored

of all of his father's house.

So Hamor and his son,

Shechem,

came to the gate

of their city

and spoke to the men

of their city,

saying,

these men are at peace

with us.

Let them dwell

in the land

and trade in it,

for behold,

the land is large

and nest for them.

Let us take their daughters

as wives

and let us

give them

our daughters.

Only on this condition

will the men

agree to dwell

with us

to become one people.

When every male

among us

is circumcised

as they are circumcised.

Will not their livestock,

their property,

and all their beasts

be ours?

Only let us

agree with them

and they will dwell

with us.

And all who went

out of the city

of his,

the gate

of his city,

listened to Hamor

and his sons,

Shechem,

and every male

was circumcised,

all who went out

of the city

of his gate.

They tell the men,

this is what we're

going to do,

this is what you've

got to do.

They agree

and they follow

through.

Verse 25,

on the third day

when they were sore,

two of the sons

of Jacob,

Simeon and Levi,

Dinah's brothers,

took their swords

and came against

the city

while it felt

secure

and killed

all the males.

They killed Hamor

and his son Shechem

with the sword

and took Dinah

out of Shechem's house

and went away.

The sons of Jacob

came upon the slain

and plundered the city

because they had

defiled their sister.

They took their flocks

and their herds,

their donkeys,

and whatever was

in the city

and in the field.

All their wealth,

all their little ones

and their wives,

all that was

in the houses,

they captured

and they plundered.

Simeon and Levi

come

and they wipe them out

and then they took

everything,

even the women

and the kids.

Verse 31

and 32,

Then Jacob

said to Simeon

and Levi,

You have brought

trouble on me

by making me stink

to the inhabitants

of the land,

the Canaanites

and the Perizzites.

My numbers are few

and if they gather

themselves against me

and attack me,

I shall be destroyed,

both I

and my household.

But they said,

should we treat

our sister

like a prostitute?

And that's

Genesis 34.

All of this unfolds.

Jacob looks at his sons.

He says,

What have you done?

What will others

think of me?

What will others

do to me?

Simeon and Levi

say,

Well, look what

they did to our sister

with revenge

in their heart.

And it's a sad story.

And notice,

nowhere in chapter 34

as God mentioned.

Nowhere.

So we look at this

as a case study.

Men,

what does it mean

to be a godly man?

keeping Jesus

as our standard.

Jesus

as our example.

We can look at this,

stand on this side

of the story,

and go,

well, I'm not that.

And while

our actions

might not be that,

I'm going to tell you

something, men.

Sometimes

our heart

is that.

No, no, no, no, no, no, no.

Not me.

Not me.

I said the same thing.

Not me.

And the Holy Spirit

begins to work.

The Holy Spirit

begins to move.

Because here's what we see.

Let's understand

what it means

to be a godly man.

Godly men,

think six.

Yes, six.

Number one.

Godly men

have enduring

obedience

to God.

Enduring

obedience

to God.

Jacob

stopped.

God called him

on a journey.

God called him

on a plan.

God called him

to follow me.

You'll be blessed.

God called him

to go

where I tell you

to go.

God said

I'm with you.

God said

this is what

I'm going to do

in you.

Go here.

Go here.

Go here.

And he does

and he does

and he does

and he does

and he stopped.

I don't know

if the journey

got too hard

or if he got

too lazy.

But he stopped.

And here's

what I see

time and time

again

in my life

and in the life

of so many

of you men

is this.

I want to

obey the Lord.

I want to

obey the Lord.

I want to

obey the Lord

and then

all of a sudden

something

a new job

a new boat

a new travel team

a new vacation home

a new neighbor

a new something

causes me

off of the path

of obedience

and causes me

to look over here

and cause me

to go where I'm not

supposed to be

and settle

where I'm not

supposed to be

and all of a sudden

a few years later

I look like

I look like

this guy

because I've

taken my eyes

off God

and I look back

at when I was

obedient

but I haven't

endured in obedience

I haven't walked

through the journey

of obedience

and I've moved

my mind off

and I've settled

in the land

that God's not

called me to be

in.

Men we gotta have

not part time

not seasonal

but if we're gonna

be the godly men

that God

called us to be

it's gotta be

an enduring obedience

so men

love your wives

and lead your family

in an enduring way

single men

love the Lord

love the Lord

more

than whatever it is

that's trying to

pull you away

men it isn't enough

to live in the moments

God calls us

to live

in the enduring

obedience

godly men

have enduring

obedience

to the Lord

number two

godly men

protect others

godly men

protect others

this is what

I'm talking about

okay so please

hear me

I'm not

blaming

for what

happened

to her

I'm not

twist

what I'm

about to

say

but she

went off

from God's

people

into a pagan

land

and the

curiosity

of hers

of in that

moment

not her

fault

not her

fault

but my

question is

where's

Jacob

where's

Jacob

where's the

protection

where's the

understanding

where's the

perspective of

what's going to be

there

where's he at

having hard

conversations

saying what he

needs to say

doing what he

needs to do

modeling

what he needs

to model

getting his

wife

or remember

wives

remember that

enduring

obedience

together

where is he

no no no

no no

this is not

where you're

going to be

I'll go

with you

I'll be

with you

I'll have

this with

you

this is

what we're

going to

do

godly men

protect

others

men

are we

protectors

are we

protectors

of truth

of God's

word

are we

protectors

of our

homes

we're

protectors

of our

wives

we're

protectors

of our

kids

we're

the

protectors

of those

that God

entrusted

us with

godly men

others

the call

of scripture

of what we

see time

and time

again

is the

widow

and the

orphan

the widow

and the

orphan

the widow

and the

orphan

do you

know why

because they

couldn't

protect

themselves

godly men

protect

others

Jacob's

only reaction

was fear

and he

froze

men

weep

weep

with your

daughter

experience

godly

anger

fall on

your knees

seek the

lord

what's

you know

what's

interesting

about

Jacob

he did

none of

these

things

when his

daughter

was

assaulted

but when

he feared

for his

life

what did

he do

then

godly men

care

godly men

carry

empathy

godly men

don't just

care for

their

daughters

their

sons

even

their

spouse

but they

care for

others

too

men

don't be

so tough

that you

lose the

opportunity

to be

soft

in the

moment

don't be

so

ready

to punch

through a

wall

that you

miss the

opportunity

to embrace

someone that

needs to be

held

godly men

care

godly men

are leaders

godly men

are leaders

Jacob

he waited

for others

to lead

he waited

for his

sons

men

step up

seek

God

lead

your

family

define

godly

leadership

this way

godly men

lead in a

posture of

surrender to

the lord

and the

sacrifice

to those

who they

lead

godly

people

will follow

godly

men

when

godly

men

sacrificially

seek the

lord

what we're

going to

do

and I'm

going to be

honest with

you guys

I'm like

I can get

behind this

story

you know

but here's

the deal

here's the

hard part

in this

their goal

maybe started

out as

justice

but it

turned into

revenge

and do you

know what

revenge does

it feeds

the flesh

what do we

see at the

end

they'll take

they'll take

they'll take

men

in our

pursuit of

righteousness

desire justice

there's a lot

of evil

happening in

the world

there's a lot

of bad

things

taking place

and there's

a lot of

bad things

that have

happened to

a lot of

you

and when

they do

protect your

heart from

the pursuits

of revenge

and pray

that justice

would be

it's the

mark of a

believer

because here's

what we

know

God's

got it

and whether

it happens

on our

timeline or

not

let me tell

you this

it always

happens on

his

pursue

righteousness

number
