if you'd like to automatically receive new episodes each week.
-
Hey, good morning. Thank you. If you have your Bible, and I hope you do, I want to invite you to join
-
me in 2 Timothy chapter 3. If you do not have a Bible, I want to encourage you at the end of the
2 Timothy 3 chapter mention
-
service, back here to my left are some black Bibles. We would love for you to come and get one of those
-
as a gift from us to you. If we can give you anything else, it would be our privilege to give
-
you a copy of God's Word. Also, if you have a copy of God's Word, and maybe the translation is a little
-
bit difficult for you to read or understand, please come back and get one of those as well.
-
It is the translation that I use on Sunday mornings, so I want to invite you to do that.
-
I'd like to read before we get started, 2 Timothy 3, 16 through 17, and it'll be our focal verse. We'll
-
read it again later, but it says,
-
Would you pray with me? God, thank you so much for this time and this opportunity, Lord, that we could
-
gather in here today. God, I thank you for Dawn Coulter as she shared her story. God, your story with what
-
you're doing in her life at the 9 o'clock hour. God, thank you for the power of the testimony. God,
-
testimony about you. God, I pray that as we dive into your Word today, through the power of your Holy
-
Spirit, this will not just be factual information that we process, but God, through the power of
-
your Word, the power of your Spirit, God, that some will be saved. God, that lives will be transformed.
-
God, and we'll grow to be more the men and women of God that you've called us to be.
-
And I ask all these things in Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Amen. Also, I forgot to say this. If you're a
-
first-time guest, my wife and I will be back in the back as well at that table, the same table where
-
the Bibles are at the end of the service, and we would love to greet you. We would love to thank you.
-
We would love to welcome you for being here and worshiping with us. So if you wouldn't mind just a
-
couple moments, just stop back there, and if you do have any questions about who we are as a church,
-
be a wonderful place and opportunity to get those answered. Well, we're starting our summer series
-
this week, our new series. For years now, I feel like we've kind of gotten in some rhythms with how
-
we teach different things here at our church, not just topical versus expository, which we're
-
expository. We typically work through books of the Bible, but during the summertime, we kind of take
-
a transition time, I guess, for how we teach. We bring in a summer series, and so this summer series
-
that we're going to do is we're going to look at some common verses of the Bible. In fact, I would
-
argue that as I've looked through these, I'll be teaching through most of them. Dave's going to do
-
a couple. Josh is going to do one. That these verses of the Bible, if you've been around church,
-
if you've been in church, you've probably heard these verses before. Even if you haven't been in
-
church, maybe you've heard your friends or those around you or even on social media where people use
-
these very common verses, but we're not talking about these verses because they're common. We're talking
-
about these verses because they're common used verses that are oftentimes misunderstood and then
-
misused. Verses that we take and are misunderstood and misused. Now, when Dave and I were talking
-
about this and praying through doing this months ago, and I was really excited. I thought this would be
-
something that people would get excited about, that people would want to listen to and be a part of
-
and kind of find out these things. And then I started talking to some people over the last couple
-
weeks and I would hear phrases like, I'm a little scared about this series. And so like, if someone
-
tells me that they're scared, like, well, why are you scared? And they're like, I'm afraid that there
-
are verses of the Bible that I've been using and I've been using them incorrectly the entire way,
-
the entire time. So here's, I want to cover that with you really quickly as we get into this,
-
okay? I'm going to make an assumption this morning. And the assumption is this. Have you and I,
-
we're in this together. Have we ever misunderstood or misused scripture? Yes. Yes, we have.
-
Absolutely. There has been points and times where you have and where I have misunderstood and misused
-
scripture. Number two, does God's grace cover us when we do this? Yes. Yes. Now, I'm not going to hold
-
back from this because there have been points and times where I look and evaluate, had someone point
-
out, have conversations through, and when I realize that I've misused or misunderstood scripture,
-
I don't go, oh, whatever, not that big of a deal. I need to repent, come before the Lord and acknowledge
-
that. But God's grace covers this and it is good. It is good. Like, correction, we'll see this, we'll talk
-
about this a little bit later. Like, correction is not a punishment from God. Like, correction is a
-
gracious gift of God's grace or God's love for us, right? So when he corrects us, we experience his love
-
and his mercy and we understand it even more. So what's the goal of this series? What's the goal
-
of this series? The first thing, to correct where we've been wrong. To correct where we've been wrong.
-
You know, maybe we're wrong because we don't know. Maybe we're wrong because we've been mistaught.
-
Maybe we're wrong because we've been manipulated. Maybe we're wrong because we're reading scripture
-
through the context of our sin, of what's there. We want to correct where we've been wrong.
-
A few years ago, Immigration Center 17, a few years ago, God took us on a journey,
-
a difficult journey for them and for Aaron and I as we taught them how to drive, right?
-
They learned life lessons through that. Aaron and I, man, we clung to the Lord, right?
-
And God was faithful through it all. One of our kids was more, how should I say this?
-
Aggressive in their driving. And one of our kids was more passive in their driving. Both of those,
-
by the way, can put you in situations where you're afraid for your life.
-
I heard a mom, like, absolutely. Preach on.
-
So, one day
-
me and a particular child
-
were riding to school.
-
And we came to a red light.
-
And the light
-
was red for us.
-
That's red light.
-
Coming to it.
-
We need to turn right.
-
There's cars coming
-
this way. It's Highway 1.
-
And what I've learned is, like, I can be
-
aggressive
-
in instructions.
-
And I need to let go.
-
And so, I'm thinking in my mind, we should be slowing down.
-
Why aren't we slowing down?
-
Why aren't we stopping?
-
Why did we just turn
-
like this is, you know,
-
we're out in the middle of nowhere or whatever.
-
It's a red light. We just turn.
-
And I looked at the child that was
-
driving, and I said,
-
why did you just do that?
-
No grace,
-
no understanding,
-
judgmental dad
-
in the moment.
-
This child looked at me
-
and said,
-
yesterday
-
you told me
-
that I can turn right
-
on red lights.
-
Sure.
-
I absolutely
-
did.
-
That was the words
-
that I used.
-
But you misunderstood
-
because you had a bad teacher, right?
-
So, we had the conversation.
-
I'm at fault.
-
That child was right.
-
We're good.
-
We're good.
-
So, sometimes we've been taught wrong.
-
And the goal of this
-
is not to look
-
and point fingers,
-
but it's to correct
-
where we've been wrong
-
and to praise God
-
because we've been corrected, right?
-
Number two,
-
the goal for this series
-
is it's a desire for us
-
to help grow a heart
-
for deeper understanding
-
and application
-
of God's Word.
-
And both of these
-
are important, right?
-
We don't just want
-
to understand
-
God's Word.
-
We want to apply
-
God's Word
-
as we understand
-
God's Word.
-
And where we go wrong
-
oftentimes
-
in the usage
-
of Scripture
-
is number one,
-
it's either
-
an intellectual pursuit,
-
so let me gain knowledge
-
that doesn't play out
-
in application,
-
or
-
let me try to
-
apply the things
-
that I don't even know
-
if they are true.
-
And then oftentimes
-
they're not.
-
And that's what we'll see
-
in these,
-
that we've taken
-
misinformation
-
and we've tried
-
to apply it,
-
and then when it doesn't work
-
the way that we think
-
that it should,
-
but in our mind,
-
but I've done
-
what it says
-
even though we haven't,
-
then God's failed.
-
So we want to understand
-
and have proper application.
-
The other thing
-
that we want to do
-
is we want to grow together
-
as a community
-
with this,
-
as a community
-
of church together.
-
So what we will do
-
each week
-
following
-
the Sunday morning's
-
lesson,
-
so the next week,
-
so next Sunday morning
-
at 9 a.m.,
-
we will gather together
-
to discuss
-
this message
-
that I'm teaching
-
this morning.
-
And we want you
-
to be here.
-
We're going to gather
-
back in here
-
as many of you
-
that will come.
-
We'll have different
-
individuals come up
-
and facilitate
-
a discussion with us
-
where you'll talk
-
about some things
-
in some small groups.
-
We'll talk about
-
some things.
-
I can even answer
-
questions,
-
and I may even ask
-
questions as well
-
as we kind of navigate
-
through this.
-
So I'm inviting you
-
to join me
-
in this process
-
as we go through
-
this together
-
so that you
-
and I
-
can become
-
more faithful
-
in understanding
-
and applying
-
God's word.
-
Now,
-
when I talk to people,
-
and the other reason
-
why I think
-
this is always
-
so important,
-
anytime we can
-
come together
-
as a congregation
-
to kind of push
-
ourselves into
-
reading the Bible
-
is also for
-
accountability.
-
Because so many
-
of you,
-
and I've had
-
this conversation
-
and my heart
-
breaks with you
-
and for you
-
through this,
-
is that so many
-
people say,
-
like,
-
Bo,
-
and I believe
-
this about you.
-
I've been there.
-
Sometimes I even
-
am there.
-
I want,
-
I want to read
-
the Bible,
-
but I struggle.
-
I struggle
-
with understanding
-
the Bible.
-
And it is
-
complex.
-
There are parts
-
of it that are,
-
that seem to be
-
more simple,
-
parts of it
-
that seem to be
-
a little bit
-
more difficult.
-
Well,
-
a sermon series
-
that we're going
-
to do in the
-
fall is on
-
Daniel.
-
Right?
-
I'm going to tell
-
you,
-
that's going to,
-
it's going to
-
stretch you,
-
it's going to
-
stretch me,
-
it's going to
-
stretch my brain,
-
it's going to
-
stretch my heart.
-
Like,
-
I can't wait to
-
see what all
-
God's going to
-
do through this.
-
And it can be
-
a difficult process
-
and a difficult
-
journey.
-
But I began to
-
see and like
-
think through
-
and hear like
-
six things
-
I want to
-
give you
-
this morning
-
as we talk
-
about this,
-
of the reasons
-
why people
-
struggle in
-
understanding and
-
properly applying
-
the Bible.
-
And like,
-
man,
-
this is fingers
-
toward you,
-
fingers toward me,
-
like I'm in
-
this with you.
-
Number one is
-
this,
-
a struggle that
-
people have.
-
Let's be
-
completely candid
-
with one another.
-
a lack of commitment
-
and a lack
-
of discipline.
-
All right?
-
Lack of
-
commitment and
-
a lack of
-
discipline.
-
Have a plan.
-
Have a plan.
-
I heard somebody
-
say this the other
-
day.
-
They said,
-
any plan is
-
better than no
-
plan, but some
-
plans are better
-
than others.
-
Any plan is
-
better than no
-
plan, but some
-
plans are better
-
than others.
-
It's a lack of
-
commitment.
-
It's a lack of
-
discipline.
-
What you and
-
I need, if
-
we're going to
-
be the Bible
-
readers, the
-
Bible understanders,
-
the Bible
-
application that
-
God has called
-
us to, is that
-
you and I
-
need a plan.
-
So here's what
-
we're here for.
-
If you don't
-
have a plan, let
-
us help you
-
formulate a plan.
-
So many tools,
-
so many resources,
-
so many opportunities
-
that you can.
-
We want to
-
help you in
-
your commitment
-
and in your
-
discipline.
-
And I'll tell
-
you what we'll
-
do through the
-
course of this
-
week.
-
If you make a
-
commitment, I'm
-
going to tell you
-
at the end of
-
the message, the
-
verse that we're
-
going to talk
-
about next week,
-
and if you make
-
a commitment to
-
be here at
-
9 a.m.,
-
then you'll have
-
the opportunity
-
to talk about
-
what we have
-
and to continue
-
to see forward
-
as we keep
-
moving forward
-
with what God
-
has for us.
-
So number one,
-
a lack of
-
commitment and
-
discipline.
-
The second is
-
we have to
-
understand that
-
reading the
-
Bible is a
-
spiritual process.
-
reading the
-
Bible is a
-
spiritual process.
-
It's a work of
-
what God is
-
going to do in
-
and through the
-
person who is
-
reading his
-
word.
-
So let me ask
-
you this.
-
If we understand
-
that reading the
-
Bible is a
-
spiritual process,
-
do we do
-
spiritual things
-
as we prepare
-
to open his
-
word?
-
Do you begin
-
with prayer?
-
God, whatever
-
you have for me,
-
whatever your
-
word says,
-
Lord, through the
-
power of your
-
Holy Spirit,
-
would you teach
-
me?
-
Right?
-
like, that's
-
why I pray
-
every single
-
Sunday morning
-
before I
-
preach.
-
It's a
-
spiritual process
-
of what God
-
is going to
-
do.
-
Number two,
-
do you seek
-
to be
-
transformed?
-
To see
-
change, to
-
experience change
-
in your life?
-
And then with
-
that, are we
-
honestly, and
-
this, man, this
-
got me this
-
week, like as
-
we read, are we
-
looking to
-
repent?
-
Are we
-
looking to
-
repent for
-
God to bring
-
us to that
-
space?
-
So, a lack of
-
commitment, do
-
you read the
-
Bible, do you
-
understand that
-
it's a spiritual
-
process?
-
Number three,
-
are you not
-
using outside
-
sources?
-
We live in a
-
world where
-
there's so many
-
opportunities when
-
we struggle with
-
the Bible that
-
there are outside
-
sources that God
-
has used through
-
the blessing of
-
technology, through
-
the blessing of
-
education, through
-
the blessing of
-
books, through
-
the blessing of
-
others?
-
Are we using
-
outside sources to
-
help?
-
And we're going
-
to be building
-
some of these and
-
working with you
-
guys to help so
-
that we can grow
-
and that we can
-
learn.
-
I'm going to tell
-
you, one of the
-
wonderful things
-
that God has
-
blessed me with is
-
a library and
-
resources that I
-
can draw from and
-
I can pull from and
-
I can read from
-
godly individuals who
-
have studied the
-
scripture and the
-
power of the Holy
-
Spirit that depend
-
on Him.
-
We come together
-
for this.
-
Using outside
-
sources.
-
But then number
-
four, are we
-
overusing outside
-
sources instead of
-
trusting the Holy
-
Spirit?
-
Because if it is a
-
spiritual process and
-
the Holy Spirit
-
dwells in me and
-
He enlightens and
-
opens my mind to
-
understand and to
-
transform and change,
-
are we solely
-
looking for what the
-
educators have
-
taught us, the
-
seminarians have
-
taught us, our
-
pastors have taught
-
us, are we
-
depending on the
-
power of the Holy
-
Spirit to teach
-
us?
-
The next is that
-
we're reading, or
-
a reason why we
-
struggle with
-
continuing to read
-
the Bible is that
-
we're reading the
-
Bible not attached
-
to community.
-
Not attached to
-
community.
-
Do you have a
-
place where you
-
can ask questions?
-
Do you have people
-
who can pour into
-
you?
-
And do you have
-
people that you
-
can pour into?
-
The Bible, when we
-
begin to see the
-
early church in Acts
Acts 2 chapter mention
-
chapter 2, what we
-
find, one of the very
-
first things that it
-
talks about the local
-
church, is that they
-
were devoted to the
-
apostles' teachings.
-
That in and amongst
-
the community of
-
individuals there, they
-
said, this is what we
-
are doing.
-
There's no first
-
person singular
-
pronouns.
-
It's we.
-
It's we.
-
And are you engaged
-
in a community of
-
people that can
-
help hold you
-
accountable, where
-
they can help you
-
answer questions, but
-
where you can also
-
have wonderful
-
discussions and
-
dialogue about the
-
truth of God's
-
word.
-
And then the last,
-
and I think this is
-
often times what most
-
of us struggle with
-
right now, I'm sorry,
-
what we most struggle
-
with is that we read
-
the Bible with an
-
agenda.
-
We read the Bible
-
with an agenda.
-
We read the Bible
-
oftentimes with the
-
agenda that I'm
-
right, let me prove
-
that I'm right.
-
Instead of God is
-
right, let me see
-
where I am wrong, and
-
let me see where I am
-
right.
-
We remove the agenda
-
and we come at it
-
through the beauty of
-
God's word.
-
There is nothing more
-
so as a staff, apart
-
from someone coming to
-
faith in Jesus Christ
-
as their personal Lord
-
and Savior, than we
-
desire more than to see
-
those who are saved
-
through the work of
-
Jesus Christ to grow in
-
their relationship and
-
obedience to Him by the
-
power of the Holy
-
Spirit.
-
And we want to equip you
-
to doing that.
-
Several years ago, for
-
our adults in our adult
-
ministry, we purchased
-
Right Now Media.
-
We pay for it every
-
single month.
-
It's a wonderful online
-
tools that you can have
-
the app, that you can
-
have all the things.
-
We've got cards back in
-
the back with QR codes
-
that you can scan and
-
download, and there's
-
Bible study after Bible
-
study after Bible study
-
after Bible study.
-
There's men's studies,
-
there's women's studies,
-
there's for married people,
-
there's for single people,
-
there's for books of the
-
Bible, there's for topics,
-
there's all these things,
-
and we've given it and
-
said, here you go.
-
Take this, use this, walk
-
along through this to help
-
you break down, dissect,
-
and understand the beauty
-
of God's word.
-
I sent Joel Van Ham and
-
Don Coulter a text message.
-
I said, hey, this is what
-
I'm going to be talking
-
about.
-
Could you point me towards
-
some words to be able to
-
share with our congregation
-
so that they know if they've
-
got a youth or they've got
-
a child, how they can
-
better walk along, how you
-
can better walk along and
-
encourage them to engage in
-
this.
-
And they got giddy when I
-
said this.
-
So I'm going to read their
-
words, all right?
-
Here's from Joel.
-
Here's from Joel.
-
There are currently 32
-
youth and youth leaders
-
reading through the entire
-
Bible together.
-
We read one chapter a day.
-
We've been on our three-year
-
journey for about, for
-
almost a year.
-
We bounce between the Old
-
Testament and the New
-
Testament books, learning
-
how the Jewish people live
-
before Christ as well as
-
learning about our Savior's
-
life and what it means to
-
be an apprentice to Him.
-
A couple times a week, we
-
check in and ask or share
-
things gleaned from that
-
day's reading.
-
It is amazing seeing the
-
youth process through
-
difficult passages and how
-
those have strengthened their
-
faith.
-
Our youth team understands
-
how incredibly important it
-
is to learn how to study the
-
Bible when they are in a safe
-
home environment.
-
This learning tool developed at
-
this age will not only set a
-
precedent of importance, but a
-
good habit as they leave their
-
home.
-
All right, so parents, if you're
-
like, man, I got the teenager, I
-
want to connect them with this,
-
get with Joel, he'll get them
-
connected, and then you hop on
-
that journey with them.
-
Kids ministry.
-
You just heard our Bible story
-
buddies event that we have for
-
our little ones with
-
preschoolers where they get to
-
pick out and have all this fun
-
stuff, toys all built into it.
-
Dawn says it's a fun and
-
exciting way to encourage your
-
child to want to learn about
-
God as they get a Bible story
-
book and a Bible buddy to
-
encourage reading of daily
-
devotions.
-
And she said, we just announced
-
this, like you can register for
-
this now.
-
If you don't already, like you
-
can, if you're not already a
-
part of this, like you can get
-
your preschoolers connected with
-
this.
-
And then she said to reinforce
-
what they do on Sunday
-
mornings, right?
-
Because if you heard her
-
testimony, right, like we are
-
not, we are not the primary
-
disciple makers for your kids.
-
Parents, you are.
-
You are.
-
And we count it as a privilege
-
that you invite us into that
-
process, but we want to help
-
you grow in all this.
-
So she says, for our older
-
kids, the JTS show from our
-
Go curriculums, what they do
-
in the mornings, is posted
-
weekly after the Sunday lesson
-
to give opportunity for you
-
and your child to watch and
-
discuss the scripture and
-
questions together.
-
Now for copyright, we can't
-
just release that on our
-
website or on Facebook.
-
And so Dawn has sent this
-
out.
-
She's willing to do it
-
again.
-
So it's got to be password
-
protected.
-
So email or get with Dawn to
-
gain access to this
-
information.
-
What are we saying?
-
It's not just about coming
-
and what does the preacher
-
have to say.
-
It's a very inadequate way
-
for you and me to say,
-
how do I take what's in God's
-
word, understand it, process
-
it, and apply it to my life.
-
And it's a daily commitment
-
of a spiritual work of what
-
God is calling us to do.
-
And it's so important because
-
we live in a world of lies,
-
but we want to stand on the
-
truth of God's word.
-
And how can we apply the
-
truth if we don't know it?
-
If we don't spend time in it?
-
I mean, look at the beauty as
-
Paul writes to Timothy in 2
-
Timothy 3.
-
All Scripture is breathed out by
-
God.
-
Every word.
-
And profitable for teaching,
-
for reproof, for correction,
-
and for training.
-
The man of God
-
might be complete,
-
equipped
-
for every
-
good
-
work.
-
There's some theological
-
terms that we draw from
-
this, which is why we hold
-
to the Bible is the primary
-
source that we use to teach.
-
Because we believe in this, and we
-
believe from this.
-
Here are some phrases, some words
-
we're going to throw on the
-
screen as we work through this
-
this week of the importance, or
-
this summer, the importance of
-
this series, is that we believe
-
these things about God's word.
-
Number one, that we believe that
-
God's word is inspired.
-
We believe that God's word is
-
inspired.
-
And what we mean by that is
-
while the Bible was written by
-
over 40 authors over 1,500
-
years, every word in every part
-
of the Bible comes from
-
God.
-
And that means that the
-
inspiration extends
-
not just, extends to the very
-
words themselves, not just
-
concepts or ideas.
-
That every single word matters
-
and is a beautiful gift from
-
God.
-
And so inspiration extends to
-
all parts of scripture and all
-
subject matters of scripture
-
because we believe that God's
-
word is inspired.
-
The second thing is that we
-
believe that God's word is
-
authoritative.
-
Is authoritative.
-
And what we mean by authoritative
-
is the Bible is the ultimate and
-
infallible source of truth,
-
guidance and authority for Christians.
-
God's word.
-
This is the authority that we
-
apply to our life.
-
This goes beyond national affiliation.
-
This goes beyond political affiliation.
-
This goes beyond family affiliation.
-
This is the ultimate authority.
-
God's word.
-
In your life.
-
In my life.
-
Number three.
-
We believe that God's word is
-
inerrant.
-
Is inerrant.
-
We mean by that is the Bible
-
is without error.
-
Now,
-
you can go jump on YouTube
-
and dive in to a dark tunnel
-
of heresy.
-
Right?
-
There are issues
-
with translations.
-
Right?
-
The original languages
-
that this was written in.
-
Sometimes there's complications
-
in translations.
-
And so we work through that.
-
But the Bible is without error
-
because the Bible was the very
-
word of God.
-
And God is without error.
-
And the Bible was without error.
-
It's inerrant.
-
Number four.
-
The Bible is complete.
-
If you ever listen to someone
-
and they're like,
-
you know,
-
I heard a new word from the Lord.
-
No, they didn't.
-
And there's nothing to add to it.
-
God's word is full.
-
God's word is complete.
-
And all that God has to say to us
-
is what God has communicated to us
-
through His word.
-
Every point.
-
Complete through His scripture.
-
Nothing to add.
-
Nothing to take away.
-
It is complete.
-
We believe that God's word
-
is unified.
-
That God's word
-
tells a single coherent story
-
about God
-
and His plan
-
for humanity.
-
From Genesis to Revelation.
-
We see the thread
-
in the story of Jesus.
-
We see the rebellion
-
of God's people.
-
We see His love
-
and His pursuit
-
of them.
-
And we see His
-
and His only
-
means of salvation.
-
And we see that God's word
-
is sufficient.
-
It's sufficient.
-
The Bible
-
is sufficient
-
in that it is the only
-
inspired
-
and errant
-
word
-
and therefore
-
the final authority
-
for all Christians,
-
for faith,
-
for godliness.
-
And all we need
-
for salvation
-
is found
-
here.
-
Every part.
-
All we need
-
for salvation
-
is found here.
-
So,
-
why does this matter?
-
Turn with me
-
to Genesis chapter 2.
Genesis 2 chapter mention
-
Why does this matter?
-
Like,
-
in all the issues
-
that we're facing
-
in the world,
-
why do we,
-
largely with a group
-
of you
-
who were here last week
-
who will be back here
-
with us next week
-
or who are followers
-
of Jesus,
-
why does this matter
-
that we take
-
a whole season
-
and we want to focus in
-
on making sure
-
that we understand
-
that not only
-
God's word is true,
-
why do we take
-
the time
-
to point out
-
and to pick out
-
where you and I
-
have misunderstood
-
and then maybe
-
misapplied
-
the truth of God's word?
-
I'll take you back
-
to the garden
-
for a moment.
-
Read me
-
Genesis 2
-
verses 15 through 18.
-
It says,
-
the Lord took the man
-
and put him
-
in the garden of Egypt
-
and the garden of Eden
-
to work it
-
and keep it.
-
And the Lord God
-
commanded the man
-
saying,
-
you may surely eat
-
of every tree
-
of the garden,
-
but of the tree
-
of the knowledge
-
of good and evil
-
you shall not eat,
-
for in the day
-
that you eat of it
-
you shall surely die.
-
then the Lord God
-
said,
-
it is not good
-
that the man
-
should be alone.
-
I will make
-
a helper
-
fit
-
for him.
-
So there's so much
-
that we can draw
-
in this early
-
creation account,
-
but I just want to
-
paint the picture
-
of the setting
-
of what we see
-
in God
-
and his kindness
-
and his goodness
-
and his mercy
-
before sin
-
enters into the world
-
of God's plan
-
and God's communication
-
for man.
-
What we look at
-
is we see
-
that God gives
-
right here
-
at this very beginning.
-
What we see
-
in Genesis
-
is purpose
-
through work.
-
So work
-
is of God
-
and work
-
is good
-
and work
-
has purpose
-
and meaning
-
and we see
-
that
-
in perfection
-
and we see
-
that man
-
has relationship
-
with God.
-
God said
-
to him
-
there's this
-
beautiful
-
encounter
-
of what we see
-
that Adam
-
has this experience
-
that you and I
-
we don't have
-
the same kind
-
of experience.
-
See this depth
-
of relationship.
-
God spoke.
-
He heard
-
there's this
-
peace that's there.
-
We see this
-
beautiful partnership
-
with a spouse.
-
Like in perfection
-
marriage is the plan.
-
And God looks
-
at man
-
and he goes
-
it's not good
-
that this guy
-
is alone.
-
Right?
-
He needs a helper
-
a helpmate
-
is how we translate
-
that word
-
a partner
-
fit for him.
-
And we see
-
we see
-
right here
-
at the beginning
-
the very word
-
of God.
-
The very word
-
of God.
-
God's word
-
spoken.
-
God's word
-
heard.
-
God's word
-
experienced.
-
God's word
-
lived.
-
Now
-
jump over
-
Genesis 3
-
verse 1.
-
Now
-
the serpent
-
was more
-
crafty
-
than any
-
other beast
-
of the field
-
that the
-
Lord God
-
had made.
-
He said
-
said to the
-
woman
-
did
-
God
-
actually
-
say
-
you
-
shall not
-
eat
-
of any
-
tree
-
in the
-
garden.
-
And the
-
woman
-
said to
-
the serpent
-
we may
-
eat of
-
the fruit
-
of the
-
trees
-
in the
-
garden
-
but God
-
said you
-
should not
-
eat of
-
the fruit
-
of the
-
tree
-
that is
-
in the
-
midst
-
of the
-
garden
-
neither
-
shall
-
you
-
touch
-
it
-
lest
-
you
-
die.
-
But the
-
serpent
-
said to
-
the woman
-
you will
-
not
-
surely
-
die
-
for God
-
knows
-
that when
-
you eat
-
of it
-
your eyes
-
will be
-
opened
-
and you
-
will be
-
like God
-
knowing
-
good
-
and evil.
-
So when
-
the woman
-
saw the
-
tree
-
was good
-
for food
-
and that
-
it was a
-
delight to
-
the eyes
-
and that
-
the tree
-
was desired
-
to make
-
one wise
-
she took
-
of its
-
fruit
-
and ate
-
and she
-
also
-
gave some
-
to her
-
husband
-
who was
-
with her
-
and he
-
ate
-
and then
-
the eyes
-
of both
-
were open
-
and they
-
knew they
-
were naked
-
and they
-
sewed fig
-
leaves
-
together
-
and made
-
themselves
-
loincloths.
-
Here's
-
the danger
-
there's so
-
much
-
in this
-
passage
-
of scripture
-
in Genesis
-
3 about
-
the condition
-
of man
-
and the
-
pursuit
-
of flood
-
all these
-
things
-
but here's
-
brokenness
-
enters
-
sin
-
enters
-
there's
-
consequences
-
for their
-
actions
-
but I want
-
us to look
-
at this
-
encounter
-
they
-
did
-
Adam
-
and Eve
-
weren't in
-
the garden
-
one day
-
and
-
talking
-
through
-
what God
-
had for
-
them
-
in their
-
work
-
and just
-
decided
-
amongst the
-
two of
-
them
-
that they
-
were
-
dissatisfied
-
and walked
-
away
-
from their
-
purpose
-
but they
-
would
-
they
-
didn't
-
say
-
you know
-
God's
-
not
-
fair
-
to us
-
God's
-
not
-
good
-
to
-
us
-
and
-
let's
-
make the
-
choice
-
to walk
-
away
-
from their
-
relationship
-
with God
-
through their
-
experiences
-
and through
-
their
-
understandings
-
well they
-
will
-
but they
-
didn't
-
that's not
-
what we
-
see here
-
they
-
didn't
-
they
-
didn't
-
become
-
in what
-
we read
-
disgruntled
-
with one
-
another
-
she's not
-
walking around
-
and going
-
if there
-
were literally
-
any other
-
option I'd
-
take it
-
right now
-
you know
-
so where
-
does
-
the rub
-
come
-
where does
-
the fall
-
where does
-
break in
-
purpose
-
where does
-
break in
-
relationship
-
where does
-
break in
-
marriage
-
come from
-
they
-
listened
-
to
-
Satan
-
they
-
ignored
-
the word
-
of God
-
they
-
broke
-
from God's
-
word
-
here's the
-
caution
-
if you
-
and I
-
are not
-
active
-
and
-
invested
-
in the
-
truth
-
of God's
-
word
-
if we
-
become
-
lazy
-
in our
-
desire
-
to know
-
the word
-
of God
-
it can
-
be very
-
easy
-
in our
-
ear
-
to begin
-
to hear
-
did God
-
really say
-
that
-
God
-
wouldn't
-
God
-
wouldn't
-
limit
-
you
-
God
-
wouldn't
-
hold
-
you
-
back
-
go
-
after
-
you
-
if we
-
don't have
-
the foundation
-
of who
-
he is
-
in his
-
word
-
now
-
jump
-
with me

to

Luke

Jesus

Satan

-
we'll
-
see a

different

outcome
-
Luke 4

-
what
-
we
-
see
-
is
-
that
-
this
-
is
-
a
-
general
-
promise
-
of
-
God
-
to
-
his
-
people
-
that
-
God
-
will
-
care
-
for
-
his
-
people
-
and
-
Satan
-
uses
-
this
-
as
-
an
-
attempt
-
to
-
get
-
Jesus
-
God
-
that
-
I
-
trust
-
it's
-
in
-
him
-
not
-
in
-
you
-
you
-
see
-
what
-
Satan
-
will
-
do
-
is
-
take
-
the
-
message
-
of
-
God's
-
word
-
and
-
try
-
to
-
twist
-
it
-
and
-
manipulate
-
it
-
to
-
get
-
you
-
to
-
actually
-
move
-
from
-
the
-
expectation
-
of
-
God
-
to
-
move
-
from
-
who
-
God
-
is
-
so
-
that
-
in
-
your
-
mind
-
and
-
my
-
mind
-
God
-
fails
-
and
-
he
-
wins
-
let me
-
give you
-
an example
-
of that
-
if you
-
ask
-
somebody
-
about
-
the story
-
of God
-
and they
-
say
-
something
-
like
-
you know
-
let me
-
tell you
-
who
-
God
-
is
-
God
-
loves
-
you
-
just
-
the way
-
you
-
are
-
and they
-
place a
-
period
-
there
-
let me
-
tell you
-
something
-
God
-
does
-
love
-
you
-
God
-
does
-
love
-
you
-
right
-
where
-
you're
-
at
-
God
-
does
-
love
-
you
-
just
-
the way
-
that
-
you
-
are
-
but
-
that
-
phrase
-
is not
-
met
-
with a
-
period
-
but
-
a
-
comma
-
when we
-
begin
-
begin
-
to
-
understand
-
the
-
story
-
of
-
God's
-
word
-
accurately
-
applied
-
to our
-
lives
-
that
-
yes
-
God
-
does
-
love
-
you
-
just
-
the way
-
that
-
you
-
are
-
but
-
he
-
desires
-
to
-
save
-
you
-
and
-
transform
-
you
-
by the
-
power
-
of the
-
Holy
-
Spirit
-
so
-
now
-
it's
-
not
-
a
-
manipulation
-
of
-
God's
-
word
-
for
-
me
-
to
-
stay
-
in
-
my
-
sin
-
but
-
it's
-
a
-
calling
-
of
-
God's
-
word
-
to
-
wrestle
-
with
-
to
-
see
-
the
-
power
-
of
-
the
-
Holy
-
Spirit
-
working
-
in
-
so
-
that
-
as
-
that
-
old
-
leaves
-
and
-
as
-
the
-
new
-
come
-
it
-
is
-
praise
-
for
-
God
-
because
-
God's
-
word
-
is
-
powerful
-
in
-
church
-
it's
-
our
-
important
-
job
-
it's
-
our
-
calling
-
to
-
not
-
just
-
understand
-
it
-
but
-
to
-
apply
-
it
-
one
-
of
-
the
-
most
-
beautiful
-
pictures
-
we see
-
in
-
scriptures
-
Paul
-
is
-
writing
-
to
-
the
-
church
-
at
-
Ephesus
-
in
-
Ephesians
-
6
-
and
-
as
-
he's
-
writing
-
to
-
the
-
church
-
at
-
Ephesus
-
in
-
Ephesians
-
6
-
he
-
instructs
-
the
-
church
-
to
-
put
-
on
-
the
-
armor
-
of
-
God
-
and
-
he
-
does
-
this
-
so
-
that
-
they
-
can
-
stand
-
against
-
the
-
schemes
-
of
-
the
-
devil
-
and
-
he
-
uses
-
the
-
illustration
-
of
-
the
-
Roman
-
soldier
-
and
-
he
-
says
-
that
-
they
-
need
-
to
-
put
-
on
-
the
-
belt
-
of
-
truth
-
the
-
breastplate
-
of
-
righteousness
-
shoes
-
so
-
that
-
they
-
will
-
stand
-
firm
-
to
-
carry
-
with
-
them
-
the
-
shield
-
of
-
faith
-
to
-
put
-
on
-
the
-
helmet
-
of
-
salvation
-
and
-
when
-
we
-
look
-
at
-
those
-
what
-
we
-
see
-
is
-
a
-
soldier
-
preparing
-
for
-
defense
-
stand
-
firm
-
hold
-
on
-
be
-
willing
-
to
-
take
-
on
-
the
-
blows
-
of
-
the
-
enemy
-
that
-
come
-
but
-
then
-
but
-
then
-
Paul
-
says
-
but
-
we
-
do
-
get
-
offense
-
we
-
get
-
a
-
sword
-
and
-
here's
-
what
-
he
-
says
-
at
-
the
-
end
-
of
-
Ephesians
-
6
-
17
-
the
-
sword
-
of
-
the
-
spirit
-
which
-
is
-
the
-
word
-
of
-
God
-
church
-
that we
-
would
-
take
-
what
-
God
-
has
-
given
-
us
-
and
-
cherish
-
it
-
and
-
love
-
it
-
and
-
depend
-
on
-
it
-
and
-
understand
-
its
-
sufficiency
-
and
-
its
-
power
-
but
-
to
-
be
-
careful
-
but
-
to
-
be
-
careful
-
because
-
what
-
we
-
see
-
is
-
that
-
when
-
Satan
-
can
-
he'll
-
use it
-
against
-
you
-
why
-
wouldn't
-
he
-
if he
-
used it
-
on
-
Jesus
-
why
-
wouldn't
-
he
-
use
-
it
-
on
-
you
-
why
-
wouldn't
-
he
-
use
-
it
-
on
-
me
-
so
-
we
-
want
-
to
-
understand
-
God's
-
word
-
so
-
that
-
we
-
can
-
apply
-
God's
-
word
-
so
-
that
-
we
-
can
-
glorify
-
God
-
in
-
all
-
that
-
we
-
are
-
being
-
transformed
-
into
-
who
-
he's
-
called
-
us
-
to
-
be
-
the
-
point
-
of
-
this
-
series
-
is
-
not
-
to
-
create
-
an
-
attitude
-
of
-
fear
-
the
-
point
-
of
-
this
-
series
-
is
-
not
-
to
-
create
-
an
-
attitude
-
of
-
guilt
-
the
-
point
-
of
-
this
-
series
-
is
-
for
-
you
-
and
-
I
-
to
-
dive
-
deep
-
into
-
God's
-
word
-
to
-
delight
-
in
-
God's
-
word
-
to
-
discuss
-
God's
-
word
-
to
-
treasure
-
God's
-
word
-
to
-
see
-
God's
-
word
-
understood
-
and
-
rightly
-
applied
-
to
-
our
-
lives
-
it's
-
summertime
-
everybody's
-
busy
-
it's
-
summertime
-
everybody's
-
got
-
somewhere
-
to go
-
the
-
challenge
-
that I
-
have
-
for you
-
is
-
joining
-
us
-
as
-
we
-
continue
-
to
-
become
-
even
-
more
-
a
-
people
-
of
-
faith
-
and
-
a
-
people
-
of
-
God's
-
word
-
so
-
next
-
Sunday
-
nine
-
o'clock
-
gather
-
back in
-
here
-
give us
-
the
-
opportunity
-
to do
-
this
-
together
-
and
-
then
-
next
-
Sunday
-
at
-
1015
-
I'm
-
going to
-
teach
-
out of
-
Philippians
-
413
-
I
-
can
-
do
-
all
-
things
-
through
-
him
-
who
-
strengthens
-
me
-
would
-
you
-
pray
-
with
-
me
-
God I
-
thank you
-
for your
-
word
-
I
-
thank you
-
for the
-
truth
-
of your
-
word
-
God
-
thank you
-
for the
-
power
-
of your
-
word
-
God may
-
we as
-
a people
-
of
-
faith
-
come
-
to you
-
to want
-
to
-
understand
-
your
-
love
-
your
-
kindness
-
your
-
mercy
-
your
-
grace
-
your
-
goodness
-
God
-
as we
-
understand
-
Lord we
-
apply
-
so we
-
become more
-
and more
-
the men
-
and women
-
of God
-
that you
-
called us
-
to be
-
God where
-
Satan wants
-
to speak
-
up
-
and say
-
see I
-
told you
-
you were
-
wrong
-
where we
-
would
-
fall into
-
the pattern
-
of guilt
-
and shame
-
but fall
-
into the
-
arms
-
of our
-
God
-
and find
-
the grace
-
that when
-
we are
-
wrong
-
Lord you
-
correct us
-
Lord and
-
you forgive
-
us
-
God thank you
-
that you
-
forgive us
-
where we
-
fall into
-
the lie
-
believing
-
Satan
-
in the
-
did you
-
actually
-
say
-
instead of
-
seeing Lord
-
what you
-
actually
-
did say
-
Lord may
-
we not
-
pursue
-
your
-
word for
-
legalism
-
but God
-
may we
-
pursue
-
your
-
word
-
transformation
-
the power
-
of your
-
word
-
the
-
sufficiency
-
of your
-
word
-
that all
-
of it
-
every
-
word
-
breathed
-
out from
-
you
-
the very
-
word of
-
God
-
and Lord
-
we see
-
that it
-
all
-
it all
-
points us
-
to
-
Jesus
-
our
-
Lord
-
and
-
Savior
-
God
-
if there's
-
anyone here
-
this morning
-
they do
-
not
-
know
-
Jesus
-
Christ
-
as their
-
Lord
-
and Savior
-
Lord
-
I pray
-
that today
-
is the
-
day
-
where this
-
begins
-
come to
-
you
-
admitting
-
they're a
-
sinner
-
believing
-
in Christ
-
as the
-
and only
-
way of
-
salvation
-
confessing
-
him
-
as Lord
-
and Savior
-
and Lord
-
we celebrate
-
with the
-
angels
-
in Jesus
-
name
-
I pray
-
amen
-
that's it
-
for this
-
week's
-
message
-
