  4. If you have your Bibles, and I hope you do, I want to invite you to join us in just a moment

  5. in Romans chapter 8. If you don't have a Bible at the end of the service, stop by here by this black

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  6. table. We've got some black Bibles that are back there. We'd love for you to grab one of those.

  7. You can have one of those. It is yours. It is already for you. We want everyone to have a copy

  8. of God's Word, so please make sure that you stop by. And I want to echo what Berger said as well. If

  9. you are a first-time guest, we want to invite you. My wife and I will be back here at the table as well

  10. after the service is over with. We know you have a lot of places to be, but if you would just mind

  11. stopping back there so that we can meet you, so that we can thank you for being here, for worshiping

  12. with us, and just to be a part of that. One of the things about our church that I love so, so much

  13. is the opportunity that I have to take what God's been doing in my life and growing as a teacher of

  14. the Bible over 24 years now that God's given me the opportunity to do this and to invest in others

  15. who want to grow and do that. And this summer has been a lot with that. Robert Stevens is doing an

  16. internship, a teaching internship here through Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary where he's

  17. a student to get his Master's of Divinity that's there. So, Robert and I are working on some things

  18. with teaching. I've got the wonderful privilege, and this is really exciting and fun, to work with

  19. about four of our high school students who are looking to grow in becoming Bible teachers, and we

  20. will be using them on a lot of our youth trips to actually teach the Scripture for the week for the

  21. students who are there. And so, a wonderful opportunity. Like, if you want to learn some great

  22. questions and insights on Bible passages, like sit down with high school students and let them, as they

  23. dig through, ask those questions as well. But then also, one of the things in culminating today

  24. is Josh Nix, who's been on staff with us now this year working in our young adult ministry area,

  25. is going to come and share from God's Word this morning. This past year, when I went to India,

  26. the last time we went, I came up to Josh. I don't know Josh, about a month before we went,

  27. two months before we went, and I was like, hey man, one of the things we're going to be doing is doing

  28. like a small group training, those type things, and they want a message kind of at the end of that.

  29. And so, would you like to do that? And like, the look on his face was, I think, more like,

  30. am I asking for permission? Are you telling me? And so, Josh was like, well, sure, absolutely.

  31. And then Josh went there and did a phenomenal job of teaching the people in India God's Word.

  32. And so, as we came back and talking through, this is a wonderful opportunity for Josh to use his gifts

  33. and talents in a way and to develop those and grow those. And I will tell you, kind of watching Josh

  34. this week and the weeks leading up to this, man, the faithfulness that he has poured into studying

  35. God's Word and wrestling with what it says and really taking to heart the message that God has for him

  36. so that he can come and share with you guys what the truth of God's Word is. So, I will read the Bible

  37. verse and pray here in just a moment, but I want y'all to join me in giving him the warmest, most exciting

  38. welcome that y'all have in you this morning, all right? So, let's welcome Josh.

  39. And I'll just say, man, the front row is never this full for me, right? But man, for you, they've got it filled up.

  40. They've got it filled up. So, let's read Romans 8, 28, and then I will pray. God's Word says,

  41. and we know that for those who love God, all things work together for good for those who are called

  42. according to his purpose. Let's pray. God, I thank you so much for the beauty, the fullness, the completeness

  43. of your Word. God, I thank you that we can come in here and we can gather together, Lord, with confidence.

  44. This world is inconsistent.

  45. This world is chaotic.

  46. But God, we can come with the confidence

  47. of the truth of your Word.

  48. God, we lift up our brother Josh to you.

  49. God, we thank you for all that he is in Christ.

  50. We thank you for his dedication. We thank you for his faithfulness.

  51. We thank you for his diligence in your Word.

  52. And God, we know, Lord, we can't wait to see how you use him this morning.

  53. So, God, in every word that he says, in every truth that we hear, God, may you be glorified.

  54. And we thank you.

  55. We thank you that men and women desire your Word, desire to learn your Word,

  56. to know your Word, God, so that they can take the truth of your Word and pass it on to others.

  57. And God, we thank you for that.

  58. We ask all these things in Jesus' name we pray.

  59. Amen.

  60. So, as Pastor Bo alluded, my name is Josh Nix.

  61. I work on staff here at Willow Ridge and have, for about the last year and a half,

  62. in a full-time role for starting in January.

  63. So, my role here at the church is facilities and operations.

  64. And I also lead and direct our young adult group.

  65. And to be honest, since they gave me a mic and they haven't muted me yet,

  66. I don't feel like I can pass up this opportunity to plug our group.

  67. So, a young adult group consists of 18 to 24-year-old young men and women here in our church.

  68. We meet once a week on Sunday mornings in room 105, which is, like, right through that wall right there.

  69. About once a month, we gather for meals at my house.

  70. And we just, you know, we eat food, which I found that they always show up for, you know, a free meal.

  71. And we just, we get into the Word, we spend time together, we fellowship, we play games.

  72. It's just an opportunity for them to roast me and me just kind of take it.

  73. And it also works on my heart.

  74. So, if you are a parent of someone that's 18 to 24, or if you just know someone that needs a group to connect with,

  75. I'd encourage you to send them our way.

  76. We started out earlier this year, or really, I guess, at the end of last year.

  77. And, you know, it's been fun just to watch God work and move and grow our group.

  78. I guess two years ago, Pastor Bo, Pastor Dave, Joel Van Ham, they called me up and they said,

  79. Hey, man, we want to take you to lunch.

  80. For those of you in the room that have ever been invited to lunch by Pastor Dave or Pastor Bo,

  81. you know there's always something coming, right?

  82. So, we sat down and they said, Hey, we've noticed an area of need in our church for 18 to 24-year-olds.

  83. And we've got a children's ministry that's pouring into the life of our kids.

  84. We've got volunteers that are pouring into the life of our kids.

  85. We've got a youth group that's growing.

  86. We've got adult ministries where we've got discipleship, we've got retreats, mission trips.

  87. We do all these things for all these different areas of our church.

  88. But we've noticed that we just, we don't have anything for our young adults.

  89. And against my better personal judgment, I prayed about it.

  90. I felt like God was laying it on my heart.

  91. And so, I said I would do it.

  92. And through all of my inadequacies and through all of my fears and doubts, you know,

  93. feeling called, knowing there was a need.

  94. It's just been great to watch God work and move in them and through our group.

  95. And I kind of joke with them, well, not joke, I kind of tell them seriously, like, I lead

  96. our group, and it's fun to watch growth in them.

  97. But it's the blessing piece comes from when God just pours into me through them.

  98. And so, yeah, that basically, that's the story of our young adult group.

  99. That's my shameless plug.

  100. I'll move on to a little bit more about me.

  101. So, my wife, Kim, and I have been married for 17 years.

  102. For 12 of those years, we've called Willow Ridge Church our home.

  103. We've got three kids, Haley, the tall one, Samantha, the one that jumps off playgrounds,

  104. and Olivia, who wears her Croc shoes on the wrong feet on purpose.

  105. So, if you don't know them by name, you've seen them, I promise you.

  106. But however, prior to meeting my wife, prior to getting married, I actually grew up at Willow Ridge

  107. Church.

  108. When I was younger, we visited Agape Baptist Church on Platte Springs Road, and I grew up

  109. going to VBS and kids camp, and Miss Jackie was my Sunday school teacher, Miss Gail.

  110. And growing up in the church, in a Baptist church, in the South, you learned some things,

  111. right?

  112. You learned some things like, it's never a bad time for an impromptu potluck dinner in

  113. the fellowship hall, right?

  114. As you get into your teen years, you join the youth group, you learn that a lock-in, even

  115. if it sounds a lot like prison, it's not.

  116. It's actually fun.

  117. Then you get into your adult years, and you're asked to volunteer for one, and then you realize

  118. it actually is a lot like prison.

  119. Last but not least, and I'm praying that Beau doesn't come take over the stage after I

  120. say this one, you learn how important it is for your pastor to finish on time on a Sunday

  121. morning, right?

  122. Yeah, you guys know where I'm going with this, we've all been there, you get out late, all

  123. the churches on Highway 1 beat you to San Jose's, you pull in the parking lot, you got to park

  124. back there by the soccer field, which is like a mile from the front door, you park, you get

  125. out, you already know, but you walk in, the lobby's full, you wait on a table, and yeah,

  126. so the importance of finishing on time is heavy on my heart, so I'll do my best.

  127. So, I'm sorry, Pastor Beau, we still love you, but I think one of, growing up in a Baptist

  128. church in South Carolina, one of my favorite things was kind of the sayings, right?

  129. Like the things that you would hear people say.

  130. There's too many to count, there's too many to say, there's some I probably shouldn't repeat,

  131. so I won't, but one in particular was always cool, and I loved it, and so I'm going to try

  132. to do it with you guys this morning, I'm hoping for some crowd participation, because if it

  133. doesn't happen, I'm going to look really dumb.

  134. So, for those of you who know it, do it along with me, but God is good all the time.

  135. Okay, thank you.

  136. That's a tremendous weight off my chest.

  137. I don't know why I didn't think y'all wouldn't do it, but I'm really glad you did.

  138. However, Brent Hawkins didn't do it, so we're going to do it one more time, or we're going

  139. to do it for the next 35 minutes until you decide to participate.

  140. So, one more time, and also, too, for those who didn't know it prior to this, you get an

  141. opportunity now to fully participate, right?

  142. So, God is good all the time.

  143. Okay, good job.

  144. Give yourself a hand.

  145. Yeah, yeah, there it is.

  146. I'm not sure if you guys have felt this way, but something I've noticed in myself over the

  147. last few weeks, you know, kind of coming into this series, I mean, other than the fact that

  148. Bo asked me to preach, and that's terrifying, something I've learned about myself is no matter

  149. how comfortable or familiar I felt with a verse that we're talking about that week, like God

  150. has just had something for me each and every week.

  151. Like, I've just felt convicted of a way I've used it, or I've learned something new, and it's

  152. just, you know, it's been good to just see how God's working and moving through that.

  153. Two weeks ago, the young adult group is on its way back from a mission trip to New York.

  154. We did park ministry in Queens.

  155. Sunday is our travel day back, so we go through TSA.

  156. Nobody tried to get a gallon bottle of hair conditioner through TSA, so we actually got

  157. through it okay.

  158. We're sitting, waiting to board our plane, and it's about 1045 on a Sunday, and the thought

  159. occurred to me.

  160. I was like, man, I was like, you know, I hate we can't be at church.

  161. Like, I feel like we're missing out, but I've got to be honest.

  162. There was a part of me that was kind of glad I didn't have to feel convicted, you know what

  163. I mean?

  164. Like, by whatever Bo was preaching on.

  165. And so we fly back home, get back to the house, prepare for the week with kids' lunches

  166. and all the things.

  167. Come in.

  168. Come into my office the next morning, open up my laptop.

  169. There's an email from Pastor Dave.

  170. I'm like, okay, let's see what this is about.

  171. Open it up.

  172. And it's the questions for the discussion time at 9 a.m. for this week.

  173. And he said, hey, just a reminder, you're leading the discussion time.

  174. Here's the link for the YouTube video.

  175. Please watch it and prepare yourself for the questions.

  176. So thank you for the accountability, Pastor Dave, that I wasn't expecting.

  177. But no, I joke, but in all seriousness, it's been a lot of fun to see God work and move through

  178. this series for me in my personal life.

  179. And something I want to reiterate is that Pastor Bo said early on in this series, he said, you

  180. know, we're going through this together.

  181. And what that speaks to is each of us have encountered a verse that we've used the wrong

  182. way, either in a conversation or we've used the wrong way in our personal life and how we

  183. convince ourselves of something.

  184. And I think like it made me feel better in preparation to understand that like, I'm not

  185. alone in this.

  186. So as I prayed over this verse and truly felt God directly working in me, it really kind of

  187. gave me peace.

  188. So if you haven't already done it, turn your Bibles to Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  189. We're going to be in verse 28 and we'll cover 28, 29, and 30.

  190. Verse 28.

  191. And we know that for those who love God, all things work together for good for those who

  192. are called according to his purpose.

  193. For those whom he foreknew, he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his son in order

  194. that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.

  195. And those whom he predestined, he also called.

  196. And those whom he called, he also justified.

  197. And those whom he justified, he also glorified.

  198. Would you pray with me?

  199. God, I thank you for this morning.

  200. I thank you for the opportunity to come on this stage and share your word.

  201. And God, I pray that over the next however many minutes it takes me to get through this

  202. stuff, God, I pray that your word would be spoken.

  203. I pray that you would calm my nerves.

  204. And God, I just pray that you would open our hearts and our minds to hear what you have

  205. for us this morning.

  206. In your name, I pray.

  207. Amen.

  208. So, as believers, there are a few common ways that we misunderstand, misapply, or misinterpret

  209. the truth of Romans 8, 28.

  210. I think the first way, the first and maybe one of the more common ways that we misuse this

  211. verse is we take a verse like this and we apply it as a truth for non-believers.

  212. You know, Paul in this verse does not say, for everyone, all things work together for the

  213. good.

  214. Paul says, for those who love the Lord, all things work together for the good.

  215. When we read a verse like this, we, you know, it's one of those that like, I can kind of

  216. see like big bold letters on the front of somebody's t-shirt, right?

  217. Like, all things.

  218. And then underneath it, and maybe cursive or some kind of fancy writing that I can't think

  219. of the name of the font right now, it says like, work together for, and then big bold

  220. letters underneath it, good, right?

  221. We can see it in a local Christian bookstore, or maybe in like one of those Instagram shops

  222. where you're not sure if they're just trying to steal your credit card information, or if

  223. they're actually going to send you a t-shirt or not.

  224. We've seen it on social media, like 10,000 likes.

  225. I mean, how encouraging is it to think that all things work together for the good for everyone?

  226. It's pretty encouraging.

  227. And we can leave it at that, at that simplified, easy to digest wording.

  228. That's not what the verse says.

  229. Paul says, for those who love God, all things.

  230. And if that wasn't enough, you know, Paul finished the verse with, for those who are called according

  231. to his purpose.

  232. I was listening to a John Piper breakdown a couple of weeks ago on Romans 8, 28, and he

  233. stated something that I thought was cool.

  234. He stated that in Paul's writings, and all of Paul's writings, he made mention of loving

  235. God three times.

  236. Romans 8, 28, obviously our verse, 1 Corinthians chapter 2, and then he also mentions it again

    1 Corinthians 2 chapter mention

  237. later in 1 Corinthians.

  238. So I want to share those other verses with you as well.

  239. In 1 Corinthians chapter 2, verses 9 and 10, Paul writes, what no eye has seen, nor ear

    1 Corinthians 2:9

  240. heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him.

  241. You see, to be a believer is to love the Lord.

  242. You know, and this verse was written and meant as a promise to those who love God and are

  243. known by God.

  244. What does it mean to be known by God?

  245. In the book of Galatians, Paul writes, but now that you have come to know God, or rather

  246. to be known by God.

  247. You see, loving God and being in relationship with him makes us known by him.

  248. The other time Paul writes of loving God is in 1 Corinthians chapter 8, in verse 3, he

    1 Corinthians 8 chapter mention

  249. writes, but if anyone loves God, he is known by God.

  250. I feel like in this verse, Paul uses a couple of descriptions that, I mean, are right there,

  251. they're in the verse, so it's kind of obvious, and I've already shared them, but I want to

  252. dive into like those descriptions of like who this verse applies to.

  253. The first part of the verse says, for those who love God.

  254. This means people who have made a commitment to him, to live for him.

  255. Commitment meaning to serve in recognition and appreciation of who he is.

  256. Who he is as a faithful, loving, generous father.

  257. John 14, verse 21, it says, whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me.

    John 14:21

  258. And he who loves me will be loved by my father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.

  259. Loving God for who he is in himself requires commitment, requires a commitment to endure difficulty and suffering.

  260. To endure difficulty through those hard, difficult circumstances.

  261. It's trusting that when he makes a promise, like all things, he's faithful to keep it.

  262. The second way that Paul describes this verse and who it applies to, he says,

  263. those who have been called according to his purpose.

  264. Meaning those who have been brought into relationship with him.

  265. Christians.

  266. Believers.

  267. Romans 8.30, it says,

  268. I think if we're not careful as Christians, we run the risk of taking a verse like this and we can comfort a non-believer.

  269. And in that, we can mislead them.

  270. I mean, it doesn't mean that good circumstances can't happen in their life, right?

  271. Like good circumstances happen all the time.

  272. But to someone who doesn't know where the good is coming from,

  273. those circumstances can further harden and further delude their heart.

  274. Timothy Keller wrote,

  275. But when an unbelieving heart experiences a string of success and pleasures,

  276. it only reinforces the illusion and can make the worst sins in the human heart grow and take over.

  277. Sins like pride.

  278. Sins like overconfidence.

  279. Self-centeredness.

  280. Etc.

  281. As we dig deeper into this verse,

  282. we can establish that if, like Paul says,

  283. all of life's circumstances are for the good of those who love him

  284. and are called to his purpose,

  285. then there's also the strong implication,

  286. and honestly, we can establish that all of life's circumstances

  287. do not work for the good of those who do not love him.

  288. The promise of Romans 8.28 is not a promise

  289. that really applies to all things being good.

  290. It is a promise.

  291. But the promise of 8.28 is referring to the goodness of God

  292. who has a sovereign plan to use all of those things

  293. for the good of those who love him.

  294. Second way that we misuse and misunderstand this verse is

  295. we take a verse like this and we say,

  296. well, God uses some things for our good.

  297. Paul does not say some things work together for the good.

  298. Paul says all things.

  299. Romans chapter 11, verse 36,

    Romans 11:36

  300. he writes,

  301. for from him and through him and to him are all things.

  302. To him be glory forever.

  303. Amen.

  304. And then in Ephesians chapter 1,

    Ephesians 1:11

  305. verse 11 and 12,

  306. in him we have obtained an inheritance,

  307. having predestined according,

  308. I'm sorry,

  309. having been predestined according to the purpose

  310. of him who works all things

  311. according to the counsel of his will.

  312. So that we who were the first to hope in Christ

  313. might be to the praise of his glory.

  314. Last year,

  315. we as a church,

  316. we spent the entire year in the book of Genesis.

  317. And Pastor Bo spent several weeks

  318. on the story of Joseph.

  319. And so what Pastor Bo spent

  320. about two or three weeks on,

  321. I'm going to try to recap in about 10 minutes.

  322. So needless to say,

  323. I'm going to leave some things out.

  324. But I'd encourage you to go back

  325. and read on your own

  326. in the fullness of this story.

  327. Because it is hope.

  328. Because it does speak to how God works.

  329. So what do we know about Joseph?

  330. Well, we know Joseph was one of 12 sons, right?

  331. We know his father favored him

  332. above his brothers.

  333. And we know that his brothers

  334. despised him for it.

  335. We know that Joseph has a dream.

  336. Joseph probably didn't read the room very well,

  337. shares that dream with his brothers

  338. who already despise him.

  339. And they despise him even more because of it.

  340. He says,

  341. I'm going to be here.

  342. You guys are going to be here, right?

  343. So the father sends him

  344. to check on his brothers one day

  345. who are out pasturing the flock.

  346. The brothers see him

  347. off in the distance,

  348. conspire to kill him.

  349. But one of the brothers intercedes.

  350. Reuben says,

  351. don't kill him,

  352. let's throw him into a pit.

  353. So we see this picture of,

  354. it says the brothers sit down to eat.

  355. And it's kind of this picture

  356. of like them sitting here eating

  357. and Joseph's down in the pit.

  358. And the brothers off in the distance,

  359. they see a caravan of Ishmaelites.

  360. So now they see dollar signs.

  361. Hey, we should sell him.

  362. At this point in the story,

  363. Joseph has been sold

  364. by the Midianite traders

  365. to Potiphar in Egypt.

  366. Potiphar is an officer of Pharaoh.

  367. We get to chapter 39,

  368. verse 2 in the book of Genesis.

  369. It says,

  370. the Lord was with Joseph

  371. and he became a successful man.

  372. So we see this picture

  373. of Joseph being faithful to the Lord,

  374. encountering some hardship,

  375. like your brothers selling you

  376. into captivity kind of hardship.

  377. But we also see God's hand just working.

  378. We see God's hand moving

  379. in the fact that his brothers

  380. didn't just kill him.

  381. So Joseph's in Potiphar's house.

  382. He finds favor in Potiphar's eyes.

  383. It tells us that he's made overseer

  384. of the entire house.

  385. And again,

  386. we see God blessing Joseph

  387. and blessing this Egyptian's house

  388. for Joseph's sake.

  389. We continue on in the story

  390. and we see that Potiphar's wife

  391. desires Joseph.

  392. He refuses her multiple times.

  393. And then eventually,

  394. after his last refusal,

  395. he runs out of the house to get away,

  396. leaving his cloak behind.

  397. She accuses him of assault.

  398. Potiphar has Joseph thrown into prison.

  399. Chapter 39, verse 21.

  400. But the Lord was with Joseph

  401. and showed him steadfast love

  402. and gave him favor

  403. in the sight of the keeper

  404. of the prison.

  405. You see, at this moment,

  406. we don't see God remove Joseph

  407. from prison.

  408. We don't see God remove Joseph

  409. from the difficulty.

  410. We don't see him just remove

  411. all of his suffering.

  412. Continue on in chapter 40.

  413. It says,

  414. Pharaoh is angry with his cupbearer

  415. and his chief baker.

  416. He throws them into prison.

  417. And it says,

  418. the captain of the guard

  419. appointed Joseph to be with him.

  420. So here's this moment

  421. where the captain of the guard

  422. appoints Joseph

  423. to be with the cupbearer

  424. and the baker.

  425. Probably seems insignificant, right?

  426. Like to Joseph,

  427. it probably just seems like,

  428. okay, well, I'm put here.

  429. I'll do this.

  430. This is my job.

  431. So again, though,

  432. we see God working

  433. and moving

  434. through these circumstances.

  435. They have two dreams.

  436. Each one of them has a dream.

  437. Joseph interprets their dreams.

  438. For one guy,

  439. it works out well.

  440. The other guy,

  441. not so much.

  442. Chapter 40, verse 14.

  443. Joseph's talking to the cupbearer

  444. and he says,

  445. only remember me

  446. when it is well with you.

  447. And please do me the kindness

  448. to mention me to Pharaoh.

  449. And so get me out of this house.

  450. The only problem is

  451. the cupbearer doesn't remember him.

  452. Forgets about him.

  453. Two years later,

  454. two long,

  455. imprisoned years later,

  456. Pharaoh has a dream

  457. or has two dreams.

  458. Pharaoh brings in

  459. all the wise men

  460. and magicians in Egypt,

  461. in the region,

  462. and tells them of his dreams.

  463. No one can interpret them.

  464. It was then

  465. that the cupbearer

  466. remembered Joseph.

  467. Joseph interprets

  468. Pharaoh's dreams

  469. and then in chapter 41,

  470. verse 39,

  471. Pharaoh says to Joseph,

  472. since God has shown you

  473. all this,

  474. there is none

  475. so discerning

  476. and wise as you are.

  477. Verse 40.

  478. You shall be over my house

  479. and all my people

  480. shall order themselves

  481. as you command.

  482. As we continue on

  483. in this chapter,

  484. as Joseph interpreted,

  485. Egypt has seven plentiful years

  486. and the earth

  487. produced abundantly.

  488. And during those seven years,

  489. Joseph's guidance

  490. and under his leadership,

  491. they stored grain

  492. throughout all the cities

  493. of Egypt.

  494. So that when the seven years

  495. of abundance ended

  496. and the seven years

  497. of famine began,

  498. just as Joseph interpreted.

  499. And when the people

  500. of Egypt cried out

  501. for bread,

  502. Pharaoh's response was

  503. in chapter 41,

  504. verse 55,

  505. go to Joseph.

  506. What he says to you,

  507. do.

  508. God provided.

  509. God is working.

  510. God is moving.

  511. As we continue reading on,

  512. we find that it's not just

  513. the people of Egypt

  514. that come to Joseph for grain.

  515. We find that people

  516. from all over the region

  517. are impacted by this famine.

  518. It's severe.

  519. It's harsh.

  520. They need bread.

  521. They need grain.

  522. Chapter 42.

  523. 20 years later,

  524. Joseph's brothers

  525. are brought back

  526. into the story.

  527. You see,

  528. Joseph's family

  529. was impacted

  530. by the famine as well.

  531. And over the next

  532. couple of chapters,

  533. the brothers are sent

  534. to Egypt by their father.

  535. They're going to starve.

  536. And what we see

  537. over the next few chapters

  538. is this opportunity

  539. for Joseph

  540. to supply

  541. for his family.

  542. We see Joseph

  543. conceal his identity

  544. so his brothers

  545. don't know it's him,

  546. but he knows it's them.

  547. He sends the brothers

  548. back with grain

  549. and then they run out

  550. and then they come back

  551. for more.

  552. And it's just,

  553. there's a lot there.

  554. So again,

  555. I encourage you,

  556. go back and read it

  557. on your own this week.

  558. But what we see

  559. in this is Joseph

  560. providing for his family

  561. during the famine.

  562. God using Joseph.

  563. God is good

  564. all the time.

  565. As Christians,

  566. we know God is good.

  567. We know him

  568. to be good.

  569. but what does that mean?

  570. I'm reading this book

  571. and was reading it

  572. in preparation

  573. for this series

  574. and this sermon.

  575. But Eric Bargerhoff

  576. writes

  577. in reference

  578. to God's goodness,

  579. he says,

  580. to say that God is good

  581. is to say that

  582. within the heart of God

  583. he is morally

  584. excellent and kind.

  585. His heart is true.

  586. His love is pure

  587. and his kindness

  588. is seen

  589. in the goodness

  590. and mercy

  591. that he gives

  592. in abundance.

  593. So we've covered

  594. some common misuses

  595. and misunderstandings

  596. of Romans 8.28

  597. but I'd like to spend

  598. what's left

  599. of our time

  600. just talking about

  601. what this verse

  602. means to the believers.

  603. What this verse

  604. means

  605. and the hope

  606. that it brings

  607. to those who love him

  608. and are called

  609. to his purpose.

  610. Number one,

  611. God's promises

  612. stand

  613. despite my circumstances.

  614. Before the story

  615. of Joseph,

  616. a promise

  617. had been made

  618. to Abraham

  619. that God

  620. would make

  621. many nations

  622. of him

  623. and that promise

  624. was put

  625. into peril

  626. by the famine

  627. that God

  628. called upon

  629. the region

  630. but God

  631. made a way.

  632. Psalm 105

    Psalms 105:16

  633. verses 16

  634. and 17

  635. this is David

  636. writing about

  637. the story

  638. of Joseph

  639. and the famine

  640. in verse 16

  641. he says,

  642. when he summoned

  643. a famine

  644. on the land

  645. and broke

  646. all supply

  647. of bread

  648. he had sent

  649. a man

  650. ahead of them

  651. Joseph

  652. who was sold

  653. as a slave.

  654. God was working

  655. to ensure

  656. that his promise

  657. was kept.

  658. In Romans 8

  659. 28

  660. Paul writes

  661. all things

  662. work together

  663. for the good.

  664. And the good

  665. that Paul

  666. is talking about

  667. if we relate it

  668. to the story

  669. to the story

  670. of Joseph

  671. is not

  672. Joseph's health.

  673. It's not

  674. his comfort.

  675. Not even

  676. his freedom.

  677. The good

  678. that Paul

  679. is talking

  680. about

  681. is his heart.

  682. And as we

  683. apply Paul's

  684. writing

  685. to our lives

  686. the good

  687. is not

  688. in our health.

  689. It's not

  690. in our wealth.

  691. It's not

  692. the health

  693. of our kids.

  694. It's not

  695. the American

  696. dream.

  697. Romans 8

  698. 29

  699. through 30

  700. for those

  701. whom he

  702. foreknew

  703. he also

  704. predestined

  705. to be

  706. conformed

  707. to the

  708. image

  709. of his

  710. son

  711. in order

  712. that he

  713. might be

  714. the firstborn

  715. among many

  716. brothers.

  717. In those

  718. whom he

  719. predestined

  720. he also

  721. called.

  722. In those

  723. whom he

  724. called

  725. he also

  726. justified.

  727. In those

  728. whom he

  729. justified

  730. he also

  731. glorified.

  732. the good

  733. that Paul

  734. is referring

  735. to is

  736. our

  737. sanctification.

  738. Our

  739. character.

  740. Our

  741. holiness.

  742. He's

  743. molding

  744. and changing

  745. you

  746. to be

  747. more like

  748. Christ.

  749. So in

  750. this story

  751. eventually

  752. Joseph

  753. reveals

  754. who he

  755. is

  756. to his

  757. brothers.

  758. There's

  759. weeping.

  760. There's

  761. embracing.

  762. There's

  763. fear.

  764. But there's

  765. also

  766. reconciliation.

  767. And as

  768. we read

  769. through the

  770. story of

  771. Joseph I

  772. think it's

  773. easy for

  774. us to

  775. get wrapped

  776. up in

  777. the famine.

  778. Right?

  779. Like we

  780. can understand

  781. famine.

  782. We can

  783. understand

  784. difficulty.

  785. I can

  786. relate to

  787. the difficulty

  788. in my

  789. life.

  790. I can

  791. relate to

  792. hard

  793. circumstances.

  794. I think

  795. we can

  796. even process

  797. how 20

  798. years

  799. of

  800. suffering

  801. and

  802. difficulty

  803. can be

  804. for

  805. Joseph's

  806. ultimate

  807. good

  808. and how

  809. he's

  810. able to

  811. save

  812. his

  813. family

  814. and

  815. provide

  816. for

  817. his

  818. family.

  819. But if

  820. we aren't

  821. careful we

  822. can miss

  823. the point

  824. of what

  825. God truly

  826. has in

  827. the story

  828. for us.

  829. And it's

  830. how God

  831. took a

  832. faithful

  833. servant

  834. and molded

  835. him to

  836. be more

  837. like

  838. Christ

  839. and how

  840. God

  841. continued

  842. to

  843. work

  844. through

  845. what

  846. we

  847. see

  848. as

  849. chaos

  850. and

  851. what

  852. he

  853. sees

  854. as

  855. our

  856. good.

  857. In

  858. Genesis

    Genesis 50:15

  859. chapter

  860. 50

  861. verse

  862. 15

  863. Joseph's

  864. father

  865. Jacob

  866. had just

  867. passed

  868. away

  869. and his

  870. brothers

  871. responded

  872. he said

  873. when

  874. Joseph's

  875. brothers

  876. saw

  877. that

  878. their

  879. father

  880. was

  881. dead

  882. they

  883. said

  884. it

  885. may

  886. be

  887. that

  888. Joseph

  889. will

  890. hate

  891. us

  892. and

  893. pay

  894. us

  895. back

  896. for

  897. all

  898. the

  899. evil

  900. that

  901. we

  902. did

  903. to

  904. him.

  905. Five

  906. verses

  907. later

  908. we see

  909. Joseph's

  910. response.

  911. Verse

  912. 20

  913. As

  914. for you

  915. you

  916. meant

  917. evil

  918. against

  919. me

  920. but

  921. God

  922. meant

  923. it

  924. for

  925. good.

  926. To

  927. bring

  928. it

  929. about

  930. that

  931. many

  932. people

  933. should

  934. be

  935. kept

  936. alive

  937. as

  938. they

  939. are

  940. today.

  941. Notice

  942. in that

  943. that

  944. Joseph

  945. doesn't

  946. say

  947. but

  948. God

  949. used

  950. it

  951. for

  952. good.

  953. See

  954. used

  955. it

  956. implies

  957. a

  958. reaction.

  959. Used

  960. it

  961. implies

  962. that

  963. he's

  964. caught

  965. off

  966. guard

  967. by

  968. it.

  969. Joseph

  970. said

  971. God

  972. meant

  973. it

  974. for

  975. good.

  976. He

  977. ordained

  978. it.

  979. He

  980. planned

  981. it.

  982. had

  983. purpose

  984. in

  985. it

  986. from

  987. the

  988. very

  989. start.

  990. And

  991. what

  992. God

  993. shows

  994. us

  995. that

  996. he

  997. has

  998. done

  999. through

  1000. the

  1001. story

  1002. of

  1003. Joseph

  1004. is

  1005. not

  1006. just

  1007. a

  1008. plan

  1009. to

  1010. save

  1011. his

  1012. people

  1013. but

  1014. it's

  1015. a

  1016. plan

  1017. for

  1018. us.

  1019. God

  1020. has

  1021. always

  1022. loved

  1023. you.

  1024. God

  1025. has

  1026. plans

  1027. for

  1028. you.

  1029. Those

  1030. plans

  1031. to use

  1032. all

  1033. things.

  1034. Not

  1035. in

  1036. isolation

  1037. of one

  1038. another.

  1039. But

  1040. all

  1041. things

  1042. for

  1043. our

  1044. good.

  1045. Second

  1046. and last

  1047. point

  1048. that I

  1049. want to

  1050. make

  1051. about

  1052. the

  1053. hope

  1054. that

  1055. this

  1056. verse

  1057. brings

  1058. and

  1059. then

  1060. I'll

  1061. close.

  1062. Got to

  1063. get you

  1064. guys

  1065. to San

  1066. Jose's.

  1067. Nothing

  1068. is

  1069. wasted.

  1074. I

  1075. consider

  1076. that

  1077. the

  1078. sufferings

  1079. of

  1080. this

  1081. present

  1082. time

  1083. are

  1084. not

  1085. worth

  1086. comparing

  1087. with

  1088. the

  1089. glory

  1090. that

  1091. is

  1092. to

  1093. be

  1094. revealed

  1095. to

  1096. us.

  1106. broken

  1107. hearted

  1108. and

  1109. saves

  1110. the

  1111. crushed

  1112. in

  1113. spirit.

  1114. In

  1115. my

  1116. life

  1117. I've

  1118. often

  1119. seen

  1120. the

  1121. good

  1122. as

  1123. something

  1124. God

  1125. gives

  1126. me.

  1127. Blessings

  1128. to be

  1129. thankful

  1130. for.

  1131. But

  1132. the

  1133. bad

  1134. hard

  1135. stuff.

  1136. The

  1137. promotion

  1138. I

  1139. deserved

  1140. but

  1141. didn't

  1142. get.

  1143. The

  1144. car

  1145. breaking

  1146. down.

  1147. The

  1148. loss

  1149. of a

  1150. loved

  1151. one.

  1152. Difficulty

  1153. in my

  1154. marriage

  1155. or my

  1156. other

  1157. relationships.

  1158. A

  1159. cancer

  1160. diagnosis.

  1161. At my

  1162. worst I've

  1163. seen

  1164. circumstances

  1165. like this

  1166. as crippling.

  1167. I've

  1168. allowed

  1169. doubt

  1170. to creep

  1171. in.

  1172. Maybe

  1173. not to

  1174. the

  1175. point

  1176. where I

  1177. lose

  1178. trust

  1179. that

  1180. God

  1181. is

  1182. good

  1183. but

  1184. the

  1185. doubt

  1186. that

  1187. creeps

  1188. in

  1189. that

  1190. he

  1191. could

  1192. use

  1193. it

  1194. for

  1195. my

  1196. good.

  1197. And

  1198. to be

  1199. honest

  1200. at my

  1201. best

  1202. while I've

  1203. seen

  1204. these

  1205. circumstances

  1206. I've

  1207. seen

  1208. these

  1209. things

  1210. as

  1211. something

  1212. he

  1213. steps

  1214. in

  1215. to

  1216. fix.

  1217. Something

  1218. he

  1219. reacts

  1220. to.

  1221. Something

  1222. he

  1223. rescues

  1224. me

  1225. from.

  1226. This is

  1227. probably

  1228. the most

  1229. common

  1230. way that

  1231. I misuse

  1232. this verse

  1233. by the

  1234. way.

  1235. Just to

  1236. be

  1237. transparent.

  1238. But I'm

  1239. learning in

  1240. this that

  1241. God is

  1242. just as

  1243. present and

  1244. purposeful in

  1245. the lows as

  1246. he is the

  1247. highs.

  1248. He's not

  1249. just the

  1250. one that

  1251. pulls me

  1252. out.

  1253. He's the

  1254. one who

  1255. walks with

  1256. me through

  1257. it.

  1258. Because

  1259. God

  1260. with God

  1261. triumphs and

  1262. tribulations

  1263. work together.

  1264. He doesn't

  1265. just allow

  1266. it.

  1267. He plans

  1268. it.

  1269. He has

  1270. purpose for

  1271. it.

  1272. He doesn't

  1273. just fix

  1274. what's

  1275. broken.

  1276. He molds

  1277. us with

  1278. it.

  1279. All

  1280. things

  1281. working

  1282. together

  1283. for my

  1284. good.

  1285. Paul

  1286. throughout

  1287. Romans 8

  1288. is painting

  1289. a picture

  1290. of how

  1291. God

  1292. is weaving

  1293. the great

  1294. triumphs

  1295. and terrible

  1296. tragedies

  1297. all together

  1298. for his

  1299. sovereign

  1300. purpose.

  1301. And I'll

  1302. close with

  1303. this.

  1304. In reference

  1305. to Psalm

  1306. 105 where

  1307. David's speaking

  1308. of Joseph

  1309. and the

  1310. famine,

  1311. Charles Spurgeon

  1312. had a quote

  1313. that I thought

  1314. was kind of

  1315. cool and so

  1316. I figured

  1317. I'd read it

  1318. out loud.

  1319. He said,

  1320. the iron

  1321. fetters

  1322. were preparing

  1323. him to wear

  1324. chains of

  1325. gold and

  1326. making his

  1327. feet ready

  1328. to stand

  1329. on high

  1330. places.

  1331. It is

  1332. even so

  1333. with all

  1334. the Lord's

  1335. afflicted

  1336. ones that

  1337. they too

  1338. shall one

  1339. day step

  1340. from their

  1341. prisons to

  1342. their

  1343. thrones.

  1344. So I'll

  1345. ask you

  1346. this morning

  1347. if you're

  1348. here

  1349. and you

  1350. don't have

  1351. a relationship

  1352. with the

  1353. Lord

  1354. or if

  1355. you're just

  1356. not 100%

  1357. sure that

  1358. the hope

  1359. of Romans

  1360. 8.28

  1361. applies to

  1362. you,

  1363. I'd encourage

  1364. you to speak

  1365. to someone

  1366. about salvation.

  1367. You know,

  1368. the Bible

  1369. says for

  1370. those who

  1371. call upon

  1372. the name

  1373. of the

  1374. Lord

  1375. they'll

  1376. be

  1377. saved.

  1378. Billy Graham

  1379. was once

  1380. speaking to

  1381. a crowd

  1382. in Yankee

  1383. Stadium

  1384. and kind

  1385. of during

  1386. his altar

  1387. call he

  1388. said,

  1389. I tell

  1390. you,

  1391. before you

  1392. leave this

  1393. great stadium

  1394. you can

  1395. find an

  1396. answer to

  1397. the dilemma

  1398. and mysteries

  1399. of life

  1400. if you

  1401. will come

  1402. and surrender

  1403. yourself

  1404. without

  1405. reservation

  1406. to

  1407. Jesus.

  1408. If you

  1409. don't have

  1410. a relationship

  1411. with the

  1412. Lord this

  1413. morning,

  1414. my prayer

  1415. is that

  1416. you would

  1417. come

  1418. without

  1419. reservation.

  1420. And if

  1421. you're here

  1422. and you

  1423. are a

  1424. believer

  1425. but maybe

  1426. you're just

  1427. going through

  1428. some stuff.

  1429. Some

  1430. circumstances

  1431. and some

  1432. difficulties

  1433. that just

  1434. can't make

  1435. sense of

  1436. too hard.

  1437. I pray

  1438. that you

  1439. would just

  1440. lean into

  1441. the promise

  1442. that it's

  1443. all things

  1444. working

  1445. together

  1446. for your

  1447. good.

  1448. But also

  1449. trust that

  1450. you're not

  1451. alone.

  1452. You have

  1453. a church

  1454. family that

  1455. loves you

  1456. and wants

  1457. to connect

  1458. with you.

  1461. encourager

  1463. few minutes.

  1464. Find a

  1465. prayer

  1466. encourager.

  1467. Find

  1468. Pastor

  1469. Bo.

  1470. Find

  1471. me.

  1472. Find

  1473. anyone.

  1474. If God

  1475. is working

  1476. in your

  1477. heart this

  1478. morning,

  1479. don't leave

  1480. this place

  1481. without a

  1482. conversation.

  1483. Would you

  1484. pray with

  1485. me?

  1486. God,

  1487. I thank

  1488. you for

  1489. this morning

  1490. and I

  1491. thank you

  1492. that I get

  1493. to be a

  1494. part of

  1495. just a

  1496. church

  1497. family that

  1498. loves me

  1499. and pours

  1500. into me

  1501. and loves

  1502. and pours

  1503. into my

  1504. kids.

  1505. God, I

  1506. thank you

  1507. for this

  1508. promise.

  1509. I thank you

  1510. for the

  1511. truth that

  1512. you are

  1513. working all

  1514. things, all

  1515. circumstances

  1516. for my

  1517. good.

  1518. God, speak

  1519. to our

  1520. hearts.

  1521. Bring us

  1522. into conversation

  1523. with you this

  1524. morning, Lord.

  1525. In your name

  1526. I pray.

  1527. Amen.

  1528. That's it

  1529. for this

  1530. week's

  1531. message.

  1532. Be sure

  1533. to check

  1534. back next

  1535. week for

  1536. a new

  1537. episode and

  1538. in the

  1539. meantime,

  1540. you can
