  4. Hey, guys. Well, good morning again. If you have your Bibles, and I hope you do, I want to invite you

  5. to join me in Daniel chapter 2. We're continuing on in our fall series. We're in week 3 as we study

    Daniel 2 chapter mention

  6. through Daniel last week, the previous two weeks, looking at Daniel chapter 1. If you do not own a

    Daniel 1 chapter mention

  7. Bible, if you don't have a Bible, I want to encourage you to stop by that black table that I'm going to

  8. be at at the end of the service. We have some free copies of the Bible we would like to give you as a

  9. gift from us to you, whether you're a guest or a member here, or you find yourself, you don't know

  10. what you are here, but you're here and you want a copy of God's Word. We would love to be able to give

  11. you a copy of God's Word. And so as we prepare ourselves for our message this morning that God

  12. has for us, I want to read out of Daniel 2. I'm going to read verses 20 through 23. It says,

  13. Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, to whom belong wisdom and might.

  14. He changes times and seasons. He removes kings and sets up kings. He gives wisdom to the wise and

  15. knowledge to those who have understanding. He reveals deep and hidden things. He knows what is in the

  16. darkness and the light dwells with him. To you, O God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise for you

  17. have given me wisdom and might, and now have made known to me what we asked of you. For you have made

  18. known to us the king's matter. Would you pray with me? God, I thank you for this time that we could be

  19. here, that we could be in your Word. God, I thank you what a privilege and an honor it is to have

  20. a copy of your Word, to be able to gather here together. And so Lord, as we do, Lord, we pray that

  21. you would work and move in only how you can work and move. May all that's said and done in this place

  22. bring glory and honor to your name and your name alone. And God, may these words that I share not be

  23. the words from my mind, from the words of my heart, but Lord, may it be your words as we seek to glorify

  24. you. And God, if there's anyone here who does not know Christ as their personal Lord and Savior,

  25. may today be the day of their salvation. We ask all these things in Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Amen.

  26. One of the, I think, the interesting aspects of our faith, and as we look at Daniel overall, we see

  27. Daniel is a man of God placed into a culture that is not godly. And that we even though find that Daniel,

  28. even though he's coming from God's people, he's an Israelite of Judah, that even though he's coming

  29. from God's people, that the people and the culture that he comes from, even though they're God's chosen

  30. people, they've come compromised. And so what we find is that Daniel is this man with, well, technically

  31. boy when we saw him last week. And this week, we're going to kind of jump forward a few years, and we'll see

  32. that he's probably somewhere between like 17 and 18 years old in the history of his life. But we see

  33. that he is a man who has decided that this is the stand that I'm going to take to be different. And

  34. not to be different for different's sake, not to be different so that he'll draw attention to himself,

  35. but he was different than the rest of the Israelites who didn't want to obey God. He's different from the

  36. pagan Babylonians who want to worship their God, and he does so with a purpose and a heart and a desire

  37. so that he can be obedient to God and glorify him. And so Daniel makes this resolve, what we saw last

  38. week, that he will be different. And I would guarantee you that's not the first time that Daniel has

  39. resolved, in spite of the circumstances and the events of his life, to be a man of God. He has resolved this.

  40. The hand of God has placed him where he is placed, and Daniel resolves to glorify and honor God.

  41. So Daniel will react, and we'll see this this week even to a greater depth than we saw last week.

  42. Daniel will react to situations and to circumstances different than the people of his day and the people

  43. of his time. And you and I, we're called as Christ followers, as those who have been saved by Christ,

  44. who have our hope, our eternity, our tomorrow, our right now set in him, right? We are called to

  45. respond differently in the moment, whatever the moment is, than maybe the way that the world would

  46. respond in the moment, right? Like when we hear of, we respond to life differently. We respond to life

  47. differently. We hold every life-bearing human as an image bearer of God, and so they are treated

  48. differently. And where that begins to manifest itself in a lot of different ways is like, I thought about

  49. this, like when we, when we hear of life, especially like in pregnancy, like pregnancy, both expected and

  50. unexpected pregnancy, right? We see these children for what they are, as a blessing of God. And so we

  51. celebrate him. We respond differently than the world responds. We respond to death differently.

  52. Now we mourn, right? Like you and I, we lose someone who's, who's near to us, who's dear to us. And, and we

  53. mourn. We, we, we weep. We, we have sorrow, but we have all of those emotions. But we are those people

  54. who don't mourn because we're at a loss, but we're, we mourn because we're at loss of someone we love, but

  55. we're, we're, we're, we're filled with hope because of the hope that we have in Christ, especially

  56. when the person who we're mourning is a fellow believer in Christ, right? So we mourn, but we mourn

  57. differently, right? Think about like how you receive praise, right? When someone tells you, atta boy, atta girl,

  58. good job, pat on the back, thumbs up, can't believe you did this, you're awesome, right? Right? The world wants to,

  59. to see that and, and wants to say, yeah, look at who you are. Look at what you've done. Look at what

  60. you've accomplished. But as people of God in the same instances, right? We, we receive that praise with,

  61. with humility, right? Because we know that anything that's good, that's of us, right? All praise and

  62. honor and glory to God. So thank you for the praise, but we reflect it to our, to one who's worthy of,

  63. of all praise, right? You thought about like the misfortune of others, like how do you respond to that?

  64. Especially the misfortune of others when you and that other don't really gel very well,

  65. you know what I mean? Right? Like we're, we're told like we, we should not delight in the misfortune

  66. of others. So even if it's somebody that, that's out against us, even if it's, but someone who, who our

  67. personalities clash with, right? Like our heart and our posturing is not to go, yep, they got it, right?

  68. Right? But, but we don't, we don't delight in those things. We, we, we pray for them.

  69. Right? We endure. Right? We endure. We endure. The Bible's clear, like, like we don't run from,

  70. we endure, we pray, we don't lash out.

  71. Financial increase and financial decrease. Do you know that our response in those is supposed to be

  72. the same thing. Financial increase, financial decrease. Response, the same thing. Trust God with

  73. what to do. Right? Regardless if it's more or if it's less, we are people who trust God. God is

  74. sovereign in overall things, so, so we can trust. But now this morning, I specifically want to look at

  75. an aspect that we're going to see in the life of Daniel, and it's that of crisis. And you may look

  76. back at some of those other examples that we gave, and you see, well, financial decrease, that could

  77. definitely be a crisis. Persecution, that could be crisis, right? Like all the different things that

  78. begin to pile up in our life. But specifically, so, so maybe we're thinking broad, but we're going to

  79. think through this morning, how do we as men and women of God respond in crisis? And do we respond in the

  80. same way that the world responds in crisis? So this is the question for you, like we looked at last week,

  81. right? I'm not here to prescribe to you a predetermined outcome for where you feel like

  82. you fall in your resolve in the culture. So I want to task you with wrestling with this question

  83. this morning. Not how does your spouse, not how do your kids, not how do those people around you,

  84. but how do you, how do I respond in a crisis? Because what's going to happen in Daniel 2,

  85. from the outside looking in, is God is going to create an impossible situation. And that is how I

  86. would define a crisis. A crisis is more than a bad day. When you're stuck in a crisis, you're stuck in

  87. that crisis because looking around, it looks like what you've gotten yourself into, what I've gotten

  88. myself into, what others have gotten me into, however we want to look at that, is impossible to

  89. get out of. So God in Daniel 2 creates an impossible situation, but God does so with a plan to reveal his

  90. greatness. It's going to take two weeks to go through Daniel 2. And so we're going to see how God creates,

  91. and the next week we're going to come back and see the fullness of this and see why crisis, what is God

  92. doing? Well, for the positive and negative, if you've walked through a crisis before, a crisis in your

  93. marriage, a crisis in your finances, a crisis in your personal life, a crisis in your health, right?

  94. What a crisis is going to do in your life and mine is create desperation. A crisis will create

  95. desperation. And I'm going to give you the end of the story a little bit for us this morning. As

  96. people of God, what God can work and how God can move in a crisis is create within us a greater heart

  97. for him. A greater heart for him. That when men and women of God understand and place themselves in the

  98. resolve of obedience and commitment to the Lord, and then the difficulties of this world come to pass,

  99. and we find ourselves in crisis, right? We can, in that moment, choose not the ways of the world,

  100. but to trust in the holy and sovereign God who, by the palm of his hand, not only holds us, but places us

  101. right where we find ourselves. That's the whole point of Daniel 1. Daniel 1 verse 2, God places

    Daniel 1:2

  102. Daniel and his people in captivity of Babylon. And in that, Daniel resolves to obey the Lord.

  103. And now we see a greater crisis will come to fruition. So let's start reading in chapter 2 verse 1. We're

  104. going to read 1 through verse 13 to start off with. In the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar,

  105. Nebuchadnezzar had dreams. His spirit was troubled and his sleep left him. Then the king, if you weren't here

  106. with us, Nebuchadnezzar is the king, then the king commanded that all the magicians and enchanters,

  107. the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans be summoned to tell the king his dreams. So they came in and stood

  108. before him. And the king said to them, I had a dream and my spirit is troubled to know the dream.

  109. Then the Chaldeans said to the king in Aramaic, O king, live forever. Tell your servants the dream

  110. and we will show the interpretation. The king answered and said to the Chaldeans, the word for me is firm.

  111. If you do not make known to me the dream and its interpretation, you shall be torn limb from

  112. limb and your houses shall be laid in ruins. No pressure, guys. But that's got to be like a bad

  113. job description day, you know. But if you show the dream and its interpretation, you shall receive

  114. from me the gifts and rewards and great honor. Show me the dream and its interpretation.

  115. They answered a second time and said, let the king tell his servants the dream

  116. and we will show you its interpretation. And the king answered and said, I know with certainty that

  117. you are trying to gain time because you see that the word for me is firm. If you do not make the dream

  118. known to me, there is but one sentence for you. You have agreed to speak lying and corrupt words

  119. before me till the times change. Therefore, tell me the dream and I shall know that you can show me its

  120. interpretation. The Chaldeans answered the king and said, there is not a man on earth who can meet the

  121. king's demands. For no great and powerful king has asked such a thing of any magician or enchanter

  122. or Chaldean. The thing that the king asks is difficult and no one can show it to the king

  123. except the gods whose dwelling is not with flesh. Because of this, the king was angry and very furious

  124. and commanded that all the wise men of Babylon be destroyed. So the decree went out and the wise men

  125. were about to be killed. And they sought Daniel and his companions to kill them.

  126. Kind of tough story, right?

  127. A tough story, an impossible situation,

  128. and what we see is a crisis.

  129. We see it as a crisis.

  130. And these 13 verses,

  131. what we see in Daniel is the desperation of the world and the desperation of Nebuchadnezzar.

  132. And I'll show you here in just a moment

  133. how oftentimes when you and I respond in a crisis in the way of the world, not in the way of God,

  134. that we actually respond very similar to the means of Nebuchadnezzar.

  135. That seems a little harsh, but we do. We do. So here's what's going on. Let me kind of explain a little bit

  136. because there's some weird things that aren't common in our times. Let me explain kind of what's

  137. what's happening here. So Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, and he has dreams is what the Bible tells us.

  138. Dreams, multiple dreams. We don't know if this is over several days. We don't know if this is dreams in one night,

  139. but enough to say that he's had dreams. And it's so terrifying to him. I mean, this is a grown man.

  140. This is a grown man that leads men off to war. This is a grown man who executes people.

  141. Like he doesn't have a problem with that. But this dream is so terrifying to him.

  142. This dream has so rocked him to his core. This crisis that he finds himself in has so tormented him

  143. that he can't sleep. You ever been in a crisis before? And what robs you at night is your sleep?

  144. And this is where Nebuchadnezzar finds himself. So he calls to the highest spiritual, intellectual

  145. leaders of Babylon. We see all the fancy names and what we know is these are the pagan wisdom

  146. leaders. And he wants them to come to him and tell him what his dream was and to interpret

  147. the dream. So he's asking for two different things in this scenario. Tell me my dream. Tell me the

  148. interpretation. Now dreams are common in the Bible, right? We see these. Interpretation is common in the

  149. Bible. Daniel, we'll talk about this in a little bit later, Daniel has been given the gift by God to

  150. interpret dreams and visions. So we see this. So this is a common practice. I've had this dream. Come

  151. tell me what it means. We saw this in the life of Joseph at the end of Genesis with Pharaoh, right?

  152. When we were working through Genesis through that time period. And so the Pharaoh comes, he summons

  153. the intellectual pagan leaders, tell me my dream and tell me the interpretation. Now,

  154. why is he having to ask them what the dream was? Theologians differ on why they think that, well,

  155. what's happened here in this moment. And so I want to share with you what most people think. And then

  156. as usual, I've got to be the oddball. So I'm gonna tell you what I think is going on right here. So

  157. here's what's one things or several thoughts on this is that he actually could not remember the dream.

  158. He could not remember the dream. He ever like, I was reading about dreams and like you and I are

  159. constantly dreaming. We're dreaming all the time. The difference is that you don't remember all the

  160. dreams that you dream. I don't remember all the dreams that I've dreamed, right? If we would, it would

  161. be an endless nonstop. So one theory is that he simply couldn't remember the dream, but that he woke

  162. up so terrified by the dream, right? I think there's some legitimacy to that. The second was that he's

  163. testing them. And there's some language that's used, I think around verse 12, where basically he's

  164. saying, like, I want to see if you're lying to me. He's testing them to see if they will tell him

  165. the truth. One theologian that I read talking about this was talking about the ways and practices of the

  166. ungodly, and they use Nebuchadnezzar as proof that, like, even the ungodly don't believe in what

  167. they're saying is even true. Because Nebuchadnezzar is like, I want you, I want to, I believe that you've

  168. been lying to me and I want to see if you're lying to me again. So tell me what my dream is. He's

  169. testing them. The third, and this is what I believe, that a pagan man in the ways of the world that we're

  170. going to see is given a dream from God. He's given a dream from God. And that a pagan mind

  171. cannot comprehend the ways of God. An enlightened heart

  172. can't comprehend grace. And I believe what's happened here is he's so confused

  173. confused. By what he's seen. He's so confused by the events in his dream that he couldn't put them

  174. into words. That the message of God is so foreign to him that his mind is baffled. And he can't even

  175. describe what was there. Either way, tell me what my dream was and then interpret my dream.

  176. Now, these group of leaders that are, that are there, interpretation of dreams is, is what they're

  177. good at. In fact, the Babylonians, I did a little historical dive on them this week. And I want to

  178. share with you what the Babylonians believe about dreams. And we know all that I'm going to tell you

  179. from what they believe about dreams through archaeology and archaeologists have proven that, that this

  180. existed in the time of the Babylonians. It's, it's pretty cool when, when, when modern day archaeology

  181. reinforces what the Bible has already told us is true. And we see that there's never, by the way,

  182. side note, there's never been an archaeological dig that has ever disproven anything in the Bible.

  183. The only thing it's ever done is confirm what the Bible says. So here's what the Babylonians

  184. believed. They believed that dreams followed a certain law or a system. They believed that dreams were like

  185. mathematical equations. And if you track these dreams, if you track these equations in the, and, and the lives

  186. of those who dream these dreams, then what you could find are patterns. And when you could identify the

  187. patterns, then you could interpret the dream. So if you had a dream about eating ice cream, and then three

  188. days later you found $50, and then they find out that there's five other people that dreamed about

  189. ice cream, and then five days later were given money, then they would say dreaming about ice cream is

  190. means that you're going to get more money, right? This is a very simplistic way that they would do this,

  191. right? So they would record all of these and create, honestly, like, like a database.

  192. So that when they experienced, when they heard the information about the dreams, they could go

  193. and write down what's there. So do you see the tension that we find in this moment? Like, King, we can't tell

  194. you the interpretation. We can't tell you what we've figured out as individuals about dreams because you

  195. can't tell us what the dream is.

  196. And so the king says, "Fine. If you can't do it, the whole system is broken. He's terrified. He's without sleep. Worry is on his mind." And he says, "If you can't do it, that's fine. No problem."

  197. "I'll just kill you." I would start thinking up some dreams. Like, that would just be, "Well, so were you in a park." Like, we just start going from this, right? But here's what they do. It says that the Chaldeans answered the king...I just listened to the power of these words in verse 10 and 11. This is vulnerability from these men.

  198. There is not a man on earth who can meet the king's demand. Oh, but there is. For no great and powerful king has asked such a thing of any magician or enchanter or Chaldean. Like, look, no one can meet your expectation. And no king has ever expected this. The thing that the king asks is difficult. And no king has ever expected this. The thing that the king asks is difficult. And no king has ever expected this.

  199. The thing that the king has ever expected this. The thing that the king asks is difficult. No one can show it to the king. They kind of get it right, but they really get it wrong. Except gods. No one, king. No one can do what you're asking to be done unless a supernatural power intercedes.

  200. Intercedes. It's impossible. So what does Nebuchadnezzar do? He doesn't say, you know what? Reason is going to win out in this moment. Right? This is a little irrational of me. Sorry, guys. Bad day. You know? It's just been tough. Get me some melatonin. We'll see if I can work through this lack of sleep. Right? He doesn't do that.

  201. He orders the death of all of the wise men. Now, this is important. Right?

  202. If you remember back from chapter 1, Daniel and Hananiah and Mishael and Azariah have already come before the king at this time.

  203. And they've been chosen above all of their peers, above all of those in the land.

  204. And so they fall into this group of wise men.

  205. Now, they have not elevated themselves.

  206. We'll see here in just a moment.

  207. They're not part of the group that gets called immediately before Nebuchadnezzar.

  208. But when Nebuchadnezzar orders the execution of the wise men,

  209. these four boys are a part of the group that is going to be executed.

  210. Nebuchadnezzar is desperate and he's in a crisis.

  211. And like I said, all too often, we, you and I, have operated in the exact same ungodly manner in a crisis.

  212. What does he do?

  213. Number one, he operates out of fear.

  214. He operates out of fear.

  215. Let me ask you a question.

  216. Have you ever been in a crisis and panic?

  217. Use the expression like, oh, I'll just run around like a chicken with his head cut off.

  218. I'm so afraid everything that is good and wise and logical in the moment flies out and fear overtakes me.

  219. That's what Nebuchadnezzar did.

  220. He operates in worry.

  221. In worry.

  222. When we move from fear to worry, we move from panic to anxiety.

  223. In the moment of the crisis, what does it lead?

  224. What does it immediately lead to?

  225. I can't sleep.

  226. I can't sleep.

  227. My mind's racing.

  228. I'm thinking of the worst possible scenarios.

  229. I'm focusing on this.

  230. I'm focusing on this.

  231. I'm focusing on this.

  232. I'm focusing on this.

  233. Anxiety takes over.

  234. Jesus tells us, do not be anxious.

  235. Trust in God.

  236. We see here that what does he do?

  237. He seeks the counsel of the world.

  238. Not the wisdom of God.

  239. Have you ever, in a crisis, pulled out the proverbial phone a friend, and immediate in your fear and worry, in your panic and your anxiety, not who are the wisest, not who are the godliest, but who are the people right now that can tell me what I want to hear?

  240. He's irrational.

  241. He's irrational.

  242. He gets in his own head.

  243. If you notice, here's how these men show up.

  244. They show up.

  245. Oh, king, live forever.

  246. These men show up.

  247. We love you.

  248. We worship you.

  249. We want nothing but the best for you.

  250. It is our life to make sure that you live forever.

  251. But Nebuchadnezzar's in his own head.

  252. It's a ping-pong match that he's losing over and over and over again.

  253. He's impatient in a crisis.

  254. I know that I can become a right now, not later kind of guy.

  255. He becomes impatient.

  256. Tell me what I want now.

  257. The wise men say, could you give us some time?

  258. Now.

  259. How about a minute?

  260. Now.

  261. He begins to experience misplaced emotion.

  262. What do I mean by that?

  263. He blames others.

  264. You are the reason that I am where I am.

  265. If you could just tell me what this dream means, then I would not find myself in this predicament.

  266. But that's not what we.

  267. He blames others instead of looking for himself.

  268. Anger begins to be the emotion that rises to the top.

  269. All pursuits of calmness and joy and happiness that could be there or gone.

  270. And in his crisis, if this is going to take me out, who can I take out with me?

  271. Now, I hope in your moment of crisis, you've never ordered the death of over a hundred people, right?

  272. But, if we're being honest before the Lord, if we take out the what he did, but how he was in his heart, we see that you and I can oftentimes respond in the exact same way.

  273. And respond to a crisis in the ways of the world.

  274. We respond through fear, worry, counsel of the world, irrational thinking.

  275. We're impatient with the timeline.

  276. We have misplaced emotion.

  277. We experience high levels of anger and destruction that come along with that.

  278. Is that how you handle crisis?

  279. Between you and the Holy Spirit and what God's doing, is this who you are?

  280. Financial crisis, relational crisis, family crisis, personal crisis, crisis.

  281. Or, or, do we respond as we're going to see Daniel responds?

  282. We're going to read verses 14 through 24.

  283. Then Daniel replied with prudence and discretion to Ariok, the captain of the king's guard,

  284. who had gone out to kill the wise men of Babylon.

  285. He declared to Ariok, the king's captain,

  286. why is the decree of the king so urgent?

  287. Then Ariok made the matter known to Daniel.

  288. And Daniel went in and requested the king to appoint a time

  289. that he might show the interpretation to the king.

  290. Then Daniel went to his house and made the matter known

  291. to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions,

  292. and told them to seek mercy from God,

  293. from the God of heaven concerning this mystery,

  294. so that Daniel and his companions

  295. might not be destroyed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.

  296. Then the mystery was revealed to Daniel in the vision of the night.

  297. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven.

  298. Daniel answered and said,

  299. blessed be the name of God forever and ever,

  300. to whom belong wisdom and might.

  301. He changes times and seasons.

  302. He removes kings and sets up kings.

  303. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding.

  304. He reveals deep and hidden things.

  305. He knows what is in the darkness,

  306. and the light dwells with him.

  307. To you, O God of my fathers,

  308. I give thanks and praise.

  309. For you have given me wisdom and might,

  310. and have now made known to me what we asked of you.

  311. For you have made known to us the king's matter.

  312. Therefore, Daniel went in to Ariok,

  313. whom the king had appointed to destroy the wise men of Babylon.

  314. He went and said thus to him,

  315. do not destroy the wise men of Babylon.

  316. Bring me in before the king,

  317. and I will show the king the interpretation.

  318. So let's talk about the desperation of Daniel.

  319. Remember, this is the end of the story for today.

  320. And Daniel's desperation is going to drive him not to the world,

  321. but to the resolve and the commitment that he has with God.

  322. And all that Daniel is going to seek and do

  323. is going to come in Daniel's commitment to the Lord.

  324. Now here's what's remarkable about this.

  325. Some of us think that proper response to God

  326. will come without proper training for a time and place

  327. that the response is required.

  328. It's like a person showing up to a marathon,

  329. and on the way there,

  330. they bought the first pair of running shoes they've ever had.

  331. They've never jogged for a moment,

  332. but now they're going to run a marathon.

  333. Daniel, from what we see,

  334. is a young man who his whole life has been dedicating himself

  335. with the difficult, hard obedience to the Lord.

  336. Not when it's easy.

  337. Not when it's easy.

  338. Not when it's convenient.

  339. Not when everyone else is doing it.

  340. But in fact, when it's hard, when it's difficult,

  341. and no one else is doing it,

  342. Daniel resolves, I'm going to trust in God.

  343. And God, in Daniel's life, has worked and moved in miraculous ways

  344. so Danic doesn't have to hit the panic button

  345. when this moment of crisis comes,

  346. because he's been in crisis before.

  347. He knows who God is, and he knows what God's going to do.

  348. That's not Daniel trying to control God.

  349. That's a depth of intimate relationship with God

  350. where Daniel knows God.

  351. And Daniel presses into that.

  352. He holds on to that.

  353. He clings to who he knows God to be.

  354. Sometimes in your life, crisis will rock your world

  355. from everything that you've known and experienced before

  356. and bring you to God.

  357. And I praise God for that.

  358. But so many times in your life and my life,

  359. what happens with crisis when we respond in the ways of the world,

  360. even though the ways of the world don't ever work,

  361. we keep going back to the ways of the world

  362. because we've never clung to God to begin with.

  363. But Daniel had resolved.

  364. This is the commitment.

  365. This is the character.

  366. This is the man of God who he is.

  367. This is evidence of the fruit of God working in Daniel.

  368. And the desperation of Daniel is a desperation for God.

  369. Remember back to chapter one, verse 17,

  370. all the way back from three years before.

  371. And as for these four youths,

  372. God gave them learning and skill

  373. and all literature and wisdom.

  374. And Daniel had understanding

  375. in all visions and dreams.

  376. So Daniel knew,

  377. this is what God's given me.

  378. And not in cockiness,

  379. but in confidence of God,

  380. Daniel knew

  381. that he was the man

  382. for the season

  383. of what God

  384. had chosen him for.

  385. Now,

  386. to the best of my knowledge,

  387. a death sentence

  388. has never been executed

  389. like for me, right?

  390. Like,

  391. I've never gotten that letter in the mail.

  392. But,

  393. Daniel does.

  394. And what we see,

  395. we're going to look at these

  396. characteristics of Daniel

  397. about how Daniel responds.

  398. The first way that Daniel responds

  399. is Daniel responds in composure.

  400. Composure.

  401. Listen,

  402. like,

  403. he never loses his cool.

  404. The Bible tells us that

  405. he finds this out

  406. and he replied

  407. with prudence

  408. and discretion.

  409. He's not out there like,

  410. hey, here I am.

  411. He's like,

  412. listen,

  413. like,

  414. I'm composed,

  415. I'm calm,

  416. I'm cool,

  417. I'm under control.

  418. He goes

  419. to the executioner.

  420. And says,

  421. hey,

  422. question,

  423. why is this happening

  424. so quickly?

  425. I don't know about you,

  426. but like,

  427. if the executioner

  428. is showing up

  429. to cut my body

  430. into different pieces

  431. and then destroy

  432. everything that I own,

  433. unless there's a mighty work

  434. of the power of God,

  435. I'm not seeking

  436. the executioner out.

  437. And when I do,

  438. it's like,

  439. hey buddy,

  440. five minute head start,

  441. like,

  442. can I get that?

  443. Like,

  444. let's see who's quicker today.

  445. You know what I mean?

  446. But that's not Daniel.

  447. He comes and he's like,

  448. why is this happening

  449. so quickly?

  450. Because he's trusting God.

  451. He's trying to get a grasp

  452. and an understanding

  453. of the situation.

  454. Daniel's trying to understand

  455. the crisis around him

  456. so that he can see

  457. where to move

  458. as they go forward.

  459. Number two,

  460. in a crisis,

  461. Daniel is patient.

  462. Daniel is patient.

  463. It's amazing

  464. what he asks for

  465. is time.

  466. Daniel asks for time.

  467. Could you give me

  468. some time

  469. to see if I can

  470. figure out

  471. what's going on?

  472. You know,

  473. that's the second time

  474. that Daniel's asked for that.

  475. That's the second time

  476. in the midst of crisis

  477. when we look back

  478. and we see

  479. Daniel's faithfulness

  480. in chapter one

  481. with the chief eunuchs

  482. and he asked him

  483. not to defile himself

  484. that he did not want

  485. to eat of the king's food.

  486. Daniel said,

  487. can you give me,

  488. I believe it was ten days,

  489. can you just give me

  490. some time?

  491. He's patient.

  492. He's composed.

  493. He's patient.

  494. And then he's courageous.

  495. Like if you're like,

  496. well, this is leading

  497. to courageous,

  498. but let me tell you

  499. about the level

  500. of courageous

  501. that Daniel says.

  502. Daniel says,

  503. give me some time

  504. and take me to the king.

  505. Take me to the king.

  506. Right?

  507. Like that illogical king

  508. that's trying

  509. to kill everyone.

  510. In my composed,

  511. give me some time

  512. and take me to the king.

  513. Take me to the king.

  514. Daniel is a man of action.

  515. Daniel is a godly man

  516. of action.

  517. I think sometimes

  518. when we feel like

  519. trusting in the plan of God

  520. means we sit there

  521. like a bump on the log.

  522. That's not what we find

  523. from Daniel.

  524. But Daniel

  525. in his godliness

  526. is a man of patience,

  527. is a man of courage,

  528. and is a man of composure.

  529. Church,

  530. what are you in a crisis?

  531. Do you add panic

  532. to the room

  533. or do you calm

  534. the room down?

  535. Are you a person

  536. of patience

  537. or are you a person

  538. irrational right now?

  539. Are you a person

  540. of fear

  541. or are you

  542. a person

  543. of courage?

  544. That's not Daniel.

  545. Daniel's a man

  546. of action.

  547. But he's a man

  548. of action before God.

  549. So he goes

  550. to his house

  551. and I imagine

  552. this is probably

  553. one of the most

  554. awkward conversations

  555. he's ever had.

  556. He calls Hananiah,

  557. Mishael,

  558. Azariah,

  559. tells them what's happening.

  560. He's like,

  561. guys,

  562. guess what?

  563. There's a death issue

  564. for us.

  565. Don't worry.

  566. Here's what we're

  567. going to do.

  568. Let's pack a bag

  569. and boogie,

  570. right?

  571. Like they can't

  572. catch up with us.

  573. No,

  574. no.

  575. What does he say?

  576. What does he say?

  577. He says,

  578. let's pray.

  579. Let's pray.

  580. 17 years old.

  581. 17 years old.

  582. Let's pray.

  583. What would you do?

  584. What have I done?

  585. What does Daniel do?

  586. Daniel says,

  587. let's pray.

  588. So they pray

  589. and they ask God

  590. and they ask God

  591. specifically

  592. that God would reveal

  593. the dream to them.

  594. Here's what they know.

  595. Daniel knows

  596. that he's got

  597. all the giftedness

  598. in the world

  599. to interpret the dream.

  600. Daniel has confidence

  601. in the gifting

  602. that God has given him.

  603. But Daniel still realizes

  604. that in order for Daniel

  605. to use his gift,

  606. he needs to be desperate

  607. for the hand of God

  608. to work.

  609. Daniel knows

  610. this is not done

  611. on his own ability,

  612. on his own wisdom,

  613. on his own insight.

  614. Daniel is desperate

  615. for the hand of God

  616. to work.

  617. Read this week

  618. about this passage

  619. of scripture.

  620. Christ has brought Daniel

  621. to his knees,

  622. not to the drawing board.

  623. He trusts.

  624. What does Daniel do then?

  625. They have their prayer meeting,

  626. they have their prayer time,

  627. they're on their knees,

  628. they're calling out,

  629. they're crying out,

  630. they're praying,

  631. they get done.

  632. Daniel says,

  633. all right,

  634. I'm going to bed.

  635. I'm going to bed.

  636. It's going to be

  637. a busy day tomorrow.

  638. I need to get some sleep.

  639. I mean,

  640. before the king.

  641. Well, Daniel,

  642. what is the dream?

  643. I don't know.

  644. I don't know.

  645. I got to go to sleep.

  646. Well,

  647. don't we need

  648. to figure the dream out?

  649. Don't we need

  650. to figure the dream out?

  651. We're trusting God.

  652. We've handed over to God

  653. and I'm so confident

  654. in the hand of God

  655. that while the king

  656. can't sleep

  657. because of a dream,

  658. I'm sleeping like a baby

  659. whose belly is full

  660. because I'm trusting God

  661. that God's going to work,

  662. that God's going to move

  663. with what God's going to do.

  664. This is who Daniel is

  665. in his relationship with God.

  666. Folks,

  667. that's trust.

  668. It's Jesus asleep

  669. in the bottom of the boat

  670. while everyone panics.

  671. And the beauty of this

  672. is Daniel is not God.

  673. Daniel is a man of God.

  674. And if God can give Daniel

  675. this amount of trust

  676. in what God's going to do,

  677. then God can give you and me

  678. the same amount of trust

  679. in Christ

  680. that doesn't compel

  681. in comparison to this,

  682. that we can trust God.

  683. In cancer,

  684. you can trust God.

  685. In financial loss,

  686. you can trust God.

  687. In death,

  688. you can trust God.

  689. In everything,

  690. you can trust God.

  691. That's what Daniel does.

  692. And then God

  693. answers Daniel.

  694. He answers Daniel.

  695. What does Daniel do?

  696. He praises him.

  697. He praises him.

  698. He doesn't wake up and go,

  699. whew.

  700. He doesn't wake up,

  701. let me get this written down.

  702. He doesn't wake up

  703. and call everyone.

  704. He doesn't begin to figure out

  705. how he can leverage this.

  706. Now, how can I be the leader?

  707. How can I get rid of

  708. all these other people?

  709. Daniel praises God.

  710. It's the verses that we read.

  711. It's verses 20 through 23.

  712. We don't have time this morning.

  713. I recommend that you go

  714. spend some time in this.

  715. Make this your quiet time this week.

  716. It's a song that Daniel writes,

  717. blessed be the name of God

  718. forever and ever

  719. to whom belong wisdom and might.

  720. And then he continues on.

  721. In a verse that I think

  722. is very interesting,

  723. a piece of this.

  724. Remember the king,

  725. what does he want to do?

  726. He wants to kill.

  727. What does Daniel want?

  728. Daniel wants compassion.

  729. Not just for himself.

  730. Not just for himself.

  731. Daniel goes to Ariok

  732. who's on his way

  733. to begin to start executing

  734. the pagan sorcerers

  735. and enchanters

  736. and Chaldeans

  737. and he's like,

  738. don't do that.

  739. Stop.

  740. Because I,

  741. God has given me

  742. I know the dream.

  743. And then in confidence,

  744. in confidence,

  745. Daniel says,

  746. take me to the king.

  747. Take me to the king.

  748. 17-year-old boy

  749. who's been threatened

  750. to have his head,

  751. his arms,

  752. his legs

  753. cut from his body,

  754. scattered over the city.

  755. If some of you

  756. have a different translation

  757. than the translation

  758. that I used this morning,

  759. it's not just that

  760. his house will be made a ruin,

  761. but literally his house

  762. will be made a dung pile.

  763. They'll bring

  764. their and their animals' feces

  765. to the ruin of his house.

  766. They will destroy

  767. all that he is.

  768. And in confidence,

  769. in God,

  770. Daniel,

  771. a man in the crisis,

  772. a godly man in the crisis,

  773. just take me to the king.

  774. Take me to the king.

  775. When you go through

  776. a crisis,

  777. how do you respond?

  778. Do you respond

  779. in fear?

  780. Do you respond

  781. in worry?

  782. In the counsel

  783. of the wicked,

  784. irrational,

  785. impatient,

  786. misplaced emotion,

  787. anger,

  788. and destruction?

  789. Do you respond

  790. like Nebuchadnezzar?

  791. Is today a day

  792. for you

  793. that as in a moment

  794. when the band comes up

  795. and we go into

  796. time of response,

  797. do you need to hit

  798. your knees

  799. before God?

  800. Do you need to bow

  801. your head before God

  802. and repent

  803. for all of the times

  804. that you've had

  805. the faith of Nebuchadnezzar?

  806. or do you respond

  807. like Daniel?

  808. As Daniel

  809. is desperate

  810. for the Lord,

  811. what comes from Daniel

  812. is composure,

  813. patience,

  814. courage,

  815. prayer,

  816. trust,

  817. praise,

  818. compassion,

  819. and confidence.

  820. Do you resolve

  821. God,

  822. you are holy.

  823. God,

  824. you are good.

  825. God,

  826. you have placed me here

  827. for a time like this

  828. and my resolve

  829. is in you.

  830. The Bible tells us

  831. that God has chosen you

  832. as a follower of Christ

  833. for a time of crisis.

  834. Over and over and over again,

  835. the Bible talks about

  836. the persecution

  837. and the difficulties

  838. and the trials

  839. that we'll face here

  840. on this earth.

  841. God has chosen you

  842. and God has placed you

  843. in a culture

  844. that is counter

  845. to the ways of God.

  846. It's not normal.

  847. We talked about this last week.

  848. We looked at all the statistics.

  849. We may say

  850. that we live

  851. in a Christian country,

  852. but we do not live

  853. in a Christian culture.

  854. And do you and I

  855. have the resolve

  856. to be

  857. the men

  858. and women

  859. of God,

  860. which means

  861. we're counter

  862. culture

  863. because God

  864. has chosen you

  865. for a crisis

  866. of today.

  867. Why Daniel?

  868. Why a

  869. 13-year-old boy

  870. would be taken

  871. from his family,

  872. from his homeland,

  873. from the language,

  874. from a culture?

  875. That was messed up.

  876. I mean,

  877. the people had messed it up,

  878. but it was home.

  879. Why take him

  880. to three years later

  881. have him face

  882. a death sentence?

  883. Why would God do that?

  884. Because God trusted

  885. the character

  886. in the person

  887. of who Daniel

  888. was in him.

  889. The question

  890. that I asked you

  891. as we got started,

  892. scroll back up

  893. to the top

  894. of my notes.

  895. How do you

  896. respond in a crisis?

  897. How do you

  898. respond in a crisis?

  899. The question

  900. I leave you with

  901. is,

  902. can God

  903. trust you

  904. in a crisis?

  905. Can God

  906. trust you

  907. in a crisis?

  908. Can God

  909. trust you

  910. to be

  911. as Daniel?

  912. Or will you

  913. fall

  914. and I fall

  915. into the path

  916. of Nebuchadnezzar?

  917. Would you pray

  918. with me?

  919. God,

  920. we thank you

  921. for your word.

  922. God,

  923. as we live

  924. as a people

  925. in a culture

  926. that is

  927. counter

  928. and rebellious.

  929. Lord,

  930. for your will

  931. and your ways.

  932. God,

  933. I pray

  934. that we

  935. would be

  936. people of faith

  937. who shine

  938. the light

  939. of the gospel

  940. of Jesus Christ

  941. in the midst

  942. of the brokenness

  943. of this world.

  944. God,

  945. I pray

  946. especially

  947. since that

  948. in a crisis

  949. people look

  950. for leaders.

  951. They look

  952. for men

  953. and women

  954. to step up

  955. and take control.

  956. They look

  957. for those

  958. who are

  959. composed

  960. and confident

  961. and courageous.

  962. They look

  963. for those

  964. worthy

  965. to be followed.

  966. They look

  967. for those

  968. that they

  969. can trust.

  970. God,

  971. I pray

  972. that we

  973. would be

  974. that.

  975. We would

  976. be that

  977. not because

  978. of our own

  979. ability

  980. or our own

  981. wisdom

  982. or our own

  983. way,

  984. but we

  985. would be

  986. that because

  987. of who

  988. we are

  989. in you.

  990. God

  991. remind us

  992. that Daniel

  993. is not

  994. the hero.

  995. Daniel

  996. is the

  997. servant.

  998. God,

  999. you are.

  1000. You're

  1001. the hero.

  1002. God,

  1003. as Daniel

  1004. sings praises,

  1005. it's not

  1006. to his

  1007. intellect,

  1008. it's to

  1009. your wisdom,

  1010. it's to

  1011. your power,

  1012. it's to

  1013. your sovereignty,

  1014. it's to

  1015. your depth,

  1016. it's to

  1017. who you

  1018. are and

  1019. to what

  1020. you've made

  1021. known.

  1022. God,

  1023. I pray

  1024. in that,

  1025. in the

  1026. godliness

  1027. of Daniel,

  1028. God,

  1029. that we

  1030. would be

  1031. more like

  1032. him.

  1033. God,

  1034. that we

  1035. would seek

  1036. and desire

  1037. you more,

  1038. who would

  1039. not be

  1040. consumed

  1041. by the

  1042. chaos

  1043. and the

  1044. way of

  1045. the world

  1046. would be

  1047. resolved.

  1048. In

  1049. Christ,

  1050. we are

  1051. victors.

  1052. In

  1053. Christ,

  1054. we are

  1055. redeemed.

  1056. In

  1057. Christ,

  1058. we are

  1059. saved.

  1060. In

  1061. Christ,

  1062. we are

  1063. chosen.

  1064. In

  1065. Christ,

  1066. we are

  1067. free.

  1068. And

  1069. that,

  1070. Lord,

  1071. even when

  1072. we can't

  1073. understand it,

  1074. we can

  1075. trust you.

  1076. In

  1077. Jesus' name

  1078. we pray.

  1079. Amen.

  1080. That's it

  1081. for this

  1082. week's

  1083. message.

  1084. Be sure

  1085. to check

  1086. back next

  1087. week for

  1088. a new
