  4. Good morning. If you have your Bibles, and I hope you do, I want to invite you to join us in Matthew

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  5. chapter 3. Echo a couple of things that Pastor Dave said. For our first-time guest, thank you

  6. again for being here at the end of the service. My wife Erin and I will be back here at our

  7. connections table. We'd love for you to stop by for just a moment. We would love to meet you,

  8. introduce ourselves to you. We'd love to be able to learn your name. And then by chance, if you have

  9. any questions about who we are as a church, about any of our ministries, we'd like to have the

  10. opportunity to answer those questions for you. So please stop by. Also, at the very end of the

  11. service, where's mine at? Right here. We'll be partaking in the Lord's Supper together. So if

  12. you're a follower of Jesus Christ, whether you're a member of this church or not, and you would like

  13. to participate in partaking of the Lord's Supper, we would invite you to. And if you did not get

  14. your elements as you came in, they are right back here. And at any point in time, you can slide back

  15. there and then grab those. I do want to echo what Pastor Dave said about our soup and chili

  16. night next Sunday at five o'clock. We would love for you to be there. We'd love for you to be a part

  17. of it. It's one of my favorite nights that we can gather together as a church family. There's not any

  18. programming. It's just an opportunity for us to sit down, fellowship, sit around a table together. And

  19. we got a lot of new faces around here. And so that for you, for the new faces, it's a great opportunity

  20. for you to come in and meet some of those of us that have been around here for a while. And if

  21. you've been around here for a while, it's a good opportunity for you to come and to meet some of

  22. the new people and interact and fellowship and have that. So make sure that you come back next Sunday

  23. night. And then our discipleship studies, you know, we're, we're in that new year. We're in that new

  24. time. Like we've all got, uh, we're either going to eat better. We're going to exercise more. We're

  25. going to save more. You know, we're going to spend less. We're all setting our goals for the new year.

  26. We need to do that. And I would argue that that one of the greatest goals that you can not only set

  27. for you, but for your family is involvement and engagement in discipleship. Families making sure

  28. that you've got your kids here for discipleship, for the youth, for their discipleship, but also for us

  29. parents that we can come together. And whether it be a part of a small group, a women's group,

  30. a men's group, any type of study that we do outside, uh, outside of the campus or the ones that we do

  31. on here in the discipleship studies, we want to encourage you to do that. There's a lot of wonderful

  32. ones that we've got lined up for this next quarter. Uh, we've got one for moms. We've got one for,

  33. uh, for men. So ladies and men's, we've got walking through the new Testament, uh, every thought held

  34. captive will be led by Tawana and Brent. Um, but also, um, Aaron and I are leading one. And I'll be

  35. honest with you. Uh, we feel a little bit, um, intimidated by, by leading this one. Um, so the first

  36. message that I ever preached, I was 24 years old, uh, Donald Pope, who was the pastor at Town Creek

  37. Baptist Church where I served at the youth pastor. He said, I want you to preach next Sunday and I want

  38. you to preach on parenting. It's like, okay, I didn't have kids. Right. And so I walked up feeling

  39. very inadequate with talking about this. Right. Um, and Aaron and I, uh, felt, felt led this past

  40. spring break. We were off, we were camping and we were reading through and you guys know Emma and

  41. Grace and her seniors in high school this year. And, and we're talking through college stuff as their

  42. junior year last year and looking forward and kind of coming to the realization that, you know,

  43. they're, they're, they're entering into like that adult phase. And we begin to talk about, you know,

  44. like each stage of life, you parent a little bit different than you had before. And so, um, uh,

  45. Aaron was, was reading a blog, I think at the time or an article online. And it was about a couple of

  46. different books. And one of them was this book, doing life with your adult children by Jim Burns.

  47. And we read through some of the aspects of that. And here's what I say. If you are a parent of a child

  48. who is an adult, and I'll say like looking through this, I don't think it really matters what age of

  49. adult they're at, whether it's 18 years old or, or, or anywhere above that. Right. And, and you're

  50. wanting to grow as a parent with them and grow as a parent with us as we walk through this. I want to

  51. encourage you to sign up and be a part of that. I will say we are coming to facilitate a discussion

  52. by no means. Do we feel like, uh, we have perfected this as our kids haven't even made it to 18 years

  53. old, but, but a lot of wonderful opportunities, uh, for you guys to get connected. I guarantee you,

  54. there is absolutely something for everyone that we have through small groups, through our studies,

  55. and would love for you, uh, to be a part of that. But I'm excited as we get into Matthew chapter three,

  56. as we continue on in that. And so I want to read to you from this morning's passage, Matthew three,

  57. when we read verses 16 and 17, before we go into our time of prayer, it says,

  58. and when Jesus was baptized immediately, he went up from the water and behold, the heavens were open to

  59. him. And he saw the spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him. And behold, a voice

  60. from heaven said, this is my beloved son with who I am well pleased. Would you pray with me?

  61. God, we thank you for the beauty and the perfection of your word. God, as we come to it this morning,

  62. Lord, would you speak fresh to us? God, would you communicate to us and would our minds and our ears

  63. and our hearts be receptive to your message? God, if any part of this is, is of me, by me, or for me,

  64. Lord, may you remove it and may it all be of you and by you and for you, for your name and your glory.

  65. And it's in Jesus' name we pray. Amen. We started our Christmas series this past month, the first

  66. Sunday in December, and Josh opened up our Christmas series by preaching in Matthew chapter one,

  67. starting in verse 18. And so we were looking at where we're going to go. I was like, let's just stay

  68. in Matthew and keep journeying through there through 2026. Now, Matthew starts his gospel through an

  69. interesting narrative. And it's one that, as we've talked through it in December, we've mentioned it,

  70. but we haven't really focused in on it. And I want us, as we go through this, to kind of focus in on this

  71. aspect of Matthew, because it'll help us understand how Matthew flows through the life of Jesus of what

  72. we're going to see. And, and this is that Matthew is going to continually point to the kingship of

  73. Jesus, that Jesus is King and the kingdom of Jesus that we are called to be a part of both the King

  74. Jesus and the kingdom that he is over. So as we read through, as, as we piece through, we see what it

  75. looks like for Jesus to be King. And then what it looks like for you and I to be a part of his kingdom.

  76. Now, when you look in Matthew chapter one, you can see this in the lineage of Jesus. It is through

  77. King David. Matthew 1, 1 starts off by talking about Jesus, the Christ from the son of David,

  78. the son of Abraham. Abraham came before David. So why is David first? Because he's the king. And we see

  79. Jesus in the lineage of King David. The angel appears to Joseph and Joseph is the descendant of King

  80. David. Jesus was born in Bethlehem, the town of the kings from King David. So we see very early on

  81. in Matthew chapter one, this emphasis that Matthew is going to give that Jesus is King. Then in Matthew

  82. chapter two, the wise men come and who are they looking for? The King of the Jews. They're looking

  83. for Jesus, the King of the Jews. That's the title that they're looking for. Who feels threatened by the

  84. birth of Jesus? King Herod. Why is he afraid? Because he's afraid that Jesus will come and take his throne.

  85. So from Matthew chapter one, Matthew chapter two, what we get in the birth of Jesus is this baby

  86. has come and he's King. And he's King. So what's this King going to be like? What's this King going to

  87. come and do? What's it going to look like for the King to call people to him? Well, when we go from

  88. Matthew chapter two to Matthew chapter three, there's about 30 years of time that spans from the end of

  89. chapter two to the beginning of chapter three. So there's a large gap in the life of Jesus that we

  90. miss out on, but what we'll really capture is his three years of earthly ministry all the way until

  91. Matthew 28 until Jesus gives the great commission following the resurrection of Christ. So join with

  92. me. Let's read Matthew chapter three, verses one through six. It says, in those days, John the Baptist

  93. came preaching in the wilderness of Judea. Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. For this is he who

  94. was spoken by the prophet Isaiah when he said, the voice of one crying in the wilderness, prepare the

  95. way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Now John wore a garment of camel's hair and a leather belt

  96. around his waist and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then Jerusalem and all of Judea and the region

  97. about the Jordan were going out to him and they were being baptized by him in the river Jordan

  98. confessing their sins. So let's pause here for just a few minutes. And as we look to Jesus, we're going

  99. to look at this guy known as John the Baptist or maybe better translated John the baptizer. Now when

  100. most people read through or think through Matthew, we think through the birth narrative of Jesus in

  101. Matthew chapter one, and then we can kind of skip over, I know at least in my mind, I can skip over

  102. Matthew chapter three and I can jump and land in Matthew four, right? It's the temptation of Jesus. And we

  103. see Jesus, we'll look at this next week, right? And see Jesus overcoming the temptations of Satan. And then we

  104. come into a very powerful passage in Matthew chapter five, the greatest sermon that's ever been preached, Jesus

  105. in the Sermon on the Mount. But sandwiched right in between there, between the birth of Jesus and the

  106. temptation of Jesus is this interaction by John the Baptist and he's going to have an

  107. interaction with Jesus and what John the Baptist is doing. And this is very important, what John

  108. the Baptist is doing. John the Baptist is serving as a form of Elijah. That God in God's word tells us

  109. that before Jesus comes that there's going to be someone like an Elijah who is there proclaiming and

  110. preparing the way for Jesus to come. And this is what we see. This is why in a lot of ways we see this

  111. difficult or different dress that he's wearing in the practices of his life of being set apart in the

  112. wilderness is he's the prophet who God has chosen to come before Christ to pave the way to proclaim that

  113. Jesus is coming. And so what I want us to do this morning in looking at John the Baptist is to look at

  114. John the Baptist and look at John's method and his message. To look at his method and his message.

  115. Because it's not just important for Jesus coming, but it's important for us even though Jesus has come.

  116. That we look and we understand John's message and John's method. It says there in verse 1,

  117. And those days John the Baptist came preaching. Preaching. Like what I'm doing now. That he came preaching.

  118. But it looks different. It's a little bit different. This word to preach is the word to herald. To herald.

  119. What in the world does that mean? What does it mean to herald something? Well to herald would be a responsibility

  120. or an activity that was given to someone who would then be called a herald. A herald would herald.

  121. And they would go before royalty. Very specifically they would go before a king. So before a king would

  122. come into the palace room or the king would come into the courtroom, the herald would come before him

  123. and announce and declare and to give the titles and to say that the king is coming. But there was also

  124. another aspect of a herald that I think is important for us to know. That is the king would move maybe from

  125. the palace to a town, right? Like sometimes the king would send messengers out there or ambassadors.

  126. And in fact in the New Testament when it says that we're ambassadors of God, that's a royal title.

  127. That we come with the message of God, speaking for God as ambassadors.

  128. But a herald would go from town to town to announce to the people that the king was coming.

  129. So imagine if you got the announcement that coming to your town that the king was going to be there.

  130. Right? That you are hearing that announcement so that you can prepare, so that you can be ready.

  131. So John is saying to the people, make sure that you're ready because the king is coming.

  132. Well, who's the king? The king's coming. You better be ready. You better be ready.

  133. But then the second thing that the herald would do is it says prepare the way or to make the paths

  134. straight. You see, a herald would also not only go forward and announce that the king is coming,

  135. but literally the herald would go on the road that the king's caravan would travel down.

  136. And if a bridge were washed out, the herald would be responsible for getting the crew together to

  137. rebuild the bridge. If there were holes in the road, the herald would be responsible for making sure

  138. that the road was removed of all holes. That literally, that the pathway to the destination

  139. is made clear, is made smooth. So here's what John the Baptist is doing.

  140. He is saying to the people, you need to prepare because the king is coming

  141. and I'm going to prepare the way through the message that I tell you.

  142. You see, John's not going and making the roads smooth for Jesus.

  143. John's preparing the road of the message of the gospel to the hearts of the people who are going to hear it.

  144. And this is what we see from John the baptizer, that he brings a message and he's bringing a method.

  145. So what is his message?

  146. What is his message?

  147. Very simply, his message is repent.

  148. Repent.

  149. Repent.

  150. The king is coming.

  151. Repent.

  152. The king is coming.

  153. Repent.

  154. Matthew 3, verse 2.

    Matthew 3:2

  155. Repent.

  156. For behold, the kingdom of heaven

  157. is at hand.

  158. The kingdom of heaven

  159. is here.

  160. Jesus

  161. himself

  162. and your response

  163. is to repent.

  164. Coming to Jesus

  165. means being willing to deal with your sin.

  166. Dealing with your sin

  167. doesn't mean perfecting yourself.

  168. I think a lot of times what we think coming to Jesus means is

  169. once I've got my life a little bit more in order,

  170. once I've got my life laid out a little bit more the way that it needs to be,

  171. once I've worked through some of these issues in my life,

  172. once I've worked through the work that the Holy Spirit is designed to work in me to do,

  173. but once I've done the work without him,

  174. then I'll be ready to come to Jesus.

  175. The problem is,

  176. you and I can never do the work that we need to do apart from the Holy Spirit to ever come to Jesus.

  177. So what we're called to do

  178. is not figure ourself out,

  179. but what we're called to do

  180. is to repent of the sin that's in our life.

  181. Now,

  182. what does it mean to repent?

  183. What does that mean?

  184. That's a word in church

  185. that we throw out all the time.

  186. Well, you need to repent.

  187. Well, you need to repent.

  188. Well, you need to repent.

  189. You've got sin in your life.

  190. I've got sin in my life.

  191. What do we need to do for the sin that's in our life?

  192. Well, we need to repent.

  193. But what does repentance mean?

  194. When you look biblically at this concept,

  195. this command that God gives us to repent,

  196. the aspects of repentance are actually a threefold part.

  197. That we can actually do things that look like repentance,

  198. but they're not repentance.

  199. They're self-serving when done isolated.

  200. But when we see biblical repentance,

  201. we see the fullness of what God has called us to.

  202. So the first aspect of repentance that we see

  203. in the context of scripture is confessing.

  204. It's confessing.

  205. We need to confess our sin.

  206. So what does that mean?

  207. What does it mean to confess?

  208. And how can we practice that?

  209. So here's what I'm going to do.

  210. I'm going to randomly call on one of you

  211. to come up here

  212. and display confession for us.

  213. All right, y'all ready?

  214. Jack.

  215. Just kidding, buddy.

  216. Just kidding.

  217. That's my daughter's boyfriend.

  218. Just kidding.

  219. Just kidding.

  220. I love you, man.

  221. I love you.

  222. I love you.

  223. I'll pay for that one later by my daughter.

  224. That's not confession.

  225. That's manipulation, folks.

  226. That's what that is.

  227. Confessing our sin is not in an aspect.

  228. Now, there are parts of that, right?

  229. Where we confess our sins to one another

  230. is what James calls us to do.

  231. That we are to do that.

  232. And it's a biblical concept that we have

  233. and it's a beautiful piece of what it looks like

  234. to be in community.

  235. That we can come to one another,

  236. confess our sins,

  237. hold each other accountable,

  238. and there's great healing in that.

  239. But here's the true heart of confession.

  240. The true heart of confession is this,

  241. is I take responsibility for my sin.

  242. I take responsibility for my sin.

  243. It's not my mama's fault.

  244. It's not my daddy's fault.

  245. It's not my wife's fault.

  246. It's not my kid's fault.

  247. It's not my neighbor's fault.

  248. It's not my boss's fault.

  249. It's not your fault.

  250. It's not God's fault.

  251. It's my fault.

  252. Confession is God, I've done this.

  253. And here's the beauty of confession.

  254. God's never surprised when we do it.

  255. He already knew.

  256. He already knew.

  257. He saw it.

  258. He was there.

  259. But it's me taking ownership

  260. in what I've done.

  261. The second is not just confession,

  262. but it's sorrow.

  263. Sorrow.

  264. Being sorrowful for your sin.

  265. You know, we use this statement

  266. when we parent sometimes,

  267. when we're disciplining our kids

  268. and they're sad, right?

  269. Especially when they're little.

  270. Like, are you sorry because you did it?

  271. Or are you sorry because you got caught?

  272. I think sometimes we are sorrowful

  273. because we got caught.

  274. And God says, no, no, no, no, no.

  275. You need to be sorrowful

  276. because of what you've done.

  277. And ultimately, our sin is against Him.

  278. That's why David,

  279. after his encounter with Bathsheba,

  280. comes in confession

  281. and repentance before the Lord

  282. and says,

  283. against you and you alone have I sinned.

  284. Had David sinned against Bathsheba?

  285. Absolutely.

  286. Had David sinned against Uriah?

  287. Absolutely.

  288. Had David sinned against the whole nation

  289. as he negated his kingly duties

  290. to give in to a moment of lust?

  291. Absolutely.

  292. But in his sorrow,

  293. what David knew was his sin

  294. was against God and God alone.

  295. So we're confessing.

  296. We're taking responsibility for our sin.

  297. We're in sorrow,

  298. so we're grieving over our sin.

  299. And then the third is to turn.

  300. To turn.

  301. Turning from your sin.

  302. Literally, to repent

  303. means to change path,

  304. to change direction,

  305. to change one's mind.

  306. So now I no longer,

  307. in repentance,

  308. choose this sin

  309. that I've pursued

  310. and that I've gone after

  311. and that I've worked for,

  312. but I literally,

  313. within me,

  314. there's a change

  315. and a turn

  316. and a new direction

  317. away from what I long for

  318. and pursuing what God has.

  319. You see, repentance

  320. is more than saying,

  321. my bad.

  322. Repentance

  323. is more than saying,

  324. I'm sorry.

  325. Repentance

  326. is more

  327. than saying,

  328. maybe I'll do better next time.

  329. Repentance

  330. is an open,

  331. honest

  332. response

  333. before God.

  334. Because here's the deal,

  335. I can confess my sin,

  336. I can announce it

  337. to all of you right now,

  338. but not grieve it

  339. and not desire differently.

  340. You see,

  341. I can be sorrowful

  342. for my sin,

  343. but blame others,

  344. carry it with me

  345. and choose to remain

  346. in my own sin.

  347. You see,

  348. I can,

  349. I can in my own power

  350. choose a different path

  351. in life,

  352. but yet never take ownership

  353. of my sin

  354. and never grieve over

  355. my own sinful choices

  356. and behaviors

  357. that I've created

  358. and that exist

  359. in my life.

  360. You see,

  361. repentance is not taking

  362. what is easy

  363. and then I'll do that

  364. and live on this island

  365. of repentance,

  366. but repentance

  367. is embracing all of it.

  368. And John is going out

  369. and saying,

  370. Jesus is coming,

  371. prepare for the king.

  372. Prepare.

  373. Jesus is coming.

  374. You don't know,

  375. you can't wait,

  376. you can't stop it.

  377. Jesus is coming,

  378. so repent,

  379. confess,

  380. grieve,

  381. turn.

  382. Confess,

  383. grieve,

  384. turn.

  385. So today,

  386. not just simply say,

  387. will you repent,

  388. but today,

  389. would you confess?

  390. Today,

  391. would you grieve?

  392. And today,

  393. would you turn?

  394. It's what it looks like

  395. to come to Jesus,

  396. but it's also

  397. what it looks like

  398. to be obedient

  399. to Jesus.

  400. So John's message

  401. is to repent,

  402. but John's method

  403. is baptism.

  404. John's method

  405. is baptism.

  406. Read me verses 7

  407. through verse 12.

  408. but when he saw

  409. many of the Pharisees

  410. and Sadducees

  411. coming to his baptism,

  412. he said to them,

  413. you brood of vipers.

  414. Who warns you

  415. to flee from the wrath

  416. to come?

  417. Bear fruit

  418. in keeping

  419. with repentance

  420. and do not

  421. presume

  422. to say to yourselves,

  423. we have Abraham

  424. as our father.

  425. For I tell you,

  426. God is able

  427. from these stones

  428. to raise up children

  429. for Abraham.

  430. Even now,

  431. the axe is laid

  432. to the root

  433. of the trees.

  434. Every tree,

  435. therefore,

  436. that does not bear

  437. good fruit

  438. is cut down

  439. and thrown

  440. into the fire.

  441. I baptize you

  442. with water

  443. for repentance,

  444. but he who is

  445. coming after me

  446. is mightier than I.

  447. He's talking

  448. about Jesus

  449. whose sandals

  450. I am not worthy

  451. to carry.

  452. He will baptize you

  453. with the Holy Spirit

  454. and fire.

  455. His winnowing fork

  456. is in his hand

  457. and he will clear

  458. his threshing floor

  459. and gather his wheat

  460. into the barn,

  461. but the chaff

  462. he will burn

  463. with unquenchable fire.

  464. John's message

  465. is repent

  466. and John's method

  467. is baptism.

  468. During the days

  469. of the Old Testament

  470. and at this time

  471. as well,

  472. baptism was not

  473. a common practice.

  474. The only people

  475. who were actually

  476. baptized

  477. were Gentiles

  478. who decided

  479. to become followers

  480. of Yahweh.

  481. So when they wanted

  482. to come in

  483. to the Jewish faith

  484. and to be followers

  485. of God,

  486. these Gentiles

  487. would be baptized.

  488. but we see

  489. something different

  490. with John's baptism.

  491. You see,

  492. if you were born

  493. in ethnically Jewish,

  494. then you didn't

  495. have to be baptized.

  496. But look back

  497. at verse 5 and 6.

  498. Then Jerusalem

  499. and all of Judea

  500. and all the region

  501. about the Jordan

  502. were going out

  503. to him

  504. and they were baptized

  505. by him

  506. in the river Jordan

  507. confessing their sins.

  508. these are Jewish people

  509. getting baptized.

  510. And the Pharisees

  511. and the Sadducees,

  512. they don't like it.

  513. Now if you're new

  514. to the Bible,

  515. I want to encourage you

  516. to stay here

  517. with us week in

  518. and week out.

  519. And what you'll find

  520. as we go through

  521. the New Testament,

  522. as we go through Matthew,

  523. that what we'll see

  524. is when God works

  525. and when God moves

  526. and when Jesus

  527. is doing what Jesus does,

  528. the Pharisees

  529. and Sadducees

  530. always have something

  531. to complain about.

  532. And that's what we see

  533. right here.

  534. Jewish people

  535. were coming out

  536. to be baptized

  537. and this enraged

  538. the Pharisees

  539. and the Sadducees

  540. in fits of anger

  541. because they

  542. and their ethnic Jewishness

  543. were like,

  544. we don't have to do this.

  545. We are sons of Abraham.

  546. Why should we have to do

  547. what the Gentiles

  548. have to do?

  549. John says,

  550. bear fruit

  551. in keeping with repentance.

  552. I don't care

  553. that this is

  554. who you belong to

  555. if you're apart

  556. from the work

  557. and the plan

  558. of God.

  559. You see,

  560. the Pharisees

  561. and the Sadducees,

  562. all they thought

  563. they needed

  564. was their ethnic standing

  565. in order to stand

  566. as holy

  567. before God.

  568. In John's hand,

  569. brothers,

  570. you need the king.

  571. You need the king.

  572. You need the king.

  573. And the way

  574. to the king

  575. is found

  576. in repentance.

  577. And when these people

  578. were coming,

  579. they're coming

  580. as a symbol

  581. to show

  582. the change

  583. of what God

  584. has done

  585. and what God

  586. is doing

  587. in their life.

  588. You see,

  589. when we celebrate

  590. baptism,

  591. baptism

  592. is not

  593. you coming

  594. to do an act

  595. to get yourself

  596. saved.

  597. It's not.

  598. And anyone

  599. who preaches

  600. that,

  601. anyone who teaches

  602. that,

  603. preaches a gospel

  604. of works.

  605. Not of the Lord.

  606. But baptism

  607. is both,

  608. I want us to get

  609. this,

  610. baptism is both

  611. a symbol

  612. and a command.

  613. Jesus commands

  614. us to baptize.

  615. We are commanded

  616. to be baptized.

  617. So while it

  618. doesn't save us,

  619. it is an act

  620. of obedience

  621. that God

  622. has called us to.

  623. So I don't want

  624. to lighten

  625. the importance

  626. of it

  627. and just say,

  628. well,

  629. it's just a symbol

  630. because it is a symbol

  631. but it's a symbol

  632. with meaning

  633. and it's a symbol

  634. that we're commanded

  635. to obey

  636. in coming

  637. to God

  638. through faith,

  639. through repentance

  640. to Him.

  641. And this is

  642. what we see.

  643. this is what

  644. we see happening.

  645. As they prepare

  646. the way

  647. for the King,

  648. the message

  649. is repent,

  650. the method

  651. is baptism,

  652. and then what

  653. is happening

  654. is people

  655. are being pointed

  656. out,

  657. oh,

  658. oh,

  659. those are

  660. the disciples

  661. of John.

  662. those are the ones

  663. who are waiting

  664. for the King.

  665. Those are the ones

  666. who are prepared

  667. for His arrival.

  668. They've repented,

  669. they've made

  670. their path

  671. straight.

  672. So He

  673. comes to them.

  674. Baptism

  675. is a symbol

  676. and it's a symbol

  677. that paints

  678. a powerful picture.

  679. For us,

  680. we practice

  681. believer's baptism

  682. when someone

  683. has put their faith,

  684. hope,

  685. and trust

  686. in Jesus Christ

  687. as their Lord

  688. and Savior.

  689. And if you

  690. are here today

  691. and you've put

  692. your faith,

  693. hope,

  694. and trust

  695. as Jesus Christ

  696. as your Lord

  697. and Savior,

  698. whether you did it

  699. in here

  700. during a worship service,

  701. whether you did it

  702. younger when you're

  703. at a VBS

  704. or at a youth camp,

  705. whether you did it

  706. on a job site,

  707. whether you did it

  708. on Bible study,

  709. I don't care

  710. where you did it

  711. when you put,

  712. whether you've done it

  713. through filling out a card,

  714. through saying a prayer,

  715. through having a conversation.

  716. If you put your faith,

  717. hope,

  718. and trust

  719. as Jesus Christ

  720. as your Lord

  721. and Savior,

  722. God has commanded you

  723. to obey Him

  724. in believer's baptism.

  725. And then with that,

  726. what it communicates

  727. and what it speaks to

  728. in your relationship

  729. with Him.

  730. Number one,

  731. it's a picture

  732. of you saying,

  733. I can't save myself

  734. from my sins.

  735. I needed to be saved

  736. and Jesus saved me.

  737. And Jesus saved me.

  738. And He did it

  739. not when I was clean,

  740. not when I was good,

  741. not when I was right,

  742. not when I was made perfect,

  743. but He did it

  744. and that old person

  745. walking into that water,

  746. that person is a symbol

  747. of who they were

  748. before Christ,

  749. covered and filthy

  750. in their trespasses

  751. and sins.

  752. And then they walk

  753. into the water.

  754. And in doing so,

  755. the Bible tells us,

  756. I've been crucified

  757. with Christ.

  758. I've died to myself.

  759. I die to my sins.

  760. And as Christ went

  761. into the tomb,

  762. they go into the water.

  763. And as Christ came

  764. out of the tomb,

  765. we come out of the water,

  766. being washed

  767. and made clean

  768. by the blood of the Lamb.

  769. To not live

  770. and walk

  771. of who we were,

  772. but to be

  773. who He's called us

  774. to be.

  775. That I am now,

  776. the Bible says,

  777. a new creation

  778. in Christ.

  779. The old has gone,

  780. the new has come.

  781. And that's

  782. who we are

  783. in Him.

  784. John looks at

  785. these Pharisees,

  786. he looks at

  787. the Sadducees

  788. who are picking apart

  789. all that's going on,

  790. all that's happening,

  791. and he points

  792. to a different aspect

  793. of Jesus' future ministry.

  794. He says,

  795. not only is the King

  796. coming,

  797. but the King

  798. will also serve

  799. as the righteous judge.

  800. The King

  801. will also

  802. serve

  803. as the righteous

  804. judge.

  805. We're back

  806. at verse 12.

  807. His winnowing fork

  808. is in His hand

  809. and He will clear

  810. His threshing floor

  811. and gather His wheat

  812. into the barn,

  813. but the chaff

  814. He will burn

  815. with unquenchable

  816. fire.

  817. He paints a picture

  818. of what Jesus

  819. will do

  820. in judgment

  821. in the separation

  822. of those

  823. who are part

  824. of the kingdom

  825. and the removal

  826. for those

  827. who are not part

  828. of the kingdom.

  829. You see,

  830. the beauty

  831. of the gospel

  832. is that

  833. the gospel message

  834. says,

  835. for whosoever

  836. will come,

  837. for whosoever

  838. will come.

  839. So I'm going to tell you,

  840. I don't care

  841. how dirty,

  842. how nasty,

  843. how filthy

  844. your past is.

  845. I don't care

  846. how sinful

  847. you were last night,

  848. how sinful

  849. you were this morning.

  850. I don't care

  851. about any awful

  852. evil deed

  853. that you think

  854. that you've done.

  855. The greatest lie

  856. that you could ever

  857. believe is God

  858. could not forgive you.

  859. And Jesus says,

  860. John says,

  861. that He can

  862. and He will

  863. and He loves to

  864. and He delights in it.

  865. So whatever you've done,

  866. whatever you're doing,

  867. the message

  868. is repent.

  869. Repent.

  870. And come to Jesus.

  871. Repent.

  872. And come to Jesus.

  873. Repent.

  874. And come to Jesus.

  875. But the Bible's clear.

  876. That in judgment,

  877. there's going to become

  878. a time.

  879. The image that John gives

  880. is what a farmer would do

  881. after his grain was harvested.

  882. He would go in

  883. and the grain

  884. would be in a pile

  885. and he would take

  886. his winnowing fork

  887. and he would go

  888. into the pile of grain

  889. and he would throw it up

  890. in the air.

  891. And see,

  892. the grain

  893. was heavier

  894. than the chaff.

  895. And so the grain

  896. would fall to the ground

  897. and the chaff

  898. would blow

  899. through the wind

  900. and it would land

  901. on the other side

  902. of the floor.

  903. And he would go through

  904. and he would separate

  905. the good

  906. from that

  907. that would face destruction.

  908. And at the end,

  909. as the grain

  910. was separated

  911. from the chaff,

  912. the kingdom

  913. would be separated

  914. from the others.

  915. and it would be swept up

  916. and it would be tossed

  917. into the fire.

  918. Because you see,

  919. there's a message.

  920. All can come.

  921. All can repent

  922. because there's going

  923. to become

  924. a time.

  925. Here's the question

  926. I have for you this morning.

  927. When that fork

  928. is put in

  929. and that grain

  930. is tossed up

  931. in the air,

  932. where would you fall?

  933. Where would you fall?

  934. John says to the Pharisees

  935. and the Sadducees,

  936. you're going to be

  937. the ones burned up.

  938. You try to stand

  939. in your self-righteousness.

  940. You try to stand

  941. in your heritage.

  942. You try to stand

  943. in your ethnic eliteness

  944. and none of that

  945. is going to find you

  946. acceptable before God.

  947. The only way.

  948. The only way

  949. is Jesus.

  950. So now verse 13.

  951. It says,

  952. when Jesus came

  953. from Galilee

  954. to the Jordan

  955. to John

  956. to be baptized

  957. by him.

  958. Now John

  959. would have prevented

  960. him saying,

  961. I need to be

  962. baptized by you

  963. and do you

  964. come to me?

  965. But Jesus

  966. answered him,

  967. let it be so

  968. now

  969. for thus is fitting

  970. for us to fulfill

  971. all righteousness.

  972. Then he consented.

  973. And when Jesus

  974. was baptized,

  975. immediately

  976. he went up

  977. from the water

  978. and behold,

  979. the heavens

  980. were opened

  981. to him

  982. and he saw

  983. the Spirit

  984. of God

  985. descending like

  986. a dove

  987. and coming

  988. to rest on him.

  989. And behold,

  990. a voice from heaven

  991. said,

  992. this is my

  993. beloved son

  994. with whom

  995. I am

  996. well

  997. pleased.

  998. I want to be honest

  999. with you,

  1000. this is a difficult

  1001. part of the Bible.

  1002. This is a hard

  1003. passage.

  1004. Because what we

  1005. know

  1006. is that

  1007. John's calling

  1008. people to repent

  1009. and then after

  1010. they repent,

  1011. they're baptized.

  1012. well,

  1013. why do they

  1014. need to repent?

  1015. Because they're

  1016. sinners.

  1017. So Jesus

  1018. comes up

  1019. to John

  1020. and says,

  1021. baptize me.

  1022. Now John

  1023. knows.

  1024. John knows.

  1025. John's like,

  1026. Jesus,

  1027. I'm not saying

  1028. you're wrong,

  1029. but

  1030. I don't know,

  1031. man.

  1032. I think

  1033. you should

  1034. baptize me.

  1035. And Jesus

  1036. says,

  1037. no,

  1038. no,

  1039. no.

  1040. This

  1041. is what

  1042. must be

  1043. done

  1044. for it's

  1045. fitting for

  1046. us

  1047. to fulfill

  1048. all

  1049. righteousness.

  1050. So John

  1051. says,

  1052. okay.

  1053. And he

  1054. goes

  1055. and he

  1056. baptizes

  1057. Jesus.

  1058. Why?

  1059. Why?

  1060. I think

  1061. there's

  1062. two,

  1063. all right,

  1064. I've got

  1065. two,

  1066. I've got

  1067. two reasons

  1068. that are

  1069. going to be

  1070. on the

  1071. screen.

  1072. This

  1073. one's

  1074. not

  1075. going to

  1076. be

  1077. on the

  1078. screen.

  1079. It

  1080. should

  1081. have

  1082. been

  1083. on the

  1084. screen.

  1085. I

  1086. apologize.

  1087. Why

  1088. was

  1089. Jesus

  1090. baptized?

  1091. First

  1092. one,

  1093. not

  1094. going

  1095. to

  1096. be

  1097. on

  1098. the

  1099. screen.

  1100. This

  1101. is the

  1102. picture

  1103. of the

  1104. trinity

  1105. that we

  1106. get.

  1107. This

  1108. is the

  1109. picture

  1110. of the

  1111. trinity

  1112. that we

  1113. get.

  1114. And we

  1115. see what

  1116. just

  1117. happened.

  1118. We

  1119. see the

  1120. obedience

  1121. of the

  1122. Son.

  1123. The

  1124. obedience

  1125. of the

  1126. Son.

  1127. The

  1128. obedience

  1129. of Jesus.

  1130. In 30

  1131. years of

  1132. his life,

  1133. sinless.

  1134. And

  1135. he's come

  1136. and he's

  1137. come for

  1138. a purpose.

  1139. Don't

  1140. forget,

  1141. don't forget,

  1142. the

  1143. journey

  1144. to

  1145. his

  1146. kingdom.

  1147. The

  1148. means

  1149. of

  1150. a

  1151. crown

  1152. will

  1153. be

  1154. through

  1155. a

  1156. cross

  1157. and

  1158. a

  1159. crown

  1160. of

  1161. thorns.

  1162. We

  1163. see the

  1164. obedience

  1165. of the

  1166. Son.

  1167. The

  1168. second

  1169. thing that

  1170. we see

  1171. right

  1172. through

  1173. here

  1174. in the

  1175. trinity

  1176. is the

  1177. anointing

  1178. of the

  1179. Holy

  1180. Spirit.

  1181. The

  1182. anointing

  1183. of the

  1184. Holy

  1185. Spirit.

  1186. Now

  1187. this

  1188. does

  1189. not

  1190. mean

  1191. that

  1192. Jesus

  1193. did

  1194. not

  1195. have

  1196. the

  1197. anointing

  1198. of

  1199. the

  1200. Holy

  1201. Spirit

  1202. before.

  1203. But

  1204. what

  1205. this

  1206. is

  1207. is

  1208. this

  1209. is

  1210. a

  1211. marking

  1212. of

  1213. the

  1214. ministry

  1215. of

  1216. Jesus

  1217. of

  1218. what

  1219. will

  1220. happen

  1221. and

  1222. what

  1223. will

  1224. take

  1225. place.

  1226. So

  1227. we

  1228. see

  1229. the

  1230. obedience

  1231. of

  1232. the

  1233. Son.

  1234. We

  1235. see

  1236. the

  1237. anointing

  1238. of

  1239. the

  1240. Holy

  1241. Spirit.

  1242. Oh,

  1243. and then

  1244. we see

  1245. the

  1246. approval

  1247. of

  1248. the

  1249. Father.

  1250. We

  1251. hear

  1252. the

  1253. voice

  1254. of

  1255. the

  1256. Father.

  1257. All

  1258. of

  1259. this

  1260. coming

  1261. together.

  1262. I think

  1263. in the

  1264. baptism

  1265. we

  1266. see

  1267. the

  1268. clearest

  1269. evidence

  1270. of

  1271. the

  1272. Trinity

  1273. in

  1274. Scripture.

  1275. But

  1276. then

  1277. other

  1278. reasons

  1279. and these

  1280. will be

  1281. on

  1282. the

  1283. screen.

  1284. Why

  1285. was

  1286. Jesus

  1287. baptized?

  1288. Jesus

  1289. came as

  1290. an

  1291. example.

  1292. Jesus

  1293. came as

  1294. an

  1295. example.

  1296. When

  1297. we go

  1298. through

  1299. we look

  1300. and we

  1301. see

  1302. Jesus'

  1303. life.

  1304. Jesus

  1305. loves

  1306. man

  1307. he

  1308. loves.

  1309. He

  1310. loves

  1311. some

  1312. difficult

  1313. people.

  1314. He

  1315. serves

  1316. some

  1317. difficult

  1318. people.

  1319. The

  1320. greatest

  1321. traitor

  1322. the world

  1323. has ever

  1324. known,

  1325. Judas,

  1326. is going

  1327. to

  1328. experience

  1329. the

  1330. depth

  1331. of

  1332. relational

  1333. intimacy

  1334. with

  1335. Jesus

  1336. only to

  1337. sell him

  1338. for a few

  1339. pieces of

  1340. silver.

  1341. And

  1342. Jesus

  1343. loves.

  1344. And

  1345. Jesus

  1346. serves.

  1347. And

  1348. Jesus

  1349. speaks

  1350. truth.

  1351. And

  1352. Jesus

  1353. points

  1354. people

  1355. to

  1356. God

  1357. and

  1358. he

  1359. calls

  1360. people

  1361. to

  1362. repent

  1363. and

  1364. Jesus

  1365. loves

  1366. the

  1367. unlovable

  1368. and

  1369. Jesus

  1370. pursues

  1371. all that

  1372. he has

  1373. encountered

  1374. and

  1375. Jesus

  1376. is

  1377. obedient.

  1378. And

  1379. I think

  1380. we can't

  1381. miss

  1382. this.

  1383. That

  1384. Jesus

  1385. comes

  1386. and

  1387. sets

  1388. an

  1389. example

  1390. of

  1391. what

  1392. we are

  1393. to not

  1394. just

  1395. do

  1396. but

  1397. what

  1398. we are

  1399. to be

  1400. in

  1401. what

  1402. it

  1403. means

  1404. to

  1405. be

  1406. obedient

  1407. to

  1408. God.

  1409. But

  1410. then

  1411. lastly

  1412. and I

  1413. think

  1414. there's

  1415. probably

  1416. the

  1417. strongest

  1418. evidence

  1419. from

  1420. this

  1421. is

  1422. Jesus

  1423. came

  1424. as a

  1425. substitute.

  1426. Jesus

  1427. came

  1428. as a

  1429. substitute.

  1430. I

  1431. believe

  1432. that

  1433. there was

  1434. never a

  1435. point of

  1436. time

  1437. where the

  1438. cross was

  1439. not on the

  1440. mind of

  1441. Christ.

  1442. and

  1443. that

  1444. what

  1445. Jesus

  1446. is

  1447. going

  1448. to

  1449. do

  1450. is

  1451. being

  1452. free

  1453. from

  1454. sin

  1455. identify

  1456. with

  1457. us

  1458. as

  1459. sinners

  1460. and

  1461. become

  1462. the

  1463. substitute

  1464. atonement

  1465. the

  1466. substitute

  1467. recipient

  1468. of the

  1469. penalty

  1470. that we

  1471. deserve.

  1472. The

  1473. Apostle

  1474. Paul

  1475. writes

  1476. in 2

  1477. Corinthians

  1478. 5

  1479. 21

  1480. for our

  1481. sake

  1482. for our

  1483. sake

  1484. he

  1485. made

  1486. him

  1487. to be

  1488. sin

  1489. who

  1490. knew

  1491. no

  1492. sin

  1493. so

  1494. that

  1495. in

  1496. him

  1497. we

  1498. might

  1499. become

  1500. the

  1501. righteousness

  1502. of

  1503. God

  1504. that

  1505. he

  1506. free

  1507. free

  1508. from

  1509. sin

  1510. lived

  1511. a

  1512. sinless

  1513. life

  1514. came

  1515. to

  1516. substitute

  1517. himself

  1518. to

  1519. take

  1520. on

  1521. our

  1522. punishment

  1523. and to

  1524. give

  1525. us

  1526. his

  1527. perfection

  1528. and so

  1529. now

  1530. that I'm

  1531. in

  1532. Christ

  1533. now

  1534. that I'm

  1535. the new

  1536. creation

  1537. now

  1538. that I'm

  1539. the new

  1540. man

  1541. and who

  1542. God

  1543. has now

  1544. created

  1545. me

  1546. to be

  1547. covered

  1548. by the

  1549. blood

  1550. of the

  1551. lamb

  1552. that

  1553. while

  1554. I'm

  1555. still

  1556. flawed

  1557. I

  1558. still

  1559. got my

  1560. issues

  1561. and

  1562. repentance

  1563. needs to

  1564. consistently

  1565. be

  1566. a part

  1567. of my

  1568. daily

  1569. moment

  1570. by moment

  1571. life

  1572. because

  1573. of

  1574. Jesus

  1575. when

  1576. God

  1577. looks at

  1578. me

  1579. he

  1580. sees

  1581. the

  1582. perfection

  1583. of

  1584. Christ

  1585. so

  1586. that

  1587. on

  1588. that

  1589. day

  1590. when

  1591. it's

  1592. tossed

  1593. from

  1594. the

  1595. floor

  1596. not

  1597. through

  1598. my

  1599. own

  1600. works

  1601. but

  1602. through

  1603. the

  1604. works

  1605. of

  1606. Christ

  1607. I'll

  1608. be

  1609. found

  1610. holy

  1611. will

  1612. you

  1613. will

  1614. you

  1615. I'm

  1616. going to

  1617. ask the

  1618. band

  1619. if they'll

  1620. come back

  1621. to the

  1622. stage

  1623. as we

  1624. prepare

  1625. for our

  1626. time

  1627. of

  1628. response

  1629. number

  1630. one

  1631. for

  1632. you

  1633. today

  1634. have

  1635. you

  1636. repented

  1637. have

  1638. you

  1639. repented

  1640. whether

  1641. it's

  1642. the

  1643. first

  1644. time

  1645. or

  1646. many

  1647. times

  1648. have

  1649. you

  1650. repented

  1651. have

  1652. you

  1653. confessed

  1654. your

  1655. sin

  1656. and

  1657. owned

  1658. your

  1659. sin

  1660. and

  1661. your

  1662. responsibility

  1663. have

  1664. you

  1665. been

  1666. sorrowful

  1667. and

  1668. grieved

  1669. over

  1670. your

  1671. sin

  1672. before

  1673. God

  1674. and

  1675. God

  1676. alone

  1677. and

  1678. turned

  1679. to a

  1680. different

  1681. way

  1682. Jesus

  1683. way

  1684. have

  1685. you

  1686. been

  1687. obedient

  1688. in

  1689. baptism

  1690. publicly

  1691. telling

  1692. the

  1693. world

  1694. your

  1695. public

  1696. profession

  1697. of

  1698. faith

  1699. that

  1700. Jesus

  1701. is

  1702. the

  1703. way

  1704. and

  1705. Jesus

  1706. has

  1707. become

  1708. your

  1709. way

  1710. but

  1711. you

  1712. seek

  1713. to

  1714. follow

  1715. him

  1716. your

  1717. substitute

  1718. and

  1719. if

  1720. so

  1721. if

  1722. so

  1723. during

  1724. this

  1725. time

  1726. of

  1727. worship

  1728. will

  1729. you

  1730. prepare

  1731. to

  1732. take

  1733. the

  1734. Lord's

  1735. supper

  1736. with

  1737. me

  1738. as

  1739. we

  1740. will

  1741. look

  1742. at

  1743. the

  1744. bread

  1745. representing

  1746. the

  1747. body

  1748. of

  1749. Christ

  1750. that

  1751. was

  1752. punished

  1753. and

  1754. paid

  1755. for

  1756. the

  1757. price

  1758. of

  1759. your

  1760. sin

  1761. and

  1762. mind

  1763. and

  1764. to

  1765. take

  1766. of

  1767. the

  1768. cup

  1769. the

  1770. new

  1771. covenant

  1772. and the

  1773. representative

  1774. of the

  1775. blood

  1776. that

  1777. washes

  1778. us

  1779. and

  1780. makes

  1781. us

  1782. clean

  1783. makes

  1784. us

  1785. new

  1786. God

  1787. we

  1788. come

  1789. to

  1790. you

  1791. today

  1792. in

  1793. response

  1794. to

  1795. your

  1796. word

  1797. or

  1798. if

  1799. there's

  1800. anyone

  1801. here

  1802. who

  1803. does

  1804. not

  1805. know

  1806. Christ

  1807. as

  1808. their

  1809. Lord

  1810. and

  1811. Savior

  1812. God

  1813. I

  1814. pray

  1815. that

  1816. today

  1817. through

  1818. the

  1819. leading

  1820. of

  1821. your

  1822. Holy

  1823. Spirit

  1824. Lord

  1825. they

  1826. would

  1827. know

  1828. that

  1829. there's

  1830. no

  1831. religious

  1832. act

  1833. that

  1834. can

  1835. save

  1836. them

  1837. there's

  1838. no

  1839. self

  1840. righteous

  1841. work

  1842. that

  1843. can

  1844. perfect

  1845. them

  1846. it's

  1847. simply

  1848. to come

  1849. to

  1850. Jesus

  1851. through

  1852. faith

  1853. and

  1854. repentance

  1855. and

  1856. God

  1857. if

  1858. there's

  1859. anyone

  1860. here

  1861. Lord

  1862. as

  1863. we

  1864. as

  1865. followers

  1866. of

  1867. Jesus

  1868. prepare

  1869. to

  1870. take

  1871. the

  1872. Lord's

  1873. Supper

  1874. before

  1875. we sing

  1876. a note

  1877. of a

  1878. song

  1879. before

  1880. we

  1881. participate

  1882. in

  1883. the

  1884. taking

  1885. together

  1886. Lord

  1887. may we

  1888. first

  1889. come

  1890. to

  1891. you

  1892. in a

  1893. heart

  1894. of

  1895. brokenness

  1896. in the

  1897. heart

  1898. of

  1899. repentance

  1900. God

  1901. we

  1902. confess

  1903. our

  1904. sins

  1905. to

  1906. you

  1907. sins

  1908. Lord

  1909. to

  1910. numerous
